top-10-massive-plot-holes-in-popular-movies-video-breakdown

I love watching movies, and when there's a movie that I really enjoy, I tend to overlook certain aspects that some hardcore film critics tear apart. That includes plot holes. Yeah, plot holes stick out like a sore thumb to me, but sometimes I just have to let one slide because I don't want it to ruin my experience while watching a fun film. I'm not going to let it bug me and eat at me like some people do. If I do that, what's the fun in going to the movies!?

ScreenRant has released a video breakdown that points out the Top 10 major plot holes in films that we all love. The movies included on the list include The Avengers, The Wolverine, The Matrix, Minority Report, Interstellar, Star Wars: A New Hope, Batman Begins, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Guardians of the Galaxy and Back to the Future 2.

The bigger the action, and the higher the stakes, the more audiences tend to overlook the little details of movie plots and surprise twists. But even when a film has been enjoyed for decades, a closer look can reveal lingering questions and clumsy plots that fans would rather ignore. They don’t have to ruin a movie, and sometimes, coming up with a solution can be more fun than the filmmakers ever imagined. Here are Screen Rant’s 10 Massive Plot Holes in Popular Movies.

Are there any movie plot holes in movies that they didn't mention in the video that bug the hell out of you?

Debut Trailer For Vanillaware's 13 SENTINEL AEGIS RIM

We now have an official first look at Vanillaware's new IP, titled 13 Sentinel Aegis Rim. As always with Vanillaware, the game sports a stunning graphic style, mixing the urban dust and realism of the city with a watercolor glaze. There isn't much to go on other than the trailer and the image above at the moment, but from what is there it seems the three women are each tied to their own mech of some sort. Not sure whether they can call those into battle or are fighting against them, but I'm eager to see some actual combat.

Thing is, I'm also crossing my fingers that this doesn't go the way of the team's last project, Dragon's Crown, which also had a beautiful art style, but was marred by questionable character design choices like the ridiculousness below. Here's hoping.

The game has no release date, but will be released for PS4 and PS VITA.

Beautiful Short by Disney Animator Glen Keane - NEPHTALI

I've got a beautiful traditionally animated short film that you have to watch called "Nephtali." It was animated by veteran Disney animator Glen Keane. He previously created a wonderful short film called Duet that you can watch here. I also recently posted a short film in which he demonstrates creating art in virtual reality, which was absolutely amazing. You can watch that here. As far as this latest film goes, the artist "uses both film and drawing in order to depict the journey of a ballerina that is drawn towards a higher power."

As cool as the stuff that Pixar and Disney are doing with 3D animation these days, "Nephtali" is a true piece of animated art that illustrates the style of animation that I fell in love with in the first place.

Stephen King’s THE MIST Being Developed as a TV Series

I just happened to watch Frank Darabont’s 2007 adaptation of Stephen King’s The Mist a few days ago. Damn, that was a good movie. I’ve been a fan of this story since the audio dramatization was released in 3D sound back in the '80s. I used to listen to that thing all the time!

King’s classic horror tale is getting yet another adaptation. This time, it’s being brought to TV by The Weinstein Company’s Dimension Television. The production company got King’s blessing to do it, and they’ve hired Christian Torpe to write it. He created a Danish series called Rita, which is finishing out its fourth season.

According to Deadline, the series will tell “an original story about a seemingly innocuous mist that seeps into a small town but contains limitless havoc. From psychological terrors to otherworldly creatures, the mist causes the town residents’ darkest demons to appear forcing them to battle the supernatural event and, more importantly, each other.”

Bob Weinstein, co-chairman of The Weinstein Company and Dimension Films, said in a statement:

“The terror and drama in Stephen King’s novella are so vast that we felt serialized television is the best place to explore them in greater depth. With this show, Christian has created a fascinating band of characters and a story with infinite scares.”

I think TV is a great place for this story to be developed. There’s so much they can do with this horrific situation that King imagined up all those years ago. I’m perfectly all right with the fact that it’s not going to be a direct adaptation of the book. I’ve already had my fill of that story with the book, audio drama, and movie. I’m ready for something different. As long as it’s good quality storytelling, I’ll be happy.

