Female Superheroes and the Big Screen

Everyone seems to be talking about a solo female superhero movie lately. And sure, I think it has a lot of potential, but there is one sentiment that makes me cringe every time it gets mentioned. People keep saying how we, as a society, are finally ready for a solo female superhero film. Guess what! We aren’t finally ready for a solo female on the big screen. We’ve been ready for a good, long while now, and the reason we haven’t had a successful female superhero flick has nothing to do with the gender of the hero.

Now, prepare yourselves. Take some deep breaths. Count to ten. Whatever you need...  Because we're going to look at some history.

There is no doubt that women, both real and fictional, have not always been treated as well as they should have been. It’s been a long road to get society to where we are today, and we still have a ways to go, but we're better now than we've ever been!

Now, of course, female superheroes are not as common as their male counterparts. The most famous superheroes are mostly male, so it is no wonder why we haven't seen as many female superheroes on the big-screen. There are, however, enough female superheroes with great backstories for us to have a solo outing with one on the big screen by now! The problem isn’t the disproportionate number of men, but the terrible depiction of women we’ve had forced into our skulls.

There are two things we need to clear up before we can really look at this issue. First, there is a difference between being feminine and being sexual. This is difficult for people to grasp sometimes, but it's true. All too often we have women in movies solely to add a little something... if you know what I mean. And that just makes women out to be objects. Come on, we're better than that! Secondly, there is a difference between a strong female character and a strong female. Sure, we could have some woman that can pick up a building and slam it on a bad guy’s face, but that doesn’t make her a strong character.

In The Avengers, there is that scene between Black Widow and Loki on the Helicarrier. I thoroughly enjoyed this scene because Black Widow was portrayed as being feminine. She wasn’t just a male character with boobs. Can you imagine Thor in the room being all vulnerable and getting slightly emotional about Loki being a “monster”?  Can you imagine Iron Man going into the room to discuss the life of one person (other than himself)? No. Black Widow is a femme fatale and uses the fact that she’s female to her advantage! She doesn’t have super-human strength. She doesn’t have mutant powers. But I’m getting ahead of myself.

We have basically been force-fed the idea that superhero movies must have a damsel in distress. The man must be manly and muscly and save the woman and then they will be together forever because he saved her and that makes him mighty. Lois Lane (an amazing investigative journalist who can’t see past some glasses) died. She freaking died! Superman had to turn back time to save her. Jack Nicholson’s Joker from 1989’s Batman abducts Vicki Vale and takes her to a church. Rather than fighting back or doing anything, she flops around like a rag doll with loose joint stitches. In Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man, Mary Jane (who was lacking all sass and awesomeness) just sort of screamed — I wonder if that’s how they used to cast women in these films, with the director sitting back in his chair and saying, “Okay, start screaming for the superhero to save you.”

Over time we’ve started to see the emergence of women that actually DO stuff! In Batman ReturnsMichelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman blew everyone's mind and showed us just how awesome a woman could be in a superhero movie! She is still the iconic film version of Catwoman. The women of the X-Men movies kick trash on their own, let alone as a team (except Rogue who the director hired for her screaming ability – which is not her mutant ability… shame). Even X-Men 3, the worst of the films in my opinion, still had strong female characters, and who can doubt that Mystique is a strong character? Overly sexualized? Yes. But still a strong character. In Spider-Man 2, Mary Jane gets all mad and picks up a freaking pipe to take down Doc Ock. This made my heart race. The damsel in distress was about to save the superhero! HOW'S THAT FOR A FREAKING TWIST?! Then she got knocked down and Spider-Man had to save her. So close.

Christopher Nolan changed all superhero movies with Batman Begins. Every woman in the Dark Knight Trilogy is wonderful! They are strong, memorable, likable, and all-around awesome. FINALLY! Not only were Rachel Dawes, Selina Kyle, and Talia Al Ghul – I mean Miranda Tate – awesome characters, but the minor characters held their own as well.

