Is Sam Raimi Going to Direct the POLTERGEIST Remake?

$

0

Earlier this year we learned that Sam Raimi was in talks to direct the Poltergeist remake that has been in development for quite a long time. The news came from MGM CEO Roger Birnbaum, but at the time nothing was set in stone and it was far from a done deal.

The news of Raimi directing the movie is back in the news. In a recent article at THR screenwriter David Lindsay-Abaire, who has been working on the script for the film, mentioned to them that Raimi was attached to direct it,

His next project is equally unconventional: He’s penning the script for a remake of Poltergeist, to be directed by Sam Raimi, who he reveals was originally supposed to direct the big-screen adaptation of his Pulitzer Prize-winning play Rabbit Hole before a scheduling conflict got in the way. (John Cameron Mitchell wound up getting the job.)

The author of the THR piece didn't seem to make a big deal about it in the piece so he took to twitter to clarify what he wrote saying,

Lindsay-Abaire told me that Raimi was directing it. I had never heard of the possibility before that.

Well, there was a possibility earlier this year when the director was in talks to direct it. There was no mention of the director still being in talks, it was just a flat out statement saying that Raimi is going to direct it. If this is true it could be amazing! I'm a huge fan of Raimi's horror films, and if anyone is going to remake Poltergeist right, it would be Raimi. The original film is simply terrifying, it's one of my favorite horror movies of all time, and it would be fun to see Raimi's take on it. Hopefully we get some solid confirmation of this news soon.

What do you think about the possibility of Raimi directing Poltergiest

Here's the Synopsis:

Presented by Quentin Tarantino, the action-adventure is inspired by kung-fu classics as interpreted by his longtime collaborators RZA and Eli Roth. Making his debut as a big-screen director and leading man, RZA-alongside a stellar international cast led by Russell Croweand Lucy Liu-tells the epic story of warriors, assassins and a lone outsider hero in nineteenth-century China who must unite to destroy the clan traitor who would destroy them all.

Since his arrival in China's Jungle Village, the town's blacksmith (RZA) has been forced by radical tribal factions to create elaborate tools of destruction. When the clans' brewing war boils over, the stranger channels an ancient energy to transform himself into a human weapon. As he fights alongside iconic heroes and against soulless villains, one man must harness this power to become savior of his adopted people.

Universal Developing a Spy Thriller Called THE RIGHT HAND

$

Universal Pictures is set to develop a big screen adaptation of the spy thriller novel The Right Hand with producer Scott Stuber. The book was written by Derek Haas, and he will adapt it into a screenplay with his screenwriting partner Michael Brandt. They've worked together on a couple of other films in the past such as Wanted and 3:10 To Yuma.

The story focuses on a character named Austin Clay, "a spy whose work is so covert that the government won’t even admit he exists. And yet he executes necessary missions. Here, he is sent to track down a missing American operative, who was captured in the Russian countryside. This leads Clay into a conspiracy that involves a mole that has penetrated the top levels of U.S. government."

Sounds like it could be a solid film project. Haas had this to say about it in a statement,

I’m thrilled The Right Hand is in the hands of Scott Stuber and Universal, with whom Michael and I have had incredible movie experiences. We love that after readers get a chance to discover this spy thriller in November, we’ll get to bring it to the screen ourselves.

Here's a more detailed description of the story from the book, and below that you will find a trailer. Check it out and let us know what one of your favorite spy thiller movies is!

Meet Austin Clay, the CIA's best-kept secret.

There has always been a need in the spy game for operations outside the realm of legality-covert missions so black no one in the American government, and almost no one in intelligence itself, is aware of their existence. The left hand can't know what the right hand is doing.

Austin Clay is that right hand, executing missions that would be disavowed by his own government were he ever to be compromised. His team consists of only his trusted handler and himself. His missions are among the most important and dangerous in U.S. history.

Clay is sent to track down a missing American operative, a man who was captured outside of Moscow, in the Russian countryside. Soon he discovers the missing officer is only the beginning of the mission, and finds himself protecting a desperate woman who believes a mole has penetrated the top levels of the U.S. government, throwing the international balance of power into jeopardy.

With blistering pace, international intrigue, and a high-stakes plot that spans continents, THE RIGHT HAND introduces a new hero, from the novelist whose work the New York Times Book Review has proclaimed "devastatingly cool."

Universal's SCARFACE Remake Gets New Writer

$

I was totally unaware that Universal is planning another remake of their classic gangster flick Scarface, but apparently things are moving forward on it. Deadline reports the studio has hired Paul Attanasio to rewrite the screenplay originally drafted by Training Day writer David Ayer.

Attanasio's writing resume is filled with highs (Donnie Brasco, Disclosure) and lows (The Sum of All Fears, Sphere), so it's not obvious to us whether he's the right guy to tackle this remake. We'll reserve judgment until a trailer comes out, but that'll be a while since there isn't even a director attached yet.

