Jackie Earle Haley Will Play a Villain in AMC’s PREACHER

$
0
0

Watchmen star Jackie Earle Haley has been perfectly cast in the role of the villainous role of Odin Quincannon in AMC's upcoming Preacher series. The character will have a six episode story arc in the series. Here's a description:

Haley's Odin is described as a small, decrepit man with the unscrupulous iron will necessary to be the most powerful man in Annville County, Texas. The chief employer in town, Odin runs Quincannon Meat & Power, a 125-year-old family run cattle slaughterhouse business.

Odin is a member of the local KKK branch in the comic book and he doesn't get along with the main character of the story, Reverand Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper), at all. Odin is an incredibly twisted character and at one point (potential spoiler alert) Jesse finds him having sex with a mannequin made out of meat. Haley is a great actor and there's no doubt he's going to bring this character to life in a creepy-ass way that will make fans happy.

Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg are bringing Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon's comic to life and they are even directing the pilot episode. Here's the synopsis:

Preacher follows Reverend Jesse Custer, a tough Texas preacher who has lost his faith, and has learned that God has left Heaven and abandoned his responsibilities. He finds himself the only person capable of tracking God down, demanding answers, and making him answer for his dereliction of duty. Accompanying Jesse on his journey is his former girlfriend and a friendly vampire who seems to prefer a pint in the pub to the blood of the innocent. On his tail is one of the most iconic bad guys in print – an immortal, unstoppable killing machine named the Saint of Killers —a western lone gunman archetype whose sole purpose is to hunt and kill Jesse.

The series is will be released sometime in mid-2016, but it will make its world premiere at this year's SXSW festival.

Brazilian Artist Creates Cool Mashups of David Bowie and Famous Pop Culture Characters

Butcher Billy, a Brazilian artist, paid tribute to the late David Bowie by creating some amazing mashups of the singer with different cult pop culture characters. To make the illustrations even cooler, Butcher Billy adds some of Bowie’s most famous song titles.

“I said that time may change me.” Bowie has always had a huge impact on my career and personal life – his influence can be seen in tons of my art pieces and even past projects entirely dedicated to The Thin White Duke. I was just figuring out this concept having a couple of artworks ready when I’ve heard about the shocking news. In the wake of the event I was surprised to learn that so many people have been affected by his sound & vision just as I’ve been. So I’ve decided to make this my first work in progress project."

This amazing set of mashups is an on-going project and each day the illustrator will share a new image. If you want to follow his work, you can visit his pages on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Behance.

Spielberg's READY PLAYER ONE Moves to 2018 to Avoid STAR WARS

$

I'm finally fully caught up with George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire, and I've just started reading a book I've been wanting to read for years: Ernest Cline's Ready Player One. Steven Spielberg is directing the film adaptation, which was set to go head to head at the box office with the newly-rescheduled Star Wars: Episode VIII in December of 2017. But now, following in the footsteps of James Cameron's Avatar 2, Warner Bros. has decided that maybe that isn't such a great idea, so they've moved Ready Player One from December 15th, 2017, to March 30th, 2018, where it will face off against one of Universal's rebooted monster movies. Yep, that seems like a much wiser decision.

Olivia Cooke will play the female lead in Ready Player One, while Ben Mendelsohn will play the villain. Here's the full synopsis of the book:

At once wildly original and stuffed with irresistible nostalgia, READY PLAYER ONE is a spectacularly genre-busting, ambitious, and charming debut—part quest novel, part love story, and part virtual space opera set in a universe where spell-slinging mages battle giant Japanese robots, entire planets are inspired by Blade Runner, and flying DeLoreans achieve light speed.
It’s the year 2044, and the real world is an ugly place.
Like most of humanity, Wade Watts escapes his grim surroundings by spending his waking hours jacked into the OASIS, a sprawling virtual utopia that lets you be anything you want to be, a place where you can live and play and fall in love on any of ten thousand planets.
And like most of humanity, Wade dreams of being the one to discover the ultimate lottery ticket that lies concealed within this virtual world. For somewhere inside this giant networked playground, OASIS creator James Halliday has hidden a series of fiendish puzzles that will yield massive fortune—and remarkable power—to whoever can unlock them.
For years, millions have struggled fruitlessly to attain this prize, knowing only that Halliday’s riddles are based in the pop culture he loved—that of the late twentieth century. And for years, millions have found in this quest another means of escape, retreating into happy, obsessive study of Halliday’s icons. Like many of his contemporaries, Wade is as comfortable debating the finer points of John Hughes’s oeuvre, playing Pac-Man, or reciting Devo lyrics as he is scrounging power to run his OASIS rig.
And then Wade stumbles upon the first puzzle.
Suddenly the whole world is watching, and thousands of competitors join the hunt—among them certain powerful players who are willing to commit very real murder to beat Wade to this prize. Now the only way for Wade to survive and preserve everything he knows is to win. But to do so, he may have to leave behind his oh-so-perfect virtual existence and face up to life—and love—in the real world he’s always been so desperate to escape.
A world at stake.
A quest for the ultimate prize.
Are you ready?

How STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS Should Have Ended

The How It Should Have Ended team has been on a Star Wars streak over the past few months, offering their unique blend of humor to the endings of Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, but I'm happy to say that they're back with a brand new video looking at the biggest movie in American box office history, J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Be sure to watch all the way to the end. There's a great Step Brothers reference in there, and a Maz/Chewie moment that shippers will certainly appreciate.

SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD Gets an Honest Trailer

ScreenJunkies are back with their latest Honest Trailer, and this one takes a look at Edgar Wright's Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. By now, you know what you're getting when you tune in to one of these things: stale jokes, surface level commentary, etc. As someone who read the comics and really enjoys this movie, I feel like this video doesn't engage very much with the movie. There's a lot more going on here than this Honest Trailer gives the film credit for.

One of my fondest pop culture-related memories is being at Comic-Con in 2010 when Wright led a select group of Hall H to a theater to unveil the movie right there in San Diego, with Metric playing live on stage.

Also — and it's been a while since I read the whole series, so maybe I have this wrong — but doesn't the comic end with Scott and Ramona together, capping off with nearly the same shot of the two of them disappearing into one of Ramona's subspace doors? What are these guys talking about where they rewrote the ending so Scott ends up with Ramona in the movie? I'm pretty sure that's (more or less) how it goes down in the comic.

Anyway, check it out for yourselves below:

Heartbreaking Lost Footage From MRS. DOUBTFIRE Makes Me Miss Robin Williams All Over Again

The theatrical cut of Mrs. Doubtfire that fans know and love already walks a very fine line between bitter depression and fanciful comedy as it grapples with the emotional fallout of a divorce and a father's attempt to remain a force in his children's lives. Now we have a couple of newly uncovered deleted scenes (shared by Matthew Keys on YouTube) that provide a deeper look into some of the darker elements of the story. In the first, Robin Williams' Daniel Hiller shows up late for his daughter's spelling bee, and in the second, the children overhear a fight between Daniel and Miranda (Sally Field). It's probably a good thing these scenes were cut, because I can imagine them being pretty devastating for kids who didn't grow up in an environment like that, and it might have turned out that these were some of the most memorable scenes instead of the more ridiculous, uplifting, and comedic sequences with Williams dressed in drag.

The actor's heartfelt, meta speech about acting, backed by Howard Shore's score, nearly brought tears to my eyes, and it made me desperately miss him all over again.

A DEADPOOL Sequel has Already Been Greenlit By Fox!

I've got some great news for all you Deadpool fans out there! Fox is so confident that Deadpool is going to do well at the box office that they are already in the process of developing a sequel!

According to THR, Deadpool screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are currently writing a script for the sequel which has already received a greenlight from the studio. I'm honestly kind of surprised by this news. I mean, I was hoping that Deadpool 2 would happen, but I wasn't expecting it to happen this fast. I thought for sure that they'd wait to see how the film did until after it opened, especially since it's an R-rated superhero film.

Tim Miller hasn't officially signed on to direct the sequel yet, but according to the report, Fox is looking to keep the Deadpool creative team together to give us an awesome sequel. Since Ryan Reynolds said he never wants to stop playing the anti-hero, you can bet your ass he'll be back as well.

Miller has already been talking about the sequel and what he would like to see in it. One of those things in the inclusion of Deadpool's frenemy Cable in which he explains: "If we don’t put Cable in ‘Deadpool 2,’ I think we’ll be run out of town on a rail." So it looks like we can expect to see Cable!

