A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS Finds Its Violet and Klaus

After a continuous search for the two lead roles of Violet and Claus, Netflix’s adaptation of Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events finally recruited Malina Weissman and Louis Hynes. Weissman is known for playing a young Kara Zor-El on CBS‘ DC Comics series Supergirl and young April O’Neil in Paramount Pictures’ Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Her companion, on the other hand, is a newcomer, and we can only hope for the best. In addition to this, we already pointed out that Neil Patrick Harris boarded the series as Count Olaf.

A Series of Unfortunate Events recounts the tale of the orphaned children Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire at the hands of the villainous Count Olaf, as they face trials and tribulations, misfortunes, and an evil uncle in search of their fortune, all in their quest to uncover the secret of their parents’ death. The books have sold more than 65 million copies and have been translated into 43 languages. The epic series will be executive produced by Barry Sonnenfeld, who will also direct a number of episodes, and Daniel Handler, legal, literary and social representative for Lemony Snicket.

Filming is expected to begin in March.

BLADE RUNNER 2 Begins Filming This Summer

Looks like Blade Runner 2 finally has a shooting date of this July, Den of Geek reports. In a year that's been filled with geek hype, it's surprising to think a sequel to one of the greatest science fiction films of all time could be overlooked, especially when its main star, Harrison Ford, will be returning. Deckard will be taking a backseat this go around to Ryan Gosling, whom many have speculated will be a Replicant.

The film takes place decades after the first film, literally and fictionally. I can't wait to see the world Ridley Scott first showed us updated with new effects. Hopefully this sequel is just as influential as the original and has a bad ass score as well!

Yes, Lucasfilm Will Make More STAR WARS Saga Movies After EPISODE IX

I never thought for a second that Episode IX would be the last Star Wars saga film ever made. Lucasfilm has already announced that they will be releasing at least two Star Wars films a year for many years to come, I just assumed that would include the continuation of the Star Wars started by George Lucas all those years ago.

I don’t think fans will ever get tired of Star Wars unless they start making a slew of crappy Star Wars movies, but I don’t think that’s going to happen. It’s hard to imagine a society where people aren’t excited for Star Wars. If that day ever comes, it is a sign that the end of the world is near.

Chairman and CEO or The Walt Disney Company, Bob Iger, recently confirmed plans for additional Star Wars films that I imagine will continue the story of the Skywalker legacy. He told Newsbeat:

“There are five Star Wars films – four more with Episode VII: The Force Awakens – that are in varying stages of development and production. There will be more after that, I don’t know how many, I don’t know how often.”

I know most of us expected this, but it’s nice to have confirmation. Hell, Disney didn’t spend $4 billion to end the saga at Episode IX! As of right now, the studio is developing Rian Johnson‘s Star Wars: Episode VIII, Colin Trevorrow‘s Star Wars: Episode IX, Gareth EdwardsRogue One: A Star Wars Story, and Chris Miller and Phil Lord‘s untitled Han Solo movie.

I love that Disney is going to keep this franchise alive, and as long as these films are in good hands and they make great films, the fans will be happy and keep wanting to see more. I’m excited to see where this all leads, and how it will all come to an end if it ever ends!

Watch Out For Feathers as ANGRY BIRDS Get Angrier in a New Movie Trailer

Even though Angry Birds the game didn’t really grow on me, I’m honestly beyond excited about the upcoming movie! After the official trailer, we saw some new images, followed by the Angry Birds holiday trailer, and now we have a brand new trailer that reveals a few new scenes.

The movie takes us to an island populated entirely by happy, flightless birds – or almost entirely. In this paradise, Red (Jason SudeikisWe’re the Millers, Horrible Bosses), a bird with a temper problem, speedy Chuck (Josh Gad in his first animated role since Frozen), and the volatile Bomb (Danny McBrideThis is the End, Eastbound and Down) have always been outsiders. But when the island is visited by mysterious green piggies, it’s up to these unlikely outcasts to figure out what the pigs are up to.

