GeekTyrant VS: Avengers Quicksilver Vs. X-Men Quicksilver

Now that the GeekTyrant VS team has seen Avengers: Age of Ultron at least twice, we can finally debate over which film did a better job at portraying the superhero Quicksilver: X-Men: Days of Future Past, or Avengers: Age of Ultron. Both of the actors that portrayed the character, Evan Peters and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, were in the movie Kick-Ass, but who do you think kicks more ass as Quicksilver? Watch the video and tell us what you think in the comments below! To watch any of our previous GeekTyrant VS episodes, click here.

THE CROW Remake Adds Andrea Riseborough as The Villainous Top Dollar

A remake of The Crow has been in the works for the better part of a decade now, with people like Bradley Cooper, Luke Evans, and Mark Wahlberg all attached at various points. The latest we've heard is that Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire) will play the lead role for director Corin Hardy. And now it seems The Crow has found his villain: the mob boss Top Dollar, who was played by Michael Wincott in the 1994 movie, will reportedly be played by a woman this time around.

Deadline reports that Andrea Riseborough is in negotiations to play the baddie, who orders the death of Eric Draven (Huston) and his girlfriend (played by Jessica Brown Findlay) before Draven is resurrected and sets out on a quest for revenge. Riseborough is a fantastic actress, and you may know her from her small appearance in last year's Best Picture Oscar-winner Birdman. I thought she was the best part of Tom Cruise's Oblivion a few years ago, and her involvement definitely has me more intrigued with this film than I was previously.

Review: TOMORROWLAND Is An Awe-Inspiring Sci-Fi Adventure

review-tomorrowland-is-an-awe-inspiring-sci-fi-adventure

Disney’s Tomorrowland was one of my most anticipated films of the year, and I’m happy to say that it exceeded my expectations. Those expectations were set pretty high because of the talented individuals that brought the film to life, and the subject matter that it involved. I had a blast watching Tomorrowland, it was an incredibly fun sci-fi adventure film that anyone and everyone can enjoy. On top of that, it's an original story, which is something that Hollywood is lacking these days.

Before I get into the review, I want to say that the Disney marketing team did a hell of a job promoting this film. They managed to keep all of the best and most surprising elements of the story out of the trailers, clips, and TV spots. So even if you've watched everything that's been released up until this point, when you go to the movie, you’re going to be treated with plenty of fun surprises. To preserve that secrecy, this review is completely spoiler-free.

The film was directed by Brad Bird from a script written by Bird and Damon Lindelof. Bird is the man behind such films as The Iron Giant, The Incredibles, Ratatouille, and Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol. I enjoyed all of these films, and The Iron Giant is one of my favorites of all time. One of the things that I loved most about Tomorrowland was that the director brought in that same spirit and tone of The Iron Giant to the story and visuals. Only this time around, it was all told in live action.

Bird’s directing style is sensational in almost every way, but especially when it comes to the characters and action. There are a few incredibly fun action sequences in the movie that were awesomely shot and choreographed. A couple of them involve one of my favorite characters in the film, a young girl named Athena, who has barely been teased in the trailers. She’s played by Raffey Cassidy, and she’s quite a nimble kickass firecracker. I think audiences are going to love her.

I enjoyed all of the characters that the film introduced to us. George Clooney plays Frank Walker, a genius who used to live in Tomorrowland; Britt Robertson plays Casey, a young girl who is invited to Tomorrowland; Hugh Laurie takes on the role of Nix, the man that oversees Tomorrowland; Tim McGraw is Casey’s dad Eddie, an ex-NASA engineer; and then there’s Thomas Robinson playing a young Frank, an imaginative kid with ambitions to make the world a better place…with a jetpack. All of the actors in the movie did a tremendous job in the roles they played, and they all fit their characters perfectly.

The visuals used in the film to bring the world of Tomorrowland to life were nothing short of stunning. I loved the retro 1960s futuristic look of the world. All of those classic sci-fi pulp comics and magazines that we've seen over the years have been brought to life in a way we’ve never seen before, and it is glorious.

