Paul Thomas Anderson - Mondo Movie Poster Art Series

$

I enjoy the films of Paul Thomas Anderson. The guy is an incredible storyteller, and his films are awkwardly beautiful. Mondo has revealed an amazing series of poster art for the films of the director, each one from a different artist. What would you say your favorite PTA movie is? Mine would have to be There Will Be Blood.

"Hard Eight" by Rich Kelly

I met Rich a few years ago when he was living in Chicago - he had only just started out on his phenomenal run of posters but he was already light years ahead of the pack. Looking through his sketchbook was a fucking revelation - I can honestly say that book was up there with Crumb, Ware and Jean in terms of sheer brilliance and natural ability. When this curatorial project was taking shape I knew I wanted non-Mondo regulars to round it out but Kelly was the obvious exception to the rule - his beautifully nuanced illustrative style was just the thing for capturing the gritty noir of Anderson's first film and I was over the moon when he agreed to take part. Even in the rough initial stages I could tell I made the right choice - another absolute stunner of a composition to add to his growing portfolio of classic pieces, the kid wins again...

"Boogie Nights" by Rockin' Jelly Bean

This poster was destined to be handled by RJB - anyone even marginally familiar with his style and subject matter would have to agree that he's been seemingly working up to this one for years. When I initially reached out (thanks to Pushead for the introduction) his auto-translated response boiled down to, "Rollergirl is my inspiration!" After that point all bets were off and the finished product is precisely what an RJB Boogie Nights poster should be - glistening, dynamic and damn near dripping off the paper.

"Magnolia" by Joao Raus

I'd been watching Joao's incredible progression from the moment he was tapped to follow cover artist James Jean on DC's Fables series - I don't know if anyone expected shoes that massive to be filled so effortlessly but here he was, voracious in his experimentation and so consistent in his victories as to thoroughly belie his years. Ruas has grown over the years into an absolute favorite of mine and I was thrilled that he was willing to take part in this series. His Magnolia poster (which is, I believe, his first screen print) is in my eyes a perfectly balanced illustration - hauntingly stark yet deceptively detailed and a palette over which to salivate. That he was able to distill such a dense narrative into these simple forms is truly something to wonder over - I feel absolutely cro-magnon in it's presence, more so than usual. And that title lettering - total perfection.

"Punch Drunk Love" by Jordan Crane

Just hearing the title of this movie made me think of Jordan - taken out of context it fits right in with his staggering output of comics, anthologies and children's books. I've stood awe-struck in front of a wall plastered with his amazing screen prints, have been reading his work since his groundbreaking Non anthology and, like a good portion of the population, still don't understand how the Hell he made the Maps and Legends dust jacket so it was not a huge leap to think this could be a winner. Knowing he's more than capable with a squeegee as well as with a forlorn narrative it was a relief to hear he was on board and the final poster is a fantastic addition to the series.

"There Will Be Blood" by Aaron Horkey

A few years ago, when a potential PTA director's series was first mentioned, I immediately had my hand up for this one. Everything about There Will Be Blood  is precisely my cup of tea - the time period, the sweeping desolation of the landscape, the soundtrack, Daniel Day-Lewis, etc. I didn't immediately come to the idea of an over-sized stock certificate but the more thought that went into it the more perfect it seemed as a visual embodiment of the film. I've also wanted to go all-in on something resembling a 19th century engraved note for quite some time so this seemed like as good an excuse as any. All told I spent over 100 hours on the illustration - it's still only about half as involved as I think it should be but after 6 weeks I felt like it needed to be put to bed. The aging of the paper is something I'm pretty proud of here - there are 3 layers of very subtle tone built up from the paper color to approximate a century old piece of acidic, weathered stock.

We've got an Iron Man 2 reunion for Jon Favreau's next film project Chef! The director has cast Scarlett Johansson to star alongside himself and Robert Downey Jr. in the film.

Favreau also wrote the script for the movie which "follows a man who loses his chef job and starts up a food truck to reclaim his artistic promise and estranged family at the same time."

According to the report, Johansson will play a character named Molly, a "restaurant manager and sometimes love interest of Favreau’s character, chef Carl Casper." Who wouldn't want to cast Johansson as their love interest? Favreau had this to say in a brief statement,

Scarlett is a tremendous talent and I’m honored to be collaborating with her again. I’m so fortunate to be working with such a fine ensemble.

The movie is set to start production on July 8th, and it also stars Sofia Vergara, John Leguizamo, and Bobby Cannavale. I'm sure this movie is going to turn out great! Make sure to watch Favreau's Made if you haven't already.