Directed by Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly, the angry birds get the voices of Maya RudolphKate McKinnonTony Hale, Keegan-Michael KeyBill Hader, and Peter Dinklage.

It hits theaters in 3D on May 20, 2016.

P.S. No birds were harmed in the making of this video... Almost.

Watch Jason Statham Dance in a Loincloth in a Terrible '90s Music Video

Reddit unearthed a treasure that I'm sure Jason Statham would have preferred stay buried for the foreseeable eternity. We all come from humble beginnings, it's just that when you're an actor your first job isn't at McDonalds, it's instead a backup dancer in a psychedelic pop trash video. I do not remember The Shamen or his song "Come On," must be a Europe thing? While watching Vin Diesel peddle Street Shark toys yesterday was pretty awesome, this is pretty damn hilarious and embarrassing.

Don't expect me to tell Statham that to his face!

Tom Cruise and Jerry Bruckheimer Are in Active Discusses for TOP GUN 2

Top Gun 2 is really happening, people! The movie is currently in development, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer revealed that he recently met with Tom Cruise to discuss the movie. It's great to see that the main players of the original movie are excited about pushing to get this sequel made. Even Val Kilmer is coming back to reprise his role!

This Top Gun sequel has been in development for years, and after director Tony Scott's tragic death I wasn't sure if the movie would happen, but it seems like everyone is determined to push forward. Kilmer said,

"We will all miss Tony Scott one of the kindest gentlemen I've ever met in the film biz, but let's fire up some fighter jets again!!!"

We've heard that the story would involve  a modern version of aerial warfare with drones and remote pilots. It has also been revealed the film would be set 30 years after the events we saw in Top Gun. Justin Marks wrote the script for the film, but they still have yet to hire a director. When talking about the film, Skydance Productions CEO and producer David Ellison said:

"Justin Marks is writing the screenplay right now. He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the navy have turned into today. There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie and there is no Top Gun without Maverick. It is going to be Maverick playing Maverick. I don’t think it is what people are going to expect, and we are very, very hopeful that we get to make the movie very soon. But like all things, it all comes down to the script, and Justin is writing as we speak."

As a longtime fan of Top Gun, I couldn't be more excited to see Maverick and Ice Man back up on the big screen in a new setting and taking on new challenges. I hope Ice Man snaps his teeth at Maverick again.

Baby Gets Freaked Out Seeing Kylo Ren In FORCE AWAKENS Trailer

I know, I know...the trend of fan reactions to Star Wars: The Force Awakens has come and gone. This one got me chuckling pretty hard, though. I know this baby doesn't have any idea what's going on during the airing of this trailer, but it's cool to see the raw emotion in just experiencing the color and images! I remember reading that Kylo Ren's mask design was based off a design that children would find the most unsettling, so maybe that plays into this!

My favorite part is when the baby goes from the verge of crying during the Poe torture scene to amazement in like a split second!

Tom Welling Talks SMALLVILLE and Possibly Appearing as Superman on SUPERGIRL

It's seldom acknowledged, but safe to say Tom Welling paved the way for the current state of superhero television. Smallville remains to this day a hit amongst its fans and, five years after its finale, has paved the way for numerous shows like The Flash, Arrow, and Supergirl. Welling tells Buzzfeed that the impact is lasting, but not without sacrifice...

“I spent 10 years where my life was 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. on set...from an emotional standpoint, I was basically cut off from everyone...(I) just put my head in a hole and I basically blocked everybody and everything out.”

The whole interview is really awesome and explains why Welling kind of disappeared until 2014 when he took a few small roles in films. Now Welling is back and shopping a series to networks that he created, produced, and will star in called Section 13. Here's a brief synopsis...

A CIA black ops officer-turned-private contractor who, after a personal tragedy, joins a covert organization devoted to carrying out the most difficult and dangerous high-stakes assignments

Well, Section 13 has been picked up by CBS, and fans are wondering if with the deal its possible that Welling might don the mantle of Clark Kent once again. Welling's answer was a complicated non answer, so read into it what you will...

