First Photo of Neil Patrick Harris as Count Olaf in LEMONY SNICKET Series

Netflix is currently in production on their new series adaption of Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. The show stars Neil Patrick Harris in the role of Count Olaf, and today you get your first look at him in character. As you will see in the image below, he looks virtually unrecognizable.

The first episode is being directed by Barry Sonnenfeld (Men in Black), and the series stars Malina Weissman and Louis Hynes as Violet and Klaus, respectively. It also stars Patrick Warburton in the role of Lemony Snicket, the narrator of the eight-episode adaptation.

A Series of Unfortunate Events recounts the tale of the orphaned children Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire at the hands of the villainous Count Olaf, as they face trials and tribulations, misfortunes, and an evil uncle in search of their fortune, all in their quest to uncover the secret of their parents’ death. The books have sold more than 65 million copies and have been translated into 43 languages. The epic series will be executive produced by Barry Sonnenfeld, who will also direct a number of episodes, and Daniel Handler, legal, literary and social representative for Lemony Snicket. [Handler is actually the writer of the successful book series. — Ed.]

What do you think of Harris’ Count Olaf look in the series? It’s just a set photo, but it will be fun to see what he looks like when he’s in full costume.

Marvel Issues Statement on DOCTOR STRANGE and The Ancient One Casting Controversy

When Tilda Swinton was cast as The Ancient One in Marvel’s Doctor Strange, I thought it was a really cool, unique, and bold decision. I loved what I saw of the character in the trailer for the film, but of course, some people were upset by the whitewashing.

If you are familiar with the comic books then you know Marvel has been notorious for mixing things up, which has been great and keeps fans on their toes. In case you’re wondering why Marvel decided to cast a white woman as the character, they have released an official statement, which was posted by Mashable. Marvel explains:

“Marvel has a very strong record of diversity in its casting of films and regularly departs from stereotypes and source material to bring its MCU to life. The Ancient One is a title that is not exclusively held by any one character, but rather a moniker passed down through time, and in this particular film the embodiment is Celtic. We are very proud to have the enormously talented Tilda Swinton portray this unique and complex character alongside our richly diverse cast.”

The Ancient One is a title that doesn’t belong to one particular person, but an honor passed amongst many? That sounds like a solid explanation to me, and I love the fact that they went with a Celtic take on the character. Why the hell not?!

Some of the issues sparked from recent comments made by screenwriter C. Robert Cargill when he said:

"[The Ancient One] originates from Tibet, so if you acknowledge that Tibet is a place and that he’s Tibetan, you risk alienating one billion people who think that that’s bullsh*t and risk the Chinese government going, ‘Hey, you know one of the biggest film-watching countries in the world? We’re not going to show your movie because you decided to get political.
"If we decide to go the other way and cater to China in particular — if you think it's a good idea to cast a Chinese actress as a Tibetan character, you are out of your damn fool mind and have no idea what the f*ck you're talking about."

Everyone seems to have their own opinion on the matter, but Marvel's explanation of it being a creative choice is just something I figured was the case from the very beginning. What are your thoughts on Marvel’s statement?

Robert Downey Jr. Stops by Children’s Hospital Before CIVIL WAR Premiere

It’s always awesome to see A-list stars go out of their way to bring some joy and happiness into people's lives. Although I support Team Cap, I’ve gotta give Team Iron Man props because Robert Downey Jr. visited a children’s hospital before the premiere of Captain America: Civil War. A collection of photos of the actor’s visit were posted on Twitter by the Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity in London.

While there he met with several kids including 7-year-old Ethan Miller from Southend, Essex, “who suffers from the rare blood disease ITP as well as type 1 diabetes. Miller was dressed in costume as his favorite Avenger, Iron Man, as he posed for pictures with Downey alongside his parents, Kristie and Lee.”

These kinds of selfless acts bring joy and happiness into people's lives. Downey Jr. has proven once again that he is a stand-up individual with a heart of gold.

"Staying together is more important than how we stay together."

Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War is sneaking up on us pretty quick, and I can’t wait for all of you to get to see it! This movie is absolutely incredible and in my opinion, the best Marvel film that has been made so far. I know Marvel fans are going to love it.

