How To Achieve The Original In-Camera Lightsaber Effect Used in STAR WARS

$

Shanks FX teamed up with PBS Digital Studios to bring us this interesting video called “The Original Star Wars Light Saber Effect.” It takes you through the process of how you can achieve the same in-camera effects that George Lucas used to create the lightsaber in the Star Wars films. It’s pretty fascinating to see how easy it is to pull this effect off. Here’s a note from the creator:

The lightsaber from Star Wars is arguably the most famous weapon in the history of cinema.
Go back in time to 1977 and learn how the lightsaber was first captured with the help of the highly reflective material "Scotchlite" & a compact motor at the hilt.
If you want to try this out yourself, "Scotchlite" tape rolls can be found at local hardware store for around $10.
I also went in search of a Graflex flashgun handle and was lucky enough to find one but it was one from the 60s and not the sleek silver version that Luke uses in Episode IV & V.
Enjoy guys, and I'm not seeing Star Wars till Sunday morning, so it's going be tough reading comments till then.
The opening of this episode is a little scene I've always wanted in a Star Wars movie... acquiring a Kyber crystal and constructing a lightsaber.
I know there is that deleted scene from Return of the Jedi of Luke adjusting his lightsaber settings, but I want a little more in depth account.

Enjoy the video!

Watch This Funny STAR WARS Jedi Robe Vanish Prank

Magician Rahat Hussein is back with another Star Wars Jedi prank! Last time we saw him, he used the power of the Force to grab a ketchup bottle for his hot dog. In this latest prank, he awesomely vanishes from the Jedi robe that he’s wearing. I have no idea how he does this, but it’s pretty incredible. I especially love the reactions on the people's faces when he disappears.

Matt Damon Offers BOURNE 5 Update and Teases Action

Matt Damn and director Paul Greengrass are currently in production on Bourne 5. There's still a lot that we don't know about the film, but during a recent interview with Variety, Damon opened up about where the production stands. In the process, he teases some of the action that we'll see in the movie.

“We’re, like, probably about halfway through. We started in September but they’re going dark for most of December and cutting basically the first two acts. And then we have the third act and then whatever we owe from the first two acts…We were in Tenerife, which is supposed to be Athens. It would be like a nighttime riot scene to kind of start the movie. And then England, Berlin a little bit for about a week, and a little bit in D.C. Then we’re going to Vegas for the third act…Big car chase on the strip.”

It wouldn't be a proper Bourne film without a big car chase scene! Damon goes on to talk about the timeline in the franchise and reveals that Jason Bourne has been off the grid for a pretty long time.

“You’ll find the character — like 'The Bourne Ultimatum,' the third act actually in the movie dovetails with the third act of 'The Bourne Supremacy.' So technically when the Bourne character disappears, it’s still 2004. So when this next one comes out in ’16, it will have been 12 years — in movie years — that the character as been off the grid. So what’s happened in those intervening years gives you a story.”

The movie will answer the questions of where Bourne has been, what’s he's been doing, and what gets him back into action again. Damon previously said this about the movie:

"Without giving too much of it away, it’s Bourne through an austerity-riddled Europe and in a post-Snowden world. It seems like enough has changed, you know? There are all these kinds of arguments about spying and civil liberties and the nature of democracy."

Julia Stiles will be reprising her franchise role and Alicia Vikander is also set to star alongside franchise newcomers Tommy Lee Jones, Riz Ahmed, Vincent Cassell, and Scott Shepherd. Jones is said to be playing a high-ranking CIA official and Cassell will be taking on the role of the villain. That villain is an assassin who's tracking down Jason Bourne.

The film opens in theaters on July 29th, 2016.

