Supercut: The Road to Marvel's CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR is Paved With Good Intentions

I'm very worried about Captain America: Civil War. I trust the Russos after The Winter Soldier, but in the wake of Avengers: Age of Ultron crumbling under too much narrative weight, I'm worried that something similar will happen here — and the fact that there are so many characters to juggle in this film isn't helping. Still, hopefully Marvel Studios can rely more on the history that they've built with these characters so far in the movies and not get too bogged down with the storytelling.

That history is at the center of MCU Exchange's "The Road to Civil War" video, which recaps the path these characters have taken that brings them to the new movie. It's a solid reminder of the through lines that have been present from the very beginning, and a nice palette cleanser after Ultron before we head into the next big adventure for these heroes.

Alan Tudyk and Danny Pudi Join DC Comics' Office Comedy POWERLESS

Just yesterday, we learned that Vanessa Hudgens would be playing one of the lead roles in NBC's new comedy Powerless, which is set in the DC Comics universe. Now Deadline brings word that three more actors have joined the ensemble: Firefly alum Alan Tudyk, Community's Danny Pudi, and A to Z's Christina Kirk.

For those who haven't heard, the show is set at one of the worst insurance companies in America as its regular employees deal with the fallout of damage wreaked by superheroes and villains. Hudgens is playing Emily Locke, a claims adjuster who enjoys her job helping people but becomes frustrated at "the disruptive antics" of the heroes in her city. As for the new additions to the cast, here's the breakdown of who they'll be playing:

Pudi plays Teddy, Emily’s best friend at work and her trusted confidante. He spends his days creating time-wasting pranks as a way to make their office the “least Super place on earth,” just a little less “unsuper.” Tudyk is Del, Emily’s new boss in the claims department. Del has just been promoted — not through any merit of his own, but because he’s the owner’s son. A self-proclaimed “rich, over-educated globetrotting wastrel,” Del is a power-mad disastrous dictator of a boss. Kirk is Jackie, a fan of Super Heroes who has plastered her office cubicle with beefcake shots of super guys. New claims department boss Del makes her his personal assistant, and she begins buckling under his unreasonable and impossible demands.

Pudi, of course, already played a non-superpowered human in a Marvel movie when he showed up briefly in Captain America: The Winter Soldier:

I think this show has a lot of potential, and filling the cast with likable actors is definitely a step in the right direction. Ben Queen is the creator and showrunner, and Michael Patrick Jann is going to executive produce the show and direct the pilot. We'll keep you posted about whether or not NBC ends up liking the pilot and decides to pick up the show for a full season.

Check Out These GAME OF THRONES Storyboards Depicting Drogon's Big Attack

(Spoilers for season 5 ahead.)

I wasn't thrilled with the most recent of Game of Thrones, but one of the coolest moments took place near the end of the season when Dany was saved by her largest dragon, Drogon, in the fighting pits of Meereen. When she gets on Drogon's back and flies away, the green screen compositing looked a little dodgy, but everything before that looked awesome, and now storyboard artist Adrien Van Viersen has shared the full storyboard art for that entire scene. You'll have to head to his site to see the full scene, but I highly recommend doing that, because it gives the sensation of replaying the scene over again in your mind with some added action for good measure. I'll drop a couple of images below to whet your appetites.

Comic: A Marvel Fan and a DC Fan Face Off, With Surprising Results

Dorkly is back with a new comic centering on the ever-churning rivalry between DC and Marvel comics. It brings up point many people have been making for years: there's no reason for your fandom to be limited so staunchly to one company or the other. It's OK to like things from both sides! As long as you don't wrap your entire identity around the idea of loving and supporting one and bashing the other, it should be very easy for reasonable people to acknowledge the positives and negatives of both.

DAREDEVIL Showrunner Steven S. DeKnight Set to Direct PACIFIC RIM 2

Legendary Pictures is still moving forward with Pacific Rim 2, but Guillermo del Toro is not longer attached to direct it. Instead, Del Toro will produce it and he and the studio have hired Daredevil showrunner Steven S. DeKnight to direct the film.

