CHAPPIE Gets the SHORT CIRCUIT Mashup It Deserves

chappie-gets-the-short-circuit-mashup-it-deserves

I don’t know if you’ve seen Neill Blomkamp’s Chappie yet or not, but I thought it was great. Yeah, not everyone likes it, and it’s getting mixed reviews, but I was completely entertained. While the film was being marketed, people were making a lot of comparisons to films such as RoboCop and Short Circuit. Well, Lance Ford went ahead and created a very funny mashup that wonderfully combines the audio from Chappie with visuals from Short Circuit. Check it out!

Exciting Possible Trailer Description for STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

I've come across a detailed description of what could be the next trailer we see for J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: The Force Awakens. There's no confirmation on whether this is the real deal of not, but it certainly sounds like it could be.

I found the description at Star Wars 7 News, and other sources such as Latino Review's El Mayimbe have also received the same description, but it doesn't mean that it's legit. So as of right now this is unconfirmed, but still worth the read if you're excited about the movie!

If you don't want to know what might happen in the upcoming trailer, then I suggest you don't read beyond this point:

The footage was a very rough cut of the new Star Wars trailer that JJ Abrams and Kathleen Kennedy will show off next month at Celebration. It’ll then probably be with Avengers. The trailer was just completed in the last couple weeks and it runs about a minute and a half. The music I’m told was all temporary using existing score from the previous Star Wars movies, but I understand that Williams composed a new piece last November that’ll be used in the final trailer.
The first portion of it is rather slow:
Like the first teaser it opens with a shot of the desert planet. Although it’s not dunes. It’s a destroyed AT-AT on its side.
Voice over (sounds like Lupita Nyong’o): “I shall show you the story…”
Forest location with a very large structure (like a castle or something) with an opening in the base of a large tree. I believe this is the Puzzlewood location.
VO continues “of who you seek…”
A large city in a tropical location. Looks like it’s on the water.
VO continues “the one who taught me…”
Cloaked figure (maybe Luke?) standing at the top of stone steps on a high green hill with mountain stones behind him. This is definitely Skellig Michael.
VO continues “I know why the weapon came to you.”
John Boyega (Finn), Daisy Ridley (Rey), and a small blue alien with a CG face in a dark (underground?) cave. Finn takes a lightsaber, and turns it on revealing a green blade. Rey is in the background and looks disturbed.
Things pick up from here. Lots of quick shots.
Han Solo wearing a brown duster and looking past the camera.
A black TIE Fighter attacking the forest location we saw earlier.
Kylo Ren in a POV shot approaching someone on the ground. His mask is dark with silver accents. The cross-guard saber is ignited.
People running in the city seen earlier in the trailer.
R2-D2 making a forlorn beep.
C-3PO and Princess Leia in what looks like a base command center.
New Voice Over (sounds like Andy Serkis from the first trailer) “Don’t get too sentimental”.
As that VO is playing we see Han looking at Leia and then walking away from her towards the Falcon with Chewie.
The snowy forest from the first trailer. Slow shot of Finn holding the saber, looks like he’s protecting Rey from someone as we hear Han say “You can do this kid, I believe in you.”
Final shot of the trailer is a close-up of a hooded head looking up to reveal Luke.

If this is real, I can't wait to actually watch it play out on the big screen! Do you think it could be legit?

Disturbing 50 SHADES OF TOY STORY Mashup Trailer

The innocent children's film Toy Story has been violated with this disturbing and amusing mashup that combines the visuals of the Toy Story films with the audio from 50 Shades of Grey. The video is called "50 Shades of Toy Story." In the trailer, Buzz takes the place of Christian, and Jesse is Anastasia. It was cut together by FAF Mag, and I don't think I will ever watch Toy Story the same way again.

Jared Hess Hired to Direct Disney’s OVERNIGHT AT 42nd STREET

0

Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre director Jared Hess has signed on to direct an upcoming family film project at Disney called Overnight at 42nd Street.

