The Women of MAD MAX: FURY ROAD Get An Unbreakable Theme Song Mashup

0
0

I just finished watching all of the first season of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and if you've done the same thing, then you know what I'm about to say: that catchy theme song is stuck in my head. Editor Albert Lopez noticed some similarities between the Netflix series and Mad Max: Fury Road, specifically that they're both about strong female characters. Unbreakable Imperator Furiosa? I'd totally watch that. After all, females are strong as hell. Check out this mashup and let us know what you think.

Roger Deakins Will Shoot BLADE RUNNER 2

0
0

When you hear the words "Blade Runner," you probably picture dark wet streets, bright neon advertisements, flying cars, Japanese-infused culture, and long trenchcoats. It's one of the most influential movies ever made, and it drastically altered the future of science fiction when it was released in 1982. More than anything else in regards to that film, people remember the visuals. That's a lot of pressure for the person tasked with filming the sequel, but if there's one man alive who may be able to live up to it, that would be Roger Deakins. Thankfully, The Playlist reports he's the man who's been chosen to shoot the still-untitled Blade Runner 2.

Deakins is one of the best cinematographers of all time, responsible for films like The Shawshank Redemption, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, The Village, No Country For Old Men, The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford, and Skyfall. He's been nominated for an Oscar twelve times, but hasn't won yet. This could be his chance.

Denis Villeneuve (Enemy) is directing Blade Runner 2, which is set to star Harrison Ford and possibly Ryan Gosling. Deakins shot Villeneuve's previous two films, Sicario (the awesome-sounding thriller starring Emily Blunt that's currently playing at Cannes) and Prisoners, so the two clearly have a solid working relationship already. I can't wait to see what they come up with for a Blade Runner sequel.

Mike Maihack's fantastic artwork can be seen on a regular basis in the pages of Cleopatra, but every so often he decides to sketch out something else, including some of the best characters from DC and Marvel Comics. On Monday, he released his take on the new CBS Supergirl, and captured the essence of what the show appears to be beautifully. Do yourself a favor and browse his other work here, and make sure to check out Cleopatra in Space as well.

Paramount Wants STAR TREK 3 To Be Less "Star Trek-y"

0
0

Simon Pegg made a lot of headlines earlier this week with his state of the union speech about geek culture, but buried beneath all of that is a small update on Paramount's new Star Trek film that Pegg is starring in and co-writing, which may or may not be titled Star Trek Beyond(He said that was the title, but in the same piece he also said that Pierce Brosnan and Timothy Dalton are playing Stormtroopers in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, so he may not have been entirely serious. As far as I know, the studio has yet to officially confirm the title.)

Speaking with The Radio Times (via The Guardian), Pegg mentioned that the studio brought him on as a writer because they weren't pleased with the previous draft:

"They had a script for Star Trek that wasn't really working for them. I think the studio was worried that it might have been a little too Star Trek-y."

In all likelihood, that was Roberto Orci's script that he was initially going to direct before they brought in Fast Five helmer Justin Lin to replace him in the director's chair. Pegg continued:

"Avengers Assemble, which is a pretty nerdy, comic-book, supposedly niche thing, made $1.5 billion dollars. Star Trek: Into Darkness made half a billion, which is still brilliant. But it means that, according to the studio, there's still $1 billion worth of box office that don't go and see Star Trek. And they want to know why.
People don't see it being a fun, brightly coloured, Saturday night entertainment like the Avengers. [So they want to] make a western or a thriller or a heist movie, then populate that with Star Trek characters so it's more inclusive to an audience that might be a little bit reticent."

It stands to reason that Paramount would want to cash in these films as much as they possibly can, and with an apathetic-to-negative general consensus about Star Trek Into Darkness, it makes sense that they'd be looking to make the movie more accessible. As others have pointed out, this might not be as bad as it sounds; the original Star Trek TV series was very much a mish-mash of genres that included a number of extremely high-concept episodes placing the crew in a variety of ridiculous situations. Gene Roddenberry's original pitch for the show was a space western, so while it may seem like there's cause for alarm on the surface, in actuality I think the studio may be onto something here.

As long as they can keep the fun, adventurous spirit alive, I'm all for seeing Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, and the rest of the cast move in and out of whatever genres Pegg can come up with. What do you think?

Action Figure Variant

If you’ve been reading Secret Wars, you know that the Gods of Thunder are the enforcers that keep things in order. Now that Battleworld has taken over, Thunder Gods from every universe have answered the call to keep things in check, including Throg the Frog of Thunder, Beta Ray Thor, Thunder Bringer Brock Lesnar (okay, made that one up), and tons more. The Thor Corp as I call them were actually a pleasant surprise in Secret Wars 2, and seeing all the different versions on a team together trying to solve a murder case could be a lot of fun, especially in the capable hands of Jason Aaron.

