The Creator of THE EXPANSE Explains the Origin of the Show's Language

There's been lots of buzz lately about Syfy's new show The Expanse, and it's all really good. Being called the space Game of Thrones is a good rub by itself, but then you go into realistic G-force physics of flying in space, and now the explanation of the show's created language! I'm well aware The Expanse is not the first science fiction show to create its own language, but this is one of the first interviews where I've actually heard the origins of how something like this actually comes to be. Creator Nick Farmer sounds like a smart guy! It's also awesome how it's rooted within hybrid human languages, which falls in line with the show's plot.

I haven't watched this show yet...but I'm about to binge right after I'm done with this post! Those who have seen it, what do you think?

In honor of Zoolander 2 coming to theaters this Friday, Paramount Pictures has opened a pop-up exhibit in Los Angeles that pays tribute to the male models who died in a gasoline accident in the first film. Check out the original scene below:

I stopped by the installation this past weekend, and if you're a Zoolander fan in the L.A. area, you're going to want to check this out. There's not only a fountain depicting Meekus, Brint, and Rufus, but the Bronco they drive in the movie is on display next to a pop-up gas station where you can recreate the scene with your friends. Plus, there's an employee there offering faux orange mocha frappuccinos. Check out some photos below:

JASON BOURNE: Matt Damon Talks About Returning to The Role and What's Changed

0

Yesterday, Universal debuted the first trailer and official title of the fifth Bourne film, which is now officially known as Jason Bourne. Check that out here if you haven't seen it yet, and you can take a look at the poster right here.

Matt Damon is reuniting with director Paul Greengrass to continue the story of the former government operative, and Damon spoke with EW in a recent interview and talked about returning to the character after so many years away, what kinds of changes we can expect in the new movie, and more.

On the real-life events that inspired the movie:

Since 2007, so much has changed. There’s been the financial collapse, the great recession, all these issues of cyber warfare and civil liberties – things that are slowly coming to into the zeitgeist as we start to grapple with what the future is going to look like. And so those are kind of somewhere in the stew of our story. If you look at the first three, they are films that are product of the Bush presidency. Thematically, they touch on things people were talking and thinking about during that presidency. This one feels like a movie about today.

On where we find Bourne when the movie begins:

Well I don’t know how much I should say. [Laughs] We talked a lot about what state he should be in, and where we came to was that if you found him fat and happy and content, you don’t really have a movie. So we talked about how at the end of Bourne Ultimatum, he gets his memory back and it kind of completed that identity journey for him. But does that complete things for the character or not? And the conclusion we came to is no – we find him in a very dark and tortured place. He’s living with the same things as he was before, and then he goes to find Julia Stiles’ character, who basically says, “Just because you remember everything, doesn’t mean you know everything.” So you find him in a place that’s dark and unresolved.
This is the completion of this journey that started in the Bourne Identity. It’s part of the first three [movies], it’s not a whole new chapter. It feels like the conclusion, even though we’re not saying it’s the conclusion, it feels like the conclusion of my identity journey. It goes deeper than Ultimatum, basically.

On breakout star Alicia Vikander's role in the film:

You have to do something great and new, and Alicia is our great and new. She plays a new character we’re introducing, and she’s a specialist in cyber. Instead of just the three arenas of warfare — air, land and sea — there’s now this fourth element: cyber. The implications of that are huge, and she’s representing that in the movie. We also have Tommy Lee Jones in the movie, and he’s kind of representing the analog CIA in the way the old guard thinks. Those two go head to head quite a bit. Introducing those two new characters, I think, is probably one of the biggest trailblazing things we’ve done in this movie. One thing about these movies is that the casts are so good. I always feel so amazed at the people we get. If we have any kind of formula, it’s hiring the very best actors we can to fill out these roles, and Alicia and Tommy Lee are two absolute heavyweights.

There's more in the full interview at EW, so if you're a Bourne fan, head that way and check the rest out. Jason Bourne blasts into theaters on July 29th.

The second half of The Walking Dead Season 6 is going to bring us all kinds of crazy changes for the series. We are going to be introduced to the most insane villain yet, people are going to die, and there will be a few other things that will never be the same.