Pacific Rim 2 will be DeKnight's first effort in directing a feature film. Prior to this, he created the Starz series Spartacus and also wrote, directed, and produced TV shows such as Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel, Dollhouse, and Smallville. The script for the sequel was written by Jon Spaihts, who worked on films such as Prometheus and Doctor Strange

DeKnight has a solid track record of TV work and he's definitely got the geek cred from the previous projects he has worked on. It great that he's finally able to make the leap from TV to film and I think he'll do a fine job taking on the reigns of Pacific Rim 2. I'm excited to see what he ends up doing with it.

It's kind of a surprise that Del Toro is handing it off to another director. It makes me wonder what else the filmmaker has cooking that he hasen't announced yet.

PAC-MAN Gets a Live-Action Gritty Reboot Inspired by THE WARRIORS

The classic arcade game Pac-Man has been turned into a great live-action short film called "Pac-Man: Come out to Play," which was inspired by the classic 1979 gang film The Warriors. It was created by a team of filmmakers that call themselves Fury Fingers, and what they’ve developed here is really well made and a lot of fun.

Filming took place in the city of Adelaide (Australia) across 5 late nights. The piece was made for next to no money and shot guerrilla style.

The story is set during a dark night in a big city and follows Pac-Man as he is trying to outrun and fight a group of gang members who call themselves “The Ghosts.”

BATMAN V SUPERMAN Will Have an R-Rated Ultimate Edition

It's no secret that fans have wanted to see an R-rated live-action Batman film after all these years. I just didn't think it would ever happen. But it looks like it's actually coming! According to Stitch Kingdom, director Zack Snyder has plans to cut together an R-rated version of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice on Blu-ray/DVD!

It's being called the "Ultimate Edition," and according to the intel the site received, the movie will be rated R for "sequences of violence." I imagine we'll get to see the completely brutal version of Batman that we've always wanted to see.

This isn't the first time Warner Bros. has done this. They also released an R-rated version of Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: The Battle of The Five Armies. Also, since the film has already completed shooting, the plan for this version of the film was most likely in play before the success of Deadpool

There are no other details, but we'll fill you in on them as they become available.

Just because the Deadpool movie is ineligible to compete in the Oscars this year doesn't mean he won't be trying to get in on the action! Ryan Reynolds posted a message encouraging a write-in vote for the movie for the Academy Awards. He says:

"Only a few hours left for Oscar voting. Too late for a write-in campaign for an ineligible movie?"

The nominations that they've put on the mock poster above are pretty damn funny. The Oscars are set to air this Sunday night at 5:30 pm. I freakin' love the marketing campaign for this film! I love that they are still having fun with it even though the movie has already been out in theaters for a couple of weeks.

XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS Reboot Will Have a New Cast, New Costumes, and a Serialized Story

$

Last year we reported that NBC was planning to reboot Xena: Warrior Princess, and they hired former Lost writer Javier Grillo-Marxuach to write and executive produce the series.

There haven’t really been any details about the project, but in a recent interview with io9, Grillo-Marxuach opened up about what we can expect to see. He revealed that the new TV reboot will reexamine parts of the mythos, characters, and world of Xena, and change things up to fit a serialized storyline.

When Grillo-Marxuach was asked what he was looking forward to playing around with in the new series most, he replied:

“I’m really looking forward to remixing the canon a little bit. One big thing is that we are telling a much more serialized story than the show ever tackled—so formally we are already treading some very different ground—and while the characters will occupy roughly the same thematic spaces they did in the original, some of their backstories will be changed, and some of their morality will be tweaked so that we can tell a long-arcing story in which every episode leads directly into the next. It’s a delicate balancing act: You want to please the fans of the old and attract a new audience, who maybe only know the name of the show, with a story that will draw them in, regardless of their frame of reference—and one of the things I really insisted on in my pitch was telling an epic story that would be bingeable—but still feature several of the legacy characters in a way that makes sense to the totality of the story. So in answer to your question, that’s the one thing I REALLY wanted to mess with.”