Johnny Depp Talks About Wes Craven Giving Him His Start as an Actor

Johnny Depp has had a hell of an acting career, and it all started with a small role in Wes Craven's A Nightmare on Elm Street that turned out to literally be one of the most bloody deaths ever put on film. During a Q&A session promoting his film Black Mass earlier this week, the actor was asked about the late director casting him in the 1984 horror film. Depp paid tribute to Craven and talked out how he gave him his start in movies:

“Wes Craven was the guy who gave me my start, from my perspective, for almost no reason in particular. I read scenes with his daughter when I auditioned for the part. At the time, I was a musician. I wasn’t really acting. It was not anything very near to my brain or my heart, which is pretty much how it remains to this day.
“But Wes Craven was brave enough to give me the gig based on his daughter’s opinion. I guess she had read with a bunch of actors, and after the casting sessions, she said, ‘No, that’s the guy.’ I always think of her for putting me in this mess, and certainly Wes Craven for being very brave to give me this gig. But he was a good man — so rest in peace, old Wes.”

It's pretty crazy how that all worked out for Depp and how a little role like this launched his career that eventually rocketed into the stratosphere. Especially when it wasn't really something that he was looking at doing. The guy wasn't an aspiring actor, he just was at the right place at the right time, with the right people. Everyone's got to start somewhere.

Ice Cube to Star in a New Version of A CHRISTMAS CAROL Called HUMBUG

ice-cube-to-star-in-a-new-version-of-a-christmas-carol-called-humbug

Ice Cube is set to star in a film called Humbug, which is another reimagining of Charles Dickens’ classic tale A Christmas Carol. The spec script for the film was written by Todd R Jones and Earl Richey Jones, and apparently there was a big bidding war for the project between Universal Pictures, Disney, New Line and MGM. Universal ended up winning it.

In this new, modern-day retelling of the story, Cube will play "a wealthy real estate mogul shown a path to redemption by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future." It's really not that hard to imagine Cube playing a grumpy dude on Christmas.

This is a story that we've seen countless times. I've enjoyed most of the movies that have been made that are based on A Christmas Carol, but one of my favorites is Bill Murray's Scrooged. It's hard to imagine that that Humbug will be better than that. But it's got to have some potential, especially since there were four studios fighting to get their hands on it.

Tim Story is directing the film, and he's previously worked with Ice Cube on films such as Barbershop, Ride Along, and the upcoming Ride Along 2.

G.I. Joe Action Figure Creator Fighting to Get the Rights Back from Hasbro

$

Stanley Weston GIJOE

In 1964, Stanley Weston came up with the idea for a line of 12” action figures for kids that became known as G.I. Joe. It was his idea to manufacture and sell “male action figures wearing and carrying miniaturized versions of the uniforms, insignias, emblems and equipment of each of the different branches of the United States armed forces." Those included the Action Soldier (U.S. Army), Action Sailor (U.S. Navy), Action Pilot (USAF), and the Action Marine (USMC).

Weston, who is now 82, has hired entertainment attorney Bert Fields to represent him in trying to get the rights back to G.I. Joe. Over the years, G.I. Joe has been through several different toy phases, animated series, and a franchise of crappy live-action movies. I grew up on the '80s version of the action figures and cartoon series, which I still love. Then in the '90s they re-introduced the 12” figures that were also awesome.

I’m not sure what Weston will do with G.I. Joe if he gets the rights back, but as long as it stops Paramount Pictures from making G.I. Joe 3, that’s all that matters. Maybe he’ll give the rights to a filmmaker that will actually know what to do with the franchise, which is valued at $100 million.

