Marvel's LUKE CAGE Series Plot and Character Details Revealed

Marvel recently confirmed the news that Alfre Woodard (12 Years a Slave, Annabelle) has joined the cast of its Luke Cage Netflix series. That official announcement came with a lot of information regarding the show's plot and some of its characters. Let's start off with the official plot summary for the series:

After a sabotaged experiment leaves him with super strength and unbreakable skin, Luke Cage (Mike Colter) becomes a fugitive trying to rebuild his life in modern day Harlem, New York City. But he is soon pulled out of the shadows and must fight a battle for the heart of his city--forcing him to confront a past he had tried to bury.

The announcement goes on to shed some light on the characters that will be in the series. Woodard will play a character named Mariah Dillard, who is a local Harlem politician. She is also the cousin of Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes (Mahershala Ali). Dillard is "looking to bring a new era of change to the streets she grew up on. Her personal life and professional career are thrown into turmoil by both Harlem's newest hero Luke Cage as well as her cousin Cottonmouth's nefarious acts." It is rumored that Dillard will end up being the villain Black Mariah.

Executive Producer/Head of Marvel Television Jeph Loeb talked about Woodard taking on Dillard, saying:

“Alfre has an incredible, unique, and intimidating presence on screen that makes her perfect as a leader of the Harlem community. We couldn’t be more excited that an actress as celebrated and talented as Alfre has decided to join us on this adventure.”

Other actors involved with the series include Frank Whaley (Pulp Fiction, Broken Arrow, Gotham) in the role of Detective Rafael Scarfe. Simone Missick will play Missy, described by Deadline as "a woman with a strong sense of justice." There's a good chance that she is actually playing the metahuman private detective Misty Knight, but we'll have to wait and see if that's how it plays out. Theo Rossi (Sons of Anarchy) was cast in the role of Shades, who is a career criminal that is another villain Cage has to deal with. Rosario Dawson will reprise her role of Claire Temple from Daredevil.

There's no word on when the series will premiere, but I imagine it will happen in the fall of 2016.

PACIFIC RIM 2 Delay Confirmed, Production Halted Indefinitely

The Hollywood Reporter has published a behind-the-scenes look at the relationship between Universal, Legendary Pictures, and Warner Bros., and it's fascinating stuff if you follow the business side of the industry. I'd recommend reading the whole thing if you have time, but for those who are only looking for the highlight reel, the most important aspect that came to the forefront involves the future of Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim 2: Maelstrom.

A report last week indicated that production on the sequel had been delayed until sometime in 2016, but THR says "the project has been halted indefinitely and will be pushed back (if it gets made at all)." That last part may be speculation on their part, but it might be an assessment coming from talks with sources close to the studio; basically at this point, the future of the movie is anything but assured. This could very easily turn into another one of those projects that falls into development hell and ends up never being made, despite getting inches from the starting line.

This is confirmation that the film is in big trouble, and my hope is for one of two outcomes: 1) Universal and Legendary change their minds and quickly set a new start date for Pacific Rim 2, or 2) that they immediately and definitively state that the film will never happen so del Toro doesn't have to waste any more time on it before ultimately moving on to his next project. If half of the things he's spent so much time developing actually came out, he'd be considered a prolific filmmaker instead of one who makes one movie every two to five years.

GAME OF THRONES Emilia Clarke Clarified Her Comments About Sex Scenes

On Monday, I wrote about Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke's stance on sex scenes in film and television — and how she "can't stand" them — but this morning the 28-year-old actress took to her Instagram page to say she was quoted out of context and to provide clarification about her thoughts on the topic:

I was followed into a party by a journalist who asked me a question about female empowerment and then quoted me entirely out of context for an outlet I didn’t agree to speak with. So I feel now, with the beauty of Instagram I should clarify my statements, if for nothing else than for posterity. In drama, if a nude scene forwards a story or is shot in a way that adds insight into characters, I’m perfectly fine with it. Sometimes explicit scenes are required and make sense for the characters/story, as they do in Westeros. If it’s gratuitous for gratuitous sake, then I will discuss with a director on how to make it more subtle. In either case, like a good Mother of Dragons, I’m always in control. #dracarys #bodiesmaybetemplesbutmindsarewhatmatter #MODforreal

It's always better to hear quotes straight from actors themselves rather than potentially have things be taken out of context, and that's one of the best things about social media these days. Something comes out about you in an article that you don't agree with? You can instantly clarify your statement directly to the world, without having to wait for another interview to bring up the same topic. Our comment section was very divided about this last time around, so I'd be interested to hear what you all think about Clarke's clarification here.

