Animated SPIDER-MAN Feature Film Coming in 2018!

We have some more exciting Spider-Man movie news for you! Sony Pictures has announced that they will be developing a animated feature film based on the webslinger! The news gets even better, as they've hired The LEGO Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller to write the treatment for the film and produce it.

Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman revealed the big news at CinemaCon in Las Vegas today, saying that the movie will be released in theaters on July 20th, 2018. Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, and Amy Pascal were also announced as being producers on the project.

In case you're wondering, the animated movie will not be connected to the live-action Spider-Man universe that Marvel and Sony are currently developing. I've always thought that Spider-Man would work great as an animated movie, so it's really cool to see that it's happening.

I hope this ignites some interest in Marvel to develop animated movies of their own as standalone films not connected to the MCU. Hopefully, we will see that happen one day. Disney did it with Big Hero Six, but Marvel wasn't really a part of that.

Simon Pegg on STAR TREK 3 and Creating a “Kickass” Role for Idris Elba

Yesterday we learned that Star Trek 3 might end up being called Star Trek Beyond. It seems like an appropriate title for the movie, as this next chapter moves the characters out into their five-year-mission to explore new worlds and new civilizations.

During a recent interview with MTV, co-writer Simon Pegg talked a little bit about the film and explained that he’s writing a kickass role for Idris Elba, who will be playing a villain.

“Idris is an extraordinary actor and we’re trying to write him a kickass role. This is the five year mission, we’re out there. We don’t need to keep bumping into the same five people. It’s a massive universe!”

This will be the thirteenth film in the franchise, and Pegg wants to do something special with his co-writer Doug Jung that fans will be happy with. To do this, Pegg explained that they are pulling inspiration from Star Trek: The Original Series

“It’s an incredible show when you watch it — how little they had. We think of Star Trek as this huge thing, but it started out as these thoughtful plays with small sets… dealing with incredibly human and intellectual ideas.
“We can certainly invest in the spirit of the show and get back to the essence of what it is. We’re hoping to make a Star Trek for today that doesn’t forget where it came from.”

I’ve really enjoyed what J.J. Abrams has done with the first two movies, and I’m looking forward to seeing what Justin Lin delivers in this one. Star Trek 3 starts shooting in June, and it will be released July 8th, 2016.

Every other Monday, our team of blacksmiths and craftsman will be building some of your favorite weapons, and some weapons that you’ve never seen before. This week, we’re recreating Loki’s Staff, the Chitauri Scepter, from the Avengers.

Joss Whedon Discusses Marvel Characters Coming Back from the Dead

It was initially difficult to watch Agent Coulson die in The Avengers. He was a character a lot of fans came to love, which is why Marvel set events into motion that brought him back to life for the TV series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. At first I thought it was cool that Coulson was coming back, but now I’m kind of wishing they had left him dead, especially since it does’t sound like he’ll be coming back for any of the other Marvel movies.

In an interview with Mental Floss, Joss Whedon discussed several things such as wanting to work on original projects again and what it’s like working with Marvel and the policies that they have set in place for their films. But one of the more interesting things he discussed were his feelings on Marvel bringing Agent Phil Coulson and other characters back to life.

When asked about the various Marvel movie characters who have seemingly died in the MCU, and how many more times do he thinks a character’s death can have an impact if it doesn’t have a permanent effect, he said:

“A lot of people come back in The Winter Soldier. It’s a grand Marvel tradition. Bucky was supposed to die. And the Coulson thing was, I think, a little anomalous just because that really came from the television division, which is sort of considered to be its own subsection of the Marvel universe. As far as the fiction of the movies, Coulson is dead.
“But I have to say, watching the first one with my kids—I had not watched the first one since it came out—and then watching it with my kids and watching Coulson die but [thinking], 'Yeah, but I know that he kind of isn’t,' it did take some of the punch out of it for me. Of course, I spent a lot of time making sure he didn’t. And at the time it seemed inoffensive, as long as it wasn’t referenced in the second movie, which it isn’t.
“There’s a thing where you can do that so many times and there’s nothing at stake. But it’s difficult because you’re living in franchise world—not just Marvel, but in most big films—where you can’t kill anyone, or anybody significant. And now I find myself with a huge crew of people and, although I’m not as bloodthirsty as some people like to pretend, I think it’s disingenuous to say we’re going to fight this great battle, but there’s not going to be any loss. So my feeling in these situations with Marvel is that if somebody has to be placed on the altar and sacrificed, I’ll let you guys decide if they stay there.”

