Comics Holiday Buyer's Guide 2015

$

You’ve still got some time to stack a few more presents underneath the tree, so if you’re looking for some help in making the comic fan in your life a happy camper, I got you covered. Feast your eyes on our Holiday Comic Buyers Guide.

Superheroes

For those who prefer capes and cowls, there is a plethora to choose from this year. Many heroes saw themselves revitalized, such as Captain America, Starfire, Black Widow, and Grayson. If you want something a little different, maybe give Dark Horse’s Zodiac Force, or Marvel’s Hawkeye, or Image's Starlight a chance. Happen to be in the mood for some humor? Check out Spider-Woman, Batgirl, or Nova for some lighthearted adventuring. Of course, you could always just pick up the latest run of Uncanny X-Men and be good to go, but maybe I'm a bit biased.

Picks Include: Spider-Woman, Batgirl, Hawkeye, Grayson, Starlight, Starfire, Nova, Black Widow, Zodiac StarForce, Captain America, Uncanny X-Men.

Family Friendly

At the moment there is a glut of books geared towards adults, or at least young adults. The good news is there is still some great picks for the age-conscious parent. Titles like Jedi Academy, Gotham Academy, My Little Pony, Scooby Doo Team Up, and Groot take familiar characters and gear them towards any age group. Meanwhile other books like Gronk, Cleopatra in Space, Bone, Moon Girl, and Devil Dinosaur offer something a bit different for the adventurous reader.

Picks Include: My Little Pony, Jedi Academy, Gotham Academy, Avatar The Last Airbender: The Rift, The Promise, The Search, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, Scooby Doo Team Up, Cleopatra In Space, Bone, Gronk, Groot.

Fantastic Fiction

To say this was the year that non-superhero books pretty much defined comics would not be a stretch. Titles like The Walking Dead, Sixth Gun, and Rat Queens have become as synonymous with readers as stalwarts like Batman and The Avengers. There is something for pretty much every type of reader, and even for longtime fans, there is a book to expand your field of vision for the hobby. Maybe give something like Trick r’ Treat: Day of the Dead or Krampus: Shadow of Saint Nicholas a try? If you’re a fan of video games, Dragon Age Magekiller or Tomb Raider might be right up your alley. Looking for something a bit on the unique side? Try Mouse Guard, Rat Queens, or The Adventures of 19XX. You aren’t going to run out of great books anytime soon.

Picks Include: Mouse Guard, Walking Dead, Sixth Gun, Star Wars (Marvel), Chew, Tomb Raider, Rachel Rising, Krampus, Trick R’Treat,  Dragon Age Magekiller, Rat Queens, Wayward,The Adventures of 19xx, Black Sad.

Kick Ass Leading Women

Another milestone of 2015 is the sheer amount of fantastic female led books currently on the shelves. Some of these have been mentioned before, but another mention isn’t going to hurt anyone. Books like Lumberjanes, Black Canary, Molly Danger, Papergirls, Ms. Marvel, and Mighty Thor are some of the best books out there, and deserve to be spotlighted. While we still have a way to go in how women are depicted in comics in general, the books I mentioned above are a huge step in the right direction.

Picks Include: Lumberjanes, Spider-Gwen, Ms.Marvel, Mighty Thor, All New Wolverine, Black Canary, Rocket Girl, Molly Danger, Saga, Paper Girls, DC Bombshell

Classics

These stories are stalwarts of the genre (with some personal favorites thrown in for good measure. It is my list after all). You really can’t go wrong here, and even if someone has read them before, they will still enjoy adding it to their bookshelf.

Picks Include: All Star Superman, New Frontier, Batman Year One, Preacher, Annihilation (Marvel), 52, Green Lantern Rebirth, Age of Apocalypse, Kingdom Come, Blankets, Civil War, X-Men Messiah Complex, Strangers in Paradise,

Well, that's my list! Of course as always, these are just my picks, so if you are feeling adventurous, always be open to trying something different. You just might find a new classic.

