MONEYBALL Director Tackling New Adaptation of A CHRISTMAS CAROL

0
0

Do we really need another adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic A Christmas Carol? The story has been put on film almost twenty times already, not to mention the hundreds (probably thousands) of stage productions that have taken place since the book's first publication in 1843. Robert Zemeckis directed a CG version starring Jim Carrey that came out in 2009, which wasn't that long ago! But THR reports that Moneyball and Foxcatcher director Bennett Miller has another adaptation in the works from writer Tom Stoppard (Brazil, Shakespeare in Love).

At least they aren't going to try to do another modernized version of the story to make it "cool" or to try to appeal to a teenaged audience. This one will be set in the 19th century, just like the original novella. Mega-producers Megan Ellison and Scott Rudin are producing alongside Miller and Jennifer Fox, so this definitely has some heavy hitters in its corner, but I can't shake the fact that yet another retelling of this story seems unnecessary at this point unless they can do something that really differentiates it from all of the other adaptations.

First POWER RANGERS Photo, and Director Talks "Edgy" Costumes and Rita Repulsa

first-power-rangers-photo-and-new-info-on-the-costumes-and-rita-repulsa

The Power Rangers assemble in the first photo from the new film, which is currently in production. The group is comprised of actors Dacre Montgomery (A Few Less Men) as Jason the Red Ranger, RJ Cyler (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) as Billy the Blue Ranger, Naomi Scott (The 33) as Kimberly the Pink Ranger, Becky G (Empire) as Trini the Yellow Ranger, and Ludi Lin (Monster Hunt) as Zack the Black Ranger. I'm sure we'll get to see them in their fighting costumes soon enough.

While talking about the costumes in an interview with EW, director Dean Israelite said that the new costumes are “really modern, edgy, badass, [and have an] aspirational quality.” He went on a little further:

“We’ve really pushed ourselves to make them feel different from any other superhero costume that’s out there. One key that’s different to the Power Ranger suits is that they’re not really suits that people get into. They’re suits that morph onto our kids, so they already have this almost metaphysical quality to them.”

The first thought that popped into my head when I read that was how that's exactly what Warner Bros. did with Green Lantern's costume. Hopefully they don't take it down that road, and if they do, hopefully it's better than what happened with Green Lantern.

The director went on to talk about the villain in the film, Rita Repulsa, and how Elizabeth Banks is the perfect actress to play the character:

“It’s very exciting that we got [Banks], and I think what she loves is the opportunity to really embrace the insanity and deliciousness of Rita Repulsa in terms of how weird and wonderful that character was, and really dive into and consume that character. You should always be off-balance when you’re watching her. Is she insane? Is she totally calculated? Does she know what she’s doing? Elizabeth can toe that line really well.”

Hopefully Israelite is going to give the fans what they want. I'll hold off any judgment until I actually see some footage from the film, but it'd be great if the director actually gives us something awesome. Do you think he'll be able to pull it off? Here's the synopsis:

Saban's Power Rangers follows five ordinary high school kids who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove - and the world - is on the verge of being obliterated by n alien threats. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late.

Power Rangers is set to be released on March 24, 2017.

Ian McShane Confirms His GAME OF THRONES Role and The Return of a "Dead" Character

Warning: spoilers ahead for the upcoming sixth season of Game of Thrones.

Ever since Ian McShane was added to the cast of the new season of Game of Thrones, book readers have speculated about whether or not he'd be playing Septon Meribald, a worshipper of the Seven who has a complicated past and travels the riverlands preaching to the townspeople there. In the books, Meribald guides Brienne and Pod (along with Ser Hyle Hunt) to the Quiet Isle, where they encounter a character called the Gravedigger, a huge man whose face is kept hidden. Book fans theorize that this is actually Sandor Clegane, aka The Hound, and now McShane has basically confirmed that theory.

When speaking with BBC Breakfast (via THR), McShane said:

“My character is an ex-warrior who has become a peacenik. So, I have this group of peaceful — sort of a cult, a peaceful tribe. I bring back a much-loved character who everybody thinks is dead.”

In the episode in which Brienne fights The Hound and Arya leaves him to die, we never actually see the character die on screen, so the idea of bringing him back this season makes a lot of sense — especially when you consider how much The Hound hates his brother, The Mountain, who was also "resurrected" last season by Qyburn as Cersei's hulking knight Ser Robert Strong. Fans are already speculating about an ultimate battle between the two brothers (awesomely dubbed "Cleganebowl"), so this seems to hint that those speculations may end up being accurate. We'll have to wait and see, of course, but I'd say things are looking pretty good for The Hound at this point.