As far as the lawsuit goes, THR explains what is going on:

Weston has served a notice of termination to Hasbro, which acquired rights to "G.I. Joe" some years back through a predecessor company. He's seeking to exploit a mid-1970s change in copyright law that allows authors or their heirs to grab back rights after 35 years from assignees. These termination rights have come up often in the music industry; Here, it would termination copyrights associated with a toy and derivative works.
This lawsuit does have some precedent.
In 2013, the creator of "He-Man" and the Masters of the Universe characters took on Mattel in a similar lawsuit with the prospect of termination looming. Mattel eventually won the case after a judge found the plaintiff's creations were a work-made-for-hire. As such, the company was deemed to be the statutory author and the creator had no termination rights.
One can imagine the "G.I. Joe" lawsuit moving in the same direction as the complaint notes that Hasbro has denied Weston has any such termination right. An even stronger hint is the care taken to describe the genesis of "G.I. Joe." Who "commissioned" the work? Did it come at the Hasbro predecessor's "instance and expense" or Weston's? Did the company or Weston induce the creation and have the right to "direct and supervise"? These are some of the questions that might determine whether a California federal judge agrees to find the termination notice valid.

Weston pitched his military action figure idea to Hasbro’s Donald Levine, who was VP of research and development, He obviously liked the idea and the rest is history. According to the complaint:

"Weston had no facilities to create prototypes of his Outfitted Action Figures, but defendant did; and, when asked by Weston, defendant was willing to undertake that. Weston authorized and directed defendant to make initial drawings of his Outfitted Action Figures and then, if the initial drawings were approved, to fabricate prototypes of his Outfitted Action Figures wearing and carrying their miniaturized uniforms, insignias, emblems and equipment, as he had described them and had shown in his oaktag presentation.
"Levine told Weston that, if Weston approved what defendant made, he was sure defendant would want to buy the rights from Weston. Weston offered to pay any expense incurred by defendant in fabricating the prototypes, but Levine said defendant could recoup any such expense in setting the purchase price of the rights. Weston agreed, however, that, if Weston did not sell defendant the rights, Weston would reimburse defendant for any expense it incurred in making the prototype action figures. Thus, Weston assumed the entire burden of any such expense."

Weston seems to have had a heavy hand in the creation process of the military action figures, so he believes that he is the lawful author of G.I. Joe. It's hard to think that Weston will win the fight in this, as he’s going up against the giant toy company Hasbro. But, if Weston does win, he would get the rights back from Hasbro in 2020. I'm curious to know what he wants to do with the rights if he does get them back.

You can read the full complaint here.

As you know, Square Enix has released a seriously badass line of Star Wars action figures for Darth Vader, Boba Fett, and the Stormtroopers. Artist Iain Reed created a series of portraits that are based on these designs. These action figure designs are pretty spectacular, and it's awesome to see that they are inspiring fan art like this.

"We will know soon enough if you are really are a Da Vinci, or you just think you are."

Danny Boyle and Aaron Sorkin's Steve Jobs looks so freakin' good. The movie recently screened at TIFF, and it was met with very positive reviews. It currently holds a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Here are some brief excerpts from the reviews that have been written:

"Racing in high gear from start to finish, Danny Boyle's electric direction temperamentally complements Sorkin's highly theatrical three-act study, which might one day be fascinating to experience in a staged setting." - THR

"An enthralling performance by Michael Fassbender fuels this brilliant, infuriating and richly unconventional take on the life of an American visionary." - Variety

"Screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, who's written about America's Great Flawed Men with such fire and hyperarticulate pathos that he's threatened to become one himself, outdoes his work on The Social Network with an even sharper and more savage script." - Time Out

"Steve Jobs is a buzzingly entertaining movie about an obdurate radical with a broken operating system who still managed to transform the world around us, how we communicate, and the course of technological history." - The Playlist

This seems like it has turned out to be one of the must-watch movies of 2015. It opens up in theaters on October 9th in New York and Los Angeles. On October 23rd, it will get a wide release.

Set backstage at three iconic product launches and ending in 1998 with the unveiling of the iMac, Steve Jobs takes us behind the scenes of the digital revolution to paint an intimate portrait of the brilliant man at its epicenter.

Natalie Portman's Troubled Western JANE GOT A GUN Getting 2016 Release

$

0

Jane Got A Gun, the new western starring Natalie Portman, has experienced setbacks before it even began filming. Original director Lynne Ramsay never showed up to work on the first day of shooting, so the production had to shut down until Warrior director Gavin O'Connor came in to take over. After some cast ended up leaving the production, they finally got underway with Portman, Joel Edgerton, Ewan McGregor, and Noah Emmerich in place. Things seemed to be fine after that, and a release date of September 4th was set, but then Relativity Media, the film's distributor, went bankrupt, leaving the movie's future in question.