The R-rated action comedy is set to be released this week on February 12th, and now not only am I excited to see the first movie, but I'm also excited to see the sequel! To think... this al started because someone leaked that Deadpool test footage.

Johnny Depp Set to Star in Universal's THE INVISIBLE MAN

As you know, Universal Pictures is looking to reboot all of their classic horror films and monsters for a new generation. The Wolf Man and The Mummy are two films currently in development, and now the studio is ready to get rolling on The Invisible Man. Deadline is reporting that they've cast Johnny Deep as the lead in the film! The character was previously played by Claude Rains in the 1933 adaption of H.G. Wells' classic novel.

johnny-depp-set-to-star-in-universals-the-invisible-man

The story follows a scientist named Dr. Jack Griffen who finds a way to turn himself invisible. This comes at a price, though, because it screws with his sanity and makes him murderously insane.

As of right now, there are no details on who is writing or directing the film, but Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan are set to produce it along with all of the other monster movies that Universal is making. They are building these films as a connected cinematic universe, and I am really hoping that they turn out great. I wasn't impressed with Dracula Untold, but let's see how these new films turn out. With Depp jumping on board The Invisible Man and Tom Cruise set to star in The Mummy they haven't had any issue bringing in A-list talent.

Apparently this film is a big priority at the studio so I guess we can expect to see even more movement on it in the near future. I think Depp will be perfect in the role, and I'm actually excited to see how he makes this character his own. We will next seen him on the big screen in Disney's Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass, and he's also been working on Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

DEADPOOL Co-Creator Fabian Nicieza Calls Movie a "Near-Perfect Translation"

The majority of the reviews I’ve read for Tim Miller and Ryan ReynoldsDeadpool movie have been exploding with positivity. Rob Liefeld loved it, and now co-creator Fabian Nicieza has shared his thoughts on the film in a brief review that he posted on Facebook.

Nicieza scripted Deadpool’s first comic book appearance and has been writing for the character the character on and off since he was introduced to the Marvel universe. He calls the movie a “near-perfect translation” of the character he created, which is a pretty big praise. Here's what he said:

The DEADPOOL movie is funny and action-packed like you'd want, but also sweet, sad, romantic, and uplifting like I wanted it to be.
It is a near-perfect translation of the character Rob and I created who has been continually improved upon by so many excellent writers and artists over 25 years of comics publishing.
Big thanks to Rob Liefeld and Tim Miller for working very hard to ensure we received credit and Easter Eggs, too!
Thanks to Tim Miller (again), Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, Ryan Reynolds, and the entire cast for a truly fun and rewarding experience.
Thanks for a very brief, very unexpected cameo of a character that warmed me to the marrow.
And especially thanks for spelling my name right on the street sign. The odds were against you on that one.

So for those of you who don’t care for the movie, just know that the creators of the character felt that the character was portrayed in the film exactly how he was supposed to be portrayed. I have to give props to Fox for allowing Miller, Reynolds, and Liefeld to get the opportunity to make a movie that stayed true to the character, regardless of how utterly insane he is. A movie as crazy as this would have never happened with Marvel and Disney in charge.

Deadpool hits theaters February 12th, 2016.

Charlize Theron Wanted for the Villain in FAST 8

According to DeadlineFast 8 is going to have a female villain, and the studio is currently looking to cast Charlize Theron in the role, which would be insanely awesome! I would love to see her as a villain in the Fast & Furious franchise. If she's cast they should call the film Fast & Furiosa

The report says that director "F. Gary Gray and screenwriter Chris Morgan are inserting a fierce female villain into the story." It's not surprising that they would want to get Theron on board because she's proven that she's as fierce as fierce can get! Mad Max: Fury Road proved that.

Theron doesn't have any other conflicting projects, so if she wants the role it seems like it would be hers for the taking. Gray and Theron previously worked together on The Italian Job, so with that established working relationship it seems like her joining Fast 8 is very feasible. I hope she takes the gig!

Fast 8 lands in theaters April 14th, 2017.