Game of Thrones returns to HBO on April 24.

Romance Drama CAROL Gets a Fake VFX Breakdown From Funny or Die

Whenever a cool visual effects breakdown video pops up for a TV show or movie that we like, we try to write about it here on the site. They're often pretty cool to watch, and at the very least, writing about them is a good way to pay tribute to the hundreds of people who work on a movie behind the scenes and never get any recognition for their long hours and hard work. These videos are all pretty similar — if you've seen one, you can instantly identify the structure they use — and Funny or Die thought it would be funny to make a fake VFX reel for Carol, Todd Haynes' 2015 romantic drama that stars Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara.

It's a ridiculous takedown of the types of VFX videos we write about all the time, but it still made me laugh out loud a handful of times.

ABC Has Renewed Marvel’s AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. for a Fourth Season

abc-has-renewed-marvels-agents-of-shield-for-a-fourth-season

Marvel has officially announced that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been renewed for a fourth season on ABC. I’m not a huge fan of the series, but I’m all caught up with what is going on. I don’t think the series is really that good, but I watch it to keep up to date on how the Marvel Universe is shaping up. The series tends to grab me every once in a while, but the majority of the time I’m just left feeling disappointed. There’s a big enough loyal fan base, though, to warrant a fourth season.

I'm surprised that the renewal came so early. They usually don't come until May, but I guess they have some big plans for the series with season four being greenlit this early.

Before we can embark on Season 4, though, Director Coulson and his tireless team still have to face the menace of Hive and the world's growing concerns about the number of Inhumans popping up across the globe. There's plenty to come as we begin the second half of Season 3, and you won't want to miss a minute of it!

The season three mid-season premiere is this coming Tuesday at 9:00pm ET. Are you happy to hear that there's another full season on the horizon?

Jena Malone’s Scenes Were Cut Out of BATMAN V SUPERMAN

A few new details have been revealed regarding Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. We have known for awhile that Jenna Malone was cast in a role that still has yet to be revealed. It looks like we’re going to have to wait a little longer before we find out.

EW is reporting that Malone’s character was cut out of the theatrical release of the film. Apparently, her character will show up in the R-rated extended version of the movie that will be released on DVD/Blu-ray. That cut will be nearly three hours long, and that’s when we’ll find out what character Malone is playing, unless it leaks out beforehand. There have been rumors that she could be playing Barbara Gordon or Carrie Kelley, which you can read about here.

If it is Barbara Gordon, I wonder if it will incorporate a flashback scene of the Joker beating the hell out of her like he did in The Killing Joke comic arc. I imagine that would be a very brutal R-rated scene. We’ll just have to wait and see how Malone actually fits into the story when the special edition DVD/Blu-ray is released.

George Lucas Should’ve Followed This 1994 STAR WARS Style Guide

george-lucas-shouldve-followed-this-1994-star-wars-style-guide

West End Games had a Star Wars tabletop RPG from 1987 to 1999, and it’s one of the many things that fans had to immerse themselves in the Star Wars universe when no movies were being made. Over those years, West End regularly released supplements and expansions.

In 1994 West End released a writer’s guide for authors who were looking to write content for the RPG. Excerpts from that guide have been released by Pablo Hidalgo, who happens to be part of Lucasfilm’s story team.

The information found in this guide is great stuff, and there are things here that not only should George Lucas have followed when making the prequel trilogy, but that Lucasfilm should take note and follow in the upcoming films they are making. You can find several great gems from the book that were tweeted by Hidalgo below. Read them over and let us know what you think in the comments.

We Might Not See Green Lantern Until JUSTICE LEAGUE - PART 2

0
0

We’ve previously heard rumors that Green Lantern might make an appearance in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. But he won't be showing up in that movie at all. In fact, its looks like we’re going to have to wait to until Justice League - Part 2 before we see him at the soonest… maybe. Greg Silverman, President of Creative Development and Worldwide Production at Warner Bros. revealed the following information about the character and WB’s plans for him:

“[Green Lantern] is an incredible character. He’s actually multiple incredible characters. There’s real opportunity there. We didn’t do a great job on that first Green Lantern movie. This is a character who deserves to be treated in the same way that Batman and Superman and Wonder Woman are being treated now, which is with great reverence. I guess I can say to the Green Lantern fans: if they can be patient with us, I think they’ll be really happy.”