Hitler Is Back and He's Pissed off about IRON MAN 3

It's been awhile since we've seen Hitler rant and rave, but he's back and as pissed off as ever when it comes to how The Mandarin was portrayed in Iron Man 3. I personally didn't mind the Mandarin plot twist, but I know a lot of fans hated it. I can understand their point of view. I would have liked to see the real Mandarin as well, but I also have an open mind about these kinds of things. I think they pulled off the change pretty well. Now I'm going to ask you a very difficult question... do you agree with Hitler?

IRON MAN 3 - Concept Art for War Machine, Malibu Attack, and Mark 42

A few cool new pieces of concept art have surfaced for Iron Man 3! There's a couple of digital sculpts featuring the Mark 42 and an unused design for War Machine created by Ryan Meinerding and Phil Saunders. Then we've got some concept art featuring the epic Malibu mansion attack scene from the film that was done by concept artist Rob McKinnon who had this to say about the designs in an interview:

Initially, the helicopters were going to be helo-jacked Army Apache gunships. However, there was a pretty cool design opportunity here. So we decided to come up with gunships disguised as civilian news and tour copters. It was fun, but very challenging. These copters had to be armed to the teeth, but couldn't be exposed until the moment of a surprise attack.

So I came up with the concept that the cabin doors crack open like stabilizer wings exposing the mounted armament. I thought if they could pull this off, it would be a kick a$$ moment in the film.

I saw it in the trailer, and I teared up like a little girl with a skinned knee! There's nothing like watching a drawing or painting come to life.

I'm sure were going to see a lot more concept art from this film pop up over the next few months. I'm still seeing new concept art from The Avengers.

The STAR WARS Bet That Made Spielberg Millions

We all know George Lucas was stressing out about Star Wars while he was making it, and how he thought it was going to fail. What we didn't know is that fear led to a bet between he and Steven Spielberg. A bet that Spielberg has made millions of dollars off of over the years, and he's still collecting on it! I wish I would have been able to get in on that action! It all started when Lucas took a break from the post-production work on Star Wars to visit Spielberg on the set of Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

Here’s Spielberg’s account of how it all went down...

George came back from Star Wars a nervous wreck. He didn’t feel Star Wars came up to the vision he initially had. He felt he had just made this little kids’ movie. He came to Mobile, Alabama where I was shooting Close Encounters on this humongous set, and hung out with me for a couple of days.

He said, ‘Oh my God, your movie is going to be so much more successful than Star Wars. This is gonna be the biggest hit of all time’. He said, ‘You want to trade some points? I’ll give you two and a half per cent of Star Wars if you give me two and a half per cent of Close Encounters.’ I said, ‘Sure, I’ll gamble with that, great.’ Close Encounters made so much money and rescued Columbia from bankruptcy. It was the most money I ever made, but it was a meager success story. Star Wars was a phenomenon and I was the happy beneficiary of a couple of points from that movie which I am still seeing money on today.

How freakin' awesome is that?! You can head on over to Celebritynetworth to read the full story.

Great Trailer for Psychological Horror Film BERBERIAN SOUND STUDIO

If you like psychological horror films, this looks like a movie you're going to want to see! It's called Berberian Sound Studio, and it stars Tobey Jones as a sound technician tasked with creating the sound for a horror film, and while he's working on it things start to get creepy. The movie is set in the 70s, and it has a style and tone similar to films of that era, like the early work of Roman Polanski and Dario Argento. I love these kinds of films, and this one looks eerily fantastic.

In the 1970s, a British sound technician is brought to Italy to work on the sound effects for a gruesome horror film. His nightmarish task slowly takes over his psyche, driving him to confront his own past. Berberian Sound Studio is many things: an anti-horror film, a stylistic tour de force, and a dream of cinema. As such, it offers a kind of pleasure that is rare in films, while recreating in a highly original way the pleasures of Italian horror cinema.

The movie has already been released in the United Kingdom, but IFC Midnight is bringing the film to the United States next month. I can't wait to see it!

I don't know what it is about the internet and cats, but for some reason people love it. Some might argue it's the whole reason the internet was invented in the first place. Anyway, for you cat lovers that like The Avengers, artist Jenny Parks has re-imagined Earth's Mightiest Heroes as cats.

NOW YOU SEE ME - 8 Motion Character Posters

Here are eight new motion character posters from the magician heist film Now You See Me. I think they could have come up with something a little better for these motion posters. I mean if you're going to make motion posters, at least make them cool.