The death of Coulson definitely would have had a much stronger impact had he actually died. If Marvel keep giving us these fake deaths, whenever we see someone seemingly die on the big screen, we just aren’t going to buy into it, and it will loose its effect. Hell, we may already have lost it!

Unless they come back as zombies, maybe some of these Marvel characters should just stay dead. What do you think?

Oscar Isaac on X-MEN: APOCALYPSE Plot and Assembling The Four Horsemen

Apocalypse is a great X-Men villain, and I love that Bryan Singer is finally going to bring him into the films. The character was teased during the post-credits sequence of X-Men: Days of Future Past, and it going to be interesting to see how exactly the villain will be handled in X-Men: Apocalypse

In the film we will see Apocalypse bring together his four horsemen, who are made up of former members of the X-Men team. In an interview with IGN, Oscar Isaac, who is playing the the villain, talked about the recruitment of the horsemen and the plot in the upcoming movie.

“Without giving anything away, the recruitment of the Four Horsemen is very cool, It’s very interesting the way that he does that. You know the idea of – the way that cult leaders do – they find people that are in need of something and try to fulfill that thing in them – as it relates to every one of the Horseman….On an individual level he’s able to reveal the true power of his Horsemen and what’s true to them. And I think to reveal the weakness – how weak we’ve become. Because this is an ancient entity. So to come to – I think 1983 – and say, ‘How did the world become so weak? How did we allow ourselves to become to weak and to enslave ourselves.’ I think that’s where he’s coming from.”

When the actor was asked if he's excitement about playing a character who has a several different forms and powers, he replied:

“Absolutely. And at the same time figuring out what the limits are and how it relates to how he moves and what it costs him. That’s always a fun thing. So to be able to sit with [writer/producer] Simon Kinberg and – as a fan – just go through it and be like, ‘Well what about this!?! You know, this is something that he does in the comics and is there a way to incorporate this? Or if he has this power suddenly how do we make that not come out of nowhere?’ So it’s really fun to map that thing out. But yes, the nature of how his powers manifest themselves is to a certain extent quite open to interpretation. Because there are so many and they are so vast.”

Isaac stars alongside an impressive cast of actors that includes James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, and Rose Byrne, who are all reprising their roles from the previous movies. We will also see the return of Evan Peters as Quicksilver and newcomers Alexandra Shipp as Storm, Sophie Turner Jean Grey, Kodi Smit-McPhee as Nightcrawler, Ben Hardy as Angel, Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, and Olivia Munn as Psylocke.

X-Men: Apocalypse is apparently going to be the conclusion of a trilogy that started with X-Men: First Class and will be released on May 27th, 2016.

Denzel Washington’s THE EQUALIZER Will Get a Sequel

denzel-washingtons-the-equalizer-will-get-a-sequel

Denzel Washington's The Equalizer was a surprisingly great movie. I didn't really know what to expect when I went to see it, but it was a badass action-packed thriller! Sony Pictures has officially announced that they will be developing a sequel, and Washington is expected to reprise his role as vigilante Robert McCall.

The film franchise is based on a 1980s TV series and revolves around a very intriguing character. McCall is a retired black ops agent who tries to atone for past transgressions by helping people, and I think it's great that they are going to explore him more in another movie. The first film followed the character as he takes on the Russian mob to help save a young girl played by Chloe Moretz.

Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) directed the first film, but there's no confirmation on whether or not he’ll return for the sequel. He and Washington make a great team, so I hope that they come back together for the sequel. We do know that they are going to reteam on MGM’s upcoming remake of The Magnificent Seven, which reunites them with Ethan Hawke, who also worked with them on Training Day.

