Hot Topic Unveils MALEFICENT Inspired Fashion Line

$

Just in time to be too late for my birthday, Hot Topic has unveiled a 9 item limited edition collection inspired by Disney’s upcoming twisted fairy tale, Maleficent. Maleficent was always the villain with the fiercest look, but it is maybe a little too high drama for everyday wear. This collection inspired by the character's style is strong enough to let people know you’re a badass witch but subtle enough to be totally wearable. My favorite piece is the Bat Wing Pullover hoodie, but the Front Button coat is also pretty great. The Asymmetrical Crow Feather Top looks comfortable without being frumpy, and the Corset Top is edgy without being over the top. If you are younger than me, you could totally rock the High-Collar dress for a night of witchy fun. In my opinion, the one misstep is the Aurora Lace Top, which looks perfectly cut to be unflattering on everyone, but feel free to disagree.

The Disney Maleficent collection is available for pre-order now.

Thanks to Fashionably Geek for the tip.

Cheaters' Treasures — Can You Name All the Easter Eggs?

Artist Imbong Hadisoebroto’s depiction of a showdown between Jack Sparrow and Loki would only exist in the most effed up timeline/realm/Disney crossover — though Loki is old enough to have battled the pirate. This image is actually a treasure trove of movie easter eggs and, well, treasure. I scoured the image, took a break, and came back only to see I missed some the first go around. So don’t get cocky in the comments until you’re confident you can throw down the (literal) gauntlet. Happy hunting!

Trailer for Eli Roth's Cannibal Film THE GREEN INFERNO

trailer-for-eli-roths-cannibal-film-the-green-inferno

It's been over a year since the first photo for director Eli Roth's cannibal thriller The Green Inferno was released. Today the first teaser trailer was released, and it gives us a glimpse of what looks to be a crazy terrifying movie. The story follows a group of student activists from New York City who travel to the Amazon to protect a dying tribe. They end up crash landing in the jungle and are taken hostage by the very natives they're trying to save, who also want to eat the them. What makes this movie even more interesting is the fact that Roth shot the film on location in Peru, and they used a real tribe in that location that has never been captured on film before. I wonder how many people were eaten for real during the making of the film.

The movie comes out on September 5th. I'm not the biggest fan of Roth's work, but I will go see this movie because I'm intrigued by the concept of how it was filmed.

Tangled Contracts Give Spider-Man an X-Men Post Credits Scene

$

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hits theaters today over in the UK and viewers are in for a little treat if they stay after the credits... a montage sequence of X-Men: Days of Future Past. That's no typo. The scene puts Jennifer Lawrence's Mystique front and center alongside Toad and Havok fighting against a young William Stryker's goons. Now, before your heads collectively explode from the idea of the X-Men and Spider-Man universes being tied together, I have to be honest. This is not a crossover. I hate to be that guy, but I am about to burst your bubble.

The reasoning for Sony promoting a rival's superhero flick turns out to have nothing to do with superheroes and everything to do with Indie RomComs.

You see, Marc Webb was under contract over at Fox Searchlight to make another film after 500 Days of Summer, but after he began working on the Spider-Man universe it became clearer and clearer that he wouldn't be able to follow through with his contractual obligations. So Fox agreed to allow Webb to continue to direct Sony’s Spider-Man sequels, but only if Sony would promote its X-Men film for free.

So there you have it. Let me reiterate: this is not a crossover. As much as we'd love to see universes collide, it isn't happening anytime soon.

MRS. DOUBTFIRE Is Getting an Unnecessary Sequel

mrs-doubtfire-is-getting-an-unnecessary-sequel

I never thought that a Mrs. Doubtfire sequel would ever happen. This just seems like one of the most ridiculous sequel ideas ever, and the fact they are doing it makes no sense to me. Chris Columbus and star Robin Williams would return to make the film which is being written by the screenwriter of Elf, David Berenbaum

It's been 21 years since the first film was released, so why now? Apparently the sequel has been in the works since 2001, with Bonnie Hunt attached to write it. It went through several drafts and several other screenwriters. The project eventually died because Columbus and Williams never liked anything that they saw.

