Awesome Early Concept and Poster Art for STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

Star Wars: The Force Awakens was such a beautifully designed film. I love how so many aspects of it were inspired by the concept art that was created by Ralph McQuarrie for the original Star Wars trilogy.

Thanks to Wired we have a collection of amazingly cool concept art the was done to help bring The Force Awakens to life. The art you see here is a lot of early stuff created by artist Phil Szostak, and it’s included in the coffee table book The Art of Star Wars: The Force Awakens

As you’ll see below, they offer us some of the alternate designs for the movie that were never used. Some of these images include the downed Star Destroyer on Jakku, an alternate version of BB-8, and several different ideas for First Order stormtroopers.

I also included a cool piece of poster art at the very bottom created by artist Erica Tan.

Kurt Russell Confirms He's In Talks For GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Vol. 2

Not long ago we learned that Kurt Russell was director James Gunn’s number one choice to play Star-Lord’s dad in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. This is something that it seems fans would love to see! How awesome would it be if he were actually cast in the role!?

Russell recently spoke with the Wall Street Journal and was a guest on Wolfpop’s Happy Sad Confused podcast to promote The Hateful Eight. In both interviews, the actor was asked about the reports of him possibly joining the highly anticipated Marvel movie. This is what Russell said on the podcast:

“I literally got a phone call two days ago about this. I’ve never seen Guardians of the Galaxy so I don’t know anything about it. Many times I’ve heard ‘That’s a really fun movie, a really good movie [with] great characters.’ I don’t know it! So, I didn’t realize that [James Gunn] had written and directed it, but we talked to each other on the phone. And I just had to be honest and say, ‘Thank you for considering me, I have to read [the script], and I have to watch the [first] movie because I can’t bring anything for you [right now]. I’ve got nothing to offer here. So, I’m amazed to get asked about this because everybody knows more about it than I do... it’s a little weird.”

I’m sure he’ll take the time to watch the movie now that he knows he’s wanted. Hopefully, he likes it and the script for the sequel is to his liking, because Russell needs to be in this movie! It may not sound like anything is moving forward in his comment above, but he confirmed with the Wall Street Journal that he is actually in talks with Marvel.

“It could be a one line thing for all I know. But yeah, we’re talking about it... there’s just nothing to talk about at the moment.”

He’s joking about the “one line” thing. Of course, he’s going to have more than one line in the movie. This is obviously going to be a major role! There’s no official word on who Star-Lord’s dad will be in the second chapter of the story, but there have been a few rumors and lots of speculation. I'm excited to see who he might actually turn out to be!

Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 hits theaters May 5th, 2017.

Modern Movies Get Awesome Collection of Retro VHS Box Art

We live in a generation in which kids will never have the joy of going to a video store and sifting through VHS tapes. I have a lot of fond memories spending time at the video store with my friends looking for fun and obscure films to watch.

Imgur user RegretfulMoan has posted a collection of retro-style art that harkens back to the old school days of VHS and offers a look at what some of the modern day movies today would look like if they got VHS releases.

They’re absolutely fantastic, and they perfectly capture the greatness that was VHS tapes.

Mark Ruffalo Discusses How Bruce Banner and The Hulk's Personality Merge

$

The next time we see The Hulk in full on action in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be in Thor: Ragnarok. He will be going on an adventure with Thor, and in the process, the two will almost surely fight again. I've enjoyed seeing this character evolve in these films, and that's something that is going to continue.

During a recent interview with AICN, Mark Ruffalo talked about Bruce Banner and The Hulk and how their personalities will most likely start to merge. I imagine Ruffalo knows what Marvel's plan is for Thor: Ragnarok, so what he says about the character here is something we might end up seeing in that film.

The last time we saw Hulk, one of his biggest fears was completely losing control, and he wasn't ready to reunite with his team or be around society in general. When asked what Banner is thinking at that moment, Ruffalo said:

"He's on the run. I think that we carry that through. It's not just a matter of taking himself to some remote place and hiding. Now he's removing himself from humanity altogether. I'm not sure where we're going to head with that, but I'm sure that's probably still very much alive within him.
"It's very subtle, but the Banner/Hulk consciousness is beginning to meld a little bit. Who decided to leave? Was it Banner or Hulk? It's not really in the (cinematic) mythology of Hulk up until that moment to be that conscious and pro-active. It's interesting, right?"