SAINT SEIYA: The World's Most Popular Anime You've Never Heard Of

0
0

It's crazy that there has been zero talk about the recent revival of the Saint Seiya series. That all changed when the first episode of Saint Seiya: Soul Of Gold received over 2 million streams in the past 10 days on various services. This staggering number, which is impressive for any anime, was oddly enough seen in much larger numbers overseas than here in the U.S. With the second episode set to premiere this Saturday on Crunchyroll, I figured I might try to get us a little better inducted so we can jump in on the craze.

Saint Seiya is a huuuuuge deal in Japan. Its original adaptation is listed consistently in the upper 20s of top anime lists, and as of 2013 its original manga had sold over 34 million copies! Furthermore, Saint Seiya has been noted to be the primary inspiration behind two majorly successful anime — Bleach and Mobile Suit Gundam Wing. It has a discography of over 13 albums, and numerous video games to boot. Finally, it is widely considered as one of the staples that helped bring the '80s anime craze to life. With all that hype, I already know you are wondering why we aren't screaming from the rafters about the revival of this series stateside.

The reason, most speculate, is that it got a s*** revamp when it came to America. The original series (which aired in 1987) was picked up by Cartoon Network in 2003 and was heavily edited for American audiences to better fit a children's/afternoon audience. The new edit, "Knights of the Zodiac" cut much of the violence, colored all the blood blue and called it "mystical energy," rewrote the entire script, and only aired 35 episodes of the series.

And they had Bowling for Soup cover Flock of Seagulls for the Intro to the show...

Was it terrible? I watched this episode of Knights of the Zodiac and thought "that wasn't so bad..." Then I watched the original first episode...

Holy f***

In the first two minutes I was convinced I was going to see this series through to the end. First off, the '80s anime style is like Akira meets American '80s action cartoon. Visually, the colors pop and shine in comparison to the contemporary pastels most modern anime use. The setting is dystopian future, but if the future were run by the Greek gods, so it still has that classical element to the design of buildings. The best I can find to show you what I'm talking about is this Youtube clip below. Mind you it's in Spanish, because once again, we never really drank the Seiya flavored Koolaid here.

Hopefully that gave you a brief taste of the superiority the original has over what you may have watched on Toonami in 2003. There has been no English dub of the original series, but if you are down for subtitles, Crunchyroll has the entire original series as well as its spin offs available for streaming right now. I suggest you check that out first to get a general idea of the story because I'll be honest, I enjoyed SS Soul of Gold but had no idea what the f*** was going on through most of it.

If you aren't sure you'll invest that much time for a show you may or may not like here's a quick breakdown.

  • The world was in chaos and almost destroyed until the Greek Gods showed up
  • Now humans compete for the honor of being bestowed the power of the Gods...making them saints to their corresponding Gods.
  • Seiya is the main character of the series, and he becomes a saint of the Goddess Athena.
  • The saints of Athena are super powerful and only use their fists and legs to fight.
  • Space and our role in the Cosmos plays a big part in the OG series...don't know if it'll play into the new series at all.

That should be just enough to keep you from being completely confused if you just decide to stick with Saint Seiya: Soul of Gold, but I highly recommend you check out Saint Seiya: Sanctuary between episodes because it really lives up to the hype almost 30 years later. Hopefully you check it out as I've gone from a clueless westerner to full-fledged fan in the course of a couple days, and I can't wait for this Saturday's new episode.

BREAKING BAD Creator Developing Jack and the Beanstalk Movie at Disney

0

I was very curious to see what Vince Gilligan would do after his wildly successful AMC series Breaking Bad came to an end. Battle Creek, a procedural TV project he developed years before Breaking Bad, landed with somewhat of a thud on CBS, and Better Call Saul just wrapped up its first season on AMC. But the last thing I expected from Gilligan was an entry on Disney's ever-growing list of live-action adaptations of its classic films.

According to Deadline, Disney has bought Beanstalk, a "revisionist" take on the Jack and the Beanstalk story that's based on a detailed outline by Gilligan. The Breaking Bad creator has tasked Emmy-winning BB/Better Call Saul writer Thomas Schnauz with writing the full screenplay based on his outline, and he's eyeing the project as a potential directing gig. It's still early, though, so he may move on to something else; at the very least, Gilligan will produce the film alongside Mark Johnson.