Now that Berenbaum is attached, there is a spark of hope for the talent. I loved Elf, but that was his best film. Since then he's gone downhill writing movies such as The Haunted Mansion, Zoom, and The Spiderwick Chronicles. So who knows how the script will turn out for Mrs. Doubtfire 2. I'm seriously not expecting much from him.

There's no information on what the story will be, but at the end of the first movie Williams' character is hosting his own TV show called  "Euphegenia's House," in which he gets to be his alter ego. He was also left with joint custody of his kids after the divorce and all of the insanity he put his family through.

The sequel could go in so many different directions. The version that never happened involved Williams as Mrs. Doubtfire moving close to his daughter's college so he could keep an eye on her. Since they didn't like that direction, and the kids are way past their college years at this point, I'm sure that is off the table. Last year Columbus talked about a potential sequel, saying,

"We're talking about a sequel to Mrs. Doubtfire. We've talked about it (Robin Williams), and the studio is interested in it. The thing that fascinates me about a sequel to Mrs. Doubtfire is with most actors who create an iconic charcter like Mrs. Doubtfire, when you come back and do that character, well, you're twenty years older so, you're not going to look the same. The cool thing with Mrs. Doubtfire is there's a character, there's a woman, who is actually going to look exactly as she did in 1993."

I just don't see a good justifiable reason for him to dress up as Mrs. Doubtfire again outside of the TV show, unless over the course of doing the TV show all these years he actually physically transformed into Mrs. Doubtfire. Let's see where they go with.

I loved the first film, I thought it was pretty damn funny. But that doesn't mean a sequel needs to be made.

12 Most Awesome 1980s Action Figure Toy Lines

12-most-awesome-1980s-action-figure-toy-lines

I have to admit that growing up in the '80s we had some pretty badass toys. They don't make toys like this anymore. I loved playing with action figures growing up, what kid didn't!? I have a lot of fond memories of those days and the hours upon hours I would spend playing with my action figures. I just unleashed my imagination. I wish I still had some of these toys from when I was kid, but I don't. Some of them have literally been shot and buried. Damn my kid self for not taking better care of these things! It was always fun to mix and match the toys while playing out my ridiculous crossover storylines.

You can check out my twelve selections below, and I've included a vintage '80s toy commercial for each one. If I left out one of your favorites, please let me know in the comment section below! These are in no particular order, just a mix of '80s badassery.

G.I. Joe

Hasbro (1982–1994)

G.I. Joe is my all time favorite toy line. I probably owned hundreds of these action figures over the years, and several of the playsets and vehicles, such as the G.I. Joe headquarters and even the aircraft carrier! G.I. Joes have been around since the 1960s, but the toys I grew up with were based on the classic animated series. Over the years the line has produced over 500 figures and over 250 vehicles and playsets.

Star Wars

Kenner (1978–1986)

What geek didn't own a Star Wars toy as kid! These things made George Lucas more money than his movies did! Over 250 million action figures sold between 1978 and 1986. My favorite Star Wars toy was the Rancor. I just enjoyed playing with him and having him eat all of the other Star Wars characters I owned.

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe

Mattel (1982–1988)

Apparently this was the most successful toy line of the 1980s. The toys were already out and being played with by kids everywhere a whole year prior to the premier of the animated series. That was the first ever cartoon that was based on a toy. I probably owned one of every character, plus Castle Grayskull. They playset I had the most fun with, though, involved slime. It was the "Evil Horde Slime Pitt." All of the figures, except for the female characters, used the exact same body and head mold so Mattel could manufacture them fast. I have one more little tid-bit for you, Beast Man was originally supposed to be He-Man's main nemesis, not Skeleltor.

ThunderCats

LJN (1984–1987)

LJN saw the success of He-Man and basically came up with their own thing to cash in on. The result was Thunder Cats. One thing it had going for it was that each toy had an individually sculpted body head and accessory. Kids don't think of that stuff, though, as long as they are playing with cool toys, and Thunder Cats was just as cool as He-Man. One of my favorite things about the toy was the fact that you could make Lion-O's and Mumm-Ra's eyes light up with the help of a special keyring. The third series of figures from 1987 are incredibly hard to find, along with the Tongue-A-Saurus and Astral Moat Monster. Driller and Stinger are the toughest figures to track down; Stinger's wings are very fragile, making it next to impossible to find a loose, complete figure. If you do find one, let me know.