The film is being described as a Home Alone type story that is set in a toy store. The movie follows “a father and son who are given the opportunity to spend the night in a lavish toy store.” I don't know about you, but the coolest toy store I've ever been too was the Toys R Us in New York City.

I wish I knew a little bit more about the story, but I assume something crazy is going to happen, and the two characters will find themselves in the middle of some kind of wacky adventure.

Will Ferrell was originally supposed to star as the father, but he’s no longer a part of it. The studio and director are currently on the hunt for the father and son duo.

Hess has been consistently making fun films in his career, and his projects have appealed to both kids and adults, so developing a story like this for the big screen seems like a good fit for him.

His most recent film was Don Verdean, which starred Sam Rockwell and Amy Ryan. It premiered at the Sundance earlier this year. He’s currently in post-production on the a heist comedy called Masterminds with Kristen Wiig, Owen Wilson, Zach Galifianakis, and Jason Sudeikis.

New AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON Trailer Recut with Spider-Man!

new-avengers-age-of-ultron-trailer-recut-with-spider-man

Yesterday we showed you a little gif that gave us a look at what the Avengers would look like with Spider-Man swinging into battle with them. The latest trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron has now been recut to include Spider-Man by mixing in footage from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and it turned out pretty damn awesome! This is the closest thing we'll get to seeing Spider-Man fighting alongside the Avengers. That is, until Captain America: Civil War comes out! This fan-made trailer gets me even more excited for what's to come in the MCU. Thanks to IGN for the trailer!

Sarah Michelle Gellar Joins STAR WARS REBELS

Lucasfilm and Disney XD have announced that Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Sarah Michelle Gellar has joined the voice cast of Star Wars Rebels. There’s no official word on who she’ll be playing, but we do have some rumored info from Star Wars Time. You can read the info at the very end because some people might consider it a spoiler.

Executive producer Dave Filoni said this in a statement:

“We’re thrilled to have Sarah Michelle Gellar on board for season two. She is a true ‘Star Wars Rebels’ fan and her passion undoubtedly comes through in the voice recording sessions.”

Gellar will join a voice cast that includes her husband Freddie Prinze Jr., Vanessa Marshall, Steve Blum, Tiya Sircar, Taylor Gray, and David Oyelowo.

Continuing the epic tradition of the legendary “Star Wars” saga, “Star Wars Rebels” unfolds between the events of Star Wars: Episodes III and IV and tells the story of the motley but clever crew of the starship Ghost who together face threatening new villains, encounter colorful adversaries and embark on thrilling adventures. In its second season, “Star Wars Rebels” will feature recurring appearances by fan-favorite characters including Darth Vader and Ahsoka Tano.

The incredible season finale of the series aired earlier this week, and Season 2 is set to debut later this year. Anyone attending Star Wars Celebration will get to see the premiere episode of Season 2 at the Anaheim event.

As for who Gellar will be playing, the site says she'll be "a new character based on Mara Jade named Aileen Zahn in honor of Timothy Zahn, Mara’s creator. She will be an Inquisitor but pretending to be a Rebel.”

Batman vs. Darth Vader Fight Now Has An Alternate Ending

0

Back in November, we posted a video from Bat in the Sun that featured a brawl between Batman and Darth Vader. Spoilers for that video, but in the battle of The Dark Knight and the Dark Lord of the Sith, Vader came out on top by snapping Batman's neck with a Force choke.

Now the same team has put together an alternate ending, and I don't want to spoil how it ends, but it's a little bit of a cheat. Still, it does show how Batman uses his cunning to get him out of sticky situations, so it definitely fits with the history of the character. And it does have a nice reference to one of Han Solo's most famous lines of dialogue, so that's cool. Who do you think would win in a fight between Vader and Batman? Check out the alternate ending of the video, and let us know below.

