Fun Trailer for the Horror Thriller HAUNT

0
0
fun-trailer-for-the-horror-thriller-haunt.jpg

This is the first trailer for a decent-looking horror thriller called Haunt. The story follows two teens who try to communicate with spirits through an old radio in a recently purchased house. I like horror movies like this that rely more on old school mess with your mind horror tactics instead of lots of blood and gore.

Liana Liberato plays a character named Samantha, "who prompts her new love interest Evan (Harrison Gilbertson) to join her in some box-play. Soon the inanimate object, which operates like a radio, transmits a message from a deep-and-creepy toned spirit who says, 'My room.' Yes, Evan's new house is haunted!"

IFC Films will release the movie on digital and VOD on February 7th, 2014 and in select theaters March 7th.

LIGHTNING RETURNS: A Much Anticipated Guided Tour

Lightning_Returns.jpg

Final Fantasy XIII has a bit of a hole to dig itself out of, and Lightning Returns is its last ditch effort to close this chapter of Square Enix’s mighty franchise on a good note. The good news is that, from everything we've been shown, it appears to be headed in the right direction, and Square Enix’s latest guided tour trailer just sweetens the pot. Lightning Returns takes X-2’s costume based class system (called garbs here) and ups the customization. Once a garb is chosen (you can pick up to 3 at a time to swap out on the fly, with each giving you different stats and abilities) you can then customize the color scheme on multiple parts of the outfit (similar to Soul Calibur's system, just not as extensive), and that doesn't even count your interchangeable shields and swords, which all have varying stats as well.

In some franchises, having direct control of your protagonist is not such a novel feature, but a good portion of the trailer shows just how much the control has evolved since the initial title in the trilogy. Your previous options were limited to jumping when the game told you to as well as only moving forward and back for the first 40 hours of the game. As long as the control is more precise than FF XIII-2 , consider that a major plus, as that game suffered from some awkward and loose controls, and for the accuracy needed in this title, that cannot be the case here. For naysayers of the turn based combat in previous games, you will be much happier this time around, as every action requires a direct button press, and the temp is much quicker. Elsewhere in the trailer we see most of the cast from the previous games making a return, including Chocolina. While not my favorite character, it is entertaining to see her interact with the very no nonsense Lightning.

For those looking for something different that includes the gorgeous aesthetics of Final Fantasy, Lightning Returns might just be up their alley. Peep the full trailer below for more details, and catch some screens from the game in the gallery above.

Mondo Poster Art for THE BIRDS and FORBIDDEN PLANET

LaurentDurMondoFullprint-Birds01.jpg

Artist Laurent Durieux created two awesome pieces of poster art for Mondo for the classic films The Birds and Forbidden Planet. In case you missed it, yesterday we posted a Die Hard print he created as well. Mondo has also announced that the artist's first solo art show is coming to Austin TX. Here are the details...

Mondo is pleased to announce the artist's first solo show at the gallery in Austin, TX (4115 Guadalupe Street), beginning on February 7, 2014 at 7:00 PM and running through March 1. Durieux will offer new and exciting renditions of classic films like Back to the Future, The Birds & Forbidden Planet to name a few.

Durieux was born in Belgium and studied graphic design at the College of Advertising and Design in Brussels. After over 20 years as an illustrator, he made his way into the world of screen-printed movie posters, creating new art for films such as The Iron Giant and King Kong.

I've also included comments that the artist made on each of the illustrations he created.

LaurentDurMondoFullprint-Birds02.jpg

"The bloody beak of the crow is a direct reference to the scene where the neighbour is found in his bedroom by Jessica Tandy with his eyes missing. I originally wanted to place an eyeball in the crow's beak, but I thought it was a bit too gory for a Hitchcock movie... so I toned it down a notch. I really love the variant on this one"

LaurentDurMondoFullprint-FPlanet188.jpg LaurentDurMondoFullprint-FPlanet256.jpg

"Man, I love this movie! So retro-futuristic, so naive, so kitsch! That's really my dope! Robby the Robot is iconic which is why I had to put it as THE star of the movie poster. The original poster is just sublime, the colours are just so vibrant, and so I tried to emulate that impression on my own take of this science fiction classic. This poster is the piece that took me the longest to finish, almost 2 months! I think it was worth the effort and the number of layers!"