He definitely raised an interesting question there. One of the reasons Hulk is such an intriguing character is because there are two different personalities in that brain of Banner's, and when they start to meld, things are going to get very interesting. Ruffalo went on to express his excitement of what the possibilities are for his character:

"Yeah, I think it is. I think it's really exciting where we could go with it. Now I feel like we're kind of in No Man's Land. I mean, the comic books have kind of broached the subject, but we're moving away from the traditional Hulk/Banner relationship. We're starting to mess with it a little bit."

It's exciting to know that these elements of Banner and the Hulk could finally be implemented into the MCU. Once they do, it's will be fun to see how far Marvel will take it.

"No. Now we're going to see how far we can push the limits of it before people get sick of it!"

One day, maybe it will all lead to a new Hulk solo film, and for the record, I don't think fans will ever get tired of Hulk!

zoolander-no-2-gets-an-amusing-motion-poster-and-regular-poster

Paramount Pictures has released a new motion poster for Ben Stiller’s Zoolander No. 2. It features the really, really, really ridiculously good-looking cast posing for you as they walk by. We also have a new regular poster that you can see above, in which Derek has his hands full.

In case you missed the trailers for the film, you can watch the domestic trailer here, and the international trailer here. I was fan of the first film, and this sequel looks like it will be just as funny.

“It’s ten years later and most of it is set in Europe. It’s basically Derek and Hansel ten years later – though the last movie ended on a happy note a lot of things have happened in the meantime. Their lives have changed and they’re not really relevant anymore. It’s a new world for them.”

The film sees them trying to reinvent themselves as they embark on an adventure to find out who is killing young male models who seem to be Zoolander loyalists.

The movie stars Stiller as Zoolander, Owen Wilson returning as Hansel, Penelope Cruz as Valentina, Will Ferell as Jacobim Mugatu, and Kristen Wiig as Alexanya Atoz. The cast also features Christine Taylor and Cyrus Arnold, with cameos by Benedict Cumberbatch, Billy Zane, Fred Armisen, Justin Bieber, Kyle Mooney, Kim Kardashian, Ariana Grande, and more.

Zoolander No. 2 will be released on February 12th, 2016.

Max Landis Hated STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS; Watch His Video Rant

Max Landis, the screenwriter of films such as Chronicle, Victor Frankenstein, and American Ultra, didn’t like J.J. AbramsStar Wars: The Force Awakens. I’ve only met one person who absolutely hated the movie, which is beloved by millions of people. It’s really weird when someone comes out against it and starts bashing it like this.

Among other things, Landis calls the hero of the story, Rey, a "Mary Sue”, which is a term that originated on TV Tropes. It is described as an “idealized fictional character, a young or low-rank person who saves the day through extraordinary abilities. Often but not necessarily this character is recognized as an author insert and/or wish-fulfillment.”

The use of the “Mary Sue” term has prompted a lot of fans to call Landis out for being sexist. In response, Landis released a video in which he tries to explain himself, while at the same time continuing to bash the movie. Of course, he insists that he’s not a sexist in the video, and he hopes that people will listen to his way of thinking.

He admits that no one will change his way of thinking, and I doubt anything he says in the video will change the fans' way of thinking. The whole thing comes off as self-indulgent. In the end, Abrams' film will go down as a classic, and Landis' movies will be forgotten. Check out his rant. Haters gonna hate.

Animated SPIDER-MAN Movie Gets a New Release Date

When Sony first announced that Phil Lord and Chris Miller would develop an animated Spider-Man movie for them, it was reported that the movie would be released in summer of 2018. The movie now has an official release date of December 21st, 2018.

Lord and Miller are set to write and  produce the animated Spider-Man movie, but they will most likely not direct it because they will be focused on bringing the Han Solo standalone movie to the big screen for Lucasfilm.