New TOMORROWLAND Poster is Here, Trailer Coming on Monday

0
0

For me, Brad Bird's Tomorrowland is one of 2015's big mysteries - and I'm sure that's exactly how the filmmakers want it. Bird teamed with Lost showrunner Damon Lindelof to write the screenplay, based on a mysterious box they found in the Disney archives labeled "1952." George Clooney and Britt Robertson are starring, and though we've already seen a teaser trailer (with full analysis) and a Super Bowl TV spot, we still don't really know THAT much about the movie. Which is great! I love this approach to marketing, and I'm always a fan of going into a film knowing as little as possible. You only get to have your first theatrical experience with a movie once, and I often prefer to be as surprised as possible during that experience.

Now Disney has released a new poster for the movie (above), as well as the news that this coming Monday, there will be a live Q&A with Bird and Lindelof followed by the exclusive world premiere of the trailer at 10:30am PT on Facebook at the following link: https://facebook.com/WaltDisneyStudios. We'll be sure to publish it on GeekTyrant when it goes up, and I'm hoping the trailer continues to not give too much away.

From Disney comes two-time Oscar® winner Brad Bird’s riveting, mystery adventure “Tomorrowland,” starring Academy Award® winner George Clooney. Bound by a shared destiny, former boy-genius Frank (Clooney), jaded by disillusionment, and Casey (Britt Robertson), a bright, optimistic teen bursting with scientific curiosity, embark on a danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space known only as “Tomorrowland.” What they must do there changes the world—and them—forever.
Featuring a screenplay by “Lost” writer and co-creator Damon Lindelof and Brad Bird, from a story by Lindelof & Bird & Jeff Jensen, “Tomorrowland” promises to take audiences on a thrill ride of nonstop adventures through new dimensions that have only been dreamed of.

What do you think about Tomorrowland so far? Looking forward to it? The film arrives in theaters on May 22nd, 2015.

DREDD Producer Explains What Needs to Happen to Make a Sequel

dredd-producer-explains-whats-needs-to-happen-to-make-a-sequel

Fans of Karl Urban's badass Dredd movie have been hoping to see a sequel made. It's not that the filmmakers don't want to do it, it's just there's so many things that have to happen on the financial side of things before it can become a reality. The producer of the film, Adi Shankar, who just released the R-rated Power/Rangers short, keeps being asked when a Dredd sequel will happen, so he decided to shoot a short video explaining what exactly needs to happen for Dredd 2 to become a reality. So, as Shanker put it in the video, "The guy who dresses up like The Crow is going to you a lesson in film finance."

The Decline of Original Movies — Infographic

0
0

While doing research for an as-yet unreleased editorial on remakes and sequels, I gathered up a lot of box office data. Parsing the data, I labeled movies that were remakes, sequels, adapted, and original content, and I noticed a steady decline in the overall number of original movies that were in the top 20 box office earners. But revenue of original movies has held steady, despite that drop in the number of films in the top 20.

There are more original movies being made than 30 years ago thanks to independent features. Sequels, adaptations, and remakes are huge box office earners and it's easy to see why: people already know what they are.

Once I had everything organized, I thought this would make a great infographic. Having everything color coordinated allows you to digest lots of data by simply glancing over it. Box Office Mojo's data only goes back to 1980, so that's as far back as I could go. The data sets/years are every two to three years. If people really like it, I might do one that's every year and not just a sample of 15.

I've made the infographic available as a poster/print on Redbubble, and pricing varies on the size and options. Finally, you can see the raw/ugly spreadsheet data (here) and share your own conclusions in the comments.

THE VATICAN TAPES Trailer: A Religious Horror Film From CRANK Co-Director

0

Mark Neveldine is best known as part of the writing and directing duo Neveldine/Taylor, the guys who brought us Crank, Crank 2: High Voltage, Gamer, and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. But Neveldine is making his personal directorial debut on The Vatican Tapes, a new religious horror film that stars Michael Pena and Djimon Hounsou.

Pena and Hounsou play priests who track Satan's movements as he inhabits one host after another, eventually stumbling into the body of Angela Holmes (Olivia Taylor Dudley). But since this movie very clearly falls square in the middle of the religious horror genre, their exorcism doesn't quite go as planned and all hell breaks loose. Take a look at the first trailer below, thanks to Yahoo! Movies.

