Killer Shark Movie MEG Might Replace Eli Roth with NATIONAL TREASURE Director

There are a handful of killer shark movies in the works in Hollywood right now, and one of them may have just snagged a new director.

Eli Roth has left Meg, the film adaptation of Steve Alten's bestseller novel that centers on two guys trying to destroy a killer shark off the coast of California. That shark is Meg, short for Megalodon, a 60-foot beast that is one of the most notorious badasses in Earth's history; the real animal went extinct years ago, but in the book, there's one still alive that terrorizes the West Coast. Roth was set to direct the project, but Deadline says he "quietly exited" the project and now National Treasure director Jon Turteltaub is in talks to bring it to the big screen. No deal has been signed yet, but even though I don't normally dig Roth's movies, I still have to consider this a downgrade just because he sounded so much better suited to the material.

The setting of the book is being moved from California to China in order to allow for better distribution and co-financing overseas, in yet another attempt to capitalize on the growing Chinese market. Here's the synopsis of the book:

On a top-secret dive into the Pacific Ocean’s deepest canyon, Jonas Taylor found himself face-to-face with the largest and most ferocious predator in the history of the animal kingdom. The sole survivor of the mission, Taylor is haunted by what he’s sure he saw but still can’t prove exists – Carcharodon megalodon, the massive mother of the great white shark. The average prehistoric Meg weighs in at twenty tons and could tear apart a Tyrannosaurus rex in seconds.
Written off as a crackpot suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, Taylor refuses to forget the depths that nearly cost him his life. With a Ph.D. in paleontology under his belt, Taylor spends years theorizing, lecturing, and writing about the possibility that Meg still feeds at the deepest levels of the sea. But it takes an old friend in need to get him to return to the water, and a hotshot female submarine pilot to dare him back into a high-tech miniature sub.
Diving deeper than he ever has before, Taylor will face terror like he’s never imagined, and what he finds could turn the tides bloody red until the end of time. MEG is about to surface. When she does, nothing and no one is going to be safe, and Jonas must face his greatest fear once again.

Cool Details on Batman's Calculated Attack on Superman in BATMAN V SUPERMAN

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is built around the fact that two of our favorite superheroes are going to fight each other. That's the main draw of the movie and a story has been built around that which will lead audiences into Justice League. I'm incredibly excited to see how the fight sequences between Batman and Superman play out in the movie. We've seen bits and pieces of it in the trailers, but I imagine that's just a very brief glimpse at what director Zack Snyder has in store for us.

In a recent interview with EW, Snyder spoke about Batman and how he takes on Superman. It's just not wearing a suit of armor that gives Batman the upper hand — his greatest weapon is his mind. When talking about their differences in fighting style, the director explained the following:

SPOILERS Ahead:

“Superman doesn’t have to be as much of a chess player as Batman,” says Snyder. Superman has might on his side, but before the fists start flying, we see an armored Batman placing various traps in an abandoned stockyard, then walking along and driving a Kryptonite spear into the ground. “He paces it off,” Snyder says. “Then when he throws Superman, the spear is right there. So you’re like, wait a minute, did he [plan] every bit? He know every move?”

That's the Batman I was really hoping to see in this movie! He's going to out-maneuver the shit out of Superman. It sounds like Snyder actually captured what makes each of these characters so awesome and iconic. I also included a new TV spot below that shows off some footage of these heroes slugging it out.

Henry Cavill Teases That Superman Might Appear in WONDER WOMAN

$

Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment are obviously approaching their cinematic universe of heroes and villains differently than Marvel Studios, but one thing seems like it'll remain the same: there will be characters that crossover and connect one film to another. Ben Affleck's Batman is going to show up in Suicide Squad, there are rumors that Jared Leto's Joker will make an appearance in Batman v Superman (although that scene may have been left on the cutting room floor, if it ever existed in the first place), and now actor Henry Cavill has teased a possible appearance of Superman in the upcoming Wonder Woman solo film.

Cavill gave a brief interview with Brazilian magazine Superinteressante and was asked whether he'd show up in Suicide Squad alongside Affleck's Batman:

“Not in ‘Suicide Squad.”

That makes sense, considering Suicide Squad seems more like a rough-and-tumble movie that wouldn't need to include a god-like hero. But will Supes pop up in Wonder Woman alongside Gal Gadot? Heroic Hollywood's translation says:

“In ‘Wonder Woman,’ I haven’t heard anything yet, but watch that space. And in anything else, I don’t know just yet if anything else gets shot between.”

"Watch that space" certainly seems to indicate it's a strong possibility that he'll show up, even if it's only a cameo. On a world-building level for WB and DC, it seems like a no-brainer. They're going to establish an explicit connection between all of these characters in BvS and Justice League, so they might as well keep that going. And on a business level, I'm sure there's some executive sitting in an office figuring out a reason to give Superman a different suit or something in Wonder Woman so they can sell a few more action figures. Again, this isn't a done deal yet, but I definitely won't be surprised to see The Big Blue Boy Scout fly in for a scene or two when Wonder Woman hits theaters on June 23, 2017.

