Female Thor Reimagined by John Staub

Artist John Staub created this beautiful redesign of Marvel’s new Thor. The new comic seems to be doing well with the fans. The illustration came along with the following note from the artist:

“Been reading the new Thor comics. Did my take on the new wielder of the hammer.”

Turned out to be a pretty kick-ass character design. I wonder if Marvel will ever integrate this Thor into their cinematic universe. Do you think that's where they might take things?

George Lucas Discusses STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS and Experimental Films

0
0

George Lucas is out making the press rounds for his upcoming animated movie Strange Magic. In an interview with Screen Rant, the filmmaker talks about Star Wars: The Force Awakens and how he doesn’t know what the story is. As you know. he was developing Episode VII before Disney came on board, but it seems like J.J. Abrams may have changed a lot of what Lucas was initially planning.

“I haven’t seen anything; I mean I saw the trailer, it looks great, it looks interesting. But as I’ve said before: one thing I regret about Star Wars is that I never got to see it, you know? I never got to be blown away by the big ship coming over the thing, or anything. But this time I’m going to be, because I have no idea what they’re doing.”

It’s good to know that he has actually watched the trailer for the movie. When he was asked about that last month, he still had not seen it. In a separate interview with the LA Times, Lucas reveals that he currently writing two movies, which are described as being “experimental movies that hearken back to his student days at the University of Southern California.” They are also movies that we will never get to see.

“The way [the films] are, they’re not really movies that can be released. They’re movies more for myself and maybe I’ll show them to some of my friends. … It costs more to put them out there than it does to make ‘em. These are movies that are never going to make any money or anything. … They’re like things I did in school or movies I produced, like ‘Koyaanisqatsi,’ ‘Powaqqatsi,’ things like that. But it’s different because they’re dramatic films. It’s very hard to explain because it’s never been done yet.”

I’d love to see these movies that he is going to make! Lucas’ earlier films were amazing. The guy was insanely talented, and It'd be awesome to see him return to that kind of experimental creativity.

New Adaptation of Stephen King's IT Will Be Scary and Vicious

new-adaptation-of-stephen-kings-it-will-be-scary-and-vicious

Director Cary Fukunaga (True Detective) is preparing to shoot the first of a two part big screen adaptation of Stephen King's It. The plan is to start filming it this summer.
Seth Grahame-Smith, who is one of the producers of the film, talked about the adaptation in an interview with EW and said that they are moving pretty quickly into production and revealed a little more about what we can expect from the highly-anticipated horror movie.

It is my number one favorite story from King. It's just such a terrifying and horrific tale, and one of my favorite aspects of the story is that the nightmarish events revolve around a group of kids who are called the "losers club." The fact that these insane events involving a murderous clown named Pennywise are happening to kids intensifies that fear. The first part of the film will focus on the kids, and the second film will focus on the same characters reuniting as adults to fight the murderous monster of their past.

There was a great TV movie adaptation made in the 90s that I really enjoyed, but I couldn't be more excited to see what Fukunaga has in store for this new adaptation. In the interview, Grahame-Smith says the film will be scary and vicious, which is exactly what I was hoping for:

"I think that if anything, [the new film] will bring back some of the viciousness of the book that they couldn’t do with the miniseries because it was for broadcast. I think it’s going to be very scary, but I also feel like you’ve got Cary who is going to direct these kids—and he’s incredible at casting, incredible at shooting. He’s incredible with tone and atmosphere."

I love Fukunaga's work, especially what he did with True Detective. I have complete confidence in this guy to give us the greatest big screen adaptation of this story possible. If you've seen any of Fukunaga’s work, then you know he has a talent of creating an amazing atmosphere for the stories he tells.

With It being a feature film, they'll be able to get away with so much more craziness than they could do with the TV movie. The book is definitely an R-rated story, and I really hope that we get an R-rated film. They might as well go all out on this movie! Grahame-Smith then confirmed that Fukunaga plans to shoot the first of the two films this summer:

"We’re going to get a draft, what is supposed to be the shooting [script], any day now from Cary and his writing partner. We’re doing a deal for them to write the second movie. Our hope is to prep sometime in the next few months and shoot in the summer. That one is as much on the runway as we can possibly be. I know New Line is ready to go."