SPOILER WARNING:

One of the big changes that takes place includes Carl. It looks like they are going to follow the comics in regards to an injury that Carl sustains. The poor kid loses his eye! I was wondering if the series would work in this plot point and a piece of promo art has surfaced that confirms they are doing it. You can see it below the comic book art:

For those of you who don't know, in the comics Carl loses his eye and some of his face after he was accidently shot in the face by a character named Douglas Monroe. That character does not exist in the series, though, so there is going to be another character that does this to the Carl. We'll just have to wait and see who it turns out to be.

The Walking Dead Season 6 will return to AMC on Sunday, February 14th.

Trailer For Colin Farrell's Surreal Dystopian Satire THE LOBSTER

Imagine we all lived in a dystopian world where time meant everything, especially when we talk about love. Imagine that people had to find their true love, but they had a deadline measured in precisely 45 days, and if they didn't find that person, they would turn into an animal...a lobster, for instance.

That’s the world Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos presents us with in his new film The Lobster. A movie which is hilarious but somehow capable of evoking a sort of bittersweet coldness. A bizarre but fantastic love story with an invisible ticking clock attached to it.

Now the film grabs the attention of cinephiles with a brand new trailer which features stars Colin Farrell, John C. Reilly, Rachel WeiszLea SeydouxBen Whishaw, and Olivia Colman.

The movie will be released in theaters on May 11, 2016, and you can read our review from last year's AFI FEST right here and our brief capsule review from this year's Sundance Film Festival here.

Adam Savage Encounters His Favorite Movie Prop: Deckard's Gun From BLADE RUNNER

Adam Savage is a incredibly lucky guy. That's not to say he hasn't worked to be in the position he's in. At a young age he knew he wanted to work on films, and he turned that desire into a career in prop building and special effects. His hard work and know-how led to him becoming co-host of a little show called Mythbusters. Now he gets to entertain both himself and us by reaching out to like-minded prop builders and collectors to showcase some of his favorite prop pieces that have influenced him. Thanks to Dan Lanigan of Mammoth Props, Adam gets to finally see what is possibly his favorite movie prop of all time (his words): Deckard's gun from Blade Runner. With childlike wonder and an engineer's eye, he goes over every detail of the pistol. He even brought his own reproduction to compare. Adam has spent many years replicating the gun in his own shop. If you want to see his personal collection of replicas and the obsessive amount of detail he's put into it, check out these videos.

MIKE AND DAVE NEED WEDDING DATES Trailer Gives Anna Kendrick and Aubrey Plaza a Chance to Shine

I didn't see Bad Grandpa, but everything I saw from the marketing and the reviews indicate it's a disaster. That's a shame, because I like Aubrey Plaza and after being a little annoyed with his Disney-era projects, I don't mind Zac Efron. But now it looks like the two of them are going to bounce back in a new comedy that looks much better than Bad Grandpa. This one's called Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, and it stars Efron, Plaza, and Pitch Perfect co-stars Anna Kendrick and Adam DeVine. Efron and DeVine play the title characters, brothers who need to find a couple of classy girls as dates for their sister's wedding in Hawaii. Kendrick and Plaza play trashy girls who want an excuse to party in Hawaii, and when they pair up, all sorts of shenanigans ensue.

Check out the first trailer below. Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates hits theaters on July 8th, and I'm looking forward to this one.

Hard-partying brothers Mike (Adam Devine) and Dave (Zac Efron) place an online ad to find the perfect dates (Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza) for their sister’s Hawaiian wedding. Hoping for a wild getaway, the boys instead find themselves outsmarted and out-partied by the uncontrollable duo.

Nicolas Cage to Star in Revenge Thriller VENGEANCE: A LOVE STORY

0
0

Nicolas Cage has spent the past five years or so buried in mostly-forgettable movies. I heard good things about 2013's Joe but didn't have a chance to see it myself, and other than that, it seems like the last thing he was in that I really enjoyed was the first Kick-Ass all the way back in 2010. The Academy Award-winning actor has just joined a new project, but sadly, it sounds more in line with his more recent output instead of a true return to form.

Variety reports that Cage will star in Vengeance: A Love Story, a movie based on Joyce Carol Oates' 2003 novel Rape: A Love Story. The plot follows a single mother who is gang raped, and the Gulf War veteran/cop who vows to get revenge on the men who left her for dead. Sounds pretty brutal, but we'll see if John Mankiewicz's screenplay and whoever eventually comes on board to direct can elevate it beyond its premise into something memorable and worthy of Cage's unique skill set.