Paramount is Bringing Charlie Kaufman's Stop-Motion ANOMALISA To Theaters in December

Charlie Kaufman is the brilliant writer of films like Being John Malkovich, Adaptation., and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. He made his directorial debut with Synecdoche, New York back in 2008 (he also wrote that film), and now he's moved into stop-motion animation for his newest film, Anomalisa. The movie has been playing at film festivals for the past few weeks and critics and attendees are raving about it, calling it one of the best films of the year. Here's the synopsis:

Michael Stone, husband, father and respected author of "How May I Help You Help Them?," is a man crippled by the mundanity of his life. On a business trip to Cincinnati, where he's scheduled to speak at a convention of customer service professionals, he checks into the Fregoli Hotel. There, he is amazed to discover a possible escape from his desperation in the form of an unassuming Akron baked goods sales rep, Lisa, who may or may not be the love of his life. A beautifully tender and absurdly humorous dreamscape, from the brilliant minds of Charlie Kaufman (SYNECDOCHE, NEW YORK ) and Duke Johnson ("Community" episode, Abed's Uncontrollable Christmas), this stop-motion animation wonder features the vocal cast of Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tom Noonan and David Thewlis and a stirring strings-based score by Carter Burwell.  The darkly comedic and surreal stop-motion journey of a man's long night of the soul, ANOMALISA confirms Charlie Kaufman's place amongst the most important of American filmmakers, and announces Duke Johnson as a major creative force.

I've seen several people already call it a masterpiece, and apparently the people at Paramount agree, because they've just announced that they'll be distributing the movie in theaters starting with a limited release on December 30th in New York and Los Angeles. This is great news for people who decry the constant release of mega-budget blockbusters, because this movie definitely doesn't seem like something a major studio would distribute and it'll give the film an opportunity to be seen by millions of people.

The movie (which, here's some trivia for you, was executive produced by Dan Harmon from Community among others) raised some of its funds through Kickstarter, and I've embedded the campaign's original pitch video below:

Review: THE BASTARD EXECUTIONER Is A Brutal But Solid Watch

You'll get ten minutes into The Bastard Executioner before you begin to think it's a Game of Thrones rip off. Supernatural elements, weird dragonlike creatures, naked women, and sex. It's all there and like me you'll roll your eyes and contemplate tuning out right then and there. Unlike you, I had to continue as I'm writing a review for the new FX series, so I pressed on, and I'm glad I did.

While there are bound to be comparisons between The Bastard Executioner and HBO's reigning medieval drama, the two are widely different in concept and execution. For those who know next to nothing about the show, here's a brief synopsis provided by IMDB:

“Bastard Executioner tells the story of a warrior knight in King Edward The Thirds charge who is broken by the ravages of war and vows to lay down his sword. But when that violence finds him again, he is forced to pick up the bloodiest sword of all. ”

In the past year, we've been made to feel bad about the plight of lords and knights as they battle their way through politics and supremacy. The Bastard Executioner reminds us that almost all of these guys were pricks! Which of them wept for the soldiers that fought for the land they conquered? Not a one. In fact, they probably hired one of the survivors to wipe their butt after they took a dump.

The Bastard Executioner tells a fictional tale in true to life events. 14th century Wales was rife with rebellion against the English, who were occupying at the time. I won't lie: I don't know s*** about the Welsh rebellion, but it's cool to be watching something that actually happened. It also makes some of it a little hard to watch.

What TBE lacks in showing full breasts and softcore porn, it rectifies with particularly brutal violence. Kids will die, and you'll see it. Pregnant mothers will die, and you'll see it. Heads will be split open by the heels of feet, and you've seen it before in The Walking Dead, but that doesn't make it easier to watch. It makes you really realize how tame GOT can be violence-wise. This show is visceral, gory, and bloody in a refreshing way. You'll squirm watching a couple of these scenes, and that's a good thing.

Two hours in, I equate the current heroes to Robin Hood and his Merry Men meets The Punisher. There's no thieving...just straight up brutal murder in the cause of vengeance against a group who undoubtedly deserves it.