The film just seemed to carry this nostalgic feel throughout the whole thing. For me it was like seeing everything I grew up enjoying brought to life: from the type of films I watched as a kid, the toys I collected, the books and comics that I read, and of course all of those awesome memories of going to Disneyland. It was as if some of the best parts of my imagination came to life on the big screen, which was the main power behind this movie for me.

As much as I enjoyed the movie, there was one thing that bugged me. There were three different movies loaded into this one film. Bird did a solid job bringing it all together, but there were plot and story elements that I would have loved to see expanded on because there was some really fascinating stuff that they played with. I just wish they would have been able to play with it more. In all honesty this movie could have been a trilogy spanning the course of a century. So I guess what I’m saying is, I wish I could have seen more, which might be more of a compliment than an issue.

This is a must-watch movie for any Disney geek that who loved going to Tomorrowland or the Epcot Center at the theme parks and wished that they were real places that existed. It’s for anyone who is a big dreamer with a huge imagination. The film is also for those who are looking to be inspired. I’m excited to take my family to go see this movie because I know they’re going to love it. It’s an incredibly fun ride that I think many of you will have a blast watching. The movie comes out this weekend, so make sure to check it out!

This morning, EA announced that they're rebooting their classic video game racing franchise Need For Speed with a new game that will deliver "deep customisation, authentic urban car culture, a nocturnal open world, and an immersive narrative that pulls you through the game." “Need for Speed is one of the most iconic names in gaming, and we're returning it to greatness in this reboot,” said Marcus Nilsson, Executive Producer at Ghost Games. “Pulling on our 20 years of history, and then taking a year out from releasing a game, we are making the game we’ve always wanted to. We're listening to the fans and delivering an experience that will capture their imagination and unleash their passion for cars and speed.”

Daredevil Fails To Explain Why His Superhero Name Isn't Batman in Funny Video

The team at Dorkly have put together another funny superhero parody video, and this one points out that Daredevil's superhero name probably should have been Batman. As you'll see, they sort of have a point there - especially when another superhero shows up who actually fits the name "Daredevil" much better.

Sinister Trailer For Horror Film THE GALLOWS

A full trailer has been released for an upcoming new horror film called The Gallows. The movie is apparently supposed to be incredibly scary. As a fan of the horror genre, it looks like it could be a fun flick regardless of the fact that it's a found-footage style film.

The film is set in a high school twenty years after an accident caused the death of the lead actor during a high school play, when "students at the same small town school resurrect the failed stage production in a misguided attempt to honor the anniversary of the tragedy—but ultimately find out that some things are better left alone."

The movie was an independent production by filmmakers Chris Lofing and Travis Cluff. They funded the movie through local investors and shot it on their own terms, and it was picked up by Blumhouse Pictures, who is the production company behind the Paranormal Activity films and the Insidious franchise.

The film will be released in theaters by New Line Cinema on July 10th. Thanks to MTV for the trailer.

Disneyland has debuted a new 'World of Color' celebration at Disney's California Adventure. This is a pretty cool event that they've had for several years already, and it combines music and effects along with video projects that are displayed on a wall of water. Disney updated the nighttime show for their 60th anniversary, and that update includes a Star Wars: The Force Awakens segment, and also offers up more history on Disney and its future.

I included video of the Star Wars segment, and another video that features the full show. The videos below come from Inside the Magic.

George Romero's Marvel Comic EMPIRE OF THE DEAD To Become A TV Series

The man who created the modern perception of zombies will now bring the undead to the small screen. Variety reports that George A. Romero, director of Night of the Living Dead — the film which redefined the idea of a zombie apocalypse — will write a new TV series based on his Marvel Comic Empire of the Dead. Demarest Films made the announcement at the Cannes Film Festival today, so this project is in the very early stages and doesn't have a network home yet.

Here's the official synopsis of Empire of the Dead's first issue:

Welcome to New York City years after the undead plague has erupted—but just because Manhattan has been quarantined, don’t think that everyone inside is safe! Not only do flesh-eaters roam within Manhattan, but there’s another ancient predator about to take a bite out of the Big Apple!