Filming begins in Atlanta next month. This doesn't sound like it's going to be a huge, VFX-filled movie, so I wouldn't be surprised if it popped up before 2016 is over.

Watch: Psylocke vs. Deadpool in Instagram Sword Fight

We finally got a good look at Olivia Munn's Psylocke in action in yesterday's Super Bowl spot for X-Men: Apocalypse, but before that trailer hit the internet, Munn took to Instagram to share a surprising new video of her own.

For months now, the actress has been giving fans a behind-the-scenes look as she trains for the swordplay in the upcoming action film, and yesterday she showcased some more of her slashing skills before introducing a fellow member of Fox's X-Men cinematic universe. I won't spoil it, but take a look at what happens below:

Ava DuVernay Eyed To Direct A WRINKLE IN TIME and Colin Trevorrow's INTELLIGENT LIFE

0
0

Ava DuVernay broke out in a big way with Selma a couple of years ago, and now studios are tripping over themselves to work with her. Marvel Studios courted her to direct Black Panther, but she passed because she didn't think she'd be able to retain her artistic freedom as much as she would like in Kevin Feige's producer-driven system (Creed director Ryan Coogler eventually took on the Black Panther directing gig). And now two other studios are hoping to lure her in for upcoming movies.

Deadline reveals that DuVernay is being eyed to direct A Wrinkle in Time for Disney, which is a film adaptation of Madeleine L'Engle's classic novel about a young girl (and her friends) who search for her missing father, a government scientist who was working on a top secret project involving an inter-dimensional tesseract. Frozen co-director Jennifer Lee wrote the screenplay.

DuVernay is also "in the conversation" to direct Intelligent Life for Amblin, which is a revamped version of Jurassic World director/co-writer Colin Trevorrow and writer Derek Connolly's screenplay called The Ambassador. That original idea centered on a U.N. delegate tasked with being Earth's representative when humanity makes contact with alien life, and then he falls in love with a mysterious woman who turns out to be an alien. Deadline claims that basic logline is unchanged, though the title is now Intelligent Life.

I'd love to see DuVernay direct either of these projects. They both sound like they could benefit from her filmmaking touch, but it remains to be seen whether she's interested enough in either one of them to devote the next year or two of her life to it. She also seems very aware of the power she has in the industry right now, so she'll likely make sure she ends up working with producers, writers, and other filmmakers she knows she'll be able to collaborate well with (as evidenced by her handling of Black Panther). Which film do you think is a better fit for her?

First Look at B.D. Wong as Hugo Strange on GOTHAM

TVInsider brings us the first look (above) at Jurassic Park and Jurassic World star B.D. Wong as Batman villain Dr. Hugo Strange from Fox's Gotham.

We recently heard that Jada Pinkett Smith's Fish Mooney would be coming back to reprise her role in the back half of season 2, and got a good look at Nathan Darrow as Mr. Freeze, a villain who will apparently be a big factor in the episodes to come. Now comes our first look at Dr. Hugo Strange, the mastermind behind Arkham Asylum. Wong tells the site:

“What [he] is doing in there is indeed very, very bad,” teases Wong. “Imagine the worst thing someone might do. Then multiply that by 10.”

That seems like ludicrous hyperbole to me. The worst thing someone might do and multiply it by 10? That level of violence and depravity isn't even possible to depict on network television, so I think Wong is getting a little too excited with that quote. But apparently he has some nasty plans in store for Robin Lord Taylor's Oswald Cobblepot (aka The Penguin), who becomes the asylum's newest resident.

Teases Wong: “He is never the same from the moment he walks through the door.”

Gotham returns to Fox on February 29th.

Supercut: "I Should Have Killed You When I Had The Chance"

Wow. I knew the phrase "I should have killed you when I had the chance" was an old cliche, but I didn't think it had been used this many times in movies over the years. The great thing about watching supercuts like these is seeing all of the different types of movies these lines appear in, and it also serves the dual function of warning current writers to come up with something a little more original in their own work. Check it out below, while you still have the chance (NSFW language):

Hayao Miyazaki Film Food — Part One: SPIRITED AWAY

the-food-of-hayao-miyazaki-films-part-1-spirited-away

Hayao Miyazaki's movies are widely known for their warm colors, cute pets, brave characters, attractive storyline, and incredible attention to detail. But one of the most significant parts of any Miyazaki film is actually the food. Miyazaki uses food in specific ways to bring characters together, build their relationships, and add depth to the story. This week we're running a series of articles exploring the food in his films.

