Slick Retro Movie Poster for THE PAPERBOY

The first movie poster has been released for Precious director Lee Daniels' new thriller The Paperboy, which is based on the novel by Pete Dexter. The story follows a Miami Times reporter as he returns to his Florida hometown to investigate the imprisonment of a death row inmate. The film has a solid cast of actors that includes  Matthew McConaughey, Zac Efron, John Cusack, and Nicole Kidman.

I love the the retro style of this poster. Daniels has proven that he's a solid director. It should turn out to be a solidly good movie, but I'm still not sold on Efron as a serious actor.

Here's the official synopsis:

A directionless young man helps his reporter brother investigate the possible wrongful conviction of a man on death row, and in the process, falls for the woman whom the convict has been romancing through prison correspondence.

Beautiful Minimalist Sci-Fi Movie Posters

Here are some beautiful minimalist movie posters created by David Moscati. If you are a fan of movies and science fiction, you owe it to yourself to check out these sweet posters.

I like Moscati's take on movie posters. It shows that he is also a true fan:

Every film, no matter how complex, can be broken down to one simple meaning. That one goal being the driving force for the entire production, in this case less is more. Minimal Movies follows a design principle based off of the laws of simplicity. By examining each film to its core – a design is fashioned by talking literal aesthetics and subjective connotations and presented in it’s own as well as classic film poster style.

The Sovereign Series: Science Fiction Collection

Sovereign Science-Fiction is a Poster collection based upon the top five Science-Fiction Films as picked by Tom Menna Industries’ list of the Top 25 Science-Fiction films to date. The films listed were based not only on their excellence in the genre and in filmmaking – but also on concept, creativity, and innovativeness – as well as the influence they had (and still have) on today’s Cinema, Science Fiction and Pop-Culture(s). The designs are meant to reflect this spirit.

Top 10 Pirated Films of 2011

There's a lot of people in this world that don't believe in paying to see movies. It's hard to blame them though, going to the movies is just getting too damn expensive these days, especially with the extra cost of seeing a film in 3D or in IMAX. I don't condone stealing movies at all, I'm completely against it. I'm just saying I can see why people don't want to have to pay for them. Every year Hollywood loses a ton of money because of these pirated films, but it looks like illegal downloads are down from last year

Fast Five leads the pack this year with 9,260,00 downloads followed by The Hangover II, Thor, Source Code, I Am Number Four, Sucker Punch, 127 Hours, Rango, The King's Speech, and Death Hallows Part II. Check out the chart below for all the details.

Sylvester Stallone continues to show off his ripped body to prove to the world that he can still kick everyone's ass. The image above comes from his new film Bullet in the Head. The guy looks like he's in the best shape of his life; it's crazy!

Walter Hill is directing the movie and the story follows New Orleans hitman (Stallone) who teams with a New York City detective in a high-stakes investigation that leads from the dingy back alleys of New Orleans all the way to the power corridors of Washington, D.C. The unlikely duo, brought together by two vicious murders, take on all who stand in their way, and are willing to sacrifice everything to exact revenge.

The movie is set to hit theaters on April 13th, 2012.

THE ROCKETEER Blu-Ray Review - A Must-Watch For Comic Book Lovers

Joe Johnston’s The Rocketeer is one of the best comic book movies of the ‘90’s and a must-watch for any comic book lover. Disney recently released a beautifully crisp 20th Anniversary Edition of the film that is based on writer/illustrator Dave Stevens’ comic series. I loved The Rocketeer when it was first released in 1991 and remember seeing it in theaters multiple times. What I loved as a teen, I now love even more as an adult. When I first wathed it, I was mainly interested in the high-flying action sequences and larger-than-life villains. On this recent viewing, I came to realize how awesome the cast and dialogue are. The film stars Billy Campbell, Jennnifer Connnelly, Alan Arkin, Terry O’Quinn, Timothy Dalton, and Paul Sorvino.