That other ancient predator they mention? Vampires. The combination of vampires and zombies should be enough to separate this from both The Walking Dead and The Strain, and the idea that the father of the zombie genre himself is writing it (alongside his partner Peter Grunwald) will obviously be a big draw for fans. That's all the information that's out there about this project at the moment, but we'll be sure to keep you up to date.

"Meet the most beautiful creature of the future."

Barbarella is such a fun sci-fi space adventure, and it's easily the best PG-but-should-have-been-R-rated film ever made. Artist Mel Milton created this charming piece of art that pays homage to the classic 1968 film. If you've never seen this movie, you should check it out. It's set in the 41st century, and Barbarella (Jane Fonda) roams space with her blind guardian angel, Pygar. I've always liked the retro sci-fi pulp vibe that this movie had. Here's the original trailer for the film as a little refresher.

Greg Grunberg Will Reprise His Role in HEROES REBORN

Greg Grunberg is set to reprise his role as the telepathic detective Matt Parkman in the upcoming limited series, Heroes Reborn. The news comes from Entertainment Weekly, who reports that he will have a guest-starring arc on the show. Other cast members of the original series who are coming back include Jack Coleman as H.R.G., Jimmy Jean-Louis as The Haitian, and Masi Oka as Hiro Nakamura.

The new series follows a "seemingly ordinary group of people who gradually become aware that they have special abilities." According to the plot description, the story develops "showing their reactions to these powers, and how this discovery affects their personal and professional lives."

Before Grunberg was cast in the show, he said he was interested in being a part of it:

“Well, you know, it’d be great to use that cop character as an investigative tool to find new people with power. I’m excited as a fan, to see what happens. If I can be a part of this, I would jump at the chance…None of us have been notified. We have no idea what’s going on. They hinted that they might use some of the old characters to move story and plot. I think the fans or whoever was watching the show before, which was the world, really wants closure. I don’t know how they would do this without using some of the main characters. I hope that they include me.”

And, they did! Heroes creator Tim Kring wrote and executive produced the new series, which also stars Zachary Levi (Chuck) along with Ryan Guzman (The Boy Next Door), Robbie Kay (Once Upon a Time), Danika Yarosh (Shameless), Judith Shekoni (The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2), Kiki Sukezane (Death Yankee 3), Henry Zebrowski (A to Z), and Gatlin Green (Criminal Minds).

It's going to be fun to see some of these hero characters back together again. Maybe Kring can recapture that magic that we liked so much about the first season of Heroes.

Video: Creating STAR WARS Characters at Madame Tussauds

I've never really thought about what goes into creating the wax figures at the famous Madame Tussauds before, but this behind-the-scenes video reveals the process of creating a bunch of Star Wars characters for their London location, and it's insane how much time is spent making these pieces. I had no idea that they used real human hair for the hair — 10,000 individual pieces for Mark Hamill, for example, all placed by hand — and it took ten people a staggering 800 hours to finish Chewbacca (they used yak hair for the Wookiee). Check out how it was all done in the video below:

DOPE Gets A Fly Red-Band Trailer

Dope, which was a big hit at Sundance earlier this year (read our review), continues to look excellent. Open Road has just released a new red-band trailer which allows you to see a little bit more of the naturalistic dialogue on display in the movie, as well as to get a better idea of the full scope of the plot. I watched about the first minute of this trailer before stopping it, because I'm already sold and don't want the entire story to be revealed for me. Check it out below and see what all the hype is about. The movie opens on June 19th.

DOPE tells the story of Malcolm (Shameik Moore) who is carefully surviving life in a tough neighborhood in Los Angeles.  A chance invitation to an underground party leads him into an adventure that could allow him to go from being a geek, to being dope, to ultimately being himself.

Here's a collection of hyper out-of-the-box art that has been created by various artists for an Avengers-inspired art show. The show was organized by a gallery named A Shop Called Quest. We've seen a lot of Avengers art recently, especially with Age of Ultron out in theaters, but this is a very unique set of art that is awesomely different from the kind of fan art we normally see. Check out several of the pieces that were included in the show below.

Rockstar Is Suing The BBC to Stop The GRAND THEFT AUTO TV Series

$

Looks like the new Grand Theft Auto TV show might have just been wasted.