In Iron Man, who took down Obadiah Stane? Oh, that’s right – Pepper Potts!  In Iron Man 3, who took down Aldrich Killian? Oh yeah – Pepper Freaking Potts!  I finally got my wish of a female saving the titular male character. Black Widow in Iron Man 2, Marvel's The Avengers, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier is an excellent example of a woman who kicks butt and is still feminine without being ridiculous. I’d go into more detail, but I already gave an example of this.

On the other hand, let's look at the solo female superhero movies on the big screen so far. Um, well…

There was Supergirl in 1984. This obscure movie had Razzie nominations for worst actor and worst actress. It also triples the campiness of the other films along with enough cheese to constipate an elephant. Halle Berry's Catwoman and Jennifer Garner’s Elektra both completely flopped at the box office (And an argument can be made that both Catwoman and Elektra are more anti-heroes rather than superheroes…). I believe this wasn't because of the actresses. Both have shown they can handle physical roles while also being competent and believable actresses.  So the problem isn’t the actresses. It lies in the directing and writing of the films. These three movies on Rotten Tomatoes are rated 8% (the lowest of every superhero movie I know of), 9%, and 10%, respectively. No wonder we don’t trust female superhero films!

Do we care about a female superhero? Yes. Are we okay with a female superhero movie? More than! With movies like Kill BillThe Hunger Games, and Frozen, we’ve shown that we will actually watch movies with a female lead.

So why haven't we had a solo outing with a female superhero that rocked the box office? Simply because we've been given crap so far. We’ve shown time and time again that gender doesn’t play a determining role. We want depth of character. We want femininity without over-the-top sexuality. We want a female superhero who is more than a male superhero with boobs.  Give us something awesome and we'll watch it!

Review: LET'S BE COPS Falls Flat

review-lets-be-cops-falls-flat

The TV spots and trailers for Let’s Be Cops made me extremely excited for this movie. I love both Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr. as actors, as they both have a tendency to sign on to projects that have a very unique brand of humor. Their performances in other works have always left my sides aching. But this film just falls kind of flat. All of the best jokes were played out in the various marketing materials, and the ones they didn’t spend were overplayed and predictable, which was a bummer since the ads and the casting made me confident there would be some original humor in it.

Johnson plays almost exactly the same character he does on FOX’s New Girl, which is both a positive and a negative, since over the past seasons, Nick has become the reason I watch the show. But I was really hoping for something new on top of the grungy-30-something-who-accomplished-nothing-in-life he always plays. Wayans Jr., however, plays a totally different character, and while this could have been refreshing, his constant whining as the “bitch” character (which countless characters call him in the film) wears really thin, really fast. On top of that, it feels like Wayans Jr. is phoning in his performance, as I’ve seen him play funnier characters on both New Girl and ABC’s Happy Endings.

There were a couple funny moments with one of the more minor characters, a real cop played by Rob Riggle, most of which consisted of him very passionately believing in the two would-be heroes of the film. But they’re so short-lived and far-spread that it almost feels like he is an underutilized character. Pretty much all of the other side characters are either forgettable, or ones you wish were more forgettable. Including the part played by Key & Peele star Keegan-Michael Key, who appears as a bumbling gangbanger turned informant. Once again, you’d think that with so many people who have really helped to shape some of the best over-the-top comedy of the past few years this movie would have brought something unique.

All in all, Let’s Be Cops isn’t necessarily horrible, it’s just not the unique comedic romp that I felt we were all promised by the marketing. It’s not really worth theater ticket prices, but I’d say if you need a light dose of some buddy-cop chuckles, pick it up on Redbox in a couple months, as I don’t see this film having a particularly long theater lifespan. Instead, I’ll end this review the way every review of a bad movie has ended this month, spend your money to go see Guardians of the Galaxy again. I know I wish I had.

