The end of the year is almost here, which means we're going to start seeing a lot of 2013 end of the year video compilations. This is the first one that we've received. It comes from Sleepy Skunk, and it's a fantastically fun edit. It was a really good year for movies--there were a lot of excellent films and and a lot of bad films. In the end, I was completely entertained at the movies this year! It will be interesting to see what happens when Award Season comes rolling around. What are some of your favorite films of the year so far?

Han Solo's Original Blaster up for Auction!

han-solo-blaster-auction-1.jpg

If you have an extra few hundred thousand dollars lying around, you could could be the proud owner of Han Solo's original blaster that Harrison Ford used in the Star Wars films! It doesn't really look like much now, but it's a piece of cinematic history, and as Indiana Jones would say... "It belongs in a museum!"

Via: Geekologie

Here are the details:

Estimated Price: $200,000 - $300,000

Description:

379. Harrison Ford "Han Solo" non-firing DL-44 Blaster from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. (TCF, 1980, 1983) Harrison Ford's charismatic smuggler, Han Solo, is arguably the most popular character in the original Star Wars trilogy. The space-scoundrel-turned hero's persona is irrevocably tied to his blaster pistol. Solo was modeled after the rogue gunslingers of the westerns that influenced creator George Lucas. This non-firing blaster was created for The Empire Strikes Back and was also used in Return of the Jedi. It would have been used in the majority of scenes that feature Han, with the heavier, live-fire weapon being used for close-up shots. Particularly noteworthy scenes requiring this lighter version are when Darth Vader uses the Force to lasso the blaster out of Han's hand in Empire, and in Jedi when Han wrestles with a Stormtrooper to regain possession of his blaster during the Rebels' encounter with Imperial forces on Endor. Based on the German issue Mauser C96 pistol, this piece, measuring 11 in. long, was custom made for the film from resin by casting the original hero prop from the first Star Wars: A New Hope, it therefore exhibits the same serial number as the hero prop, which is thought to no longer exist. The blaster is exactly in its original filming condition and therefore exhibits wear from use, but retains all of the original details, including the flash suppressor and scope (the eye-piece of which is detailed with reflective scotch-lite tape). The added distinction of this particular piece is that it was also likely used by Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, as both characters shared the same style of weapon in Empire. Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from a noted Star Wars collector. To our knowledge this is the only known example of this type of blaster in private hands. This is a truly incredible item of motion picture history and quite possibly the most exciting science fiction weapon to have been offered for public auction.

Vin Diesel Addresses Fans at Vigil for Paul Walker

Vin-Diesel-Paul-Walker-Fast-Furious-6.jpg

Last night fans gathered at the crash site where actor Paul Walker and his friend Roger Rodas tragically passed away on November 30th. Vin Diesel appeared on site to address the loss of his friend, and to thank fans for the support they showed to someone he considered a brother. Diesel is a bit hard to hear over the chanting crowd, so I transcribed the speech for those who may have trouble hearing.

Diesel: "I just wanted to say, to all of you, if my brother were here right now and he saw all the love that you were bringing here. If he could see for himself that all of you showed up to show my brother love at this hard time and the family gets to see all of you...show the love that you've shown Paul...it's going to stay with me forever I just want to say thank you, thank you for coming out here, and show that angel up in heaven how much you appreciate him."

Watch The Creepier Version Of THE DARK CRYSTAL Jim Henson Wanted You To See

watch-the-creepier-version-of-the-dark-crystal-jim-henson-wanted-you-to-see.jpg

If you're like me, you probably watched The Dark Crystal long ago and don't remember too many of the details except that it was really cheesy. This version is much darker and supposedly the version Jim Henson and Frank Oz originally intended audiences to see, but was re-dubbed at the request of producers as it seemed confusing and too dark for audiences. This version removed the narrator, inner monologues, and the Skeksis very rarely speak English. There are some restored additional scenes and musical scores that were removed as the years went on that you'll notice throughout the film. Overall, this film has a much darker and more surreal feel than The Dark Crystal. As I mentioned earlier, I don't remember much about the movie as I last saw it in childhood, but I can say that without narration this movie is about ten times creepier than I could have handled at age seven! Many thanks and props to scoodidabop who spent the last two years remastering this cut so that you may enjoy it!