DC Comics Super Power Collection

Kenner (1984–1986)

Seeing some of my favorite comic superheroes brought to life in toy form was a dream come true for a kid like me! These included multiple playsets with individual franchises for Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Teen Titans, Lois Lane, and the Super Jrs. One of the things I thought was so cool about these was that when you squeezed the figures' legs together they would strike an action pose. This emphasis on each figure's "super power" led to the naming of the line - The Super Powers Collection. Each figure also came along with a mini-comic featuring that character's adventures.

Marvel Secret Wars

Mattel (1984–1985)

This line of toys was made in response to DC's Super Power collection. it was also a tie-in to Marvel's Secret Wars comic book series. According to former Marvel Editor-In-Chief Jim Shooter, Mattel came to Marvel with the title "Secret Wars," and Marvel ran with it. The toys didn't have any kind of special action feature. They were still fun to play with, though! All the figures came with what they called "Secret Shields." The Heroes came with round shields and the Villains came with square shields. These shields came with a series of two-sided inserts that changed the scene when tilted.

The Real Ghostbusters

Kenner (1986–1991)

This fun toy line was based on the Ghostbusters animated series, which was based on the film. I've been a huge Ghostbusters fan since I first saw the movie in theaters, so of course I watched the cartoon and had to own the toys. Each figure came with a little pet ghost. The popularity of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ended up killing off the toy line and the cartoon.

Dino-Riders

Tyco (1988–1990)

The ultimate toy for any kid who loved dinosaurs, and what kid didn't like dinosaurs?! Especially when they were loaded with all kinds of badass sci-fi weaponry. There was an animated series attached to the toy, but it didn't last very long. The toys were acclaimed for their anatomically correct bodies and color. The Smithsonian Institution was so impressed that they contacted Tyco to reproduce the dinosaurs for their "Dinosaur and other Prehistoric Reptile Collection,"

Transformers

Habsro (1984–1990)

These toys were made in a time when Transformers were king. They had the animated series, the comic book series, and the amazing animated Transformers: The Movie. The toys were also way better than they are now. My favorite toy was Megatron because he turned into a realistic looking Walther P-38 pistol. There's no way you'd see anything like that today!

M.A.S.K.

Kenner (1985–1988)

This was a fun toy series that was like a G.I. Joe and Transformers mashup. It featured a group of regular looking vehicles that had the ability to transform into armored combat vehicles. The vehicles came with one or two drivers, and each one had a mask with a certain ability. The only problem with these toys was that I kept loosing the cool masks!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Playmates Toys Inc. (1988–1996)

I had a whole collection of these toys. I was a fan of the comic book before the animated series came around, and as fun as it was, I was still more a fan of the comics. It was just a lot more hardcore. It didn't stop me from watching the series or buying the toys, though! The action figure line had a huge impact on the toy industry as it has generated billions of dollars in licensing revenue. Everyone still loves the Ninja Turtles, and with the new movie coming out, we'll see even more toys.

SilverHawks

Kenner - (1987-1988)

The toys were based on really fun animated series, and they only ran two series of toys. Each figure was packaged with a companion bird and, like the popular Super Powers Collection, each figure had an action feature of some type. I had a few of these and I loved them.

FIREFLY Reimagined as a Disney Animated Adventure

As much as I'd love it, I doubt we will ever see a Firefly adventure brought to life again. If it never happens as a live action project, it would be pretty awesome to see it turned into an animated adventure. Here's great illustration by Stephen Byrne that gives us an idea of what the crew of Serenity might look in the style of a Disney animated production. Joss Whedon actually tweeted the art with the following comment,

"There's art, then there's Great Art…"

I also included another Disney inspired illustration from the same artist featuring Buffy and Angel.

Red Band Trailer for Elizabeth Banks' WALK OF SHAME

The first trailer for Stephen Brill’s Walk of Shame was not super promising, but this red band trailer brings the goods. Or at least, it brings a glance at James Marsden in the sure-to-be-iconic yellow dress Elizabeth Banks wears for seemingly the entire movie, and that is good enough for me. (How many of those dresses do you think they went through?) Banks gets into some not so family friendly hijinks as she races around L.A. trying to recover her car and make it to work the day after a hookup with Marsden. Her best friends, Sarah Wright and Gillian Jacobs, team up with Marsden to track her down. Banks and Marsden are on my “I’ll watch them in just about anything” list, so I’ll be checking this one out when it hits theaters on May 2.