DRAGON BALL Z Ford Fusion Commercial

Ford is pulling on the interest cords of the geek crowd with this new commercial the made to promote the Ford Fusion. The whole ad was created in the style of the classic Dragon Ball Z anime series, and it stars a couple characters from the show. Here’s a description that came along with the commercial:

Dragon Ball Z’s Krillin and Gohan have three wishes… but who needs three wishes when you can have the complete package in a 2016 Ford Focus?
The Focus has a lot to offer. Yes, it’s a great drive – responsive and fun. But it’s also the most equipped Focus to date, with features that deliver more by design – from comfort to convenience. With a standard Rearview Camera, EPA estimated 42 highway miles per gallon* and optional Sony audio system**, the 2016 Ford Focus delivers on convenience and fun.

I have a feeling we’re going to start seeing a lot more and more of these kids of geek-centric commercials. It just proves how mainstream being a geek has become.

Intense Trailer for DESIERTO Features a Deadly Run for The Border

Jonás Cuarón and Alfonso Cuarón, the created team that brought us Gravity, have created an intense new suspense thriller called Desierto

This is the latest feature film and directorial effort of Jonás, who is the son of Gravity director Alfonso. The story centers on a group of Mexican migrants who are trying to cross the border into the U.S.A. and things take a turn for the worse when a vigilante with a rifle goes after them in the American southwest desert with the intent to kill.

The movie stars Gael García Bernal (The Motorcycle Diaries) as one of the migrants and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Watchmen) as the man trying to kill him.

What begins as a hopeful journey to seek a better life becomes a harrowing and primal fight for survival when a deranged, rifle-toting vigilante chases a group of unarmed men and women through the treacherous U.S.-Mexican border. In the harsh, unforgiving desert terrain, the odds are stacked firmly against them as they continuously discover there’s nowhere to hide from the unrelenting, merciless killer.

Here's a statement from Alfonso Cuarón regarding the film:

DESIERTO marks a particularly personal journey in storytelling for writer, director, editor and producer Jonás Cuarón who spent the last 7 years bringing the story of the migrant experience to the screen. In his own words: “I took a trip through the U.S. Southwest where I encountered first-hand stories surrounding immigration and the often cruel and violent story of the migrant journey. I was very moved and immediately felt compelled to outline the film – which happened even before writing GRAVITY. I’ve always been very interested in the concept of films like Spielberg’s DUEL, Konchalovskiy’s RUNAWAY TRAIN and Bresson’s A MAN ESCAPES. They are non-stop nail biting thrillers with very little dialogue but that at the same time manage to juggle various themes. I was very interested in the drive of these films where the audience connects with the story and character in a very visceral way. In DESIERTO, I wanted to create a gripping film that would engage the audience in that same kind of visceral, cathartic experience and also allow them to reflect on this very complicated subject which illuminates the often devastating experience migrants face in the search for a better life. Bringing Gael (García Bernal) on board was a no-brainer, not just for his skillful acting but also for the soul I trusted he would bring to the story. I knew that Gael also felt very passionately about issues surrounding immigration and would bring to life the struggle, hope and determination that are the fabric of the migrant story.”

Desierto will be released in theaters on March 4th, 2016.

James Franco is Remaking MOTHER, MAY I SLEEP WITH DANGER For Lifetime

$

James Franco is an interesting individual who loves to try all kinds of things in his career, which is awesome! He’s always doing something new and interesting. It looks like one of his upcoming projects could be a remake of the classic 1996 TV movie-of-the-week, Mother, May I Sleep With Danger? for the Lifetime channel.

The original movie, which I’ve never seen, or ever cared to see, stars Tori Spelling as an innocent college coed whose seemingly wholesome boyfriend, played by Ivan Sergei, may actually be…are you ready for it?...a murderer!

Next year is the 20th anniversary of the movie, and the remake will be a celebration of it. The news comes from Vulture, who says that Spelling will appear in the movie, and she will most likely be playing the mother this time around. The movie will be co-directed and written by Amber Coney and Melanie Aitkenhead, who both worked with Franco on the upcoming feature adaptation of his novel, Actors Anonymous.