Though Disney made a short based on the tale way back in 1922, the Jack and the Beanstalk story has gotten the big screen treatment twice in the past few years, with Bryan Singer's Jack The Giant Slayer not really connecting with audiences and the revisionist musical Into the Woods also failing to make much of a cultural impact. Will Gilligan's take be different enough to overcome people's apparent disinterest in this story in the modern age? I hope so, because I like the guy a lot and watching him transition back into a film career — he wrote the 2008 superhero film Hancock, remember? — would be very interesting to see.

Disney's TOMORROWLAND Origin Explained in 2 Animated Videos

Disney has released two must-watch animated videos that explains the backstory of director Brad Bird's upcoming sci-fi adventure film Tomorrowland. One of the best parts about the videos is that they are wonderfully narrated by voice actor Maurice LaMarche (Pinky and the Brain, Futurama).

The promo videos tells the story of Plus Ultra, which is a fictional organization founded at the 1889 Paris World’s Fair by Nikola Tesla, Jules Verne, Gustave Eiffel, and Thomas Edison. They were dedicated to the cultivation of human imagination, and together they would build their dream, a place where nothing is impossible...Tomorrowland.

Tomorrowland will be released in theaters on May 22nd, 2015.

Behind The Kickstarter: Orcs Must Die The Boardgame with Sandy Petersen

0
0

I had the pleasure of speaking with renowned game designer Sandy Petersen, whose career has run the gamut from working on classic franchises like Age of Empires, to his more recent original creation Cthulhu Wars. Currently he is working on Orcs Must Die! The Boardgame. The game has already generated $173,279 and has 9 days to go. Here is our conversation about the game, working with Robot Entertainment, Kickstarter, and the need for superhero costumes.

GeekTyrant: You are just about to reach $143,000 (as of this writing) and overall the campaign has been immensely successful. With that comes even more responsibility though, and with more funding comes more stretch goals, which adds an extra workload to your team to deliver by February 2016. Hitting $150,000 by the end of the campaign is a real possibility, and to some it can be pretty tempting to throw the kitchen sink in once you’ve raised this much, as far as stretch goals go, which has been the undoing of many a project. Is there pressure to keep adding and adding components the more money comes in? Or was the plan firmly in place at the beginning to the point that, whether it be 48 grand or 5 million, the plan and approach was not changing?

Sandy Petersen: We try to be as flexible and responsive to the flow of the campaign as possible. While I want to remain true to the vision of the game, the only reason to produce it is to please those who play it, and they are the people funding me so it makes sense to converse with them, listen to them, and understand their desires.

GT: You also had a very successful Kickstarter not too long ago with Cthulhu Wars. Did you and the team make any changes to how you handled this project as opposed to your process for Cthulhu Wars?

SP: Of course! Two obvious changes are that this campaign doesn’t have the much-hated Early Bird pledges, and that the game is split into two parts (each of which is a full game in itself) which means that we have a less-expensive version for people on a budget who still want the experience.

GT: I can’t help but agree about the early bird pledges. Sometimes you don’t hear about a project right away, and by the time you get there sometimes it feels as if you’re missing out.

GT: You’ve commented on how much you’ve enjoyed working with Robot on this project, as you have a great deal of friends and students working at the company now. As a whole though, do you prefer working with an established IP and trying to create a new way to experience that brand, or would you rather shepherd your own creation?

SP: In general I am not a fan of IPs, except for those you create on your own. However, the Orcs Must Die! IP seemed like a natural, given my close relationship to Robot.

GT: While we are on the subject, is there another IP or universe that you have always wanted to work in or explore?

SP: There are several, but my general distaste of IPs has so far kept me well away from them all. I guess if I was able to pick and choose ANYTHING in the world to base a licensed property on, it would be Godzilla.

GT: I have a few friends who are going to read that and lose their collective minds, as they would love to see that Godzilla game happen, but I understand the appeal of creating your own world and seeing it to fruition.