SUPERGIRL May Fight Bizzaro-Girl, and This is What She Could Look Like

Boss Logic has created this sweet piece of fan art that shows us what Melissa Benoist from Supergirl would look like as Bizzaro-Girl.

According to executive producer Andrew Kreisberg, there is a Bizzaro character that will be coming to the Supergirl series. He doesn't specify which Bizzaro character it would be, but it's safe to assume it will be Bizzaro-Girl. TV Line reports:

"Kreisberg did not specify which “Bizarro” he was speaking of, but the smart money is on it being Bizarro-Girl, a denizen of Htrae/Bizarro World who boasts many of the same powers as Supergirl, though sometimes in reverse (e.g. freeze vs. heat vision)."

That will make a fun fight to watch! Supergirl has been a really great series so far, and it returns January 4 on CBS.

Amusing DEADPOOL TV Spot With New Footage and 2 New Photos of Colossus

The first TV spot for Deadpool has been released! It's called "Super" it features some great new footage from the film along with some funny snarky dialogue from the Merc With a Mouth. I've also included two new photos have been released from Tim Miller's upcoming Deadpool, and they both feature Colossus. The images come from EW, who confirms that Serbian actor Stefan Kapicic will be providing the voice for the character, who was physically portrayed in the movie by stuntman Andre Tricoteux.

Fans seemed really happy with what they saw of the character in the first trailer for the film. I'm sure we'll see a lot more of it in the upcoming trailer coming on Christmas day. Kapicic talked about this new version of Colossus, saying:

“Tim Miller’s idea of Colossus was to be bigger and stronger than everyone else. So for the motion capture they needed an extremely tall man. I’m 6-foot-4, but he wanted Colossus to be over 7 feet, so they used a stunt double to recreate his height, and he did very good job there. Tim also wanted Colossus to sound as close as possible to the comic book character’s background, so he had me to come in, since my voice was what he envisioned for Colossus, who has an authentic Russian accent. My character’s voice gives him the past history as Piotr Rasputin once you hear him speak. This made him the most authentic to the original idea of the comic book character.”

It'll be fun to see Colossus team up with Deadpool in this movie. I'm sure the filmmakers had a lot of fun bringing him to life.

Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, Deadpool tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

Ryan Reynolds stars in the film alongside T.J. Miller as Weasel, Gina Carano as Angel Dust, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Morena Baccarin as Copycat and Ed Skrein as Ajax.

The movie will be released on February 12th, 2016

Fun MOVIE TITLE DRUG DEAL Short Film Uses 160 Movie Titles as Dialogue

The Fine Brothers have released a really fun short film called Movie Title Drug Deal. They made the film with Poykpac, and what makes it so great is that all of the dialogue used to propel the story forward was written using only the titles of movies. They used the titles of 160 films to tell this story. I think you'll all get a kick out of this.

It's hard to believe that it has been about 10 years since Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code was brought to life for the big screen by Tom Hanks and Ron Howard. That film was followed by an adaptation of Angels & Demons, and now we have our first look at the next chapter of the story, Inferno. New photos give us our first look at Hanks, Felicity Jones, and Sidse Babett Knudsen in the film. Here's the synopsis:

Harvard professor of symbology Robert Langdon awakens in an Italian hospital, disoriented and with no recollection of the past thirty-six hours, including the origin of the macabre object hidden in his belongings. With a relentless female assassin trailing them through Florence, he and his resourceful doctor, Sienna Brooks, are forced to flee. Embarking on a harrowing journey, they must unravel a series of codes, which are the work of a brilliant scientist whose obsession with the end of the world is matched only by his passion for one of the most influential masterpieces ever written, Dante Alighieri’s The Inferno.

The movie also co-stars Omar Sy, Irrfan Khan, and Ben Foster. Inferno opens in theaters on October 14th, 2016.

Lawrence Kasdan on The New STAR WARS Trilogy Ending and The "Crazy Different" Han Solo Movie

$

Lawrence Kasdan is one of the true masterminds behind the Star Wars franchise. He co-wrote The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. He's also currently writing the Han Solo spinoff film that's in development.