For those who don't know, the BBC was working on a 90-minute series with the working title of Game Changer that would have followed the creation of and controversy surrounding Rockstar's popular Grand Theft Auto video game franchise, and they already had Daniel Radcliffe and Bill Paxton lined up to play the main parts. Radcliffe was to play Rockstar president Sam Houser while Paxton would have been U.S. lawyer Jack Thompson, a shady guy who wanted to ban video game violence. Production began on April 20th, so they may have even already finished shooting by now, but there's a chance the project may never make it to audiences, because Rockstar Games' parent company, Take-Two Interactive, has filed suit against the BBC.

Rockstar released a statement to IGN explaining their reasons for suing:

"Take-Two Interactive has filed suit against the BBC for trademark infringement based on their movie currently titled ‘Game Changer’ as it relates to Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto video game series.
"While holders of the trademarks referenced in the film title and its promotion, Rockstar Games has had no involvement with this project. Our goal is to ensure that our trademarks are not misused in the BBC's pursuit of an unofficial depiction of purported events related to Rockstar Games. We have attempted multiple times to resolve this matter with the BBC without any meaningful resolution. It is our obligation to protect our intellectual property and unfortunately in this case litigation was necessary."

So it sounds like it's mainly a matter of protecting their trademarks. But others have surmised that Rockstar is trying to suppress the project because they don't look very good in it, so there could be some ulterior motives at play here that we don't fully know about. With only a very basic understanding of the show's storyline, though, it sounds like Thompson would be the one who would come off as the crazier one, but I haven't read the script, so I can't say for certain what, if anything, might make Rockstar look bad.

I hope they get this all figured out, because I'd love to see this story told on the small screen. It has a great cast and it's an interesting story that not a lot of people know, so it'd be a shame if it was stifled completely.

BREAKING BAD-Themed Bar Coming to London This Summer

$

Vince Gilligan's Breaking Bad came to an end back in 2013, but I still find myself thinking about it all the time. Not just comparing it to its spin-off, Better Call Saul (an unfair comparison, I know), but thinking about snatches of dialogue, actors' facial expressions, and even the occasional unorthodox time lapse. It's a show that's going to stick with me for a long, long time, and one I'm looking forward to revisiting as soon as I can.

If you live in or near London, you can take it a step further and visit ABQ, a Breaking Bad-themed bar opening this July that's named for the city in which the critically acclaimed series took place (Albuquerque, New Mexico). It's a pop-up bar that's inside an RV, and it'll cost you 30 pounds for a two hour visit inside the 22-person capacity establishment. Using “gas masks, smoke, and equipment familiar from your chemistry classes,” patrons will be helped by employees to "cook" their own cocktails. Sounds like a cool experience...if you can get in. The super small space requires a mailing list to make reservations, so even if you're the one who knocks, they might not open the door. Just tell 'em you're the danger, and see if that does the trick. Visit the official site here for more info.

IMAX Featurette For Brad Bird's TOMORROWLAND

Joey loved Brad Bird's Tomorrowland (you can read his review right here), and though I really appreciate and connected with the film's main message, I ultimately found the movie disappointing. I'm still deciding on whether or not to expand on those thoughts further in another piece for the site, but in the meantime, you can check out this IMAX featurette for the film. Regardless of my overall disappointment, some of the movie's visuals are truly spectacular and would absolutely be best witnessed on the biggest possible screen. For me, the experience of watching a film doesn't get any better than seeing it in IMAX. Watch as Bird and star Britt Robertson try to convince you of the same thing.

Possible CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Spoilers Involving The Winter Soldier

possible-captain-america-civil-war-spoilers-involving-the-winter-soldier

There have been a lot photos from the set of Captain America: Civil War featuring Captain America (Chris Evans), Crossbones (Frank Grillo), Falcon (Anthony Mackie), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), and Ant-Man (Paul Rudd). You can check out the most recent batch of photos here. Thanks to report from Lainey Gossip, who has apparently been dropping little Marvel scoops here and there, we now have some details on that fight scene between Cap and Crossbones, as well as some information on Bucky Barnes a.k.a. The Winter Soldier's part of the story.