That being said, I wasn't at all into it's leading man Wilkin Brattle (Lee Jones) until an hour and a half into the premiere. Once the story got rolling, however, he certainly picked up his game. While he may look like a medieval Thor without a hammer, he fit the part well in the second act and I'm invested to see how things play out for him.

Two performances kept me watching in its entirety. The presumed villain Milus Corbett (aka True Blood's Stephen Moyer) stole the show from start to finish. His complicated performance gave the show life in its duller moments, and only heightened when things got good! I also absolutely loved the character of the executioner. His complicated demeanor, his weirdly abusive love...it lined up a great story. Unfortunately (at least for the time being) it doesn't look like we'll be seeing him.

Something this show handles really well is music. Okay, I didn't like the rock guitar in the opening of the show, but the medieval choir segments were on point, and this soundtrack only enhances the show!

The show also excels at crude humor. Not all jokes hit, but one in particular had me laughing throughout the show.

If there was any complaint I had, it'd be that the show was at times bogged down by somewhat unnecessary dialogue in some segments. Keep in mind, however, that it was the pilot so there has to be a fair bit of exposition to get the show going.

Overall, I'm going to say if you like violence and stories of vengeance, watch this opener start to finish. You'll find all you're looking for and what looks to be a decent story as well. I'll for sure be sticking with this one. Let's just hope things only go up from here.

Chris Hemsworth vs. Whale in Trailer For IN THE HEART OF THE SEA

Chris Hemsworth takes on a giant whale in director Ron Howard's upcoming period thriller In the Heart of the Sea. The story is inspired by the true story of the whaling ship Essex, which was attacked by a sperm whale in 1820. After the ship was destroyed, the crew was stranded in the middle of the ocean for 90 days. The whale was only the first of many challenges the crew would face. This is the story that led to Herman Melville‘s creation of Moby Dick

We have a third new trailer for you to watch today, and this movie looks incredible. It looks like it could be one of Howard's most visually stunning films. On top of that, it looks insanely intense! The movie also stars Benjamin Walker, Cillian Murphy, Ben Whishaw, Tom Holland, Brendan Gleeson, and Jordi Molla. Here's the official synopsis:

In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will, and an almost human sense of vengeance. The real-life maritime disaster would inspire Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick. But that told only half the story. “In the Heart of the Sea” reveals the encounter’s harrowing aftermath, as the ship’s surviving crew is pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive. Braving storms, starvation, panic and despair, the men will call into question their deepest beliefs, from the value of their lives to the morality of their trade, as their captain searches for direction on the open sea and his first mate still seeks to bring the great whale down.

The movie is set to be released on December 11th.

FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF 8-Bit Cinema

Ferris Bueller's Day Off is one of the all-time great teen comedies, and one of my personal favorite movies. Just a few months ago, we recorded an episode of The 5Cast in which we ranked our favorite moments from the John Hughes classic, and I loved the movie so much in high school that I got a license plate that said DAY OFF. Now Cinefix has given it the 8-bit cinema treatment, and it's fun to see what scenes they included and how accurate they could be given the restrictions of the blocky graphics. Be sure to listen for the the great little musical touches, too, like the I Dream of Jeannie theme song playing in the background at one point. Check it out below:

Rumor: Emily Blunt Tops Disney's Shortlist For New MARY POPPINS Movie

Disney earned some ire online earlier this week when it was announced that director Rob Marshall is making another Mary Poppins movie set twenty years after the first film (but it's somehow not a sequel, even though it involves Mary and the Banks family). You can get all of the details here, but one of the last things I said in my write-up was that I can't imagine anyone being able to capture the perfection of Julie Andrews' performance in the original movie. But apparently Disney has a big imagination, and if this newest rumor is to be believed, the studio is eyeing Emily Blunt for the role.

Den of Geek has the report, which claims "Blunt is on Disney's radar for the movie, and that she may even be the frontrunner for the role." The actress worked with Marshall on Into The Woods, she has some pipes, and she's being considered for prime parts after her terrific work in Edge of Tomorrow (and, if early reviews are true, the upcoming Sicario), so this sounds like one of those common sense rumors that may not end up being true, but has enough pieces in place for it to conceivably be true. Either way, I'd be interested to hear what Blunt thinks about taking on such an iconic character. I love her work, but following Julie Andrews in that role has to be daunting for anybody.