During an interview with the LA Times, Kasden talked about the saga and revealed that he doesn't know how exactly the trilogy he started with Abrams will end. The interview was conducted back in October, but the interview was just released.

When asked if he and Abrams had mapped out the next chapters in the saga while collaborating on the film's script, Kasdan revealed:

"Not really. ['The Force Awakens'] sets up a lot of stuff. There’s a lot of people to deal with. And Rian took on that job and he’s going to change it, because he’s Rian. And I’m sure Colin will change what Rian does."

When talking about Rian Johnson and Colin Trevorrow taking over the next two film in the saga, Kadan previously said:

"These movies will all be so different. [Episode VIII director] Rian Johnson is a friend of mine — he's going to make some weird thing. If you've seen Rian's work, you know it's not going be like anything that's ever been in Star Wars. You couldn't have three more different people than J.J., Rian and [Episode IX director] Colin [Trevorrow]. Those movies will have the Star Wars saga as their basis, but everything else will be different. Then Phil Lord and Chris Miller are going to make the Han Solo film and I can't guess what that will be like — and I'm writing it!"

At the time he had no idea where this new trilogy would take these new characters, but he probably has a better idea now that Johnson has completed his script for Episode VIII that the producers and actors have already read. Kasdan went on to say:

"We talked about [the ending] -- and there’s a certain thing that people who are involved with it feel should happen. There’s a kind of movement that happens. But it's not in your control. It’s going to veer off with Rian, and it’s going to veer off another way with Colin."

I guess we'll just have to wait and see what that "certain thing" he mentions is. The writer goes on to talk about the Han Solo film he's working on and talks about its directors, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, and how they are going to make something different:

“Those guys are geniuses in their own right, and they did something with ‘The Lego Movie’ that no one had ever seen. I think the Han movie is going to be crazy different, and I haven’t got a clue what it will be. We’re so far from putting it on film.”

While talking about the Han Solo movie in a separate interview with Empire Film Podcast (via MakingStarWars.net), Kasdan tells fans not to be worried. This isn't going to be your typical origin film.

“I think it won’t be the thing you’re worried about. It will not be like here is where he was born and this is how he was raised. I think what it will be is what was he like ten years earlier, ya know maybe a little earlier you’ll get a glimpse but…what formed the person we meet in the cantina? It is not so much about his specific history. It is about what makes a person like that? He’s not full formed in the cantina! Kurosawa once said ‘the heroes are the ones that are still changing and the villains are locked and petrified into what they are’ and Harrison embodies in Force Awakens someone that’s still not settled on who he is.”

It sounds like the film is going to focus on some major developments in Solo's life that made him the man he became. With Kasden spearheading the writing process and Lord and Miller helming the film, I'm confident that they'll make sure fans get a film that won't ruin the character that we've loved all these years.

The Han Solo spin-off is set to be released on May 25th, 2018.

When it comes to art and design for the 2015 geek holiday season, it looks like Krampus and Star Wars reign supreme in quantity. That being said, we should all take some time to appreciate this truly magnificent homage to Alien that I would kill to have on my Christmas sweater! Speaking of which, I'd be down to see Christmas in space with Xenomorphs! Somebody pitch that!

Mark Ruffalo Says a Solo HULK Movie "Doesn't Look Particularly Promising"

Considering the near miraculous deal that was struck between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures to share the character of Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it would be understandable if big fans of The Incredible Hulk were on the edge of their seats hoping that Marvel would be able to come to an understanding with Universal to finally create another solo Hulk film. But according to the man who currently plays the not-so-jolly green giant, that seems unlikely at the moment.

