Honest Trailer For JURASSIC WORLD

honest-trailer-for-jurassic-world

Colin Trevorrow's Jurassic World did pretty OK at the box office this past summer. It only made over 1.6 billion dollars. I loved this movie and thought it was a great sequel to Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park. The movie obviously isn't without its faults, though, and Screen Junkies has a lot of fun pointing them all out in their latest episode of Honest Trailers.

Relive the dino-sized summer blockbuster that left audiences cheering at the awesome dinosaur action - and groaning at pretty much everything else.

Jennifer Lawrence Bails on THE ROSIE PROJECT, Joins Mystery Movie For Darren Aronofsky

Jennifer Lawrence sure is keeping busy these days. When she's not starring in or promoting a new movie, she's hanging out with her best bud and writing pal Amy Schumer and tackling the issue of Hollywood's gender-based wage gap. But the Oscar-winning actress can't do it all, and THR reports that she's dropped out of Richard Linklater's The Rosie Project, a movie that was written specifically with her voice in mind. But at the same time, Variety says she's looking to star in a mysterious indie film for Darren Aronofsky.

I didn't even know that Linklater had boarded The Rosie Project, which tells the story of a professor with Asperger's who designs a "wife project," a questionnaire meant to help him find the kind of no-nonsense woman he's been looking for. But the free-spirited Rosie may prove that love can come from the most unsuspecting places. (500) Days of Summer writers Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber wrote the screenplay, and at one point, Phil Lord and Chris Miller were in talks to direct. The studio is looking to recast the role immediately since this is considered something of a priority for them.

As for the Aronofsky movie, Lawrence seems to be getting back to her roots in the indie film world, where she broke out with Winter's Bone back in 2010. She's mixed the occasional small movie in with her blockbuster fare, but depending on the scope of this film — which we don't know a damn thing about at this point, other than the director is hoping to shoot it in spring of 2016 — this could be a nice return to true small scale filmmaking following the FX-heavy X-Men and Hunger Games movies. We'll let you know more about that one as soon as we hear any concrete details.

Hideously Cool Poster Art For David Cronenberg's THE FLY

One of the most disgusting things I've ever seen in film that still haunts me to this day is watching the transformation that Jeff Goldblum goes through in David Cronenberg's The Fly. I had never seen anything like that in a movie before, and it freaked me the hell out! It's the first time I think I ever felt physically sick while watching a movie. Mind you, the film came out in 1986 and I was probably around 11 or 12 years old when I first saw it. It sure did leave an impression on me.

I have a great piece of poster art for the film that was created for MondoCon by artist Johnny Dombrowski. The poster goes on sale sometime today, so make sure to follow Mondo on Twitter to find out when it's available.

This is a 24″x36″ screen print that comes in a hand-numbered edition of 265, and it will cost you $40. Here's a video montage created by Monster Montage of all the wonderful grossness that this movie had to offer.

“In 10.3 seconds, Jesse Owens changed history.”

Focus Features has released a teaser trailer for their Jesse Owens biopic called Race. The movie stars Stephan James as the legendary Olympian and the brief footage centers on Owen running the 100-meter race at the 1936 Berlin Olympics where he won four Olympic gold medals and shut down Adolf Hitler’s vision of Aryan supremacy. I love the story of Owens, and it's about time we got an inspiring movie that told the story of this man. It looks like could be good!

Based on the incredible true story of Jesse Owens, the legendary athletic superstar whose quest to become the greatest track and field athlete in history thrusts him onto the world stage of the 1936 Olympics, where he faces off against Adolf Hitler’s vision of Aryan supremacy. “Race” is an enthralling film about courage, determination, tolerance, and friendship, and an inspiring drama about one man’s fight to become an Olympic legend.

The movie was directed by Stephen Hopkins (Predator 2, Blown Away, The Ghost and the Darkness) from a script by Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse. Race also stars Jason Sudeikis, Jeremy Irons, Carice van Houten, Shanice Banton, and William Hurt.