Paul Rudd In Negotiations to Star in Marvel's ANT-MAN

Marvel is pushing Edgar Wright's Ant-Man movie forward, and it looks like Paul Rudd is actually going to end up in the role! He is currently in negotiations with the studio, which will most likely lead to a closed deal. It's not a rumor anymore people, Rudd is on his way to becoming Ant-Man.

Back in October the rumor broke that Rudd and Joseph Gordon Levitt were being considered for the role. Rudd has been dodging lots of questions about it while doing interviews for Anchorman 2. He's been doing a great job of not saying anything, but it looks like the cat is out of the bag.

Wright will direct the film from a script he wrote with Joe Cornish. I think Rudd is a great choice for the part, and I'm excited to see what Wright has in store for the fans with this film and what Rudd will do with this character.

Marvel is looking to get the film out in theaters on July 31st, 2015. With the talent involved with bringing it to life, I'm sure it's going to be great!

PENNY DREADFUL Promo Trailer - We All Have Our Demons

Showtime has released a new promo trailer for their new supernatural horror series, Penny Dreadful. It features Eva Green channeling her inner demons while praying. I'm really looking forward to seeing this series. I think it's going to turn out to be a good one.

In Penny Dreadful, some of literature's most famously terrifying characters -- including Dr. Frankenstein, Dorian Gray and iconic figures from the novel Dracula, all brilliantly reimagined in a whole new light -- have become embroiled in Victorian London. The series stars Josh Hartnett (Black Hawk Down), Eva Green (Casino Royale), Timothy Dalton (The Living Daylights and License to Kill), Reeve Carney (Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark), Rory Kinnear (Skyfall), Harry Treadaway (The Lone Ranger), Billie Piper (Doctor Who, Secret Diary of a Call Girl), and Danny Sapani (The Bill).

Skyfall's John Logan has written all eight episodes of the first season with Sam Mendes, who is also executive producing. The first two episodes are being helmed by director Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage).

Hugh Jackman in Talks to Play Blackbeard in PAN

hugh-jackman-in-talks-to-play-blackbeard-in-pan.jpg

Hugh Jackman is in negotiations to join director Joe Wright's adaptation of Peter Pan. The movie is called Pan, and Jackman will play playing the film's villain, Blackbeard the pirate. Javier Bardem was previously up for the part, and it was offered to him, but he passed.

Jackman isn't known for playing villains, but he has played some hardcore badass characters in his career, and I think he would make a great Blackbeard!

The movie is an origin story that "revolves around an orphan who is taken to the magical world of Neverland where he becomes a hero to the natives and leads a revolt against the evil pirates."

According to Variety, "The idea is that Blackbeard is the film’s main antagonist while Hook would serve as Pan’s close ally before turning bad." They go on to reveal that Ryan Gosling was the first choice to play Hook, but he passed on it.

As for the main character, the studio is planning an open casting call. They are also looking for an actress in her mid-20s to play Tiger Lily.

This seems like a role Jackman would take. He's currently shooting Neill Blomkamp's Chappie.

Brad Pitt to Join Tom Cruise in Joseph Kosinski's GO LIKE HELL

Brad Pitt is looking to team up with Tom Cruise in a new film being directed by Tron: Legacy and Oblivion director Joseph Kosinski, called Go Like Hell.

The film is a racing drama that tells the story of the battle between Ford and Ferrari for dominance in the sports car marketplace. It's based on the book Go Like Hell: Ford, Ferrari, and their Battle For Speed and Glory at Le Mans, by A.J. Blaine, which recaps Ford’s challenge to Ferrari with a car designed Carroll Shelby.

This would be the first time that Pitt and Cruise have been in a film together since 1994's Interview with a Vampire. They made a great team back then, and I imagine they will make a great team in this new film.

Pitt was already attached to star in the project once before, back in 2009 when Michael Mann on board to direct it. He's still interested, so he's now talking with the new team of filmmakers.