The animated film will in no way be connected to the live-action Spider-Man universe that Marvel and Sony are developing. If this animated film does well, I hope that it will inspire Marvel to start making awesome big budget animated movies for some of their other comic book properties.

The live-action Spider-Man movie is set for a July 28th, 2017 release, and Marvel will introduce their new Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War on May 6th, 2016.

December 2015 Galaxy Button (Loot Crate Labs)

lootcrates-december-2015-box-review-galaxy

This month’s pin is a gold color with a spacecraft on it. Every box comes with a pin, and it's fun to collect them all.

We decided to commemorate Galaxy with this special metallic gold button.  Next month, we raise the bar even higher.  The countdown to launch has begun…

Exclusive Ugly Holiday Sweater T-Shirt (Loot Crate Labs)

lootcrates-december-2015-box-review-galaxy1

I love this shirt! I'm a huge fan of art done in the style of retro 8-bit graphics and the print seems to have that kind of theme to it. The design also pays homage to space and space exploration vehicles.

2015 was a banner year for intergalactic exploration & discovery as Nasa’s New Horizons spacecraft flew within 8,000 miles of Pluto.  And with December’s rash of holiday parties filling up our calendars, we figured a new seasonal tee was on everyone’s wish list.  So wasting no time, we called our buddy, artist Drew Wise, and he designed our whimsical 8-bit mashup of historical space vehicles.  Roll out the red carpet, ‘cuz we’re thinking it might land you on a best-dressed list or two.

Halo 5: Guardians REQ Pack (343 Industries)

lootcrates-december-2015-box-review-galaxy2

Halo 5 is one of those games that I own but I haven't had a chance to play it because I've been so damn busy. But when I do get around to playing it, you can bet your ass I'll use this code for the REQ pack in the game.

Halo 5’s new REQ System allows you to earn or buy REQ Packs, which contain virtual trading cards that grant you cool stuff, like cosmetic armor changes, weapons and even vehicles. What’s in our REQ Pack?  You won’t know until you open it!  Surprise!

Exclusive Star Wars Han Solo Vinyl Bobble-head (Funko)

lootcrates-december-2015-box-review-galaxy4

Hell yeah! Who wouldn't want a Han Solo Pop! Vinyl bobble-head!? You won't be able to get this one anywhere else. It's a LootCrate exclusive.

We wanted to send off the year with loot of galactic proportions, so this was an easy choice. Knowing Looters deserved an exclusive collectible, we chose a beloved Star Wars icon and cloaked him in warm snow gear suitable for a long cold night on Hoth.  You won’t find this Funko in any other crate nor galaxy for that matter!

Exclusive Galaxy Quest Authentic Prop Replica Patch (Quantum Mechanix)

lootcrates-december-2015-box-review-galaxy6

Galaxy Quest is such an entertaining film. It's one that I watch all the time. If I had a coat to sew this patch onto, I totally would. I guess I'll have to buy a coat now.

What do you call a Star Trek movie that’s not a Star Trek movie?  Why, Galaxy Quest of course!  Ranked as one of the best Star Trek movies in (or, in this case, out of) the franchise, we celebrate its fandom with an authentic prop replica patch like the one featured on the film’s command uniforms.  And as 2015 draws to a close, we eagerly look forward to the rumored debut of the film’s spin-off in the year ahead.  Looters rejoice!

Exclusive Star Wars BB-8 Crew Socks (Hyp Hosiery)

lootcrates-december-2015-box-review-galaxy7

BB-8 is everyone's new favorite droid, and these socks are a fun addition to this month's loot. They're really cute, and my kids want to steal them from me. They're mine!

We’ve stuffed our December crate with care, and by care, we mean an awesome pair of warm new socks.  A breakout fan favorite months before Episode VII even screened, we chose BB-8 to be our droid of the year by having him grace this colorful pair of unisex crew socks.

Exclusive Halo 5 Ammo Tin Box (A Crowded Coop)

lootcrates-december-2015-box-review-galaxy8

I don't own any ammo, but that OK — cool ammo boxes can be used to hold anything! I'll use it to pack my lunches in. It also makes a great decorative piece.

