Michael Fassbender Compares ASSASSIN'S CREED to THE MATRIX and Talks Practical Effects

0
0

It seems like we are about to enter an age in which movies based on video games aren't going to suck. At least that's what we're all hoping for with films such as Warcraft and Assassin's Creed coming out later this year.

Assassin's Creed is being directed by Justin Kurzel (Macbeth), and the film recently wrapped production. During a recent interview with Empire, Michael Fassbender said that the movie is "old school" and also talked about how it compares to The Matrix:

"I’ve always thought about The Matrix when we’ve approached this. This idea of DNA memory elevates it from a basic fantasy genre [piece], because you have something an audience can actually believe in. Then the journey becomes so much more elevated, because you’re on board in a different way."

The film follows a character named Callum Lynch who, "through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, is able to experience the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day."

This movie has the ability to be epic. This is such a fascinating story and world to play with, and I'm curious to see how they bring it to life on the big screen. I don't know if you saw Macbeth, but Kurzel is a very visual storyteller and there's no doubt the movie is going to look great. There are just so many different elements to the story and I'm interested in seeing how he handles it. Another thing we learn from Fassbender in this interview is that the shooting of the movie relied heavily on practical effects, which is awesome! He explained:

"There’s very little green screen in this, which is highly unusual in these films. We have stunt guys jumping across buildings in (Maltese capital) Valletta."

I'll admit, I was a little worried that they would use a lot of CG effects to pull off some of the crazy stunts that are going to be in this movie, so it's refreshing to hear that won't be the case. We'll get real people jumping from rooftop to rooftop! In case you're wondering about the signature move from the video game, which is called the "leap of faith," where with an eagle cry the assassin character jumps from a tall building, into what is usually a stack of hay... Well, that's in the movie, too, and it's done with stunt people.

"We've got Damian Walters doing a 120-foot leap of faith, without any rope, into a bag. It's pretty incredible to see."

Holy crap! I can't wait to see them actually pull that off! That's incredible. Hopefully we get a behind-the-scenes featurette that focuses on the stunts in this movie because it sounds like they'll be spectacular!

Assassin’s Creed opens in theaters December 21st, and it sounds like there's a good chance it will be a film that fans of the game will enjoy. The movie also stars Marion Cotillard (The Dark Knight Rises, Inception), Michael K. Williams (The Wire), Jeremy Irons (Batman v Superman), and Brendan Gleeson (Edge of Tomorrow).

Captivating and Haunting Horror Short - THE WOODS

0
0

"The Woods" is a must-watch, powerful horror short film that you’ve got to watch. This thing is absolutely captivating, and it instantly grabbed my attention. There’s absolutely no dialogue in the film, and it’s incredibly effective in how that silence is used. This is a slow burn kind of story, which I know not everyone is into, but this is truly a beautifully haunting short. It was directed Remington Smith, and this is the information that he had to offer for it:

The Woods is a dialogue-free horror short that follows a lone woman in a desolate snowscape on a quest to take care of an ailing relative.
Shot in -30 degree weather using only natural light and no digital trickery, The Woods is a horror-meets-arthouse narrative about the lengths we will go to take care of family.

I’m curious to know what you all think about this so after you watch it let us know what you think in the comments below.

Fan Trailer Gives BATMAN V SUPERMAN The CIVIL WAR Treatment

It's a toss up between which superhero battle movie I'm most excited for. Batman v Superman is closer, but Captain America: Civil War definitely has the history that shows more promise. This trailer done by the VGC gives me the best of both worlds. I get the crowd chants from the most recent Civil War Super Bowl spot, and the dark visuals of the DC trailer. Truthfully they go together so naturally that if I hadn't seen the Civil War trailer, I might think it's a new trailer entirely!

Fan Creates Custom Funko POP! for Darth Jar Jar

I tried for as long as I could to stay away from the Funko POP! craze. I went two years before receiving one as a gift, and now I'm up to three since Christmas. Of course, now that I have a couple I want more, especially one that no one else has. This custom creation by Instagram user Tiger_p0pp will do quite nicely!

Of course, we are all well familiar with the Darth Jar Jar fan theory by now, and while I don't necessarily fall into the camp who believes it should be canon, this is pretty cool. Does Funko create characters from fan fiction?! They should make an exception this time.