New Intel on KING KONG VS. GODZILLA - Possible Team-Up, Size, and Connections

$
0
0

Last week we learned that Legendary Pictures would be developing a King Kong Vs. Godzilla movie with Warner Bros. We have a couple bits of information to share with you regarding the lead up to that movie.

The intel comes from THR's studio insiders. They claim that the first connection in this giant monster universe they are building will come in Kong: Skull Island. Apparently the current script they have for it makes reference to the Monarch company from Godzilla that Gareth Edwards introduced us to in his 2014 film. This will plant the seed for the upcoming big-screen duel.

There's also talk of the size comparison between the two monsters because Godzilla is obviously so much bigger than King Kong. One of the insiders says:

"There were funny comments about him having to be the size of the Empire State Building instead of hanging off of it."

It sounds like maybe King Kong will just be a much bigger ape this time around. They go on to say that Legendary Pictures will figure it out, and also hint that the two creatures could eventually team up:

"Legendary is confident it can come up with a rationale to explain how Kong and Godzilla can do battle - and possibly become allies."

Watching Kong and Godzilla fighting each other is going to be awesome, but the possibility of seeing them actually team up to fight another monster or robot is even better! They've never teamed up in a movie before, so seeing something like that would be incredibly fun.

The movie isn't supposed to be released until after Gareth Edward's Godzilla sequel, which comes out in 2018. I think it's safe to say that we won't see these monsters fight until at least 2019, so we've got a long way to go.

A Sitdown With Jeff McComsey On Z-MEN, RISE, and Lyndon Johnson

I recently had a chance to chat with writer Jeff McComsey, who is currently working on two of the initial ten books from Double Take, both set in the Night of the Living Dead universe. We discuss both books, Z-Men and Rise, at length, as well as what is in store for both series and the process of getting this thing off the ground. Hope you enjoy!

Matt: I really enjoyed both Rise & Z-Men. Now, both of these are part of the same universe. Were you a big fan of the original film? Or was it just a chance to play around in a well known playground?

Jeff: Oh no, I have definitely been a fan of the film for a long time. Black and white films right away have a special place in my heart, but Night Of The Living Dead, I was a huge fan, and it was a great opportunity to kind of expand on this universe alongside Bill Jemas and the other guys.

Matt: At the beginning, since the launch is initially 10 books, did you have free reign to pick what angles you wanted to take within the universe? Whether it be something more government related and procedural like Z-Men, or something a little different with Rise, was that your choice? Or was there a more firm plan in place?

Jeff: I was lucky in that I was kind of there from the beginning. When they decided what they wanted to do I was right there, so I pretty much got to pick what I wanted to work on. We knew that we wanted to, I wouldn’t call it the flagship book per se, but we wanted to do something with Johnny and Barbara from the original movie. My initial pitch was for two secret service agents, which eventually became Z-Men. A lot of it was just being there at the beginning and making my own decisions on what interested me, because I love historical fiction type stuff. It is kind of my bread and butter, so Z-Men was my natural choice, so we can follow these two guys but also see the bigger picture stuff from Washington D.C., which is always a lot of fun.

Matt: And that is something I really enjoyed, especially the focus on Lyndon Johnson. I loved that you included his infamous pants line, which to be quite honest I did not realize was real before John Oliver featured it on Last Week Tonight. Regardless, I appreciated it being in the book.

Jeff: Haha, if anything we had to tone down LBJ a little bit, because he was a mad man.

Matt: Are we going to see him featured as prominently as he was here throughout the rest of the series?

Jeff: Yeah, I mean one of the things that we are setting up here is the deterioration of the situation in Pennsylvania. In the film Night of the Living Dead, by the time it ends you get the impression that the situation is more or less under control. They figure out how to kill the zombies, they’re burning them up, etc, etc. What we wanted to do with our story is show how things quickly escalated after that, and the fun way to do that is to show the official response and how they completely cock everything up. The metaphor that we were working with, or from I should say, was the Vietnam War. So you have an obvious disconnect with what is going on in the field, and what people are actually seeing going on versus Washington and how they are going to deal with it. LBJ should be around for quite a while.

Matt: Good deal. He is quite a fascinating character. Now you get to work in the '60s here. Is there something you really enjoyed about writing in that time period? Something you didn’t like? How ingrained in the decade did you get?