Explosive Trailer For Jackie Chan's POLICE STORY: LOCKDOWN

explosive-trailer-for-jackie-chans-police-story-lockdown

Jackie Chan proves that he can still kick some major ass in this latest trailer for his upcoming new action thriller Police Story: Lockdown. This is a new chapter in the Police Story franchise, and the story follows a cop played by Chan, who is "caught in the crossfire of a high-stakes hostage plot involving his daughter, forcing him to choose between justice and revenge." The movie look freakin' awesome, and I can't wait to see it!

The movie was written and directed by Sheng Ding (Underdog Knight, Little Big Soldier), and it's technically the seventh film in the Police Story franchise. Chan started the franchise back in 1985 when he starred in and directed the first film. The movie already premiered in China in late 2013, and now it's finally getting a U.S. release! Well Go USA will release Police Story: Lockdown in theaters and VOD on June 5th.

KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE Kill Count Video

Matthew Vaughn's Kingsman: The Secret Service remains one of the most purely entertaining films I've seen in 2015, and I've been actively looking forward to rewatching it when it hits Blu-ray on June 9th. Until then, though, you can rewatch all of the action sequences by checking out this kill count video from YouTuber Glenn O'Neill (aka Coponfilms), which breaks down each kill in the film by character. That church sequence with Colin Firth is still totally bonkers, and I had forgotten the one character who was technically responsible for most of the carnage at the end, so that person has a much higher count than I would have guessed before watching this. Check it out to see who I mean, but keep in mind, there are MAJOR spoilers ahead:

Peter Sarsgaard Playing THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN Villain, Jason Momoa Reportedly Out

0
0

The Magnificent Seven remake just gained a villain, but lost a badass. Variety reports that Peter Sarsgaard has signed on to play the main bad guy in the western, while Deadline says that Jason Momoa has dropped out of a small role as one of the villain's henchmen.

The film, which stars Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, and Vincent D'Onofrio, is a remake of the classic 1960 film, which itself was a riff on Akira Kurosowa's The Seven Samurai. It follows a group of disparate mercenaries who are hired to protect a small town from a vicious robber baron. Sarsgaard has played bad guys before in films like Lovelace and Green Lantern, so we'll see if he can be menacing in the saddle this time around. And it's a true shame to see Momoa bail from this project, but if the report is true that he left because he felt like his character didn't have enough to do, it's hard to blame him for walking. I'd rather see him try to escape the shadow of his Game of Thrones performance by appearing in something he's passionate about, like he's doing on his Sundance Channel series The Red Road.

Haley Bennett, Byung-hun Lee, Luke Grimes, and Matt Bomer are also a part of the cast, and Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, The Equalizer) is directing. The Magnificent Seven will ride into theaters in January of 2017.

Grounded Superhero Short Follows People Struggling to Control Their Powers

grounded-superhero-short-follows-people-struggling-to-control-their-powers

Roar is an intriguing short film that offers viewers a very grounded take on superhero genre. The filmmakers approach it from a different, unique angle. It's a supernatural drama that is about people with super powers. The thing is, they spend their entire lives struggling to control them. The short was written and directed by Stuart Langfield and Dylan Rekert, and here's the synopsis:

"ROAR is a supernatural drama about generational bonds and disconnects. It is a grounded take on the superhero genre, told through real themes and experiences. It explores the commitments of a family divided by age and pride, who are brought together to fulfill a promise made many years ago. Roar is a film about people with extraordinary powers. Powers they spend their lives battling to control and which ultimately consume them."

I really liked the atmosphere of film, and the compelling story it told. It may not have any action in it, but it's a well-made film that's worth watching. Take the time to check it out when you get a chance.

New Trailer For The Sensational Film ME AND EARL AND THE DYING GIRL

new-trailer-for-the-sensational-film-me-earl-and-the-dying-girl

We have a new trailer for you to watch for one of the best movies you'll see this year. It's called Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, and it was one of my favorite films at Sundance this year. This is a fantastic trailer, but it doesn't do the movie justice. It barely hints at how incredible this film actually is. If you haven't already, check out my review here.