I imagine some of the fans of Xena might take issue with tinkering around with some of these legacy characters and changing things up. I’m more curious about what they will change up than anything. For those of you who might have problems with them messing around with some things, Grillo-Marxuach had some things to say to calm your nerves:

“Still, it’s interesting because the communications I get from the fans make it sound like we are going to throw everything out and make it into the Jem and the Holograms version of Xena. People have been asking me if it’s going to be set in the modern day (if that were the case, I wouldn’t have signed on or come near the thing) and whether or not Xena is going to have a Chakram (to which I always reply “Of course she’s gonna have a Chakram, what am I, a monster?”). As you mentioned, a great deal of the appeal of the show lies in certain pulpy elements—like Gabrielle’s bare midriff, Xena’s leather miniskirt, Callisto’s amazing and gravity-defying... well, you get it—and it’s hard for me in the post-Brienne of Tarth era to reconcile with the idea that Xena and her friends can meet every challenge in such skimpy outfits. I think we are going to have some very lengthy discussions about how to bring those elements into the present day without missing the boat on what makes Xena exactly what she is; and how to have our cake and eat it too. There are a few things that are sacrosanct: the Chakram and the quarterstaff, of course, Gabrielle’s ambition to become a bard, and—most importantly—that Xena and Gabrielle be soul mates. Like I said, I’m not monster.”

I think one of the most important elements of the original series was the relationship between Xena and Gabrielle, and it sounds like that will stay intact. As for the characters in the series and if Lucy Lawless and Renee O’Connor will be back to reprise their roles, the answer is no, which kinda sucks, but here’s his explanation:

“The obvious answer is that Lucy Lawless and Renee O’Connor are not going to be Xena and Gabrielle. That already has a lot of people in an uproar. The question of reboot vs. revival is a very relevant now that The X-Files has been revived with the original cast, and so has Star Wars… and because the die hard fans want to see their beloved actors in the role. And look, I love these actors in these roles as much as I love Shatner as Kirk, Connery as Bond, and Lynda Carter as Diana Prince—so why does this need to be a reboot and not a continuation? The answer for me is that the reboot is not a repudiation of the classic show, but rather a compliment to it. I want for Xena to be a cultural icon for longer than my tenure in the entertainment industry, or that of anyone else involved with the project. If, in some far future, people assume that Xena is a character from the greek mythological pantheon alongside Hercules, and that’s why so many people have played her over so many years? That right there would be success.”

I get what he’s saying, but still, I’d much rather see a revival of the series with the original actors instead of a reboot. Hopefully the creative team will find a place for the actresses in the series even if they aren’t going to reprise their roles. I wonder who will end up in these two lead roles in the reboot. Do you have anyone else in mind that you'd want to see play Xena?

One thing is for sure, Grillo-Marxuach knows exactly what he wants to do with the series. It will be interesting to see how it turns out and what fans will think of it. Lawless previously talked about her thoughts on the reboot and her potential return, which you can read here.

THE RING VS THE GRUDGE Japanese Teaser Trailer

This is the movie we've all been waiting for! Japanese production company Kadokawa has released the first teaser trailer for The Ring vs. The Grudge, a.k.a Sadako Vs. Kayako. That's right, the two classic Japanese horror franchises featuring creepy grey ghost children, Sadako and Kayako, will be facing off with each other.

In case you need a refresher, Sadako from The Ring was murdered and thrown down a well. She started killing people through a haunted videotape. Kayako from Ju-On/The Grudge was also murdered as a child and is a vengeful spirit that crawls around ceilings and rattles at people in the house where she resides.

The Ring Vs. The Grudge movie was actually inspired by a fan-made mashup trailer that was released online last year. The studio thought it was such a good idea that they decided to actually go ahead and turn into a film.

The movie is being directed by Kōji Shiraishi, and it will star Mizuki Yamamoto (Ghost Hunt) in the lead role as Yūri. Sadako Vs. Kayako is out in Japan in June next year.

I know I shouldn't be rooting for robots...but damn, I was hoping he leveled that guy. Check it out below, and check out the brutal onslaught at 1:30.

DUNGEONS & DRAGONS Movie Will Be Like GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Set in Middle Earth

$

Warner Bros. has been slowly trying to develop a Dungeons & Dragons movie since they landed the rights to the property in 2013. They finally started to get rolling on it last year when WB executive Greg Silverman said:

“We are so excited about bringing the world of Dungeons & Dragons to life on the big screen. This is far and away the most well-known brand in fantasy, which is the genre that drives the most passionate film followings. D&D has endless creative possibilities, giving our filmmakers immense opportunities to delight and thrill both fans and moviegoers new to the property.”

