RESIDENT EVIL: RETRIBUTION - 2 TV Spots and a Featurette

$

Screen Gems has released two new TV spots and a behind the scenes featurette for Paul W.S. Anderson's Resident Evil: Retribution. This is the fifth installment of the franchise, and hopefully the last. As much as I've enjoyed watching some of these movies, it's time for Milla Jovovich to hang up the tight leather outfit, even though she looks great in it. Maybe she just needs to find another franchise that she can wear it in.

The movie is set to open up in 3D, 2D and IMAX 3D theaters on September 14th, and it also stars Michelle Rodriguez, Sienna Guillory, Kevin Durand, Shawn Roberts, Colin Salmon, Johann Urb, Boris Kodjoe and Li Bingbing.

Are you looking forward to watching this next instalment of the franchise?

Here's the Synopsis:

The Umbrella Corporation’s deadly T-virus continues to ravage the Earth, transforming the global population into legions of the flesh eating Undead. The human race’s last and only hope, ALICE (Milla Jovovich), awakens in the heart of Umbrella’s most clandestine operations facility and unveils more of her mysterious past as she delves further into the complex. Without a safe haven, Alice continues to hunt those responsible for the outbreak; a chase that takes her from Tokyo to New York, Washington, D.C. and Moscow, culminating in a mind-blowing revelation that will force her to rethink everything that she once thought to be true. Aided by newfound allies and familiar friends, Alice must fight to survive long enough to escape a hostile world on the brink of oblivion. The countdown has begun.

THE AVENGERS Reimagined as Sengoku Samurai Heroes

Artist Alex Mitchell has taken the characters from The Avengers, and given them an awesome samurai style makover. The art was inspired by the the Sengoku period also known as the Warring States period in Japanese history. It was a time of social upheaval, political intrigue, and nearly constant military conflict that lasted  from the middle of the 15th century to the beginning of the 17th century.

These are all incredibly cool, and I love that S.H.I.E.L.D. is staffed by ninjas and spymasters! That should be part of Joss Whedon's new TV series. Check out the cool series of art below and hit us up in the comments! What's your favorite character re-design?

Iron Man is reimagined as 'Tetsu-jin'.

Tetsuya Suzaku was born into a rich and powerful merchant family (though they had bought their way into a samurai house some years back). The Suzaku family owned mining interests as well as a variety of businesses that utilized the resources those mines produced. Weapons and armor were of particular interest to the brilliant young heir to the family name, and he voraciously studied the latest designs and barbarian technologies.

The fame and fortune of the Suzaku name increased due to his early adoption of new techniques and innovations. His personality and lifestyle ballooned with success, and his wild behavior led to a rift in the Suzaku family. A bloody attempt by a family faction to kidnap Tetsuya and force him reveal his new gunpowder formula forced him to change his outlook. He escaped the mine he was held in by building a suit of armor and weapons from strange materials he found in the mine depths.

Now he fights for his own philosophy of justice with a razor keen wit and the latest advancements in arms and armor.

Thor is reimagined as 'Raijin'.

Born of Izanami and Izanagi, Raijin is a powerful god of storms and thunder. He was sent down to Earth in human guise to stop the destruction waged by his brother, Kagu-tsuchi, god of fire and devastation.

Raijin has godlike strength and durability, and he wields a whirling manriki (meteor hammer variant) to frightening effect. He is good-natured and kind to mortals, but quick to anger and exceedingly stubborn.

He searches the islands of Japan to put an end to his brother's plans to sow chaos in the human world.

The Hulk is reimagined as 'Kaibutsu'.

Nobu Tsubana was a promising young onmyouji in the court of a powerful lord. When news spread of a terrible demon making trouble in the land, Tsubana was among those dispatched to exorcise it. The encounter with the mighty oni went awry, proving too much for any of the sorcerers and priests to handle, and Tsubana was forced to seal the creature inside his own body as a last resort.

Now Tsubana lives as a wandering outcast, for the demon within him will wake if he does not constantly keep his emotions controlled. When the oni stirs within him, he loses his grasp on his sanity as his body and mind both grow more monstrous. He uses meditation and specially prepared seals to keep himself from transforming into a monster.