The movie was directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, and it stars Thomas Mann, Olivia Cooke, Ronald Cyler II, Jon Bernthal, Connie Britton, Molly Shannon, and Nick Offerman. I also included a couple of clips from the film as well. Here’s the synopsis:

Winner of the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, ME AND EARL AND THE DYING GIRL is the uniquely funny, moving story of Greg (Mann), a high school senior who is trying to blend in anonymously, avoiding deeper relationships as a survival strategy for navigating the social minefield that is teenage life. He even describes his constant companion Earl (Cyler), with whom he makes short film parodies of classic movies, as more of a ‘co-worker’ than a best friend. But when Greg’s mom (Connie Britton) insists he spend time with Rachel (Cooke) – a girl in his class who has just been diagnosed with cancer – he slowly discovers how worthwhile the true bonds of friendship can be.

You seriously have to watch this movie when it's released on June 12th. It really is an incredible movie, and I promise you won't be sorry.

Superman Takes Flight in GRAND THEFT AUTO V Mod

Grand Theft Auto V on the PC is proving to be a treasure trove of greatness when it comes to entertaining mods. We've seen a remakes of the Skyfall train sequence, the truck chase from Terminator 2, Star Wars: The Force Awakens' trailer, the Paul Walker tribute in Furious 7, and Breaking Bad thus far, and it doesn't look like these creative gamers are going to give up any time soon. This latest mod asks the question: what if The Man of Steel could soar above the skies of Los Santos?

While it's not perfect — there's no cape, for one thing — the idea of seeing a super-powered Kryptonian wandering around Los Santos destroying police vehicles and then flying away adds a whole different level of insanity to the world of GTA. Check out the video below:

WALKING DEAD’s Robert Kirkman and Others to Write TRANSFORMERS Spinoffs and Sequels

0

Paramount Pictures and the producing talent behind the Transformers franchise, which includes Michael Bay, Steven Spielberg, and Lorenzo di Bonaventura, have brought in screenwriter Akiva Goldsman to help develop ideas for more sequels and spinoff films based on the giant robot moneymaking franchise. This team has now finalized the group of writers who will be developing these films.

The writers they hired to help bring these additional Transformers projects to life are Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman; Iron Man writers Art Marcum and Matt Holloway; Pacific Rim 2‘s Zak Penn, and Amazing Spider-Man 2 scribe Jeff Pinkner.

This is an interesting list of talent, especially with the addition of Kirkman, and it will be interesting to see what they end up producing. I’m personally tired of the Transformers franchise, and I could care less if we see any more films. But since Paramount is going to spend hundreds of millions of dollars making these movies that will gross billions, hopefully they use the opportunity to actually make some decent Transformers films. I’m not counting on it though. I’m sure we’ll just get the same mediocre drivel.

COMMUNITY Pays Homage to Elevator Scene from CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER

A couple of months ago an awesome trailer for Community was released that was a parody of Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron. The comedy series has now paid homage to another Marvel film with a recreation of the elevator fight scene from Captain America: The Winter Solider, only this time it's with paintball guns. At the center of it all is Dean Craig Pelton (Jim Rash).

As you may remember, the directors of The Winter Soldier, Joe and Anthony Russo, worked on Community before they got their big break at Marvel where they are now directing some of their biggest and most anticipated projects such as Captain America: Civil War and the Avengers: Infinity War films.

The clip below comes from the latest paintball episode, which you can currently watch in its entirety on Yahoo! Screen. It a really fun scene, so I hope you enjoy it.

A unique live-action trailer has been released for Batman: Arkham Knight. What makes this trailer so unique is the fact that it focuses on ordinary people who are put into situations where they are in a position to step up and be a hero... to be the Batman. It's an inspirational trailer that is sure to get gamers even more pumped up to play this game.

Batman: Arkham Knight is one of my most anticipated games of the year, and I can’t wait to actually get to play it. This looks like it's going to be the best of the Arkham game series. The trailer also includes a little bit of gameplay action.

Batman: Arkham Knight brings the award-winning “Arkham” trilogy from Rocksteady Studios to its epic conclusion. Developed exclusively for New-Gen platforms, Batman: Arkham Knight introduces Rocksteady’s uniquely designed version of the Batmobile. The highly anticipated addition of this legendary vehicle, combined with the acclaimed gameplay of the Arkham series, offers gamers the ultimate and complete Batman experience as they tear through the streets and soar across the skyline of the entirety of Gotham City. In this explosive finale, Batman faces the ultimate threat against the city that he is sworn to protect, as Scarecrow returns to unite the super criminals of Gotham and destroy the Batman forever.
The Batmobile is brought to life with a completely new and original design featuring a distinct visual appearance and a full range of on-board high-tech gadgetry. Designed to be fully drivable throughout the game world and capable of transformation from high speed pursuit mode to military grade battle mode, this legendary vehicle sits at the heart of the game’s design and allows players to tear through the streets at incredible speeds in pursuit of Gotham City’s most dangerous villains. This iconic vehicle also augments Batman’s abilities in every respect, from navigation and forensics to combat and puzzle solving creating a genuine and seamless sense of the union of man and machine.

