Bizarre Trailer for the Documentary SPEARHUNTER

bizarre-trailer-for-the-documentary-spearhunter

Here’s a trailer for a crazy looking documentary called Spearhunter, which introduces you to the weird and bizarre world of boar hunting with spears. I didn’t even know anything like this existed, but this doc follows a group of men in Alabama who hunt wild boar with spears. It seems to mostly center on one man who is the self-proclaimed greatest spear hunter ever, and he even created a museum dedicated to the art of spear hunting, and himself. The guy seems like quite the character, and he’s also a little frightening.

Deep in the wilds of rural Alabama, a spear-hunter proclaims himself the world’s greatest and erects a museum dedicated to his own obsession. In this atmospheric and darkly funny documentary, an offbeat cast of lovers, acolytes, and critics of the megalomaniacal spear-hunter remember his distinctive tactics both for killing and for leaving a legacy.

The film is set to premiere at SXSW.

Trailer for the Scientology Documentary GOING CLEAR

The Scientology documentary Going Clear was one of the most talked about films at this year's Sundance Film Festival. Mostly because anyone who wrote a review on it, ended up getting an email from the Scientologists with the following message:

“The above article concerning Going Clear, Alex Gibney’s film, was posted without contacting the Church for comment. As a result, your article reflects the film which is filled with bald faced lies. I ask that you include a statement from the Church in your article. There is another side to the story which has to be told. Do not be the mouthpiece for Alex Gibney’s propaganda.”

There was a longer statement that came along with that including phrases such as “free speech is not a free pass,” “the usual collection of obsessive, disgruntled former Church members,” and “documented history of making up lies about the Church for money.”

I didn’t get a chance to see the movie while I was there, but it’s supposed to give us an in-depth look at the inner workings of the Church of Scientology through interviews with ex-members. You can get a glimpse of what they have to say in the trailer below.

Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief premieres Sunday, March 29th at 8PM, only on HBO.

3 Interesting Facts about DIE HARD Video

Movie Blast has released a new video that points out three interesting facts about Bruce Willis’ classic action film Die Hard. Maybe you’ve heard these, maybe you haven’t. I wasn’t familiar with two of the three facts. The one that I did know was that Willis wore special rubber shoes made to look like bare feet when he was walking through broken glass.

Leonardo DiCaprio Will Play 24 Personalities in THE CROWDED ROOM

Leonardo DiCaprio really wants to win an Oscar, and he’s taking on a role that might just land him one. We know that a good deal of Oscar winners have won by playing crazy characters, and DiCaprio is taking on one of the craziest. He is set to star in a film called The Crowded Room, and it’s a project that he has been wanting to play for nearly 20 years. He will be playing a man named Billy Milligan, who was the first person to use multiple personality disorder as a defense in court. This man had over 24 different personalities living in his head.

The movie will be based on the 1981 non-fiction book by Daniel Keyes called The Minds of Billy Milligan. It chronicles the true events of Milligan's life, including his trial in the late 1970s in Ohio after being charged with robbery and raping three women on the Ohio State University campus.

Here’s a description from the book that gives us an interesting rundown of what this film will entail.

Out of control of his own actions, Billy Milligan was a man tormented by twenty-four distinct personalities battling for supremacy over his body — a battle that culminated when he awoke in jail, arrested for the kidnap and rape of three women. In a landmark trial, Billy was acquitted of his crimes by reason of insanity caused by multiple personality — the first such decision in history — bringing to public light the most remarkable and harrowing case of multiple personality ever recorded.
Twenty-four people live inside Billy Milligan.
Philip, a petty criminal; Kevin, who dealt drugs and masterminded a drugstore robbery; April whose only ambition was to kill Billy’s stepfather; Adalana, the shy, lonely, affection-starved lesbian who “used” Billy’s body in the rapes that led to his arrest; David, the eight-year-old “keeper of pain”; Arthur, the Englishman; Ragen, the “keeper of Rage” who possessed incredible strength; Allen, the con man; Tommy, the escape-artist, and all of the others, including men, women, several children, both boys and girls, and the Teacher, the only one who can put them all together. Each of these “people” play a distinct role in this often shocking true story.

The book is being adapted for the screen by screenwriters Jason Smilovic and Todd Katzberg. DiCaprio is also producing this movie through his Appian Way production company alongside Jennifer Davisson.

So do you think this is the movie that will finally lead to DiCaprio's Oscar win? This wouldn't be the first time DiCaprio played a mentally ill person. He most recently played one is Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island.