Now he travels the roads of Japan, applying his skills as an onmyouji where they are needed, and battling fearsome youkai and kami attracted by the strong spiritual presence of the slumbering demon. Needless to say, only a fool would provoke his ire.

Captain America is reimagined as 'Taishou'.

Shin Raijou was a sickly child of a low-level samurai bureaucrat, and was confined to his bed for much of his early years. He might have lived out his life in anonymity if he hadn't been present for a martial arts demonstration by a master swordsman. The young boy was enthralled, and afterwards begged the swordsman to take him on as a pupil.

The master refused, but Raijou went to his house where he found employment as a servant. He performed household chores faithfully for two years before finally being accepted as the old master's only student. He studied diligently, and his innate martial talent was revealed. After teaching all he knew, the old man was killed as the result of anti-bakufu treachery.

Raijou would spend the next decade as a soldier in the long and bloody unification conflict, distinguishing himself time and again as a sword prodigy and tactical genius. After the final battle, he disappeared, leaving the battlefield behind. He spent several years in solitude but now he's found a new sort of battle, to protect the people of the land and the honor of Japan.

Raijou favors a peculiar style of fighting that incorporates a steel-reinforced parasol. It sometimes serves as a non-lethal alternative to a sword, and sometimes is used in tandem with a sword.

Loki is reimagined as 'Kagami'.

The man known as Kagami is truly the god of fire, Kagu-tsuchi, youngest son of the gods Izanagi and Izanami. His birth was difficult and his mother died. In a blind rage his father struck off the child's head.

Being a divine personage, Kagu-tsuchi recovered. However, he thereafter held a burning grudge in his heart against his father and all of Creation. When the opportunity presented itself, he stole the sacred mirror and used its power to transmit himself to the mortal world. There he used tricks and godly magics to sow chaos, using the mocking pseudonym Lord Kagami (a name which means 'mirror', but is written as 'fire god').

The gods elected to send Kagu-tsuchi's older brother Raijin after him to put an end to his brother's plot of destruction. The two siblings are destined to clash in a battle between immortals that will rage across the islands of Japan.

'Kumo' is the code-name for the deadly ninja spy, Natsuko Iruma. Iruma was raised from birth in a brutal shinobi clan. She was trained to be an expert kunoichi, willing to kill or die at command. She was eventually assigned to infiltrate the court of the Shogun to destroy the shogunate from the inside.

The man known as 'Takajyou' was born Kin Obata. Obata was an orphan from a remote region of Japan, raised by bandits. His archery skills are without equal, easily able to fire off several shots at great range with pinpoint accuracy. He was the leader of a small gang until the day he was defeated and recruited by the spymaster of the Tate-ryuu.

It was here that Iruma came to the attention of the mysterious leader of the shogun's secret guard. Impressed with her superb skills, Iruma was given the option of joining. Fighting years of conditioning, she agreed to join, in large part due to her budding relationship with a fellow recruit, Takajyou.

Both now work for the fearsome Tate-ryuu, living and fighting in the shadows.

Will Smith's Biblical Vampire Cain and Able Story gets Greenlit

Sony Pictures has officially given Will Smith's film, The Redemption of Cain, the greenlight. The film puts a vampire twist on the legendary biblical story of Cain and Abel. Vampire and Bible stories are big in Hollywood right now, so I guess mixing the two together means this will be an instant success! Yeah, we'll see.

This will be Smith's first time directing a film, and it's scheduled to start shooting in July of 2013 from a script written by Caleeb Pinkett. Smith will most likely end up starring in it as well.

The original story follows Cain, who was a crop farmer, and his younger brother Abel, who was a shepherd. Cain committed the first murder when he killed his brother after God rejected his offerings of produce but accepted Abel's sacrifice "from the firstborn of his flock and from their fats." God curses Cain to walk the earth for eternity, and that's where the Vampire twist will come into play.

I'm curious to see how good of a director Smith will be. This is an interesting story for him to tell, do you think it will turn out being good?

New Trailer for Sean Penn's THIS MUST BE THE PLACE

A new trailer has been released for Sean Penn's crazy weird film This Must Be The Place. When I say crazy and weird, I don't mean it in a good way. This is probably one of the worst films I've ever seen, and I don't recommend wasting your time with it. Watching a trailer is as far as you should go, just to fulfill your curiosity.

