Steven Soderbergh may not be directing movies anymore, but he is loading up with TV projects. He's set to direct a new original series for Cinemax called The Knick, which stars Clive Owen. Soderbergh will direct all 10 episodes of the series. The story is set in downtown New York in 1900, and "centers on Knickerbocker Hospital and the groundbreaking surgeons, nurses and staff, who push the bounds of medicine in a time of astonishingly high mortality rates and zero antibiotics."

I'm sure this will be a great series. I love the stuff Soderbergh does because it's not crap. I also like Clive Owen as an actor and I think it's great that the two are teaming up to tell this story.

Here's the full press release:

LOS ANGELES, July 25, 2013 – Academy Award® winner and Emmy® nominee Steven Soderbergh (“Traffic,” “Side Effects,” HBO’s “Behind the Candelabra”) will direct Academy Award® and Emmy® nominee Clive Owen (“Children of Men,” HBO’s “Hemingway & Gellhorn”) in the entire ten-episode season of the CINEMAX original series THE KNICK, which begins production in New York in September.
Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming, says, “We are thrilled that Steven and Clive have chosen to bring this unique and exciting series to CINEMAX.”
Set in downtown New York in 1900, THE KNICK centers on Knickerbocker Hospital and the groundbreaking surgeons, nurses and staff, who push the bounds of medicine in a time of astonishingly high mortality rates and zero antibiotics. The writing team of Jack Amiel and Michael Begler (“Raising Helen,” “Big Miracle”), who wrote the pilot for the series, will serve as executive producers, along with Soderbergh, Owen, Michael Sugar (“Rendition”) and Gregory Jacobs (“Behind the Candelabra”). Michael Polaire (“Behind the Candelabra”) produces. Kary Antholis, president, HBO Miniseries and CINEMAX Programming, and David Levine, vice president, HBO Entertainment, will oversee the series, which will debut on the network in 2014.

Here's a funny new clip from Kick-Ass 2 featuring the first meeting of the superhero team Justice Forever, led by Jim Carrey's Colonel Star and Stripes. As the characters go around introducing themselves, Kick-Ass (Aaron Johnson) realizes that he knows who Battle Guy (Clark Duke) is. It's actually quite entertaining, check it out!

The movie hits theaters on August 16th, 2013.  Thanks to Digital Spy for the clip!

Kick-Ass, Hit Girl and Red Mist return for the follow-up to 2010’s irreverent global hit: Kick-Ass 2. After Kick-Ass’ (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) insane bravery inspires a new wave of self-made masked crusaders, led by the badass Colonel Stars and Stripes (Jim Carrey), our hero joins them on patrol. When these amateur superheroes are hunted down by Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse)—reborn as The Mother F%&*^r—only the blade-wielding Hit Girl (Chloë Grace Moretz) can prevent their annihilation.
When we last saw junior assassin Hit Girl and young vigilante Kick-Ass, they were trying to live as normal teenagers Mindy and Dave. With graduation looming and uncertain what to do, Dave decides to start the world’s first superhero team with Mindy. Unfortunately, when Mindy is busted for sneaking out as Hit Girl, she’s forced to retire—leaving her to navigate the terrifying world of high-school mean girls on her own. With no one left to turn to, Dave joins forces with Justice Forever, run by a born-again ex-mobster named Colonel Stars and Stripes.
Just as they start to make a real difference on the streets, the world’s first super villain, The Mother F%&*^r, assembles his own evil league and puts a plan in motion to make Kick-Ass and Hit Girl pay for what they did to his dad. But there’s only one problem with his scheme: If you mess with one member of Justice Forever, you mess with them all.

Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Warwick Davis (Wicket), Jeremy Bulloch (Boba fett), Ian McDiarmid (Emperor Palpatine), Anthony Daniels (C3PO), and Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) all appeared at a Star Wars Celebration in Germany for kind of a 30 year reunion of the The Return of the Jedi''s release.  In the video below you'll find some interviews with some of these cast members talking about the movies, and the impact they had on people. It's always fun listening to these actors talk about Star Wars.

