Former Superman Dean Cain & Supergirl Helen Slater Join CBS' SUPERGIRL

$

0

The CBS procedural Supergirl has just added a few ex-superheroes to its roster. TV Line reports that Dean Cain, who played Clark Kent/Superman on Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman from 1993 to 1997, and Helen Slater, who played Supergirl in the 1984 film of the same name, have joined the cast in unknown roles.

This casting follows in the footsteps of The CW's The Flash, which hired actors John Wesley Shipp and Amanda Pays from the 1990 Flash TV series, to join the cast of the new series. Fans seem to appreciate these bits of meta-casting, so it makes sense that Supergirl would try to incorporate some members of the Superman universe into their attempt to launch a new show. We know that the crime drama will star Melissa Benoist in the title role, Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen, Laura Benanti as Kara Zor-El's Kryptonian mother, and Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant, so who does that leave for Cain and Slater? Kara's adoptive parents, perhaps?

But since word just came out that Superman himself would appear in a small role in the series, wouldn't it be ridiculous (and kind of cool) if Cain was suiting up as the Big Blue Boy Scout once again?

top-5-games-within-games

Zoomin.TV Games has released another great video for you to watch, and it give us their list of Top 5 games within games. These are games that you can actually play in other video games.  I wasn't aware of any of the games within games that were put on this list, but it's pretty cool stuff. The creators of the video explain:

"Some developers are known to put other games as Easter eggs in their game. Playing a game inside another game? That's some inception shit right there. Get ready for our top 5 games hidden in other games!"

I also included a transcript of the video for those of you who are in a place that can’t watch it. You can also watch their 5 Good Reasons Why Movie Video Games Still Suck here in case you missed it, and check out the supercut we posted this morning of fake movies within real movies.

5. Plants vs Zombies in World of Warcraft

Blizzard Entertainment likes mobile developer Popcap so much that they put a version of Plants vs Zombies in World of Warcraft. You can play the popular tower defence game when you go to the Hillsbrad Foothills. And there are even Bejeweled and Peggle addons available to kill time inside the massive online game. How convenient!

4. Paddle War in Commander Keen 4

Back in the early nineties Commander Keen was where it was at. This awesome platformer was the PC's answer to Super Mario Brothers. And it even had an extra game called Paddle War you could select from the main menu. It looked like a horizontal version of Pong you played on your watch. Apple Watch ain't got shit on Commander Keen.

3. Dead Ops Arcade + Zork in Call of Duty Black Ops

When you booted up Call of Duty Black Ops you were probably mashing the start button to quickly get into a game. But did you know you could actually get up from the chair and use the CIA computer to play the text adventure Zork? And by typing DOA you unlock a cool twin stick shooter called Dead Ops Arcade. How's that for cool easter eggs in a series that's been accused of being predictable?!

2. Geometry Wars in Project Gotham Racing 2

When Bizarre Creations made the racing game Project Gotham Racing 2, they also added a small twin stick shooter called Geometry Wars. The game inside the game turned out to be SO popular, it spawned its own franchise. Geometry Wars has been one of the best selling Xbox Live Arcade titles in the early years of the Xbox 360 and the third game in the franchise has just been released!

1. Maniac Mansion in Day of the Tentacle

For the best game in a game feature, we like to refer to a classic. The Lucas Arts adventure game Day of the Tentacle allowed you to play Maniac Mansion on a computer resembling a Commodore 64. Yes, you could play the entire previous game, for free, within The Day of the Tentacle! Now that's what we call putting a game inside a game. We can't wait to see if it's also in the remastered version that's supposed to come out later this year.

New Bruce Lee Biopic Being Planned

Bruce Lee is one of the most iconic martial artists that ever lived, and he had such a profound and positive effect on the world. I'm happy to report that there is another biopic being planned for the legend. According to Deadline, his daughter Shannon Lee has partnered with Last Vegas producer Lawrence Grey, Ben Everard, and veteran producer Janet Yang to develop what they call the "definitive biographical film on Lee."