Square Enix has been kicking ass with their Play Arts Kai action figure line, and they’ve just announced a new one through Sideshow Collectibles. It's a Predator collectible action figure, and it's one of the best they’ve created so far. It has improved articulation, it’s slightly larger and more detailed than the previous figures they’ve released, and it also comes with a handful of accessories. This looks like a must own figure for any fan of Predator. Here are the details:

The result of a primitive culture paired with a supreme intellect, the Predator established itself as a new breed of invader from space. Now the original Predator makes its appearance in the PLAY ARTS KAI line-up. Its raw, organic details and the realistic metallic sheen on its armor are both captured in detail and bring out the contrasting primal as well as advanced technological characteristics of the Predator.
Sideshow Collectibles and Square Enix are proud to introduce the Predator Collectible Figure. Utilizing translucent parts in some areas and with an intense paintwork application, Square Enix has created the realistic wet look of a living creature. The Predator features movie-accurate weathering and tarnished details on the armor and weapons and includes a wide variety of accessories, from an interchangeable face piece and helmet to a human skull obtained by the Predator through its hunt.

The figure is currently available for pre-sale for $120.

Jason Momoa on AQUAMAN Photo and BATMAN V SUPERMAN Appearance

It was a big surprise to fans when Zack Snyder released the first image of Jason Momoa as Aquaman. In a recent interview with EW, Momoa talked about the photo and revealed that he didn’t know Snyder was going to release it until right before the director threw it up on the internet.

“That was a shocker for sure. It was supposed to be a surprise in 2016, so it definitely helps [The Red Road]. I’ve been holding that secret for a long time. Zack Snyder called me up and said, 'I’m posting this picture now.' He’s just a genius and I love him to death. He sent it over and we’re in the middle of the editing suite for the thing I’m doing right now, and we all freaked out, man. It was so amazing to see it come out.”

When he was asked if he has shot any action scenes in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice he said,

“No, we haven’t done too much on the action yet. You know, Justice League is still quite a ways away. But I’m looking forward to it. Henry’s a sweetheart, Ben is a badass, so I’m really looking forward to when we all shoot Justice League.”

He wouldn’t officially confirm that he is going to be in Batman v Superman, but he did discuss Aquaman’s mythology, and how it presents a lot of story opportunities.

“The whole mythology of Aquaman is pretty amazing. There’s so many things to tell, and there’s a whole backstory that’s just amazing. There’s a lot of surprises coming. I think, yeah, he’s been cast aside. But, um [laughs] times are going to change now, buddy.”

I know he hasn’t confirmed that he will be in Batman v Superman, but the fact that Snyder released the photo is confirmation enough for me. As to whether or not the underwater scene from Man of Steel was an Aquaman tease, he said,

“Well, you know, I think that’s left for the genius of Snyder to kind of reveal that. There’s definitely a plan in this whole universe that he’s designing, and it’s amazing to be a part of it. I think everything that you see that is building, there’s a purpose behind the whole plan. So I wouldn’t want to take anything away from Zack, because he loves revealing all those things. And… you never know, man.”

Adam Savage Constructs a Model of THE SHINING's Overlook Hotel Maze

Mythbuster's Adam Savage has released a half-hour long video that shows him constructing a replica of the classic Overlook Hotel hedge maze from Stanley Kubrick's classic horror film, The Shining. Savage seems to really enjoy crafting replicas and movie props like this. He previously built Barbarella's Space Rifle and this amazing Alien space suit cosplay

The maze project was prompted by Savage's attendence at a Kubrick exhibit at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. There he discovered that the hedge maze architectural model on display was completely different from the one that we all saw in the movie, so he took it upon himself to create a movie accurate version of the maze.

What made the project interesting is that there are several different versions of the maze in film, each with varying degrees of detail. The movie shows us the "architectural model in the Colorado room; the façade you see during the day; the top-down map in front of the maze; the quarter-sized one for the movie's finale and another for a zoom-out shot in the Colorado room." None of these are the same. So Savage ended up using the map in the film for the basis of the model he built. That map gave him the best reference material.

Over the span of a month, Adam designed and built an accurate replica of the hedge maze architectural model from Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. The maze model, as seen in The Overlook Hotel, is only seen briefly, but reference screenshots from throughout the film allowed Adam to painstakingly recreate it. The project ended up as one of Adam's more labor-intensive builds in recent memory!

It turned out to be pretty awesome! Check out the video.