A tin by any other name would not be as cool as this one.  Decorative as well as functional, its look is inspired by the UNSC ammo crate tins used by Spartan soldiers in the Halo gaming franchise.  Perfect for storing your gear or grub, it features a hinged top and military-style clasp.

Overall, this was one of my favorite Loot Crate boxes since I signed up with them. It was full of lots of cool stuff that I'm into.

David Fincher and Charlize Theron Teaming For Netflix Series MINDHUNTER

$

Director David Fincher helped put Netflix original series on the map by directing the first two episodes of House of Cards and setting the tone and visual style of that show (he remains an executive producer). After a couple of failed attempts to get shows off the ground at HBO, it looks like Fincher is heading back to the streaming service, and actress Charlize Theron may be to thank for it.

Deadline reports that Fincher and Theron will executive produce a new series called Mindhunter, which is based on the 1996 book Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit, written by former special agent John Douglas and Mark Olshaker. Check out the synopsis:

He has hunted some of the most notorious and sadistic criminals of our time: The Trailside Killer in San Francisco, the Atlanta Child murderer. He has confronted, interviewed and researched dozens of serial killers and assassins, including Charles Manson, Richard Speck, John Wayne Gacy, and James Earl Ray – for a landmark study to understand their motives. To get inside their minds. He is Special Agent John Douglas, the model for law enforcement legend Jack Crawford in Thomas Harris’s thrillers Red Dragon and The Silence of the Lambs, and the man who ushered in a new age in behavorial science and criminal profiling. Recently retired after twenty-five years of service, John Douglas can finally tell his unique and compelling story.

(This show shouldn't be confused with Mindhunters, the 2004 movie starring Val Kilmer and Christian Slater, even though that film also centered on profilers of serial killers.)

Sounds very much up Fincher's alley, and considering Theron's recent appearance in Dark Places, it seems like she's into this kind of dark material as well. Apparently this has been in the works for a long time; the duo originally had it set up at HBO six years ago, but it fell apart before Netflix scooped it up. There's no word on whether she'll star yet, but he's expected to direct at least the pilot. Joe Penhall, the British writer/playwright who wrote the 2009 film adaptation of The Road, is writing the screenplay. Interested?

17 Fun Facts About GREMLINS

$

0

Joe Dante’s Gremlins was my number one favorite Christmas set movie before Krampus came out. I still absolutely love Gremlins and will continue to watch it every year. After watching it last weekend with my family, I realized that I haven’t done a fun facts list for this movie so I decided to dive in and learn some things that I never knew about the movie before! So without further ado, here are 17 fun facts about this classic film.

The following info came from IMDb and I added some commentary and video to point out some of the things that are listed.