So we might actually get to see the first part of It in 2017. I can't wait!

I Got Addicted To HEARTHSTONE In 72 Hours And You Can Too!

0
0

There are so many factors that should have kept this from happening. I'm not one for "freemium" games, I've never so much as approached a game made by Blizzard in my lifetime, and if you asked me my opinion on "online card games" four days ago I would've said, "Meh." Despite all that I thought to be true about myself, I tried out Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft to finally see what all the hype was about.

Holy shit.

Now 72 hours later I've logged a crazy number of hours, have two custom decks, and a miserable win to loss record, but I love it. I ALSO WANT TO SPEND MONEY ON IT. For the record, I've never spent money on a "free" game. I never purchased poker chips on World Series of Poker on Xbox 360, I played with my one free character on Killer Instinct and promptly uninstalled, and I used the same basic account on Runescape for three years. This is a big step for me.

So what made me change the core of my being? Can a freemium game really be that good? Is it right for you? I'm here to answer all those questions the best I can, or until I feel the urge to login and do the daily challenge. Here's how you can get addicted to Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft and be okay with it!

It's Deceptively Easy To Learn

Like I mentioned earlier, Hearthstone is a card game. I've been told it plays similarly to Magic: The Gathering, but I've never played it so I can't confirm or deny. The basic rules go as follows.

  • Each player has 30 health and starts the game with one Mana. Mana is used to summon fighters, spells, and traps.
  • Your overall Mana increases by one every turn and the objective is to destroy your opponent through use of attack by monsters and spells.
  • Some monsters attack, some can be used defensively as a shield, some do both. MOST OF THE TIME, if you have a shielded character on the board, you cannot be directly attacked by your enemy.

That's the basic nuts and bolts of the game, and the tutorial does a great job of laying out the basics. It takes a few games to really start to see the ways you can manipulate cards and really do some damage. Your level of play will increase dramatically from game one to game ten, and that won't take long!

Quick To Play And Action Packed

I hate card games that drag on forever. Hearthstone takes about 10-15 minutes a game on average. I'd wager to say that I rarely have a game go beyond 12 turns before completion, and that's not at all a bad game. The right cards and moment can turn an opponent who's seemingly on the ropes and near death to a comeback kid in an instant.

It's a game that pushes big counters and epic moments constantly, and never really leaves you waiting for something to happen. Some may gripe about cards ruining the consistency of play, but more often than not we call that crowd "sore losers".

Try...And Try...And Try...Before You Buy

Let it be known here and now that you can play Hearthstone and never spend a cent with no penalty whatsoever. Every three wins nets you ten gold, and daily challenges award you varying amounts upon completion. Card packs can be purchased with 100 gold, or winners can enter the arena for 150 and walk out with more epic prizes.

Maybe you grind for hours only to receive a pack that has absolutely no valuable Mage cards. While that sucks, Blizzard remedies this by allowing you to break down cards from classes you don't use to make cards you need for your current class. You also...

  • Don't have a time penalty between games
  • Aren't prodded every five minutes reminding you that you can purchase things
  • Can play 72 hours and not spend a dime without getting bored

So If I Don't HAVE To Spend Money, Why Am I?

I spent absolutely nothing downloading this game. I played it constantly looking for that ceiling where I had to spend. It was refreshing when I realized I had the full game, and I could then purchase legitimate expansions or cards if I wanted to. That's an awesome feeling. That's a feeling that takes the "freemium" out of a free game in my eyes. This is what freemium needs to return to. That is why you need to check it out. So for real, all you guys should download it and hit me up on Battle.net under Micknasty.