It’ll be interesting to see what Franco’s plans are for this thing. I wonder if he will play it serious or give it a comedic parody undertone. Playing it completely serious actually might make it more funny. What do you think of Franco’s latest project?

THE PRINCESS BRIDE - Breakdown of Difference Between The Book and The Film

the-princess-bride-breakdown-of-difference-between-the-book-and-the-film

Cinefix has released an interesting video that puts the center of attention on the classic story of The Princess Bride. It breaks down how the movie is different from the book. I’ll be honest, I’ve never read the book, but I sure do love the movie. It’s so damn charming! Now I know everything that was different in the story between the two, thanks to this very informative video. If you’re a fan of the film or the book, this video is most definitely worth checking out!

The Princess Bride is a book within a book that was adapted into a book within a movie that garnered most of its success on home video. Now it’s time for us to read between the lines to find the differences between the book and the film.
The Princess Bride is a romantic comedy about lost love, revenge, torture, kidnapping, desire, and much more. Farmhand Westley falls in love with the beautiful Buttercup, but before they can be together forever they must endure many trials. The book and film have many similarities, both dealing with long lost lovers being reunited only to be pulled apart again and then finding their way back into each other’s arms, but many of the characters in the film look significantly different than their book counterparts, plus Buttercup is not nearly as dimwitted in the movie. At that, it’s time pull back the proverbial shower curtain on all the differences between the book and the film.

Christopher Nolan's Next Film Is Reportedly a World War II Drama

Fans of Christopher Nolan are eagerly waiting to find out what his next film project will be. The last movie he made what the mind-blowing sci-fi space exploration film Interstellar. Now it sounds like he'll be taking on a whole new genre. According to La Voix du Nord (via Nolan Fans), Nolan's next film will be a World War II drama.

The film is said to be inspired by Operation Dynamo, a mission in 1940 where nearly 340,000 Allied troops were rescued after being trapped by the Nazis in Dunkirk, France. There's no confirmation that this will be Nolan's next project, but if it turns out to be true, then I'll be very much looking forward to seeing it!

The film project was described as a “super-production” by Patrice Vergriete, the mayor of Dunkirk, almost two weeks ago, and the initial reports say that Nolan has traveled to Dunkirk several times with his brother, incognito, to familiarize himself by the territory and the mission that took place there.

Here is some info regarding Operation Dynamo from Brittanica.com

"The immediate context of the Dunkirk evacuation was Germany’s invasion of the Low Countries and northern France in May 1940. On May 10 the German attack on the Netherlands began with the capture by parachutists of key bridges deep within the country, with the aim of opening the way for mobile ground forces. The Dutch defenders fell back westward, and by noon on May 12 German tanks were on the outskirts of Rotterdam. Queen Wilhelmina and her government left the country for England on May 13, and the next day the Dutch army surrendered to the Germans."

Retired U.S. Army officer George Fielding Eliot wrote this about the evacuation of Dunkirk:

“No purely military study of the major aspects of the war could do justice to the skill and the heroism of the evacuation from Dunkirk. Suffice it to say only that, when it began, members of the British imperial general staff doubted that 25% of the B.E.F. could be saved. When it was completed, some 330,000 French and British troops, together with some Belgian and Dutch forces who refused to surrender, had reached haven in England.”

Nolan’s next project is currently untitled and is set to open on July 21st, 2017 through Warner Bros. It'd be interesting to see if this actually turns out to be it. If so, it wouldn't be the first film based on the event. In 1958, there was a film made called Operation Dynamo: The Dunkerque of Leslie Norman (1958), and in 1964 there was Week-end à Zuydcoote.

Six Things You May Have Missed in The New DEADPOOL Trailer

On Christmas Day, we got two new trailers for Tim Miller and Ryan ReynoldsDeadpool. One of them was a red-band trailer full of all kinds of funny Deadpool-style vulgarity. Mr. Sunday Movies has released a new video breakdown for the trailer, and it points out six Easter eggs, references, and other things that you may have missed while watching the trailer.