“This one is for all my geeks and comic book fans out there.”

Artist Adam Thompson has put his “sort of” minimalist illustration skills to some good use, crafting this ultimate Marvel/DC team-up. I don’t know what the Avengers and Justice League are looking at, but if it’s a villain… they picked the wrong party to crash.

If you’re now jonesing to see these two teams together on film, there is a very good Avengers Vs. Justice League fan-made trailer that we posted a few months ago that should tide you over… or just make you hungrier for this crossover to happen.

Louis Leterrier Directing Sacha Baron Cohen Spy Comedy GRIMSBY

The Incredible Hulk and Now You See Me director Louis Leterrier is set to direct Sacha Baron Cohen in a new action spy comedy called Grimsby.

The movie is set up at Paramount Pictures, and the story follows "a British black ops agent who is forced to go on the run with his long-lost brother, who is a northern English soccer hooligan."

Cohen was attached to the Freddie Mercury biopic for a very long time, but ended up dropping out. This will be his next film project, and from the little bit of information we have on it, the movie sounds like it could end up being a lot of fun.

Check out these incredible drawings by Ralph Sevelius reimagining Disney Princesses within the Star Wars universe! This set features Elsa, Mulan, Aurora, Snow White, and Jasmine in various roles ranging from Sith to Smuggler. The more of these I see, the more I am dying to see an animated Star Wars movie by Disney. I think it would be amazing to see and could be the best animated Star Wars work there is! Enjoy this wonderful gallery and check out his first set, which we posted here!

James Mangold Discusses THE WOLVERINE Sequel

james-mangold-discusses-the-wolverine-sequel.jpg

20th Century Fox is looking to get another Wolverine movie made, and director James Mangold is in the process of developing it. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal the director talked about the first film, as well as the sequel. He talks about the themes and ideas that the sequel explores, and he addresses the iconic costume. Here's what he had to say about the first movie,

"With the movie I just finished, I think that I very much focused, when I went to Fox and presented, I told them I was interested in making a movie about someone who feels like anyone they love will die, not only that they are cursed but that anyone they become attached to becomes cursed. That film was about Logan’s jaundiced view of society."

Mangold is not developing a story for the sequel, and Hugh Jackman will return to the iconic role. He went on to discus some of the themes and ideas in the sequel. Without giving too many details, the director said,

"I would just say it is always going to be about his relationships to other characters. We are very much trying to work with existing text. There are other great Wolverine stories out there but suffice it to say there are great texts about his connections to others, villains, characters from the lore and from the comics that we can bring out and have another great and meaningful adventure."

As far as the iconic costume goes, which was teased in a deleted scene, he says,

"A lot of fans keep asking about when he’s going to wear his uniform. It’s a struggle for us in relation to question, because Logan’s personality as developed onscreen and in comics is one in which he hates publicity. The filmmakers, even on X-Men, have struggled with an outfit. Finding the rationale for a uniform when the character disdains self promotion, why he would put on some outfit that promotes himself as some kind of hero? It’s like Dirty Harry didn’t walk around with special outfit."

I don't care what he says, I would love to see Wolverine finally put on the costume, and I know a lot of the fans want to see it, too. He's not fully Wolverine without it. The director is then asked whether or not the next Wolverine movie would once again avoid telling the story of a superhero saving the world. He replies with the following,

"The simple thing is when the world is in danger. I think it is a cheat that a lot of movies do to create stakes, about how the world will blow up or a stadium or a planet or a region will blow up if x and y doesn’t happen by this time. Much more than the genre being tired, when every movie is about the destruction of the universe or the globe, it makes it hard to tell a meaningful story when the scale gets so huge, it dwarfs the characters."