New Photo of Sir Ian McKellen as Sherlock Holmes in MR. HOLMES

new-photo-of-sir-ian-mckellen-as-sherlock-holmes-in-mr-holmes

We've got a new photo of Sir Ian McKellen as an aging Sherlock Holmes in an upcoming new movie called Mr. Holmes. We've already seen one image of him, but this one is a still from the actual movie. The film is being directed by Bill Condon (Dreamgirls) and is based on the book A Slight Trick of the Mind

The book takes place in 1947 and follows a 93-year-old Holmes, who is "long retired to Sussex and his bees and frustrated by his diminishing power of recollection. He believes his bees' royal jelly is part of the secret of his longevity, and his further researches into the subject have recently taken him to post-war Japan. There he encounters the son of a former British diplomat who knew Holmes and disappeared at the start of the war. Holmes doesn't remember, but feels the familiar pull of an unfinished case."

Laura Linney also stars in the film and plays Holmes' housekeeper Mrs. Munro, who is the mother of the boy in the photo above. Doctor Watson is played by Colin Starkey, but apparently he's not in the film much. According to Empire, "Watson is only occasionally and fleetingly mentioned in the novel: long dead by the time of the main story and off with a wife in the flashback section."

This is seriously the perfect role for McKellen to take on, and I'm sure he gives a top-notch performance. Mr. Holmes is set to be released sometime this year, so we'll keep you posted on more information when we get it.

10 Most Anticipated Video Games of 2015 - Video Breakdown

10-most-anticipated-video-games-of-2015

2015 is the year that I am jumping back into the world of gaming! The last couple of years, I didn’t play as much as I would have liked because I put a lot of focus on TV and movies. This year I plan on being a lot more involved with the video game scene, which I’m really excited about - especially because it looks like we have a great year of gaming ahead of us!

Watch Mojo put together a video that gives us the ten most anticipated video games of the year. The ten games mentioned include the following:

10: Bloodborne

9: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

8: Dying Light

7: The Legend of Zelda Wii U (Tentative Title)

6: Mortal Kombat X

5: Uncharted 4: Thief’s End

4: Xenoblade Chronicles X

3: No Man’s Sky

2: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

1: Batman: Arkham Knight

Watch the video to see footage and an explanation of why they are on the list. Do you agree with the list? What are some of the games you're most excited for this year?

Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen Aren't in X-MEN: APOCALYPSE

0
0

Patrick Stewart recently offered up some news that might be pretty disappointing to some of you X-Men movie fans. The actor was recently on an episode of Larry King Now, and was asked if he would reprise his role as Professor X in Bryan Singer's upcoming film X-Men: Apocalypse. This was his reply:

"No, nor Sir Ian McKellen either. I was learning quite a lot more about [the film] last night, and it is going to be looking very much at the earlier lives of all our characters, and so I don’t think we’ll be making an appearance."

Since the movie is going to focus more on the 1980s years of Professor X and Magneto, it makes sense that these two actors wouldn't be involved. The only reason they appeared in the the last movie was because of the time travel element.

The film will involve ancient mutants and explore a deeper relationship between Magneto and Mystique. We know that James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult and Oscar Isaac will be in the film, and apparently Evan Peters will make an appearance as Quicksilver for at least one scene

The movie is set to be released on May 27th, 2016.

Honest Game Trailer for THE SIMS

Smosh Games' latest Honest Trailer takes on the popular time-waster video game The Sims. Look, if I'm ever going to live a life online, it's not going to be in a game like The Sims. It would be in a game like World of Warcraft. I'm just too busy living my real GeekTyrant life to be living a second life in the virtual world. I just don't get The Sims, there's no freakin' point to it! The video below hilariously points out how absurd this game actually is.  Even if you play it, you have to see how ridiculous it is...right?

You've Simmed a city, a tower, an earth, and an ant. Now, EA and Maxis let you simulate the least interesting subject yet - you! The Sims.

Fox is Considering Another Season of 24, But Without Kiefer Sutherland as Jack Bauer

0
0

I enjoyed watching 24 during the series' original run, but it got increasingly ridiculous as the seasons progressed (how do you top a nuclear bomb going off in Los Angeles?), and the Counter Terrorism Unit really should have stepped up their game when it came to conducting background checks on new employees because it seemed like there was a different mole in the organization every season. I was disappointed by last year's 24: Live Another Day, but it appears that Fox isn't completely finished with the show just yet.

