Sony Picture has released a shot TV spot for RoboCop, which is set to hit theaters on February 12th. The Jose Padhila-directed film looks like it's going to be action-packed and entertaining. It may not be as hardcore as the original version, but I still think it will be a fun movie to watch.

I've got a collection of really cool sci-fi art by Joseph Cross featuring some cyborg character designs. I've also included a couple of pieces of concept art that he did for Bungie's upcoming game, Destiny. I really enjoy coming across this kind of stuff, and I hope you like it.

I love what Aaron Sorkin has done with his HBO series The Newsroom, and the network has announced that it will be getting a third and final season! The news comes from HBO head Michael Lombardo, who had this to say in a statement,

“’The Newsroom’ is classic Aaron Sorkin – smart, riveting and thought-provoking. I’m sure this farewell season will be one to remember.”

Apparently HBO has been hoping to get a third season since last summer. They've been in negotiations with Sorkin for awhile. They've obviously worked everything out and Sorkin is set to write the third season. It was also reported that he turned in a script for his Steve Jobs biopic at Sony.

I'm confident that Sorkin will give his fans a strong ending to The Newsroom.

The most recent clip for Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit is called "A Serious Sniper," and it's an intense scene that features CIA mentor William Harper (Kevin Costner) helping Jack Ryan (Chris Pine) survive as he is trying to outrun some bad guys looking to kill him. The movie is set to be released on January 17th, and I'm looking forward to seeing it!

CHRONICLE Writer Max Landis Taking on HOUDINI Film Project

I'm surprised that Hollywood still has yet to make a movie based on the life of the legendary magician Harry Houdini. The History Channel is shooting a miniseries with Adrien Brody, and there are a couple other film projects that have been in the works over the years, such as Summit Entertainment's adaptation of the book The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America’s First Superhero. None of the films that have been announced seem to be moving forward, though.

Now, according to to Deadline, Sony Pictures has hired Chronicle screenwriter Max Landis to write a draft of a script that will focus on the life of the legend. Apparently the story will have an HP Lovecraft influence. Other than that, there's not much information. But for those of you who are familiar with the life of Houdini, you know there's a lot of material to work from, and it's all interesting! I love the history of magic, and Houdini played such a huge role in the development of it.

Landis also has worked on scripts for Frankenstein, which will star James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe, and American Ultra, with Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart

Creepy Spot and Photo for Showtime's PENNY DREADFUL - Not Human

"The body you brought me is not strictly human…"

Showtime has released another spot and photo for their creepy looking horror series Penny Dreadful. The promo is set in a dark cellar with a conversation revolving around science and the supernatural, and about some creature on the loose. As the camera pulls back it reveals some bloody shackles on the ground. This show has so much awesome potential, and I think they are going to pull off another fantastic series!

In Penny Dreadful, some of literature's most famously terrifying characters -- including Dr. Frankenstein, Dorian Gray and iconic figures from the novel Dracula, all brilliantly reimagined in a whole new light -- have become embroiled in Victorian London. The series stars Josh Hartnett (Black Hawk Down), Eva Green (Casino Royale), Timothy Dalton(The Living Daylights and License to Kill), Reeve Carney(Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark), Rory Kinnear (Skyfall),Harry Treadaway (The Lone Ranger), Billie Piper (Doctor Who, Secret Diary of a Call Girl), and Danny Sapani (The Bill).

Skyfall's John Logan has written all eight episodes of the first season with Sam Mendes, who is also executive producing. The first two episodes are being helmed by director Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage).

Believe it or not, there were a lot of special effects shots that had to be created for Martin Scrosese's The Wolf of Wall Street. Here's a video presentation from Brainstorm Digital that breaks down many of those effects used in the film. I would have never guessed that some of these shots weren't real. These SFX videos always fascinate me. Thanks to our friends at Firstshowing for the heads up.

Minion Jedi Training Art

The latest Star Wars and Minion mashup was created by DJKopet, and it features the Minions in Jedi Training. This is what the artist had to say about the t-shirt design:

I did this design as a followup to "Despicable Rebels," which similarly took a memorable scene from the Original Trilogy and infused it with minions. I like the idea that the entire mood and atmosphere of a scene can be transformed by replacing the characters with those lovable little yellow guys. Everyone remembers the scene where Luke gets to wield a lightsaber for the first time. I thought it would make a funny visual if a minion ever got a hold of one.

Geek Box Office: FROZEN vs. LONE SURVIVOR

Lone Survivor was number one at the box office this week with $38m. That would be surprisingly high, except Act of Valor opened about two years ago and made over $70m in the US with no stars at all. Lone Survivor, starring the outstanding Mark Wahlberg, should easily cross $100m in the US alone.