Here's what Ben had to say in a review he wrote for it while up at Sundance,

Sean Penn takes on this bizarre affectation that reminds me of a grandmother: pasty white skin, bright lipstick, a weirdly high-pitched titter of a laugh, and long (and I mean LONG) pauses in between words. The film runs 118 minutes, but feels like an eternity; if he had spoken at a normal rate, it could have easily been over in 90 minutes. Non-sequiturs abound, and the transitions from location to location are awkwardly handled and never smoothly executed. The entire movie hinges on the audience investing in his character, but I found him utterly insufferable from beginning to end.

The film also stars Frances McDormand, Harry Dean Stanton and Judd Hirsch. Here's the synopsis:

Cheyenne, a wealthy former rock star (Penn), now bored and jaded in his retirement embarks on a quest to find his father’s persecutor, an ex-Nazi war criminal now hiding out in the U.S. Learning his father is close to death, he travels to New York in the hope of being reconciled with him during his final hours, only to arrive too late. Having been estranged for over 30 years, it is only now in death that he learns the true extent of his father’s humiliation in Auschwitz at the hands of former SS Officer Aloise Muller – an event he is determined to avenge. So begins a life-altering journey across the heartland of America to track down and confront his father’s nemesis. As his quest unfolds, Cheyenne is reawakened by the people he encounters and his journey is transformed into one of reconciliation and self discovery. As his date with destiny arrives and he tracks down Muller, Cheyenne must finally decide if it is redemption he seeks.

After watching the trailer let us know if you want to see the movie or not. The movie comes out on November 2nd.

You still may think Danny Boyle did an alright job, but there's no denying that Stephen Hawking teaming up with rave pioneers Orbital at the Paralympics opening ceremony is indeed epically geek. In an opening statement about the Large Hadron Collider, Hawking is backed by awesome ambience of sound which bursts into an explosive routine that's awesome and well worth your time. A new trailer has been released for the Francis Ford Copolla-produced film On The Road, directed by Walter Salles. This looks like a really interesting coming of age period road trip movie. It's got a solid cast, and I'm looking forward to seeing it.

The film is an adaptation of the book from Jack Kerouac, and it has a great cast that includes Garrett Hedlund (Tron Legacy), Sam Riley (13), Kristen Stewart (Twilight), Amy Adams (The Fighter), Kirsten Dunst (Spider-Man), Viggo Mortenson (LOTR) and more.

Here's the Synopsis:

Dan is extremely charming and has a flexible moral code, and is as fascinated by Sal's obsession with writing as Sal is by the unfettered freedom of his lifestyle. The two men spend intense nights of drinking, dreaming of another world, and forming a friendship that will take them on a trip across America. After staying at Bull Lee’s place in Louisiana, Sal, Dean, and Marylou continue traveling - naked and utterly enjoying themselves.

The movie is set to be released on December 21st. Watch the trailer and let us know if you'll be checking this one out in theaters! If you've read the book, does this movie look like a good representation of it?

When they capture one of the clan’s inner circle, Ma-Ma overtakes the compound’s control center and wages a dirty, vicious war against the Judges that proves she will stop at nothing to protect her empire. STAR WARS - Hooded Stormtrooper Bathrobe

If you were ever wondered what would happen if a Jedi robe hooked up with Stormtrooper armor and they had a baby, this definitely wouldn't be it. Clothes can't mate... yet. I did always imagine though, that Stormtroopers totally just showered in their armor, or at least kept the helmet on. Is that weird? This robe would be a good slap to the face to any Stormtrooper who finally gets out of the armor and goes on vacation and checks into the hotel, only to realize that this is the bathrobe the hotel provides.

Enough blabbering. This white cotton robe will set you back $69.99, and is now available for pre-order with shipping slated for September. That's tomorrow!

New Details Emerge About Spike Jonze's Latest Film HER

$

Spike Jonze is a pretty polarizing filmmaker. It seems that those who saw his version of Where The Wild Things Are either loved it or hated it, and now the director is back with another full length feature after dabbling in the world of shorts. (Short films, not short pants. Because that would be weird.)

Word on the street was his new movie would be about a man who fell in love with a Siri-like voice, and now Annapurna Pictures' website (via The Playlist) has released an official synopsis:

In the not so distant future, Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix), a lonely writer purchases a newly developed operating system designed to meet the user's every needs. To Theordore's surprise, a romantic relationship develops between him and his operating system. This unconventional love story blends science fiction and romance in a sweet tale that explores the nature of love and the ways that technology isolates and connects us all.