This could go either way for me. Neveldine has certainly proven to be a kinetic filmmaker, and the movie is based on a story co-written by Fast & Furious writer/producer Chris Morgan, so we'll see how it turns out when it drops into theaters on May 22nd, 2015.

GeekTyrant Podcast: The Evolution of Movie Posters

Have you noticed how terrible most Hollywood studio movie posters are nowadays? In this week's episode of the show, Joey, Free, Ben, and Elijah discuss the (d)evolution of movie posters, talk about some of the reasons why they might be getting worse,  and lament the proliferation of the "floating head" syndrome that seems to be taking the industry by storm. They also offer a few suggestions on what regular consumers might be able to do to turn the tide back toward posters with some legitimate artistic value.

Listen in, and be sure to let us know what you think in the comments. We'd love to hear your thoughts on the state of the modern movie poster.

IRON MAN Villain Reportedly Cast in CBS's SUPERGIRL TV Show

0
0

ComicBook.com reports that Faran Tahir, best known for playing the villainous terrorist Raza in Jon Favreau's Iron Man, has joined the cast of CBS's Supergirl TV series. The source claims that he has a guest spot in the pilot, but the role could end up being recurring if the show decides to move in that direction.

Tahir is reportedly playing a character known as The Commander, an alien who is a military expert "leading the forces aligned against Supergirl." From the outside looking in, it seems like this pilot is cramming an awful lot into a single episode. Mysterious alien military experts, an appearance by Superman himself...is this going to be too much for the generally older CBS crowd to handle? Time will tell, but the show has already been given a full series order for the first season, so even if the pilot is a disaster (like that Wonder Woman pilot a few years ago), we'll still be seeing Kara Zor-El battle the forces of evil on a major television network.

Tahir was solid in Iron Man (and he's been in dozens of other things, from Elysium to 24 and much more), so he's a strong addition to the cast either way.

25 Fun Facts About WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY

0
0
willy-wonka-behind-scenes-1

My youngest daughter has been on a Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory fix this last week. She's always asking to to watch it, which is fine by me because I love this movie! This is one of those classic films I don't think I'll ever get tired of watching. As I was watching it with her earlier this week, I realized that I haven't done one of my Fun Facts lists for it yet, so here it is! This is actually the longest Fun Facts list that I've done so far, as it feature 25 bits of trivia. There's a lot of interesting stuff here that I never even knew. Look it over and if you have anything to add, let me know!

