Skydive from Home with This OCULUS RIFT Demo

$

0

Nowadays it seems like everyone with technical skills is producing their own cool Oculus Rift demos, but this demo is one of the most creative I've seen. Using the Oculus and a not-so-comfortable looking harness, the Vaecon team created a Skydiving simulator, and it looks crazy fun. It's tech demos like this that make me wish I had a Rift to play around with.

I can’t see how you would control your character in the simulator and the lack of wind rushing past you would lessen the realism, but a simple box fan could fix that! If you do have an Oculus Rift, please don’t kill yourself trying to hoist your body into a tree. I’m sure the people in the video are at least semi-professional harness-hoisters.

Once the Oculus Rift officially releases it will be fun to see what an even larger audience will be able to create for it. If proliferation of cool demos already circulating the net are any sign, there will be plenty of fun things to do with it.

Slowly but surely George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road is going to make it to the big screen! It's been awhile since we've seen anything from the film, but today we have a new photo of Tom Hardy as Max Rockatansky. It's actually just a better look at an older image that leaked last year. Hardy looks so freakin' badass in this role, and I seriously can't wait to see how this movie turns out!

According to Miller, "Mad Max is caught up with a group of people fleeing across the Wasteland in a War Rig driven by the Imperator Furiosa. This movie is an account of the Road War which follows. It is based on the Word Burgers of the History Men and eyewitness accounts of those who survived."

The movie also stars Charlize Theron (Monster, Prometheus) as Imperator Furiosa; Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: First Class) as Nux; Hugh Keays-Byrne (Mad Max, Sleeping Beauty) as Immortan Joe; and Nathan Jones (Conan the Barbarian) as Rictus Erectus. Collectively known as The Wives, Zoë Kravitz (X-Men: First Class) plays Toast; Riley Keough (Magic Mike) is Capable, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (Transformers: Dark of the Moon) is Splendid. They are joined by supermodel Abbey Lee Kershaw as The Dag and Courtney Eaton as Fragile, both of whom are making their big screen debuts. Also featured in the movie are Josh Helman as Slit, Jennifer Hagan as Miss Giddy, and singer/songwriter/performer iOTA as Coma-Doof Warrior.

Fury Road is apparently now expected to be released sometime in 2015.

Tom Hiddleston Teaches Cookie Monster a Lesson

Here's a great video from PBS that features Tom Hiddleston teaching Cookie Monster a lesson about self-control. Maybe waving a cookie in front of Cookie Monster's face isn't the best way to start this lesson out. Like a true villain, Hiddleston just sits there teasing him with a cookie the whole time, but good things come to those who wait. Well... that's what I heard!

Mad Men and Sherlock Holmes star Jared Harris has landed a lead role in producer Sam Raimi's remake of Poltergeist, which is set to be directed by Monster House director Gil Kenan.

Harris joins Rosemarie DeWitt and possibly Sam Rockwell in the film. He will play a character named Carrigan, described as "a larger than life TV personality who left the world of academia behind to become the star host of a basic cable show called Haunted House Cleaners, in the horror remake."

According to previous reports, this remake will almost serve as a sequel, as it exists in the same world as the original movie, much like the Evil Dead remake. It's supposed to take place years after the Freelings were chased out of town by a poltergeist. If you want to know more details about the story, click here.

Harris is a busy guy and was also recently cast in Guy Ritchie's The Man from U.N.C.L.E..

THOR 2 Director Alan Taylor Taking on TERMINATOR 5

Thor: The Dark World and Game of Thrones director Alan Taylor has found another big directing gig and will be taking on Terminator 5 for Paramount and Annapurna Pictures. It looks like Taylor did a great job with Thor, and his Game of Thrones work is awesome. I think he's a solid choice to direct the next chapter of the Terminator franchise. Hopefully they will pull together a hell of a good story and script.

Terminator 5 will be the first film in a new trilogy that will star Arnold Schwarzenegger. There's no confirmation of what the movie will be about, but there are some awesome potential story details that have leaked out. They are SPOILER filled, so if you want to know what they are, click here to read about it. I actually love the idea, and I hope that's the story that they roll with.

