Adam Savage Recreates THE MARTIAN’s Spacesuit

Adam Savage is staying busy after filming wrapped on the last season of MythBusters. He's been working with Tested, letting them into his workshop and showcasing the props he's collected or fabricated himself. His next endeavor is replicating the spacesuit from the movie The Martian. In order to do this, he's going to need some frame of reference to work from. What better reference than the suit used in the film? Fox Studios loaned the prop to Savage so he could photograph, measure, and scrutinize each element. Afterwards, Adam will document the building process until he is wearing his own Martian spacesuit.

First Clip Released from Kevin Smith’s YOGA HOSERS Has a CLERKS Kinda Vibe

Kevin Smith’s Yoga Hosers premieres at The Sundance Film Festival this week, and in preparation for that, the writer and director has released the first clip. It introduces you to the two main characters, Colleen McKenzie and Colleen Collette, who are played by Smith's daughter Harley Quinn Smith and Johnny Depp's daughter Lily-Rose Depp. They are a couple of sophomores working behind the counter of a Manitoba convenience store, Eh-2-Zed, and the high school hottie walks in and invites them to a senior party. As you'll see, it kind of has a Clerks vibe to it.

The story centers on "two teenage yoga nuts who have an after-school job at a Manitoba convenience store called Eh-2-Zed. When an ancient evil rises from beneath Canada’s crust and threatens their big invitation to a 12th-grade party, the Colleens join forces with a legendary man hunter from Montreal named Guy Lapointe (Depp) to fight for their lives with 'all seven chakras, one Warrior Pose at a time.'"

The other cast members of the film include Michael Parks, Justin Long, Haley Joel Osment, Genesis Rodriguez, Ralph Garman and Harley Morenstein, Tony Hale, Natasha Lyonne, Austin Butler, Adam Brody, Tyler Posey, and Jason Mewes.

The film is expected to be released sometime this year.

Martial Arts Comedy Short With a GROUNDHOG DAY Twist — ROPE A DOPE 2

About two years ago we shared a must watch short film called "Rope a Dope" by Eric Jacobus (A Good Day to Die Hard) and The Stunt People. If you haven't already seen or need a refresher, you can watch it here.

Part two of the saga is just as crazy and fun as the first. While this was released a year ago, somehow we missed writing it up on GeekTyrant. Recently, we shared Jacobus recreating fighting styles of video game characters and doing over 200 different types of kicks. I hope to see more of Jacobus' action comedy stylings in a third part, which he's heavily hinted at in the comments on YouTube.

"Bloody Good" Sneak Peek at PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES

So far all the trailers for Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, while good, have leaned more toward the dramatic. This new sneak peek  that Sony is calling "Bloody Good" is high tempo and makes the whole movie feel more like a fun romp. The cast of Lily James, Sam Riley, Jack Huston, Douglas Booth, Matt Smith, and Lena Headey are just a few reasons to be excited about the movie. I can't wait to watch this period zombie action comedy, based on a book parody.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies hit theaters February 5th (USA).

10 Scenes That Didn't Make It into STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

Before Star Wars: The Force Awakens was even released, we were seeing all kinds of rumors and speculation about the story of the film. Turns out a lot of those rumors were true but never ended up in the final cut of the movie. Then after the movie was released, we learned of some additional scenes that were originally supposed to be in the movie as well.

Screen Rant has released a video that breaks out ten scenes from the movie that were originally planned but never made it into the final cut. Some of those things include Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber in space, Kylo Ren on the Millennium Falcon, a snowspeeder chase, and more.

J.J. Abrams spent months putting the finishing touches on Star Wars: The Force Awakens and didn’t lock down the final picture until November. During post-production, he had to sort through hours of footage in order to deliver a film that would please the fans. As you might expect, a lot of stuff was left on the cutting room floor. Here are 10 Star Wars The Force Awakens Scenes You've Never Seen.

First DEADPOOL Clip is All About Love and Butts, Obviously

Deadpool has some really funny trailers, TV spots, and viral videos. In its first clip, the movie features a romantic moment underlined with some butt jokes. What could have been a sappy moment is instead turned into perfectly humored one between Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) and Vanessa Carlysle (Morena Baccarin). Jokes on jokes — I can't wait to watch this movie.

Deadpool opens in theaters February 12th (USA).

SLEIGHT Is a Hero Movie That Puts Marvel and DC to Shame - Sundance Review

So far, I’ve seen some pretty fantastic films at Sundance this year, but one that I would truly recommend to anyone is Sleight. The movie stars Jacob Latimore and Seychelles Gabriel and is directed by J.D. Dillard.