  • When the kids enter the Chocolate Room for the first time, and they see the candy gardens, their reactions are real, it was the first time that they saw that part of the set. They also didn’t know that Gene Wilder would emerge from the factory with a limp.
  • The chocolate river was actually made of real chocolate, water, and cream. It spoiled fairly quickly and left a terrible smell.
  • Wilder said he would make the film under one condition: He wanted to do a somersault in the scene when he first meets the children. When asked why, the actor said that having Willy Wonka start out limping and end up somersaulting would set the tone for that character. He wanted to portray him as someone whose actions were completely unpredictable. His request was granted.
  • The Wonkatania boat was on a track in the chocolate river, but the actor playing the Oompa Loompa at the helm thought he was really steering it. For the sake of believability, director Mel Stuart didn't tell him the truth.
  • The actor who played Grandpa George, Ernst Ziegler, was nearly blinded from poison gas in World War I. So he was instructed to look for a red light to guide him when his character was meant to be looking in a certain direction.
  • Julie Dawn Cole (Veruca Salt) smashed a watermelon-sized chocolate egg on a rock in the chocolate room that she didn’t know was real. She badly cut her left knee falling onto it, and if you watch carefully in her first scene with the egg you can see that her left stocking is bloody. She still has a scar on her knee from the injury.
  • Denise Nickerson (Violet Beauregarde) didn't want to do the nose-picking bit. She had a crush on Peter Ostrum (Charlie Bucket) and didn't want to embarrass herself.
  • During the boat ride scene, Wilder's acting was so convincing that it frightened some of the actors, including Nickerson. Apparently they thought that Wilder really was going mad from being in the tunnel. That is one of my favorite scenes in the movie.
  • This movie was shot in Munich, Germany, but the producers had to go outside of Germany to recruit enough little people to play the Oompa Loompas. Many of the people cast as Oompa Loompas (German or otherwise) did not speak English fluently, if at all. This is why some appear to not know the words to songs during the musical numbers.
  • Sammy Davis Jr. wanted to play Bill, the candy store owner, but Stuart didn't like the idea because he felt that the presence of a big star in the candy store scene would break the reality. Nevertheless, the candy store song, "The Candy Man," became a staple of Davis' stage show for many years.
  • In the "Candy Man" scene in the candy store, shortly after Bill dispenses the sodas from the soda fountain, he flips open a pass-through on the counter and it hits a little girl under the chin, knocking her head back.
  • The foam used to spurt out in the "Wonka Wash" scene was made from basic fire extinguishers. But the foam was a potent skin irritant, so after shooting the scene, the actors were left in considerable discomfort when their skin puffed up and reportedly required several days to receive medical treatment and recovery.
  • The song Wonka sings on the boat ride ("There's no earthly way of knowing... ") are the only song lyrics taken directly from Roald Dahl's book. All other songs were written specifically for the film.
  • Peter Ostrum, the actor who plays Charlie Bucket, made no other films. He became a veterinarian. Julie Dawn Cole is the only one from the Wonka kids who is still acting.
  • Mike Teavee's father's line, "Not 'till you're twelve, son" took over forty takes to film. Why? I don't know!
  • The picture held up by the Paraguayan newscaster announcing the finder of the last Golden Ticket is of Nazi henchman Martin Bormann.
  • Before entering the Inventing Room, Willy Wonka gives an introductory speech in German, with an accent, but otherwise phonetically and grammatically correct. It goes "Meine Herrschaften, schenken Sie mir Ihre Aufmerksamkeit. Sie kommen jetzt in den interessantesten und gleichzeitig geheimsten Raum meiner Fabrik. Meine Damen und Herren: der 'Inventing Room'". He even pronounces the German R correctly, and says 'Inventing Room' with a proper German accent. The speech translates: "Ladies and gentlemen, please give me your attention. You now come into the most interesting room of my factory, the most secret room at the same time. Ladies and gentlemen: the 'Inventing Room'."
  • The film was originally financed by the Quaker Oats Company. They wanted to tie the film to a new candy bar they were going to release, so the movie was renamed from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory in order to promote this candy tie-in. When the film was released, the company began marketing its Wonka chocolate bars, but unfortunately, an error in the chocolate formula caused the bars to melt too easily, even while on the shelf, and so they were taken off the market. Nestle now owns the Wonka Candy Company.
  • Most of the chocolate bars in the film were actually made of wood.
  • All six members of Monty Python: Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin, expressed interest in playing the lead role, but they were deemed not big enough names for an international audience.
  • The Boeing 707 shown in the film having Wonka Bars unloaded, named "Jet Clipper Climax," was destroyed in a crash in Bali, Indonesia in 1974 with 107 lives lost.
  • Director Mel Stuart initially wanted to reveal that Willy Wonka had strategically placed the golden tickets in order to give the factory to Charlie. The idea was dropped, but the hints remained in the fact that Mr. Wilkinson (aka "Slugworth") conveniently showed up every time a ticket was uncovered.
  • When Peter Ostrum was offered the part, there was no script. So the studio sent him the book.
  • Several days after filming, the blue make-up on Denise Nickerson's face started resurfacing from her pores while she was in math class.
  • In Wonka's office at the end of the movie, Charlie's stunned reaction to the candy maker yelling at him is real. Ostrum was not told beforehand that Willy would be yelling at Charlie. Stuart felt that doing it that way would allow for a better, more real, reaction from Charlie. Wilder said that he wanted more than anything to warn Peter about the yelling beforehand because they had become such good friends during the production, and he wanted Ostrum to be assured that he was only acting, but Stuart forbade it.

