Bryan Fuller Wanted Angela Bassett as Starfleet Captain

With the news earlier this week that Bryan Fuller (Hannibal, Pushing Daisies) would be the show runner of the new streaming based Star Trek series came more speculation than you can shake a stick at. The latest: Blavity is reporting is that the director at one point expressed interest in a Starfleet crew commanded by none other than Angela Bassett. The quote comes from an interview with DenofGeek in 2013...

I want Angela Bassett to be the captain, that’s who I would love to have, you know Captain Angela Bassett and First Officer Rosario Dawson. I would love to do that version of the show and but that’s in the future to be told.

Bassett, fresh off her role on American Horror Story, is presumably available. We'll have to wait and see if she's up for the role!

I just got my laugh for the day watching this old Fox ad for Star Trek TNG. In the video you'll hear a C- performance of the most cleverly written and nostalgically hilarious parody of Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start The Fire," My only real complaint was a lack of Worf and Geordi!

Other than that, this is early '90s television at it's best/worst. Thanks for the laugh Pianoluvr2006!

Kevin Smith and HEROES Star Greg Grunberg Getting A Talk Show On AMC

Deadline reports that Kevin Smith is getting yet another chance to fly on AMC. First he had Comic Book Men, and now the director is teaming up with Heroes' Matt Parkman, aka actor Greg Grunberg, for a 30 minute late night geek talk show. Geeking Out is pitched to be looking at things through a "fanboy" lens and is set to debut at this year's SDCC.

After its initial episode, the show is set for eight more episodes once a week throughout the rest of the summer. I'm sure it'll be alright, but is it going to be sustainable? We already get a lot of Kevin Smith on several other platforms. I'm curious to see if he's up to the challenge.

Bad Lip Reading Returns With New STAR WARS Parody Music Video "Not The Future"

It wasn't too long ago that Bad Lip Reading unleashed "Bushes of Love," a Star Wars parody song that got stuck in my head for days on end. Now they're back with a brand new extended lyric music video for "Not The Future," a song that uses the same techniques but a bunch of different footage to tell its story. It's not quite as ridiculous as their previous song, but it's entertaining enough on its own to be worth sharing.

First Trailer For Cameron Crowe and J.J. Abrams' Showtime Series ROADIES

Showtime has unveiled the first trailer for its new music series Roadies, the first TV show written, created, directed, and executive produced by Cameron Crowe (Almost Famous, Fast Times at Ridgemont High). Here's the official description:

Roadies gives an insider’s look at the reckless, romantic, funny and often poignant lives of a committed group of “roadies” who live for music and the de facto family they’ve formed along the way. The series chronicles the rock world through the eyes of music’s unsung heroes and pays homage to the backstage workers who put the show on the road while touring the United States for the successful arena-level group, The Staton-House Band.

Luke Wilson, Carla Gugino, Imogen Poots (The Look of Love), Rafe Spall (One Day), Academy Award® nominee Keisha Castle-Hughes (Whale Rider), Peter Cambor (NCIS: Los Angeles), Colson Baker a.k.a. Machine Gun Kelly (Beyond the Lights) and Ron White (Blue Collar Comedy Tour) star in the ensemble cast. Luis Guzman (Boogie Nights), Jacqueline Byers (The Strain), Finesse Mitchell (Saturday Night Live), Branscombe Richmond (Forgetting Sarah Marshall) and Tanc Sade (Matador, Gilmore Girls) guest star. J.J. Abrams is executive producing alongside Crowe and writer Winnie Holzman (My So-Called Life, Wicked).

I'm glad to see Crowe getting back to what he loves — music — after Aloha, and this looks like such a cool series that I might actually have to subscribe to Showtime to check it out. The music sounds great, too — that's Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder performing "Hard Sun" in the background.

Roadies premieres Sunday, June 26th, at 10pm.

Here is the final installment of our Hayao Miyazaki film food editorial series. This one centers on the food in the classic animated film Ponyo. To read the previous four articles that we've posted, you can check them out here.

Miyazaki's movies are widely known for their warm colors, cute pets, brave characters, attractive storylines, and incredible attention to detail. But one of the most significant parts of any Miyazaki film is actually the food. Miyazaki uses food in specific ways to bring characters together, build their relationships, and add depth to the story.

The food in Ponyo serves two purposes: comfort and connection.