Jeff: Well for me I like it because when you are writing modern stories, technology has an interesting way of kind of changing how information moves. For instance everybody has a cell phone, know what I mean? The fact that here the technology is kind of limited, for instance the Z-Men have to report in and tell their superiors what they see, playing this game of telephone, so it just creates a lot of opportunities for adventure or action, whatever you want to call it. I was watching a movie set in 1980s New York and the guy was making a telephone call in a phone booth and he gets shot. I realize that is a common trope, and I thought to myself how do they shoot people in movies anymore now that nobody goes into phone booths, know what I mean? It's just like not having to add that cell phone device, I mean the story would be over in a matter of an issue if you had the proper communication equipment, so it has been fun to write in the period.

Matt: There is something to that. I mean it feels like it gives the story more room to play with, since the answers are not immediately available and just a few Google searches away. A little legwork is required.

Jeff: Absolutely, and you also get a little whisper down the lane too, because they have to report to a guy who then reports to a guy who then tells the President, as opposed to nowadays where the information is patched directly in, and that is something that plays a part in the story later on.

Matt: Now Clancy and Stewart have a very, I guess best way to describe it would be a Men In Black Agent K and J type of vibe. What do you enjoy most about writing them?

Jeff: I like Clancy because he’s an asshole. He is a little older than Stewart, and he’s been around a long time. We haven’t gotten to it, but their backstory involves them goofing something up under President Kennedy in Dallas when he was assassinated, so they are kind of in the doghouse when we meet them. They have been buried in the motorcade, and Clancy has pretty much accepted his place, until he gets the opportunity from the director of the secret service, so this is a big deal for them and is their redemption moment, or at least it could be. I don’t get to write them enough, and they are a lot of fun.

Art by: Kurt Tiede, Frederica Manfredi, Vladimir Popov

Art by: Kurt Tiede, Frederica Manfredi, Vladimir Popov

Matt: Yeah they are, and poor Stewart. His sideburns really aren’t that long. I don’t know why everyone gives him so much grief about those, they are perfectly fine. It's not like he has full-on chops or anything.

Jeff: (Laughs)

Matt: Now your other book is very different in tone, and it was here where you were able to delve more into the film universe. What was your goal with this book?

Jeff: Really to merge these two worlds. The Night of the Living Dead film and these new books that Double Take wants to put out. and making sure we connected these so that fans who read the books would be right on page with where we were going, and also present it in a way that if you hadn’t, and were one of those two poor souls who hadn't seen the movie, you could still hop right on and be interested. I think that Johnny and Barbara are two — its funny because they are kind of the main characters, at least Barbara,  from the movie. Johnny really, he shows up in the first 5 minutes, is knocked unconscious, and you don’t see him again until the very end, so he spends much of the movie catatonic. It was kind of an opportunity, a blank slate to start with as far as their personalities, and of course they are brother and sister and like to give each other a hard time. A lot of that was fun to play with. Traditionally in comics when you have a male and a female lead there is a love interest there, but Johnny and Barbara are brother and sister, so there is a completely different dynamic there.

Matt: Something I noticed is that if you had never seen the film, and you just came into this book I could see someone questioning whether or not Johnny is actually dead or not. There is a certain uneasiness there, and the way he moves throughout combined with the unique art style help push the question even further. That constant question of is he or isn’t he kept me intrigued throughout. Now you got to work with two very talented and very different art teams here. Can you tell us a little bit about that?

Jeff: Definitely. Unfortunately I don’t get to be as involved with the art side of it. I see it when it comes in, except for the one case where pencil roughs are done in house. In fact I did pencil roughs for Rise #2, and then they get sent off to different people. When they come back, honestly as a small publisher myself outside of what I do with Double Take, it is a genuine pleasure to get back finished artwork. I wouldn’t say they are squiggles when they go out, but they are very unfleshed out, and then you get this great finished work from them. So the pencilers and the colorists, they just did a fantastic job. As for the artwork on Rise, it is just a great approach to, instead of like Z-Men, where it has traditional pen and ink, Rise has something more akin to colored pencils, and I’ve been very happy with it.

Matt: Agreed, Rise is a very unique book. Also have to give props on the cover to Apple Zhang. That art is gorgeous. Straight up frameable.

Jeff: Yeah, they found some really great people for the covers. I’ve been really blown away by them as they come in.