Hamill, Fisher, and Harrison Ford are expected to return to the franchise for J.J. AbramsStar Wars: Episode VII, and it looks like they are little more healthy looking than when we last saw them.

THE HOBBIT - Peter Jackson Blogs the Last Day of Shooting

As of today Peter Jackson is completely finished shooting the last two installments of his Hobbit trilogy, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and The Hoibbit: There and Back Again. As a way to celebrate and say goodbye, Jackson live-blogged the day, posting several behind-the-scenes photos on his official Facebook page.

The day started out with the following note, and below it you will find a series of photos.

Our last day of shooting.
Ever since starting these blogs, there’s been something I thought I’d like to try one day (as well as answering the other 19 questions I owe you!) – blogging throughout a shoot day in real time. Try to give you all a feeling for what we deal with on an average day.
Today is not exactly “average”, given it’s our last day of shooting, but if I don’t do it today, I never will!
So here goes … I’ll try to update as much as I can during the day. At least with a quick photo. Text will depend a little on how busy it gets.
Right now, it’s just gone 6.30am here in Wellington. I’m in bed, about to get up! I didn’t get much sleep – too stressed about how we’re going to get through everything we need to shoot. I kept running it over in my mind.
We’re shooting scenes for Film 3 today. Stuff you will see in Dec 2014, so I’m going to try and make this honest, but spoiler free.
I’ve been lying here in pitch darkness, watching fight rehearsals over and over again. Our stunt coordinatior, Glen Boswell, worked with the actors last weekend, designing some climatic battle moments. He filmed them, and I have them on my iPad, in an application we wrote called “WingNut TV”. It’s a program that allows a huge amount of material to be catalog used and updated each day over the Internet. It contains all our dailies, edited films, previs, music, and much more. I’m looking at the fights, figuring out the angles I’ll need to film them today. A huge amount to do, and it needs to get done.
Our shoot day starts at 8.30am, and is supposed to finish at 7.30pm. I suspect we’ll be working late. Whenever we work a long day, I joke with the crew that I’m just softening them up for when Jim Cameron shows up in Wellington to shoot Avatar 2 and 3. Well … It’s not really a joke.

I'm so excited to see these final two films!

Conan O'Brien got his hands on some fun Spider-Man footage to share with everyone, though. He teased it as being Comic-Con footage, but you know O'Brien... he brought something even better to show. Check it out!

Remake Alert! THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT... Wait, What?!

$
0
0

Ok, even though I hate it when Hollywood remakes older movies, I can understand why they remake most of them. A lot of them are classic older films that people grew up with and enjoyed. What I don't understand is why anyone in the right mind would want to remake Ashton Kutcher's 2004 piece of shit The Butterfly Effect. That may seem like some kind of internet April Fools joke, but I assure you, it's not.

To make things a little more silly is the fact that the writer and director of the original film, Eric Bress, is writing the remake, so it's not like the script is going to be any better. There's no director attached yet, but I assume he wants to direct it as well.

The first film also starred Amy Smart, and followed a character "who had the ability to travel back in time and change the present by changing what he had done in his past — but found that changing several childhood traumas created unintended consequences."

This has got to be one of the dumbest ideas for a remake so far. Why would anyone throw their money away on this? Do any of you have the slightest bit of excitement that this movie is happening?

Gareth Edwards' GODZILLA Sequel Could Be DESTROY ALL MONSTERS!

$

Director Gareth Edwards' Godzilla reboot doesn't come out for another year, but that doesn't mean he's not already thinking about what he'd like to do for the sequel! While talking to our friends at Screen Rant, the director was asked which movie from the original series was his favorite, and this was his answer:

“With the exception of the 1954 original, I would say my second favorite film is Destroy All Monsters. I just love the idea of a monster island. Having a world with these creatures in it. I find that fascinating and would like to treat that realistically. I wouldn’t want to limit it to one other foe, I think it’s more fun to – this question will come back to haunt me if we ever do a sequel – but I think multiple creatures make better movies in terms of the image of Gojira.”