Ryan Reynolds Says X FORCE Movie to Come at Some Point

It seems we've been talking sequels for Deadpool even prior to its first advance screenings, and Ryan Reynolds is surprisingly giving answers! Collider reports that the star spoke at a German press junket and said:

There’s so much material to mine in just the X-Men universe … In the future, if we’re doing a bunch more Deadpool movies, we’re really going to explore the X-Men a lot. We’ll see. And maybe X-ForceX-Force is my priority. I really want to get that in.

In case you don't know, the X-Force was more or less a more militant X-Men. The height of the series' popularity came in the early '90s with Rob Liefeld, but has since kind of fallen off the charts.

As long as Deadpool continues to remain a Fox property, they'll have to keep plugging away with Deadpool and the X-Men! That's not a bad thing, the X-Force was always a well-received series, with most of its incarnations involving Deadpool, Cable, and Psylocke. With Olivia Munn taking the role of Psylocke in X-Men Apocalypse, it seems all they'd need to move forward is someone to cast Cable!

Super Power Beat Down Releases Awesome Alternate Ending to Spider-Man Vs. Darth Maul

0

Bat In The Sun has long been known for their "what if" series Super Power Beat Down. They've pitted Predator against Wolverine, Batman vs. Darth Vader, and more recently Spider-Man vs. Darth Maul! In the first installment, Spidey gets the better of Maul through the use of symbiote, which for me is a cop out. What if...say when the symbiote splits it goes to both Darth Maul and Spider-Man? Even if he wouldn't win, there's no denying symbiote Maul is far more bad ass than Venom or Spidey!

Well, luckily this alternate theory gives me the ending I want. Frankly, I don't think there's any scenario where Darth Maul loses to Spider-Man. Which version do you think is better? See both and comment below.

First Poster for Netflix’s VOLTRON: LEGENDARY DEFENDER Series

first-poster-for-netflixs-voltron-legendary-defender-series

Last month we learned that Voltron would be making an epic comeback thanks to a series being developed by DreamWorks Animation for Netflix. This got me and a lot of other fans of the classic '80s pumped up to see what they will bring. Well today, we have the first poster for the series giving us a look at the logo and a silhouette of Voltron in the background. It’s pretty damn exciting stuff!

There’s still not much known about the new series, but it’s the first new Voltron series since Nicktoons’ Voltron Force in 2011, which was unfortunately a dud and only lasted one season. All we really know at this point is that the show will follow five teenagers who unite to save the world from evil by kicking ass in their robot lions that combine to form a giant robotic mech warrior with a giant ass sword.

Featuring a mix of action, comedy and an epic storyline spearheaded by yet-to-be-announced veteran animation talent & longtime Voltron fans, the new series will delight audiences old and new.

The series will launch later this year, so stay tuned because I’m sure we’ll be getting some promo trailers here in the near future!

The Conflicted Emotions of Kylo Ren Brought to Life Pixar Style

the-conflicted-emotions-of-kylo-ren-brought-to-life-pixar-style

Kylo Ren is one hell of a conflicted character who is being torn between the dark side and the light side. By the end of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, he showed his dedication to the dark side when he shoved his lightsaber into his dad.

For those of you wondering what exactly is going on in Kylo Ren’s head, artist Dan Hipp created a fun illustration that features emotional characters inspired by Pixar’s Inside Out.

It’s actually a pretty heavy and sad image, especially with Joy represented by his mom and the core memory of him having fun with his dad. This is one of the most interesting pieces of fan art for the character that I’ve seen as it makes you think a little more about what the villain is dealing with in his internal struggle.

Lionsgate Is Reportedly Working on an 8th SAW Movie Called SAW: LEGACY

It looks like Lionsgate still isn't done with the Saw franchise. Remember the last movie in the franchise was called Saw 3D: The Final Chapter? Well, it seems like they were just kidding about the final chapter part. According to The Tracking Board, the studio has hired writers Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger to draft a script for the new film, which will be called Saw: Legacy. These are the writers behind films such as Sorority Row and Piranha 3D.

Director James Wan started the franchise, and I loved the first movie. Everything after that just got progressively worse. Since Saw, Wan has gone on to make some incredible movies that include Insidious, The Conjuring, and Furious 7. He's also set to direct Robotech and Aquaman. The filmmaker is reportedly attached to executive produce Saw: Legacy with the screenwriter of the original movie Leigh Whannell. That doesn't really mean much, though, because they both oversaw the other sequels and it didn't make them any better.