That's not a no, but it sounds like he's not ready to discuss anything until the writers are. What are your thoughts? Smallville fans, would you be down for this cameo? Are there a lot of Smallville fans who are now watching Supergirl?

Taika Waititi on How He's Approaching THOR: RAGNAROK and Its Humor

$

Last week, director Taika Waititi premiered his amazingly funny new movie Hunt For The Wilderpeople. Seeing this film got me more excited to see what he actually plans on bringing to Marvel's Thor: Ragnarok. In a recent interview's with Cnet and Crave Online, the director spoke about how he's approaching Thor and the humor he will bring to the story:

“My strength in this is bringing my style of humor, which is probably a very different style of humor. They've had good jokes in them before, but I think where I come from is maybe a fresher style. It could just shake the entire thing up a bit.”

There's a good chance that even as dark a star as Thor: Ragnarok is, this could be one of the funniest Marvel films depending on how much humor he interjects. He also talked about joining the big budget Marvel family after directing several independent films in the past few years:

“I’m like the new kid in class! They’re really cool people. I’ve already made some great friends, and everyone wants to make the best story possible. [The development process is] very collaborative, more collaborative than I think people probably expect. It’s not just one person ordering everyone around. It’s people discussing and saying, ‘What if it was like this’ or ‘I don't think it should be like that’, which is very healthy. And it’s actually what I’m used to, coming from theatre and co-ops and collaborating.”

When asked if he could say anything regarding the plot, he said:

“No, because I don’t even know. We're still figuring out what characters are in it and how they all interact. We’re very early on in prep, storylining, figuring it all out”

I'm sure he knows where the story is going, he just doesn't want to spoil it. We've previously heard the film will kind of be like Midnight Run. While talking with Crave Online, Waititi was asked how much freedom he has on developing the film, and this was his response:

“I guess we’ll see once we get on set. I think on set it’s a different story. It’s basically about coming in under budget. [Laughs.] That’s all it’s about. If you come in under budget and on time you can do what you want, really. Just stick to what the idea of the story is. I always do that. And I’ve talked a lot about my style and the way I work on set, which is very improvisational. I make up a lot of shots on the spot sometimes but I always have a plan. I always plan what I’m going to do and then I’ll throw that plan away when I see what the actors want to do, and then we have to come to a common ground and figure that out.”

He was then asked if there’s a danger of making changes on the spot, especially when it comes to using lots of CGI in these kinds of films:

“There will definitely be that danger, yeah, but as much as possible I like to shoot practically and on locations. This will be very different for me but luckily I’ve done a lot of commercials before, some big ones, so I’m used to changing pace on bigger sets. There’s a lot of waiting around, and nobody likes to wait around while they’re setting up green screens and weird CG stuff. But yeah, these movies are so big that they have to.”

Waititi then confirmed that Marvel actually approached him to make the pitch for the third Thor film. Obviously, their instincts were right about him, and they gave him the gig! He also spoke about one aspect of the pitch he made to them:

“They watched Shadows obviously, and they watched Boy, and I think the combination of those two films, you get that I wasn’t just like a crazy comedy director or too dramatic. They wanted to weave a little bit away from that. […] Basically how I pitched it was like, [Thor] just needs to be the most interesting character. If you’re going to call the movie Thor, Thor has to be the best character.”

I seriously can't wait to see what Waititi does with this movie! I have no doubt it's going to blow fans away. Thor: Ragnarok is in great hands, and it's set to be released on November 3rd, 2017.

For that reason, I'm sharing the knowledge with you in hopes you might send me one...or I guess make one for yourself. The video is long but thorough, and completely worth it given the price point! Hugh Jackman Has Received a Full Script for His Final WOLVERINE Movie

It's been a month since we've heard any news on Wolverine 3, and about four months since Hugh Jackman has talked about his final appearance as Wolverine. While promoting Eddie the Eagle, starring Taron Egerton, Collider was able to ask Jackman about the movie's status.