In the first food scene in the movie, Sosuke shares his sandwich with Ponyo. This simple action connects her to him, and makes her want to be human. This is supported by Ponyo’s refusal to eat when she is back with her father — she is refusing that connection. She does not want to be with her family, she wants to be with Sosuke.

hayao-miyazaki-film-food-part-five-ponyo1 hayao-miyazaki-film-food-part-five-ponyo2

Comfort food is seen shortly after this first sandwich scene, on the drive home from school, after Sosuke has lost Ponyo. Sosuke has turned to ice cream, as many of us do, to help numb the pain of his loss.

hayao-miyazaki-film-food-part-five-ponyo4

We see that Lisa is also one to indulge in comfort food when, after hearing that her husband wouldn’t be returning from sea that night, she wants to abandon the beautiful dinner she had been preparing, in favor of getting fast food. She ultimately doesn’t, but I definitely understand that sentiment.

hayao-miyazaki-film-food-part-five-ponyo6 hayao-miyazaki-film-food-part-five-ponyo7

At this point in the film, the food seems to serve the purpose of both connecting and comforting. Ponyo is now with Sosuke in human form and this is her first opportunity to actually talk to Sosuke. At the same time, there is a massive storm happening, the power is out, and Lisa needs to keep these young children calm. What better way is there to do that than with tea and ramen?

hayao-miyazaki-film-food-part-five-ponyo8 hayao-miyazaki-film-food-part-five-ponyo9

The remainder of food in the movie is used to help other people in the town. Lisa packs provisions before she sets out to help the old ladies at the senior center during the storm. The following day, Sosuke and Ponyo pack up similar food before they head out in search of Lisa. They end up giving this food to a mother and her baby, which is yet another connection — the mother has to eat the sandwiches so that she can feed her child.

hayao-miyazaki-film-food-part-five-ponyo10 hayao-miyazaki-film-food-part-five-ponyo11

While there isn’t as much food in Ponyo as there is in some of the other Miyazaki films we covered, it all serves a purpose. As we’ve seen throughout this article, food can serve many roles — in film and in life — and Miyazaki displays this masterfully in his works.

Donnie Yen Replaces Jet Li in XXX: THE RETURN OF XANDER CAGE; Read Film's Official Synopsis

Yesterday, Paramount Pictures announced that the studio would be distributing Vin Diesel's upcoming sequel xXx: The Return of Xander Cage. They also revealed the first official synopsis for the film, which you can read below:

The third explosive chapter of the blockbuster franchise that redefined the spy thriller finds extreme athlete turned government operative Xander Cage (Vin Diesel) coming out of self-imposed exile and on a collision course with deadly alpha warrior Xiang and his team in a race to recover a sinister and seemingly unstoppable weapon known as Pandora’s Box. Recruiting an all-new group of thrill-seeking cohorts, Xander finds himself enmeshed in a deadly conspiracy that points to collusion at the highest levels of world governments. Packed with the series’ signature deadpan wit and bad-ass attitude, “xXx: THE RETURN OF XANDER CAGE” will raise the bar on extreme action with some of the most mind-blowing stunts to ever be caught on film.

Diesel himself also had some news yesterday. He shared the following photo on Facebook:

Director, Xiang and Xander...Donnie Yen's first day on set.Our global cast is simply amazing!

Posted by Vin Diesel on Thursday, February 11, 2016

Apparently Jet Li abruptly dropped out of the film for mysterious reasons, but the production managed to quickly replace him in the Xiang role with Donnie Yen, who is battling Mike Tyson in Ip Man 3 and fighting space battles in the upcoming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Li was supposed to face off against fellow martial artist/actor Tony Jaa in the movie, but now we'll get to see a Jaa vs. Yen fight, which frankly sounds more exciting to me.

xXx: The Return of Xander Cage doesn't have an official release date yet, but we'll keep you posted as soon as we hear about one. In the meantime, you can head to Diesel's Facebook page for more behind-the-scenes photos and videos, including one in which he talks about taking longboarding "to the next level."