Before Taylor came on board the studios looked at getting Ang Lee, Justin Lin, and Rian Johnson. Taylor is going to be awesome for the project, and I can't wait to see what he does with it. The movie comes out on June 26th, 2015!

New Trailer for Ben Affleck's Thriller RUNNER RUNNER

We've got a new trailer for Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake's gambling drama, Runner Runner. Regardless of the films' star power, this movie could easily end up bombing at the box office. I love a good gambling movie, but this one looks like it's going to be pretty mediocre. It just looks like one of "those" movies.

Princeton grad student Richie (Justin Timberlake), believing he's been swindled, travels to Costa Rica to confront online gambling tycoon Ivan Block (Ben Affleck). Richie is seduced by Block's promise of immense wealth, until he learns the disturbing truth about his benefactor. When the FBI tries to coerce Richie to help bring down Block, Richie faces his biggest gamble ever: attempting to outmaneuver the two forces closing in on him.

The film was directed by Brad Furman and co-stars Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace) and Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker). It hits theaters on September 27th.

Here's a beautifully animated short film called "A Tale." The movie is a graduation project from Gobelins, and it was directed by Guillaume Arantes. The short deals with a very tragic subject matter, but it's told in a powerful and harrowing way. It's a very deep emotional tale. I hope you like it even though it's a sad story.

AMC Wants to Teach You How to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse

With school starting up again, AMC has just announced their upcoming course. Yes, AMC the network, not AMC the college. The Massive Open Online Course (or MOOC) is called "Society, Science, Survival: Lessons from AMC’s The Walking Dead  ." It represents an intersection of AMC, Salt Lake City-based Instructure, and UC Irvine,

AMC will be providing content in the form of its hit show, The Walking Dead, Instructure will provide the platform for the lectures via its Canvas software solution, and UC Irvine will supply the professors. These professors come from a variety of disciplines such as social science, physics, public health, and mathematics. They will teach a multidisplinary course that will follow along with Season 4 of The Walking Dead , with the first class scheduled for October 14 (the day after the season premiere).

Check out the learning topics for the class:

  • Maslow’s hierarchy of needs—is survival just about being alive?
  • Social order and structures—from the farm and the prison to Woodbury
  • Social identity, roles, and stereotyping—as shown through leaders like Rick and the Governor
  • The role of public health in society—from the CDC to local community organizations
  • The spread of infectious disease and population modeling—swarm!
  • The role of energy and momentum in damage control—how can you best protect yourself?
  • Nutrition in a post-apocalyptic world—are squirrels really good for you?
  • Managing stress in disaster situations—what’s the long-term effect of always sleeping with one eye open?
  • How cool is this? This might just be a class I'll have to sign up for. After all, education is always more effective when students can see ready applications for what they're learning. And what's more applicable than learning how to survive in a zombie-ridden wasteland?

One of the things I found very funny about The Dark Knight Rises  was the fact that in the Wall Street war scene, when Bane and Batman spot each other it looks like something out of a romance. The two strangers spot each other from across a crowded room. Wel,l it looks like I wasn't the only one who thought that. Youtuber Kernel Kurtz created a hilarious trailer that mashes up The Dark Knight Rises  and The Notebook. It works surprisingly well.

Sir Ian McKellen to Play a Retired Sherlock Holmes

Lord of the Rings and X-Men star Sir Ian McKellen will play a retired Sherlock Holmes in a new film being developed by director Bill Condon called A Slight Trick of the Mind. The film is based on a novel of the same name that was written by Mitch Cullin, and there's no doubt that McKellen is going to make for an awesome Holmes! The screenplay is being adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher, and here is a description of the story:

In 1947, Sherlock Holmes, long retired, lives in a sleepy Sussex village with his housekeeper and her amateur-sleuthing son. But far from living out a peaceful retirement, he is haunted by an unsolved case from fifty years ago. He remembers only fragments: a confrontation with an angry husband, a secret bond with his beautiful but unstable wife.
With his legendary mental powers on the wane, and without his old sidekick Watson, Holmes is faced with the toughest case of his life - a case that might finally reveal to him the mysteries of the human heart.