That's not really a yes or no answer, but it will be interesting to see what Mangold is planning for the sequel. It will definitely be based on already existing material, but there's so much out there, it's hard to guess where they will take it.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 - Three New Photos and Synopsis

The_Amazing_Spider-Man_2_23yes774.jpg

This Thursday, the new trailer for Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Rise of Electro will be released. While we wait for it, here are three new photos from the film and a new official story description. There are some pretty striking visuals here!

We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead.

It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp.

The movie is set to be released on May 2nd, 2014, and I can't wait to see some more awesome footage from the film!

There's also an updated cast list for the film that includes Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jaimie Foxx and Dane DeHaan as well as Campbell Scott, Embeth Davidtz, Colm Feore, Paul Giamatti, and Sally Field. An interesting note is that the previously announced Chris Cooper as Norman Osborn isn't mentioned on the updated cast list. Does that mean he's not in the movie anymore? I don't know, I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Zach Galifianakis to Join Owen Wilson in Heist Comedy

0

zach-galifianakis-to-join-owen-wilson-in-heist-comedy.jpg

Hangover star Zach Galifianakis is set to join Owen Wilson in an untitled new heist comedy that was previously called Loomis Fargo. Jim Carrey was supposed to star in the film, but it looks like Galifianakis will be taking his place. I'm sure he'll be great in the role.

The movie is is being directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) from a script written by Chris Bowman and Hubbel Palmer. That script is based on an original screenplay by Emily Spivey (Up All Night).

The film is based on the book Heist!: The $17 Million Loomis Fargo Theft, by Jeff Diamant. It tells the true story of four Southerners who stole $17 million from an armed Loomis Fargo truck in 1997. Galifianakis will play a disgruntled armored car driver who teams up with a pretty co-worker and a group of inexperienced criminals to steal the money. Via: The Wrap

The audacity of the act was breathtaking.

On October 5, 1997, FBI agents gathered at the Loomis, Fargo & Co. warehouse in Charlotte, North Carolina, to watch a security videotape of a man loading stacks of cash into a pushcart and wheeling them from the vault. The cart held about $2 million, and the thief made multiple trips.

They already knew who he was-David Ghantt, a Loomis Fargo employee. And the company soon calculated how much was missing--$17 million. But the FBI had scant clues as to where Ghantt had fled and who might have helped him.

As the people of the Carolinas would soon learn, discretion was not the hallmark of the heist's perpetrators.

Word trickled in to the FBI that Ghantt had a romantic interest in a former coworker, Kelly Campbell, who one day visited a Toyota dealership to purchase a minivan with twenty-dollar bills. Accompanying her was Steve Chambers, who, though unemployed, had recently moved from his mobile home into a $635,000 mansion. A wiretap of Steve's phone later unearthed a plot to murder David Ghantt, who was hiding in Mexico.

When the FBI arrested those involved in the heist and its aftermath, the public frenzy began. People were enthralled by the reckless extravagance, poor judgment, and peculiar taste of the perpetrators-through stories of a $43,000 diamond ring, breast implants, a faux tiger-skin stair runner, and a wooden Indian, all purchased with the stolen money.

Heist! is the account of an unlikely crime destined to be remembered less for its sophistication than for its colorful cast of true-life characters. The theft has been featured on ABC's 20/20, America's Most Wanted, and the Today show and was the subject of the Discovery Channel's Unperfect Crime.

Lucasfilm has released a new behind-the-scenes video for their upcoming animated series Star Wars Rebels. It gives fans a sneak peek at what is in store for us with the new series, and it focuses on an interview with Executive Producer Greg Weisman as he talks about the series and his relationship with the franchise.

The series is set between the events of Episode III and IV -- an era spanning almost two decades never-before explored on-screen. It takes place in a time where the Empire is securing its grip on the galaxy and hunting down the last of the Jedi Knights as a fledgling rebellion against the Empire is taking shape. "Star Wars Rebels" will be produced by Lucasfilm Animation, featuring many of the key talents that made "Star Wars: The Clone Wars."

