Simon Pegg Comments on First STAR TREK BEYOND Trailer: "I Didn't Love It"

$

0

There are a ton of Star Trek fans out there who were less than thrilled with the first trailer for Justin Lin's Star Trek Beyond, the third film in the new canon that began with J.J. Abrams' reboot back in 2009. Lin attempted to explain some of his choices and calm fans who were angered by it, but if the comment section of our post is any indication, the fans either didn't buy what Lin was saying or they chose to just ignore it altogether and continue complaining about what they think the movie will be based on a minute and a half trailer.

Perhaps they'll listen to geek god Simon Pegg instead. At the premiere of The Force Awakens, HeyUGuys caught up with Pegg — who plays Scotty and co-wrote Star Trek Beyond with Doug Jung — and asked him what he thought of Beyond's first trailer:

“It was very action-packed. It was surprising. I find it to be the marketing people sort of saying ‘Everybody come and see this film, it's full of action and fun,’ when there's a lot more to it than that. I didn't love it, because I know there's a lot more to the film. There's a lot more story and a lot more character stuff and a lot more what I would call ‘Star Trek stuff.’ But they've gotta bring a big audience in. They've gotta bang the drum. To the Star Trek fans, I'd say, hang in there, be patient."

That face he makes in the photo at the top of this page pretty much says it all. Sounds like he definitely wasn't happy with the direction the marketing team chose to go, but I can't say I blame them for cutting the trailer the way they did. It's not their job to accurately depict what kind of movie it's going to be, only to make sure as many people as possible pay to see it. Sure, you could argue they have a moral responsibility to try to sell audiences the movie that they're getting, but it seems like studios pretty much gave up on morality sometime after the Hays Code went away in the late '60s. There have been countless examples of trailers cut to make a film look like it's something it isn't in order to reach a larger audience, and this sounds like it's only the most recent instance.

If you haven't yet, go back and read my commentary on the last post I wrote about this, because it all still applies. Star Trek Beyond hits theaters on July 22nd, 2016, and hopefully we'll get a more accurate trailer sometime before then.

Why Han Solo Should Have Believed in The Force in The Original STAR WARS

$
0

Dorkly put together a funny little video pointing out something about Star Wars I'd never considered before. Han Solo famously delivers the line, "hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid," and he definitely doesn't seem like a believer in the Force in the first film. But considering his best friend's involvement in some pretty major events that involved both the Force and the Jedi, one assumes that would have come up in conversation over the years that they knew each other. I guess not.

Ridley Scott Casts Katherine Waterston as the Lead in ALIEN: COVENANT

Ridley Scott has cast the lead role in his highly anticipated Alien: Covenant. The role goes to Katherine Waterston, who I'm not that familiar with. She co-starred in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice. This will obviously be her biggest role to date, but she is also in the big screen adaptation of J.K. Rowling's Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Waterston will play Daniels in the film, but there are no details on the character other than that. She will join Michael Fassbender in the movie, who will reprise his role as David. The only official information on the film that we have comes from the following synopsis, which was previously released:

Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created in Alien with Alien: Covenant, the second chapter in a prequel trilogy that began with Prometheus -- and connects directly to Scott's 1979 seminal work of science fiction. Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world -- whose sole inhabitant is the "synthetic" David (Michael Fassbender), survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.

I assume Daniels will be part of the crew on the colony ship that discovers the dangerous planet. Alien: Covenant is the start of a trilogy of films, and Scott has also revealed that we will see every version of the Xenomorph in this movie.

Trailer for Kelsey Grammar and Andy Samberg’s Animated Film STORKS

$

Warner Bros. has released the first teaser trailer for a new animated film they are developing called Storks. The movie stars the voices of Andy Samberg, Kelsey Grammer, Keegan-Michael Key, and Jordan Peele. The story revolves around a stork baby delivery service, and it seems like it has potential to be a fun flick.