The movie is set to start shooting next April in the UK. It sounds like it will make for a great movie! This is the second time that Condon and McKellen have worked together, as they also worked on a film called Gods and Monsters

    First Awesome Trailer for ROBOCOP!

The first trailer for  José Padilha's Robocop is here, and it gives us our first real look at what is in store for us in this movie! The trailer shows us the transformation of Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) into Robocop, and also features the evolution of a couple of different Robocop designs that we'll see throughout the film. I think the movie looks like it's going to be great! I definitely looks a lot better than I was expecting.

In "RoboCop," the year is 2029 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front. Alex Murphy is a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilizes their remarkable science of robotics to save Alex’s life. He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities, but with issues a regular man has never had to face before.

The movie also stars Abbie Cornish, Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, and Samuel L. Jackson and it comes out on February 7th. Check out the trailer for yourself and let us know what you think!

Jennifer Lawrence on Mystique in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

At the end of X-Men: First Class, Mystique left her longtime friend, Charles Xavier, to join the dark side. Xavier felt betrayed by this act, and in a recent interview with  SciFiNow, Jennifer Lawrence discusses her character's look, and where she finds herself in X-Men: Days of Future Past.

"I'm naked, but when I do get to wear clothes, I love the '70s outfits. Some of the Mystique look is a little different, but we’re still using the same paint. But she’s different in this film too. She was struggling – like a lot of normal humans – with the way she looked, and she was covered up a lot in the first movie, but this time she is Mutant and proud."

So her character is going to be more confident this time around. The movie itself looks like it's going to be badass. The footage screened at Comic-Con was pretty incredible, and everyone who saw it was 100% sold on the vision for this film.

The movie hits theaters on May 23rd, 2014.

Intense New Trailer for the K2 Climbing Doc THE SUMMIT

    $

The Summit is one of the most intense documentaries that I've seen, and if you enjoy watching docs, then this is one that you have to see! The fact that this really happened and there is footage from it makes the intensity level so much greater. The movie follows a group of people who attempt to climb one of the most dangerous mountains on the planet, K2. Here's the synopsis,

On August 2008, twenty-four climbers from several international expeditions converged on High Camp of K2, the last stop before the summit of the most dangerous mountain on earth. Forty-eight hours later, eleven had been killed or had vanished, making it the worst K2 climbing disaster in history.
At the heart of The Summit lies a mystery about one extraordinary man, Ger McDonnell. By all accounts, he was faced with a heart-breaking dilemma-- at the very limit of his mortal resources, he encountered a disastrous scene and a moral dilemma: three climbers tangled up in ropes and running out of time. In the death zone, above 8,000 metres, the body is literally dying with each passing second. Morality is skewed 180 degrees from the rest of life. When a climber falls or wanders off the trail, the unwritten code of the mountain is to leave them for dead. Had Ger McDonnell stuck to the climbers' code, he might still be alive.

Here's what I had to say in my review:

It was crazy watching this story unfold, and it utilizes real footage and interviews with the survivors. There were several moments throughout the film where my heart stopped. I couldn't help but gasp watching a man slide down a mountain and off a cliff, or seeing an avalanche threaten the lives of people. I can't believe people actually risk their lives to do this kind of stuff, but they love it; they get a rush out of it. They do it knowing that they could die.

The movie is scheduled to be released on October 4th, and I strongly suggest that you check it out!

THOR: THE DARK WORLD - Official Character Descriptions

Marvel has released an official list of characters and character descriptions for director Alan Taylor's Thor: The Dark World. I guess you could say there are some minor spoilers here, but nothing mind-blowingly crazy, so I wouldn't worry about it. Most of you already know who most of the characters are anyway.

The highly anticipated sequel is set to be released on November 8th! Here are the descriptions.

THOR (CHRIS HEMSWORTH): Thor Odinson is the Prince and future King of Asgard, an advanced alien civilization. Once arrogant and impulsive, Thor was banished to Earth by his father, Odin. The experience taught him humility, but put him into conflict with his adopted brother Loki. After saving the Earth from Loki’s schemes alongside the Avengers, Thor now faces a new enemy — one that threatens to destroy everything he cares for.