He goes on to reveal that they don’t know exactly when they are going to introduce him into the DCEU. He says that it might happen in Justice League Part 2, but that’s not even a guarantee:

“Every beat of the movie is not yet worked out. So there’s the possibility that he may or may not be in Justice League 2. For now, we felt that we were introducing enough characters that the best possible place we could put Green Lantern is some introduction in Justice League 2, or barring that, a movie after.”

So if you are excited to see what they have planned for this new incarnation of Green Lantern, you’re just going to have to be patient. One thing is fore sure, enough time will have passed that no one will be thinking about the Ryan Reynolds movie that bombed. But then again, I don't think anyone is thinking about it now.

GHOSTBUSTERS Trailer Re-Edited with All the Slapstick Comedy Cut Out

There were a lot of mixed reactions to the Ghostbusters trailer that was released yesterday. A lot of people didn't seem to care for the Paul Feig-style comedy. Well, I've got a great version of that trailer that was re-cut by YouTube user Mike Colver, and it cuts out all of the slapstick type comedy that people were complaining about. This fan trailer definitely gives the movie more of a badass vibe. Check it out and let us know what you think in the comments below. I think a trailer like this would have gotten fans a little more hyped up about the movie.

Joss Whedon Returns to Marvel Comics to Tell a New CAPTAIN AMERICA Story

As many of you already know, Joss Whedon worked with Marvel Comics writing a run of Astonishing X-Men that brought Colossus back and introduced several other X-Men characters. He’s done a good amount of work for the company in past, and now he’s coming back to write another comic for them to celebrate Captain America’s 75th anniversary.

ComicBook.com confirmed with Marvel that Whedon will be re-teaming with John Cassaday, who worked with the writer on reviving Astonishing X-Men. The report gives the following information:

Appearing in Captain America: Sam Wilson #7, the two will tell an all-new story celebrating the legacy and legend of Captain America. The issue will also feature a main story from series creative team Nick Spencer & Daniel Acuna, and another backup by Greg Rucka & Mike Perkins

This wouldn’t be Cassaday’s first time working with Cap either. He did the art for an issue of Fallen Son: The Death Of Captain America as well as a Captain America limited series with John Ney Riber.

Captain America: Sam Rogers #7 has a final order cutoff date of March 7th, and the issue will be released in comic shops on March 30th.

I’m just happy to see Whedon getting back in on some Marvel action. I’m still waiting to see what he decides to do for his next film project, though.

Frank Miller Says Darren Aronofsky's BATMAN Film Project Was Way Too Dark

0
0

Years ago, legendary Batman comic book writer Frank Miller teamed up with director Darren Aronofsky to make a new Batman movie for Warner Bros. They made their pitch to the studio and had a script written, but it was ultimately rejected. In an interview with THR, Miller talks about the project and reveals that it was just too damn dark:

"It was the first time I worked on a Batman project with somebody whose vision of Batman was darker than mine. My Batman was too nice for him. We would argue about it, and I'd say, 'Batman wouldn't do that, he wouldn't torture anybody,' and so on. We hashed out a screenplay, and we were wonderfully compensated, but then Warner Bros. read it and said, 'We don't want to make this movie.' The executive wanted to do a Batman he could take his kids to. And this wasn't that. It didn't have the toys in it. The Batmobile was just a tricked-out car. And Batman turned his back on his fortune to live a street life so he could know what people were going through. He built his own Batcave in an abandoned part of the subway. And he created Batman out of whole cloth to fight crime and a corrupt police force."

I would have loved to see this vision of Batman brought to life! It's a very different take on the character than we've ever seen before. Of course, I'm not surprised that WB would pass on it. It was just too much for them to handle at the time. With Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, Batman v Superman, and Suicide Squad, it doesn't sound like that darkness would matter now.

I think it's hilarious that Miller thought Aronofsky's take on the character was too dark, because Miller brought a darkness to Batman that we had never seen before. They've got to at least turn that script into a graphic novel or something!

ROBOT CHICKEN Hilariously Predicted Zack Snyder's 300-Style George Washington Movie

Earlier this week, Zack Snyder revealed that he wants to make a 300-style movie about George Washington and his most pivotal battle in the Revolutionary War. Well, it looks like Robot Chicken predicted that this film would happen back in 2009. I completely forgot about this but was reminded that this hilarious gem exists thanks to /Film. The Robot Chicken sketch is called 1776, and I'd love to watch a feature length version of this!