Sounds pretty good to me, and definitely right up Jonze's alley. As the synopsis said, Joaquin Phoenix is starring in the film, and his co-stars will be Amy Adams, Olivia Wilde, and Rooney Mara. An eclectic group to be sure, but also one that should fit well in Jonze's stylized world.

Plus, our friends at The Film Stage tracked down the working title for the movie, which had previously been shrouded in mystery. It's apparently going by the name Her. Short and sweet. Sound off in the comments and let us know if you're looking forward to Jonze's newest feature!

Third HOBBIT Film gets a Title and Release Date!

The recently announced third film in Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy will be called The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and that it will be released on July 18th, 2014! I can't wait to see this awesomness!

Here's the full Press Release:

Warner Bros. Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures jointly announced today that the final film in Peter Jackson's trilogy adaptation of the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien, now titled The Hobbit: There and Back Again, will be released worldwide on July 18, 2014. All three films in the trilogy are productions of New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures.

The Studios also announced the title of the second installment in the franchise, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, which will be released on December 13, 2013. The first film in the trilogy, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, opens this holiday season, on December 14, 2012. Shot in 3D 48 frames-per-second, the trilogy of films will be released in High Frame Rate (HFR) 3D, other 3D formats, IMAX and 2D.

Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures, stated, "We wanted to have a shorter gap between the second and third films of 'The Hobbit' Trilogy. Opening in July affords us not only the perfect summer tentpole, but fans will have less time to wait for the finale of this epic adventure."

Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, President of International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures, added, "'The Hobbit: There and Back Again' will be an action spectacle and an emotional conclusion for this already much-anticipated trilogy. Opening in the summer will maximize playability for what promises to be an event film for fans the world over."

From Academy Award-winning director Peter Jackson, the trilogy of films is set in Middle-earth 60 years before "The Lord of the Rings," which Jackson and his filmmaking team brought to the big screen in the blockbuster trilogy that culminated with the Oscar-winning The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

The screenplay for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the first film in the trilogy, is by Fran Walsh & Philippa Boyens & Peter Jackson & Guillermo del Toro. Jackson is also producing the films, together with Carolynne Cunningham, Zane Weiner and Fran Walsh. The executive producers are Alan Horn, Toby Emmerich, Ken Kamins and Carolyn Blackwood, with Boyens and Eileen Moran serving as co-producers.

Under Jackson's direction, all three movies are being shot in digital 3D using the latest camera and stereo technology. Additional filming, as with principal photography, is taking place at Stone Street Studios, Wellington, and on location around New Zealand.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and the two remaining films in the trilogy are productions of New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, with New Line managing production. Warner Bros. Pictures is handling worldwide theatrical distribution, with select international territories as well as all international television licensing, being handled by MGM.

Set Photos for Darren Aronofsky's NOAH

Black Swan director Darren Aronfsky is currently shooting his biblical epic Noah, and we've got a collection of photos from the set of the film. The photos give us our first look at Logan Lerman and Madison Davenport in full costume. Lerman plays one of Noah’s sons, Ham, and Davenport plays Ham’s wife. The photos also give us an idea of how big this movie is going to be. This looks like it's going to be different from any other biblical film we've seen before, but that's exactly what I expected from Aronosfsky.

Russell Crowe plays Noah in the film who is a prophet that recieves a revelation from God to build an ark to survive a flood that will wipe out the coorupted planet, because it can't go on in its current wicked state. The cast also includes Emma Watson, Jennifer Connelly, Emma WatsonAnthony Hopkins and Ray Winstone

Here's a description of the film from a script review posted on HitFix:

Sure, the basic broad strokes of the story are pretty evident.  Noah hears the voice of God warning him that the world cannot be allowed to survive in the corrupted, ruined form Noah sees around him.  It is a violent, freaky, scary world that Aronofsky and his co-writer Ari Handel have created.

There is a sincerity from the very first page that will make it hard for people to argue with Aronofsky's intent here.  He's written this as a serious look at our place on this planet and our rights as citizens of the world.  I think it would be hard to pin this version of the story down to any one faith, and in shaking off the dusty respectability of the accepted version of the story, Aronofsky and Handler may have actually found a way to give it a stronger thematic resonance than I would have imagined.