At the Television Critics Association this past weekend, Fox CEO Dana Walden said that not only is the network considering bringing back 24 for another season (and possibly as soon as 2016), but that star Kiefer Sutherland might not appear as Jack Bauer. Wait, what now?

"We have discussed it with him. We talk to Kiefer all the time. He’s a great creative partner, potentially he won’t be in this installment. We’re not sure yet. We’re not that far along, but I know he supports us doing more 24."

24 without Jack Bauer just seems wrong to me. I suppose the 24 hour "real time" format doesn't necessarily have to follow that character, but it would definitely be a strange departure for the show to lose him. But then, Walden said something that was a little confusing:

"First of all, we’re not talking about continuing the show without him. We’re talking about whether there’s one installment that he’s not in. I think if the storytelling is exciting enough, that real-time element that the show really owns–so many of the production aspects are so unique to that show–I do [think we could do it without him]. I think [it could be] great characters with that creative team. I look at everyone that’s surrounded Kiefer in the last installment and I think it could work."
“Jack Bauer could come in very organically in the story, or [producers are] prepared to do something that would be the one installment without him.”

So they're NOT talking about continuing the show without him, but they ARE talking about making a season that doesn't feature that character? That sounds to me like they're 100% talking about continuing the show without him. From these comments, it seems as if the people at Fox are thinking that the show will go on for multiple new seasons, which is a pretty ballsy assumption to make in the current TV climate. Audiences are getting pickier about what they watch as more choices become available to them, and without Sutherland's star power to pull in the older crowd, it's going to be tough to convince people that 24 is a show worth sticking with if it takes one of the show's secondary characters and bumps them to the lead to replace Bauer.

For what it's worth, Sutherland told USA Today last year that he was done playing the character.

"My bones are creaking. What am I going to do, Jack Bauer in a walker? So, yeah, this is it. For me, it's done."

What do you guys think? Would you watch 24 without Jack Bauer?

Video: Learn the History of The Justice League and Why Batman Loves Anime

0
0

The guys at Comics Alliance have put together another "You Think You Know Comics" video, this time focusing on the origins of DC's greatest team of heroes, the Justice League. This should be pretty familiar stuff for those of you who have been reading comics for a long time, but for those who have become geeks thanks to the glut of superhero-related TV shows and films over the past few years, this is a good primer for how the team originally came together. (Chances are you won't be seeing this exact origin in Zack Snyder's upcoming movie.)

There was one big surprise, for me at least: the bit explaining how Batman loves anime. He's not the only one, either: we have a big guide for how to get back into anime in 2015 right here. Let us know what you think about the video below.

Vampires Attack in First Trailer for THE STRAIN Season 2

Guillermo del Toro's FX series The Strain started slowly, but finally seemed to embrace its insanity near the end of the first season. I haven't read the books the show is based on (which were written by del Toro and Chuck Hogan), but if this newly-released trailer for season two of the show is any indication, things start to get crazy really quickly. More craziness is exactly what this show needs, so here's hoping they fully commit to the ridiculousness of the premise, go all-out, and provide fans with some great "WTF" moments this year.

Details About February's GAME OF THRONES Season 5 Special

0
0

A few weeks ago, we told you that HBO is going to air a Game of Thrones special on February 8th, 2015. I speculated that the special would be similar to the one the network released last year, featuring interviews with the cast and brief glimpses into what we can expect with the upcoming season. But EW has some new details about the upcoming special, and it appears that those who are averse to spoilers (like myself) won't have much to worry about after all.

It’s a half-hour documentary that covers one day of season 5 production on three different Thrones sets in three different countries – Belfast, Northern Ireland; Dubrovnik, Croatia; Sevilla and Osuna, Spain. The special follow key crew members and promises to highlight “the epic sets, renowned cast and global scale of Thrones, as well as the more intimate and individual challenges of our subjects, giving the audience a new perspective on one of the most elaborate productions in television history.”