Variety is reporting that The Weinstein Company ended up securing the rights to the movie just before Relativity's bankruptcy, and they'll release the film in the United States in February of 2016, a few months after it makes its European debut this November. There's no specific date set yet, but it's good news that someone sees some value in the movie even after all of that behind-the-scenes trouble. Let's hope it's worth the wait.

Millennium Falcon Mounted 3D Light Looks Like It's Tearing Through Your Wall

If waiting until Star Wars: The Force Awakens debuts in December is causing you physical pain, or if you bawled like a baby when seeing Han and Chewie in the teaser, this is probably something you're interested in. NerdApproved points us to 3DLightFX's mounted light that looks like the Millennium Falcon is ripping its way straight through your wall. It's battery powered, so there won't be any ugly cords you have to hide; this can just be there right on your wall by itself, maybe surrounded by some cool Star Wars art or something. I don't know, I'm not an interior decorator. If you'd rather have something outside instead of inside, these porch lights might be more appropriate. The 3D light should be available soon, so check the official site for more details.

Kevin Smith Plans to Kill Silent Bob in JAWS-Inspired Film Called MOOSE JAWS

$

Kevin Smith has another Canadian-set film project that he's developing called Moose Jaws. This will be the third film in his Canadian trilogy that also includes Tusk and Yoga Hosers. The writer and director talked about the new project in an interview with the Australian News Outlet news.com.au, and he explains that the movie is “like Jaws, only with a moose.”

I'm already sold. Smith goes on to reveal that he will reprise his role as Silent Bob in the film alongside Jason Mewes as Jay. As it turns out this is going to be the film in which he kills off Silent Bob. Since the director is openly talking about this plot point in interviews, I'm not treating it like a spoiler. If he didn't want people to know what he planned on doing, he wouldn't talk about it.

This is his explanation of the idea and how it goes down:

“I just finished writing the scene where Silent Bob gets eaten by the moose. That’s how he f---ing goes out!
"Isn’t that fun? I was talking to Jay [Mewes] about Moose Jaws and I’m like, ‘I’m thinking about bringing us in as the Captain Quint character’. And he goes, ‘Yeah, but Quint gets killed!’ I was like, ‘One of us has to get eaten’. And he was like, ‘You. Not me’. I was like, ‘Why?’ And he was like, ‘Because I wanna be in other movies!’ Fair enough, dude. So, rather than let him go out with dignity, he’ll be eaten by a fucking moose."

Well, I would have never in a million years imagined that Smith would kill off Silent Bob by being eaten by a freakin' moose! So that's going to be interesting to see. What do you think about the way Smith will kill off Silent Bob?

Smith has planned to make Clerks 3, Mallrats 2, and now he's got Moose Jaws in the pipeline. The guy is definitely keeping himself busy. I imagine this new film will shoot after Mallrats 2 and Clerks 3 because Silent Bob has to be a part of those movies.

Review: EVEREST is Worth The Climb, But Still Comes Up a Little Short

$
0
0

Snowflakes whip horizontally so fast you can hardly see them, and over a crevasse on the world's tallest mountain, a climber grips for his life, dangling above disappearing blackness. This is Everest, the newest film from Baltasar Kormakur (Contraband, 2 Guns), and while the director excels at creating suspenseful set-pieces, the script sometimes fails its human characters in favor of putting the spotlight on the mountain itself. Framing the peak in all its grandeur (and perilousness) is to be expected — it's freaking Everest, after all — but I wish that didn't mean doing its human co-stars such a comparative disservice. There are some heart-pounding moments on display here, and overall it's a mostly enjoyable ride, but the movie doesn't quite ascend to the pantheon of great disaster films to which it seems to aspire.