An aspiring reporter’s dreams of becoming a network news anchor are compromised after a one-night stand with a handsome stranger (James Marsden) leaves her stranded in downtown Los Angeles without a phone, car, ID or money – and only 8 hours to make it to the most important job interview of her life.

CBS Sunday Morning's Lee Cowan goes behind the scenes to interview Chris Evans' stunt double Sam Hargrave during the production of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. While the main focus is on Hargrave, Cowan also interviews many other stunt people. Stunt work is one of the unsung elements of modern comic book movies. Most people think it's all visual effects and take for granted the hard hitting work of dedicated daredevils.

Get Your Geek Game on With These STAR WARS Football Helmets

Graphic and digital artist Brandon Hubschman designed these Star Wars football helmets, and I wish they were real. True, they might not be the most practical helmets to wear in a game (Would grabbing the Yoda ears be analogous to grabbing the facemask?), but if you put that Darth Vader helmet on your quarterback, no one would ever dare sack him. And the C3PO helmet is so shiny you could just blind the receivers and never have to worry about a pass interference call. Wouldn't it would great to see a full Rebels vs. Empire game with all the players kitted out in these helmets? Someone should really pitch that to Roger Goodell.

Great Trailer for THE ROVER with Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson

great-trailer-for-the-rover-with-guy-pierce-and-robert-pattinson1

We have a new trailer for you to check out for Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson's post-apocalyptic thriller The Rover. We also have a couple of new posters for it as well. This looks like it's going to be a great film. I'm definitely putting it on my must watch list. I enjoy movies like this. There's nothing wrong with watching a good, depressing movie to give you a pick-me-up! Also, Pearce is just a fantastic actor, and he doesn't star in enough movies, so I'll watch anything he's in.

The story is "set in a world 10 years following the collapse of society. The rule of the law has disintegrated and life is cheap. The film follows hardened loner Eric (Guy Pearce) as he travels the desolate towns and roads of the outback. When a gang of thieves steals his car they leave behind a wounded Rey (Robert Pattinson) in their wake. Forcing Rey to help track the gang, Eric will go to any lengths to take back the one thing that still matters to him."

The movie comes from writer and director David Michôd, and it's set to open in New York and Los Angeles theaters on June 13th before expanding wider on June 20th.

“You don’t know the power of the Jumpsuit… I mean um, THE DAAARK SIIIDE! Yeah, that sounds more evil. Let’s go with that.”

This is the perfect jumpsuit for future sleepover parties where you and your buddies can rewatch the original Star Wars trilogy before the release of Episode VII. Grown men have sleepover parties, right? No? Ok, then it’s the perfect outfit for camping out in line for the release of the upcoming sequel. My plan is to wear breakaway pants over the jumpsuit, and when someone asks why my hoodie is tucked into my pants I’ll rip my pants off and then cut their hand off.

The jumpsuit is made of 60% cotton and 40% polyester — so it’s as breezy as a Jedi robe and is as slippery as a Sith lord. The jumpsuit will run you between $59.74 – $75.00 from Amazon.

Zack Snyder Talks Batman, Superman, and Real World Violence

Fan Art by anasrist

Fan Art by anasrist

Zack Snyder recently gave a really long, in depth interview to Forbes. He couldn’t really speak directly about his Batman Vs. Superman film, but he talked a lot about his ideas of the characters and what he thinks they mean in today’s world. I am very much not a Snyder fangirl, and my perspective on the characters is very different from his, but it was really interesting to get a peek at what he brings to these iconic characters. I kinda got the sense that he likes Batman better than Superman, or at least finds him more interesting.

I think Batman  — now after Chris [Nolan]‘s movies and the way we track Batman through his cinematic history — he does have this license to enter our world and be a real character and not a complete cartoon, and he’s able to tell us about the way we live and our society. He moves with us, his morality — I think Superman probably less so, but I think Batman definitely sort of reflects us in a more personal way.

