Miley Cyrus and Elaine May Will Co-Star with Woody Allen in His New Amazon TV Series

0
0

About this time last year, word came out that prolific film writer/director Woody Allen made a deal to write and direct every episode of a new TV series for Amazon. A few months later, Allen said in an interview that he regretted making the deal and he didn't even know what a streaming service was. "I had the cocky confidence, well, I’ll do it like I do a movie…it’ll be a movie in six parts. Turns out, it’s not. For me, it has been very, very difficult. I’ve been struggling and struggling and struggling," he said. So...things weren't looking good.

But Allen has a deadline at the end of 2016, so the show must go on. Deadline reports that he's cast his leading ladies, and they're very unusual choices: Elaine May (writer/director of Ishtar, writer of The Birdcage, Heaven Can Wait, and Primary Colors) and Miley Cyrus (self-explanatory). The singer summed up her feelings about joining the project with the eloquence you'd expect from her:

Fuck yeah ! Stoked to be in Woody Allens first series!!!!! I had claimed 2016 to be my year of "chillin the fuck out" but next to my bed for a few years now has been this portrait of W.A. & I was looking into his eyes when I got the call to be apart of the cast and work alongside the bad a$$ Elaine May & da dude himself! 1960zzzz here I cummmmm 🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄

A photo posted by Miley Cyrus (@mileycyrus) on

Cyrus has been popping up all over the place lately. She appeared in The Night Before, as well as A Very Murray Christmas, and now she's jumping into an auteur-driven TV series. Since the only thing we really know about Allen's new show is that it takes place in the 1960s, Cyrus obviously won't be playing herself this time around, so it'll be interesting to see how she fits in to Allen's world and how Allen himself handles the pressure of delivering six half-hour episodes of television.

THE RAID Director Made a Badass Samurai Short Film — Check It Out!

Gareth Evans, the director of The Raid films, made a badass samurai short film that you need to watch now! Evans is easily one of the best action film directors working today, and while we wait to see what his next film will be, we are treated to this short which centers on three dueling warriors. Evans called on the cast of his previous films to star in the short, including Yayah Ruhian (The Raid, The Raid 2), Cecep Arif Rahman (The Raid 2), and Hannah Al Rashid (V/H/S 2 “Safe Haven”). It must've been fun for this team to get together again to create something so awesome. Here's the synopsis:

In a time of civil war, a young warrior is given the task of delivering a treaty between two rival lords. During her journey through the woods however, she finds herself hunted by two assassins intent on intercepting her message of peace in a bid to maintain the fear, instability and violent rule of their leader.

The director also offered some production details that tell us what went into making the movie. He explains:

The following is a test action sequence designed by Yayan Ruhian, Cecep Arif Rahman and Gareth Evans. It was designed in a bid to create choreography that maintains the style and rhythm set out in their prior work (The Raid 1&2) while staying within the parameters of a PG-13/12A audience friendly certification.

Designed in under a week, it was shot over the course of 3 days on location in Hirwaun, WALES. The short sequence was shot using a Sony NEX-7 with only the Director and Cast on location. No other crew and cast worked on this project during the shoot.

Post production was handled in-house with Gareth Evans handling the offline edit while Fajar Yuskemal and Aria Prayogi continued their collaboration by providing an instrumental score tailor made to the project that would call upon cultural elements (the mix of Japanese and Indonesian instruments) inherent in the design of the film.

They have also undertaken the recording of ADR with the cast, foley and editing all sound FX before completing a final stereo mix.

Now watch the short and enjoy! If for some reason you can't watch the embed below, click here.

China Gets Live-Action TRANSFORMERS Event From Team Behind SPIDER-MAN: TURN OFF THE DARK

0
0

A few years ago, the Broadway production Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark experienced setback after setback on its way to becoming the most expensive Broadway show of all time. Many actors were injured because of the high-flying technical stuntwork needed to pull of the Spider-Man moves, director Julie Taymor was forced out of the project, and the score (by Bono and The Edge, of U2) had to be reworked multiple times.