Since the Jigsaw killer is dead, I imagine that this new film will introduce us to a copycat killer that will launch a whole new series of films full of blood, gore, torture, death, mayhem, and carnage. I can't say that I'm excited about this because I imagine it's just going to be a rehash of what we've already seen. What do you think about Lionsgate making an eighth Saw movie?

badass-transforming-dominator-replica-gun-from-cyber-punk-anime-psycho-pass

For those of you who have never seen the cyberpunk crime anime Psycho-Pass, the futuristic cops in the series carry a sidearm called the "Dominator." The gun has been recreated at a one-to-one scale replica, and it's loaded with all kinds of awesomeness! Not only does it transform between the "Paralyzer" and "Eliminator" modes, but it also features 217 RGB LEDs, built-in speakers that play sound effects including 100 quotes from Noriko Hidaka, the actress who voices the gun in the show, it also has a small camera that offers real-time streaming capabilities to a smartphone as well as touch sensors on the grip that enable you to lock the gun.

The replica also comes in a special edition model that has a rosewood grip and a Public Safety Bureau insignia. The standard model will be available for pre-order in Japan on February 18th for roughly $700. If you're interested in the special edition it will cost you $784. For those of us who live outside of Japan, don't worry, the gun will be available for sale for the rest of us sometime this year.

You can see the gun in action in the video below along with some photos.

Intriguing and Intense New Trailer For Tom Hiddleston's HIGH-RISE

0
0

We've got a new trailer to share with you for Tom Hiddleston's upcoming thriller High-Rise. The movie comes from writer and director Ben Wheatley, who is the creator of several awesomely bold films that include Kill List, Sightseers, and A Field in England. I'm a fan of Wheatley's filmmaking style and the intense twistedness he brings to his stories. High-Rise looks like it's going to be a great addition to his resume.

The film is based on the novel of the same name by J.G. Ballard and also stars Sienna Miller, Jeremy Irons, Luke Evans, Elisabeth Moss, James Purefoy, Reece Shearsmith, Peter Ferdinando, and Dan Renton Skinner. Here's the synopsis for the movie:

London, 1975.

A slick apartment tower rises above the Thames, the beginnings of what will soon become the world’s biggest financial hub. Dominating the landscape, it is simply called the HIGH-RISE… its address a mark of exclusivity. Its newest resident is Robert Laing, an ambitious young doctor utterly seduced by the lifestyle and cutting-edge technology the high-rise has to offer.

Laing meets Wilder, a charismatic provocateur who introduces him to the seedy underbelly of the high-rise. The cracks in this apparently flawless society grow rapidly, and Laing is shocked at the depravity he sees. Life in the high-rise quickly descends into madness and violence, and Laing finds himself amongst the marauding hordes of bloodthirsty tenants who take over the building, floor by floor.

A disturbing vision from the director of Kill List, this action-packed thriller depicts society’s most chilling nightmares.

High-Rise will open in the UK on March 18th, and it will be released in U.S. theaters on May 13th. I've included three posters for the film below the trailer.

Lupita Nyong'o in Talks For Ava DuVernay's Sci-Fi Film INTELLIGENT LIFE

0
0

Yesterday, we wrote about how Selma director Ava DuVernay was wanted for two upcoming projects: Disney's adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time, and Amblin's sci-fi film Intelligent Life. THR reports that DuVernay is still circling the project, but now Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong'o is in talks to star.

Intelligent Life is written by Jurassic World and Safety Not Guaranteed writers Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly, and is a reworking of a screenplay they wrote called The Ambassador. The plot centers on a U.N. delegate tasked with being Earth's representative when humanity makes contact with alien life, and then he falls in love with a mysterious woman who turns out to be an alien. Nyong'o is in talks for the alien role, which means she'll be playing two aliens in a row following her work as Maz Kanata in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. (Trevorrow, of course, is directing Episode IX, so there's another SW connection for you.)

DuVernay is supposedly going to receive an official offer to direct within the next 24 hours, but even if she does take the job (which I hope she does, because this sounds like it has a lot of potential), that doesn't mean that she's automatically excluded from taking A Wrinkle in Time as well. Production on the two films doesn't conflict, so she may end up doing both...which might be the best possible outcome here.