Storks was written and co-directed by Nicholas Stoller, who is the director of films such as Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Neighbors, and Get Him to the Greek. The fact that he is basically spearheading the production makes me think that this movie will be better than it looks. The guy tends to make great comedies that I enjoy.

Storks deliver babies…or at least they used to. Now they deliver packages for global internet giant Cornerstore.com. Junior, the company’s top delivery stork, is about to be promoted when he accidentally activates the Baby Making Machine, producing an adorable and wholly unauthorized baby girl. Desperate to deliver this bundle of trouble before the boss gets wise, Junior and his friend Tulip, the only human on Stork Mountain, race to make their first-ever baby drop – in a wild and revealing journey that could make more than one family whole and restore the storks’ true mission in the world.

The other director on the project is Doug Sweetland, and it’s being produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller of The LEGO Movie. The movie hits theaters on September 23rd, 2016.

Watch: Lupita Nyong'o Tells Ellen DeGeneres She Didn't Know She Was Auditioning For STAR WARS

Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o stopped by The Ellen DeGeneres Show that aired on Tuesday to talk about Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Interestingly enough, the week she received her award was the same week when the actress’ audition for Star Wars took place. But what is even more interesting is that Nyong’o did not even know that director J.J. Abrams was auditioning her for the biggest movie of the year.

During the conversation with Ellen DeGeneres, Lupita shares that:

“There was a script from something else, you know they give you a substitute script… I remember crouching around and I was using my hands as a gun, I remember that. […]It was two months later and I was in Morocco on holiday and he called me at my hotel and said, I have this motion capture role that I’m considering you for are you interested in doing motion capture and I said, yes, please.”

In the movie Nyong’o’s has the motion-pictured role of Maz Kanata – a CGI-enhanced pirate queen.

How STAR WARS: REVENGE OF THE SITH Should Have Ended

$

There were so many problems with Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and the other prequel trilogy films. I’m seriously surprised that after all of the complaints that fans have had regarding these films, George Lucas didn’t go back and change anything. Instead, he took the perfectly awesome original trilogy films and added all kinds of ridiculousness that they didn’t need. Anyway, that’s a longwinded rant for another time.

The team over at HISHE has released a new animated video that amusingly shows us how they think Revenge of the Sith should have ended. You’d think that that once Anakin Skywalker informed Master Windu that Palpatine was a Sith Lord, Windu would have been smart enough to bring a team of Jedi Knights with him when he went to confront the Supreme Chancellor, Darth Sidious.

Damon Lindelof on How THE LEFTOVERS Season 3 Will Be “Something Else Entirely”

$

0

I finally got caught up with Damon Lindelof’s HBO series The Leftovers and was blown away by what he has created. This is unlike any show I’ve ever seen before, and it is quite an emotional roller coaster. The Leftovers is a very heavy series, but one that I recommend watching if you haven’t already.

HBO recently announced that The Leftovers will have a third season, and I can’t even imagine what it will bring. In a recent interview with /Film, Lindelof talks about the third season. When asked about the season two finale, he explained that he never thought of it as a potential ending and how he sees these seasons:

“I’ll be honest with you, that idea — this could be the end — was never articulated. I think we want to design every season of The Leftovers as a novel, as opposed to a piece in a trilogy. After the first season ended, I really felt like that was it. I thought, Okay, we’ve now adapted Tom’s novel, and we ended it the exact same way Tom’s novel did. I kind of get the sense that Nora is there, holding the baby in her arms, and Laurie is probably going to leave the Guilty Remnant, even if that’s not definitive, and, at the very least, she’s reunited with Tom, and Kevin has saved Jill’s life. Kevin and Jill are all there, smiling, staring at Nora and the baby, and I could extrapolate what happens next, and I was cool with that being the ending. All these characters were in turmoil when I first met them, but now they’ve found each other.”