In a new interview, Mark Ruffalo spoke about the likelihood of a new solo Hulk film with Yahoo:

Marvel hasn’t been able to make a Hulk standalone movie because Universal has the rights to the character’s solo films. But Disney just made a deal with Sony to bring Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so do you think that’s a possibility with the Hulk now?
I think they’ve been working on it. Marvel and Universal famously don’t get along very well, and so that’s working against us, definitely. But I know for a fact that everyone is holding out hope that one day we can do it. But the nature of the relationship right now, it’s a little prohibitive. And I hope that that changes, that changes with regimes, it changes over the course of time. But right now it doesn’t look particularly promising.
Sony had a big regime change, and so they needed to change things, and it seems like it’s going to work out from both sides.
Yeah, I think ultimately that’s what they’re after, it working out for both sides. But like I said, Marvel and Universal are just not having a good time together right now.

Though it still sounds like it'll be a while until we get another movie in which Hulk smashes up the screen by himself, at least we know when we'll see the character again after the events of the disappointing Age of Ultron: he'll pop up next to the God of Thunder in Thor: Ragnarok.

The Films of Quentin Tarantino, Ranked

$

With The Hateful Eight coming out in limited release tomorrow, now’s an appropriate time to take stock of the eight theatrical feature films from writer/director Quentin Tarantino. So sit back and read on; I suspect a lot of you will disagree about this list, but I look forward to seeing the conversation that takes place in the comments.

8. Death Proof

This certainly isn’t a controversial choice for QT’s worst movie. Too long, too self-indulgent, and too niche, this is basically the cinematic embodiment of hubris. At this point, he and Robert Rodriguez seemingly thought they could get away with anything, and the failure of Grindhouse was a bit of a wake-up call for both of them. Death Proof is a movie I’d be OK with never watching again.

7. Kill Bill

Love the first part, was bored out of my mind with the second. To be fair, I’ve seen Volume 1 so many more times than Volume 2 (I’ve probably only seen Volume 2 twice, and the most recent time was around eight years ago), but I remember loving the style and action of the first film and that giving way to long scenes of dialogue that didn’t interest me in the second. So, cumulatively, this takes the #7 spot for me.

6. Jackie Brown

For a long time, I wasn’t overly impressed with Tarantino’s films. I had seen Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, but knowing he incorporated references from other movies into his screenplays to the point people accused him of stealing made me think of him as a guy who just remixed other films and didn’t really add much of his own stuff to the conversation…because I was young and dumb. Jackie Brown was the movie that convinced me Tarantino could actually walk the walk, and this underappreciated gem made me go back and reexamine his whole filmography. To this day, I still don’t think it gets the love it should.

5. Django Unchained

Even though Tarantino originally wanted Will Smith for the role of Django, Jamie Foxx ended up being an excellent replacement. He might be QT’s most mythic character, a slave turned bounty hunter who’s on a quest to find his stolen wife, and he fits wonderfully into QT’s revisionist western history, in which the audience gets so much satisfaction from seeing history’s bad guys (slave owners, in this case) gunned down by righteous heroes. Christoph Waltz is delightful, and Leonardo DiCaprio’s performance as the villainous plantation owner Calvin Candie is some of the best work of his career.

4. Reservoir Dogs

Talk about a hell of a feature film debut. Reservoir Dogs was a major piece of kindling in the indie revolution of the ‘90s, and it announced Tarantino as a bold new presence on the film scene. I still love the idea of a heist film where you never see the actual heist and mainly witness the aftermath, and no one who’s seen this movie will ever hear Stealers Wheel’s “Stuck in the Middle” and not instantly think of a psychotic Michael Madsen.

3. Pulp Fiction

I imagine this movie would top a lot of other people’s lists, and while it’s undeniably great, it speaks to how much I appreciate his other films that there are still two others I like more than this one. After the well-placed jab of Reservoir Dogs caught audiences off guard, Pulp Fiction was the knockout punch. It became a pop culture sensation, and its non-linear storytelling inspired a generation of lesser knock-offs that plagued much of the late ’90s and early 2000s. This was Tarantino’s first honest-to-God smash hit, and it basically paved the way for him to become the filmmaker he is today.