Jackman: We have a script. A full script. To tell you, two days ago I got that the full finished—well, it’s not finished, but we’re getting super close—as you can see by the rate of my facial hair. That might give you a good clue that perhaps…yeah, it’s sooner rather than later.

Egerton: Also, the pecs are expanding as well.

Jackman: I have had six meals today already.

As for when shooting might start:

Jackman: I don’t have a firm date yet. My thing and I’ve told you and I’ve told everyone, it’s my last one, for me I want it to be perfect, so the moment I know it’s perfect, bang, we’ll go.

A lot of GeekTyrant readers have been saying they want old man Logan. We'll just have to wait until the first images get released to get a clue of what the movie is about.

WTF: Joseph Fiennes Cast as Michael Jackson in Half-Hour Road Trip Comedy

$

0

With the current boycott of the Oscars due to its lack of racial diversity in nominees, it's just a dumb idea to cast white actor Joseph Fiennes to play black musician Michael Jackson; even if it's for comedy. While Jackson has been played by white actors Fred Armisen and Amy Poehler on SNL in the past, due to a combination of vitiligo and cosmetic surgeries and skin procedures to make Jackson look more like Peter Pan, even after those procedures he was still black and was been played black actors Tim Meadows, Chris Rock, and Dean Edwards on SNL; so it's entirely possible  and appropriate to still have a black actor play Jackson.

What makes this project even weirder is that it's about a reported road trip taken by Jackson, Elizabeth Taylor, and Marlon Brando shortly after 9/11 from New York to Ohio; the visual of all three of them in one car is bizarre. According to Vanity Fair it happened, but there is some dispute about whether it was real or not.

Fiennes on the yet to be named movie project:

"I got the script the other day. It’s a challenge. It’s a comedy. It doesn’t poke mean fun, but it’s a story, possibly urban legend, whereby Michael, Marlon Brando, and Liz Taylor were all together the day before 9/11 doing a concert. Airspace was shut down and they couldn’t get out and Michael had the bright idea to go to hire a car and drive.
"It’s a fun, lighthearted tongue-in-cheek road trip of what celebrity of that kind is like. But also it’s rather beautiful and poignant about their relationships as well."

I'm not even sure how to process the layers of weird and the racial quandaries this whole thing stirs up. Right now at this moment, it feels like they've crossed a line, when in the past, few people batted an eye. What are your thoughts?

Jared Hess Set to Direct NICKTOONS Crossover Movie for Nickelodeon Films

$

A few months ago it was announced that Nickelodeon Films and Paramount Pictures would be developing a live-action/animated crossover movie called Nicktoons. The film was originally pitched to the studio as “a Justice League or Avengers-esque team-up film,” but with classic characters from Nickelodeon's '90s cartoon series including Rugrats, Angry Beavers, Hey Arnold!, Rocko’s Modern Life, Doug, Ahh! Real Monsters, Ren and Stimpy, and more. The movie is sure to provide a nostalgia explosion for kids of the '90s.

According to Variety, the studio has hired Jared Hess to direct the film, which is a perfect choice. This is the guy who brought us films such as Napoleon Dynamite, Gentlemen Broncos, Nacho Libre, and more. He seems to have that strange, childlike wonder that we all enjoyed about these cartoon series, so I couldn't think of anyone better to take on the challenge of bringing them to life on the big screen.

Hess will co-write the script of the movie with his wife, Jarusha Hess. There are no plot details for the film, but it will have similarities to Who Framed Roger Rabbit? When the project was announced this is the information released:

"Naysayers ought not to fear, as our sources say that the creators have no intentions to bastardize or update the characters unfavorably, only to create a fun adventure reuniting audiences with the treasured cartoons in an exciting new approach, pleasing old fans and creating new ones. Though, creators have to tread lightly, as they run the risk of making another Rugrats Go Wild, which was an ill-received and poorly conceived crossover that just didn’t mesh."

I was excited about this when it was first announced, but after learning who's directing it, there's actually a chance that this will turn out to be a solid and entertaining flick. What do you all think about Hess taking on the challenge of making this film?
