did-you-ever-notice-this-gremlins-poster-easter-egg

I have no idea how anyone could have ever spotted this little Easter Egg on the poster for Joe Dante's classic film Gremlins. Lurking in the shadows under the box that Billy is holding with Gizmo is the button of his jeans. On that button is the logo of Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment production company. You can check it out in the image below.

I have this exact poster, and it's crazy to think that after all of these years there's something on it I never noticed that is a complete and awesome surprise. If you already knew about this, I give you mad props. A big thanks to /Film for pointing this out!

Live-Action ATTACK ON TITAN Movie Coming in 2015!

live-action-attack-on-titan-movie-coming-2015

I'm a huge fan of the anime series Attack on Titan, and I just learned that there is a live-action adaptation of the film currently in production in Japan. The plan is to release the film in 2015!

I couldn't be more excited about this. I always thought Attack on Titan would make for a badass movie, and we're actually going to get it. It's being directed by special effects supervisor and storyboard artist Shinji Higuchi, who is best-known for his work on the 1990 series Gamera and the anime Evangelion. The film was written by Yusuke Watanabe, who worked on the live-action film, Gantz, as well as Tomohiro Machiyama. The creator and author of the original Manga, Hajime Isayama, is also a supervisor on the project to make sure things get done right.

600full-haruma-miura.jpg

The lead role of Eren Yager will be played by singer and actor Haruma Miura, who was in the film adaptation of the Manga Gokusen. Other films he's been in include Tokyo Park and Boku no Ita Jikan. I haven't seen any of these movies, but he definitely looks the part.

One of the shooting locations for the project is the abandoned ghost town island commonly known as Gukanjima, which gained fame for being used as a villain lair in the James Bond film Skyfall. The island was originally the site of a coal mine and company town, and was suddenly closed in the 1970s, families relocated to mainland Japan so fast that the island’s dwellings became a ghost town almost instantaneously. It's the perfect setting for this flick!

Battle-Ship_Island_Nagasaki_Japan.jpg

The movie will incorporate some new ideas into the story, so you can expect to see some differences from the anime. This is a full on Japanese production, and I'm sure it's going to be incredible. I'm sure one of the main Hollywood studios will see what they're doing and want to make an adaptation for American audiences as well. This is a rare occasion, where I actually wouldn't mind seeing that happen.

For those of you not familiar with the franchise, here's a synopsis:

The story of Attack on Titan takes place in a world where the remnants of humanity live inside a series of connected cities, isolated by enormous walls. These walls exists to keep the Titans out, gigantic humanoid creatures who devour humans seemingly without reason. These Titans have reduced the world's population to staggeringly low numbers. The 3 main protagonists of Isayama's manga are Eren Jaeger, his adoptive sister Mikasa Ackerman, and their friend Armin Arlert. Their lives are changed forever when a "Colossal Titan" breaches the wall protecting their town, leading to thee death of Eren's mother. Vowing revenge and to reclaim the world from the Titans, Eren, Mikasa and Armin join the Survey Corps, an elite group of soldiers who fight Titans outside the walls.

I can't wait until we start seeing some actual from this movie. It's sure to be an epic production and a visually stunning film.

thedrop1-tom-hardy-gets-gritty-the-drop-trailer-drops.jpeg

Fox Searchlight Pictures has released an international trailer for Tom Hardy and the late James Gandolfini's crime thriller The Drop. The movie is based on a short story called Animal Rescue written by Dennis Lehane, who wrote the novels Mystic River, Shutter Island and Gone Baby Gone. This guy is a great storyteller of dark tales, and this looks like it's going to be a heavy movie.

The story "follows lonely bartender Bob Saginowski (Hardy) through a covert scheme of funneling cash to local gangsters - "money drops" - in the underworld of Brooklyn bars. Under the heavy hand of his employer and cousin Marv (Gandolfini), Bob finds himself at the center of a robbery gone awry and entwined in an investigation that digs deep into the neighborhood's past where friends, families, and foes all work together to make a living - no matter the cost.