Matt: One of the other things that I enjoyed is actually in each book. Towards the back is a map of the entire area, and you can actually see where all the different series are based. It's a cool way to show the reader what other series they might be interested in and how they relate to each other. Are we going to see some of the books and characters crossover at all? Or are things staying self contained?

Jeff: Though some are self contained and more one offs, there will be some crossover. That map will actually be more expanded as the story goes on, which I agree that was a great idea. It helped the creative teams, too, because we are all in our own little stories. On the surface of course we all know they are connected, but those little things helped us bring it all together. In a way like Game of Thrones in that if you didn’t have that map you wouldn’t know where the hell all of this stuff was going on at. A lot of times the spacial relationships are very important to the story, so it has been a huge help.

Matt: It's just one more thing to invest people in the world. As for the two books, they are both very different, but which one are you enjoying the most? I’m sure they both let you do different things writing-wise, but is there a favorite?

Jeff: I can definitely find something enjoyable in each one, but if I had to pick my favorite it would be Z-Men, just because getting to put words into Lyndon Johnson’s mouth and you’ve got secret service guys, a certified nut job, and Robert McNamara who is also a controversial historical figure. It is just really satisfying because of all the research you’ve done and then you get to put words in their mouths. Just really fun.

Matt: Now this project was all Kickstarted, which is a very unique process in of itself. Has it all worked very traditionally for you in coming up with the idea, writing the first drafts, etc., or was the fact that the project was funded by a lot of people changed things in any way, whether it was taking their opinions into account, changes in scope, etc?

Jeff: I wouldn’t say the Kickstarter had a lot to do with the creative process. If anything it did lead to a lot of story meetings early on. Like I said I was lucky enough to be there at the beginning, so a lot of it was just going back and forth figuring out what stories we wanted to tell, as well as more importantly what is the long term goal here. There was a lot of work and a lot of trashed ideas that came out, just because we were trying to figure out what we wanted to do before we launched, so most of it was just story meetings. And that is cool because Bill is obviously very experienced with that type of thing, and helped us navigate what works and what doesn't.

Matt: Yeah, you see the credits on the book with a name like his and it does automatically instill some confidence that the team knows what it's doing.

Jeff: Absolutely.

Matt: So how will the distribution work on future issues? Will it be another Kickstarter for the next set of issues?

Jeff: I believe what they are going to do, and I could be wrong here, but I’m pretty sure that they are going to put out three issues of each, and then there is going to be a hiatus and then they will come out with the next three. There is kind of a big event that happens at the end of all the third issues, and that does crossover. Then it would be another big launch for those just like it was here, with the ten issue packs, so I believe issue two goes to the printer very, very soon, and then issue three shortly after that, so you are basically getting three issues of each, and then we will come back with the next three a little later in the fall.

Matt: Well, I’m excited to see what that big event is now. Thanks for taking the time to talk to me, really appreciate it.

Jeff: No problem, thanks a lot man.

Z-Men and Rise are both available now.

First Teaser and Release Date For W/ BOB & DAVID Starring Bob Odenkirk and David Cross

If you ask today's comedians what their influences are, chances are pretty good most of them will mention Mr. Show With Bob and David, Bob Odenkirk (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul) and David Cross' (Arrested Development) HBO sketch show that was never really a huge hit, but became a cult sensation for comedy lovers. I still need to check it out because I haven't seen it for myself, but if you're a frequent listener of comedy podcasts, you've heard people talk about it ad nauseum.

Now the starring duo (and many of their supporting cast members) are reteaming for a new show on Netflix called W/ Bob & David, which seems to be a sort of sequel but with a different name (likely for legal reasons). Netflix has unveiled the release date (November 13th) as well as the first teaser trailer, which you can watch below. Beware, though, there's some language in it that's probably considered NSFW:

Bob Odenkirk and David Cross are back for more inspired and absurd sketch comedy in W/ BOB & DAVID, the new Netflix original series, premiering Friday, November 13. In the series, Bob and David reunite – along with Paul F. Tompkins, Jill Talley, Jay Johnston, John Ennis, Brian Posehn and more – in four all-new 30-minute episodes.