As always, if you don't want to know what these details are, don't read ahead due to SPOILERS. Yeah, they may only be rumors for now, but there's a good chance there's some truth to what's being reported.

The scene that they have been shooting in the set photos we've seen is said to be the first big action sequence in the movie, and a lot of innocent bystanders are going to die. Because of this, the world government is going to "start cracking down on superhero activity."

It's then that Tony Stark becomes the leader of a team who supports the government control of superheroes and Captain America leads the team who's against it. So what does this all have to do with Bucky?

Well, Captain America wants to save his best friend, and Stark wants to get his hands on the guy who murdered his parents, and he's most likely using the government registration act to do this. Crossbones wants Bucky as well, because "he wants his brainwashed Hydra pet back." As we previously reported, Black Panther is also after him, possibly because his father was murdered by him, but that's not confirmed.

So basically everyone is after Bucky, but Cap is the only one that doesn't want to kill him. The report goes on to say that Civil War is a critical moment for Bucky because "he has to get everyone on his side by the end of this movie, because his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is about to get a lot bigger."

This falls in line with certain things that I've heard about the movie, so it will be interesting to see how this actually all plays out on the big screen. What do you all think about these potential plot points in the story?

Gabrielle Union Joins Jamie Foxx in SLEEPLESS NIGHT and Key & Peele in KEANU

Back in January, a remake of the French action thriller Sleepless Night was announced with Jamie Foxx in the lead role. He's playing a corrupt cop who has to retrieve a bag of cocaine in order to save his son's life, and Michelle Monaghan is playing an internal affairs officer trying to track him down. Now THR reports that actress Gabrielle Union has joined the cast as Foxx's ex-wife, "who figures into the Foxx's rescue." Grammar aside, I'm hoping her "figuring" means that she'll actually be able to kick some ass herself instead of hanging out on the sidelines.

Union is also in final negotiations to join Keanu, the first film that co-stars comedy duo Key & Peele as the lead characters. Peter Attencio, who directs all of the episodes of K&P's Comedy Central show, is directing, and the story follows "two friends who decide to act like gangster drug dealers in order to retrieve a stolen kitten." Union will play Key's character's wife, "who wishes her polite lawyer-of-a-husband would assert himself in and outside their marriage." I love Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, and I'm really looking forward to seeing what they do in their first feature film together. Union sounds like an excellent addition to the cast, so hopefully she'll be able to spotlight some of her comedic talents in that one.

Imaginative Fantasy Anime Short Film — KOISHI

Hikari Toriumi created this beautifully animated short film called Koishi as his first year film at CalArts. It's an imaginative fantasy short done in an anime style. It's impressive work, and here's a brief explanation of what it's about:

A boy overcomes the loss of his father through the encounter with the spirits of ancestor. The title is a Japanese pun, "KOI" being the kind of fish used for the flag designs and "KOISHI (こいし)" meaning "I miss you".

As you'll see, this is a very talented artist, and it seems like he's going to have a bright future with whatever he ends up doing. I can't wait to see what his next project turns out to be.

Reese Witherspoon to Star in Disney's Live-Action Tinker Bell Film

Disney has teamed up with Reese Witherspoon to bring a live-action Tinker Bell movie called Tink to the big screen. The actress is attached to star in and produce the film, which as you know, is based on the classic Peter Pan fairy character.

The script for the movie is being written by Victoria Strouse, who also developed the script for Pixar’s upcoming film Finding Dory. There’s no director attached to helm the project yet.

According to THR, the movie “will play with the idea and the timeline of the well-known Peter Pan narrative.” They also said that it will be in the same vein as Maleficent and that this Tinker Bell movie is being conceived as “the story you don’t know” and will “offer a new perspective on the character.”

Tinker Bell made her big screen debut in Disney's classic animated Peter Pan movie in 1953 and has since become a main magical symbol of the Disney brand.

Witherspoon is a solid actress who sometimes chooses crappy projects. Tinker Bell seems like it could be a great fit for her. Hopefully it ends up being better than Maleficent