For those of you not familiar with Destroy All Monsters, it featured eleven different giant monsters throughout the film. It seems like that is the direction Edwards would want to take the sequel if he gets to do one. If he does go that route, then we're all in for a real treat! I hope he gets around to doing it! How do you feel about Destroy All Monsters being the inspiration for the sequel?

It looks like Edwards has a solid vision for this franchise reboot. The footage he showed at Comic-Con was epic. It definitely got me and the other 6,666 people in Hall H excited as hell to see more.

Godzilla stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, David Strathairn, Bryan Cranston, and Sally Hawkins. It hits theaters on May 16th, 2014!

Ben Foster to Play Lance Armstrong

3:10 to Yuma star Ben Foster is in talks to play Lance Armstrong in a biopic in development at Working Title. The film has no title yet, but it'll be directed by Stephen Frears, and "it will tell the story of Armstrong’s battle with testicular cancer in the mid-1990s to the unraveling of his image in the last several years due to the use of performance-enhancing drugs."

Foster is a very talented young actor who has had a lot of great roles. 3:10 to Yuma is one of my favorites. He was also in X-Men: The Last Stand and most recently starred in Ain’t Them Bodies Saints with Rooney Mara and Casey Affleck. He's also part of Peter Berg’s Navy SEAL film, Lone Survivor, whose cast also includes Mark Wahlberg, Eric Bana, and Taylor Kitsch

If Foster ends up being cast as Armstrong, I'm sure he'll do an great job portraying him. Do you think he'll be able to pull it off?

Wes Bentley and Topher Grace Cast in INTERSTELLAR

Wes Bentley and Topher Grace are the latest actors to join the impressive cast of Christopher Nolan's mind-bending sci-fi film, Interstellar. There's no information on who they will be playing, but apparently they will be in solid supporting roles.

The movie also stars Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Chastain, Michael Caine, Anne Hathaway, Mackenzie Foy, Ellen Burstyn, Bill Irwin, Timothee Chalamet, and Casey Affleck

The movie is based on the scientific theories developed by Cal Tech physicist Kip Thorne, and the story follows a group of explorers who travel through a wormhole. It has also previously been described as "a heroic interstellar voyage to the furthest reaches of our scientific understanding." Here's a little more recently revealed info on the story...

It takes place "in a time where crops are dying, food is scarce, governments and nations have collapsed, NASA is gone and the 20th Century is to blame. A mysterious rip in Space Time opens up and it is up to the remnants of the now extinct NASA organization to explore it and offer up a chance at salvation for Earth."

Interstellar is set to be released on November 7th, 2014.

Natalie Portman Set to Direct A TALE OF LOVE AND DARKNESS

$

Natalie Portman is set to make her directorial debut with a big screen adaptation of Amos Oz's memoir, A Tale of Love and Darkness. I guess it was only a matter of time before Portman jumped behind the camera and directed a film. It seems like something she was working her way up to, and now she's doing it. She was actually in the early stages of development on it back in 2007, but it ended up on the back burner while she worked on other things.

Oz gave an update on the film while talking to Reuters, saying that Portman is looking to visit Israel this fall to get ready, so that she can start shooting early next year in January. He went on to say,

“[Portman] read A Tale of Love and Darkness and asked me for the rights to make a film adaptation around five or six years ago. I agreed because of my high esteem for her work. She’s an excellent actor.”

He also says that he’s been helping develop script. Here's a description of the book:

Tragic, comic, and utterly honest, this extraordinary memoir is at once a great family saga and a magical self-portrait of a writer who witnessed the birth of a nation and lived through its turbulent history.
It is the story of a boy growing up in the war-torn Jerusalem of the forties and fifties, in a small apartment crowded with books in twelve languages and relatives speaking nearly as many. His mother and father, both wonderful people, were ill-suited to each other. When Oz was twelve and a half years old, his mother committed suicide, a tragedy that was to change his life. He leaves the constraints of the family and the community of dreamers, scholars, and failed businessmen and joins a kibbutz, changes his name, marries, has children, and finally becomes a writer as well as an active participant in the political life of Israel.
A story of clashing cultures and lives, of suffering and perseverance, of love and darkness.