S2BN Entertainment, the company behind that production as well as the cancelled Marvel Experience live show, is teaming with Hasbro and Chinese company DMG to finance a live-action event in China called Transformers Live, which will be based on the Hasbro toys and presumably, to some extent, the subsequent Michael Bay movies. Deadline says the show will feature "real-life robots," and they have a quote from one of the producers:

Transformers Live will be a cross between an action-adventure spectacle, a theme park attraction and a theatrical show,” said S2BN Entertainment chairman Michael Cohl. “Fans will experience intense action, beautiful visual moments, an emotionally engaging story, lots of humor and rousing music.”

As the site points out, Bay's Transformers movies are huge in China, with Age of Extinction once holding the record for highest-grossing film in the country. I suspect if this makes enough money overseas, they'll probably bring port it over to the U.S. to try to squeeze some more cash out of it, but considering the recent track record of the people involved, you'd have to pay me to watch this thing.

The show is assumed to open in an undisclosed Chinese city sometime in 2017. Would you pay to see this if it came to your city?

New Info About ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY

0
0

We're less than a year away from a new Star Wars movie. Gareth Edwards' Rogue One: A Star Wars Story comes out in December, and at this point it's practically common knowledge that the movie involves a team of rebels who steal plans for the Death Star. Felicity Jones, Donnie Yen, Ben Mendohlson, Mads Mikkelsen, Diego Luna, Riz Ahmed, Jiang Wen, and Alan Tudyk star, and there's supposed to be an appearance by Darth Vader — which makes sense, considering this movie is a prequel to the original '77 film.

JoBlo has some new information about the movie that I'm sure fans will be interested in hearing, and while there's nothing super-spoilery here, it's still probably best if you leave now if you're worried about that kind of thing (but then why did you click on this article?).

You can read the whole report on their site, but I'll list the important aspects right here:

Stormtroopers wearing all black uniforms will appear in the film, and they're being referred to as "Death Troopers," though whether that's a designation we'll actually hear characters say aloud in the movie or if it's just what JoBlo's sources are calling them remains murky.

One of the movie's main characters is going to be a droid that works with Felicity Jones' character's group of rebels. The droid is described as being two-legged and being colored dark grey or black, with a history as an Empire droid before being repurposed to help the good guys. There's speculation that Alan Tudyk is playing this character using motion capture, but again, that's not confirmed.

AT-ATs will show up in the movie, along with a new TIE Fighter design.

One of the character's names is Cashen (spelling variations should be allowed), but they're not sure which character. We previously heard that Felicity Jones' name might be Lyra Erso, and she may be the daughter of Mads Mikkelson's character Galen, a scientist or engineer who fixes some of the flaws of the Death Star and sends his daughter on a mission to help the rebels because he feels guilty for his contributions.

And most importantly, Darth Vader will be appearing in the movie. We knew about this already, but all of the reports we've read indicated that he would have a small role in the film. JoBlo's new report says the character is "expected to have a larger role than originally thought," though they couldn't elaborate about exactly how much screen time he'll have.

What do you think about this new info? It'll be cool to see Darth Vader in live-action again — I'm guessing he'll be a cornerstone of the film's marketing campaign, with a badass reveal moment at the end of the trailer to get people excited — but I hope Lucasfilm knows what they're doing with him, because they certainly don't want to tarnish the legacy of one of cinema's coolest villains.

Kevin Smith Reveals Spoilers For His MOOSE JAWS Movie

0
0

Kevin Smith just premiered his new movie Yoga Hosers at the Sundance Film Festival, and while introducing that film, he spoke a little about the upcoming third and final film in his "True North" trilogy (movies set in Canada). Following in the wake of Tusk and Yoga Hosers, the new movie is called Moose Jaws, and it's a beat-for-beat remake of Steven Spielberg's classic Jaws — except instead of a shark, there's a killer moose on the loose. Smith has revealed that Jay and Silent Bob will make an appearance, and Silent Bob is going to be eaten by the moose, reminiscent of Quint in Jaws.

Slashfilm was in attendance at the Sundance screening when Smith gave even more spoilery info about Moose Jaws:

After reiterating the Jaws influence, Smith said that around the time he was working on the third act, he didn’t just want to copy Spielberg anymore. And instead he decided to use a bunch of other movies as inspiration. Apparently the ending of Moose Jaws is an amalgamation of Godzilla, Destroy All Monsters, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and Return of the Jedi.