It follows the story of a bright young man named Bo (Latimore) with a scholarship whose mother dies shortly after graduating. He gives up the scholarship and decides to start dealing drugs so he can help take care of his little sister. But he’s ready to give it up after meeting a cute girl and realizing the risks are becoming too great. So what’s the catch? It sounds like any other Sundance film about an inner city kid dealing drugs…. of which there are many. Well, he is a street magician. And with 5 words, this movie just became the coolest story ever!

Both Jacob and Seychelles were fantastic. They had a blossoming relationship that seemed real and interesting. Although their relationship did move a bit quicker than may be believable to some, they had moments of honesty that made their love seem likely. The real breakout actor in this film for me, however was Dule Hill. I’ve mostly seen him play a bumbling yet lovable sidekick on the TV series Psych, so when I first saw him, the last thing I expected was a violent drug dealer. And yet, he was remarkable as the charismatic yet psychopathic dealer who could flip on a dime. One moment he’d be inviting you in with a smile and then bam, punch in the face, again and again and again.

What really stood out to me, however, was that this movie kind of played out as a superhero movie with elements of a thriller that made it realistic. Bo used his sleight of hand and knowledge of street magic to help him outsmart cops, criminals, and anyone out to get him. But what this movie did right was his power wasn’t fighting. It was his wits. There was a fight scene in the movie, and it was awesome, and it didn’t require saving the world, and it wasn't overly orchestrated. As I watched this movie, I was reminded of the last few Marvel movies I’ve seen.  Now I loved them, but one issue I’ve had is that the world is always in jeopardy in them. In this movie, this kid develops a type of superpower that he uses for criminal ways but turns it around without the world being in jeopardy. The last few scenes of the film were very intense, but because of an internal struggle and different kinds of stakes than world destruction. This movie was more intense than any DC or Marvel superhero movie I’ve seen and kept me on the edge of my seat.

J.D. Dillard is a name that you should keep your eye on. I have no doubt he is a director we will be seeing more of. His ability to capture action and intensity without the overuse of special effects is truly remarkable. If you get a chance, check out this movie. It is the coolest superhero film I’ve ever seen, because it shows that there are more than one way to be a hero, and more than one way to make the stakes high.

Matt Smith on Steven Moffat's DOCTOR WHO Departure

Part of what makes Doctor Who interesting is its continued somewhat lateral evolution. Keeping a foot in the past and continuing to step into new territory sometimes has the show stomping around in a circle. But when a new Doctor or a new showrunner takes the helm, the show gets a completely different stance and new footprints.

Matt Smith, my favorite Doctor, has been promoting Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and Timey Wimey host Juliette Boland was able to ask Smith about Steven Moffat's recently announced departure from the show. Check out his response below:

New BATMAN V SUPERMAN Trailer Features Bits of New Footage

If you haven't watched any of the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice TV spots or promos, then there should be a fair bit of new footage for you in this newest trailer. But if you're like me and have watched them all, then there is nearly nothing new in this. Upside? It's not a new spoiler-filled trailer. We are officially just two months away from the release of Batman v Superman (March 25th, USA) and the hype train is at full steam. I'm fully expecting an avalanche of footage in the coming weeks, but I really hope I'm proven wrong. Less is more, movie marketers.

THE GREASY STRANGLER Was So Greasy I Slipped Out of The Movie - Sundance 2016

$

Full disclosure: I walked out of this movie after watching only 30 minutes of it. This is kind of a first impression review, an explanation of why I walked out, and a brief rant on Sundance selecting and showing shitty movies like this.

Before I begin, you need to know that I love horror movies and I thoroughly enjoy strange and insane off-beat kind of films. This movie could be described that way, but it was completely unwatchable in every way.

This movie was a waste of time and money. I can't tell you if it was a waste of talent or not, because from what I saw there was no talent involved with the creation of this...film? I don't even want to call it a film. This was just utter crap.

Five minutes into watching the movie, people were already starting to walk out of the theater. I was telling myself, "I can stick it out to the end". Why? Because I'm the kind of guy that rarely walks out of a movie. I've probably only walked out of three movies in my life, including this one. About a half hour in, I just couldn't take it anymore. I was done with it and I slipped out. I felt I had more important things to do with my time than watch this garbage.

The writer and director of this film had to have spent time in a mental institute for an extended period of time to come up with something like this. Here's the synopsis for the film:

This Los Angeles–set tale follows Ronnie, a man who runs a disco walking tour along with his browbeaten son, Brayden. When a sexy, alluring woman named Janet comes to take the tour, it begins a competition between father and son for her attentions. It also brings about the appearance of an oily, slimy, inhuman maniac who stalks the streets at night and strangles the innocent—soon dubbed “the Greasy Strangler.”

So what was it that was so bad that made me feel this way? A couple of nasty-looking mentally challenged men walking around in their underwear, the pointless shitty dialogue, characters, and story, and an old grease-loving naked man who drenches himself in gross thick grease and kills people. Just in case you were wondering, to get the oil off, the old man washes himself at a drive-through car wash while wildly laughing and then continues to walk his full-on nasty naked ass around. Nothing made sense, it was disgusting, stupidly vulgar, and a lot of the imagery literally made my stomach turn and made me want to puke.