So unless they happen to be shooting a massive scene that spoils a huge plot point for the upcoming season, this seems more like it will just be a cool little behind-the-scenes look more in line with something you might see on the special features menu of a Blu-ray or DVD. Be sure to check out the awesome artwork that will be given away at the upcoming IMAX screenings of Game of Thrones, and circle April 12th on your calendars - that's when season 5 officially premieres.

Guys Pilot Remote-Controlled AVENGERS Helicarrier, Land RC Planes On It

The guys at FliteTest built a remote-controlled helicarrier based on the one featured in Joss Whedon's The Avengers. That's cool enough by itself, but they decided to take things a step further: while flying the helicarrier in an open field, they also try to fly other remote-controlled planes off of it and land it back on the floating carrier using video goggles, while mini-figs of Captain America, War Machine, and Iron Man look on. This looks like a ton of fun, and now I really wish I had my own RC ship to fly around. Check it out!

BEETLEJUICE 2 Could Start Shooting This Year

0
0
beatlejuice-2-may-start-shooting-this-year

According to screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith, not only is Beetlejuice 2 going to happen, it could start filming by the end of this year. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Smith was talking about his current busy schedule and the subject of Beetlejuice 2 came up. Here's what he had to say about the project:

"I’ve emailed with Michael Keaton. I know he’s excited about the idea. I know Tim [Burton] is excited about the idea..
"… deals are done, and we’re waiting in the wings ready to go right after Peregrine’s wraps up. The ideal timeline is we’re really getting into it toward the end of this year."

Peregrine’s is referring to Burton’s current project Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. Smith also has exciting casting information for the fans of the original movie. While talking about how scary it is to take on the sequel to a much-loved movie, Smith drops this little nugget of joy for us:

"One thing that will help though is, yes, Winona Ryder will be back as Lydia."

That's not new news, as Burton has announced that himself in a recent interview while making the press rounds for his Big Eyes movie. But it's cool that we'll actually get to see the further adventures of Beetlejuice and Lydia Deetz as soon as 2016.

I am, like most of you reading this, a huge fan of Beetlejuice. So, I was able to breathe a great sigh of relief knowing that both Burton and Keaton are on board with what Smith has come up with. I truly believe that Burton would not do anything that would jeopardize how fans see one of his most famous characters.

Marvel Developing Comic Sequel to GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Post-Credits Scene

marvel-developing-comic-sequel-to-guardians-of-the-galaxy-post-credits-scene

In case you've been wondering how Howard the Duck ended up in The Collector's collection in Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel is developing a comic book story that will explain exactly how that happened. The comic will be a sequel to the post-credit scene at the end of the film that featured Howard as one of The Collector's prized possessions.

Marvel announced that the Howard the Duck and Guardians of the Galaxy story will take place in Howard the Duck #2. We previously posted the cover art for the comic, which I've also included in this post. Here's the story description thanks to THR:

Howard’s first big case has taken him across the universe and landed him in the clutches of The Collector! But he’s not alone as the very popular Rocket Raccoon is a prisoner as well! Have you ever seen a comic book sequel to a post-credits scene in a movie? Well, you will now!

Sounds like more of a prequel than a sequel, but maybe there's a little bit of both in the full story. I love how the new Howard the Duck comic series in some way ties into the Marvel cinematic universe. The comic is to be written by Chip Zdarsky with art by Joe Quinones. It kicks off in March and the Guardians issue will be released in April.

In a previous interview with EW, Zdarsky and Quinones discussed the comic, character, and tone, saying:

Quinones: I think we’re going for something a bit more grounded here. We really wanted to explore Howard’s pain and loneliness, and how he expresses his outsider frustrations with extreme violence. Kidding! It’s definitely meant to be funny. I’m a big comedy fan, so expect a lot of visual gags throughout. Chip and I have already been brainstorming some on the subject.

Zdarsky: Expect a humorous tale of time and sexuality! I’ve basically just copied Matt’s first three Sex Criminals scripts and replaced characters with Howard and some C-level superheroes. I think it’s going to be fun! We’ll get to explore the Marvel Universe with a very short tour guide and a very good artist and me, a man who dresses as Garfield on the weekends.