The original Scarface was directed by Howard Hawks back in the 1930s and was considered untouchable until Brian De Palma came along and remade it with Al Pacino in the lead role in 1982. This may be heresy to a lot of people, but I find the Pacino version almost unwatchable and insanely overrated, so I'm actually looking forward to a new take on the story of an outsider who infiltrates the drug scene and becomes a mastermind. Though I must say, I don't know if anyone can make a more compelling modern version of this story than what Vince Gilligan has done with Breaking Bad.

What do you think about a Scarface remake? Are you on board?

GHOSTBUSTERS 3 to Start Shooting Next Summer?!

$

We've been following Ghostbusters 3's long hard road to the big screen for several years now. I wasn't even sure if the movie would ever happen, but according to a report from Deadline the movie will start shooting next summer with director Ivan Reitman at the helm! Unsurprisingly, Bill Murray will not be a part of it.

The reports says that Reitman "is expected to finally get the long-gestating Ghostbusters reboot in front of the cameras next summer for Sony Pictures (sans Bill Murray)."

So it seems like this is actually going to happen! I'm just sad that Murray won't be back to reprise his iconic role of Peter Venkman. That is one of my favorite characters in movie history. Dan Aykroyd has confirmed reports that the plot of the film will revolve around a new generation of Ghostbusters and gave a little insight into his and Harold Ramis' characters.

My character, Ray, is now blind in one eye and can't drive the cadillac. He's got a bad knee and can't carry the packs... Egon is too large to get into the harness. We need young blood and that's the promise. We're gonna hand it to a new generation.

Screenwriter Etan Cohen (Tropic Thunder, Men in Black 3) was recently hired to rewrite the script, which was originally drafted by Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg.

I want to be excited about this franchise making a comeback, but it's hard to envision a great Ghostbusters movie without Murray. Are you excited to hear that the movie is moving forward?!

New Trailer for Guillermo del Toro's Terrifying Horror Film MAMA

Universal has released a second great trailer for the Guillermo del Toro-produced, Andres Muschietti-directed ghost thriller Mama. The new trailer features some awesomely terrifying new footage and is targeted to the Latino market, as it includes Spanish titles. This looks like such a great horror movie, and I can't wait to see it!

The movie is based on Muschietti’s 2008 Spanish-language short film, and it stars Jessica Chastain, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Megan Charpentier and Isabelle Nellsse. It's set to be released on January 18th, 2013. Have you ever come across any kids that just creeped you out?

Here's the Synopsis:

A supernatural thriller that tells the haunting tale of two little girls who disappeared into the woods the day that their mother was murdered. When they are rescued years later and begin a new life, they find that someone or something still wants to come tuck them in at night.

The day their father killed their mother, sisters Victoria and Lilly vanished near their suburban neighborhood. For five long years, their Uncle Lucas and his girlfriend, Annabel, have been madly searching for them. But when, incredibly, the kids are found alive in a decrepit cabin, the couple wonders if the girls are the only guests they have welcomed into their home.

As Annabel tries to introduce the children to a normal life, she grows convinced of an evil presence in their house. Are the sisters experiencing traumatic stress, or is a ghost coming to visit them? How did the broken girls survive those years all by themselves? As she answers these disturbing questions, the new mother will find that the whispers she hears at bedtime are coming from the lips of a deadly presence.

Los Angeles, Check Out Q&A w/ Director William Lustig Tonight at LACMA

For those living in Los Angeles, here's a cool pre-Halloween treat for you. Tonight at LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art), the fine folks of Film Independent are putting on a double feature of director William Lustig's 80s classics Maniac Cop and Vigilante. The best part? Lustig will be there for a Q&A in between, and tickets are just $10.

Maniac Cop is getting the remake treatment with Nicolas Winding Refn soon, so this is a cool chance to see the original movie before all of the buzz starts building for the new version. Plus, a young Bruce Campbell has a role as a cop who is framed for the crimes of a madman who wanders the streets of New York killing people, and he must clear his name and bring the killer to justice before it's too late. Vigilante  is a sort of Death Wish-type revenge film starring Jackie Brown star Robert Forster, and Lustig's Q&A will take place in between the two films. Check out Film Independent's website for all the details on tonight's event.

So if you don't already have plans tonight and you're in the L.A. area, check this out. The Q&A's almost never disappoint, and if nothing else it'll be an opportunity to get primed for the rest of October as we head toward Halloween.

The TWILIGHT Franchise Isn't Going Away

$

I'm sorry to tell you that the Twilight franchise will not end with Breaking Dawn Part 2. The franchise is going to get a freakin' reboot! As of right now there are no concrete details but according to MovieholeLionsgate-Summit is currently looking at rebooting the franchise as a "TV show or film spin-off, merely set in the same world as the one in the movies but not featuring the main trio.” The Wolf Pack is also apparently "one area of interest" that the studio is considering.

This news really isn't that surprising, I think most of us knew this was going to happen, but hoped that it wouldn't. This is one of the studio's biggest money makers, so of course they are going to soak it for all that it's worth. It will be interesting to see how long they will actually be able to drag it out for.