Duncan Jones Shares Some Behind The Scenes WARCRAFT Photos of The Film's Practical Sets

I've never played World of Warcraft, so when Warcraft director Duncan Jones hopped on Twitter to share some behind-the-scenes images of the film's sets, I didn't get the jolt of excitement I assume many of you will that comes with seeing one of your fictional places come to life. For me, I'm just more impressed that this much of the setting was actually constructed practically and not simply created as a digital extension in post-production.

We'll find out how it all looks in context in just a few months when Warcraft arrives in theaters on June 10.

Benedict Cumberbunnies Have Arrived Just in Time For Easter

Last year, a life-size chocolate version of Benedict Cumberbatch took the internet by storm. Now, the same chocolatier is back with Benedict Cumberbunnies: a horrific melding of an Easter bunny and the famed English actor sporting a bow tie.

This is the brain child of artist Jen Lindsay-Clark from Chocolatician, and it's described like this:

The Cumberbunny, which wears a bow tie and costs £50 ($70), is "a delicious Belgian chocolate rabbit with a handsome face and a tasty bottom," according to the Chocolatician website. It weighs 400 grammes, is "hand-glazed with edible lustre dust" and can be ordered in milk or dark chocolate.

I understand that the actor isn't thrilled with the nickname many of his more rabid fans have given themselves ("Cumberbitches), so at the very least, maybe "Cumberbunnies" will provide a better alternative. In any case, this is really freakin' weird. Could you bite into one of these things?

Zack Snyder Gives Details on R-Rated BATMAN V SUPERMAN Ultimate Cut

$
0
0

About a week ago, we learned that Zack Snyder and Warner Bros. intended to release an R-rated Ultimate Cut of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice on Blu-ray and DVD. Now Snyder has revealed some details about that cut of the movie to EW in a new interview:

While he wouldn't say exactly how much longer the Ultimate Cut will be, he did comment on the length of the theatrical cut:

“We were just like, ‘Okay, look. We’re not making a three-hour movie. I mean, even I didn’t want to make a three-hour movie,” Snyder says. “I drove the cuts probably harder than anyone. The studio, they were willing to let the movie indulge pretty hard. But I felt like it’s at a manageable two-and-a-half hours. Let’s also not forget the credits are super long, the end credits. So the movie’s closer to two hours and 22 minutes.”

This morning, we wrote about how Jena Malone's scene(s) have been cut out of the movie, but those will appear on the Ultimate Cut. Even now, though, Snyder won't reveal what character she's playing:

“I think we should keep it private, but it’s nothing that’s been talked about,” Snyder says. “She’s definitely not Robin or Batgirl. I’m happy to say that.”

EW hints that other heroes may have expanded roles in the Ultimate Cut, so we can probably expect to see a bit more of people like Jason Momoa and Ezra Miller than what will appear theatrically:

Some of what’s being added to the “Ultimate Edition” counts as a spoiler, so we won’t reveal all of the extra material. Suffice to say, some minor characters in the theatrical cut are given expanded storylines. And a few other actors will join Malone in being rescued from the cutting room floor.
...
“And then there’s just a lot of these Easter Eggs in the Director’s Cut that I think are gonna be fun for everyone.” Some of the additions are aimed at teasing future movies, like 2017’s Justice League film, which Snyder begins shooting in April. “There’s one giant one that I won’t tell you about yet that speaks to what’s gonna go on in the greater Justice League universe,” he says.

The new cut of the movie received the R-rating for the relatively vague reason of "for sequences of violence," but producer Charles Roven says that it's not going to be a gorefest or anything like that:

“There’s not a lot of blood in our movies,” he says. “The ratings board also judges their PG-13 and R ratings by what they consider to be a level of intensity and how much that intensity goes throughout the entire movie. There are some pretty intense scenes in Batman v Superman, and if they went on longer and had that same level of intensity, that might cause the ratings board to shift their rating.”

So all of the fan speculation about Joker brutally murdering Robin or paralyzing Barbara Gordon on screen in the Ultimate Cut seems like it might be slightly off the mark — or if those scenes are present, they probably won't be much different than what we see in the normal cut this month. You can read more about it over at EW.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice arrives in theaters on March 25.

Watch: Steven Spielberg's Career Summarized in Only 30 Shots

When a director has committed as many iconic images to film as Steven Spielberg, it has to be incredibly tough to try to pull out only thirty shots that encapsulate and typify his entire career. But that's exactly what editor Jacob T. Swinney has done in his latest video, summing up the world's most famous (and maybe most beloved) director's work in just over two and a half minutes as a beautiful piece of John Williams' music from the Hook score plays underneath.

What are your favorite Spielberg shots that didn't make the cut here?