If there's one good thing that came from the movie Fifty Shades of Grey, it's this hilariously disturbing Teletubby trailer mashup. The video is called "Fifty Shades of Tubby," and it was created by Ochre Jelly. Watching Christian Grey seduce a Teletubby creature might be one of the strangest things you've seen in a long time.

He was a billionaire with no friends and room full of sorrows. She was a mythical creature in search of a magical ball. But when red on the outside meets red on the inside, someone is in for a rude awakening...

Touching Trailer for BATKID BEGINS Proves the World Can Be a Good Place

touching-trailer-for-batkid-begins-proves-the-world-can-be-a-good-place

There are so many bad things happening in the world these days, but that doesn't mean that theew is no hope. A trailer has been released for the documentary Batkid Begins, and it proves that the world can actually be a good place.

Batkid Begins recounts the 2013 story of 5-year-old Miles Scott, who was diagnosed with cancer. The entire world was moved when the people of San Francisco transformed their city into the fictional Gotham City in order to support the wish of the young boy, who wanted to be Batman.

He was granted the wish to be a real life superhero by the Make-a-Wish Foundation. 25,000 people from the city and other parts of the world came together to bring Batkid's adventure to life, and the city was filled with villains and people for Batkid to save. All along the way, crowds of people were cheering Miles on.

This documentary tells that story, and depending on how emotional you are, you might want to grab yourself a box of tissues before you watch this. Batkid Begins will be released in theaters on June 26th. I also included an lengthy synopsis of the film below the trailer:

It’s November 15, 2013.Twenty-five thousand people descend on San Francisco. Online, two billion others join in. This massive crowd erupts with a collective display of public emotion rarely seen. With a Beatlemania-like intensity, people take to the streets and screens. They are all united to fulfill the wish of 5-year-old Miles Scott, who is recovering from Leukemia. It is his dream to become Batkid and save Gotham City. Untitled BatKid Documentary chronicles the making of the overnight international phenomenon that is BatKid.

The film reveals what happens when an event goes unintentionally viral. Will the San Francisco Make-A-Wish Foundation fulfill its mission to help Miles reclaim his childhood after battling disease for more than half his short life? Or will the event itself spiral out of control; consume the organization, scare Miles and shut down an entire city?

Audiences will come along as Patricia Wilson, executive director of the San Francisco Make-A-Wish chapter, and her team - in true superhero spirit - tackle the monster they created.

Before BatKid, the largest crowd Patricia had organized was 300. She posts an RSVP on her website. Immediately 7,000 sign up. Soon the number is growing at 1,000 people a day, overwhelming Patricia’s team. Will the young boy’s dream get lost in a nightmare?

This film shows what can happen when people come together in the spirit of “Yes! And….”

Everyone Patricia and company approach say “Yes!” And even take the request a step further.

Featring exclusive illuminating interviews with all the main players including executives at Twitter and Apple, the film reveals surprising truths about what happens when a nerve is touched in our digital society.

The film looks at the “why” of this phenomenon. Why did the intense outpouring of spontaneous support for a five-year-old reverberate around the world? In the end, the film leaves audiences to decide; did Miles need the world for inspiration? Or did the world need Miles?

Nintendo's World Championship Seems More Like Lazy Marketing Than The Tribute It Should Be

0
0

The first Nintendo World Championships took place in 1990 in a world that was all too hot for gaming. 29 cities were flooded with gamers of all ages looking to become the top competitor in their age group to represent their city in Universal Studios California and acquire the status of top Nintendo gamer.

Players played a six minute compilation of modified Super Mario Bros, Tetris, and Rad Racer. Each city had one winner in each age group (11 and under, 12-17, 18+) and each city's winner was rewarded $250 cash along with a free trip to Universal Studios California to compete in the finals. Although the runner ups were undoubtedly disappointed, they were awarded with a power pad and a Game Boy, which wasn't a bad deal considering a Game Boy was going for around $100 after tax at the time.

The winners competed in California, and when it was all said and done, one man from each age category was left standing. At this point, each of them already had 10k in cash, a gold Mario trophy, convertible Geo Metro, and 40 inch rear projection TV, but that wasn't enough. For personal bragging rights the three competitors battled for the ultimate title and 13 year old Thor Aackerlund would walk away the Nintendo champ. His title would be short lived, however, as he quickly signed a contract to become a spokesman for then competitor Camerica games...