2. The Hateful Eight

A slow burn western mystery that plays like the twisted love child of Agatha Christie and John Ford, The Hateful Eight might end up being my favorite Tarantino film, but I need to see it a few more times to be sure. As of now, though, it’s in the second place because of it’s amazing script and memorable characters. The whole film feels a bit like a longer version of the underground bar scene in Inglourious Basterds, and if I have one complaint with that, it’s that I’m not certain that level of suspense should be sustained for quite that length of time. I can’t wait to watch this movie again.

1. Inglourious Basterds

Hans Landa is one of Tarantino’s best characters, and Christoph Waltz is the ideal example of the perfect casting at the perfect time for the perfect role. His congenial manner conceals a terrifying willingness to kill, and with Melanie Laurent’s character drifting in and out of the crosshairs, my stomach was in knots the whole time. The title group is basically a collection of side characters not terribly important to the overall plot, but the world-building and Tarantino’s insistence on the power of cinema to save the world (literally) makes this an all-timer for me. The film ends with Brad Pitt’s character saying “I think this just might be my masterpiece,” and only a guy as ballsy as Tarantino could pull off ending a film with a moment as meta as that and — here’s the important part — actually be correct about it. There’s an abundance of arrogance in Hollywood, but Tarantino’s comes from the fact that he’s a walking cinematic encyclopedia with the knowledge that he’s good enough to back up his claims.

Rey’s True Identity Revealed in STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS Disney Infinity?

Update:

It's been pointed out that it has been confirmed that Kylo Ren says "curses" NOT "cousin" because it's a reaction to him being hit by Rey. She's still most likely Luke's daughter, though. I guess we'll just have to wait and see!

Original article follows:

There has been a lot of fan speculation regarding the lead character in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Rey, and who she might be related to. It looks like her true identity may have been revealed in Disney Infinity’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens expansion.

If you don’t want to know what her possible relationship is with the characters in Star Wars, then don’t read ahead because of possible SPOILERS. Of course, if this bit of information has been put into an official Disney game then Disney obviously wants you to know it.

We’ve already been told that everything involving Star Wars since Disney has taken over the franchise will be considered canon. Below you’ll find a video featuring gameplay from The Force Awakens Disney Infinity game, and in a section of it, we see Rey fighting against Kylo Ren.

At around the 20:30 mark in the video you hear Kylo Ren yell at Rey, “Face me, cousin!”

So there it is. If the game is following what the movies are doing, and these characters are really cousins, then that would confirm that Luke Skywalker is Rey’s father as a lot of fans suspected. After all, the movie was full of heavy suggestions that this was the case. I was personally hoping for a different outcome, but that’s ok. We’ll get to see how this reveal plays out in Rian Johnson’s Episode VIII, and it will be quite a shock for her to learn the truth, unless she already knows it deep down inside.

There’s always a chance that Disney Infinity could have made a mistake somehow. We’ll find out on May 26th, 2017 when Episode VIII hits theaters!

Long Live The Empire: Guys Successfully Launch A 15-Foot Star Destroyer

$

On the heels of us posting about how most Star Wars vehicles would not be actually flyable, the guys at Flight Test ended up making a replica Empire Star Destroyer fly! That being said, it didn't fly well enough to rule the galaxy with an iron grip. It also was made of foam and a fraction of the size of the fictional star destroyer.

One thing that piqued my interest while I was watching...how does the Empire launch their Star Destroyers? Are they constructed in space like the Death Star? Do they have a giant truck drive a ways before their launch? Anyone with the answer, feel free to let me know in the comments. Also check out their site if you're looking for specs outside of the ones presented in the video! Maybe you'll have more success!

Shocking Visualization Shows Pollution We've Launched Into Space Since The Late '50s

Space. The final frontier. An infinite mass. Man's garbage can. According to Dr. Stuart Grey (who created this visualization), this video represents around 20,000 or so pieces of debris we've launched or left in space since the late 1950s. It started with the Russians launching Sputnik. Then the Americans responded with a number of competitors. Fast forward to 3 years after Sputnik's launch, and there were already 200 items actively in orbit around the world. "Debris" is a bit of a deceptive term as well — it should be noted as some of this "debris" has been proven to be the same size as a typical school bus!