Being that you are working with an IP this time around, what has been the most challenging aspect of the franchise to implement into board game form? While most things can transfer over quite well with some time and ingenuity, there must be some aspects of a video game that don’t lend themselves to the table top, or is that not true?

SP: I am in the fortunate position that I am trusted as a designer by Robot, so they have given me carte blanche to work with their license to build the best game possible based on the core ideas only. I think our experience with the Age of Empires III board game done by Eagle Games helped with this. It was only based on our computer game in the loosest possible manner. That said, the idea of doing a co-op game combining combat & tower defense seemed like it would be really fun for me, and also a genre not really exploited in the board game world. The hardest part has been to make it both a co-op AND a rivalry team game, in which one side fights the other. The balancing mechanisms for co-op and Player-vs-player are so different it has been a bit of a chore.

GT: Using an example from comics to movies, Wolverine's Yellow and Blue uniform (Astonishing) is my favorite Wolverine costume, but to me it would look absolutely dreadful on screen, so I begrudgingly accept that I won’t ever see it recreated there.

I love both of these. Maybe the yellow and blue can work in film after all?

I love both of these. Maybe the yellow and blue can work in film after all?

SP: Spider-Man’s blue & red costume makes no sense in reality either, let’s face it. Of course, in general if there were real superheroes, why wear costumes at all? It’s part of the genre I suppose, but it seems highly artificial to me.

GT: Well, you do have a point in that. However, I will say that reading a comic about a bunch of people in their Old Navy shirts and cargo shorts just doesn’t have the same allure, haha.

Orcs Must Die (the original game and its sequel) is very easy to get into after a few tries. It had plenty of depth, but also a very gradual pace and pick up speed, even to newer players. Orcs Must Die! The Boardgame is made up of several decks, miniatures, traps, tiles, etc, and looks like a blast, but how welcoming is it for newer board game players?

SP: The rules are pretty easy to play. I am a big fan of being able to get into games quickly. While I own and enjoy a lot of games with complex rules, I don’t design games that way. If you are familiar at all with Cthulhu Wars you know what I mean. It’s about a 10-15 minute rules explanation and you’re ready to go. With Orcs Must Die, it’s even shorter and you’re in. The depth comes from having a variety of heroes, maps, monsters, bosses, items, traps, and other interactions, not from the core rules being onerous to parse.

GT: The reason I ask is over the last few years I have had the opportunity to play with a bevy of newcomers to these more involved (and let's not forget rewarding) types of board games. When in the design phase, how much emphasis is put on keeping the game approachable to new players, or is that even something that concerns you? There are many people who believe that if you build something to be fun and deep, people will eventually give it a try regardless of its learning curve.

ORCSMustDie_ItemTrapCardDiv.jpg

SP: And I agree with those people. But that’s not the way I design my games. I think part of it is my video game background. You want someone playing it and having fun in the first 5 minutes. Another part is that while I like 5-6 hour games like Arkham Horror, I don’t feel I need to compete with them. We already HAVE Arkham Horror, so Cthulhu Wars didn’t have to be another one. Similarly, Orcs Must Die! The Boardgame doesn’t have to be another Warhammer. It can be a fun, fast-moving co-op game with plenty of moving parts that can be fitted together in different ways to produce an ever-new experience which is always easy to get into.

GT: Apologies, almost slipped in a Field of Dreams “if you build it, they will come” reference, but guess now it's out of the bag.

GT: While we are talking about the industry as a whole, Table Top Gaming has seen a resurgence over the last few years. Why do you think that is? Is it just the cycle of things coming in and out of fashion? Or just a fading stereotype that board games of this ilk are for basement dwellers with Doritos and Mountain Dew?

SP: I think that the re-invention of board games in (mainly) Germany during the 1980s is what has driven this. Before Settlers of Catan and Puerto Rico, board games were overlong, too complicated, and often tedious. Remember Risk, Stratego, and Monopoly? Those are actually pretty poor excuses for games. With the advent of stuff like Carcassone, we have games which are quick to play, the whole family can enjoy, and they are over in 1-2 hours tops. I think board games are definitely here to stay – they have been swelling in interest since 1990 and shown no signs of stopping.