The Drop also stars Noomi Rapace, and was directed by Michael R. Roskam. It's set to be released on September 12th.

Ariel, The Little Mermaid — Best of Cosplay Collection

Ariel from The Little Mermaid is the most beloved of all the Disney princesses by GeekTyrant readers (I've got data). She was an obvious choice for this week's Best of Cosplay.

Because Ariel goes through a great physical transformation and wears several different dresses, narrowing down so much good cosplay to just 30 was a real challenge.

The cosplayers wearing the mermaid tail both near and underwater are the most impressive due to the difficulty of the photo shoots and possibility of drowning.

If you've got good cosplay or think I missed something, send it our way.

Warner Bros. Hires Zak Penn to Adapt READY PLAYER ONE

warner-bros-hires-zak-penn-to-adapt-ready-player-one

Warner Bros. is finally moving forward on their feature film adaptation of the sci-fi adventure novel Ready Player One. The project was announced four years ago, and the studio has now hired Zak Penn (The Incredible Hulk, X-Men: The Last Stand) to rewrite the big-screen adaptation of Ernie Cline's novel. Cline, who also scripted the cult film Fanboys, initially wrote the screenplay for his book. That script was then rewritten by Eric Eason (A Better Life), and now Penn has been brought on board to bring it home. The book is officially described as follows:

In the near future, outcast teenager Wade Watts escapes from his bleak surroundings by logging in to the OASIS, a globally networked virtual utopia where users can lead idyllic alternate lives. When the eccentric billionaire who created the OASIS dies, he offers up his vast fortune as the prize in an elaborate treasure hunt. Along with gamers from around the world, Wade joins the adventure, and quickly finds himself pitted against powerful corporate foes and other ruthless competitors who will do anything, in the oasis or the real world, to reach the treasure first.

This sounds like a really cool story, and it has the making of a great film!

8 Character Posters for GOTHAM

Fox has released eight character posters for their highly anticipated series Gotham. They come from EW and feature the main characters of the series, including Camren Bicondova as Selina Kyle, Robin Lord Taylor as Oswald Cobblepot, Ben McKenzie as Detective James Gordon, Jada Pinkett-Smith as Fish Mooney, David Mazouz as Bruce Wayne, Cory Michael Smith as Edward Nygma, Donal Logue as Det. Harvey Bullock, and Clare Foley as Ivy Pepper.

Before there was Batman, there was 'Gotham.' Everyone knows the name Commissioner Gordon. He is one of the crime world's greatest foes, a man whose reputation is synonymous with law and order. But what is known of Gordon's story and his rise from rookie detective to Police Commissioner? What did it take to navigate the multiple layers of corruption that secretly ruled Gotham City, the spawning ground of the world's most iconic villains? And what circumstances created them – the larger-than-life personas who would become Catwoman, The Penguin, The Riddler, Two-Face and The Joker?

Gotham premieres this fall on Fox. Is it possible to be hooked on a series that hasn't even been released yet? Because that's kind of what has happened to me.

Trailer for Baseball Doc THE BATTERED BASTARDS OF BASEBALL

trailer-for-the-baseball-doc-the-battered-bastards-of-baseball

Netflix has released the trailer for the upcoming documentary The Battered Bastards of Baseball. I got to see this movie earlier this year at Sundance, and it was interesting, colorful, and incredibly entertaining! I was not familiar with this slice of baseball history until I watched the movie.

The story centers on Bing Russell (Kurt Russell's dad), who in 1973 created the only independent baseball team in America at the time, the Portland Mavericks. He brought in misfits who had been rejected by the Major League Baseball system and created a very successful, wild, and fun team that the city of Portland loved.