The film follows a down-and-out stunt pilot Cliff Secord (Billy Campbell), his mechanic/friend Peevy Peabody (Alan Arkin) and his girlfriend Jenny Blake (Jennifer Connelly). The trio stumble across a rocket pack prototype that was stolen from Howard Hughes (Terry O'Quinn) by a group of mobsters. In an attempt to turn around his flying career, Secord transforms himself into the Rocketeer.  He becomes a public hero but ends up being sought by the FBI, gangster Eddie Valentine (Paul Sorvino), and movie star Neville Sinclair (Timothy Dalton). The chase is on in this high-flying story that involves gun-toting thugs, Hollywood playboys, and even Nazis.

The Rocketeer looks superb on Blu-ray because of a sweet 1080p video transfer. It looked even better on my home theater than I remember it looking on the big screen, granted movie theaters have had major upgrades in tech since then. The film has a number of goofs but no more than a film released this year. The visual effects were done by ILM, and they have definitely not stood up over the years. I still think that the film looks damn good for this transfer.

The pace and intensity of The Rocketeer is on par with some of my favorite films, and match up to Joe Johnston’s work on Raiders of the Lost Ark. The flying sequences are my favorite, but there are also some cool scenes when Cliff’s feet are on the ground. I especially love the sequence when Jenny and Neville are on a date. The villlains are great in that scene and throughout the film. The mobsters are typical pulpy villains, but then they are topped by Nazis. Just like Indiana Jones, I hate Nazis, but the Rocketeer is not phased one bit and steps up to the task of saving the day.

As I said earlier, the cast is great. As a fan of Lost I was reminded that O’Quinn was in the film as Howard Hughes. Billy Campbell is perfect as the hero, and it is a shame that he was not in too many movies between then and now. Luckily, he is great in AMC’s The Killing. Alan Arkin has such perfect line delivery, and is a fabulous character actor. I like Arkin in just about every role he takes on. Jennifer Connnelly is definitely nice eye candy for this movie, but it is not one of her best roles.

Special Features:

Movies are now made with the idea of a definite Blu-ray release in the near future. That means that the cast and top line crew will be involved in behind-the-scenese videos and interviews during filming that will be incldued in the special features. The Rocketeer is an example of a film that was left behind by Disney. The 1999 DVD release was craptastic. While the Blu-ray look stunning, the special features are literally non-existent. This is the exact opposite of a Criterion Collection release.

In Conclusion:

Joe Johnston did a wonderful job directing this film. I can see why Marvel chose him to direct Captain America: The First Avenger (which I loved). The Rocketeer is a fun action movie for the whole family, and a must-watch for any comic book lover. The Rocketeer is currently available on Blu-Ray and DVD.

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES - New Spoiler Scene Description

It seems like fanboys and fangirls want as much information as they can get on Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises. Even with as much that's been released for the film so far, there is still a good amount of mystery surrounding the film and what the story actually includes.

The LA Times posted a spoilerish scene description, which was revealed in an intro to an interview with Catwoman. Not sure why they decided to post a description to a scene like this that is clearly a spoiler, but they did, and now it's available for you to read... if you want.

If you do decide to read it tell us what you think!

Gotham City is a war zone. A ruthless madman named Bane has ripped away any sense of security and the citizens, haggard and clutching suitcases with refugee anxiety, sit behind barbed wire waiting to see what will blow up next. A hooded prisoner is dragged in – it's Bruce Wayne, one of Gotham's most famous faces – but the eyes of the crowd go instead to the woman in black standing at the top of the staircase.

"Sorry to spoil things, boys, but Bane needs these guys himself," says sultry Selina Kyle, played here by actress Anne Hathaway, navigating the steps with stiletto heels that, on closer inspection, turn out to have serrated edges capable of leaving nasty claw marks in a fight. She also wears high-tech goggles that, when not in use, flip up and resemble feline ears.