I'm looking forward to seeing Portman's first film. Sounds like a pretty heavy drama, one that will make for a good movie.

McGregor and Paltrow Join Depp in MORTDECAI

Gwyenth Paltrow and Ewan McGregor are in talks to join Johnny Depp in director David Koepp's upcoming film Mortdecai.

Depp is playing Charles Mortdecai, "a debonair art dealer and part time rogue who must traverse the globe armed only with his good looks and special charm in a race to recover a stolen painting rumored to contain the code to a lost bank account filled with Nazi gold. He also has to juggle angry Russians, the British Mi5, his impossibly leggy wife and an international terrorist."

There's no word on whom Paltrow and McGregor will play in the film, but it seems like there are a lot of fun colorful characters. I imagine McGregor would be a British Mi5 agent, and Paltrow would be the "impossibly leggy wife."

The book was written in the 1970s and it could make for a really cool '70s style thriller. Depp is just coming off The Lone Ranger which wasn't his greatesttest moment, but the movie's failure isn't getting him down. He's still one of the most bankable actors in Hollywood.

Here's the description of the book:

Kyril Bonfiglioli's final novel follows the Hon. Charlie Mortdecai from adventure to misadventure via Jersey and Moscow to a final showdown in a Buckinghamshire bungalow of unparalleled hideousness. Tackling en route an unhealthy sprinkling of well-seasoned academics, a cryptic monk, an aristocratic Chief Constable, and more spies than you could shoehorn into a black stretch limo, Mordecai finds himself embroiled in another mission of international insecurity. Left unfinished at the time of the author's death, the celebrated satirist and parodist Craig Brown supplies the penultimate, plot-resolving chapter.

The film stars Hailee Steinfeld, Douglas Booth, Damian Lewis, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Ed Westwick, Stellan Skarsgaard, and Paul Giamatti.  Star Wars

Disney and Lucasfilm have revealed the official logo for their new Star Wars animated series, Star Wars Rebels. It comes along with a couple of really cool pieces of concept art that tease the style we can expect from the series. This was all unveiled during the "Star Wars Celebration Europe 2013," and we have some new details on the series for you as well. Check it out below thanks to StarWars.com, and let us know what you think!

Star Wars Rebels Executive Producer Dave Filoni pulled back the curtain on Lucasfilm's highly anticipated animated series for Star Wars Celebration Europe attendees today, discussing the huge influence of original Star Wars concept artist Ralph McQuarrie on the look and feel of the show, and revealing the series' unique logo and select designs.
Filoni talked at length about the use of McQuarrie art as a springboard for the series, showcasing many works from the original trilogy, including landscapes and characters, and detailing how they inform the visual identity of Star Wars Rebels.
For Star Wars Rebels, fans were given their first look at the Ghost, which will be the main character's ship and play a big part in the series, as well as a computer rendering of a very McQuarrie-esque Stormtrooper, the interior of a Star Destroyer, and more. The show's logo, a minimalist yet powerful design, is notable for its orange and black color scheme, which recalls the flight suit colors of Rebel pilots in the original Star Wars trilogy.
While unable to attend in person, Executive Producers Simon Kinberg and Greg Weisman shared their excitement for the series in a video message recorded specifically for Celebration attendees.
The series is set between the events of Episode III and IV -- an era spanning almost two decades never-before explored on-screen. It takes place in a time where the Empire is securing its grip on the galaxy and hunting down the last of the Jedi Knights as a fledgling rebellion against the Empire is taking shape.
Star Wars Rebels will be produced by Lucasfilm Animation, featuring many of the key talents that made Star Wars: The Clone Wars. It is scheduled to premiere in fall 2014 as a one-hour special telecast on Disney Channel, and will be followed by a series on Disney XD channels around the world.