In 1993, Universal Pictures made a biopic called Dragon, which is a film that I still enjoy watching to this day. Shannon explains that there is plenty of ground that has been left uncovered, and "voluminous writings by the man to fuel a new movie to enlighten a new generation to Lee’s trailblazing accomplishments and his evolution from a brawling student to a teacher of sophisticated philosophies and his own martial art form." She went on to say:

“There have been projects out there involving my father, but they’ve lacked a complete understanding of his philosophies and artistry. They haven’t captured the essence of his beliefs in martial arts or storytelling. The only way to get audiences to understand the depth and uniqueness of my father is to generate our own material and find amazing like-minded partners to work with…many don’t know that Bruce Lee was also a prolific writer and a creator of his own unique art and philosophy. That’s what we want to show, not just his kick-ass physicality, but the depth of his character and beliefs.”

They are going to go after the best talent to develop this film. Grey said, “We will bring on a world class filmmaker and writer, who’ll work with Shannon and myself and then we will talk to American and foreign partners."

Lee talked about the focus on the movie, revealing that it will center on the "intellectual approach that Lee brought to overcoming obstacles, and forming his own martial arts style, Jeet Kune Do. Those obstacles ranged from being told not to teach the art to non-Asians, to the difficulties he had getting work onscreen despite his movie star looks and unparalleled skills."

As you know, Lee had a lot of failed attempts landing lead roles in Hollywood because he was Chinese. He did get his big break as the sidekick in Green Hornet, but after losing the lead role in Kung Fu to white actor David Carradine, he went to China to makes movies, and that's where his career really blew up. After The Big Boss and Fist of Fury became huge hits, he was able to make his epic film, Enter the Dragon. Shannon added:

“In hundreds of years, how many people created their own martial art, something he used to break tradition because he believed in humanity and that the world was one brotherhood. His approach to business an nutrition was revolutionary, mixing Eastern and Western philosophies. My father wrote thousands of pages of thoughts on his life. They based Dragon on a book my mom wrote in the 70s, but they didn’t work in partnership with us to create that film and it didn’t have the depth or essence of my father that it might have. There is a lot that hasn’t been told yet, and many lessons that deserve to live on.”

I'm excited that another Bruce Lee biopic is being made, and I can't wait to see how it turns out!

GeekTyrant Podcast: Joseph Kahn's POWER/RANGERS Fan Film

Earlier this week, director Joseph Kahn and producer Adi Shankar released an R-rated 14-minute short called Power/Rangers that reimagined the Power Rangers in a dark universe filled with sex, drugs, and intense violence. It starred Katee Sackhoff and James Van Der Beek, and it made quite a splash when it debuted online this past Tuesday. But Saban, the company that owns the Power Rangers brand and is producing their own live-action reboot of the franchise, pulled the video off both Vimeo and YouTube hours before we recorded this podcast episode yesterday.

Listen in as Joey, Elijah, and I discuss the short, whether it should have been pulled, and more, and let us know what you think in the comments below.

A big thanks to Nick Borrego who provided us with our new music.

RED SONJA Movie Back on Track, New Writer Hired

Brigitte Nielsen and Arnold Schwarzenegger starred in a Red Sonja movie back in 1985, but the She-Devil with a Sword hasn't appeared on the big screen since. A remake of Red Sonja has been kicking around since 2008, when Robert Rodriguez was going to produce a version starring Rose McGowan. That never happened, and Megan Fox was being considered as a replacement before Amber Heard moved into the lead role with director Simon West at the helm. That was in 2011, and we haven't heard anything about the movie since then.

Now THR reports that the film has received a breath of new life, as writer Christopher Cosmos has been hired to write a brand new script. No director is involved, and no actresses are attached at this point, so this project is a blank slate once again. Cosmos hasn't seen one of his scripts produced into a feature yet, so we have no idea whether he's a good pick for the writing job or not. But with the popularity of Game of Thrones continuing to rise, it seems like as good a time as any to bring a badass, sword-wielding female character back into the popular consciousness.