Like most Star Wars: The Force Awakens rumors, consider this a possible SPOILER. Making Star Wars has posted some more news, and this time it involves a flashback scene that will feature a major character from the original trilogy as a younger man. An actor named Robert Boulter was cast in the film, and the guy bears an uncanny resemblance to a younger Mark Hamill. Apparently, this actor is going to play a young Luke Skywalker in the film.

We don’t know for sure if this is official, but rumor has it that a young Luke Skywalker is listed on the film's master character list. As for what the flashback scene will entail, apparently it will be a small but pivotal part of the story. The following information gives us a few hints at what happens to Luke after Return of the Jedi, and it sets up the context for The Force Awakens.

The site lists the following rundown of the scene that I posted below:

  • Interior Day Roses’s Pub – There is a secret underground chamber and Rose begins her tale to Han, Rey, and Finn. They hold hands.
  • Flashback: Interior Night at Academy – Dead bodies are on the ground. Luke turns up.
  • Flashback: Exterior Dusk at the Afkcademy – It is noted it is peaceful now. Artoo-Detoo is saddened as his master departs.
  • Flashback: Exterior Day at the Savannah – A hand that takes the sword at the start of the film is revealed to be Naka’s hand.
  • Flashback: Exterior on the Savannah – A peasant’s hovel where the peasant drops the sword, starts a fire, panics and then returns.
  • Flashback: Exterior Desert – Local trader is seen leaving. (I believe it then cuts to Finn and Rey’s faces as the story unfolds).
  • Flashback: Exterior Day Desert – Local trader makes a sale to a wealthy man.
  • Flashback: Exterior Night Battlefield – Fierce battle! Sword is being use by the CLAN against THE SEVEN.
  • Flashback: Exterior Night: the last man is down and Kylo Renn approaches Rey!
  • Flashback: THE SEVEN are looting and we see Rose in the foreground taking “the object.”
  • Interior Day Roses’s Pub: In the underground chamber, Rose presents the saber and Rey is revolted by it while Finn is attracted to it.
  • Interior Day Roses’s Pub: Rey moves past aliens in an uproar as she leaves the establishment.
  • Interior Day Roses’s Pub: Courtyard: Rey runs away from the castle.
  • Exterior Day: Woods near Roses’s pub Rey runs into the woods.
  • Interior Day Roses’s Pub: Rose now knows why the saber “came to her.”
  • Exterior Day: Woods near Roses’s pub BB-8 finds Rey but suddenly the villains are overhead.
  • Interior Day Roses’s Pub: In the corridors undernearth the pub they notice Rey and BB-8 are missing as massive shaking begins.
  • Exterior Roses’ Pub Plate Shot: From Rey’s point of view we see the destruction of the Castle.
  • Exterior Day Rose’s Pub – From Rey’s Point of view we see Rose’s pub is chaotic.
  • Exterior Day Woods Near Rose’s Pub – From Rey’s perspective we see Rose’s Pub ruined. Kylo Ren arrives with Stormtroopers in tow.
  • Note: This pertains: “Interior Day: Roses’ Pub hallways beneath the pub, Rose “users her special skills” to defeat Stormtroopers.

It's narrated by Martin Scorsese, and I don't know about you, but it makes me want to go out and conquer everything that I've always wanted to accomplish. The commercial is advertising the iPad Air 2, and here's the caption that came along with it:

iPad is the ultimate tool for independent filmmakers. It lets them chase their ambitions and dive deeper into the work they’re so passionate about. Learn how students at Los Angeles County High School for the Arts relied on the power and versatility of iPad to write, produce, shoot, score, and edit their films in a matter of days.

Here are a few photos from a photoshoot featuring Sharon Rose and Kayley Marie cosplaying Captain America and Thor, respectively. Some of the photos show them getting ready to fight each other. The costumes are awesomely impressive. As you'll see a lot of work and detail that went into creating them. The photos were taken by Adrian Gibbs. As much as I love Captain America, the hero just wouldn't stand a chance against Thor, but it sure makes for a great fight!

Michael Biehn Says "Yes" to New ALIEN Film and It Won't Undo Last Two Films

I was extremely happy to see that Corporal Hicks was included in the concept art for Neill Blomkamp's new Alien film. This is one character that I've always wanted to see come back in the franchise, and I was devastated when he was killed off in Alien 3.

michael-biehn-says-yes-to-new-alien-film-and-it-wont-undo-last-two-alien-films1

Michael Biehn attended Pensacola Comic Con this last weekend, and while there he was asked about his potential involvement in the new film. The news comes from a Reddit user who apparently asked the actor two quick questions about his future with the franchise. According to the source, when he asked Biehn if he had been contacted about the new Alien film installment he "smiled and said, 'Yes.'" He was then asked if he would be game to do it, and he reportedly said, "Looks like it!" I really hope this is true, because seeing Biehn back in the role as Hicks would be amazing!