GT: I love how there are two different games to back, The Order and Unchained Respectively, and how they can work together for fans who want a totally different experience. You even went as far as to have different stats on a good portion of the units (25% is a pretty good ratio). You could have left them the same and I don’t think anyone would have seriously wailed, but it illustrates an attention to detail and general feeling of going above and beyond in delivering a polished product, which, let's face it, is something that not all Kickstarters have excelled in.

One of two new heroes added via new Stretch Goals

One of two new heroes added via new Stretch Goals

GT: In fact, let's talk about that for a minute. Even just over the last 2 years, Kickstarter as a whole has undergone changes a plenty, and along with that come changes in what consumers expect from the final product. Over the course of your campaign, you can see how you all have tried to keep an open rapport with your backers, and I love Sandy’s Corner. It helps backers not feel like an afterthought, and when it comes to projects like these, it really does end up being a community of gamers by the end of the process. How has the process been in regards to implementing fan feedback into your games, and how has the interaction with the community been overall?

SP: Thanks! Really I consider my backers to be both partners and friends. I’ve tried to make it clear that I am part of their community. As just one note: obviously with anything related to the internet, you can come across unreasoning hatred, hostility, and trolling. My fans have been so supportive that I never have to respond to attacks. I know for sure that some fan will leap to my defense and make a case on my behalf better than I would have done myself. Of course, they catch me up when I get too sanguine or say something stupid, but that is valuable too.

GT: Well I truly thank you for taking time out of your hectic schedule to talk to me, and I wish you nothing but success on Orcs Must Die as well as your future projects. Thanks for your time!

All right, there you have it. I've gotta say I really enjoyed that, and if you’re interested in backing Orcs Must Die! The Boardgame, it's still not too late, and they have added 6 new stretch goals. You can also find Sandy Peterson’s other work here.

Wildly Fun Animated Adventure Short — BATZ

You've got to watch this awesomely fun and over-the-top animated adventure short film called Batz. It was created by Max Maleo and Aurélien Predal, and the story follows two bat characters named Vamp and Rouss. "Their explosive meeting will propel them into a crazy adventure that will put their lives upside down!"

The animation done for the film is freakin' great quality work! It's just as good as the stuff that you might see in an animated feature film. There are many fun unexpected surprises packed into this absolutely crazy short, and I know you'll have a blast watching it.

Joss Whedon Bummed About Missing Out On SPIDER-MAN Action

0
0

Avengers: Age of Ultron might be the last Marvel film that Joss Whedon directs. Maybe one day he'll come back into the fold, but it's definitely not going to happen in Phase 3. The Avengers have been handed off to Joe and Anthony Russo, and they are also going to be the directors who get to play with Spider-Man in the MCU.

During an interview with with Yahoo!, Whedon was asked about Spider-Man and the fake post-credits footage that hit the internet, which caught the attention of a lot of fans. The director confirms that the footage is fake. When asked if he would have enjoyed working with Spider-Man, he seemed a little bummed out that he would be missing out, saying:

"Yeah [I’d like to have worked on Spider-Man], he’s the poster child. He’s the first book I read, and I think that’s true for a lot of people. There are so many things I would want to do, even with these characters [The Avengers], even with just one of these characters. But the fact of the matter is: they’re doing fine, and I’ve probably got to move on."

I would have loved to see Whedon play with Spider-Man in the MCU, but the character is still in good hands, and I'm sure fans are going to be very happy with how the character is developed from here on out. As sad as I am that Whedon is moving away from the Marvel films, it's great to know that he will be developing his own projects.

Paul Bettany, who plays The Vision in Age of Ultron, also talked about Spider-Man joining the MCU in an interview, saying:

"I think it’s great that Marvel and Sony have worked this out. Because these films are made by fans and to see Spider-Man come to life in these movies, where he should be… is going to be great."

Yesterday the names of five young actors popped up who are up for the role of Spider-Man. In case you missed that click here. It was also announced that Sony Pictures is developing a standalone animated feature film for the character as well.