This franchise really annoys the hell out of me, and I know most of you don't really care for it either. The good thing is we don't have to watch it if we don't want to, unless our wives or girlfriends force us to go with a loaded gun pointed at our heads. Good times.

STAR WARS Fan Art - War is Coming

Check out this way cool piece of Star Wars fan art created by DeviantArtist gustavoahlen. It's called War is Coming, and I love the epic scope of it. Here's a note from the artist,

This is a design that I have done as a gift to all Star Wars fans.

Firstly I worked in the procedural terrain trying to get a good erosion in the rocks and after this I have created a list of personal materials to test what was the best way to do it. Clone troopers as the well-known spaceship called "Destroyer star" were made on 3Ds Max 2013 and I then added these objects on Vue.

How awesome would it be to see something like this in real life?

As we patiently wait for the first trailer for Iron Man 3 here's the first official plot synopsis for the movie from Stitch Kingdom. The Weinstein Company has released five great new character posters for Quentin Tarantino's badass looking western, Django Unchained, featuring Christoph Waltz as the German bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz, Leonardo DiCaprio as Calvin Candie, Jamie Foxx and Django, Kerry Washington as Broomhilda von Shaft and Samuel L. Jackson as Stephen.

The movie hits theaters on December 25th, and I can't wait to see it! Do you think the movie will live up to your expectations?

Here's the synopsis:

Set in the South two years before the Civil War, "Django Unchained" stars Academy Award®-winner Jamie Foxx as Django, a slave whose brutal history with his former owners lands him face-to-face with German-born bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz (Academy Award®-winner Christoph Waltz). Schultz is on the trail of the murderous Brittle brothers, and only Django can lead him to his bounty. The unorthodox Schultz acquires Django with a promise to free him upon the capture of the Brittles – dead or alive.

Success leads Schultz to free Django, though the two men choose not to go their separate ways. Instead, Schultz seeks out the South’s most wanted criminals with Django by his side. Honing vital hunting skills, Django remains focused on one goal: finding and rescuing Broomhilda (Kerry Washington), the wife he lost to the slave trade long ago.

Django and Schultz’s search ultimately leads them to Calvin Candie (Academy Award®-nominee Leonardo DiCaprio), the proprietor of “Candyland,” an infamous plantation where slaves are groomed by trainer Ace Woody to battle each other for sport. Exploring the compound under false pretenses, Django and Schultz arouse the suspicion of Stephen (Academy Award®-nominee Samuel L. Jackson), Candie's trusted house slave. Their moves are marked, and a treacherous organization closes in on them. If Django and Schultz are to escape with Broomhilda, they must choose between independence and solidarity, between sacrifice and survival...

ALEX CROSS Sequel DOUBLE CROSS Being Planned

Tyler Perry and Matthew Fox's new action thriller Alex Cross doesn't come out until Friday, but production company QED is already planning to make a sequel based on the James Patterson novel Double Cross. This is the 13th book in the Alex Cross series and here's a description of the story:

Just when Alex Cross's life is calming down, he is drawn back into the game to confront a criminal mastermind like no other. The elaborate murders that have stunned Washington, DC, are the wildest that Alex Cross and his new girlfriend, Detective Brianna Stone, have ever seen. This maniac adores an audience, and stages his killings as spectacles in public settings. Alex is pursuing a genius of terror who has the whole city on edge as it waits for his next move. And the killer loves the attention, no doubt–he even sets up his own Web site and live video feed to trumpet his madness.

Perry will reprise his role as the famous Washington DC crimefighter/psychologist. I have yet to see the film, but I'm more excited about seeing Fox as the villain. From the trailers I've seen of the movie, it's hard for me to see Perry in a role like this, it just doesn't seem to fit him.

Are you looking forward to seeing Alex Cross? Do you think Perry fits the role? And are you excited to hear we are going to see a sequel?

JUSTICE LEAGUE to be Released in 2015

Warner Bros. is looking to release their long awaited Justice League movie during the summer of 2015. The studio just won a big legal battle over the rights for Superman, and now that it's basically over they are looking to start shooting it next year! All they need now is a director and cast to bring it to life. The screenplay was written by Will Beall, and there are no details on the story, but it will bring Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman and The Flash together on the big screen for the first time.

According to LA Times, "Had Warner lost its case against the heirs of Superman co-creator Joe Shuster, it would not have been able to make Justice League or any other movies, television shows or comics featuring key elements of the Man of Steel's mythos after 2013 unless it reached a new agreement with the estates of Shuster and co-creator Jerry Siegel."

Hopefully the studio is able to land a great director and solid cast for the project. The most recent rumor suggests that they want Armie Hammer to take on the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman, but as of right now nothing is set in stone. I imagine we'll start seeing a lot of news coming from the Warner Bros. studio lot now that they are moving full steam ahead on the superhero film project.

I'm excited about this movie, and I truly hope that the WB can pull it off. What are your thoughts on WB's Justice League?

The art above was created by Bob Strang.