The director also recently talked about the film and explained that it would take place after James Cameron's Aliens, and that it would give fans a "proper ending" to Ripley's character. He made it sound like the movie would pretend like the events of Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection never happened, but that might not be the case after all. Blomkamp seemed to clarify his comments in this statement he made to AlloCine:

“I’m not trying to undo ‘Alien 3′ or ‘Alien Resurrection,'… My favorites are the first two movies. I want to make a film that’s connected to ‘Alien’ and ‘Aliens’. That’s my goal.”

So does that mean that the two crappy Alien movies will still exist in the universe? Whatever the case is, it sounds like he's definitely going to ignore them, but not undo the stories they told. He makes it very clear, again, that his film will only be connected to Alien and Aliens. I'm really curious to see what exactly he's planning, and how he's going to pull this off. We talked about this stuff in last week's GeekTyrant Podcast episode. We've got a long way to go before we get any official details on the film project, but I'm excited that it coming.

Fox's Animation Domination has released this funny animated short that shows us what the world would be like with a Superman who had obsessive-compulsive disorder. Turns out he wouldn't really be a very effective superhero.

What if The Man of Steel had OCD? Thanks to DC's Multiversity, we get to see every version of Clark Kent!

The short was directed by Kalen Whitfield and written by Eric Moneypenny. Are there any superheroes that have been created who do have OCD?

New Red-Band Trailer For Will Ferrell & Kevin Hart's GET HARD

Warner Bros. has released a new red-band trailer for the upcoming Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart comedy Get Hard, and this is one of the filthiest trailers I've seen in a long time. I'd seen all of the previous trailers, but this one takes things to an entirely different level; if you're looking forward to seeing this movie, I'd actually recommend that you DON'T watch this, because I'm guessing a lot of the best jokes are on display here.

I think comedies, more than any other genre, are in the most danger of being ruined by the marketing because part of the reason jokes work so well is that they're surprising in context of the film. I understand that studios have to market these movies and show us some funny stuff to get us to want to buy a ticket, but they may have gone above and beyond with this one. Here's hoping there will be plenty more hilarity in the actual film, which debuts on March 27th.

Animezing Series: HUNTER X HUNTER (2011)

$
0
0

Long anime can be taxing to watch, and I feel there’s nothing worse than committing yourself to countless hours of a series not knowing if the time you’re committing will pay off in the end. For this reason, I was wary when I jumped into Hunter X Hunter. While it appears within the top 20 of great anime, it’s often overlooked or ignored when discussions about “the best of the best” come into play. I can understand why, as I can see the show may not appeal to everyone, and at 56 hours total for the series, you’re going to want to decide if it’s for you before jumping in.

Let me save some of you a long read and just say right now I loved it, but not right off the bat.

Gon Frecess (the hero of the story) was not initially all that likable to me. At his base, he’s the archetypal bonehead with a big heart who has extraordinary potential. The only difference between Gon and someone like Ash Ketchum is he actually wants to find his dick of a father. At the beginning of the series, this certainly rings true, but this cliche is quickly quashed by the supporting characters he meets along the way. Gon is surrounded by a cast of unique individuals who carry the story or flat out steal the show when he may fall a bit short.

While many of these characters (much to your dismay) will come and go with little or no mention later, Killua remains a constant companion to Gon throughout the series. At its core, this show is about the friendship and adventures these two boys share, and it’s essentially why I believe this show maintains its position near the top of anime lists. The bromance between these two reminded me of some of my best friends and really captures the bond two great friends share. You won’t really see this start to unfold until about episode 20, but the hunter exam arc will keep you drawn in while you wait.

Speaking of which, this series has some crazy arcs that shake up the dynamic and keep things from getting stagnant. We're talking underground auctions with mob bosses to a video game kind of jump, but in no way does it ever feel forced or like it doesn’t belong in the story. The longest of these arcs is near the end and nearly 50 episodes long. Although it takes up the final third of the series, the “Chimera Ant” saga features some of the greatest action you’ll see in the series and features some of the greatest episodes to be sure.