There will also be 11-foot-tall fallen angels with six arms and no wings, and they will have a major presence in the script. These angels are called Watchers, and they sound absolutley fascinating. I can't wait to see these angles brought to life on the big screen. I'm sure this movie is going to turn out to be quite an awesome experience.

Check out the photos and you can see the previously released photo of Crowe as Noah here. The movie is set to be released on March 28th, 2014.

ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT Season 4 is Act One of the Movie!

$

The fourth season of Arrested Development is currently shooting, and it's hard to convey the incredible excitement and anticipation that I feel. I honestly can't believe it's happening, but it is! And in the near future we'll all be able login to our Netflix accounts, sit back and enjoy all ten episodes at once!

In a recent interview between Vulture and the show's creator Mitch Hurwitz it was revealed that these ten episode will serve as the first act of a movie that everyone wants to do. When asked if this fourth season would be a farewell to the characters or the beginning of a new chapter he said,

The episodes are an outgrowth of the design of what we hope will be the movie. They precede it. They function as an act one of a movie that we all want to do, but haven't "sold" yet. The episodes take the audience through the experiences of the characters since the family "fell apart" and how they're brought together to deal with their new problems. I would give you a hint as to what those problems are, but, really, why rob the fans of being disappointed when they see it on Netflix.

I don't see why a movie wouldn't happen! I would be shocked and disapointed with the Hollywood system... more than I already am. Hurwitz went on to talk about a few other things saying,

Because of the nature of the new series — it's almost an anthology version of the show with each episode focusing on a particular character and where they've been since the family fell apart six years ago — we didn't really have many of our principal characters together until the twelfth or thirteenth day of shooting.

We also previously heard that there might end up being more than ten episodes in the season, when asked about that he said,

Our initial order is for ten, but the beauty of Netflix is that we theoretically have an opportunity to provide more material for them. We're definitely shooting some special material just for them. But their whole outlook completely mirrors the ambitions of this show. [Netflix chief content officer] Ted Sarandos and I have really spent a lot of time finding the ideal way to tailor the show to their platform and I think we have something that embraces the new medium. When we did the show the first time we were just out ahead of the technology. I was doing a show that was all about re-watchability before there was technology that really provided that opportunity — before DVRs, etc. In fact, the first season we didn't know for sure if they would release us on DVD. So in retrospect it was more than audacious, it was "foolish." But this time we're going to be way out in front of the next trend, unless, and this is a longshot, it ends up being "reading it off paper."

Then there's the fact that this time around the creative team isn't really held back by any network standards. They can bascially do whatever they want with the show and not worry about cutting loose and getting crazy if they want to. When asked about this, and if the show would contain cussing or have dirty jokes he explained,

No, we're doing it as tastefully tasteless as we always have I guess. And there are still standards you can't violate. For instance I can't say "Joe Adalian is a (SENTENCES OMITTED)" unless I can actually prove what you and I both know I know.

It's good to know they will still be keeping that same kind of "tastefully tasteless" humor. It's going to be a glorious day when season four is available to watch! Now all they need is a studio to back the movie up!

Video editor Kees van Dijkhuizen has created a great new retrospective video that focuses on the Harry Potter movie franchise. We've featured several of Dijkhuizen's video edits over the years, and this is a wonderful addition. It captures everything we love about the Harry Potter series. Here's a note from the creator:

One of the greatest tales of our time, Harry Potter has enchanted us all with wit, courage and magic. Relive the greatest moments of the brilliant film series with 'Mischief Managed', an epic retrospective with original music from the films. The magic lives on!

Without the films, we'd never have been able to experience John Williams's Hedwig's Theme, Stuart Craig's Hogwarts or Daniel Radcliffe's Harry. We'd never have been able to meet in the theatre and say goodbye to Harry last year during all those packed midnight screenings. It may be over, but like J.K. Rowling said; whether you come back by page or by the big screen, Hogwarts will always be there to welcome you home.

One of the crazy things about this film series is that we were able to literally watch these characters and the actors that played them grow up on screen. Enjoy the video and let us know what your favorite Harry Potter movie is!