In second place, Frozen is still crushing it. Disney’s new classic opened across the country on Thanksgiving weekend and could only come in second, a couple of million behind The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. But now… in its seventh weekend… Frozen is still in second place with an additional $15m ($712 WW).

Frozen has now crossed $700m worldwide… and in the US it has passed Man of Steel as the #4 movie of 2013. By the end of its run, Frozen is going to be one of the 6 biggest animated movies of all time at the US box office. My guess is that just about no one saw this coming… and that Disney is deep in the process of greenlight meetings to launch a new Princess musical with a non-gender-specific title.

1 – LONE SURVIVOR – $38m. $38m Total US. $38m Total WW.

2 – FROZEN – $15m. $317m US. $712m WW.

3 – THE LEGEND OF HERCULES – $9m. $9m US. $9m WW.

4 – THE WOLF OF WALL STREET – $9m. $78m US. $97m WW.

5 – AMERICAN HUSTLE – $8m. $101m US. $118m WW.

6 – THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG – $8m. $242m US. $808m WW.

7 – AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY – $7m. $8m US. $11m WW.

8 – SAVING MR. BANKS – $7m. $69m US. $78m WW.

9 – PARANORMAL ACTIVITY: THE MARKED ONES – $6m. $28m US. $63m WW.

10 – ANCHORMAN 2: THE LEGEND CONTINUES – $6m. $118m US. $158m WW.

Geek Notes:

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is still doing very well, both in the US and around the world. It just crossed $800m WW and passed Fast & Furious 6 to become the #4 movie of 2013 WW.

Globally, 2013 was a huge year for superhero movies. When the final box office is in, there will be 3 hero movies in the worldwide Top 10: Thor: The Dark World, Man of Steel, and Iron Man 3 (the #1 movie of the year). Actually, if you’re counting super villain movies, Despicable Me 2 is the #2 movie of the year.

But… Iron Man fans take note that in the US, Tony Stark just got beaten by Katniss Everdeen. Catching Fire just passed Iron Man 3 as the #1 movie of the year in the US. This is huge, as it’s the first time Lionsgate beat the 6 major studios to have the #1 movie of the year. It’s also amazing because it’s the first time I can find where the #1 movie of the year stars a solo female actress. If you look at the Top 10 in the US for 2013, the #7 movie is Gravity… the #4 movie is Frozen… and the #1 movie stars Jennifer Lawrence. Studio heads, can we please just greenlight Wonder Woman already? Or pay Joss for a standalone Black Widow? Black Canary, Ms. Marvel, Starfire???

NBC Orders TV Pilot for DC Comics' CONSTANTINE

Dark Knight and Man of Steel screenwriter David Goyer has been developing a TV series based on DC Comics' Hellblazer, and NBC just ordered a pilot for it.

Warner Bros. TV will develop the series, which will be called Constantine and will follow the character John Constantine, who is thrown into a position where he must defend humanity from the gathering forces of darkness. At the same time, he's haunted by the sins of his past.

This is the character that was played by Keanu Reeves in the movie adaptation of the same name. It's a pretty badass character, that I think will make for a really cool series. I don't know what this means for Guillermo del Toro's Justice League Dark film project, as Constantine would have been a main character in the story.

I hope this doesn't mean we won't be seeing Del Toro's movie, because if I had to chose between the two, I'd pick Del Toro over Goyer any day. The pilot episode was written by Daniel Cerone from Dexter, who will also produce the series alongside Goyer.

Now there's something you don't see everyday, even in the Doctor Who universe. We've got a couple of fun videos and some photos from the set of the sci-fi series featuring the 12th Doctor, Peter Capaldi, riding a horse on the street while wearing white pajamas. it looks like he's in the Victorian era. The first video is apparently of Capaldi, and the second video is of his stunt double.

We are still waiting to see what Capaldi's official Doctor outfit is going to look like!

The Marvel cinematic universe is building up to the big bad villain Thanos. The character might not play a major role in any of the movies until after Avengers: Age of Ultron, but when he is unleashed, the fiery fury of hell is sure to follow with him.

I recently came across this badass illustration of the character by CGHUB artist Aleksi, and I had to share it with you. Apparently the illustration was used in the Marvel War of Heroes mobile game.

ENDER'S GAME Sequel Could be an Original Story

We still have yet to see if director Gavin Hood's Ender's Game is going to get a sequel. The movie didn't do as well at the box office as the studio would have hoped, but the movie did get some good, positive reviews. I really hope we see a sequel as I loved the movie! We previously heard that if a sequel did happen it could be based on a new series of books that Orson Scott Card is writing or it could end up as a TV series.

We have another option to choose from now. According to producer Robert Orci, the sequel could be an original story not based on any of the material Card has written. This is what he had to say in an interview with Crave Online,

"…It could be potentially original because in Speaker for the Dead you pick him up when he’s already a man. There might be an in between step if that happens….That’s why I think the rights that they worked out is it could either be one of the books or it could be original or a mix so that you can do what you need to do for a movie."