The third season of The Leftovers will be its last, and there’s a lot of pressure for Lindelof to give fans something amazing. The writer talks about the high expectations, and why he wanted a third season:

“When the finale aired I started getting even positive reviews saying, ‘I don’t want there to be anymore.’ I thought, Oh, shit, but I kind of do want there to be one more season. I have to look under the hood of what they’re saying and translate it and accept it at its most base ideology: you’re going to undo this season by doing a season that’s not as good. It’s sort of, like, why push your luck? That’s not the way I look at it. Am I still compelled to tell stories in this world about these people? Yes, and that’s why it was important when HBO called and said they wanted to pick up the show for a third season, I said, ‘We should also announce this is going to be the last season.’ HBO was like, ‘Let’s keep it open. We don’t have to do that.’ I said, ‘I think it’s important that we do. The critical community — and that’s the voice of the audience I keep hearing, because I’m not on Twitter or in people’s living rooms — has done a good job voicing what the audience is thinking. If the critical audience is thinking season two is enough, then if we’re going to do more, we’re not going to do much more.’”

Lindelof is just starting the development process of Season 3, so there aren’t many details he can share one what the story will entail, but he does talk about how he’s approaching it:

“The big thing we gotta figure out for season three is: Where are we going to end it? What’s the last episode of this series going to be? We’ll design the entire season basically building up to that moment. I think there was a very purposeful circularity between seasons one and two, with the ‘wherever you go, there you are’ theme of it all. We decided to end the second season very similar to the first season. The Garveys felt like they could pickup and go to this place the Departure didn’t happen, but lo and behold, the same exact thing happened. The only safe place is the place you’re surrounded by the people you love. We can’t do that again, and not just because the audience is expecting it, but because we were telling a story about geography in season two, while season three is going to be something else entirely.”

I’m curious to see how the story of these characters comes to a conclusion. I’m also interested to know how he will once again revamp the series into something else. After seeing what he’s done with the first two seasons, I’m excited for what he does with the third.

Ben Affleck Discusses How His Batman Is Different From Christian Bale's

$

0

From what we've seen of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice so far, we know that it is going to be very different from anything that Christopher Nolan has done with Batman. It looks to me like Zack Snyder wanted to take his version of Batman in a completely different direction, and fans seem to really love the direction he has taken.

In the latest issue with  Studio Ciné Live (via batman-news), there's an interview with Ben Affleck in which he discusses how his Batman is different from Christian Bale's version of the hero. He also compares Jesse Eisenberg to Oscar-winner Heath Ledger. When asked if he studied Bale's performance to distinguish himself, Affleck said:

"I don’t want to compete with other incarnations, nor do I want to emulate them. Those versions belong in another universe. Christopher Nolan used his Batman to tell a finite story. My version is different, but remains faithful to the Batman mythology and all the themes associated with it. The other difference is that Nolan’s Batman isn’t part of a universe where other superheroes exist as well. Here – because we’re working towards the Justice League – there’s Superman, and it’s a world populated with super beings. This situation generates an altogether new reality."

The actor went on to talk about the reasons behind Bruce Wayne's billionaire playboy lifestyle, explaining:

"We also play a bit more with the billionaire playboy side of the character. He lives that life at full tilt. He courts many women, owns many cars, and parties a lot. He does that as a way to fill the void in his soul. Moreover, past incarnations dealt with a straightforward search for justice. This time, Batman’s reasoning is clouded by frustration, bitterness and anger."

It sounds like this will be the darkest version of Batman's soul on the big screen yet. He then goes on to praise Eisenberg's performance in the film, and even compares it to Ledger's Joker.

"Luthor is, for me, the most interesting character in the film. He’s radically different from what we’ve seen so far. He’s grounded in reality, and he’s extraordinary. This type of film is only as good as its villain. That’s why The Dark Knight was so brilliant, because of Heath Ledger’s Joker. Jesse improves the film with each scene he’s in. He’s not your usual one-dimensional villain, there’s a whole psychology behind him."