Runner up Jeff Hansen would then go on to represent America as Japan invited their winner to take on their own champion Yuichi Suyama. Jeff would go on to beat the Japanese at their own game and once again showcase American dominance in the land of the rising sun.

If it needed to be said after reading all that: IT WAS A BIG F****** DEAL. So if you didn't know, now you know why Nintendo completely annihilated the news of the day when they announced the tourney's return a couple weeks back. That enthusiasm and love has quickly faded with the first details of the tournament being released yesterday.

The qualifying will last one day, and take place in a Best Buy in one of eight cities. Two of those cities are in California, and the rest are a poor attempt at covering the map and giving the most diehard fans a chance at competing. Hell, even the most convenient Midwest location is an hour outside of Chicago.

If you happen to make it to one of these locations, expect a long wait. Having attended Best Buy Nintendo events in the past I can attest to the fact that the consoles are few and the lines are unbearably long. I get it, they are a business after all, but why not put in some leg work and actually try to find venues to house a larger crowd? Oh yeah, because Best Buy probably threw them money to host it.

So what game will the attendees be playing if they manage to complete the long drive, wait in line, and make it to a console before close? Mario Kart right?! Smash Bros elimination? Maybe some Splatoon even?!

Ultimate NES Remix 3DS. Because what f****** year is it? Sure, it's in the spirit of the original competition to host a score based three game medley, but could we at the very least get a title reminiscent of the times?! God forbid we see any N64 or Gamecube games make an appearance, or damn, maybe an SNES title? All of these are playable with the Wii U, and would be a thousand times more engaging than a Dr. Mario time attack. Instead of putting some actual thought into it or maybe creating collectible software, however, Nintendo thought it best to piggy back off the game that already had a "Championship mode" and write it off.

With what little information that's been given about the Nintendo World Championships it's clear the new elite at Nintendo is taking a treasured moment in gaming history, and s******* on it for a cheap buck. I'm sure we are only days away from the "exclusive Amiibo announcement" that will be available for purchase to only those that attend, and it makes me sick to think about how many people will show up just to throw money at this half-assed tribute.

This isn't a tournament, it's free marketing. Nintendo once again went to the past to grab headlines and get media attention, then as usual followed through with disappointing results. It's the epitome of what Nintendo fans have had to go through for years. You stick with them because you remember the glory days, and there are times when you are surprised. More often than not however, it's not what you imagined and you end up compromising for a company whose heart seems to have checked out as the years continue. It breaks my heart, and all I can imagine right now is Reggie Fils-Aimé reading this article, chuckling to himself and making his oh so famous pose...

Potential Major Spoiler About ANT-MAN's Villain

0
0
the-real-villain-in-ant-man-not-might-be-who-you-expect-spoilers

A few months ago some new details for Marvel's Ant-Man was revealed thanks to a playset for the film coming from LEGO. Toy sets like this have proven to let some plot points of the Marvel films slip out, such as the twist in Iron Man 3 that involved Aldrich Killian. They also gave us a look at Vision in Avengers: Age of Ultron before his poster was revealed.

The LEGO playset for Ant-Man that was released is called "Finale Battle," and it presumably focuses on the final battle between Paul Rudd's Scott Lang and Corey Stoll's Yellowjacket. But there's another character here, and from this point on I'm going into possible SPOILER territory, so you've been warned.

There's another character in the playset that is wearing a darker, more menacing version of the Ant-Man suit, and we previously speculated that Michael Douglas' Hank Pym could be suiting up in this costume and that he would be fighting alongside Lang to help defeat Corey Stoll's villainous Yellowjacket.

Turns out his involvement might be the exact opposite scenario. There's a rumor going around that Hank Pym is actually the real villain in the movie. It wouldn't surprise me if this was true, especially after what Marvel did with S.H.I.E.L.D. and Hydra in Captain America: The Winter Solider

One of the things that adds validity to this rumor is that when it was first reported by Variety that Douglas was cast as Hank Pym in Ant-Man, they originally said that the character would be a villain. They ended up editing that after Marvel issued an official press release on the casting.

Maybe fans are reading too much into this, but Marvel does like to surprise its audience with twists we didn't see coming. There's no official confirmation of this. It's just a rumor at the moment, but there's always a chance that it could turn out to be true.

The movie opens up on July 17th. What do you think about this latest rumor about Ant-Man