Zack Snyder Teases The Flash's Appearance in BATMAN V SUPERMAN

I don't know about you, but I've been wondering how exactly The Flash would be introduced in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. We knew he wouldn't have a big role, but director Zack Snyder hopes the way they introduce him will get fans talking.

For those of you who don't want to know how the Scarlet Speedster makes his entrance, then I suggest you don't read the following information (which comes from EW):

Fans will have to debate whether it was really a dream, or maybe the kinetic hero breaking through time-space to deliver a warning. Snyder calls this “a giant Easter egg” that he hopes will spawn plenty of online theories. “We had such a straightforward narrative, on one hand, I wanted this other layer of the movie to be complicated and bizarre,” he says.

This dream he's talking about is something we've seen glimpses of in the trailers for the film, in which Batman is fighting a bunch of Superman followers in a post-apocalyptic world. He is also captured and unmasked by Superman. Ezra Miller, who plays The Flash in the film, previously talked about his appearance in the movie and what he said mirrors Snyder's statements:

"I’m not really at the liberty to talk about The Flash right now, but it’s something that you’ll be seeing in the future in our films. You do get a glimpse of him, of course, in Batman v Superman. He will have a thinner silhouette and will not be as strong as the other heroes of the Justice League."

We'll just have to wait to see for ourselves how exactly The Flash will be introduced in the movie, but he's obviously not going to really play a huge part in this story. I guess we'll just have to wait until Justice League before we see the character fully realized. To get a glimpse of The Flash's costume in the movie, click here.

Gene Roddenberry's Son Rod Signs On As Executive Producer For New STAR TREK Series

0

The stars really are aligning for what looked like an initially doomed new Star Trek series. Fans who were maddened by the fact the series would be streaming exclusive to a CBS service were somewhat quieted when it was announced Bryan Fuller would be directing the series. Now the son of Trek's creator has joined the team!

Entertainment Weekly says Rod Roddenberry will be joining the new Star Trek show as a co-executive producer to insure the show remains within the realm of his father Gene's vision. He released a statement discussing his taking of the job:

“Moral dilemmas, human issues, complex characters, and a genuine sense of optimism: These are the cornerstones of Star Trek and are what have made it such an influential and beloved franchise for the last 50 years...While I will always be humbled by its legacy and the legions of fans who are its guardians, it’s a genuine honor to be joining a team of imaginative and incredibly capable individuals whose endeavor it is to uphold the tenets of Star Trek’s legacy while bringing it to audiences in a new era and on a contemporary platform.”

While I'm no longer concerned this show is being kept off television for fear it will suck, I'm now wondering why CBS would sink so much talent into a new streaming service! I get you want to launch a streaming service, but seriously, why does a nationally free network want a paid subscription model? People will watch this show in large numbers if you run it on primetime! WAKE UP, CBS!

I'm sure I'll check it out either way, but I worry low subscription rates and piracy will bring an early end to what could be a pretty good series!

Hooray? The Earth is Making a Miniature Death Star

0

That moment when you realize your planet has become The Empire. Telegraph is reporting that as of now, the world is manufacturing a miniature Death Star to offer us protection. Its primary function will not be to destroy other planets (so they say), but rather small asteroids that could pose a threat to our planet!

Basically the final product — which is called a De-Star (Directed Energy System for Targeting of Asteroids and exploRation) — will be a decent-sized unmanned ship fitted with a 10 kW laser (which isn't even the most powerful laser we have) that will be able to vaporize meteorites heading towards our beloved planet.

You know, I always wondered how the people under the control of the Empire were able to be so submissive, but now that I'm living it I'm realizing the struggle! Let's just hope there isn't any intelligent life for us to decimate!

Christian Bale Feels His Performance as Batman Was "Lacking"

0
0

Christian Bale is less than satisfied with his performance in the Batman trilogy, according to an interview he gave to Yahoo. While many (myself included) would say he's given one of the best Batman performances we've seen on screen, Bale said he feels "disappointed" and that he has "unfinished business" with the role. He said he wasn't as aware of the fact until he and Heath Ledger worked together on The Dark Knight and realized how much more Heath brought to the table than he did.

He's very self-deprecating during the whole interview, and it's really odd. I thought he did great! Hell he immortalized the "Batman voice"!