LOKI (TOM HIDDLESTON): Loki Laufeyson is the adopted brother of Thor, raised alongside him from birth by Odin. Upon learning his true lineage, Loki sought to conquer both Asgard and Earth but was stopped by Thor and the Avengers. Still arrogant and unrepentant, Loki sits in the dungeons of Asgard, with only his mother Frigga seeing any hope for him. But when an ancient enemy seeks the destruction of Asgard, Loki finds his loyalties tested.

JANE FOSTER (NATALIE PORTMAN): Jane Foster is an astrophysicist who met Thor when he was exiled to Earth by his father. The two had an intense attraction in the short time they were together, and through Jane, Thor learned the value of humility and the heroic nature of humanity. After being separated since Thor’s first visit to Earth, Jane has moved on with her life… but now finds herself pulled into Thor’s world once again by an ancient evil.

DR. ERIK SELVIG (STELLAN SKARSGÅRD): Dr. Erik Selvig is a fellow astrophysicist and mentor to Jane Foster and was with her when Thor arrived on Earth. Selvig’s mind was possessed by Loki, who forced him to aid in his invasion of Earth. Loki’s mind control was lifted after Thor and the Avengers defeated him, but Selvig’s mental state has deteriorated due to Loki’s influence. Selvig now finds himself at the center of cosmic events once again as two worlds collide.

DARCY LEWIS (KAT DENNINGS): Darcy Lewis is Jane Foster’s intern, a quirky but quick-thinking poli-sci major who found herself in the middle of Earth’s first contact with an alien civilization. And while she doesn’t always understand everything that’s happening around her, she doesn’t hesitate to speak up about it. When Jane discovers an ancient cosmological event affecting the Earth, it’s Darcy who has to pick up the slack when Jane disappears.

HEIMDALL (IDRIS ELBA): Heimdall is the sentinel of Asgard with the ability to see and hear events galaxies away. He stands at his post in Asgard’s Observatory, watching over the cosmos and protecting Asgard from any and all intruders. As one of Odin’s most trusted warriors, Heimdall is beyond reproach… but now Asgard faces an enemy that even Heimdall cannot see.

MALEKITH (CHRISTOPHER ECCLESTON): Malekith is the cruel leader of the Dark Elves, a race of beings said to be older than the universe itself. Born into darkness, Malekith led his people in a war against the Asgardians, but they were thought to have been destroyed thousands of years ago. Malekith survived, however, and now seeks to transform our universe, plunging it back into eternal darkness.

ALGRIM/KURSE (ADEWALE AKINNUOYE-AGBAJE): Algrim/Kurse is Malekith’s trusted and loyal lieutenant. He fought at Malekith’s side during the initial war with Asgard thousands of years ago, but now their time is running out. Algrim is called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice and is transformed into the monstrous Kurse. With a new and terrifying power, Kurse seeks to destroy Thor and Asgard in preparation for Malekith’s arrival.

VOLSTAGG (RAY STEVENSON): Volstagg makes up one third of the Warriors Three, Asgard’s greatest and most loyal warriors. Large and imposing, Volstagg’s skill with an axe is matched only by his appetite. With Fandral and Hogun, Volstagg has fought alongside Thor on many adventures across the cosmos. And while the stories of his exploits are often elaborated, he’s a hero to the Asgardian people.

FANDRAL (ZACHARY LEVI): Fandral is Asgard’s finest swordsman, which serves him well as a member of the Warriors Three. Alongside Volstagg and Hogun, Fandral fights to protect Asgard from any and all foes. When not using his sword to smite his enemies, Fandral uses his charm and good looks to woo the ladies.

HOGUN (TADANOBU ASANO): Hogun, often known as Hogun The Grim, is the deadliest of the Warriors Three. With both spiked mace and blade, Hogun defends Asgard as well as his own home, the peaceful planet of Vanaheim. Though he rarely speaks, his loyalty to Thor is legendary… as is his disapproval of Fandral and Volstagg’s frivolous natures.

SIF (JAIMIE ALEXANDER): Sif is one of Asgard’s most formidable warriors. Skilled and fearless, she’s a trusted and faithful ally to Thor. During his banishment, Sif saw Loki’s treachery and risked all to return Thor to Asgard…but on Earth, she saw that she had lost Thor’s heart to another—the human Jane Foster. Now at the end of a long campaign to free the Nine Realms from strife, Sif seeks to rekindle her relationship with Thor.