THE DARKNESS Trailer: Kevin Bacon's Family is Haunted by Native American Ghosts

Sadly, The Darkness isn't a biopic about the British rock band of the same name (although seeing Kevin Bacon in the lead role of that film would be pretty awesome). Instead, it's a new supernatural horror film from Wolf Creek director Greg McLean. The cast includes Bacon, Radha Mitchell, David Mazouz, Lucy Fry, Matt Walsh, and Jennifer Morrison, and it looks like a typical "young kid messes with forces beyond his understanding and unwittingly causes death and destruction" kind of movie. Check out the synopsis below:

From the director of the cult classic, WOLF CREEK, Greg McLean, comes the supernatural thriller THE DARKNESS, opening nationwide May 13th, 2016. As a family returns home from vacation at the Grand Canyon, they innocently bring home a supernatural force that preys off their own fears and vulnerabilities, threatening to destroy them from within, while consuming their lives with terrifying consequences.

McLean also directed James Gunn's The Belco Experiment, and I wouldn't be surprised to see a trailer for that pop up soon also. The Darkness hits theaters on May 13th. Let us know what you think in the comments below.

At this point, I'm going to assume that all of you have seen Star Wars: The Force Awakens, so I'll let the spoilers fly from here on out.

Adam Driver's moody, unpredictable villain Kylo Ren became a big breakout character in the latest Star Wars film, and fans aren't content with just waiting around until December of 2017 to get more of him. So over on Tumblr, Mamalaz created this hilarious series of gifs that imagine the teenage life of Kylo Ren interacting with his parents, Han and Leia. Some of these made me actually laugh out loud, and I think you'll get a kick out of them.

Red-Band Trailer For Melissa McCarthy's New Comedy THE BOSS

I know a lot of you skipped Paul Feig's Melissa McCarthy-led film Spy, and frankly, based on her previous movies, I don't really blame you. But that movie turned out to be one of the best action comedies I've ever seen, and I can't encourage you all enough to seek it out and see what a really funny McCarthy movie looks like.

Unfortunately, her new film The Boss does not look like a good follow-up. In it, she plays Michelle Darnell, "a titan of industry who is sent to prison after she’s caught for insider trading.  When she emerges ready to rebrand herself as America’s latest sweetheart, not everyone she screwed over is so quick to forgive and forget." Kristen Bell, Peter Dinklage, and Kathy Bates co-star, and the movie opens in theaters on April 8th. Check out the red-band trailer below:

Watch: Early Tease For GAME OF THRONES Season 6; Teaser Trailer Debuting Sunday

I just finished reading all of the available books in George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series, just in time for HBO's unveiling of all of those new Game of Thrones season 6 photos online. The only problem, of course, is that now the show is going to be treading into unfamiliar territory, as the new season will surpass a lot of where Martin left off with his characters in A Dance With Dragons. That could go a couple of different ways, and it'll be interesting to see if the relative freedom showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss have moving forward will change the feeling of the show at all, or if they feel more comfortable relying on Martin's source material.

I'm curious to see how it progresses, and now HBO has announced that a trailer for season 6 will debut this Sunday, February 14th, and they've given us a brief look at the House of Black and White to whet our appetites:

I'd be surprised if the teaser revealed very much at all, especially considering how much of the new season will involve story points book readers aren't familiar with. There are still a few storylines that haven't overlapped in the show, though, so I'm betting we'll see a lot of Maisie Williams' Arya and Isaac Hempstead-Wright as Bran, who both have some stuff to do that readers know about before we venture completely past book territory altogether. Stay tuned for the teaser, which will debut right before the 9:00pm premiere of Vinyl and which we'll almost certainly post on the site after it goes up.

The season 6 premiere of Game of Thrones comes to HBO on April 24th.

It's gotta be tough being Yoshi. You're being ridden around all day, asked to eat things and crap out eggs at a moment's notice, and you don't get the respect you deserve.

But a new video from Dorkly imagines a scenario in which Yoshi switches places with Mario, and after a day in his shoes (and only his shoes), it looks like the plumber won't make the mistake of under-appreciating his dinosaur companion again.

Welcome to Reviewers Assemble: The show where we look at movies from four different points of view. We have the Artist: Shiloh, our actress and artist with two performing art degrees, eight years of professional training, who's been in the business for over 22 years as a performer, director, and writer. She'll give us insight into the performances, art direction, music, and cinematography. The Average Joe: Eddy is a hard working guy who likes to unwind at the movies when he can. He's gonna let you know if a movie is worth his and your precious time. The Critic: Tony has been a professional critic for over 30 years — one of the first movies he reviewed was Star Wars: A New Hope. He has an appreciation for all cinema. The Geek: Drewbles is a genuine geek, ready to shower a movie with unconditional love or illogical hate. All of them are wrangled by our host and moderator Jeff: he doesn't review, but he does ask great questions that help each reviewer consider elements even they might not have thought of.