It's hard to understand without having seen it, but I promise you, your life will be much better not having this kind of absurdity melt your mind because what you see cannot be unseen. Those visuals will be branded in your mind until the day you die.

I'm shocked and disappointed that Sundance actually accepted this film. It makes me sad that they supported this kind of utter trash. It makes me wonder how many other great film submissions were overlooked and lost out on a great opportunity because for some reason the committee decided to let this one in. I love Sundance, but they should be supporting great movies, and not stinky-ass diarrhea like this.

After I walked out, I went to grab some lunch and while waiting for a seat, I just wanted to check who it was that actually made the movie, and saw that Elijah Wood was a producer. As I looked up from my phone there was Elijah Wood eating at a table near where I was standing. I wondered why he would put his name on such utter nonsense. I didn't bother to ask, but I imagine he's one of the main reasons the film made it into the festival.

I'm sure some of you are curious to see this and somewhere down the road you'll attempt to watch it. Just remember...I told ya so!

The movie was directed by Jim Hosking and it stars Michael St. Michaels, Sky Elobar, and Elizabeth De Razzo. I'm sure there's an audience out there for this, but obviously, I'm not a part of it.

These STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS VFX Reels Are So Cool

Like many of you, I've now seen The Force Awakens enough times that I can disengage with it as a piece of entertainment and start looking at it as the tremendous challenge it was to create. J.J. Abrams had an insanely difficult job as both co-writer and director of this movie, and being able to visualize what the final film would look like and trust the VFX team to make that happen, knowing that all of the blame would fall on his shoulders if the movie sucked, put more pressure on him than the average director. This was hailed as the triumphant return of Star Wars! Luckily, the vendors and VFX artists came through, and the movie ended up being a lot of fun and visually dazzling.

io9 pointed me to these cool videos from IAMAG that break down some of the visual effects work, showing off the insane layering and texturing that the audience doesn't think twice about when we're immersed in the world of the film. The second video is really freaking cool: it shows a split-screen version of the shots as they were filmed on set alongside the completed shots we see in the movie:

And finally, Wired has a nice look at how Abrams was able to enhance Lupita Nyong'o's performance as Maz Kanata, going in-depth on the technology that was utilized to capture her facial movements and translate them into an alien character. Some of the footage is the same that appears in the first video above, but the explanation here is new:

This New Rumor About The Hulk in THOR: RAGNAROK is What Fans Have Been Wanting For Years

$

Potential spoilers ahead for Thor: Ragnarok. You've been warned.

Fans have been wanting to see Marvel Studios tackle the Planet Hulk storyline in live-action for years, and while Kevin Feige seemed somewhat open to the idea three years ago, since then we've seen people like Joss Whedon and James Gunn dismiss the idea of that storyline being worked into their films. But now it appears that Marvel has finally found a way to work that in without getting too bogged down in the extraneous story that would be needed to set that up in a solo film.

Geek.com reports that in Thor: Ragnarok, Cate Blanchett's Hela destroys Mjolnir (more on that here) and she and Loki banish Thor to "a gladiatorial planet where his head is shaved and he's forced to fight for his life." Even without Mjolnir, Thor manages to battle his way through a myriad of alien opponents, until the champion of the arena finally rolls in to take him down. Guess who? Yep, it's The Hulk.

When we reconnect with Hulk in Thor: Ragnarok, he’s managed to avoid reverting back to the Banner state since we last saw him in the Quinjet in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Hulk in Hulk form is pretty much unkillable, so he survived the trip to Sakaar (however he got there). His “Banner” is starting to seep through into the Hulk persona, and because of the Hulk-Banner melding, Hulk actually remembers Thor and his relationship to him. That’s what starts the two on a Midnight Run to the MacGuffin that Thor desperately needs.

The site does caution that the story could change by the time the movie actually begins production, but as of now, that's the plan for Thor: Ragnarok, and it certainly aligns with what Mark Ruffalo has been saying recently. What do you think? Are you excited to see this story play out, even in a truncated form in another superhero's film?

Watch: JUSTICE LEAGUE VS TEEN TITANS Sneak Peek

$

The Teen Titans have had their ups and downs in the last couple decades. They were a comic, then a really cool cartoon series, and then...Teen Titans Go. Which...is fine. But in the recent Batman Bad Blood DVD, a sneak peak of the Titans in the new animated series was released and it was pretty cool.