To tide us over while you wait a little longer, here’s four more TV spots that offer us some additional new footage involving Spider-Man, Ant-Man, Black Panther and more. The spots also come with  quotes from film critics who back up my claim that this movie is spectacular. Captain America: Civil War will arrive in theaters on May 6th, 2016. I also included a couple new posters.

Trailer for Oliver Stone's Political Thriller SNOWDEN with Joseph Gordon-Levitt

"There's something going inside the government that's really wrong, and I can't ignore it…"

I've always been fascinated by Oliver Stone's films. Films such as Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July, Wall Street, and JFK are some of his best and most intriguing work. The filmmaker has most recently developed a "politically-charged, pulse-pounding thriller" called Snowden.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Edward Snowden in the film about the incredible untold true story of "the polarizing figure who exposed shocking illegal surveillance activities by the NSA and became one of the most wanted men in the world. He is considered a hero by some, and a traitor by others. No matter which you believe, the epic story of why he did it, who he left behind, and how he pulled it off."

We have the first trailer for the film for you to watch today, and it looks like a great and compelling movie. The voice that Gordon-Levitt uses for his character in the film is a bit jarring at first, but it starts to sink in and work as you keep watching.

The movie also stars Shailene Woodley as Snowden's girlfriend Lindsay, Nicolas Cage, and Zachary Quinto. Snowden will be released in theaters on September 16th, 2016.

Cosplayer Michael Wilson aka Knightmage has created the best and only Afro Samurai cosplay that you will ever need to see. What this guy has come up with is complete perfection and awesomely badass. He's brought this animated character to life in a way that I've never seen before. I especially love the hair and the headband which is made to look like the wind is constantly blowing around him. The photos you see here were taken by by Gwendolyn Graham and Black Apple Studios. Enjoy!

Richard E. Grant Will Play a Villainous Mad Scientist in WOLVERINE 3

Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart will be joined by British actor Richard E. Grant (Jekyll & Hyde) in director James Mangold's Wolverine 3. The news comes from THR who reports that Grant will play a villainous mad scientist type character. There's no information on the character other than that. The cast of the film will also be joined by Boyd Holbrook, who is set to play Jackman’s nemesis. He's an original character described as a "relentless, calculating and intense head of security for a global enterprise."

The official plot details are being kept under wraps, but the movie is confirmed to take place in the future. That news leads many fans to believe that the rumors that the story will at least be inspired by the Old Man Logan comic story arc are true. That story takes place in a dystopian future where villains have taken over society, Mysterio messes with Wolverine, and he ends up killing the X-Men. He then goes into hiding for years only to later be forced out of hiding to help an old friend and his family.

Wolverine 3 will be released in theaters on March 23rd, 2017.

Stan Lee's Chakra The Invincible Getting Live Action Bollywood Film

0
0

It may not be relevant to us here in the states, but this is a pretty big deal. i09 reports that Stan Lee's superhero Chakra The Invincible, an India-based superhero, will be getting his own Bollywood live action film!

Chakra The Invincible is a kid (or man depending on comic/movie) who uses a techno suit to access all his chakras, giving him superpowers. He first made his debut in a 2013 Cartoon Network India movie.

Man, that is some rough animation compared to our standards. Lee, of course, is excited about the project. All I want to know is whether or not he will be making an appearance in the film! I would love to see him in a choreographed dance scene!

Honestly, I want to see more foreign superhero films...can we make that happen?!

A Look At TRANSFORMERS 4 and Its Terrible Product Placement

0

Product placement has become a necessity of blockbusters but they can be done right. If you're looking for an example of how to do it wrong, look at Transformers: Age of Extinction and Man of Steel. They're in your face, obvious, and oddly out of place with the plot. Smokydogy didn't do a video about Man of Steel, but I'll never let that ridiculous IHOP scene go...EVEN IF THEIR PANCAKES ARE DELICIOUS!

Take a look at some of Transformers 4's worst (and that's saying something) moments below.

WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER: TEN YEARS LATER Coming to Netflix

0

Netflix's Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp is the best prequel I've ever seen, enriching and recontextualizing the original movie while also being a laugh-out-loud comedy all on its own. So I'm pretty damn excited about the news that Netflix is going back to camp with creators Michael Showalter and David Wain yet again for a new batch of episodes entitled Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later.

THR reports that the eight episode season will premiere sometime in 2017, with Showalter and Wain writing and Wain set to direct. No word yet on whether the original cast will return, but considering they all found time in their busy schedules for First Day of Camp, it seems promising that they'll be back once again. (If you aren't aware, the original movie featured appearances by a bunch of then-up-and-coming actors who have since become big stars, including Bradley Cooper, Amy Poehler, Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks, and more, and they all reprised their roles in the prequel series.)

First Day of Camp left a little tease about the fate of Chris Pine's character, so hopefully that will be tied up in the new Ten Years Later series. I'm super stoked about this, but what do you all think? I'm going to be listening to Jefferson Starship's "Jane" all day to celebrate this news.

Kylo Ren Redubbed For Some Hilarious STAR WARS Outtakes

Circulating the web today is a humorous redub of Kylo Ren using actual footage from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. I won't say it's outright the funniest thing I've seen, but it has quite a few humorous moments! Overall a solid effort by Auralnauts. I especially appreciated the Game of Thrones reference.

Check Out The First Photo From Ridley Scott's ALIEN: COVENANT

As I'm sure you know, yesterday was Alien Day (4/26, like planet LV-426), and last night, 20th Century Fox released the first image from Ridley Scott's Prometheus sequel/Alien prequel Alien: Covenant. The movie reportedly takes place ten years after the events of Prometheus, and you can read the official synopsis below:

Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world -- whose sole inhabitant is the "synthetic" David (Michael Fassbender), survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.

The patch obviously belongs to one of the Covenant's crew members, and you can see that the infamous Weyland-Yutani Corporation continues to be involved in the mythology of this universe. Scott has teased some pretty big things for this movie, including that it will include every version of xenomorph and that it will have a pretty hard R ratingMichael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Demian Bichir, Jussie Smollett, and Danny McBride star, and Alien: Covenant is slated to hit theaters on August 4, 2017.

THE DUEL Trailer: Woody Harrelson and Liam Hemsworth Battle It Out in The Old West

0
0

It was less than a week ago that I was writing about how the western genre seems to be experiencing a bit of a resurgence, and now that trend continues as another western film heads our way. Entertainment Weekly has the first trailer and poster for The Duel, which sees Hunger Games stars Liam Hemsworth and Woody Harrelson go from allies to enemies.

THE DUEL stars Liam Hemsworth as a Texas Ranger who investigates a series of murders in a small town led by a charismatic preacher played by Woody Harrelson. However, the routine undercover investigation soon turns personal for the ranger who must solve the case before he loses everything to the mysterious town.

The film hails from Triple 9 writer Matt Cook and director Kieran Darcy-Smith, who's part of the Blue Tongue Films collective along with Joel Edgerton, Nash Edgerton, Spencer Susser (Hesher), David Michod (Animal Kingdom), Mirrah Foulkes, and Luke Doolan. Darcy-Smith previously directed the 2012 movie Wish You Were Here.

There appears to be some supernatural elements at play with Harrelson's character's control over the ranger's wife, so that might make this a little different than your standard western. The way the trailer reveals that Harrelson is the man who killed Hemsworth's father fell flat for me, so we'll have to see if it all works in context when The Duel hits theaters and On Demand platforms on June 24th.

Growing Up Geek: My Second Short Film — TOP SECRET JET

0
0

This is the latest in a series of articles about my experience growing up as a geek, working as an actor at a young age, and developing interests that would eventually drive me to start GeekTyrant. For all of the entries in the Growing Up Geek series so far, click here.

My last Growing Up Geek article focused on my dad buying a video camera and me starting to experiment with it and shoot my own short films. This next series of Growing Up Geek posts will revolve around my adventures in filmmaking and learning how to make films guerrilla-style.