FRIGGA (RENE RUSSO): Frigga is wife of Odin and mother of Thor and Loki. The glue that holds the royal family together, Frigga knew that there was more to Odin’s banishment of Thor than met the eye, just as she now sees that there’s more within the villainous Loki than the others see. But when Asgard is attacked, Frigga will fight to defend those that she loves at any cost.

ODIN (ANTHONY HOPKINS): Odin is King of Asgard, Protector of the Nine Realms, and father to Thor and Loki. Odin’s long reign is coming to an end, however, and while disappointed with Thor’s arrogance at first, he now sees that Thor is ready for the throne. But when an ancient enemy returns, Odin questions Thor’s allegiances… for if Thor is to be king, he must choose duty over his heart’s desires.

Will Smith Could Come Back for INDEPENDENCE DAY Sequel

Independence Day director Roland Emmerich has said several times that Will Smith will not be involved in the sequel he is currently developing. But it looks like he's starting to change his tune. In a recent interview with Digital Spy, Emmerich says that he has planned a meeting with the actor to discuss the possibility of his return.

"I sometimes say no, Will Smith will not be in it because he didn't want to do it at first. Now we have a meeting planned, we want to talk about it again. Anything can happen."

It was previously revealed that the next two movies would be called ID Forever - Part 1  and ID Forever - Part 2. They would take place 20 years after the first film, and here's a little rundown of the plot that Emmerich gave in a previous interview,

"The humans knew that one day the aliens would come back, and they know that the only way you can really travel in space is through wormholes. So for the aliens, it could take two or three weeks, but for us that’s 20 or 25 years. It’s a changed world. It’s like parallel history. [Humans] have harnessed all this alien technology. We don’t know how to duplicate it because it’s organically-grown technology, but we know how to take an antigravity device and put it in a human airplane."

It was also explained at the time that the storylines will focus on a new generation of human heroes, which will include the stepson of Smith’s Independence Day character. He says that "it’s still some of the same characters, but also new younger characters; it’s a little bit like the sons take over."

There's no word on who else will star in the film, but it sounds like Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum could also return.

Do you think Smith needs to be in the sequel for it to be successful?

Trailer for the Documentary on Tim Burton's SUPERMAN LIVES

Here's the trailer for an interesting-looking documentary called The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened? It focuses on the 1998 Superman Lives film that was being directed by Tim Burton, written by Kevin Smith, and was to star Nicolas Cage. Over the years, we've seen a bunch of behind the scenes photos and video test footage from this awful-looking movie that featured some of the costumes and Cage as the Man of Steel.

The documentary was Kickstarted and directed by filmmaker Jon Schnepp, who is behind series such as Metalocalypse and Venture Bros. Here's a description of the Doc.

The Death of “Superman Lives”: What Happened? is a Feature Length Documentary about the unmade movie "Superman Lives". This film, out of all the various attempts to make a Superman movie between 1987 and 2006, would have stood the test of time and become a bonafide Cult Classic nowadays. I am not alone with my intense interest in knowing everything I can about this project, and so now I'm embarking on making a Documentary that will cover everything ever made for this film, from interviewing as many people as I can who were involved, to including actually recreating scenes from the script!!!

This should prove to be a fun and interesting documentary, and it's set to be released sometime in the summer of 2014. I can't help but think that Superman Lives would have been the worst Superman movie ever made.

    MASS EFFECT 4: A Gamer's Wishlist

    $
    0
    0

While Bioware is currently focusing most of their attention on Dragon Age: Inquisition, and rightly so, since it looks off the charts stunning, but afterwards, what comes next? While they have teased slivers of info on their plan for the future of the franchise, there are little to no actual facts on the game itself or what it will focus on.

Well, that's not good enough for me, as I'm already a few hours into playthrough number 4 of Mass Effect 3, and I've started to compile a mental checklist of what I would like to see from entry number 4 (or whatever it ends up being called). I thought I'd share, and if you've got anything you want to add, make sure to put it in the comments.