Here's the original trailer:

Jada Pinkett Smith Will Not Be Back for GOTHAM Season 2

jada-pinkett-smith-will-not-be-back-for-gotham-season-2-social.jpg

I've really come to enjoy Jada Pinkett Smith's villainous role as Fish Mooney in Gotham, especially in these last couple of episodes. Her story is really getting interesting! Unfortunately is looks like that story won't continue in Season 2.

When the actress appeared on Live With Kelly and Michael, she was asked directly about her future with the Bruno Heller-created series, and this was her surprising response:

"I don't think so, no. I signed for a year and the year is up. But there are some great things coming ahead on Gotham, believe you me. There's a lot of good stuff coming."

There's no word on what is going to happen to her character. Will she sail off into the sunset on this boat of insanity run by the Dollmaker? Or will the character meet her demise? I hope that her departure wasn't a shock to the series creators. I'd like to at least get some closure on the character before she just kind of disappears. I will assume that whatever happens to her was planned from the beginning, which is why they only signed her on for a year. She went on to tease that it might not be the last we see of her, though:

"She could show up anywhere, you never know!"

One thing we do know for sure is that the end of Season 1 will be the end of her story arc. What do you think is going to happen to Fish Mooney?

Vanity Fair is hosting a Game of Thrones "Quick Draw" series, and they’ve teamed up with 1A4 Studio to make help them out with it. The first video follows the life of Ned Stark (Sean Bean) in the HBO series, and condenses his life into a one-minute animated speedrun. (Spoilers for Game of Thrones ahead!)

The first installment of this new series follows Ned Stark from his earliest moments on-screen to his untimely end at the close of Season 1. Come for the cute, animated baby direwolves, stay for the Cersei double-cross. Ned Stark may be long gone, but he’ll never be forgotten.

Jared Leto's Joker Will Be "Cerebral and Comedic" in SUICIDE SQUAD

jared-letos-joker-will-be-cerebral-and-comedic-in-suicide-squad

Jared Leto has been showing off his bleached blonde hair in preparation for his role of the Joker in David Ayer's Suicide Squad. That hair is sure to be given a green overhaul when they actually start production.

Everyone is curious to see what he plans on doing with this character, and we have some new information from Hollywood Life that says the actor is confident that his Joker is going to be the best one yet.

“He wants to make the character completely his own. He knows that this role may be his most difficult ever, but he is confident that he will make his version of the Joker the best. This Joker will be more cerebral and comedic than what we have seen before, nobody should expect a copycat version. It’s going to be awesome!”

I think it great that he's going to do something completely different with the character. Heath Ledger's performance is going to be a tough act to follow, but Leto definitely has the talent to give fans something amazing. I don't think he's going to give us a complete reimagining of the character, but I think he'll give us a version that is going to turn some heads.

Infographic: Ten Classic Superhero Vehicles

The people at Cherished Number Plates have created an infographic of ten classic superhero vehicles throughout the years, and though it only barely meets the definition of an "infographic" - it barely features any information, and yes, there are some graphics - it still has some pretty cool looking renditions of some vehicles that you might not find on top ten lists of this same topic across the internet.

With things like Green Hornet's Black Beauty and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen leader Captain Nemo's Otto Mobile on the list, these are some less common superhero vehicles. You won't find any Batmobiles here, folks. Let us know what you think in the comments.

SUPERGIRL: First Photos of Melissa Benoist in Costume

The first photos of Glee and Whiplash star Melissa Benoist wearing her Supergirl costume have emerged from the upcoming CBS TV series, and the costume looks fairly traditional to me. I haven't read any Supergirl comics, so I'll be looking forward to diehard fans of the character weighing in with their own comments below, but I think this looks a lot better than the Wonder Woman costume from that failed pilot a couple of years ago.

It was designed by Colleen Atwood, the Oscar-winning costume designer who is familiar with superhero shows, having worked on both Arrow and The Flash. “In designing Supergirl, I wanted to embrace the past,” says Atwood, “but more importantly, thrust her into the street-style action hero of today.”

What do you think about the new costume?