I also enjoy the strength disparity between the main characters and people they meet. Suffice it to say Gon and Killua aren’t the strongest fighters in this world, nor will they ever be. In fact, there are quite a few minor characters who hold strength levels that dwarf many of the main heroes. It gives a sense of vulnerability to the heroes when you know they may not always succeed and kept me from yawning every time Gon entered a battle “he couldn’t win.”

Where does the series fall short? Mind you, overall I loved the series and thought it was worth the time, but as I’ve been connected with it for a literal two days of my life, I have three qualms that lingered after the final episode…

  • The introduction and drop off of characters- You’ll meet a ton of awesome characters throughout the series. Some will be around several episodes, some you’ll see twice and never again. The saddening part is the show really works to get you to feel for some characters and then completely stiffs you on checking in with them on the series end. This is especially true for one character, and if you watch, you’ll know who.
  • DBZ lifts- Yeah this isn’t the first anime to pull from one of the most successful anime of all time, and when you do a fighting-based show rooted in inner strength, it’s hard not to draw some inspiration. Shonen Jump is Shonen Jump after all, and they go with what works. That being said, there are two enemies you’ll meet in this series and be able to say which DBZ villain they are meant to emulate beyond a shadow of a doubt.
  • The ending was good, but it left me wanting more. Coming out of the longest arc in the series and then wrapping things up in 12 episodes was not nearly enough for me. This makes sense, though, as I read the manga has yet another story arc beyond where the anime ends. They heavily hint at this in the final episode, but there is much doubt among fans the final story arc (WHICH SEEMS TO BE THE COOLEST) will be animated.

Those things aside, this was a damn good series that I in no way regret watching. If you were someone who finished the series five months ago I’m sure you’ll agree, and if you’re a fan of action heavy anime with little throwaway episodes then this series is worth your time. The full series can be found on Crunchyroll and I’m sure other outlets as well. MAKE SURE YOU WATCH THE REBOOT AND NOT THE 99 VERSION (although, it’s not too bad either).

Holy S&M, Batman! Watch FIFTY SHADES OF WAYNE Parody

Following in the footsteps of Steve Buscemi and Gandalf the Grey, it seems that Bruce Wayne is jumping on the S&M bandwagon. With Fifty Shades of Grey still fresh in our minds and two sequels on the way, it's not too surprising that parody videos are popping up left and right that poke fun at the movie. (Fifty Shades was, after all, based on a book that began as Twilight fan fiction.)

This parody from Josh Meeter may not be as purely funny as the Gandalf one, but it's fascinating because it uses Christian Bale's take on Wayne - it's funny, considering how Christopher Nolan's trilogy was so sexless. What do you think?

Fans have been wanting to see a feature film adaptation of Disney's Gargoyles for years. It's the best animated series they've ever created, and it's kind of shocking that they haven't made this movie a reality yet. It seems like a no-brainier of a decision.

I attended the Long Beach Comic Expo this weekend, and while there I had the opportunity to attend the 20th Anniversary Gargoyles panel. Creator Greg Weisman was there along with producer and director Frank Paur, Keith David (the voice of Goliath), and several of the other voice cast members.

At one point during the Q&A, Weisman was asked by a fan what was currently going on with the prospects of a feature film and other forms of entertainment. After Weisman revealed that he is currently developing a comic book series for the franchise that has yet to be officially announced, he went on to give an update on the movie.

I'm reporting to say that Weisman is still trying to push forward. He explained that this is a project that he will never give up on, and that he will keep trying to make it happen. He's been trying to get a feature film version of Gargoyles into production for years, and over that time he says that there have been moments where Disney has been very interested in it, and then for some reason that interest would fade. It has just been an on and off again thing with the studio. The dance between Weisman and the studio has been going on like this the whole time.

The last meeting he had with the Disney about the project was last week. So it's good to know that there is currently active participation in trying to bring it to life. Who knows if anything will come of it though. He didn't really say how the meeting went. Everyone involved with the series would love to be a part of it as well. When talking to Keith David about it, he said he would do anything he could to help bring Gargoyles to the big screen.

I can't understand why Disney hasn't jumped on this property and put a film into development. It's the kind of movie that would be blow up at the box office, not just as a single film, but as a freakin' franchise! It still has a huge and loyal fan base, and on top of that there's a whole new generation of kids that would love it if they saw it.

We've seen a lot of classic animated cartoons get the big screen treatment over the year, and there are more to come, but out of all of them, I think Gargoyles is the most deserving. This movie needs to happen, and I truly hope that one day it will.

I've always been a huge supporter of this series, and I even wrote an article trying to get Disney to see the light. You can read that article here.