After having completed our first short film (a horror movie about a killer crocodile mauling a little boy to death), we decided that our follow-up film would be an action spy thriller.

I had the in-camera editing thing down pretty well, now it was just a matter of taking things to a whole new level of awesomeness. The next film we made was called Top Secret Jet and we set out to make a thrilling, balls-to-the-wall action movie with all kinds of over the top ridiculous action and violence.

Being thirteen years old with no budget and working with my younger brothers, we were forced to get creative with what we had. We obviously didn't reach the level of Michael Bay action, but in our own minds as little kids, when we watched the completed film, that's exactly what we thought we accomplished.

Top Secret Jet was our masterpiece, and to this day it's one of our favorite things that we've done. It was just so fun to make and the end result is ridiculous bliss.

The story follows a villainous contractor who is hired to steal a top secret jet from the United States Government. But a hard-ass cowboy hired to protect it stands in his way, and the two characters end up in an insane fight that rivals that of what we saw in Batman v Superman

Like I said, we had to get creative to bring this story to life. For example, I wanted to throw one of the characters off a balcony, so we built a dummy that fell apart mid-fall. I also wanted to break one of the characters' legs, so we stuffed some pants and put a long stick in the leg so that when the leg was pulled back the stick would break and make a gruesome snapping sound. There were a few other things we did that I'm sure you'll catch while watching it.

Ok, that's enough set up. Sit back, relax, and enjoy Top Secret Jet, the second film that I made with my brothers. Just a reminder: we were kids when we made this!

Paramount Being Sued For Not Enough Product Placement in TRANSFORMERS 4

0
0

Earlier today, I posted a video about the ridiculous product placement in Transformers 4. Now we are hearing from THR that Paramount Pictures' failure to add one sponsor may cost them $27 million. Chinese company Wulang Karst Tourism is suing for Paramount's failure to live up to a deal in which they said they would add Wulang's logo in the film. The real reason this is a HUGE deal for Paramount is that this company happens to be government-run by China, a country that has immense controls over what movies do and don't play in its theaters.

Losing the Chinese market would cost Paramount well over $27 million dollars in profits, so they'll likely settle. Weirdly enough, Paramount thought they were in the clear because Michael Bay did a commercial for the company for free and then left the sets and props behind. Such a weird situation.

Watch Jack Black Confused as Hell On a Korean Game Show

Jack Black is a good sport, even when he's confused as hell. The actor appeared on the Korean game show Infinite Challenge and attempted to blow out a candle with a stocking on his head. It's about as hilarious and weird as you would imagine. Why don't we do more shows like this here?!

Here's What One of CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR's Post-Credits Scenes is Overseas

0
0

I have not seen Captain America: Civil War yet and I really don't like spoilers, so normally I'd avoid news about one of the movie's post-credits scenes until I'd seen the film for myself. But the movie is already playing in some theaters internationally, BirthMoviesDeath found out what one of the post-credits scenes is from one of their sources, and it's not super spoilery, so I let my curiosity get the better of me.

If you'd rather not know anything, click away now.

Ready? Here you go:

The post-credits tag features Spider-Man. It's short, and the basic set up here is that he's exploring the new suit that Tony Stark has given him (and which we see in action in the big airport battle). The reveal: his new goggles have a heads up display, making this a much more high tech Spidey than we have ever seen before. Then there's a bit of onscreen text that says "Spider-Man Will Return," which is the usual James Bond thing (and which Marvel has done a couple of times as well).

It's unclear exactly how many post-credits scenes there will be on the American release of Civil War, but a month ago, the Russo Brothers said the following about whether or not Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange would pop up after the credits roll:

We can’t say who is going to be in it but we can say that there certainly could be one, or two, maybe three. We can confirm that you should stay sat in your seats when the movie is done.

So this Spider-Man tag might end up being just one of a possible three post-credits scenes. Like I said, it's not massively spoilery, considering A) we already know Spidey is in the movie and B) there have been rumors about him wearing multiple suits in the film for months now, so it's just a confirmation of those early reports. I'm very intrigued about the idea of a high-tech Spider-Man moving forward, though. What do you think?