Now Card did write a sequel to Ender's Game called Speaker for the Dead, but it doesn't take place until 30 years after the events of the first novel. After he wrote that he went back to fill in the gaps and wrote a book called Ender in Exile, which could easily be a sequel to the movie. I'm not sure why they just don't go with that. The next set of novels being written will be called Fleet School, and it will focus on the immediate aftermath of the film, but will not include the character Ender.

If they do end up coming up with an original story for the sequel, will it change the story of what has already happened in the books? Will it fit in with the story the books tell? I'm interested to see where they will take the sequel if it actually ends up getting made. Where do you think they should take it?

Director Terry Gilliam has been obsessed with getting his Don Quixote film project off the ground for years. It's something he's been wanting to do for over 30 years. At one point he almost got it made, but unfortunately the production was plagued with problems that forced it to shut down. It's all on record in a documentary called Lost in La Macha

The movie would be called The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, and last November the director revealed that he was trying to get it back into production and make it his next film project. Now Gilliam has released a piece of new concept art for the project created by Dave Warren. The art came with the following note,

"Dreams of Don Quixote have begun again. Dave Warren has started doodling. Will we get the old bastard back on his horse this year? Human sacrifices welcomed. Stay tuned."

I hope that Gilliam can actually get this film production together, because I would love to see this project finally happen.

Peter Mayhew, the man who played Chewbacca in the Star Wars films, took to Twitter recently and released a bunch of really cool vintage behind-the-scenes photos from the original trilogy. I haven't seen many of these photos before, and I'm sure there are still a ton of photos out there that the world hasn't seen. I'm sure even more photos from this film series will leak out over the coming years.

Bruce Lee's "like water" interview is  one of the most treasured pieces of his legacy and the most basic description of his raw power and martial arts skills. Youtube user HulkSmash05 made a remix using footage and autotune to really bring Lee's speech to life and hit on the key points, and I think the world is better for it.

Shout Factory has released a trailer for their upcoming Marvel Knights Animation adaptation of Jeph Loeb (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and Simone Bianchi's (Astonishing X-MenWolverine Vs. Sabretooth. It's basically a really well-made motion comic, but it's still sure to be a fun watch. I've enjoyed the previous Marvel Knights Animation projects.

Superstars Jeph Loeb (TV’s Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and Simone Bianchi (Astonishing X-Men) team up for the biggest, best and, quite possibly, last battle between Wolverine and Sabretooth! These sworn foes have been locked in an endless grudge match that goes back longer than either can remember – or even imagine. The key to victory is eons old, and it’s certain to rock their world. Think you’ve seen Marvel’s fiercest go toe-to-toe before? Those were just warm-ups!

Thanks to IGN for the trailer.

FOX Abandons "Pilot Season" and Will Develop Series Year Round

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that FOX will no longer just be developing and premiering new shows in the fall, but all year round. For those who may be confused by that statement, networks typically develop and produce 80 to 100 pilots at the same time near the end of the year, premiere a few, and see what sticks. While this may have been an effective strategy in the golden years of network television, FOX Entertainment's Kevin Reilly explains how this ultimately hurts the company.

“We screen them and schedule them, and they’re announced in a compressed and crazy 2-week period," he continued. “They have six weeks to get into production. It’s nothing short of a miracle that talent can produce anything of quality. Every first season show needs a course correction.”

In theory, doing this will allow shows like Almost Human and Sleepy Hollow  to further develop and flesh out their seasons, and allow for new shows to mix and match acting talent and for more successful series being premiered. This is a model that cable television has had in place for awhile. When you look at the ratio of successful cable shows compared to network series, it's easy to see why they are making the change. Hopefully this will bring more great things to television!

The photo features Spidey hitching a ride on top of a police cruiser. The sequel is set to be released on May 2nd, 2014, and it looks like it very well could be even better than the first one.

Michael Douglas Explains Why He Joined ANT-MAN

Just yesterday we learned that Michael Douglas will be playing Hank Pym in Marvel's big screen adaptation of Ant-Man. It was a pretty awesome surprise, and I think it's great that he's going to be in the film. In a recent interview with Reuters the actor explains why he accepted the role,

"I've been dying to do a Marvel picture for so long. The script is really fun, the director is really good. Dylan (the actor's 13-year-old son) will love it. He'll have a picture he can see."

I'm convinced at this point that Marvel can get whoever they hell they want to star in their films. Who doesn't want to be in a Marvel film!? The big issue seems to be keeping them around and making them happy. I'm getting more and more excited about Edgar Wright's Ant-Man! They are bringing together a hell of a cool cast, and I can't wait to see who else they bring on board!