Jason Clarke plays Rob Hall, a veteran climber who attempts to lead a group of paying amateurs to the summit. Some of these include the Texas windbag Beck Weathers (Josh Brolin), a repeat customer who didn't quite make it to the top last time (John Hawkes), journalist Jon Krakauer (Michael Kelly), and Hall's rival Scott Fischer (Jake Gyllenhaal), who's leading his own team to the top at the same time. The movie doesn't give us much more information about those characters than the descriptions I just provided, and its biggest weakness is that even with a two hour run time, it doesn't take the time to make them feel like real, fleshed out people. (And they certainly were, considering the movie is based on a true story.) Emily Watson, Sam Worthington, and a few others stay behind at basecamp while the team makes the ascent, and tragedy strikes when a massive blizzard blows in, cutting some members off from the group and leading others to their doom in the icy cold.

Rob's wife has a baby on the way, and Keira Knightley makes the most out of her few scenes, with her fraught phone conversations with Clarke serving as some of the film's most effective emotional sequences. Similarly, Robin Wright has about five minutes of screen time as Beck's wife, her chilly demeanor when he misses their anniversary giving way to grim determination to bring her husband home after she hears about the storm.

Kormakur and cinematographer Salvatore Totino regularly capture astonishing shots of people in the foreground with an entire mountain range looming in the background, and when things go south, they frame close-ups with faces practically standing in for mountains themselves, often taking up the full IMAX image. While I wouldn't describe the 3D as necessary (it almost never is), it is surprisingly effective a number of times here, especially on the few occasions in which Kormakur swings his camera overhead to look down on the climbers, a death drop only steps away as the mountainside plunges off into the snowy abyss. "He might as well be on the moon," Knightley says at one point, and one of the film's biggest strengths is the depiction of Mother Nature as a dispassionate, brutal force with no regard for the lives, families, or dreams of the puny humans tempting their fates in conditions no one should ever be bold enough to think they could endure.

Everest is a solid throwback actioner, and it's not without its fair share of heart-wrenching drama, but there's a much better film buried in here somewhere, one that actually takes the time to fill out each of its supporting characters instead of leaving most of them out in the cold.

Fun New Trailer For Vin Diesel's THE LAST WITCH HUNTER - "Awakening"

fun-new-trailer-vin-diesels-the-last-witch-hunter-awakening

Thanks to IGN, we have a new trailer for Vin Diesel's upcoming supernatural action-thriller called The Last Witch Hunter. The trailer is called "Awakening," and features some new footage along with a cover of the classic Rolling Stones song “Paint It Black,” which was performed by Ciara. I've also included a collection of character posters below the trailer.

This movie looks like it will be a lot of fun. I'm not expecting it to be amazingly mind-blowing, but it will provide some enjoyable entertainment. When you go and see a Vin Diesel movie, you pretty much know exactly what you're going to get, and he always delivers something cool for his fans.

The modern world holds many secrets, but the most astounding secret of all is that witches still live amongst us; vicious supernatural creatures intent on unleashing the Black Death upon the world. Armies of witch hunters battled the unnatural enemy across the globe for centuries, including Kaulder, a valiant warrior who managed to slay the all-powerful Queen Witch, decimating her followers in the process. In the moments right before her death, the Queen curses Kaulder with her own immortality, forever separating him from his beloved wife and daughter in the afterlife.
Today Kaulder is the only one of his kind remaining, and has spent centuries hunting down rogue witches, all the while yearning for his long-lost loved ones. However, unbeknownst to Kaulder, the Queen Witch is resurrected and seeks revenge on her killer causing an epic battle that will determine the survival of the human race.

The Last Witch Hunter has a solid supporting cast that includes Elijah Wood, Rose Leslie, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Julie Engelbrecht, and Michael Caine. It's set to be released on October 23rd.

Watch: How THE PEANUTS MOVIE's Character Design Stays True to The Original Comic Strip

$

0

Like many of you, I grew up reading Charles Schulz's Peanuts comic strip, and I rolled my eyes when I heard the people who brought us Ice Age would be making a movie featuring those lovable characters. And while we still don't know anything about the quality of the film itself, this new featurette at least made me rethink my stance on the film. The filmmakers are very clearly trying to let fans know that they're attempting to make the movie resemble the comic as closely as possible, while still adding a new spin by transforming the characters into 3D objects on screen. I have to say: the animation looks like a perfect translation of Schulz's original work, so if the script is good, this could be a classic in the making. The Peanuts Movie opens on November 6th.

Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy, Linus and the rest of the beloved “Peanuts” gang make their big-screen debut, like they’ve never been seen before, in state of the art 3D animation. Snoopy, the world’s most lovable beagle – and flying ace – embarks upon his greatest mission as he takes to the skies to pursue his arch-nemesis The Red Baron, while his best pal, Charlie Brown, begins his own epic quest. From the imagination of Charles M. Schulz and the creators of the ICE AGE films, THE PEANUTS MOVIE will prove that every underdog has his day.

Newest POINT BREAK Trailer: This Movie Looks...Kind of Fun?

$

As a lover of Kathryn Bigelow's 1991 Point Break, I wasn't thrilled when they announced a remake was on the way. But — and I kind of hate to say this — I think this new trailer has changed my mind about the whole thing. The remake is so clearly ridiculous, incorporating global extreme sports into the equation under the guise of Bodhi's gang following spiritual teachings, that I now feel like it's edged back over the line into self-parody, and for me, that's much better than being uber-serious. I'm aware this could just be a nicely cut trailer that doesn't represent the final film, but if the movie has the tone of this trailer, I think I might actually end up really digging it. Let me know what you all think, and take a look at three more recently-released posters below.

Watch: Max Landis' Detailed Pitch For MAN OF STEEL 2

Screenwriter Max Landis (Chronicle, American Ultra) is one of the most outspoken Superman supporters on the internet. (He's probably one of the most outspoken people, period, but that's beside the point.) Landis has spoken a LOT about the character already (here and here), but because of his passion for the character, ScreenJunkies asked him to pitch a story for Man of Steel 2 if he was given the opportunity to do whatever he wanted.

Say what you want about the guy, but he can deliver one heck of a pitch. He's one of those people like Kevin Smith who I could listen to talk about characters like this for hours on end. He has such a deep understanding of these characters and where they come from, and you can really feel his love for them come through in his pitch. ScreenJunkies also did a great job editing together clips from other movies to give us an idea of what his film might look like. Take eleven minutes off and check this out:

Bryan Singer Set to Direct 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA

$

Bryan Singer announced via Instagram that his next film project after X-Men: Apocalypse will be a new big screen adaptation of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. He posted a photo of the script he has been working on and offered the following statement:

"It's my 50th birthday (ouch), and I just put the finishing touches on the script for my next film. A story I've wanted to retell since childhood. I promise this will be an epic and emotional adventure for all ages! An adventure very dear to my heart. Not abandoning the #xmenuniverse. Very excited about #xmenapocalypse and beyond. #julesverne#20000leaguesunderthesea #nemo"

The 1868 Jules Verne story followed the undersea adventures of Captain Nemo and the crew on his submarine vessel, the Nautilus. The most popular big screen adaptation was Disney's 1954 film with Kirk Douglas. Disney tried to get another adaptation off the ground a few years ago, and David Fincher was attached to direct it.

As much as I've enjoyed some of the films Singer has made, I would have much rather seen a version of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea made by David Fincher. He's just an all-around better filmmaker and storyteller. It's a shame that we'll never see what he had planned, but I'm sure Singer can make a decent film.

There's no word if Singer's film project is set up at Disney or not, but I imagine it's not. Singer's production company is set up over at 20th Century Fox, where I'm sure he'll stay to make his movie. Back in 2010, Ridley and Tony Scott were developing a version of the film at the studio, but nothing ever came of it.

Singer enlisted the help of screenwriters Rick Sordelet and Dan Studney to help write the script, which is unsettling because these are the same guys who also wrote Jack the Giant Slayer for Singer, which turned out to be a terrible film. Hopefully they deliver a solidly written script for 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

What do you think about Singer taking on this classic story?

It's my 50th birthday (ouch), and I just put the finishing touches on the script for my next film. A story I've wanted to retell since childhood. I promise this will be an epic and emotional adventure for all ages! An adventure very dear to my heart.  Not abandoning the #xmen universe. Very excited about #xmenapocalypse and beyond. #julesverne #20000leaguesunderthesea #nemo