The amount is also growing at an alarming rate. For example, a Chinese space mission in 2007 created 2000 pieces of debris in one launch! It's something that will become an issue we need to resolve if we don't want ships colliding with debris and inhibiting long term space travel. While the video is decent, I highly encourage you to check out his website and his full presentation right here!

We have seen shows come and go for a whole lot of reasons. Sometimes the general consensus deems it justified, sometimes not. Although it’s a mystery why Dominion was cancelled before the final showdown with Lucifer, it appears there are those out there who are not terribly happy about the situation.

Regardless of the reasons, the artists involved did a fantastic job with the show. I’m happy to present two very well-polished, exclusive videos featuring Bill Brown and virtuoso cellist Tina Guo in the studio as they brought some gorgeous music to the series. Perhaps if enough people complain, there could be a chance to reincarnate this series and bring back the end of the world.

Here's the red-band trailer for Marlon Wayans' Fifty Shades of Grey parody, Fifty Shades of Black. We saw another trailer for this movie earlier, but this is a completely NSFW look at what Wayans has in store for us. Yes, this is a trailer in which Marlon Wayans disgustingly lubes up a keyhole with his own spit and simulates intercourse with a key. You know, real classy stuff.

Fifty Shades of Black arrives in theaters on January 29th, 2016.

"It's time you learned what it means to be a man."

We've got a new international TV spot for you to watch today for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. It features a bit of new stuff but not much. I think it's worth watching just to hear Batman say the above line of dialogue to Superman.

On top of that, Heroic Hollywood is reporting that there will not be a Marvel-style post-credits sequence that leads into the Justice League movie. Instead, during the closing credits, we will see a montage sequence much like what Zack Snyder did for the opening sequence of his Watchmen movie, which could prove to be awesome! I loved the opening credits for Watchmen! That montage will be used to help set up Justice League. I included it below the TV spot so you can watch it if you want.

Fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.

Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice will be released in theaters on March 25th, 2016. Justice League: Part One will be released in theaters on November 17th, 2017.

The Finalizer Star Destroyer in THE FORCE AWAKENS Uses the Same Power as Lightsabers

The Finalizer is the name of the epically huge new version of the Star Destroyer for the First Order. This is the flagship that both General Hux and Kylo Ren travel around the galaxy in causing chaos.

There’s a very intriguing bit of information that has been revealed regarding this thing that is sure to interest Star Wars fans. The following information comes directly from StarWars.com's official database, and it offers us some insight into the weaponry being used by the First Order on The Finalizer. Here’s the description:

The powerful flagship shared by General Hux and Kylo Ren, the dagger-shaped Finalizer is nearly twice the length of an Imperial-era Star Destroyer. The first of the new Resurgent class constructed in violation of treaties with the New Republic, the Finalizer’s heavy weapons are augmented by two starfighter wings, a hundred assault craft and a full legion of stormtroopers. Her turbolasers are more powerful and faster to recharge than Imperial-era weapons, a product of kyber crystals harvested in the Unknown Regions.

How crazy is it that their turbolasers are powered by kyber crystals?! I'm sure you all know what those are, but just in case, traditionally, those crystals are attuned to the force and they are used for only one purpose… to power lightsabers. That power is now being used by the First Order and the Dark Side to power their deadly laser blasters?! That’s pretty damn awesome, and at the same time, it's kinda disturbing.

It makes me wonder if kyber crystals were also used to help power the weapon on Starkiller Base. I have to say that giant red laser blast used to destroy planets sure did look like lightsaber blade reaching across space. There’s nothing said of that in the official description, though.

The information also tells us that the crystals were "harvested in the Unknown Regions” of the galaxy. This means that the First Order and Dark Side is using naturally grown kyber crystals. The red crystals used to power their lightsabers in the stories are traditionally synthetic.

I just thought this was a really cool little bit of information that the rest of you Star Wars fans might appreciate.