HALLOWEEN: THE NEXT CHAPTER Being Prepped by Dimension Films

halloween-the-next-chapter-being-prepped-by-dimension-films

Dimension films is getting ready to get their new Halloween film into production. They were previously developing Halloween 3D, but that title has been changed to Halloween: The Next Chapter.

The news comes from Schmoes Know, but there isn't much information on what The Next Chapter will bring, but it will be the 11th film in the franchise that was started by John Carpenter in 1978. The movie is also sure to have Michael Meyers going around killing people with a butcher knife.

The last two Halloween films were done by Rob Zombie, and I didn't really care for them. They didn't even feel like Halloween films. It is suspected, though, that The Next Chapter will continue from the events of the 2009 release, which is a bloody shame. They should make the next film as if those last two movies didn't exist.

There's also no word on when we might expect the film, but the report says that the script for Halloween: The Next Chapter won't be ready until the fall of 2015. Make sure to check back for updates as they become available.

Watch Robin Williams Learn Animation in BACK TO NEVERLAND

"Back to Neverland" is a short film that featured legendary newscaster Walter Cronkite and Robin Williams that took audiences on a tour through the different stages of hand-drawn animation. It even features Williams being turned into an animated character, one of the Lost Boys from Peter Pan. The film was a part of an attraction at Disney MGM Studios called "The Magic of Disney Animation." It was made in 1989, two years before Williams would star in the live-action Peter Pan sequel, Hook. I've never seen this before and it's really entertaining so I'm sure you'll enjoy it! Thanks to /Film.

Bradley Cooper and Todd Phillips Wanted for MACK BOLAN

Warner Bros. has acquired the rights to the Mack Bolan book series written by Don Pendleton. The stories revolve around the Bolan character, who is an anti-terrorist operative. The studio is looking to build it as a starring vehicle for Bradley Cooper, and they also want Todd Phillips to come on board to direct it — Cooper and Phillips worked together on the Hangover films. The film will be written by Shane Salerno as soon as he's finished with James Cameron's Avatar 4.

According to Deadline, Salerno said his goal is to make a “relevant, grounded and gritty, real-world, PG-13 action-drama film series" with the elite commando Bolan as its catalyst for a trilogy. This could be a big action franchise for Cooper, who recently played Navy SEAL Chris Kyle in the Clint Eastwood-directed film American Sniper.

Here's some additional information on the books and characters from Wiki:

Mack Bolan, alias The Executioner, is a fictional character who has been serialized in over 600 novels with sales of more than 200 million. Created by Don Pendleton, Bolan made his first appearance on the printed page in 1969's War Against the Mafia. Pendleton wrote thirty-seven other novels featuring Bolan, often referred to as the "Mafia Wars." In 1980, Pendleton sold his rights to the character to Gold Eagle who hired a number of ghostwriters to continue publishing Bolan monthly to satisfy reader demand worldwide. Don Pendleton remained credited as the sole author and supervised these new adventures which took the Bolan character all over the world fighting terrorism. This new series of books featured Bolan as a principled warrior fighting larger-than-life adversaries in the spirit of a tougher American version of James Bond. The demand for the books continued and Gold Eagle began releasing as many as 15 titles annually. In addition, Bolan was "spun off" into several new adventure book series which also carried the Mack Bolan/Don Pendleton names and sold remarkably well. As of 2009, there are more than a dozen Mack Bolan novels published every year worldwide by Gold Eagle Books, a division of Harlequin Books.

Artist Marco D'Alfonso hilariously imagines what it might be like if Deadpool and Harley Quinn had kids. The art was inspired by the 1990s sitcom Married With Children, and I've got to say that this would make an amazing series! Of course, this Marvel and DC mashup will never ever happen even though it should. Someone should make a web-series! I know this art is kind of old, but I hadn't seen it until today. Thanks to io9 for the heads up!