Khan and Jedi could mean a lot of things, but how do those Godzilla and Destroy All Monsters references factor in? Smith also revealed that Tusk is going to show up and fight the moose in the movie. That seems like a major spoiler, doesn't it? But Smith openly revealed it to a crowd of movie-watchers, and it seems clear that he no longer cares about what the audience thinks:

“I used to want to make movies for audiences. But if you’ve seen Tusk, and after you’ve seen Yoga Hosers, you’ll see that I really don’t give a shit about the audience anymore.”

Slashfilm seems to imply that Smith wasn't being purposefully dismissive of the audience with that statement, and that he's all about making movies that he wants to make. There are a few different ways to parse that, but since I haven't liked a Kevin Smith movie in years, I don't feel like spending the energy thinking and talking about it. Smith fans and haters alike: feel free to drop your own thoughts in the comments below.

THE CHICKENING Might Be The Craziest Thing You See in 2016

0
0

Last week, I wrote about a totally bonkers remix of the Batman v Superman trailer and at the time, I thought it would be a long while before I saw anything stranger than that. I was wrong.

BirthMoviesDeath pointed me to this absolutely insane video called The Chickening, which is a riff on Stanley Kubrick's The Shining created by Nick DenBoer and Davy Force. Get a load of this (and warning — at least one shot is NSFW):

If you're still able to comprehend human communication after watching that, BMD has an interview with the filmmakers that's worth checking out in full. I'll snag a few choice lines below:

Why chicken? I grew up on a chicken farm and then worked in my dad's poultry butcher shop until I was 17, de-boning and slingin' chicken carcasses. You can't shake that shit.
My co-director Davy Force and I have been talking about doing this mega, next-level film remix for years and we finally had some free time last March to bust it out. We're both animators/vfx artists/remixers and we have collaborated on a lot of similar projects, so this came together pretty naturally. The Chickening is a proof of concept we made to pitch around to studios, namely Warner Bros (hence The Shining) in a bid to create a series where every episode is a different remixed classic film. It's a lot of fun to do and we think it's got a lot of viral potential, but obviously there's a lot of red tape in acquiring and regurgitating Hollywood's sacred cows...
There's lots you probably missed the first time through. Maybe the pictures of ISIS on the wall behind Jack in the office, or the box of chicken-flavored condoms, or the pile of Tommy Wiseau references. This thing is loaded with Easter eggs and designed to be watched a bunch of times, so you'll keep seeing new details. Kubrick was like that with all the details, too, and we think - although we sort of defaced his film - that we are still paying homage to a great piece of cinema. We wanted every still of this thing to have a WTF vibe.

The short was actually supposed to be a 22 minute project with a narrative that makes a bit more sense, but they ended up cutting it down to this version and it's been making the festival circuit. Here's the synopsis for the full piece, and you can start to see how — amid the utter insanity on display here — it could actually function as a real story.

I'm still reeling from my first viewing of this thing. What do you think?

Zack Snyder Talks About The Threat of Doomsday in BATMAN V SUPERMAN, New Empire Covers Revealed

0
0

Before we dive into the meat of this story, let's take a quick look at the two new Empire covers for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (above and below). Nothing too out of the ordinary here — basically just two more images for die-hard fans to obsess over for a minute and then add to their digital collections.

There are at least three villains that are going to pop up (or at least be hinted at) in the new movie, and one of them blasted into view at the end of the most recent trailer: Doomsday.

Director Zack Snyder spoke with Empire about including that character in the film:

"To go up against heroes like Batman and Superman, we wanted to introduce one of the DC Universe's most iconic and powerful villains. He is essentially an unstoppable force. He poses a real threat to the world within the film."

And don't forget about Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg), who Snyder says has his own mysterious motivations:

"You learn pretty early on that Lex is interested in metahuman existence, and that there might be some relationship between that investigation and the appearance of Diana Prince."

Interesting. We know Wonder Woman is pretty damn old by the time BVS takes place, and it'll be interesting to see what her relationship is to Luthor in the new movie. We'll find out when the film opens on March 25th.