The first of these five editorials focuses on the food of Spirited Away.

the-food-of-hayao-miyazaki-films-part-1-spirited-away1

In Spirited Away, Chihiro and her parents are moving to a new house. On their journey, they find a secret place which was so beautiful and had lots of delicious food. Usually, people don't just eat a stranger’s food because it is rude. I guess Chihiro’s parents were really hungry, though, so they decided to eat first and pay later. Miyazaki does a really good job presenting those foods — large amounts of roast chicken, soup dumpling, pastries piled up like mountains. Unfortunately, those foods were prepared for ancient gods, and they tend to make people pay when they are wronged. Chihiro’s parents ate the food without paying first, so they are turned into pigs. To save her parents, Chihiro has to work for the bad witch.

the-food-of-hayao-miyazaki-films-part-1-spirited-away2 the-food-of-hayao-miyazaki-films-part-1-spirited-away3

Chihiro is a brave young girl. Although her parents are turned into pigs, she does not give up and works really hard to save her parents. At the beginning, nobody likes her because she is a human. However, after people see her kindness and hard work, she makes friends. People share food when they are trying to be nice to someone. Chihiro’s friends do the same thing. Stuffed buns are one of the most popular foods in Asia. Usually, the buns are stuffed with meat and vegetables. In the movie, the bun is different because it is stuffed with sweet red beans. In China, red beans mean that you miss someone. Chihiro is only a little girl. Although she needs to be brave in front of others, she must miss her parents so much.

the-food-of-hayao-miyazaki-films-part-1-spirited-away5 the-food-of-hayao-miyazaki-films-part-1-spirited-away6

On a summer evening, Chihiro sits in a sweet little house and is surrounded by her friends. There are cookies and cheesecake. They drink hot tea and talk about the amazing experiences she has had. After all of her difficulties, Chihiro finally has a moment when she can relax and talk to her friends. For Miyazaki, food is the most comforting thing. Once again, he prepared hot drinks and desserts for his little character. After this relaxing moment, Chihiro is cheered up and prepared for her final test.

the-food-of-hayao-miyazaki-films-part-1-spirited-away7

Food helps drive the main themes of the movie. First of all, don't eat other people’s food without their permission. More importantly, love your families, your friends, and even your enemies because "love is the key that opens the gate of happiness" (Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr). How do you show that love? That's easy. Share your stuffed buns and teas and cheesecakes and cookies. After all, what is more important than a joyful, loving, delicious life?

5 New DEADPOOL Spots and Ryan Reynolds Never Wants to Stop Playing Him

0

Last week, Fox held a bunch of press screening for Deadpool. I wasn’t able to attend one of these screenings, but I’ve heard nothing but great and positive things about the movie from hardcore Deadpool fans! You can read Ben’s review of the film here in case you missed it over the weekend, but he didn’t seem to like it. On the other hand, you can read Mick’s explanation of why the film is actually better than the comic books here.

In a recent interview with IGN Ryan Reynolds says he wants to play Deadpool the rest of his life and that he’ll never play another comic book character again:

"I never want to play another comic book character again; Deadpool, I would like to play for the rest of my life – that'd be fun. No, I've done a number of them, and I think it's time for other people to do them now. You've got to share the wealth on that one."

It seems like Reynolds was born to play Deadpool, and from what I’ve read in the many reviews that were released over the weekend, he was awesome in the film. Deadpool comes out later this week, but while the rest of us wait to see it, here are five new TV spots. One of them features the Merc with a Mouth cutting off Colossus in the middle of a dramatic speech and another includes him attempting to save a cat from a tree.

How To Survive THE WALKING DEAD — Comedy Sketch

With The Walking Dead season six set to return in the near future, Studio C has released a funny comedy sketch called How To Survive The Walking Dead. In it, Rick brings in a guy named Terry to talk to the group about a new way to survive a horde of walkers, and his methods of survival are very confusing for the group. Some people just like to complicate things more than they need to, though.