Supercut Connects Movie Phone Calls Into One Long Conversation

Burger Fiction has put together another supercut, and this one takes footage featuring tons of movie characters on the phone and stitches it together so it seems like they're talking to each other. It doesn't make any logical sense, but there's something cool about just letting go of logic and embracing the curiosity of what comes next. (The must-watch mashup Hell's Club gave me a similar feeling not long ago.) Check this out:

There are so many great phone scenes in movies, so we thought it would be fun to see how many we could string together. Here’s a list of all the movies (in order of appearance):

Duncan Jones Isn't Worried About Universal Reportedly Calling WARCRAFT A "Problem Movie"

THR is probably pulling in some big time traffic from its piece today about the inner workings of Universal, Legendary, and Warner Bros. It confirmed the fact that Pacific Rim 2 is delayed indefinitely, gave us intel on the connections between Kong: Skull Island and the Godzilla franchise, and also offhandedly mentioned how director Duncan Jones' upcoming film adaptation of Warcraft and the Matt Damon film The Great Wall are considered "problem movies" by Universal chief Donna Langley. (What exactly does that mean? The report is vague, so we're not entirely sure.)

But one person who isn't concerned about that description is Jones himself, who took to Twitter to respond to a fan:

Joey raved about the footage of Warcraft shown at this year's Comic-Con, and everything we've seen so far from character design to make-up tests has looked really good, so we'll see how it all plays out when the movie arrives in theaters on June 10th, 2016.

Director Rupert Wyatt Bails on Channing Tatum's GAMBIT Solo Film

Is Channing Tatum's Gambit movie cursed? It's beginning to look that way. Various high profile directors passed on it before Rise of the Planet of the Apes director Rupert Wyatt finally signed on a few months ago, and now Deadline reports that Wyatt is leaving the project. No further details are known at the moment, but this is another blow for the movie, which has Tatum set to produce and star as the Cajun mutant scoundrel and Lea Seydoux as the female lead, Bella Donna Boudreaux.

With so little information to go on, we're left wondering what the heck is wrong with this project that's causing so much behind-the-scenes trouble with bringing it to life. Is it simply bad luck, or could it be an awful script that has people nervous about being associated with the property? That's pure speculation on my part, but hopefully we'll hear more details soon.

First Reported Alien Abduction Story Becoming a Movie Called CAPTURED

The first reported alien abduction allegedly happened to Betty and Barney Hill on September 19th, 1961. They were an interracial couple from Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He was a postal clerk and she was a social worker. The couple claimed that they had been taken aboard a UFO and studied by aliens. They were then returned to their lives, and they couldn't remember what had happened until they went through some hypnosis therapy.

A movie about the events will be called Captured, and according to The Wrap it will be based on the 2007 non-fiction book called Captured! The Betty and Barney Hill UFO Experience: The True Story of the World’s First Documented Alien Abduction, which was written by nuclear physicist Stanton Friedman and Betty Hill’s niece, Kathleen Marden. According to the report:

That book contains new information and personal details about the case, and the movie will place the events in a context of both Cold War paranoia and the country’s struggle over race relations.

The movie is being produced by Gotham/Principal, who worked on the upcoming film Maze Runner: Scorch Trials. It will also be produced by Jackie Zabel and Bryce Zabel, who is a leading expert on UFOs. He is also writing the script for the movie. He worked on other projects such as Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, Atlantis: The Lost Empire and Lois and Clark. One of the other producers on the project, Eric Robinson, said:

“Captured is a true story that explores the birth of modern UFO lore through the eyes of the first Americans to report that they were kidnapped by aliens. This is an exciting story that is as intriguing, timely and ripe for adaptation today as it was 54 years ago when this incident occurred. We look forward to sharing Betty and Barney Hill’s incredible encounter with audiences all around the world.”

Bryce Zable added:

“Betty and Barney were two down-to-Earth people who found themselves in a situation that was literally out-of-this-world. Ironically, at the time of their abduction, while the country was focused on deeply divided racial issues, it seems like only the aliens never reacted to the color of their skin.”

Jackie Zabel also included the following statement:

“The Hills were very much a part of the times they lived in. They were an interracial couple in a country that still had segregation laws, and they lived in a city that was next door to a bomber base bristling with nuclear weapons. What they knew and why they were targeted will make for a phenomenal film.”

I've always been fascinated by this stuff, and I'm curious to see how this story will be portrayed on the big screen. Will it be presented as fact or fiction or a little bit of both? However they tell the story, this has potential to be a great flick!