Here's a more detailed description of the story from the book:

By the early 1960s, Ford Motor Company, built to bring automobile transportation to the masses, was falling behind. Baby boomers were taking to the roads in droves, looking for speed not safety, style not comfort, and Ford didn’t offer what these young drivers wanted. Meanwhile, Enzo Ferrari lorded over the European racing scene, crafting beautiful, fast sports cars that epitomized style.

Baime tells the remarkable story of how Henry Ford II, with the help of a young visionary named Lee Iacocca and a former racing champion turned engineer named Carroll Shelby, concocted a scheme to reinvent the Ford company. They would enter the high-stakes world of European car racing, where an adventurous few threw safety and sanity to the wind. They would design, build, and race a car that could beat Ferrari at his own game, at the most prestigious and dangerous race in the world, the 24 Hours of LeMans.

Go Like Hell transports readers to a golden era in racing when Ford’s innovative strategy led to victories on the track and renewed respect for the American automobile.

BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN Gains an Oscar Winning Writer

batman-vs-superman-gains-an-oscar-winning-writer.jpg

Warner Bros. must have some issues with the script David Goyer wrote for Batman Vs. Superman because the studio has hired Argo writer Chris Terrio to write a new draft of it. He will give it a nice little polish. The film's co-star, Ben Affleck, obviously has a strong relationship with the writer and so does the studio. Argo was a hell of a good film, and he won an Oscar for his work on it. It's definitely not going to hurt the movie to bring in a talented, Oscar-winning writer!

The Zack Snyder directed movie will also star Henry Cavill and Amy Adams, with Gal Godot playing Wonder Woman. Game of Thrones actor Jason Momoa is in talks for a role in the movie, as is Joaquin Phoenix for a villain role… possibly Lex Luthor.

The movie is set to be released July 17, 2015, and I'm hoping it turns out to be the epic film that fans are expecting.

Full Trailer for HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2!

DreamWorks Animation has released a great full trailer for their awesome looking How to Train Your Dragon 2! You never really know what to expect from a sequel. A lot of them end up being disappointing, but it looks like this one could actually be just as good or better than the first movie. I loved what I saw in this trailer, and anyone that liked the first film, will be happy what they are doing with the sequel. I will say that there is one big spoiler in the trailer regarding Cate Blanchett‘s character, but they put it in the trailer, so it must not be that big of a surprise… right?

The thrilling second chapter of the epic How To train Your Dragon trilogy brings back the world Hiccup (Baruchel) and Toothless five years later. While Astrid (ferrera), Snoutlout (Hill) and the rest of the gang are challenging each other to dragon races (the island’s new favorite contact sport), the now inseparable pair journey through the skies, charting unmapped territories and exploring new worlds. When one of their adventures leads to the discovery of a secret ice cave that is home to hundreds of new wild dragons and the mysterious Dragon Rider, the two friends find themselves at the center of a battle to protect the peace. Hiccup and Toothless will lead hundreds of hero dragons in defense of Dragon Mountain, battling against Drago Bloodfist’s huge army of Dragon Hunters and their ruthless war machines.

The movie stars Jay Baruchel, America Ferrera as Astrid, Kristen Wiig as Ruffnut, Jonah Hill as Snotlout, T.J. Miller as Tuffnut, Christopher Mintz-Plasse as Fishleg, Craig Ferguson as Gobber, Gerard Butler as Stoick the Vast, and Kit Harrington as a Dragon Prince.

The movie comes out on June 13th, 2014 with another sequel coming in 2016.

THE EXPENDABLES 3 International Teaser Trailer!

the-expendables-3-international-teaser-trailer.jpg

Here's an unexpected surprise! It's an international teaser trailer for The Expendables 3! It offers a little bit of footage, but it mostly introduces us to all of the new and returning characters that will be kicking ass in the film!

The film stars Sylvester Stallone, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Wesley Snipes, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, Ronda Rousey, Antonio Banderas, Mel Gibson, Robert Davi, and Kellan Lutz. It looks like they were never able to close that deal with Jackie Chan, which is a shame. I would have liked to see him in it.