Star Wars Rebels is scheduled to premiere in fall 2014 as a one-hour special telecast on Disney Channel, and will be followed by a series on Disney XD.

Terrific Trailer for Spike Jonze's Romance HER

A second trailer has been released for director Spike Jonze's very unconventional love story, Her. The film stars Joaquin Phoenix as a man who falls in love with an advanced computer operating system, which is wonderfully voiced by Scarlett Johansson. I really enjoy the films that Jonze makes, and this one looks fantastic.

Set in Los Angeles, slightly in the future, "her" follows Theodore Twombly, a complex, soulful man who makes his living writing touching, personal letters for other people. Heartbroken after the end of a long relationship, he becomes intrigued with a new, advanced operating system, which promises to be an intuitive entity in its own right, individual to each user. Upon initiating it, he is delighted to meet "Samantha," a bright, female voice, who is insightful, sensitive and surprisingly funny. As her needs and desires grow, in tandem with his own, their friendship deepens into an eventual love for each other. From the unique perspective of Oscar-nominated filmmaker Spike Jonze comes an original love story that explores the evolving nature—and the risks—of intimacy in the modern world.

The movie will be released In select theaters on November 20th, 2013.

Here's a couple of spectacularly cool face-melting illustrations paying tribute to Steven Spielberg's Raiders of the Lost Art. I remember seeing this scene as a kid and being blown away by the awesomeness off it. Every time I watch that scene I get the same feeling I got when I first saw it.

Prints will be on display at The Gallery 1988 Crazy 4 Cult event taking place in New York. The Crazy 4 Cult: Back in New York event opens on December 13th at 7 p.m. at 355A Bowery in Manhattan. The show will remain on display through December 21st.

The image above features Major Toht. It's called “I’m Melting…MELTING” It's a 12 x 16 inch acrylic painting on wood. Like the other, the original is $2,500 but there’s also a signed and numbered, 12 x 16 inch giclee in an edition of 50 that will cost $50.

300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE - Trailer Preview and Promo Poster

Warner Bros. has released a new promo poster and trailer preview for their badass looking new action film, 300: Rise of an Empire

There's a campaign for the film where users can help get the new trailer to be released soon by tweeting out the hashtag #300Jointhebattle or connecting through Facebook. To keep track of how close the trailer is to being released, click here.

The movie was directed by Noam Murro, from a screenplay written by Zack Snyder and Kurt Johnstad. It's based on the graphic novel Xerxes by Frank Miller, and it looks like it's going to be even better than the first movie, which I really enjoyed.

After its victory over Leonidas' 300, the Persian Army under the command of Xerxes marches south towards the major Greek city-states. The Democratic city of Athens, first on the path of Xerxes' army, bases its strength on its fleet, led by admiral Themistocles. Themistocles is forced to an unwilling alliance with the traditional rival of Athens, oligarchic Sparta whose might lies with its superior infantry troops. But Xerxes still reigns supreme in numbers over sea and land.

The movie is set to be released on August 2nd, 2013.

Wonder Woman Cast in BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN!

wonder-woman-cast-in-batman-vs-superman.jpg

Warner Bros. and Director Zack Snyder have cast Fast and Furious actress Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman in Batman Vs. Superman. She will join Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck in the highly anticipated superhero film. It will be interesting to see how her character will fit in with these characters and the story.

Gadot definitely has a Wonder Woman type look and feel to her. She's got the physique and that strong heroine jaw. I'm sure they will put her through a rigorous workout routine to prep her for the part, so she'll end up looking a lot stronger by the time they start shooting. Snyder had this to say to Deadline about Gadot landing the role,

“Wonder Woman is arguably one of the most powerful female characters of all time and a fan favorite in the DC Universe. Not only is Gal an amazing actress, but she also has that magical quality that makes her perfect for the role. We look forward to audiences discovering Gal in the first feature film incarnation of this beloved character.”

This upcoming film has been feeling more like a Justice League movie than a Batman and Superman movie. It is obviously going to set the stage for a Justice League movie. I wonder how many other characters they plan on adding to the mix.