I noticed a lot of fans were turned off by Eisenberg's performance in the last trailer that was released. I think that will all change once we see all those scenes in context with the rest of the film.

Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice opens in theater on March 25th, 2016.

Laurence Fishburne Reunites With Keanu Reeves for JOHN WICK 2

It looks like we're going to see a little Matrix reunion in John Wick 2, as Laurence Fishburne will join Keanu Reeves in the film in a small role. Fishburne was spotted on the set of the film this week in Brooklyn and was photographed by Gothamist. Fishburne’s reps confirmed that the actor was shooting a cameo.

There's no other information on Fishburne's role in the film, but it will be cool to see these two actors together again on the big screen, even if it's just for a brief moment. Hopefully, they fight because that would be amazing!

Chad Stahelski, who co-directed the original with David Leitch, is helming the sequel. The movie also co-stars Ruby Rose (Orange is the New Black, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter), Riccardo Scamarcio (Burnt), Peter Stormare (Fargo), Common (who's playing one of the villains), John Leguizamo, Ian McShane, Bridget Moynahan, Tom Sadowski, and Lance Reddick.

Reeves had this to say about the film's story in a previous interview:

“I think we have a really good premise, and it’s an organic premise. It’s basically — to me there’s John Wick and then there’s John. You know, John is the married guy whose wife just died, and that five years of his life. Then there’s John Wick, who’s the mythical assassin. In this, John Wick’s past comes and infiltrates John’s life and John Wick, in a way, has to fight for John.”

The movie will be released in 2016, and I can't wait to see what it entails!

Marvel has released an awesome piece of concept art for Captain America: Civil War that shows team Iron Man and team Captain America in the heat of battle. The piece was created by concept artists Andy Park and Ryan Meinerding, and we see Black Widow vs. Ant-Man, Scarlet Witch vs. Vision, Black Panther vs. Winter Soldier, War Machine vs. Falcon, and of course, Captain America vs. Iron Man. Hawkeye is just lingering in the background ready to help anyone who needs it, I guess. I also want to point out that the image below, which comes from Total Film, accidenta;ly calls War Machine "War Hammer." I thought that was kinda funny. The movie hits theaters on May 6th, 2016!

I’ve got another awesome animated fan film created by Milton Pool of Miltonius Arts. This is the same guy who brought us the badass short that featured an epic battle between Thor and Zombie Hulk, which you can watch here.

The latest video pits Master Chief from Halo against Kylo Ren from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and the outcome is freakin’ fantastic! It’s packed full of fun fast-paced action-packed greatness!

If you liked Thor Vs. Zombie Hulk, you’re gonna really enjoy this one. Unfortunately, we don't get to see how the fight ends... yet. You have to vote on who you would like to see win so he can finish it! I can’t wait to see what Milton does next!

Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck talk more about the characters the play in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice as well as the costumes they wear. The interviews were conducted by the French magazine Studio Cine Live.

Earlier today we posted a part of this interview with Affleck in which he talks about how his version of Batman is different from Christian Bale's version, and how he compares Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor to Heath Ledger's Joker. This other part of the interview focuses on some other aspects of both heroes in the story, their challenges, and how the film speaks to the world we live in.

There's a lot of great stuff in these interviews worth reading, especially if you're excited about seeing the movie. You will find a translation of both interviews below thanks to Batman-News

Ben Affleck

Studio Ciné Live: If you had to introduce your Batman to somebody who doesn’t know the character, how would you describe him?

Ben Affleck: Usually, the films show Batman starting off, or in the prime of his career. Here, you’re dealing with an older version, a guy at the end of his journey. He’ll find meaning in his own life during his conflict with Superman. He really thinks Superman is an existential menace, and he believes destroying him will be his legacy. We also play a bit more with the billionaire playboy side of the character. He lives that life at full tilt. He courts many women, owns many cars, and parties a lot. He does that as a way to fill the void in his soul. Moreover, past incarnations dealt with a straightforward search for justice. This time, Batman’s reasoning is clouded by frustration, bitterness and anger.