  • In Cantonese Chinese, "mogwai" means devil, demon, or gremlin.
  • The movie theater that blows up in the film was involved in a few other accidents in other films. Marty McFly drove the DeLorean into the entrance at the end of Back to the Future. The theater ended up burning down with the rest of the buildings in the fire that happened on the Universal lot right after the filming of Back to the Future Part II.
  • The scene in the department store where the Gremlin Stripe attacks Billy with a chainsaw was not originally in the script. It was added by Joe Dante and Zach Galligan as an homage to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.
  • The movie helped influence the MPAA to create the PG-13 rating. Many felt the scenes of violence in both movies were too much for a PG rating, but not enough for an R rating — just like Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
  • The time machine prop from The Time Machine can be seen behind Rand Peltzer when he's on the phone with his wife while attending the convention. A moment later, the machine has disappeared to the astonishment of several onlookers. Steven Spielberg makes his cameo in this scene driving an electric wheelchair.
  • Producer Steven Spielberg almost hired Tim Burton to direct the film after he watched some of his short films. He decided against it because Burton had never directed a feature-length film before. I actually would have loved to see how Burton would have handled the material.
  • Both Judd Nelson and Emilio Estevez were considered for the role of Billy.
  • Near the very beginning of the film, as Mr. Peltzer makes his way to the curio shop in Chinatown, there’s a wrecked car with the hood up and smoke coming out of it. That car is an AMC Gremlin. In real life, the AMC Gremlin logo (located on the gas cap) bears a resemblance to the Gremlins featured in the film.
  • When Billy leads Pete up to his room to show him the mogwai, you can see a rolled up movie poster for Twilight Zone: The Movie. Dante directed one of the "episodes" for that film a year earlier. I had that same poster when I was a kid! I still might have it somewhere. I’ll have to look.
  • “The official comic strip adaptation included scenes that were not in the movie, including Billy's mother asking if the mogwai was a rat followed by the mogwai using Rand's 'Bathroom Buddy,' thus earning the name 'Gizmo.' There was also more emphasis on a subplot of Mrs. Deagle trying to buy up everything in town, a scene of Billy finding that throwing juice on the mogwais has no effect on them, Mr. Hanson's students being more Billy's age, Gizmo and Kate trying to shut down the fountain and turn on the lights, and Billy smashing Stripe's skeleton with a baseball bat.”
  • At the beginning of the of movie, the theater is showing a couple of movies called A Boy's Life and Watch The Skies. These were the working titles for Steven Spielberg's E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial and Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
  • The Amblin Entertainment logo made its first on-screen appearance in the film.
  • The original script contained a scene where the gremlins attacked a McDonald's, eating customers instead of burgers. It also had a scene in which the creatures killed a dog and cut off the mom's head and toss it down a set of stairs.
  • “The Santa speech proved to be controversial, and studio executives insisted upon its removal, because they felt it was too ambiguous as to whether it was supposed to be funny or sad. Joe Dante stubbornly refused to take the scene out, saying it represented the film as a whole, which had a combination of horrific and comedic elements. Steven Spielberg did not like the scene but, despite his creative control, he viewed Gremlins as Dante's project and allowed him to leave it in.”
  • They were going to try and have monkeys play the gremlins in the movie, but they scrapped the idea when the test monkey panicked when they put a gremlin head on it.
  • “The Gizmo puppets were particularly frustrating because they were smaller and thus broke down more. Consequently, to satisfy the crew, a scene was included in which the gremlins hang Gizmo on a wall and throw darts at him. This was included on a list that the crew created known to them as the "Horrible Things to do to Gizmo" list.”
  • The novelization explains that Mr. Wing's grandson was severely punished by his grandfather for the back alley sale of Gizmo.

Below you’ll find an original trailer for the film along with a 1983 behind-the-scenes featurette. I also included a collection of deleted scenes.

Newest Trailer For Tom Hiddleston's I SAW THE LIGHT

I'm genuinely interested to hear if any of our readers are interested in seeing a biopic about Hank Williams. Even the country music legend's biggest fans have to admit that this movie seems to hit all of the familiar beats of biopics about musicians, and for me, that makes it seem like a boring movie. I don't know a single thing about Williams' real life, but because he's the subject of a biopic like this, I feel like I could take you beat by beat through what this movie is going to be and end up being pretty accurate when all is said and done. I don't know — maybe it's more about seeing Tom Hiddleston singing and taking on the personality of the singer than anything else.

Here's a new international trailer for I Saw the Light (via ComingSoon), and I'd love anyone who's hyped for this movie to let me know why in the comments just so I can understand where you're coming from. The film opens in theaters on March 25th, 2016.

7 Most Surprising Movies of 2015

$
0
0

Continuing our end of the year coverage, I figured it'd be fun to look back on movies that, for one reason or another, really surprised me in 2015. Read on to see if you agree with this list.

Kingsman: The Secret Service

In a year that boasted a brand new Daniel Craig James Bond film, I was not expecting to like three different spy movies more than Spectre. The first, Kingsman: The Secret Service, was more purely entertaining than any Bond movie ever made: it had all the humor, action, style, and swagger that Bond films so often try to capture. Plus, Kingsman actually had characters that were worth caring about and investing in, and I’m really looking forward to seeing if the eventual sequel can sustain its sense of energy and fun.