In THE EXPENDABLES 3, Barney (Stallone), Christmas (Statham) and the rest of the team comes face-to-face with Conrad Stonebanks (Gibson), who years ago co-founded The Expendables with Barney. Stonebanks subsequently became a ruthless arms trader and someone who Barney was forced to kill… or so he thought. Stonebanks, who eluded death once before, now is making it his mission to end The Expendables -- but Barney has other plans. Barney decides that he has to fight old blood with new blood, and brings in a new era of Expendables team members, recruiting individuals who are younger, faster and more tech-savvy. The latest mission becomes a clash of classic old-school style versus high-tech expertise in the Expendables’ most personal battle yet.

The movie will arrive in theaters on August 15th, 2014. Thanks to Den of Geek!

SAMURAI GUNN Review - Fast-Paced Samurai Action That You Need To Play

0

Samurai Gunn.jpg

In an era where indie games have inundated the PC market, gamers get flooded with indie games with retro graphics, each proclaiming themself next Minecraft. Samurai Gunn is an indie game with retro graphics, but it distinguishes itself from the pack by being not only very well made, but also incredibly fun.

Samurai Gunn is an action-platformer that is currently available on PC, and will eventually be on PS4. You navigate numerous maps by jumping, clinging to walls, and occasionally running on the ceiling, all while being locked in deadly combat with other samurai. You have two attack options available throughout the game–your sword and your gun. Your sword is your main mode of attack. It is fast, responsive, and can even deflect bullets, which feels amazing when you pull it off, especially when it results in an opponent's death. If you and your opponents sword hit each other, you clash and go flying in opposite directions, giving the combat even more depth. The gun is useful for long ranged combat, but you have very limited bullets, only three per life, and the fact that the bullets can get deflected (which the AI is VERY good at) balances the ranged factor significantly.

This fast paced, tight controlled sword fighting results in a game that plays out like a samurai or ninja anime. Characters are constantly jumping around the screen, landing on walls with swords flailing, only to clash multiple times and have to come at each other again. Some of the most epic fight scenes feel straight out of Samurai Champloo.

The game has two modes, Versus and Survival. Versus is just what you would expect. You compete with up to four players, dueling and slicing your way to ten kills. If two players end up with nine kills, you go to a showdown where it is one on one, no guns, on a flat field. Let the best samurai win. You can introduce a team aspect to the game by players picking different models in the same color, e.g. two green characters vs. two red characters. This can be done asymmetrically as well, so you can group up against the really good players. Watch out though, friendly fire is always on so you have to be careful lest you end up slicing friend and foe alike.

samm.jpg

Survival mode pits the players against black-clothed AI bad guys, presumably ninjas. The goal of each level is to deplete the enemy’s lives before everyone on your team runs out of lives. Since only a single human player has to have a life for the round to continue on, the games often devolve into “protect the VIP” where characters that have already lost their lives try to keep the one player alive. Survival mode is great for practicing your Samurai skills and revitalizing friendships that may have been strained in Versus mode. The AI players are very good and provide plenty of challenge. They have the definite advantage of instantly knowing where they are when they respawn and being able to block bullets like champs, but they are not infallible. In fact, the AI is quite easy to manipulate. On levels where there are environmental hazards, like spikes and crushers, with some practice you can trick them into committing suicide over and over again.

In both modes there is a minor problem of spawn camping. Most levels only have four or five spawn points, so when you are playing with four people, occasionally you will spawn right into someone's blade. This can get annoying if your luck is bad enough that it happens multiple times in a row, but usually it isn't a problem.

Samurai Gunn’s visual style is rather charming for a bloody action game. The characters are very pixelated like Atari 2600 characters, but I didn’t mind that at all. The game is so fun to play that the graphics hardly even enter my mind during the game, except for the moments to appreciate how cool it is that blood splatters and the bodies of slain foes stick around.

samgunn.jpg

For an indie game with not even 16 bit graphics, there is a ton of content. There are 15 characters and 32 levels to choose from for both modes. Sure, the characters don’t act any differently from one another, but the variety is still fun. The levels vary greatly, with each world providing a different trick, like sticky ceilings in the Caves or falling icicles in the Mountain.

The game can be played with multiple players cramming themselves around a keyboard, using gamepads, or a combination of the two. After trying both options out, playing with a gamepad is my much preferred option. It allows you to press the jump and attack buttons far more accurately and provides a much more satisfying experience overall.