He gave some insight into the development of the sequel and the decision to put Batman up against the Last Son of Krypton. If you read the full interview, you might get the impression that getting to put Batman in his movie was his number one concern when he signed on to make Man of Steel, but that probably isn't true. It was probably number two or three.

In the first meeting, it was like, “Maybe Batman?” Maybe at the end of the second movie, some Kryptonite gets delivered to Bruce Wayne’s house or something. Like in a cryptic way, that’s the first time we see him. But then, once you say it out loud, right? You’re in a story meeting talking about, like, who should [Superman] fight if he fought this giant alien threat Zod who was basically his equal physically, from his planet, fighting on our turf…  You know, who to fight next? The problem is, once you say it out loud, then it’s kind of hard to go back, right? Once you say, “What about Batman?” then you realize, “Okay, that’s a cool idea. What else?” I mean, what do you say after that? …But I’m not gonna say at all that when I took the job to do Man of Steel that I did it in a subversive way to get to Batman. I really believe that only after contemplating who could face [Superman] did Batman come into the picture.

Also, love him or hate him, Snyder is still a big geek himself.

The thing also that’s really fascinating for me is that, even just in the tests we’ve been doing, the costumes, right? You basically have Batman and Superman — and this is without Ben [Affleck] and Henry [Cavill] in the costumes, but just like the stand-ins, just testing to see what the costumes look like. And  you have them standing there and they’re standing in the same shot — and then we have Wonder Woman, you know, all three of them in the same shot. Even just for a test, you really have to go, “Wow, that’s crazy!” Not only is it the first time that I’m seeing them, it’s the first time they’ve ever existed together on screen in a movie. And that’s kind of a huge deal. Even just Batman and Superman standing next to each other… [I]t’s kind of epic.

Snyder has pictures of the costumes, but he has no control over when the studio decides to release them. It’s a marketing decision, and unlike David Fincher, he doesn’t insist on being in charge of that.

And now here’s where he talks about how stupid you are for not liking Man of Steel

…I think with Superman we have this opportunity to place this icon within the sort of real world we live in. And I think that, honestly, the thing I was surprised about in response to Superman was how everyone clings to the Christopher Reeve version of Superman, you know? How tightly they cling to those ideas, not really the comic book version but more the movie version… If you really analyze the comic book version of Superman, he’s killed, he’s done all the things– I guess the rules that people associate with Superman in the movie world are not the rules that really apply to him in the comic book world, because those rules are different. He’s done all the things and more that we’ve shown him doing, right? It’s just funny to see people really taking it personally… because I made him real, you know, I made him feel, or made consequences [in] the world. I felt like, it was the same thing in Watchmen. We really wanted to show it wasn’t just like they thought, like the PG-13 version where everyone just gets up and they’re fine. I really wanted to show the violence is real, people get killed or get hurt, and it’s not fun or funny. And I guess for me, it was like I wanted a hero in Superman that was a real hero and sort of reflected the world we live in now…

I get where you're coming from Snyder, but maybe you could make a Superman movie that is relevant to our world and time and also is not a total fucking drag. Also, you made a PG-13 movie that didn't actually show people getting killed or hurt. So... hmmm. (Update: I am specifically referring to civilian casualties. The Zod neck-snap is a specific violent act, not the unintended consequence of the the general violence of the film, which seemed to me to be what Snyder was talking about here.)

You should check out the whole interview, which you can read here. He also speaks in depth about 300, Watchmen, and Sucker Punch. Via: Collider

"I tried to think of the most harmless thing. Something I loved from my childhood. Something that could never ever possibly destroy us." - Ray Stanz

We're coming up on the 30th anniversary of Ghostbusters, and today I had to share this incredibly awesome LEGO set inspired by the film featuring the Stay Puft marshmallow man. It is a LEGO Cuusoo project that you can vote for, and it was created by Brent Waller, the same guy who brought us the Ecto-1 LEGO set.

"He may looking cute and friendly but this is no mere chunky sailor. As the physical manifestation of the Sumerian demonic deity Gozer he stands over 34cm (13 inches) tall and is a formidable sight to an minifig in your LEGO city. He has articulated Arms, Legs, Head, Feet and Hands"

This is definitely up there with some of the greatest LEGO builds that I've ever seen. If you like it too, make sure to vote it into existence so we can own it! You can do that here.