Fast and Furious franchise director Justin Lin has already picked up the rights to the doc and is developing a film based on the story. Here's a full synopsis for the doc:

Chapman and Maclain Way’s energetic telling of one of baseball’s great, unheralded stories is as much about independent spirit as it is about the game. When Portland, Oregon, lost its longtime minor-league affiliate, Bing Russell—who briefly played ball professionally before enjoying a successful Hollywood acting career—bought the territory and formed a single-A team to operate outside the confines of major-league baseball. When they took the field in 1973, the Mavericks—the only independent team in America—started with two strikes against them. What did Deputy Clem from Bonanza know about baseball? Or Portland, for that matter? The only thing uniting his players, recruited at open tryouts, was that no other team wanted them. Skeptics agreed that it could never work. But Bing understood a ballplayer’s dreams, and he understood an audience. His quirky, unkempt castoffs won games, and they won fans, shattering minor-league attendance records. Their spirit was contagious, and during their short reign, the Mavericks—a restaurant owner turned manager, left-handed catcher, and blackballed pitcher among them—brought independence back to baseball and embodied what it was all about: the love of the game.

The Battered Bastards of Baseball will be released on Netflix on July 11th, and I strongly suggest that you check it out. Even if you're not a fan of baseball there's a good chance that you'll enjoy the documentary.

MAD MAX: FURY ROAD — First Official Image of Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron

In the 3 years that we've been reporting on Mad Max: Fury Road we've had less than a handful of photos, and none of them official. Its kind of surprising that more hasn't been released for the movie until now. Entertainment Weekly brings us our first official look at Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron. With a missing left forearm and a shaved head this is a different look than we've ever seen from Theron. Hardy looks like a grizzled badass with a single sleeve leather jacket.

Mad Max: Fury Road will attempt to make us forget Mel Gibson, May 15th, 2015 (USA).

Comedian Jerry Seinfeld got together with Wired Magazine to do a fun little video in which he discusses the etiquette of Internet use. He goes into all kinds of things dealing with the many complex social issues we find ourselves in when using today's technology. Some of things include using phones at the dinner table to the the etiquette of Facebook likes. Here's a note that came along with the video:

As technology pioneers, we are inundated with new gadgets, services, apps, messaging, games, and media. We're doxing, vaping, and Lyfting. And that means there are new rules for how to behave. Is it ok to answer an email during dinner? Is Google Glass ever cool? We got some help from Jerry Seinfeld, keen observer of social mores and foibles, on how to cope with modern technology... and whether it's ok to "Like" a Facebook posting that someone died.

ROAD NOT TAKEN - Announcement Video and Gameplay Footage

I must admit, it's hard not to love the tone of the announcement trailer that developer Spryfox just released for Road Not Taken. Kudos, by the way, to who came up with the line "All this in over 300 righteous colors!". The upcoming Roguelike looks fantastic. It refines yet also expands the gameplay foundations of Spryfox's other hit Triple Town. Road Not Taken puts you in the shoes of a ranger who is trying to rescue the children of a village after a brutal winter storm. You can catch some additional gameplay footage below, which shows the combining and battle systems a bit more in-depth. If you scroll a bit further, you can see some screens of the game as well. If you're not already interested, I'll just pull the guilt card with this.

Yeah, that's what I thought.

Road Not Taken will be released on PC and Mac (via Steam) as well as PS4 on August 5th, with a PS Vita release coming soon after.

"Throne of Games" by Aaron Jasinski

So, I guess it goes without saying, but these thrones, while cool looking, just cannot be comfortable to sit in. I mean isn't that one of the perks of being King or Queen of something? Aren't you supposed to get all the high priced royalty stuff that is suppose to be the culmination of exquisite design and ultimate comfort? Not so much with Mario's Game of Thrones inspired throne, though it was brilliantly drawn and painted by Aaron Jasinski. Mario was recreated quite nicely here, giant hammer and all, but looking at this piece for more than 5 seconds quickly devolves into a game of spot your favorite console. For the record, the Dreamcast is in the bottom right hand corner, and yes, you're welcome. You can catch more of Aaron's work on his Deviant Art page here, and make sure to put in a request for a Luigi version that has him on a smaller throne made up of just Virtual Boys, N-Gages, and Jaguars. Poor Luigi.