Evan Peters Thinks X-MEN: APOCALYPSE Has Topped The DOFP Quicksilver Scene

0
0

One of the unquestionable highlights in Bryan Singer's X-Men: Days of Future Past was the Quicksilver scene. You know the one: Evan Peters' character was sprinting around the walls of a prison, moving so fast that everything else went into super slow motion. Peters has talked before about how he hopes to be able to do something as cool as that in the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse, and in a new interview with JoBlo, he says he thinks they've topped it:

“Yeah, I think that’s been the hardest thing,” says Peters. “Can we top it? They did such a f*cking awesome job. The special effects team is amazing… I was just a minion. They just told me what to do so I didn’t really have much to do with it but I was curious to see how they were going to top it and if they could and I think they have. I’m very excited to see it myself. I’m excited for everybody to see it because we’ve been working hard on it.”

We also know that Magneto has essentially gone off the grid and has built something of a quiet, normal life for himself when we meet up with him in Apocalypse. Peters reveals that in Apocalypse, Quicksilver knows that Magneto is his father (something that was alluded to in DOFP) and that drives a lot of his story in the new movie:

“I have learned that he's my father at this point and I am trying to … I don’t know what I can say. I'm trying to …” Peters pauses to consider his thoughts, then continues. “Yeah. It's like an adoptive child or any kind of child who has a strange father trying to … He knows who he is now so he is trying to find him. He's been searching for him. It's been 10 years and he hasn't found him and then something happens.”

I'm wondering what kind of scene Singer and his team have cooked up to top the prison break sequence in Days of Future Past. This is clearly going to be the biggest X-Men movie yet, so I'm guessing there are going to be a lot of jaw-dropping moments when it comes to the sheer scale we're going to witness here.

X-Men: Apocalypse arrives on May 27th.

UNDER THE SHADOW: Iranian Horror Film Takes on Politics and Poltergeists - Sundance Review

under-the-shadow-iranian-horror-film-takes-on-politics-and-poltergeists

Under the Shadow takes place in Tehran, Iran in 1988, right at the height of the Iran-Iraq War, which is an interesting setting for a horror film. After being denied re-entry into medical school because of her past political activity, Shideh (Narges Rashidi) finds out her husband is being sent to fight in the war, leaving Shideh and their daughter Dorsa on their own as air raids threaten to destroy their apartment and city.

After Dorsa's doll goes missing, she becomes ill and is convinced her favorite toy was taken by djinn, supernatural spirits from Arabic and Islamic mythology who are said to possess those they steal from. Shideh is, of course, skeptical of this excuse and brushes it off as a fairytale meant to scare children. All the while, the air raids are drawing closer and everyone in their apartment building leaves to escape the war, leaving Shideh and Dorsa on their own. At this point, Shideh realizes they need to get out, but if they don't find the doll, the djinn will follow Dorsa wherever they go.

While this film doesn't do anything new or unconventional in terms of horror, the combination of external and internal tension is unique. The social commentary on the events going on during this time provide insight into Shideh's development as a character. She is headstrong and independent, exhausted by being told what she can and cannot do. Her reluctance to leave her apartment is justified by her reluctance to leave the only place where she is truly independent; where, at the very least, she can wear a tank top if she wants.

I really enjoyed this film, and it reminded me a lot of The Babadook, another foreign horror film that came out a couple years ago. True horror fans may find this film tame, maybe even boring, but a casual moviegoer who likes suspense without a lot of gore should definitely give this one a shot when it hits Netflix.

Watch: First Level of SUPER MARIO BROS. Recreated on a Cake

Super Bakery Bros. is an awesome stop-motion recreation of the iconic first level of Super Mario Bros. on a spinning cake. I love the cupcake goombas, and how it looks like Mario leaps over chasms that form when someone just decided that they wanted a piece of cake. Every aspect of this looks delicious.

Lightsabers and Violins Mix in This Cool Performance of STAR WARS Music

Most people cover John Williams' iconic theme song or the Imperial March when they choose Star Wars songs to perform, but Hong Kong-based musician Jeffrey Ding He went against the grain by selecting "The Force Theme." Kudos for the creative use of lightsaber effects as the bow of his violin. You can listen to Williams' original song right here, but Jeffrey does a pretty fantastic job, so there's really no need.