I’ve got a fantastically entertaining Batman fan film for you to watch today called "The Demon in the Dark." The short film is packed with action, chaos, destruction, and some really cool surprises that fans will enjoy. The story starts off solid and then escalates into an explosive conclusion. Here’s the synopsis:

They're not good at being good.
A secret group of six must work together to deliver a "package" while evading an unknown predator prowling the dark streets of Gotham City. Is it a monster, an alien, or simply a psychopath on a rampage?
Explosions, stabbings and gunfire quickly become part of the plan as the squad desperately races to the drop off point, leaving smoking piles of destruction in their wake.

The short film was written by Matt Clouston and directed by Letia Clouston, and I think a lot of you are going to get a kick out of it, so check it out!

Deadpool’s strongest trait is perhaps his tendency not to take himself too seriously. And what is more, he almost never takes anyone else too seriously either, which shapes the character the way he is – AWESOME! Now, in an interview for Yahoo, Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds is killing it once again.

And in case you have wondered whether Deadpool can describe his technique… Yes, he can.

Man Repurposes "Hoverboard" Into Flying Nimbus From DRAGON BALL Series!

Did you catch the quotes around the "hoverboard" in the title? That was for all you guys who take it super personal that people call it a hoverboard when it is not. Anyway, someone finally went viral on one of these and didn't break their back or catch on fire doing it! A man in Taiwan has gone viral after taking to the streets on his "Flying Nimbus" dressed as Goku from the Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z series.

Is it just me, or is this guy picking up quite a bit of speed in this video? In one shot he's even at a stoplight in traffic! Hope he has some senzu beans for when he's inevitably struck by a car.

Whatever happened to Nimbus when Goku learned to fly anyway? Why didn't Chi Chi just use it when Goku and Piccolo couldn't pass their drivers test?

Thanks to The Verge for the heads up!

THE FLASH's Visit To Earth-2 Was Hands Down The Series' Best Episode Yet

$

0

It seems like ever since The Flash has premiered it has been breaking barriers in superhero shows. It was the first hero show in a long time that wasn't drowned in darkness and agony. Barry Allen, despite his sad origins, is a happy guy and a unique change of pace we haven't seen revisited until Supergirl burst onto the scene this year.

Then we had the crossover episodes, which while they were a collaborative effort, really helped out Arrow in a time when it was experiencing a slump of a season (in my personal opinion it's weakest to date). We also witnessed time travel and really started to dive deep into the endless possibilities it could present for the series.

Last night we saw that dream realized in the show's first visit to Earth-2. Barry, Cisco, and Earth-2 Wells jump in the speed cannon and travel to the other world to stop Zoom once and for all. What could have easily been a convoluted misstep in the series turned out to be one of the most awesome hours of Superhero television I've seen in awhile.

I didn't expect the jump to Earth-2 to be a simple one. Comic books have done it for years, and general audiences are still confused over what exactly Gotham has to do with Batman, so I was ready to forgive any misstep that happened but man they did it.

Actually they didn't just do it, they KILLED it.

Everything was amazing. The redesign of the city, the subtle differences in technology, and the acting...oh, the acting was great. Just to recap we saw...

  • Joe singing as a lounge singer (quite awesomely I might add)
  • Iris as an aggressive police officer
  • Deadshot as a police captain
  • Cisco as a cold hearted super powered villain
  • Caitlyn as a seductive killer

You get so used to seeing these actors play who they are on screen it was almost a shock and great surprise to see them stepping so far out of their roles!

Oh and the Easter eggs were numerous. The trip through the time stream showed us either future Green Arrow or Connor Hawke, Supergirl, '90s Flash John Wesley Shipp, Grodd (who is rumored to be main villain of next season), and JONAH HEX AND A LEGION FLIGHT RING! Cosmic Book News managed to grab some screens you can see below.

Oh, and did anyone else catch Barry's phone?

It was like one of those goofy side adventures the crew took on Star Trek: TNG all the time in the most awesome way possible. The best part? We get to see part two next week! I honestly can't wait!

Johnny Depp Plays Donald Trump in 50-Minute Funny Or Die Biopic

Johnny Depp has taken on one of his kookiest roles yet! He plays Donald Trump in a 50 minute comedy biopic film secretly produced by Funny Or Die. The film is called Donald Trump’s The Art Of The Deal: The Movie, and it is presented as a lost movie from the 1980s, “directed” by none other than the Trump himself.