Spy

Melissa McCarthy movies are not normally my cup of tea. I liked her in Bridesmaids, but Identity Thief was so bad it made me actively avoid The Heat and Tammy. So imagine my surprise, then, when Spy — which reunited her with Bridesmaids director Paul Feig — ended up being a terrific movie that turned her normally-bumbling on-screen persona on its head and made her a force to be reckoned with. It’s the second spy film of the year I liked more than Spectre (Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation squeaked in as the third.) The supporting cast was on point — Jason Statham totally stole the show as a brash secret agent — and it’s hilarious throughout. This was a perfect showcase of exactly what Melissa McCarthy comedies should be like.

Jurassic World

I think people expected this movie would do well, but no one thought it would do THIS well. Jurassic World has a spot on this list because it somehow became one of the highest-grossing movies of all time, beating out both Avengers films (!), meaning that practically everyone has an opinion about it. Personally, I enjoyed the hell out of it, but I understand a lot of the criticisms people were (and still are) throwing at it. (I’ll admit that most of the characters are idiots.) I just had no idea audiences were itching to head back to Isla Nublar in such a big way.

Trainwreck

When 2015 began, I’d never even heard of Amy Schumer. But by the time summer rolled around, I’d seen every episode of her Comedy Central show Inside Amy Schumer, seen her perform stand-up live, reviewed her first film, and briefly interviewed her about her experience. Trainwreck consistently cracked me up, and while everyone rightfully heaped praise on Schumer for her acting and her screenplay (her first), the film has a secret weapon: Bill Hader. Everyone knows he’s funny from his work on SNL, but I was surprised at just how effective he was playing an authentic, normal guy here. Also surprising — LeBron James was actually pretty damn funny. Who would have thought?

Straight Outta Compton

Biopics are a dime a dozen, and biopics about musicians frankly seem like one of the most boring movies one could make these days. They all follow such a similar basic structure — the rags to riches story, followed by the person or persons in question succumbing to the temptations of power and money before ultimately dying or falling into obscurity, all while leaving a lasting aural legacy — that Walk Hard skewered them almost a decade ago. But Straight Outta Compton managed to be a vital, essential film because of the parallels of police brutality in the ‘80s and ‘90s and the string of racially motivated shootings that have torn through America recently. The film’s blistering energy and excellent performances from its leads made this movie a pleasure to watch despite its formulaic roots.

Mad Max: Fury Road

Everyone I know went absolutely apesh*t for this movie, and while I didn’t love it as much as seemingly everyone else on the planet, I can’t deny that I was surprised to see such a kinetic film spring forth from an aging George Miller. There was so much about Fury Road that sounded like it wouldn’t work, and at times it felt like Miller was possessed with some 1980s filmmaking demon spirit that allowed him to will these insane images into existence. There was a ferocity and fire to the story (another pleasant surprise: it was all about feminism), and thinking back on it — for one final surprise — I’m truly shocked that a major studio financed and released it.

The Big Short

I recently ranked all of director Adam McKay’s films for the site, and The Big Short ended up pretty high on that list. That he would tackle this subject matter head-on isn’t surprising — his films are often deeper than they’re given credit for, and the end-credits scene of The Other Guys is basically a dry run for this movie — but the surprise was how effectively he was able to convey mind-numbingly boring ideas. Learning the ins and outs of exactly how America’s economy collapsed in 2008 sounds about as exciting as reading a phone book, and McKay is fully aware of this; to combat the crushingly boring material, he brought together a stellar cast and spiced up the story using every trick in the book, including one of the film’s best touches: celebrity cameos who directly address the audience. It’s a movie that will make you angry, and it definitely establishes McKay as a filmmaker who, though he often makes comedies, is interested in very serious subjects.

Abrams Explains Why Some Trailer Scenes Were Cut Out of THE FORCE AWAKENS

It’s nothing new to see a completed movie that didn’t include scenes we saw in the trailer for it. This happens all the time, but it’s been a major topic of conversation among Star Wars fans. A lot of them are wondering why certain scenes from the trailers didn’t make it into the final cut of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. I even know someone that says he was cheated because of this and strongly feels that it was false advertising.

