This is really unfortunate. Joel Furtado's awesome fan-made animated web series X-Men: Danger Room Protocols has been shut down by the legal division of Marvel. Furtado's series, which was completely self-funded, was supposed to have 18 episodes, but now he's been forced to delete all of the videos from the web, even though he wasn't monetizing the videos. He didn't spend a year of his life working on this project to make money — he did it as a passion project, and to share his love of the X-Men (especially the 1990s animated series, obviously a huge inspiration for him) with all of the other fans out there.
I can't even begin to imagine the heartbreaking loss this must be for Furtado, who told io9 that he worked on the project seven days a week for six months straight before unveiling the first episode online. Furtado tweeted me a link to this YouTube video he put up explaining what happened:
He makes some really excellent points about why his video should be allowed to remain online, and I honestly don't understand how Marvel could take this down while leaving up some of the stuff Furtado points out in his explanation. I'm really bummed that we won't be able to see this project play out in full, because you could feel the passion in Furtado's pixeled recreations of these classic characters. Like I said, all of the videos have been taken offline, but I snagged these gifs from io9 so you can see what the show looked like if you missed its all-too-brief initial run:
He's now looking for a job, so if you're in a hiring position and looking for some stellar talent, get a hold of him at joelfurtado@hotmail.com.