Head on over to Hero Complex to read the full interview with Anne Hathaway. Here's a little expert where she talks about her character and Gotham City.

Gotham City is full of grace. You look at Heath’s performance as the Joker, there was a lot of madness there but there was also a grace and he had a code there. There’s a lot of belief and codes of behavior in Gotham and my character has one, too. A lot of the way she moves and interacts with people is informed by her worldview. Chris has given us all such complex, defined, sophisticated worldviews that it’s just a matter of doing your homework and getting underneath the character’s skin.

Awesome PROMETHEUS Style ALIEN Teaser Trailer

An awesome teaser trailer has been cut for Ridley Scott's 1979 sci-fi horror classic Alien, and what makes this edit so cool is the fact that it was done in the same style of Scott's recent film Prometheus. The trailer was done extremely well, and it got me excited to want to watch Alien all over again.

The trailer was created by YouTube user heresjohnny1991, and he basically took the sound and lettering idea from the Prometheus trailer and cut it together with some great imagery from Alien. Check out the Alien teaser trailer below and tell us what you think!

Arnold Schwarzenegger's next film changes title to BLACK SUNDAY

Arnold Schwarzenegger has been jumping right back into the action ever since ending his political career. He just finished playing a border sheriff who faces off with a drug lord in The Last Stand, and is slated to have a larger role in The Expendables 2, which arrives next summer.According to The Arnold Fans, the action icon is set to play an immortal in his next sci-fi/action thriller soon.

The film has just gotten a new title. It was initially called Black Sands, and is now titled Black Sunday. “I’m kind of an angel,” stated Schwarzenegger. There are not any plot specifics available at this time, but it is believed that the film is a mix of Constantine and Commmando. Arnie is speculated to be playing an archangel who takes on weapons dealers.
Many of you may be concerned about Scwarzenegger (now 64) being able to live up to his action icon status. I have a lot of faith in him, and am looking forward to seeing Last Stand and Expendables 2. One thing is for sure, he still looks good holding a machine gun, as can be seen above in the screen capture from the Expendables 2 trailer.

Top 15 Movies I Didn't See in 2011 Because They Looked Terrible

$

So I thought what the hell, why not make a Top 15 list of movies that I didn't see over the last year because of how bad they looked. My decision not to see any of these movies was based on how bad they looked due to the trailers that the studio released for them, as well as some of the actors that were involved with the projects.

I can't really give any kind of commentary on the films because I haven't seen any of them, and I seriously doubt I will ever watch them. This list is based purely off the fact that they looked absolutely terrible.

So here's the list, each one accompanied by the movie trailer that turned me off on the film. And yes, there are two Nicolas Cage movies on the list. This list is in no particular order, look through them below and tell us what movies you avoided in 2011 because they awful they looked to you.

1. The Smurfs

2. Beastly

3. Spy Kids 4D

4. Zookeeper

5. The Roommate

6. Abduction

7. Season of the Witch

8. Drive Angry 3D

9. Conan The Barbarian

10. Mr. Popper's Penguins

11. New Years Eve

12. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1

13. Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son

14. Jack and Jill

15. Alivn and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked

Sci Fi Brothel 'Alien Cathouse' Coming To Nevada?

I'm not sure how many of our readers will be into this news, but I feel I'm doing a disservice to the community it I don't report on it. Alien Cathouse, one of the first sci-fi inspired cathouses, will be coming to Las Vegas, Nevada sometime next year.

The owner, Dennis Hof (who apparently owns the Moonlite Bunny Ranch?), is teaming up with Madam Heidi Fleiss to bring you the "ultimate sci-fi experience".

Featuring girls donning costumes from Star Trek, Star Wars, and many other sci-fi elements, the place promises to recreate various fantasies of any geek...for a price of course.

It seems odd...but then again who better to promote to than a community who has been known to spend thousands of dollars on frivolous items to begin with?

My only hope is they can recreate my fantasy.