Donald Trump has it all. Money, power, respect, and an Eastern European bride. But all his success didn’t come for nothing. First, he inherited millions of dollars from his rich father, then he grabbed New York City by the balls. Now you can learn the art of negotiation, real estate, and high-quality brass in this illuminating made-for-TV special feature, Funny Or Die Presents Donald Trump’s The Art Of The Deal: The Movie.

The movie was shot in December, and it also stars Ron Howard, Alfred Molina, Robert Morse, Patton Oswalt, Jack McBrayer, Michaela Watkins, Henry Winkler, Stephen Merchant, Christopher Lloyd, Kristen Schaal, Andy Richter, Paul Scheer, Rob Huebel, Tymberlee Hill, Alf, Jordan Coleman, Joe Nuñez, and Jeremy Konner.

Funny or Die editor-in-chief Owen Burke talked to the New York Times about the project, saying:

“The plan was to move really fast because we thought Trump would go away, as least as a presidential candidate. When he bizarrely didn’t go away, we had a little more time. But that meant keeping the secret for longer. We had a few people sign nondisclosures, but mostly we just begged people not to say anything.”

The biopic is pretty hilarious, and it's so weird and funny seeing Deep in this off-the-wall role. You can watch the trailer for the biopic below, and you can click here to watch the full thing.

The SONIC THE HEDGEHOG Movie Will Be a Live-Action Animation Hybrid

$

Last year, it was announced that Sonic the Hedgehog would be getting the feature film treatment. Sega is teaming up with Sony Pictures to bring it to the big screen. We learned at the time that the film would help be developed by Sega's CG animation film company, so I just assumed that it would be a full CG animated film, which would have been great!

Unfortunately, in this latest update by Sega CEO Hajime Satomi, we learn that the film is going to be a live-action-animation hybrid film, which isn't appealing at all. These CG animated and live-action hybrid films never work, and it breaks my heart that this is the direction Sony and Sega are taking the production. During an interview with The Worldfolio, Satomi said:

"Sega Sammy Group is currently planning with Sony Pictures to create a live-action and animation hybrid ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ movie scheduled for release in 2018. Like with this CG animation production, we would like to expand our business into other entertainment areas beyond what we are currently involved."

The script for the movie is being written by Evan Susser and Van Robichaux. There are no plot details that have been revealed yet, but the game focuses on the world’s fastest hedgehog, whose peaceful life is often interrupted by his arch nemesis, Doctor Eggman.

Over the years, we've seen a couple Sonic the Hedgehog animated series. There was one in the '90s and a more recent CG series called Sonic Boom. The character also made his first big screen appearance in Disney's Wreck-It-Ralph.

I hate the thought of Sonic interacting with ridiculous live-action human characters like Jason Lee in Alvin and the Chipmunks or Neil Patrick Harris in The Smurfs. That's the bad movie road I fear Sonic is going to be running down.

The New Hanna Barbera Comics Sound Surprisingly Good

So if you thought the news that DC was going to be revamping Hanna Barbera characters into comics was kind of boring, you aren't alone. I wasn't giving it a second thought until I saw this latest episode of DC All Access where we actually see what facelifts are coming to these classic characters.

Dan DiDio gives a rundown of some of the new series, including Future Quest which will show Johnny Quest teaming up with Space Ghost, Birdman, Frankenstein Jr. etc. Jim Lee is reimagining Scooby Doo and the gang in the apocalypse. The weirdest of all (and probably most exciting) is a mashup of Mad Max and Wacky Racers called Wacky Race Land. How is that going to work out?! I can't wait to read it! Ryan Reynolds Says He Might Have Leaked The Original DEADPOOL Test Footage

Ryan Reynolds was on Fallon last night and revealed some possibly incriminating things! Entertainment Weekly reports the actor said that he may or may not have leaked the Deadpool test footage that appeared online three years ago. He's 70% sure he didn't do it, but knows for sure he is a suspect...

“There’s four of us: me, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Tim Miller the director. We all said at the beginning that someone should leak it, so the idea was planted, but I’m 70 percent sure it wasn’t me.”

That's a pretty damn bold move considering that could have gotten the film shelved and never seen again. That didn't happen, though. In fact the footage was so well received that Fox had no choice but to greenlight the film due to demand from fans! Watch the clip below.