What do you think about Gadot taking on the role of Wonder Woman?

Badass Trailer for 300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE

Here's the new trailer for 300: Rise of an Empire, and it looks so freakin' badass! I'm definitely excited for this sequel. It looks like it's going to deliver some insanely fun entertainment! I think it looks even better than the first film, and I really liked the first film. There's also a ton of cool new footage for you to watch in the trailer.

Based on Frank Miller's latest graphic novel Xerxes, and told in the breathtaking visual style of the blockbuster "300," this new chapter of the epic saga takes the action to a fresh battlefield—on the sea—as Greek general Themistokles attempts to unite all of Greece by leading the charge that will change the course of the war.

300: Rise of an Empire pits Themistokles against the massive invading Persian forces led by mortal-turned-god Xerxes, and Artemisia, vengeful commander of the Persian navy.

The movie was directed by Noam Murro from a script written by Zack Snyder and Kurt Johnstad. It hits theaters on March 7th, 2014!

SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK Movie Coming from SAW Writers

scary-stories-to-tell-in-the-dark-movie-coming-from-saw-writers.jpg

When I was growing up there was an insanely creepy series of books called Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. Some of you might remember them. They included some pretty jacked up stories and some nightmarish images that are burned into my memory. For those of you who need a refresher, click here

I'm excited to report that CBS Films is going to develop a big screen adaptation of the series! The studio picked up a pitch by Saw writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, who will adapt the Alvin Schwartz book series for the big screen.

According to Deadline, the writers will "adapt some of the Scary short stories into a screenplay about a group of outcast kids who stand up to their fears to save their town when nightmares come to life."

I personally think that's the wrong way to adapt these books. These stories are perfect material for a horror anthology film. They could pick five different stories, adapt them for the big screen and have different directors take on each one. They could turn it into a franchise, kind of like the V/H/S horror franchise. It would also stay truer to the spirit of the book.

Who knows though, maybe the story they come up with will be good. I just think there is a better way to do it. What do you think about the way they are adapting it? Do you have any better ideas?

Schwartz collected the Scary Stories tales from folklore and urban legend. The three-book children’s series, which has sold more than 7 million copies worldwide, began with 1981′s Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark and continued with More Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark (1984) and Scary Stories 3: More Tales To Chill Your Bones (1991).

THE ELDER SCROLLS ONLINE Character Progression Video - Translating Classless to an MMO is Tricky Business

0
0
the-elder-scrolls-online-character-progression-video-translating-a-classless-to-an-mmo-is-tricky-business.jpg

Another trove of information on the highly anticipated The Elder Scrolls Online has cleared the NDA wall, this time as a YouTube video released by Zenimax detailing the character progression within the game.

Character progression has been a major topic of interest for TES Online. In the standard Elder Scrolls games, character progression has been completely freeform. There are no classes, no archetypes, nothing preventing your character for learning every skill in the game. Want to be a character that uses summoning magic and two handed axes? No problem. The concern is that systems like these rarely translate well into the MMO format.

The video features Lead Gameplay Designer Nick Konkle taking us through the basics of character progression, and it seems like they did a good job of preserving the feel from the original games. As usual you have your race, which decides some of your skills trees, but a new addition to the franchise is the concept of character classes. Classes will give you three unique skills trees to provide for some variability between classes, but all other skills are shared unrestricted. So Mages can still learn one handed swords and archery without a hitch. There are also hidden skills trees you can unlock by doing side quests or finding rare events, like becoming a werewolf or vampire.

Skills progression looks like it is still based “by use” which is a good thing. One of my favorite parts of The Elder Scrolls games is the fact that the more you use a skill, the better it gets. It seems like a simple concept, but few games implement skill progression this way. Most MMOs provide stringent skill progression that gives you moves and abilities when you level up regardless of what moves you actually use.

Overall, I am satisfied by this first look at character progression. Sure, they added classes, but it doesn't look like it will change the dynamic of the game too badly. I can’t wait to get my hands on the game, so I can take this freeform character system for a spin.