The movie hits theaters on February 19th, 2016.

Two Guys Opened a Will Ferrell-Themed Bar in New York City

I recently took a trip to New York City to write about The Lord of the Rings live concert, and though I'm very happy living in Los Angeles, there's nothing that makes me want to be a permanent NYC resident than hearing that two guys (Zach Neil and Brian Link) just opened a Will Ferrell-themed bar called Stay Classy New York. I'm one of the biggest fans of Anchorman you'll ever meet, and I would love to be a regular at this place.

The drink menu includes things like YOU’RE MY BOY BLUE! (Hendricks Gin, Blue curacao, Sweet and Sour, Pineapple Juice), SHAKE AND BAKE (shaken whiskey and sour mix with a splash of ginger beer, served with cherries and lime wedge), GLASS CASE OF EMOTION (muddled rosemary and peach, whiskey, lemon juice, simple syrup), and the MUGATU MULE (tequila reposado, lime, bitters, ginger beer), and there's Ferrell-themed art all over the walls. I want to go right now. New Yorkers — let me live vicariously through you. Check this place out and report back!

People interviewed the owners, who said:

“In business, there’s always a chance that you lose your money and fail, so we said we might as well do something that we think is funny and represents what we love [sic] that way if we lose we can still laugh about it. Will Ferrell movies are our favorite — we love the man and his work — so it was easy for us to create this landscape of ridiculous things and theme it accordingly.”

We are open Monday -Saturday from 4pm and starting November 12pm! #stayclassybar #stayclassynyc

THOR: RAGNAROK Is Reportedly Marvel's Darkest Story Yet, and More Characters Revealed

thor-ragnarok-is-reportedly-marvel-darkest-story-yet-and-more-characters-revealed

Earlier this week we learned that Bruce Banner/Hulk might appear in Thor: Ragnarok. Now we have some additional information about the tone and another character that might appear in it.

We know Thor: Ragnarok would be a dark film. After all, the comic book story arc features an apocalyptic battle that the Realm of Asgard has experienced over and over and over again. Ragnarok is a cycle of death and rebirth.

The sequel is being written by Christopher Yost and Craig Kyle, and according to Birth.Movies.Death., the script is the darkest one yet for Marvel, which apparently is one of the reasons why they brought on Taika Waititi to direct it. The site says that the studio felt he could "bring a touch of lightness" to the film.

The report goes on to confirm that Hulk will be a part of the movie, and that he will have a major role. Apparently, Thor and Hulk will be taking "a cosmic road trip together, Hope and Crosby style." While on their adventure, they'll meet the group called the Valkyries, and that could lead to them coming in contact with the heroine Valkyrie, and her nemesis, The Enchantress! Marvel is reportedly "looking to cast some great women in this movie."

I've been waiting for Enchantress to make her appearance since Thor. It was only a matter of time before that included her, and I hope this news is true because I really want to see her make her debut in the MCU. The more I learn about this movie, the more pumped up I get for it!

Thor: Ragnarok is set to be released on July 28th, 2017.

Today Kaulder is the only one of his kind remaining, and has spent centuries hunting down rogue witches, all the while yearning for his long-lost loved ones. However, unbeknownst to Kaulder, the Queen Witch is resurrected and seeks revenge on her killer causing an epic battle that will determine the survival of the human race.

Lionsgate Developing Z-MEN Movie Based on Comic Set in NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD Universe

About six months ago, a relatively new company called Double Take launched the Ultimate Night of the Living Dead, a series of three comic books set in the same universe as George Romero's classic zombie film. One of those comics is Z-Men, written by Jeff McComsey, and we recently published a one on one interview with him in which he spoke about the comic in detail. Now a Lionsgate press release reveals that the studio is teaming with Double Take to bring Z-Men to the big screen as a feature film. Here's the quick synopsis of the comic:

Dead and/or alive. LBJ orders the Secret Service to bring him back a Zombie. It’s 1966 and the Oval Office is in an uproar; there’s been a spree of mass murders in Western Pennsylvania (and reports of the dead returning to life). President Lyndon B. Johnson assigns the head of the Secret Service to send agents into the field to investigate. Agents Stuart and Clancy are given the opportunity to serve their country and see if the zombie apocalypse has indeed begun.