    The Return of Gray

The ramifications of your choices in Mass Effect are great, but the choices themselves are pretty binary. You're either going to be a heel or a good guy, to borrow some wrestling terms, and while that was fine this go round, I would like for the game to be more in line with Dragon Age Origins and The Walking Dead, as most choices in those games are not that simple, and sometimes there is no "good" option, just the best option among bad ones. The Paragon and Renegade system ran its course by entry three, and it needs some reworking in the next gen.

Bring Exploration back to the final frontier

Yeah, I did use a Star Trek reference there, but it worked so sue me. In the original Mass Effect you could traverse various side planets with your trusty Mako rover. The thing is, the Mako handled like a twitchy brick, and while exploring was cool, by planet number two you realized there was little to nothing to find on each one, so the payoff for the 30 minutes you spent driving around this huge place was nil. Yes, one had the thrasher maw, but that was not the case for the others. Mass Effect 2 tried to refine this premise, and gave you access to the Hammerhead, which was mindless fun for a minute or two, but lacked any real challenge and was just something to break up the action. Fine for what it was, but not something I'm jonesing to see make a return. Finally, Mass Effect 3 had Cerberus mechs you could climb into, which was also a nice alternative to the ordinary combat, but nothing can truly replace the Mako and what it represented. Next gen hardware and the team's experience should allow a fully realized Mako, one that controls well, has multiple types of attacks, and allows for more bits of small talk amongst the team you've brought with you. Plus, you're going to have to have something to ride around in when you build your base.

    Every Team Needs a Headquarters

You spend 50% of the time on the Normandy, and in the new game I'm sure you will have some sort of ship that is comparable, but what do you do the other 50% of the time?  Other than your bachelor pad in Citadel, Mass Effect did not have anywhere for you to call home other than the cramped quarters of the Normandy. This comes down to the fact that I’m 5, and I want a fort, dang it, complete with upgradeable defenses, customizable looks for the inside, and upgradable rooms (research, combat, training, etc). Workbenches and Armor Displays are fine and all, and worked like they should, but I always wanted a central HQ where I could address everything concerning my team without taking an elevator. Taking a cue from Middle Manager of Justice, your base would have training available for party members who aren’t currently on a mission, allowing you to up their stats in certain categories while away from home base, but the caveat would be they remain unavailable for use up to a certain amount of time. I’m a multitasker by nature, so this extra bit of control of how all of my characters level would scratch that control freak itch I tend to have.

Um, Why don't Shotguns Make Things 'Splode?

While we are speaking about tweaks to characters, let's address something else that needs a bit of tweaking. I'm a vanguard in the single player campaign, so moving up close and around the battlefield is something that comes second nature to my character. I currently use a medium to long range sniper rifle and a heavy pistol, and that's for one sole reason. The shotguns kinda blow. Seriously. Even at full damage and up close, they don't pack the punch of a well placed heavy pistol shot, and that should not be the case. Just something that needs to be addressed.

    N7 with Friends

One of the biggest surprises of Mass Effect 3 was its stellar multiplayer component, and while I'm sure we'll get some of the general more of this and less of that fixes and tweaks to the mode, one thing cannot change.

    Do not add deathmatch.

Seriously, so not kidding about this.

I know it's tempting, but take a look at Tomb Raider for proof that not every game needs a deathmatch style mode. Co-op is where you excel, so build on that rather than adding a generic mode that everyone else already does and better.

    We Always Need Heroes

When things start to get overwhelming, any option to stabilize the situation would be welcome, and the idea would be to have some sort of meter or gauge that if built up can call in one of the Normandy's (or insert new ship name here) crew to help with a special attack or support ability (think Marvel vs. Capcom). In this gen’s case, it would be tantamount to Jack hopping in and K.O.ing a Cerberus mech with 2 giant Biotic blasts then flipping the bird to everyone else in the room as she makes her exit. Points for this should be distributed to players for coming together as a team, further discouraging lone wolves to take off and die on the other side of the map.

Alright, so those are my thoughts on the subject. Regardless of what character the new entries center around, these tweaks and enhancements could really go a long way to making an already great series even better.