Here’s the note that the creator left on his YouTube page.

Deadpool Trailer 2 Easter Eggs, References and Things Missed! With new red band and green band trailers released let’s take a look at some of the nods to the comics, the X-Men films and other Marvel Easter Eggs that hint at surprise cameos.
So what kind of Easter Eggs are we talking here? There’s quite a bit of of stuff relating to the Weapon X Program, a mutant experimentation initiative that has given us some of the most popular comic book characters of all time, including Wolverine.
And speaking off, details leading up to this trailer lead me to believe Hugh Jackman will make a small appearance in the film on top of the two X-Men we see in the film, Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Colossus, acting as a mentor for the younger mutant. And although Sony and Marvel have the rights to Spider-man tied up, don’t be surprised if he’s referenced in some way. But also don’t be surprised if he isn’t. There’s no commitment to that on my part.
This trailer shows us a whole bunch of other stuff, a hint at Wade Wilson’s wife Vanessa and the powers she might get/already has, a nod to Marrow (a minor mutant)) and a look at how powerful Gina Carano’s character is. In that scene with Angel Dust flattening Colossus and from what we’ve heard from the director she’s apparently very much like the Hulk in the sense the angrier she gets the stronger she gets. Anyways, that’ll do it, thanks for watching! Watch something else if you want, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks to EW, we have a new photo from the upcoming Assassin's Creed movie featuring Michael Fassbender and Ariane Labed all decked out in Assassin's Creed style gear. Fassbender also spoke to the outlet about playing the video game in preparation for the role and how they are trying to make something special for the fans.

“I hadn’t played it before these guys approached me. I’ve played it since mainly to get an idea of the physicality of the character. We’re striving to find something special. We believe the whole concept around it is special and want to service that the best we can. The fans are really passionate: very specific and they expect accuracy and historical detail. We’re really trying to capitalize and feed on and enjoy the fun element. We’re working hard to make this something special.”

The movie is being directed by Justin Kurrzel (Macbeth), and it also stars Marion Cotillard (The Dark Knight Rises, Inception), Michael K. Williams (The Wire), Jeremy Irons (Batman v Superman), and Brendan Gleeson (Edge of Tomorrow).

Assassin’s Creed follows a character named of Callum Lynch who, "through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, is able to experience the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day."

The movie hits theaters on December 21st, 2016.

Anakin Skywalker Force Ghost Concept Art for STAR WAR: THE FORCE AWAKENS

anakin-skywalker-force-ghost-concept-art-for-star-war-the-force-awakens

It looks like early on in the development process of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the filmmakers were considering and appearance by Anakin Skywalker’s force ghost. The possibility was real enough to have some concept art created for the character. The art you see here was found in the recently released The Art of Star Wars: The Force Awakens Book (via MakingStarWars).

I do like that the concept art implements some of the elements of Darth Vader's darkness into Anakin’s look. There have been rumors that Hayden Christensen could reprise his role as Akakin in Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: Episode VIII. The fact that this concept art exists tells us that this could very well still be a possibility. If the art was released in this art book, though, then I imagine it’s not the final look that they would use if Johnson does plan on including Anakin’s force ghost in the next movie.

After seeing The Force Awakens and how it ended, it’s not hard to think that Luke has been conversing with the force ghosts of Yoda, Obi-Wan, and Anakin during his stay at the Jedi Temple.

There is some commentary from the artist, Iain Mccaig, and one of the most interesting pieces of information he shares is that when Anakin died, he didn’t fully go to the light side of the force. He explains how Anakin would flow back and forth between both Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader, which is incredibly intriguing. Does this mean he could be conversing with Kylo Ren as Vader and talking to Luke and Rey as Anakin? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see if they even utilize him! It’d kind of be awesome if they did.