Are you excited to see that Howard the Duck is making a big comeback in the comics? Do you think it will lead to seeing him again in more Marvel films? I hope so!

Potential AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON Spoiler Details Thanks to LEGO

potential-avengers-age-of-ultron-spoiler-details-thanks-to-lego

Thanks to some new Avengers: Age of Ultron LEGO play sets, we have some potential details on scenes that we might see in the movie. The play sets include "Attack on the Avengers Tower," "Quinjet City Chase," "Hulkbuster Rescue Mission," "Hydra Showdown," and "Iron Man Vs. Ultron." The descriptions come from The Brick Fan, and you might want to be careful reading them because they contain some key scene spoilers.

One of the biggest reveals the descriptions offer is what makes the Incredible Hulk become savagely insane with the red eyes, and what ultimately thrusts him into battle with Iron Man's Hulkbuster armor. I'll just say a lot of the fan speculation I've seen was right.

I know these are scene descriptions from toys, but in the past Marvel toy descriptions have been very close to what we've seen in their movies, so there are aspects of things here that we'll most likely see play out in the film. If you don't want to know anything more than you already do, then don't read ahead.

Watch A Dragon Face Off Against An Apache Helicopter in Aerial Battle

When thinking about channels that might debate the outcome of an aerial battle between a fictional dragon and a very real Apache helicopter, what's the first one that comes to mind? I'm betting it isn't the Smithsonian Channel, but that's exactly what happens in a new video they created. They run down a few possible scenarios of what would happen if the two were to face off in the sky above Seattle, and although I think the end result is debatable, it adds fuel to the fire of that age-old question: who wins in a fight between a dragon and a chopper?

Spoilery Plot Details For SUICIDE SQUAD Emerge

David Ayer's Suicide Squad is an extremely important movie for Warner Bros. and DC. It will be the first major DC Comic film after Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, and WB has already proven that they're willing to go after big name talent for these movies in order to keep audience interest high. They already have Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, and Jai Courtney on board. Tom Hardy dropped out of the film last week (reportedly due to concerns over the script), and Jake Gyllenhaal is currently in talks to replace him as Rick Flag.

Our friends at Latino Review have plot details for what will happen in the movie, so if you're looking to stay spoiler-free, definitely turn back now. For those who are adventurous enough to continue, here's the deal: LR has two separate sources on this, and it appears that they have both read the most recent version of the screenplay that's being passed around to WB executives. One of the sources points out that there could be a rewrite before the movie goes into production, but as of now, these are the details they know:

Deadshot and Harley Quinn meet early when Deadshot is assassinating an inmate that is being transported from Arkham. Quinn disrupts the hit when she tries to break Joker out and both are captured and taken to Amanda Waller's prison.
Waller has Joker moved to the prison as a means to keep Quinn in check. He spends most of the film in a cell, very much like Hannibal Lecter, until he breaks out in the end.
Boomerang is already in the Squad and there is a contention between he and Deadshot, Deadshot killed his father.
The team is tasked on a mission to prevent 'bio weaponry' from being sold to Lex Luthor by a human trafficking gang. The gang is handing over the Enchantress to Luthor who it is implied wants her for magical abilities. They kidnap her and take her back to the prison where she is kept in an underground area, which has all sorts of genetic freaks imprisoned including a King Shark.
Rick Flag is there as a watchdog over Waller. The twist is his character is revealed as being in league with the villain, Rick Flag Snr at the end. (This is what I believe may have been the reason Hardy left) It is out of left field. They want the weapons that Waller has amassed.
There is a lot of action in the script but it primarily deals with Deadshot, Harley Quinn and the Joker. Flag is more of a government agent than anything else before his reveal as a villain.

You can head over to their site to read the other account of the script, but it essentially covers the same major story beats. This sounds like a great project for Ayer to sink his teeth into, and I'm excited to see if he and his talented cast can pull it off. WB and DC are certainly hoping for big things, and I think it'll be good for the competition between DC and Marvel if DC can finally get its act together and start generating some quality films in a shared cinematic universe of their own instead of getting trampled by Marvel at every turn.