There's no word yet on whether McComsey will be involved in the film, who the studio has in mind for a director, or any potential actors who may be interested or attached, but we'll keep you updated on the latest as soon as we hear anything.

Fan Builds Unliftable Replica of Thor's Hammer and Pranks People

One of the most amusing parts in Avengers: Age of Ultron was watching all those powerful superheroes trying to life Thor's hammer, Mjolnir. Of course, none of them were worthy (until a late plot twist revealed that a new team member had what it took to wield it).

YouTuber Sufficiently Advanced decided to have a little fun with people, and he made a cool high tech replica of Mjolnir that can only be lifted by himself. How is this possible? Well, it only been programmed to work with his fingerprints. It's pretty amusing watching people try to lift this thing.

Universal's Reboot of THE MUMMY Might Feature a Female Monster

Universal Pictures is still in the process of developing their shared universe of classic monsters. The first planned movie in this series is a reboot of The Mummy. We haven't really heard any details regarding the project until today.

THR is reporting that there's going to be a major change from the original film — it will feature a female monster, and she will apparently come with a unique backstory.

The Mummy was played by Boris Karloff in the original 1932 film, and in the 1999 remake he was played by Arnold Vosloo. The site's sources say "the gender of the monster in the new film, which is set in the modern day, likely will depend on casting, expected to happen in the next couple of months." They go on to reveal that there are two story options for the movie, "one that would feature a female monster, and one that would feature a male."

I could care less if the Mummy is a male of female, as long as the story is good! The one thing I don't care for is the fact that the movie will be set in modern day. These monster movies should be period pieces set in the past. But what do I know? I'm just a huge fan of these Universal Monsters.

Alex Kurtzman is set to direct the film from a script written by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus). The Mummy reboot is set for release on March 24th, 2017 with an Untitled Universal Monster Movie set to be released on March 30th, 2018.

Review: Steven Spielberg's BRIDGE OF SPIES, Starring Tom Hanks

$

Whatever imagery the title Bridge of Spies conjures in your mind are likely a heck of a lot more thrilling than what appears in Steven Spielberg's latest film, a studious spy tale that's about as far from thrilling as it gets. Still, this is a Spielberg movie we're talking about here, and there's plenty to like: it's an insightful, noir-tinged, captivating recreation of a historical event I hadn't heard about before. I never thought I'd describe one of Spielberg's movies as "educational," apart from maybe just a pure filmmaking perspective, but here we are.

It's the height of the Cold War. Tom Hanks plays James Donovan, a Brooklyn lawyer unanimously chosen to give suspected Soviet spy Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance) a good defense when his case goes to trail. However, the country's court of public opinion — which includes the judge and Donovan's own wife (Amy Ryan) — has already come to its verdict: Abel should be hanged for his crimes. But Donovan, a Spielbergian hero who refuses to back down in the face of overwhelming dissent, convinces the judge to sentence Abel to jail time in case one of America's soldiers is shot down behind enemy lines; if that happens, he argues, the government will have the option to trade prisoners. Of course that's exactly what happens, and Donovan — working with the CIA but not technically a government employee to avoid culpability if anything goes wrong — ends up traveling to Berlin in order to negotiate the exchange personally, going rogue in an effort to also secure the life of a captured American student.