Producer Roy Lee recently did an interview with Collider in which he gives us an idea of what they are planning. He says they are going to draw inspiration from Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy and the Middle Earth world of J.R.R. Tolkien:

“This new Dungeons & Dragons will be a Guardians of the Galaxy-tone movie in a Tolkien-like universe. Because when you think of all the Hobbit movies and The Lord of the Rings, they have an earnestness to them, and to see something fun, a Raiders romp inside that world, I feel is something the audience has not seen before.”

I can get behind that concept. It could make for a very fun film, but they’ve gotta have a smart script and director to be able to effectively pull it off. Mixing fantasy and comedy isn’t necessarily an easy thing to pull off — just look at the movie Your Highness. The current script they have for the film was written by David Leslie Johnson (Orphan), and from the sound of it, the studio likes what they see. Lee continues:

“I think it will really be moving forward quickly, and I don’t anticipate it not getting greenlit this year, mostly because Warner Bros. has DC now, and LEGO, and the Harry Potter universe that’s being cultivated as their franchises. I believe they see Dungeons & Dragons as something that could be cultivated as a multi-universe movie where there will be spinoffs from the first movie being in Forgotten Realms and subsequent movies being in different worlds.”

For those of you not familiar with Forgotten Realms, it is what D&D players refer to as a “campaign setting,” a world in the Dungeons & Dragons multiverse in which a player group’s adventures can take place. Forgotten Realms is a Middle Earth-type world, and others include a steampunk-inspired world called Eberron and the dystopian, post-apocalyptic desert world of Dark Sun.

Lee goes on to talk about how faithful the film will be to the game explaining:

“Everyone who’s involved with it now, especially the writer of the first draft is a fan from the very beginning starting with Chainmail, which turned into Dungeons & Dragons, so you’ll see things that are very faithful to the source material as well as new elements are being incorporated with help from Wizards of the Coast, who are giving a lot of input on the script.”

I’ve never played Dungeons & Dragons, but I am familiar with it, and I love fantasy films, so this has the potential to be something special and an incredibly entertaining movie. I can’t wait to see how it turns out.

THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF FIVE ARMIES Rated R Scenes Cut From the Movie

With the recent news that Batman v Superman would be getting an "R-rated Director's Cut," here's an example of another PG-13 movie that tried to edge it up. These scenes were deemed too violent for The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies to get a PG-13 rating, but were added to the extended Blu-ray edition. The music of MaxeBaumannFilms2013 kind of takes away from some of the intense gore, but it also highlights how ridiculous some of it is as well!

Could you imagine seeing stuff like this in Batman v Superman?

CANDYMAN's Tony Todd Reportedly Wanted for the New STAR TREK Series

Tony Todd is a veteran character actor and voice actor who has had an incredible career with roles in a ton of different films and TV series. According to the actor, via an interview with TrekCore, he's on a short list of actors wanted to join Bryan Fuller's upcoming Star Trek series that is coming to CBS All Access.

Todd currently provided the voice of Zoom in The Flash, and he has also been involved with projects such as Young Justice, Transformers Prime, Chuck, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, 24, Candyman, Platoon, and more.

This also wouldn't be the first Star Trek project he has been involved with. He's appeared in The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and a few Star Trek video game projects. He seems like he would be a solid fit for the series if he ends up getting the job. The actor explains:

"It’s a year away. They’re not even going to get official cast until, probably, the fourth quarter of the year. And my only concern about it is that it’s going to be that [CBS All Access] online thing; I don’t understand that part."
"I’ve never done a series regular — I’ve always avoided it because I like playing different characters — but this is one year that we’re looking at some stuff, so I’m sure that we’re going to be popping up and everybody’s going to move on on sometime very soon."

So he doesn't understand that whole All Access thing either! I think CBS needs to ditch that whole All Access plan otherwise no one is going to watch the damn show. We'll keep you updated on this project as it develops.

Here's a trick that's handy for people who want to listen to concerts or stand up specials on Netflix, but are not exactly in a position to watch it! Business Insider says this trick is super handy for people who want to binge watch while driving, or even at work without getting in trouble! Just do the following...

  • Pull up your Netflix app
  • Pick the show you want to watch and begin watching
  • Lock your phone
  • Sound will stop...
  • Now slide up your quick options from your home screen
  • You should be able to hit play on your Netflix show without the screen!

Like I said before, this would be super handy for someone like me who loves listening to stand up comedy, but is not about to do it in front of their television! Anyone tried this before?