The new Teen Titans are similar to the Titans of the comics, but with some rather big changes.  You still have the staple Titans, like Starfire, Robin, Beast Boy, and Raven. However, the Robin of this new Teen Titans is actually Damien, and Nightwing is hanging around in a different way. Also Cyborg is technically a part of the actual Justice League, and comes to hang out with the Titans because they are closer to his age. Finally, Blue Beetle is a new member who fills in the tech shoes that Cyborg leaves behind.

The preview seems pretty cool, and goes over a classic Raven storyline — battling with Trigon.  It's a fight we've seen plenty of times before, but this new story seems to have an interesting twist. The JLA want to take Raven in to make sure Trigon is not released, and the Titans want to fight them over it. Also a plus: seeing Jon Bernthal get more villainous comic roles. He just plays dark so well. Check out the preview for more details and interviews with cast members.

UPDATE: Look like the 11min sneak peek has been taken down. Added a trailer that we hadn't posted yet.

Nightcrawler Will Be a Swashbuckler in X-MEN: APOCALYPSE

I've been a huge fan of X-Men since I was a child. My brother used to collect comics that I would often steal and read. I especially loved the series X-Caliber. It introduced some fun and interesting characters and turned Nightcrawler into a total badass. He was funny, sincere, and wielded a sabre like some kind of demonic pirate.

Well, fans of this kind of Nightcrawler will be pleased to hear that the new Nightcrawler in the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse will be a lot more like that. In a recent interview with JoBlo, actor Kodi Smit-McPhee said:

“I believe we kind of get to see the side of Nightcrawler that we love so much in the comics,” says Smit-McPhee. “The more vulnerable, swashbuckling, joyous, random, personality that we love, but also so grounded in his faith at a young age as well, as we went with the choice to still have the designs. So, it’s a mix of ideas, but uh, something that I believe is pretty faithful to what the fans enjoy and, um, something that I can kind of relate to as well, so…”

This is so exciting to hear. Personally, I loved Alan Cumming's portrayal of Nightcrawler in X-Men 2, but one thing I always thought that was missing was more of the swordplay and swashbuckling. We'll have to see the movie to see how much of that ends up in the final film. Check out the full interview at JoBlo for more info on Nightcrawler and many other of the characters of X-Men: Apocalypse, which arrives in theaters on May 19th.

New LABYRINTH Movie Coming From GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Co-Writer

$

The Hollywood Reporter ran a story a couple of days ago saying that the David Bowie classic Labyrinth was getting a reboot from Guardians of the Galaxy co-writer Nicole Perlman. Now Perlman — who wrote the initial draft of Guardians while she was in Marvel's in-house writing program before James Gunn apparently revamped the script — has taken to Twitter to dispel any notions that this new project will be a remake or reboot:

I agree that the timing is incredibly unfortunate, because now it seems like this project is only moving forward because of the recent death of original star David Bowie. But as you can see, Perlman seems to have a lot of respect for the property and doesn't seem to be planning on creating a straight-up remake; her insistence that this version isn't a reboot either means it's a continuation of the first film's story, or something that only vaguely touches on the first film's themes and worlds — anything too close would be considered a remake. No word yet if original star Jennifer Connelly is involved, but it would be cool to see her again if the script turns out well.

Perlman is also co-writing Marvel Studios' upcoming Captain Marvel movie along with Inside Out screenwriter Meg Lefauve.

Darth Vader Delivers 3D Printed Arm to a Child in Need

Whoever said the Empire was evil obviously had no idea about all the charity work they do in their spare time. To Alvin Flores, the Empire are real heroes.

Flores was delivered a 3D printed arm made by Limbitless, and delivered by The Dark Lord of the Sith himself — well, at least the 501st Legion's version of him. The 501st Legion's Central Garrison which serves Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota, arrived and delivered the arm to the fourth grade student and even let him fist bump.

It's always great to see there is good in the world, despite all the bad. Last year Limbitless did a similar thing when Robert Downey Jr. delivered an arm to a young boy.  However, I find it especially ironic that this year, Vader, well known for his hand being chopped off, is the one to make the delivery. Still a very cool thing to happen, and it makes me feel good to live in this world. Check out the full news report below.

THE X-FILES' Return To Television Doubles Viewership of Original Pilot

$

The X-Files returned to television last night on Fox and pulled in nearly double the viewership it had when it premiered in 1993. Last night, Forbes reports an estimated 13.5 million watched the show according to early estimates, and many believe that's a conservative estimate — meaning the official numbers will be higher when all has been taken into account. (Only 7.9 million tuned in to the series premiere over twenty years ago.) The super impressive part is that with delayed viewings, last night's viewership could match the ticket sales of the 1998 X-Files movie, which ran near the show's height of popularity!

It's super good news to hear, but I'm not convinced the hype will last. I read the original reviews citing immense boredom in the show's opening, and heard my in-laws mutter the same complaint about halfway through last night's premiere. They'll stick with it probably, but I can't imagine everyone will.