Hanks, in his fourth time starring for Spielberg, does typically strong work as Donovan, proving yet again that he's this generation's Jimmy Stewart. In fact, the director's classical filmmaking makes the whole movie feel like it's from another time, like it would have fit right in with some films of the 1960s. Some of the writing (from scribes Matt Chapman and the Coen Brothers), with its repetition of jokes and obvious depiction of themes, feels like a throwback to an earlier era of film history, and the movie's gee-whiz idealism hearkens back to something Frank Capra might have made. Spielberg is certainly no stranger to this kind of film, and while I much prefer him doing bombastic action adventures or science fiction yarns, this feels much more in line with something like 2012's Lincoln: a relatively small scale character piece about a man who has to make tough decisions in order to stand up for what's right.

The movie starts out great, with a gripping opening scene as the FBI tracks Abel and tries to catch him in the act of espionage. Rylance's performance is one of the film's highlights, and his perpetually raised eyebrows, calm demeanor, and quiet charm immediately endear him to the audience. It's a perfect piece of casting, and the fact that the audience likes this man plays very much into Spielberg's desire to paint the two superpowers of the Cold War as being more similar than they imagine. There's some editing and cross-cutting that makes that thematic connection perhaps a bit more explicit than necessary, but this is not a subtle film: it wears its heart on its sleeve, and Thomas Newman's score is so on-the-nose it may as well be a pair of well-worn glasses. The first chunk of the story, which covers Abel's trial and the vilification of Donovan in the public, contains the main thrust of the film's overall message, drawing parallels to our post-9/11 treatment of captives in Guantanamo Bay and allusions to Edward Snowden's Earth-shattering reveal about our own government's spy practices.

But most of the story follows Donovan managing the tricky details of the prisoner exchange in Berlin's back rooms, and though the finale is satisfying enough, the pacing slows to a snail's pace as he goes back and forth from one side to the other, relaying information he's just learned and trying to figure out the next step. This is very much a film comprised of people sitting around talking, and while I found the true-life story compelling, the movie's draggy middle took the wind out of its sails for me a little. A short sequence of an American plane being shot down and the square-jawed pilot's (Austin Stowell) narrow escape is the only explosive moment in the movie's 135 minute run time. The rest is a pretty straightforward discourse about who's trading who for whom, where the prisoners need to be at what time, etc. It's a scaled down exploration of morality that likely won't top anyone's list of favorite Spielberg movies, but it's hard to complain when what will surely go down as one of The Beard's most average films is as good as this.

Bill Murray Croons in New Trailer and Photos For Netflix's A VERY MURRAY CHRISTMAS

Is there anyone out there who doesn't like Bill Murray? He's a multi-talented performer, loves pulling pranks and doing the unexpected, and might be one of the most charming people on the planet. He's right up there with Tom Hanks as being practically impossible to despise.

I'm a big fan of Murray's, and Christmas is my favorite time of the year, so I'm thrilled about the upcoming Netflix special A Very Murray Christmas, which reunites the actor with his Lost in Translation director Sofia Coppola. We saw a brief teaser for the special a few months ago, but it didn't really give us a sense of what the actual final product would be like; now Netflix has released a new trailer that features Murray crooning the classic Christmas tune "Let It Snow" and some footage of him hanging out with a bunch of cool people like George Clooney, Amy Poehler, Rashida Jones, Chris Rock, and tons more. We also have a release date: December 4th.

This might become annual Christmas viewing in my house. Are you looking forward to it as much as I am?

This winter, Bill Murray brings an extra-special dose of holiday cheer to Netflix with the premiere of an all-star musically-driven holiday special, A Very Murray Christmas. Set inside New York City’s iconic Carlyle hotel, A Very Murray Christmas opens with Murray preparing to host a live, international holiday broadcast. After a blizzard shuts down the production, he makes the best of the situation by singing and celebrating with friends, hotel employees and anyone else who drops by.

Review: CRIMSON PEAK Is Not What You Think

$

0

If you intend to see Crimson Peak, I'm telling you this not to dissuade you, but to prepare you:

Crimson Peak is not a horror film.

Don't worry, you aren't dense or anything. You would've had no idea, given the film's marketing.