Father Puts His Baby Daughter To Sleep Using Darth Vader Noises

I don't have kids, but I'm guessing most parents would do just about anything to make their newborn infants happy if they're crying. If you're a parent that also happens to be a geek, then you probably have a lot of pop culture references in your playbook that you can use at your disposal, and Buddy Crotty had no problem using the Dark Side of the Force in order to appease his newborn daughter.

Common Joins Cast of SUICIDE SQUAD, But Who Is He Playing?

Many people (myself included) are more interested in Suicide Squad than Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. It doesn't bear the weight of having to set up the Justice League and prove to the world that the DCCU is a viable plan, and since Suicide Squad is already in production, there's no danger of it being cancelled before we ever get to see it. Plus, it has a pretty awesome cast, and I'm interested to see how an A-list star like Will Smith plays in an ensemble.

Well, that already-impressive cast continues to expand. THR reports that rapper/actor Common has joined the cast of David Ayer's new movie, but they aren't certain which character he'll play. Could it be Green Lantern? He was cast in that role a few years ago, back when George Miller was going to make a Justice League movie. That project fell apart due to the Writers' Strike, but with a Green Lantern solo film on the horizon (currently planned for 2020), it's conceivable that WB would give Common another shot at playing John Stewart.

But that's only speculation. We'll have to wait until someone figures out who he's really playing, but in the mean time, I'd love to hear your guesses in the comments below.

Suicide Squad stars Will Smith (Deadshot), Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flagg), Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Killer Croc), Jay Hernandez (El Diablo), Karen Fukuhara (Plastique), Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang), Cara Delevingne (Enchantress), Viola Davis (Amanda Waller), Jared Leto (Joker), and Ike Barinholtz, and it hits theaters on August 5th, 2016.

Disney STAR WARS Cruise Ship Adds a Millennium Falcon Play Area!

If you've ever wanted to play around in Han Solo's Millennium Falcon, the closest you might ever get to doing that is on Disney's Star Wars cruise ship. A couple of months ago Disney announced that they would have a Star Wars Day at Sea event that would include characters such as Darth Vader, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Luke Skywalker, C-3PO, R2-D2, and more.

The initial announcement said there would be Jedi Training Academy and a night club that will make clubgoers feel like they stepped into the Mos Eisley cantina scene. Now we can add a Millennium Falcon play area to the list of awesomeness. The news comes from cnet, who explains:

The retooled area on the cruise ship called Disney Dream will place young guests of Disney's Oceaneer Club aboard the Millennium Falcon in a play zone inspired by the interiors of Han Solo's famous ship from Star Wars.
Kids (and hopefully us adults as well) can sit in the cockpit, assist with navigation, and pilot the Falcon through hyperspace to jump to light speed in a galaxy far, far away.

I couldn't think of a better place for kids and adults to swing lightsabers at each other.

While the amazing-looking Mad Max: Fury Road will arrive in theaters in just a few weeks, gamers will be able to dive into the post-apocalyptic world and explore it on their own in September when a new video game called Mad Max finally hits shelves. We've seen a couple of videos from the game already, but now there's a new one (via ComingSoon) that showcases some solid gameplay footage. The fighting mechanics look a little like Uncharted, the Arkham games, or Tomb Raider, but the driving element is obviously a unique component that those other games don't really share. What do you all think about this game so far?

Enter The Wasteland, and get your first extended look at the car customization, metal grinding vehicular combat, brutal melee combat, and much more that awaits you in Mad Max, available September 1, 2015 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

All footage in the trailer is in-engine, comprised of actual gameplay and in-game cinematics.

Brian Michael Bendis Discusses Iceman Coming Out in X-Men Comic

Over the last couple of days we've been hearing a lot about issue #40 of All New X-Men, in which Iceman comes out of the closet. This news came from some pages of the comic being leaked to the public, which we reported on yesterday. In response to the leak, Brian Michael Bendis, writer of the comic, spoke with CBR to talk about the choice.