Today we review Kung Fu Panda 3. Did they complete the trilogy well? We tell you how we feel about the new characters, music, and if it's worth taking your family to see.

If you’re a fan of cosplay and actress Felicia Day, today is your lucky day! We have a video for you to watch that features Day modeling some badass 3D printed armor created by 3D printing master Melissa Ng of Lumecluster. She spent 200 hours designing the armor for Day and the video shows us some of the process that she went through creating it with the help of Shapeways.

The armor is called the "Dreamer Regalia" and it’s “designed partly from Guild Wars 2 armor, partly from Codex’s armor, and partly from an idea of an elven dream goddess.” The end result is pretty spectacular. You can see even more photos on Geek & Sundry.

Watch Betty White Give a Brief, Funny DEADPOOL Review

“Once in a generation, a movie comes along that your whole family will love… if your family is a *****-up group of ****-kissing inbreds.”

I finally had the opportunity to see Deadpool on Thursday and it was absolutely amazing! It is seriously one of the best big screen adaptations of a comic book character that has been made. It stayed completely true to the character and it was an incredibly fun movie-going experience.

Actress Betty White has a few things to say about the movie as well in a video that she posted on Twitter. She says it was “glorious,” gave it four “Golden Girls,” and says that it was one of the best movies of the year. If Betty White can’t sell you on seeing this movie, I don’t know who can.

Resourceful Kids Created Their Own Awesome POKEMON Card Game Because They Were Poor

kids-created-their-own-awesome-pokemon-card-game-because-they-were-poor

When you grow up not having a lot of money, your imagination is the key to having fun. My parents couldn’t afford to buy me stuff I wanted when I was a kid, so I spent a lot of my time drawing pictures and spending time at the local comic book store reading comics.

Reddit user one23abc explained that he and his brother wanted to desperately play popular card games like Yu-Gi-Oh! or Pokémon, but they couldn’t afford it. So what did they do? They created their own card game from scratch, and it’s awesome!

Some photos of the game were shared online that you can see below. The game was simply called “Creature Cards” and they were made over a decade ago. As you will see, each card features imaginative characters that include a description of the strengths. One23abc went on to explain the rules of the game:

“There are 3 types of card: creature, evolution and item. At the start of the game you start with 3 creatures, 1 evolution and 1 item. Play is divided into player turns. You can think of each turn as having five of phases; draw, item, summon, attack (or evolve), then end. Most items can only be played during the 'item' phase. However some items can be played on your opponents turn under certain conditions (think of them as 'trap' cards from yugioh)
“If you do not have enough MP to attack, you have to 'struggle' (roll a die). 1 or 6 = 20 damage 2 or 5 = 10 damage 3 = 10 damage to yourself 4 = reroll
“If your creature has an evolution, you may chose to evolve instead of attack. A creature has to attack at least one time before it may evolve to the next stage (creatures typically come in 1 stagers, 2 stagers, or 3 stagers, with the latter being the least common but most powerful in a deck)”

I love that they just let their imaginations run wild when creating this thing. I don’t think kids do this kind of stuff anymore.

4 New Posters and Promo For Pixar’s FINDING DORY

4-new-posters-and-promo-for-pixars-finding-dory

Disney has unveiled four new posters for Pixar’s upcoming animated adventure, Finding Dory, which as you know, is a sequel to Finding Nemo. As you can see, Dory seems a little shy and is trying to hide in the posters. I’ve also included a new promo spot that was recently released.

The story follows Dory as she embarks on a journey to find her mom and dad. This leads her to an ocean sanctuary facility where wounded animals are treated before they are re-released into the wild. It's here that she meets lots of new characters like an octopus who is missing a leg, and a beluga whale named Bailey who thinks he has suffered a head injury because of the big bump on his head that is supposed to be there.

Ellen DeGeneres and Albert Brooks will reprise their roles of Dory and Marlin, and they are joined by a great voice cast that includes Ed O’Neill as an octopus named Hank; Ty Burrell as the beluga whale named Destiny; Kaitlin Olsen as a “kind-hearted whale shark,” and Diane Keaton and Eugene Levy as Dory's parents.

Andrew Stanton is directing the film, and it’s set to be released in theaters on June 17th, 2016.