Sometimes scenes that were shot for the film that work for the trailer, just don’t make it into the final cut of the movie, and there’s nothing wrong with that. During an interview with EW, Abrams was asked about one of scene specifically. That scene included Maz handing Luke’s lightsaber over to General Leia. If you remember, in the film, Maz gives the lightsaber to Finn after Rey refuses to take it.

Abrams explains that there were a bunch of scenes that he didn’t end up using because it didn’t work for the story they wanted to tell.

“That was a scene actually filmed, but we took out. At one point, Maz used to continue along with the characters back to the Resistance base, but we realized that she really had nothing to do there of value, except to have her sitting around. Lupita did film scenes on set for that sequence, but it felt like going right just to go left, and it was unnecessary. So we ended up leaving those things out. Sometimes you discover that things you would have cut off a limb to shoot on the day are absolutely inconsequential, and in fact less impactful than if you were to remove it.
“As much as you try to kick the tires and write and shoot only what is necessary — no one wants to waste anyone’s time — when you’re in the editing room you realize, for instance, that introducing the character there actually diminishes their power. Or, giving that information actually distracts you from what you should be concentrating on. Or, having that moment happen concurrent with that moment actually gets in the way of both — things like that.”

Filming a movie is a work of art, and in the process of creating it, the filmmakers see what they need and don’t need to tell their story.

We still don’t exactly know how Maz came across the lightsaber, but you can read my theory regarding it here. I’m sure we’ll learn how she came across the lightsaber in Episode VIII. They better not let that question linger beyond that!

It's safe to say that since Return Of The Jedi, trailers have come a long way. Hell, there used to be a time where you showed up and all you saw was the movie. No trailers, pre-show trivia, the latest hit from some artists you've never heard of...NOTHING! What did people do while they waited?! Just sit around?

Anyway, Tom F went and modernized the Star Wars classic with a trailer similar to The Force Awakens! Check it out, and compare with the original below! Do you get the same feeling you had watching TFA's trailer? I do.

And now the original trailer...

J.J. Abrams Wishes He Were Directing STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII

J.J. Abrams did a helluva job with Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but he didn't want to take on the task of directing Episode VIII. That job ended up going to Looper director Rian Johnson, who is currently developing it. Turns out Abrams regrets his decision not to direct Episode VIII, and he wishes that he were making it.

This bit of news came from Abrams' lifelong friend Greg Grunberg, who has a small role in The Force Awakens. During an interview with The Washington Post, he said:

"He read it and said something he never, ever says. He said: ‘It’s so good, I wish I were making it.’ “He may have said something one time on Lost, with Damon [Lindelof, the co-creator], but I never hear him express regret like that.”

That's saying a lot. That says to me this upcoming film will probably be even better The Force Awakens. Why else would he express his regret like that? When Johnson was brought on board, I knew the eighth chapter in the saga would be something special. Johnson is such a great storyteller and writer.

Abrams has no plans to direct another Star Wars film at this point, but that could change somewhere down the line. He will stay on as a producer, though. In a previous interview with Abrams, he talked about Johnson's script:

"When Rian, who I admire enormously and adore, came on board, we met and talked with him about all the things we were working on and playing with, and he as a spectacular writer and director has taken those things and has written an AMAZING script that I think will be an incredible next chapter, some of which incorporating things we were thinking of and other things are things we could never of dreamed of."

Episode VIII will be released on May 26th, 2017, and I can't wait to see where they take the story next!

With the 50th anniversary of Star Trek coming up next year, Roddenberry Entertainment has announced that next year they will be releasing a ton of rare photos, memos, script pages, documents from their archives. The call the initiative “The 366 Project,” and starting in 2016 they will release one piece of Star Trek history on their social media channel every day. Over the course of the year, they will have shown fans 366 pieces.

To kick off the event, they've given EW three rare photos from the vault that have never been released to the public. You can see each piece below, and they come with a little description and commentary

This is really cool, and it will be fun to see what they reveal over the next year.