Until then, make sure to check out this impressive cosplay of Red Sonja.

ScreenJunkies and SMOSH have teamed up to produce a new video game honest trailer, and this one dives into the adventures of The Dark Knight in the 2009 game Batman: Arkham Asylum. This is actually the only game in the Arkham series that I've played (I know, I know - I'm way behind), but I had a great time with it a few years ago. I need to get a PS4 so I can play the new Arkham game that's coming out. But enough about me - check out this honest trailer and tell us if you agree.

You thought it would be easy to turn Batman into a cool video game. For 20 years, you were wrong. Now, revisit the 2009 sensation that made everyone say, "See!, now this is how you make a f!*$ng Batman game!"

New GAME OF THRONES Season 5 Clips & Poster

HBO has released two new clips from the upcoming fifth season of Game of Thrones, its smash hit fantasy series based on the books by author George R.R. Martin. Yesterday morning I finished reading the second book, A Clash of Kings, and now I've quickly moved on to A Storm of Swords in the hopes of knocking that out before the series returns this year (it seems unlikely, but I can dream!). The books are fantastic so far, and I'm really looking forward to seeing how the show adapts them in the upcoming seasons.

I also really love the brand new teaser poster (above), which sees Tyrion Lannister staring down one of Dany's dragons, although I sort of doubt that actual image will come to pass in this upcoming season of the show. I'm hoping there will be a big conflict like that eventually, but who knows? I guess we'll see what the showrunners have in store for us on April 12th at 9pm.

President Obama Talks About Leonard Nimoy's Death

Mirror Universe Obama Spock art by Steven Craig

The world lost an icon today. Star Trek actor Leonard Nimoy died at the age of 83, leaving a hole in the heart of the geek community. One of those geeks is apparently President Barack Obama, who penned a nice remembrance of Nimoy today (via Vulture). Regardless of everyone's personal politics, I think we can all agree that this is pretty cool.

"Long before being nerdy was cool, there was Leonard Nimoy. Leonard was a lifelong lover of the arts and humanities, a supporter of the sciences, generous with his talent and his time. And of course, Leonard was Spock. Cool, logical, big-eared and level-headed, the center of Star Trek’s optimistic, inclusive vision of humanity’s future.

I loved Spock.

In 2007, I had the chance to meet Leonard in person. It was only logical to greet him with the Vulcan salute, the universal sign for “Live long and prosper.” And after 83 years on this planet – and on his visits to many others – it’s clear Leonard Nimoy did just that. Michelle and I join his family, friends, and countless fans who miss him so dearly today."

Henry Cavill to Star in STRATTON For CON AIR Director

Between Christopher Nolan's Batman movies, Christian Bale did a bunch of interesting projects: Rescue Dawn, Harsh Times, The Prestige, 3:10 to Yumaand he won an Oscar for his work in The Fighter. Between Superman movies, Henry Cavill has Guy Ritchie's The Man From U.N.C.L.E. in the can and now he's lined up a starring role in Stratton for Con Air director Simon West.

Variety has the news, which explains that Stratton is an adaptation of "the first of a series of eight novels by Duncan Falconer following a Special Boat Service operative tracking down an international terrorist cell through Central Asia, mainland Europe and London." Sounds pretty generic to me, but I'll give Cavill the benefit of the doubt for now - it seems like this is a passion project for him. West has definitely directed his fair share of questionable movies, but I've enjoyed a couple of them (Con Air, The Expendables 2), so maybe he can infuse this with a sense of fun and make something that surprises us all.

Trailer for the Boxing Documentary CHAMPS

trailer-for-the-boxing-documentary-champs

We’ve got a great trailer for the boxing documentary Champs for you to check out, and it gives us a unique look at the business of boxing. I enjoy watching the sport of boxing, but even if you don’t, this still looks like a fascinating doc worth watching.