DEATH WISH Remake Starring Bruce Willis Gets New Life With Pair of New Directors

$

A remake of the 1974 film Death Wish has been brewing for years, with The Grey director Joe Carnahan attached at one point before bailing on the project over disagreements with the studio when they wanted Bruce Willis to star. But after cycling through another director a few years ago, Deadline reports that Paramount and MGM have now hired Big Bad Wolves directors Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado as the latest pair to try to bring this project to life.

Willis is reportedly still attached to star, and Carnahan's screenplay — which has since been rewritten by Nightcrawler's Dan Gilroy and Justified's Graham Yost — is what they're working with now. It reportedly sticks pretty close to the original 1972 novel, which follows an accountant who becomes a vigilante after his wife and daughter are attacked by muggers in New York City. Charles Bronson starred in the original movie adaptation and its four sequels.

Here's the thing, though: there basically already was a remake of Death Wish, and it's called Death Sentence*. James Wan directed it back in 2007, and it starred Kevin Bacon in a role extremely similar to the one Bronson played in the '70s, '80s, and '90s. It's a stylish and gritty exploration of the same sort of themes, and even though I haven't seen Big Bad Wolves, I can't imagine a modern update tackling that same general topic any better than Wan did a few years ago.

What do you think?

*The Death Sentence book is a sequel to the original Death Wish novel, so it's technically not a remake.

Editor Jaume R. Lloret created a supercut of scenes from movies and their remakes that play out simultaneously right next to each other. While I'm not entirely sure of the larger point Lloret wants us to take from this, it's cool on a surface level just to watch the similarities and, sometimes, the changes that filmmakers decided to make in a given scene. This video contains a few examples of godawful remakes (Total Recall, I'm lookin' at you), but also some good ones, too (The Fly immediately jumps out at me).

23 JUMP STREET-MEN IN BLACK Crossover Moves Forward With Director James Bobin

Back in 2014 we learned that Sony Pictures was planning to develop a crossover film that would combine the world of Men in Black with the 21 Jump Street franchise. According to Variety, the studio is moving forward with their plan on this movie and they are in talks to hire James Bobin to direct the movie. Bobin is the same director who directed The Muppets, The Muppets: Most Wanted, and the upcoming Disney film Alice Through the Looking Glass

Phil Lord and Chris Miller directed the first two Jump Street films, which were both hilarious. They've got so much going on right now, though, that they aren't able to direct this crazy crossover movie. They are currently directing the Han Solo standalone movie for Lucasfilm. They are still attached as producers, though.

Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum will return to reprise their roles as Jenko and Schmidt, respectively. Unfortunately Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones won't be back to reprise their roles as Agent Jay and Agent Kay. The plan in to reboot the franchise with younger talent. You can bet every young actor in Hollywood will be going after these Men in Black roles.

There are no details regarding the story but there is a script that is written and ready to go when they're ready to go. Several directors have met with the studio for the job, but sources say Bobin is their number one choice. Are you excited about crossover movie?

RICK AND MORTY Season 3 Coming To TV This Year

Co-creator Dan Harmon was at Magic City Comic Con earlier this year and dropped some really schwifty news: instead of returning in 2017, Rick and Morty will be back on TV this year.

No actual date has been set yet, but Harmon told the crowd:

“I think Season 3 is—we’re targeting around the end of this year,” Harmon said, to cheers from the audience. “You guys do realize we’re at the beginning of this year?”

Regardless of when it comes back this year, anytime will be earlier than when Mr. Poopybutthole said it would be, and I'll take that as a win. It would have been a shame to go all year without a new season, especially with all the hype and amazing reception the show has received.

Additionally, Rick and Morty will be back with 14 episodes as opposed to the first two seasons of 11 and 10 episodes. This is GREAT news. Perhaps the extra episodes will be used to continue the story that the season 2 finale left us hanging on. Or it might just be more weirdly intelligent fart jokes. Who knows? Who cares? Any and all of the above is fine with me.

Thanks to MCU Exchange, we have some additional promo art for Captain America: Civil War. Each piece offers us a new look at the character being played by Elizabeth Olsen. This is one of the most powerful characters in the MCU and I love the new look they gave her in Civil War. These pieces of concept art give us the best look that we’ve seen of Scarlet Witch so far.

She’ll be fighting alongside Captain America in the Civil War, and she’s the most powerful member of his team. It will be interesting to see how they actually utilize her in the story. I hope it’s more than just a couple of scenes. I’d really like to see this character grow further. It’s safe to assume she’ll be in Avengers: Infinity War, but I don’t think she’ll ever get a solo film.

It sounds like this movie is going to be a huge hit. We've already heard from the director that the film's finale is "brutal, both physically and emotionally" and according to someone that has already seen it via Birth.Movies.Death, "the last act plays out as an emotional horror movie because the film gives both Tony and Steve solid reasoning, and because it truly makes you feel the depths of this schism."

It's hard not to be excited for this movie, and I think it's going to give us something special. The movie will be released on May 6th!