Hayao Miyazaki Film Food — Part Two: MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO

0
0

This week we're running a series of articles exploring the food used in the animated film of Hayao Miyazaki. Yesterday we posted an editorial that focused on Spirited Away. Today's article takes an in-depth look at the food in My Neighbor Totoro.

Hayao Miyazaki's movies are widely known for their warm colors, cute pets, brave characters, attractive storyline, and incredible attention to detail. But one of the most significant parts of any Miyazaki film is actually the food. Miyazaki uses food in specific ways to bring characters together, build their relationships, and add depth to the story.

Japan is a highly developed country, but My Neighbor Totoro draws a picture of its beautiful countryside. This is an ordinary story which takes place during an agricultural era of Japan. During that time, Japan did not have modern buildings, busy streets, high technologies, or fancy restaurants. What they had were family, friends, and neighborhoods. In My Neighbor Totoro, Satsuki, Mei, and their father move to a new house in a small village. With their neighbor’s help, they quickly finish moving and get ready for their new life. In Miyazaki's film, food is a traditional way to tell the audiences that they are settled down. In Japan, women usually need to prepare food for the whole family. Satsuki is the older sister, so she cooks food for her family and puts it into bento — a traditional homepacked meal common in Japanese cuisine.

hayao-miyazaki-film-food-part-two-my-neighbor-totoro1 hayao-miyazaki-film-food-part-two-my-neighbor-totoro2

The Japanese culture loves cute stuff, so they decorate their bento with lovely shaped food and beautiful colors. A small fish, rice, green beans, and sour plum — what a perfect way to start your day.

hayao-miyazaki-film-food-part-two-my-neighbor-totoro hayao-miyazaki-film-food-part-two-my-neighbor-totoro4

Of course, Totoros are the absolute main characters in this film. Only pure children can see them. From their round and puffy shape, I can predict that they love to eat. Even when they are running away from Mei, they do not leave their food behind. This is the highest level of food love.

hayao-miyazaki-film-food-part-two-my-neighbor-totoro5

The big Totoro uses a bit of his favorite food to thank Mei and Satsuki. I think this big Totoro really likes them, so he is willing to share his food with his friends.

hayao-miyazaki-film-food-part-two-my-neighbor-totoro6

In hot summertime, imagine that you want to eat some fresh and iced fruits and vegetables, but you do not have a refrigerator. What are you going to do then? The people that live in village are very smart. Because river water is always cold, they put fruits and vegetable into the river. After several minutes, the food cools down and you can eat the fresh food with your friends.

hayao-miyazaki-film-food-part-two-my-neighbor-totoro7 hayao-miyazaki-film-food-part-two-my-neighbor-totoro8 hayao-miyazaki-film-food-part-two-my-neighbor-totoro9

Satsuki’s mother is sick, and because of the long distances between their house and the hospital, Satsuki and Mei cannot go visit their mother very often. They miss her very much, so Mei plucks a corn for her and wishes for her get better soon. In the end of the movie, Totoro sends Satsuki and Mei go to visit their mother by his magic car. Their mother received the corn from them. This is an ordinary story which includes ordinary people and ordinary foods, but there are so many happy emotions from this story. Why does an ordinary story bring so much happiness to the audience? I guess we can only find reasons from our ordinary lives.

Pierce Brosnan Reunites With GOLDENEYE Director For Hemingway Adaptation

0
0

Former James Bond Pierce Brosnan is reteaming with his Goldeneye director Martin Campbell for a film adaptation of an Ernest Hemingway novel. THR reports that the two will reunite for Across The River and Into The Trees, the last novel Hemingway published in his lifetime. I've sadly never read a Hemingway novel (I know, I know), but here's how THR describes the plot:

BAFTA winner Peter Flannery and Oscar-nominated Michael Radford (Il Postino) wrote the script, which tells the story of an American officer serving in Italy right after World War II, facing news of his terminal illness with stoic disregard. Determined to spend his weekend in quiet solitude, he commandeers a military driver to facilitate a simple duck hunting trip and a visit to his old haunts in Venice. As his plans begin to unravel, a chance encounter with a young countess begins to kindle in him the hope of renewal.

Sounds like a nice juicy role for Brosnan to sink his teeth into. I've always found him to be an enjoyable presence on screen, and I feel like he doesn't always get the opportunities he should to be able to prove he has range beyond the suave Bond-esque charms of those films or The Thomas Crown Affair. Campbell has had more hits than misses in his career, resurrecting the Bond franchise twice and directing the Zorro films, but also directing Green Lantern. Here's hoping the two — who are currently working together on an action thriller with Jackie Chan called The Foreigner which made headlines yesterday for scaring Londoners when a bus exploded for the shoot — can work wonders for each other's careers again.