The doc includes interviews with boxers such as Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, and Bernard Hopkins along with other celebrities such as Mark Wahlberg, Denzel Washington, Ron Howard, Spike Lee, and 50 Cent who says the sport involves “some of the toughest mothers in the world” who are “letting guys who couldn’t make it take advantage of them.”

That should give you an idea of what this doc will entail. Here’s the synopsis:

Boxing, “the poor man’s sport,” has long given kids from America’s roughest neighborhoods an opportunity to escape violence with violence. But with success in the ring comes new fights for which there is no training: champions are made and broken in the blink of an eye, and young men thrust into the spotlight are often ill-equipped for the fame and fortune that accompany a title belt. Built around the stories of heavyweight legends Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield and Bernard Hopkins, CHAMPS balances these uncensored recollections with gorgeous reenactments, classic fight footage, and candid interviews with Mark Wahlberg, Denzel Washington, Ron Howard, Spike Lee, Mary J. Blige and 50 Cent. More than just a sports documentary, CHAMPS examines what it means to pursue the American Dream through boxing, painting a picture of a controversial and unregulated sport in a moment of crisis.

Champs will be released in theaters and on iTunes on March 13th.

The Walking Dead Season 5 finale is going to be so epic that AMC is giving it an extended 90-minute episode! They cable network also announced that the finale episode of the season will air on March 29th at 9pm. Here’s a vague description of what the episode will entail:

Daryl finds himself in trouble while out on the run. Meanwhile, in Alexandria, Rick and his group continue to feel like outsiders as danger lurks near the gates.

Of course Daryl is going to find himself in trouble, but with who, or what? As for the rest of the group after what they’ve been through…it makes sense they they aren’t going to feel comfortable in this new place they’ve been invited to. So much could go wrong for them, and knowing the kind of show this is, I’m sure it will.

Chris Hardwick's Talking Dead after-show will air at 10:30 p.m. EST. He will discuss the finale and bid farewell to fallen characters of the season.

JAKKS Pacific has unveiled the "RC Hulk Smash!" It’s everything any kid would want out of a Hulk toy. They get to control a giant destructive Hulk sitting on top of a Hummer and destroy things.

The RC Hulk can do wheelies, flips, and spins, but the real appeal of this thing is that it’s built to smash stuff. That’s what the giant arms are for. It even comes long with some sound effects including the Hulk yelling, ”HULK SMASH!"

This is the kind of toy that parents will hate to love.

Trailer for Found-Footage Horror Film THE RENDLESHAM UFO INCIDENT

$

I’ve got a trailer for a very interesting looking found footage horror movie for you to watch called The Rendlesham UFO Incident. The film was inspired by an actual UFO hotspot in England called Rendlesham Forset, which is basically the British equivalent of America’s Roswell.

The director of the film is Daniel Simpson, who is actually a long-time resident of Suffolk, which is where the forest is located. He's also described in a report by the Telegraph as "a Rendlesham Forest incident expert." Here’s the synopsis for the feature:

33 years after the infamous Rendlesham Forest UFO incident, three metal detector enthusiasts hunting for Saxon gold in the same region, capture incredible footage of UFO's whilst filming their expedition. As night falls and with their navigation equipment failing, they find themselves facing a terrifying encounter with an unforgiving alien presence.

The Telegraph also offers some information on the actual mysterious event that took place in the forest:

In the early hours of December 26, 1980, US military personnel (sections of the US Air Force were temporarily stationed at RAF bases in Woodbridge and Bentwaters) spotted strange lights above Rendlesham Forest.
One of these men, John Burroughs, accompanied by his supervisor and one other individual, went to investigate the blue, red, orange and white lights. In his subsequent witness statement, published in 1981, Burroughs explains: "As we went down the east-gate road and the road that leads into the forest, the lights were moving back and they appeared to stop in a bunch of trees ... Also, the woods lit up and you could hear the farm animals making a lot of noises, and there was a lot of movement in the woods. All three of us hit the ground and whatever it was started moving back towards the open field … We got up to a fence that separated the trees from the open field. You could see the lights down by a farmer's house. We climbed over the fence and started walking toward the red and blue lights and they just disappeared."