Samurai Gunn is meant for multiple players. Playing Survival by yourself to hone your skills is fine, but the true fun comes when you play it with friends, or soon to be enemies as the case may be. If you are looking for a fun, lightweight multiplayer game to play over the holiday break or anytime in the future, Samurai Gunn is a definite buy.

Teaser Trailer for Johnny Depp's TRANSCENDENCE

teaser-trailer-for-johnny-depps-transcendence.jpg

The first teaser trailer for Johnny Depp's sci-fi thriller Transcendence is here. It doesn't offer any footage from the film, but it does feature Depp's character explaining his scientific theory that will serve as the basis for the film. The movie was directed by Wally Pfister and produced by Christopher Nolan

Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) is the foremost researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence, working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions. His highly controversial experiments have made him famous, but they have also made him the prime target of anti-technology extremists who will do whatever it takes to stop him. However, in their attempt to destroy Will, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed—to be a participant in his own transcendence. For his wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) and best friend Max Waters (Paul Bettany), both fellow researchers, the question is not if they can…but if they should. Their worst fears are realized as Will’s thirst for knowledge evolves into a seemingly omnipresent quest for power, to what end is unknown. The only thing that is becoming terrifyingly clear is there may be no way to stop him.

The movie also stars Morgan Freeman, Rebecca Hall, Cillian Murphy, Clifton Collins Jr., Kate Mara, and Paul Bettany. Transcendence opens on April 14th, 2014.

MAD MAX: FURY ROAD - Four Leaked Character Photos

Four photos from George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road have leaked online. As you can see, they feature four crazy-looking characters from the post-apocalyptic film. The movie is set to be released on May 15th, 2015. I can't wait to see what the first footage of this film looks like.

"Mad Max is caught up with a group of people fleeing across the Wasteland in a War Rig driven by the Imperator Furiosa. This movie is an account of the Road War which follows. It is based on the Word Burgers of the History Men and eyewitness accounts of those who survived."

The movie stars Tom Hardy as Max Rockatansky, Charlize Theron (Monster, Prometheus) as Imperator Furiosa; Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: First Class) as Nux; Hugh Keays-Byrne (Mad Max, Sleeping Beauty) as Immortan Joe; and Nathan Jones (Conan the Barbarian) as Rictus Erectus. Collectively known as The Wives, Zoë Kravitz (X-Men: First Class) plays Toast; Riley Keough (Magic Mike) is Capable, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (Transformers: Dark of the Moon) is Splendid. They are joined by supermodel Abbey Lee Kershaw as The Dag and Courtney Eaton as Fragile, both of whom are making their big screen debuts. Also featured in the movie are Josh Helman as Slit, Jennifer Hagan as Miss Giddy, and singer/songwriter/performer iOTA as Coma-Doof Warrior.

Bryan Singer Reveals X-MEN: APOCALYPSE Writing Team

Director Bryan Singer has started developing his recently announced X-Men: Apocalypse film. Last night he shared a photo on Twitter that reveals the writing team he's assembled to help him put together the story and script.

In the photo we see Singer with X-Men: Days of Future Past screenwriter Simon Kinberg, as well as X2: X-Men United screenwriters Mike Dougherty and Dan Harris. How cool is that! This is the first time since X2 that Dougherty and Harris have worked on an X-Men film. The photo came with the following note,

Late night #XMen #Apocalypse story session. #SimonKinberg @DanimalHarris @Mike_Dougherty It's snowing in Egypt!

Why the snowing in Egypt comment? I imagine it has something to do with Apocalypse being born there in the original source material.

Apocalypse was created by Louise and Walter Simonson, and the "character made his debut in X-Factor #6. The character's most popular storyline, "The Age of Apocalypse," ran in the X-Men books beginning in 1995. Set in a parallel reality formed by interference to the timeline, "The Age of Apocalypse" saw Professor Charles Xavier murdered before he could form the X-Men. Instead, a very different take on the team began with Magneto leading them through a post-apocalyptic America ruled by mutants."

The movie will hit theaters on May 27th, 2016