The first is an original storyboard frame from 1979’s Star Trek: The Motion Picture, which reteamed Shatner’s Kirk and his crew for a mission involving alien androids. The image shows an Enterprise docking sequence as the “sun breaks Earth’s rim.”
Also featured in the archives is a rare look at Leonard Nimoy sitting in the makeup chair as Spock for the film. The actor almost didn’t return. “Leonard had said, ‘I’m fed up, I’m not going to put those ears on again,’ ” director Robert Wise recalled, though he eventually persuaded Nimoy to re-Vulcanize himself 10 years after the original series went off the air.
“Where no man has gone before,” is perhaps even more iconic than Star Trek itself, and that’s where our last look into the archives takes us. The third image reveals a draft of the opening narration for the series.
It reads: “This is the story of the United Space Ship Enterprise. Assigned a five year patrol of our galaxy, the giant starship visits Earth colonies, regulates commerce, and explores strange new worlds and civilzations. These are its voyages … and its adventures.”

James Cameron Gives AVATAR 2 Update and Confirms Release and Shooting Dates

After all these years of knowing that an Avatar sequel was on the way, director James Cameron has yet to shoot it. He’s basically been preparing the film for production this whole time. In that time, my excitement for any kind of Avatar sequel has pretty much disappeared.

While talking to the Montreal Gazette, Cameron confirmed when the movie will be released, when he plans to start shooting it, and what he’s accomplished in the last two years of development.

“Christmas of ’17 is the target. At least, that’s what we’ve announced. But I don’t consider that to be as important as the fact that when we get all three films done, we drop them a year apart. I call it a meta-narrative that runs across the three movies. Each film stands alone, but it also tells one much larger story. We have design more or less finished, which is an enormous task. It’s been about a two-year task. [We’ve finished] all the creatures and the landscapes, and the new worlds within the world of Pandora that you see. The writing is ongoing, but almost finished. Technical development is done. Stages are done. Infrastructure. So we’re really poised to start after the first of the year.”

It’s great that he’s actually finally to the point where he can start shooting the movie. He’s obviously done a ton of work to prepare for it, and I hope it all pays off. It will be interesting to see if Fox can actually rebuild the hype for Avatar after all these years. At this point, I really don’t care that he’s making this new set of films, but maybe once we start seeing footage from it that will all change.

I’m a big fan of Cameron’s work, and I really hope he can pull this off and give us something as cool as the first Avatar film. We’ll just have to wait and see how it turns out, and if the massive audience of the first will be there for him when the sequel is released. There will be two other sequels that follow that will be released each year after.

Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, and Sigourney Weaver are all set to return to the franchise. The sequels are currently being written by Cameron along with Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman, and Shane Salerno.

The original 2009 Avatar is still the highest grossing movie of all time with $2.782 billion worldwide. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is on track to beat it, though. It'll be interesting to see if it overtakes it.

Are you excited about Avatar 2 still? Or are you going to need a little push to see it?

We've got two new promo videos from Deadpool for you to watch today. The first features Deadpool and Weasel preparing for Christmas, promoting the NBA games on Christmas day, and reminding us that there's a new trailer coming.

The second video features a flaming bag full of shit called the "'Pool Log" burning on the doorstep of a home. The video is an hour long, and it's a hilarious parody of the televised yule log that you can watch on Christmas.  I'd expect nothing less from Deadpool.

Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, DEADPOOL tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

Starring Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, T.J. Miller, Ed Skrein, Gina Carano, and Brianna HildebrandDeadpool is set to be released on February 12th, 2016.

Astrophysicist Neil DeGrasse Tyson has taken to Twitter to offer up his thoughts and observations about J.J. AbramsStar Wars: The Force Awakens. He even goes through and fact checks a bunch of stuff. His series of tweets are fun, informative, and humorous. At the same time, they kind of take the fun out of the movie.

A couple of the many things that Tyson notes is that the film uses parsecs to measure time, when they are in fact units of distance… again. He also noted that the Stormtroopers run like “they’re carrying a full load of poop in their diapers.”

I’m a big fan of this guy, and it’s always fun when he chimes in and shares his thoughts on major geek pop culture stuff like this. Enjoy the collection of tweets below!