There have been several other incidents at the location since then, and I included a video of one of them below the trailer. It's definitely is a great setting for a film. I love this kind of stuff, so it’s definitely something I’ll be watching when it’s released.

There's another one that we have to look forward to, and it’s a foreign film coming from The Weinstein Company called EVA. “There are things in life you can't simply reverse with the click of a button.”

The Follower is a solid short horror film that uses social media as it’s main plot setting. It’s a very well-made and polished short, and it has a great slow-burn type of lead up to the ending. The sound was done really well also; that's one of the main aspects of the movie that popped. The movie is best experienced in a dark room while wearing headphones. Christian Wenger directed, wrote and edited the project. Make sure to check it out when you get a chance.

Photos of Young Michael Caine in KINGSMAN Deleted Scene

A couple of interesting photos have surfaced from a deleted scene in Matthew Vaughn’s badass film Kingsman: The Secret Service. I’ve seen the movie twice already, and both times have been freakin’ awesome! Jellyfish Pictures worked on some of the visual effects for the film, and the photos they released are from a deleted scene that features a younger version of Michael Caine.

“Jellyfish worked on the VFX for the movie including a complex sequence involving Michael Caine looking 40 years younger.”

The photo looks amazing, and I would have absolutely loved to see how this would have worked on the big screen. We’ve seen other movies try to de-age older actors, but there’s always something off about it. The images we see here look amazing, but I’d have to see it in motion to be able to judge how amazing it would actually be.

The scene would have taken place in the mid 1970s, and I’m not sure how it would have been incorporated into the story, which is probably why it was cut.

SHAFT Reboot Moving Forward at New Line

It has been 15 years since we’ve seen Shaft up on the big screen. The character was last played by Samuel L. Jackson in 2000, and before that he was played by Richard Roundtree in 1971.

The hardcore private detective is gearing up to make a comeback. New Line Cinema has acquired the rights to the property. There’s no word on who will play the badass smooth-talking character this time around, and there are also no plot details available yet.

There are ton of great actors out there right now that could easily take it on, though, and the report throws out the following suggestions: Anthony Mackie, Jamie Foxx, David Oyelowo, and Chadwick Boseman. All of which could be great.

Jackson played the nephew of the original John Shaft in John Singleton’s 2000 film, but it sounds like this new version of the character will start from scratch. Shaft is a great character, and I’ve enjoyed both of the films that have been made up to this point. It will be interesting to see how Hollywood handles it for a third time.

Hans Zimmer Discusses Superhero Themes for BATMAN V SUPERMAN

Fan Art by CAMW1N

Hans Zimmer has provided some wonderful musical score for superhero movies over the years, like Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy and Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. He’s currently working on Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, and when talking to MTV he spoke a little bit about what he plans on doing with the score of the film saying, “I’ve got a couple of ideas.”

When asked if he would be writing individual themes for all of the superheroes that will be appearing in the movie, he said:

“I’m trying, I’ll put it that way. We’re in early days. But yes, of course, ideally that’s what you want to do.”

The guy seems like he will be able to work with Warner Bros. as much as he wants on these superhero productions. When the subject comes up in the conversation he says:

“Look, the studio is going to hedge its bet, if I ruin this one…. And at the same time you have to remember I come from ten years of doing Batman, so it’s really important to me not to betray the work we did with Chris.”

To help get around that, Zimmer is collaborating with the musical artist Junkie XL for the score of Dawn of Justice. Zimmer will score the Superman music and Junkie XL will be scoring the Batman sections. The other heroes who will appear in the film include Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, and Jason Momoa as Aquaman. It will be interesting to see what all of their themes end up sounding like.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters on March 25, 2016.