300: Rise of An Empire co-star Jack O'Connell stars in a upcoming war thriller called 71. He plays a character named Gary, who is "a young English squaddie abandoned by his unit in Belfast at the height of the Troubles in Northern Ireland." He ends up being stranded in hostile territory, and he sets out on a journey to escape through the riot-torn city.

This is the feature film debut of director Yann Demange, and it will be released in the UK on October 10th. There's no U.S. release date yet, but it looks like a really good movie, so hopefully it gets released here so we can see it.

10 Fun Facts about THE WIZARD

10-fun-facts-about-the-wizard

Yesterday we posted an action figure of a character named Lucas Barton from the classic 1989 video game movie The Wizard, the kid who busts out the Nintendo Power Glove. It reminded me of how much that I loved that movie when I was a kid, so I thought I'd put together a list of fun facts that you may or may not already know about the movie. Here you go!

  • During the final Video Armageddon scene, the last game used was "Super Mario Bros. 3." It was meant to be revealed in the movie before it was released on the NES. The first time we got to see the game was when the film was first released in theaters.
  • Several NES games appear in the arcade scenes. In the late eighties and early nineties, Nintendo had an arcade cabinet called Play Choice Ten. These cabinets would allow the gamer to choose between a number of NES games and alternate freely between them  until time ran out. The gamer would have to insert another quarter after they ran out of time.
  • The translations of some of this film's foreign language titles include Joy Stick Heroes (Germany), Sweet Road (Japan), The Wizard of Videogames (Italy and Brazil), Videokid (France), The Little Wizard (Spain), Gameboy (Sweden), Game Over (Finland), and The Child Genius (Canada; French language).
  • The truck that Spanky Frank McRae borrows from "Old Pete" in the movie is the same truck driven by Sylvester Stallone's Lincoln Hawk character for most of the movie Over the Top (1987). You can even see "Hawk Hauling" on the door as Spanky climbs of the cab during the rescue of Jimmy from Runaway recovery expert Putnam.
  • The sounds made by Lucas' Power Glove as he punches its keys are the five classic tones from Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
  • Participating theaters distributed issues of a pocket-sized version of "Nintendo Power" magazine called "Pocket Power." I remember I got one of those!
  • They don't mention exactly what mental disorder Jimmy Woods suffers from in the film, but it's strongly implied that it's autism. The filmmakers decided not to mention autism by name in the film to avoid comparisons to the Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman film Rain Man, which was released one year earlier.
  • The woman in the film who says "Roger, it's them again" is the same woman who dies trying to get off the bus in Keanu Reeve's Speed.
  • Jenny Lewis, who plays Haley in the film, went on to become the lead singer of the indie rock band Rilo Kiley.
  • A young Tobey Maguire can be seen as one of Lucas' friends in the scene just after the three finalists for Video Armageddon are announced. He is on the far left with the mullet hair cut.

Is Scoot McNairy The Flash in BATMAN V SUPERMAN?

$

As of right now there is no official information on who Scoot McNairy (Halt and Catch Fire, Argo) is playing in Zack Snyder‘s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Some new photos from the set of the film have surfaced, though, that hint at the actor possibly playing Barry Allen, a.k.a. The Flash.

CosmicBookNews came across to set photos of McNairy sporting some green chroma-key colored knee-high socks. This is the kind of stuff they use when they are going to add in some special effects.

Basically there is some speculation now that the green socks could be to later add some kind of some speed effects to McNairy’s legs. We do know that The Flash does play a part in the film, we just don't know who is playing him. If you connect the dots, this could be him, but again, there's no confirmation. This is just pure speculation at this point, but speculation that is definitely possible. He seems like he's got the look of the character. But he also could be sporting some robotic legs, or something else altogether.

There are also some standalone Flash films that will follow Batman v Superman… do you think McNairy is our guy, or are people looking way too much into it?

Intense Trailer for Stephen King's A GOOD MARRIAGE

Another story from the master of horror, Stephen King, has been adapted into a feature film. A Good Marriage is based on a novella that was part of King's Full Dark, No Stars short story collection. The script for the film was also written by King.