X-MEN: APOCALYPSE's Quicksilver Scene Took a Month and a Half To Film

0
0

We're big fans of Bryan Singer's X-Men: Days of Future Past, and one of the standout sequences of that movie was Evan Peters' Quicksilver scene. Here it is for those who may need a reminder:

Singer and Peters have been talking about how they want to top that scene in the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse, and Singer recently shared a cool piece of trivia about the new movie:

You can have fast or cute. Thank you @20thcenturyfox marketing #marcweinstock #davesingh #elyorias and the team for getting us on #superbowl50 #nfl #fox#football #XMen #xmenapocalypse FYI this scene with #evanpeters as #quicksilver took one and a half months for a less than 3 minute sequence resulting in Evan working longer than any other actor on the film. Thanks Evan and #ryanmurphy @ahsfx for accommodating!

A photo posted by Bryan Singer (@bryanjaysinger) on

If the new scene took a month and a half to shoot, let's assume they're working an average of five out of every seven days, resulting in...let's call it 32 days of filming. X-Men: Days of Future Past's Quicksilver scene only took two days to film. So this one took sixteen times longer to make, and even though it's only going to be three minutes of screen time, it sounds like a significant amount of work went into making this scene as awesome as possible. I can't wait to see what they have in store.

X-Men: Apocalypse arrives in theaters on May 27th.

Fun New Trailer For FULLER HOUSE Released

Fun New Trailer for FULLER HOUSE Released

As someone who grew up watching Full House, it's hard not to be excited to see the old gang get back together for the Netflix revival series Fuller House. It's been fun to see my kids find Full House on their own and see it become one of their favorite shows to watch. Since they've only been watching it for the past few months, my kids were a little confused and freaked out about how the characters aged so fast for the new show, but I explained that the original show took place in the '90s. Now they're very excited to watch the new series.

The new trailer for Fuller House premiered on Ellen and it has since been released on EllenTube for you to watch. It's really great to see all these characters interacting with each other again. Who would've thought that something like this would actually ever happen?

In Fuller House, the adventures that began in 1987 on Full House continue, with veterinarian D.J. Tanner-Fuller (Candace Cameron Bure) recently widowed and living in San Francisco. D.J.’s younger sister/aspiring musician Stephanie Tanner (Jodie Sweetin) and D.J.’s lifelong best friend/fellow single mother Kimmy Gibbler (Andrea Barber), along with Kimmy’s feisty teenage daughter Ramona (Soni Nicole Bringas), all move in to help take care of D.J.’s three boys — the rebellious 12-year-old Jackson (Michael Champion), neurotic 7-year-old Max (Elias Harger) and her newborn baby, Tommy Jr (Messitt Twins).

The new show will also feature guest appearances by John Stamos as Jesse Katsopolis, Bob Saget as Danny Tanner, Dave Coulier as Joey Gladstone, Lori Loughlin as Becky Katsopolis, and Scott Weinger as Steve Hale.

The series is set to debut on Friday, February 26th on Netflix.

New STAR TREK TV Show Snags HANNIBAL's Bryan Fuller as Showrunner

0
0

Big news for Star Trek fans: Vulture reports that Hannibal and Pushing Daisies creator Bryan Fuller has been tapped as the co-creator, executive producer, and showrunner of the new CBS revival of the classic sci-fi series.

Fuller and Alex Kurtzman will co-create the show, which is set to debut on CBS's All Access digital platform next year. (The way fans will have to consume the show is something Mick is NOT happy about.) Fuller, who got his start in the industry working on Trek shows like Deep Space Nine and Voyager, is thrilled to come on board:

“My very first experience of Star Trek is my oldest brother turning off all the lights in the house and flying his model of a D7 Class Klingon Battle Cruiser through the darkened halls,” Fuller said. “Before seeing a frame of the television series, the Star Trek universe lit my imagination on fire. It is without exaggeration a dream come true to be crafting a brand new iteration … with fellow franchise alum Alex Kurtzman.”

Fuller is currently working on an adaptation of Neil Gaiman's American Gods for Starz, and it seems like the future of Trek on TV is definitely in good hands with him in the captain's chair.