Crimson Peak is not a "ghost story," but rather "a story about ghosts." The line comes from one of the opening scenes in which Edith (Mia Wasikowska) is explaining her novel to a publisher in her town. The book being discussed throughout the film is so incredibly meta that you feel like the opening exchange is a direct conversation the writer/director had with Universal.

"So it's a ghost story...maybe we could add romance to it?"

And thus Crimson Peak is marketed as a spooky ghost film from the bizarre monster maker of the 21st century, Guillermo del Toro, when actually this film is more akin to Pan's Labyrinth. I liked Pan's Labyrinth! However, that wasn't the kind of movie I was led to believe this was, and it wasn't what I signed on for walking into the theater.

So instead of really diving into the 18th century adult-centered fairy tale I was presented...I kept looking at my watch wondering when the scary would happen. Sure, there were a few jumps and spooks...but the jump shots I saw assured me something terrifying would be coming!

There was plenty to keep me happy while watching. The set and visuals are incredible (as always) and the contrast between how a beautiful house can look so devastatingly creepy at night was one of my favorite points of the film. I could easily see how twisted and frightening things could get down the road!

Unfortunately the big scare never happens, even though the movie features ghosts. You're watching a film with a compelling story with supernatural elements. As a frame of reference, I had trouble sleeping after watching the Insidious series; I may have jumped twice during this film and immediately went to bed upon getting home.

And no disrespect to del Toro, but I don't understand why he fought so hard to have this film rated R. To be honest, this film was PG-13 down to the one F-word dropped in the film. The only scene I could potentially see as R rated was a sex scene that wouldn't have made me blush had I watched with family. The ghosts are disturbing looking, but not nearly enough to warrant that.

Given what I know now, I can see why Universal wanted the change. This film is essentially a gothic love story. It fits right in with something you'd read from Edgar Allan Poe. If it was presented like that, I think the film would be much more well loved than what people will undoubtedly think they're going to see this weekend (ie, Loki in a horror film).

Now that I've gotten all that out of the way, let's break down performances. Tom Hiddleston and Jessica Chastain steal the show. Everyone else essentially plays second fiddle when they are on screen, and that's not a dig on the acting...they're just that good.

I don't want you to think I hated this film — I did like it. My enjoyment was heavily marred, however, by being led to believe this film was something it wasn't. I've already read a lot of positive reviews about this film, but none are really mentioning this. My thought is if you go in knowing what this film is, you will most certainly enjoy it.

James Gunn Teases Some GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 Details

During a recent Q&A that director James Gunn held on Facebook, he offered some updates regarding Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. There's nothing major revealed, but he did tease a few things. The director confirmed that casting on the film is almost complete and that they will shoot the film for 10 months in Atlanta starting in February 2016.

When asked about the characters who will be introduced in the film, he revealed that there will be at least one new character:

"I’m not going to give names and I won’t give numbers either, but there will be at least one new character in Guardians of the Galaxy."

As for Adam Warlock's involvement in Guardians of the Galaxy and whether or not the character could play a part in Avengers: Infinity War, he said:

"You guys gotta wait and see... Everything’s going to be different in the ‘Infinity Wars.’ I’m a lot more concerned with ‘Vol. 2’ than I am with ‘Infinity Wars.’ The way the movie [’Vol. 2’] is structured and made – it really is a story unto itself. It’s not about leading up to anything else. It’s about the Guardians and their lives."

Gunn was then asked if he will continue his involvement with Marvel after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2:

"Probably! If the second one does well. You guys will have to go see the second one. There’s a lot of other Marvel cosmic properties that I’d be interested in helping usher to the screen. I talk about it a lot but, if I said too much here, Marvel might track me down and shoot me.

"As long as I’m working with Marvel, I’ll probably be working on ‘Guardians’ and ‘Guardians’-related projects."

It's good to hear that Gunn is hopefully going to stick with Marvel, and help bring more Marvel cosmic properties to the big screen. The guy obviously knows what he's doing with the characters in this part of the universe.