The story follows a happily-married, middle-aged couple who seem to have spent a perfect life together. Then one day the wife (Joan Allen) finds evidence indicating that her husband (Anthony LaPaglia) is a serial killer whose crimes have gone unpunished.

I've read the story and it's really good. There's a lot of heavy suspense in it, and it looks like that suspense has carried over into the movie.

The film co-stars Kristen Connolly and Stephen Lang and is set to be released on October 3rd.

J.K. Rowling Releases Potterverse Story on Singing Sorceress Celestina Warbeck

jk-rowling-releases-potterverse-story-on-singing-sorceress-celestina-warbeck

Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling has released another story from the Harry Potter universe and it focuses on the backstory of the singing sorceress sensation Celestina Warbeck.

In an article for Today.com, Rowling wrote, "Celestina Warbeck is one of my favourite 'off-stage' characters in the Harry Potter series, and has been part of the Potter world ever since its inception, making an early appearance in the short-lived 'Daily Prophet' series I produced for members of the equally short-lived fan club run by my British publisher, Bloomsbury."

You can read the full story on Pottermore.com, but here's a little taste from it:

Celestina has sometimes lent her name and talents to good causes, such as raisingfunds for St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries with a recording of Puddlemere United's anthem 'Beat Back Those Bludgers, Boys, and Chuck That Quaffle Here'. More controversially, Celestina was vocal in her disagreement when the Ministry of Magic sought to impose restrictions on how the wizarding community was allowed to celebrate Hallowe'en.

Some of Celestina's best-known songs include You Charmed the Heart Right Out of Me and A Cauldron Full of Hot, Strong Love. Her fans are usually older people who love her grandstanding style and powerful voice. The late 20th-century album You Stole My Cauldron but You Can't Have My Heart was a massive global hit.

I've also included a video they released of Celestina Warbeck and the Banshees performing in Diagon Alley at Universal Orlando. I think it's really cool of Rowling to keep giving Harry Potter fans little stories like this.

A second full trailer has been released for the documentary The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened? This one goes a "little deeper into the misconceptions that the public had of this production, and the effects that had on everyone involved." It focuses on Tim Burton’s unique vision for Superman, and includes some really cool never-before-seen footage like Nicholas Cage in some costume tests, some concept art, and a lot more stuff that I'm sure you'll find interesting. It's actually really kind of cool to get some deep insight into what Burton was really planning. The doc is being directed by Jon Schnepp, and he's almost finished with it. I can't wait to see more!

Check out this humorous stop-motion animated Ghostbusters LEGO short film that features all kinds of fun cameos. The short was created by YouTube user MonsieurCaron, and here's what he had to say about it:

"This is an homage to the 30th anniversary of the Ghostbusters movie made with everyones favorite toy... LEGO bricks. With the LEGO Ideas set 21108 that came out this year, I had to do a brickfilm to make the Ecto-1 shine again.
"Or course, I had to put a lot of ghosts into it, so I added some famous movie "ghosts" as well as a new one. There is no LEGO "Slimer", so I found someone else (who [eats] a lot) to fill in."

The video turned out great, and I'm sure that you'll all get a kick out of it. Thanks to Geeks Are Sexy.

Millennium Entertainment has released the first trailer for a great looking sci-fi thriller called Automata. The movie was directed by Gae Ibanez, and stars Antonio Banderas, Melanie Griffith, Birgitte Hjort Sørensen, and Dylan McDermott.

The story is set in 2044, and Banderas plays a character named Jacq Vaucan, "an insurance agent of ROC robotics corporation routinely investigates the case of manipulating a robot. What he discovers will have profound consequences for the future of humanity as he uncovers a truth that is far more complex than the make or model of any machine."

Automata has a really interesting concept, and I'm looking forward to watching the movie. It hits theaters and VOD October 10th.