Disney has announced that they've cast Ben Kingsley as the voice of Bagheera, the black panther in Jon Favreau's feature film adaptation of The Jungle Book.

The Rudyard Kipling story was published in 1894 and it follows an Indian boy named Mowgli, who is raised by wolves and lives among the other animals in the jungle.

Kingsley joins Idris Elba, who is voicing the tiger Shere Khan, Scarlett Johansson as the voice of the python Kaa, and Lupita Nyong'o will provide the voice of Rakcha, Mowgli's adopted wolf mother.

The film will be a combination of live action and CG animated greatness. Justin Marks wrote the screenplay for the movie which will be released in theaters on October 9, 2015.

George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road looks like it's going to be amazingly insane! We've got seven new photos from the film thanks to EW, and I absolutely love the visuals that I'm seeing in them! They include images of Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, and Nicholas Hoult as the badass characters they play in the film. With the release of these photos, we'll hopefully get to see a trailer soon! The director had this to say about the story in a brief statement:

"I wanted to tell a linear story–a chase that starts as the movie begins and continues for 110 minutes. In this crucible of very intense action, the characters are revealed."

Mad Max: Fury Road is set to be unleashed in theaters on May 15th, 2015! If you want to read some early reactions to the film, click here. I included a synopsis for the film below:

MAD MAX: FURY ROAD is the fourth film of George Miller‘s Road Warrior/Mad Max franchise co-written and directed by Miller. The post-apocalyptic action film is set in the furthest reaches of our planet, in a stark desert landscape where humanity is broken, and most everyone is crazed fighting for the necessities of life.

Within this world of fire and blood exist two rebels on the run who just might be able to restore order… There’s Max (played by TOM HARDY from The Dark Knight Rises), a man of action and a man of few words, who seeks peace of mind following the loss of his wife and child in the aftermath of the chaos.

And… Furiosa (played by CHARLIZE THERON from Prometheus), a woman of action and a woman who believes her path to survival may be achieved if she can make it across the desert back to her childhood homeland.

Chris Hemsworth Wanted for Shane Black's DOC SAVAGE

Yesterday is was announced that Iron Man 3 director Shane Black would be writing and directing a new Predator reboot for Fox. Before he gets to that though he's been developing an adventure film called Doc Savage for Sony Pictures.

Savage was a popular 1930s pulp hero, and was popularized on radio, film, and TV. According to THR, Thor star Chris Hemsworth has been in talks to take on the lead role. This is a character I think he'd be perfect for.

Doc Savage's real name was Clark Savage, Jr. He's a physician, surgeon, scientist, adventurer, inventor, explorer, researcher, and a musician. He's basically every awesome adventure hero like James Bond, Indiana Jones, and Batman rolled into one. A team of scientists assembled by his father deliberately trained his mind and body to near-superhuman abilities almost from birth, giving him great strength and endurance, a photographic memory, a mastery of the martial arts, and vast knowledge of the sciences. Doc is also a master of disguise and an excellent imitator of voices. "He rights wrongs and punishes evildoers." Author Lester Dent described his creation as a mix of Sherlock Holmes' deductive abilities, Tarzan's outstanding physical abilities, Craig Kennedy's scientific education, and Abraham Lincoln's goodness. Dent described Doc Savage as manifesting "Christliness." Doc's character and world-view are displayed in his oath, which goes as follows:

"Let me strive every moment of my life to make myself better and better, to the best of my ability, that all may profit by it. Let me think of the right and lend all my assistance to those who need it, with no regard for anything but justice. Let me take what comes with a smile, without loss of courage. Let me be considerate of my country, of my fellow citizens and my associates in everything I say and do. Let me do right to all, and wrong no man."

I can totally see Hemsworth in this role, and I really hope that he is the guy to play Savage.