The first thing he talked about was the fact that this reveal wasn't supposed to be a big deal.  They didn't make a point to mention it in solicits or anything. Bendis said:

"Here's the thing, and some will believe me and some won't. I think if you really paid attention to the solicits, we mentioned nothing about the subject. We didn't do a cover asking, "Which X-Men is coming out?" We didn't do anything like that, because we agreed that it was best to let the story speak for itself."

That aspect was just a small part that came out from a bigger story. He goes on to say that it was just a special moment between the characters of Bobby and Jean. It had no pre-hype and none of the comic stores were made aware of anything. The same thing could be said about the Utopians who will play a more major role down the line. Brian just wanted these things to be surprises to readers without all the hubbub:

"You and I have talked about how, wouldn't it be nice if you went to the comic store and not everything was ruined? So on top of what's going on with Bobby, I didn't want anyone to know who the Utopians were. I just wanted to let it happen without any sensationalism."

It is unknown who the leaker is; it's speculated it could be anyone who had contact with the pages before their release and took some crappy pictures with their phone. Mr. Bendis goes on to talk about how many of the opinions are split about whether Bobby Drake coming out of the closet is completely out of the blue or if there are hints to Iceman's sexuality in previous comics leading up to this one:

"Yes! That's the funniest conversation online. We have some people going, "What on Earth are you talking about? Where did this come from?" Then there are other people who weren't surprised at all. Already on Tumblr, and I'm not going to repost them until later in the week, people have posted a road map of panels of things that Bobby has done over the last 50 years that prove the point that I thought was obvious, and many others did too."

He then says that many more questions people have about Bobby's sexuality, both young Bobby and old Bobby, will be answered in the issues to come.

So here's the headline: This isn't the final statement on Bobby's very unique story. And it is not a universal statement on sexual identity, it's Bobby's unique one. The other portions have already been written and are being produced as we speak. Before I leave the X-Men on "Uncanny" #600, more layers will be peeled off of this, including what this means for older Bobby. I think we address all the big questions.

It seems that whatever decisions are made, Marvel stands behind Brian Michael Bendis, which is great to hear. I myself have read the comic, and it is fantastic. Not just that one part either. It shows the aftermath of a few different issues that have taken place since the big Black Vortex arc. If you haven't read that, go check it out. It also sets up a really cool new story with characters from the past. Plus the art by Mahmud Asrar is beautiful. He really nails facial complexities and sincerity.

One thing from the interview that strikes a chord with me is the issue of leaks. It seems that as we live in this modern world, there are many blessings to being able to receive information quickly and succinctly — however, there is a cost. With leaks and news spreading so quickly, unless we hermit ourselves away, we lose spontaneity in our entertainment. We lose moments of real surprise. It happens in comics, movies, and even TV series. There is a certain joy that comes from watching or reading something as a whole that you just don't get when things are spoiled for you. Those are just some of my own thoughts, but seriously, this comic is awesome and has so much more to offer than just those pages. Please check it out.

STAR WARS: ROGUE ONE — Sam Claflin and Riz Ahmed Could Join The Cast

Following the events of Star Wars Celebration, director Gareth Edwards spoke about the tone of his war movie Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One, and how we should "expect the unexpected." But one of the things we do expect is that the film's cast will be spectacular, and that's already proving to be true with the confirmation of Felicity Jones and the heavily rumored news that Ben Mendolsohn is on board.

Badass Digest reports that Riz Ahmed is attached to the film, playing one of the main characters in what is described as a Dirty Dozen or Magnificent Seven-style ensemble. Ahmed played Jake Gyllenhaal's character's sidekick Rick in last year's Nightcrawler, and he'd be a terrific addition to the cast of Rogue One. Additionally, The Wrap says that not only is Mendolsohn a lock for the movie, but The Hunger Games star Sam Claflin is the frontrunner for one of the larger ensemble roles as well. I'm not quite sold on Claflin as a star, but I wouldn't necessarily be disappointed to see him pop up in an ensemble cast like this.

We should be hearing a lot more about casting for this movie very soon since filming gets underway this summer, and these reports indicate that it will have a rather large cast. This is a Star Wars movie we're talking about, so expect every role — no matter what size — to be reported on like crazy. Stay tuned for more info as soon as it becomes available.