Disney CEO Says Marvel Films "Will Go On Forever"

0
0

Well, Disney isn’t worried about anyone getting superhero fatigue! During a recent interview with Newsbeat, Disney CEO and Chairman Bob Iger said that Marvel’s superhero films “will go on forever.” When talking about the Marvel films he said:

"Marvel, you’re dealing with thousands and thousands of characters – that will go on forever."

So buckle up, fanboys and fangirls, because Marvel comic book movies aren’t going to stop being made. They will go on forever! I assume if people stop paying to see theskinds of movies, the studio's tune will change. But as of right now, that’s the plan!

You know what? I’m completely OK with this. I love watching Marvel films! I love taking my kids to see them. If they continue to make these movies, I’ll be able to take my freakin’ grandkids to see them! That’s kind of cool to think about.

Hopefully Marvel and Disney keep giving us fans top-notch awesome content so that they can follow through with their goal of forever Marvel movies.

Adrien Grenier's TRASH FIRE Is a Dysfunctional Family Horror Thriller - Sundance Review

0
0

So this was an unpleasantly strange movie! Trash Fire is kind of a horror mystery thriller that stars Entourage's Adrien Grenier. He plays a top-notch douchebag boyfriend and just a douchebag person in general. He is extremely offensive in his insults and outbursts. It's really quite awkward and definitely supposed to make people uncomfortable.

The movie starts with Grenier's character Owen in a therapy session with his sleeping shrink talking about how he wanted to kill himself after his parents were killed in a fire and his little sister was burned and scarred on over 80% of her body. He could never come up with the courage to go through with it, though. There are mysterious circumstances revolving around his parents' deaths, and there are strange, loud, maddening visions of fire and pain that Owen has.

The guy has some serious issues, and he is emotionally abusive to his girlfriend, Isabel. They are an extremely dysfunctional couple who should not be together, but when she gets pregnant everything is reevaluated. She doesn't want to have the baby, but one night he comes to the realization that he does and that he wants to change his life and be a father. She's kind of apprehensive about this but decides to give it a shot if he makes amends with his grandma and sister Pearl, who he hasn't seen or talked to since the funeral of his parents.

Once they get to Owen's grandma's house the whole tone of the film changes. It's almost like a separate movie. Owen warns his girlfriend that his grandma is crazier than he is, and that proves to be so true in the worst possible ways.

We learn that she emotionally abuses her Pearl, and says terrible things about her own daughter, on several occasions calling her a whore and Pearl an abomination. As hard and crazy as things get, Owen doesn't want to leave until he talks to Pearl, but she doesn't want to. All the while she stalks the eerie house at night with a shotgun.

As all of this is happening, the relationship between Owen and his girlfriend starts to get a little stronger. A part of that is because they bond over their dislike of Grandma. Owen doesn't seem as crazy when he's in this house around his grandma and Pearl. Everything else going on around him is just so creepy, it's like an intense nightmare.

Throughout the film, we learn more and more about Owen's past and the death of his parents, which he blames himself for. This is a slow burn kind of story, and everything is building up to an insane bloodbath finale.

The movie was odd, but I liked it because of its bizarre unpredictability. I never knew what was going to happen next, so it kept me on the edge of my seat. This movie isn't for everyone, but those of you who enjoy watching horror films like this might actually enjoy it.

Trash Fire was directed by Richard Bates Jr., and he's made a film that has the potential to gain a cult following. I'm sure this movie will end up on VOD and Netflix at some point.

DEADPOOL IMAX TV Spot and a New Image of the Merc With His Mask Off

Ryan Reynolds has released a new photo from Deadpool featuring the deadly, foul-mouthed antihero in a heated situation without his mask on. The photo came with the following caption, which was translated from German:

“Berlin! Finally I can see the place where David Hasselhoff destroyed the wall with his powerful voice!”

I also included an IMAX TV spot for you to enjoy. The Tim Miller-directed film is set to be released on February 12th. We're so close to the release of this film I can taste it!

Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, DEADPOOL tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

THE LURE Is a Retro Euro-Pop Flick that Flounders - Sundance Review

the-lure-is-a-retro-euro-pop-flick-that-flounders-sundance-review

In The Lure, set in 1980s Poland, a trio of musicians happens upon a pair of sister mermaids named Gold and Silver who, after seducing them with song, are taken to the sleazy nightclub where the band works with the idea that the two mermaids will sing backup and strip. Not joking. Mermaid strippers.

Needless to say (or not?) the mermaids are an instant success, and everyone falls under the spell of the two mer-sisters. During a series of catchy songs and dance numbers that'll have you singing along despite not knowing a word of Polish, the handsome young bassist becomes romantically involved with Silver, the more demure of the two. Gold, however, is less enamored by life on land and finds it increasingly difficult to contain her taste for blood.

But things begin to quickly fall apart and get exponentially more bizarre as Gold and Silver express different desires. Silver wants the anatomy of a human so her boyfriend—to put it bluntly—won't be turned off by doing it with half a fish. Gold wants to rip out people's hearts and eat them, which is no less strange, but a slightly more conventional horror trope.

All in all, this film doesn't overcome its rank subplots with random characters coming out of nowhere with confusing frequency. There's a frantic rush at the end to wrap up all the loose ends that have accumulated over the course of the film. And frankly, fish don't really turn me on as much as I think the writer was banking on. Maybe I'm alone on this one.

The Lure combines Grimm-esque storytelling with campy euro-pop in a flashy spectacle that both wows and weirds you out. If you're familiar with the original fairytale of The Little Mermaid you'll notice there are a lot of similarities and nods to mermaid folklore. But, as much as I wanted to like this movie, it was just too bizarre to hook me (Pun intended). This film certainly isn't for everyone, but if you like your mermaids a little less Disney and a little more David Lynch, then you'll definitely want to track this one down.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Gives Update on CONAN Sequel and Reveals New Title

0
0

One of my most anticipated projects for Arnold Schwarzenegger since it was announced several years ago is his Conan sequel. It's been awhile since we've heard anything about the project, and I feared it was dead because the actors box office draw isn't what it used to be. I'm happy to report that the new film project involving Robert E. Howard's badass fantasy character is still alive.

The movie was previously called The Legend of Conan, but the actor reveals that the title has gone through a change and is now called Conan the Conquerer, which is a name I can totally get behind! Conan the Conqueror was supposed to be the title of the previously planned sequel to 1987’s Conan the Destroyer. It looks like the title stuck with the actor after all these years.

Talking about the film with The Arnold Fans, Schwarzenegger talks about the basic plot of the story and what starts it:

"Conan the Conqueror, where I’m sitting on the throne for years and years - decades, and then all of the sudden, the time comes when they want to overthrow me. So that story WILL be told and that movie WILL be done."
“Yes,” as a matter of fact, it (The Legend of Conan) has been written and we are now looking for directors so this is a serious drive (now for Conan).”

The actor goes on to talk about his ability fulfill the role of Conan physically. He doesn't seem to be too concerned, though. He's confident that he's can do what he needs to do.

"One of the advantages for when you train every day, when you bicycle everyday, when you work out every day is that age is not registering in the body the same with everyone else. Because when you stay in shape, you do turn back the clock. So I feel great and the last few movies that I’ve done, I’ve done many of my own stunts. I did all the physical stuff and it didn’t wipe me out and I have plenty of energy and feel really terrific. So I am absolutely convinced that I can do the Conan movie and do the horseback riding, the sword fights and all the fighting.”

So even though Schwarzenegger is 69 years old, he's ready to take his shirt off, oil himself up, gird his loins, and kick some ass. Hopefully they hire a great director to take it on. As a huge fan of Conan, I have high hopes for this, and I believe that this is the best thing Schwarzenegger could do right now.

Check Out This Amazing Visual Effects Breakdown for THE MARTIAN

The film industry is widely known for not penny pinching at all when it comes to investing in visual effects. Ridley Scott’s The Martian is an example of well-played cards and the result of significant efforts in terms of applying CG trickery. Now MPC shares a video which contains 425 shots that rip the visual effects off The Martian.

So check out the link bellow. You may be surprised to find out what was real and what was not. Keep in mind, though, that there might be spoilers if you haven’t seen the film yet.