SCL: How did you react when you first saw yourself in the Bat suit?

BA: When you’re reading the script, you’re wondering how you’re going to play Batman. Then you put on the suit, you look in the mirror and you tell yourself: “There, that’s it.” The suit does all the work for you. In fact, you’re not playing Batman, but Bruce Wayne. That’s when the character becomes complicated and interesting. Batman himself is already a strong emblematic figure. It would be a mistake to overplay him.

SCL: What do you think of the two suits you get to wear in the movie?

BA: I really like their design. They’re faithful to Frank Miller’s vision in The Dark Knight Returns comic. In fact the movie borrows a lot from that comic, as noted by our use of the massive and very symbolic battle armor. They’re pretty heavy and cumbersome in the end. The challenge was to create fight scenes where I could move with ease, which is tough. The suits have to look cool and be functional at the same time. One thing that couldn’t be done before but is finally possible now is to wear the suit without the arms. They put motion sensors on my arms to recreate the rest of the suit in post production. And that allowed me to move my arms freely without looking like a robot during fight scenes. I think it was the first time an actor could have all that flexibility and move his head in a Batsuit!

SCL: What was the biggest challenge for you personally on this film?

BA: That filming took so long – 140 days – and that everything was so compartmentalized, fragmented. It was tough to recall where a particular scene fit in the overall story, or to understand those moments that were stuck between SFX heavy shots which would be completed in post. I’m not used to that type of filmmaking, I can’t switch to cruise control, I have to restart the engine every time. For instance today I’ll only be filming shots of about ten seconds or so, which will then be edited to build an entire scene. I’m more used to shooting a whole scene in order to try different things. This time around it’s very technical, and you don’t really have much freedom amid all those visual effects.

SCL: Does Batman v Superman speak about the current world?

BA: I don’t think this film has any sort of lesson, but it’s more than just entertainment, it’s also trying to show that there are real consequences to violence. When a building collapses, people die, and those are lives lost forever. This film also shows that fear is the enemy of us all. Fear brings out the worst in us. When we fear powerful people because we think they might destroy us, we tend to use that to justify any decision we might be tempted to make. There are some parallels with preemptive strikes, and things like that. It allows us to analyze how we think about what we do, when facing a threat. That’s very relevant to what’s going on in the world right now. The film tackles pertinent themes.

SCL: in conclusion, in a fight between Superman and Batman, who wins?

BA: Well… When you see the film, you’ll realize it’s more complicated than that! There’s no real winner. I like the idea that Truth is the winner.

Henry Cavill

Studio Ciné Live: How has Superman evolved since Man of Steel?

Henry Cavill: Superman himself isn’t that different. He does however have to deal with a new set of problems because he’s now been revealed to the world. This film is more about how the world in general – and Batman in particular – sees this alien, and less about the evolution of Superman. We’re seeing Superman and Batman together for the first time in a movie, with flesh-and-blood actors. They’re two sides of the same coin. They have the same goal, but use very different methods to achieve it. Understandably, that leads them to clash with one another, and their conflict is a historic moment.

SCL: How do you plan to portray Clark Kent, the journalist?

HC: Comparisons with Christopher Reeve’s clumsy Clark Kent are inevitable. My Clark Kent is trying to be as small and invisible as possible. If you’re awkward and spilling things constantly, people are going to notice you, and that’s not the best way to go unseen. You have to admit, it’s not a remarkable disguise, just a pair of glasses. He’d like to think that no one will believe he could be Superman. How could such a delicate flower be a living god? Preposterous.

Superman’s suit will evolve from one film to the next, even if they’re just minor updates.

SCL: How is the one featured in Batman v Superman different?

HC: It’s easier to take it off when I have to relieve myself! Suddenly my life is much less complicated.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters March 25th, 2016.