The Four Horsemen, a magic super-group led by the charismatic Atlas (Jesse Eisenberg), perform a pair of high-tech magic shows, first astonishing audiences by robbing a bank on another continent, and then exposing a white-collar criminal and funneling his millions into the audience members’ bank accounts.

FBI Special Agent Dylan (Mark Ruffalo) is determined to make the magicians pay for their crimes—and to stop them before they pull off what promises to be an even more audacious heist. But he’s forced to partner with Alma (Melanie Laurent), an Interpol detective about whom he is instantly suspicious. Out of desperation he turns to Thaddeus (Morgan Freeman), a famed magic debunker, who claims the bank heist was accomplished using disguises and video trickery. One thing Dylan and Alma agree on is that the Horsemen must have an outside point person, and that finding him (or her) is key to ending the magicians’ crime spree. Could it be Thaddeus? Or Alma? Or could it really be…magic?

As pressure mounts and the world awaits the Horsemen’s spectacular final trick, Dylan and Alma race to find an answer. But it soon becomes painfully clear that staying one step ahead of these masters of illusion is beyond the skills of any one man—or woman.

The Louis Leterrier directed film also stars Isla Fisher, Dave Franco, and Michael Caine and will be released in theaters May 31st.

TRANSFORMERS and VOLTRON - Cool Wizard World Poster Art

There's nothing like watching giant robots kicking ass! This is something a lot of us grew up on with classic shows such as Transformers, Voltron and various other TV series and anime. Those giant robots are now as popular as ever with movies being made that are inspired by them like Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim. We've already seen an adaptation of Transformers with more on the way, but hopefully one day they get around to making a badass Voltron flick.

We've got some really cool poster art to share with you today that comes from the Acid Free Gallery in Philadelphia, PA. They had these prints created for the upcoming Wizard World Philadelphia ComicCon taking place from May 30th to June 2nd.

The posters you see here were created by Laurent Durieux, Tom Whalen, Kevin Tong and Jesse Philips. We've got Voltron, Starscream, Soundwave, and the Dinobots!

The Dinobots piece above was created by Kevin Tong.

PACIFIC RIM - Giant Kaiju Skull

"What once evoked fear now inspires awe."

The latest image from Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim features a giant skull in a museum. How cool would it be to see something like this? If you got to choose you're apocalypse, would you rather see giant monsters rise up from the sea or flesh eating zombies?

The movie comes out on July 12th!

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes — a washed up former pilot and an untested trainee — who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Chris Pine Joins Joe Carnahan's Comedy Thriller STRETCH

Star Trek Into Darkness star Chris Pine is going to re-team with director Joe Carnahan for the comedy thriller Stretch. Before Pine became a big star, he worked with Carnahan on the action film Smokin' Aces. There's no word on whom Pine will play in the film, but hopefully it's a decent-sized role. The movie stars Patrick Wilson (Insidious) as "a down-on-his-luck chauffeur looking to relieve his debt by driving around a mysterious billionaire who drags him to hell and back."

I think Pine is a good actor. Aside from Star Trek, one of my favorite roles that he's played was Bo Barrett in Bottle Shock.

What's your favorite Pine movie role?

Clark Gregg Discusses Marvel's AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.

You've now seen the trailers and have been introduced to the characters of Joss Whedon's Agent's of S.H.I.E.L.D. It looks like it's going to be pretty damn fun TV series. The show's star Clark Gregg recently spoke to EW about the series, and how Agent Coulson fits into the epic mythology of the Marvel universe.

Agent Coulson represents the people who don’t have superpowers, the guys who actually can be killed — or at least seem to be and yet come back sometimes … Marvel has such a lock on how to do really incredibly visual effects and stunts that we’ve got stuff on our show that I just don’t think we’ve seen on TV before.

He then goes on to explain why we're going to love the show.

If you love The Avengers, if you love any of Joss Whedon’s work, you’re going to absolutely love the show. It’s about these people living in a super world dealing with being human. You see these superhero movies and you see the superheroes struggle but you don’t see how humans do in a world like that. That’s what will draw people in. It’s so human. And it’s so super and awesome still.

Gregg still won't confirm how Coulson will be coming back in the series, but he did say...

I thought they were pranking me a little bit because there was so much blood on the set of The Avengers, I kept waiting to see, are we going to shoot a version where [Loki] misses? And they didn’t, so I was really surprised to get that call and I wanted to make sure it didn’t do anything to undermine what we achieved there and when [writer-director Joss Whedon] explained the mystery and how they planned to deal with it, with Agent Coulson being around, I was very sold.

Regardless of how Coulson comes back, I'm sold on the series as well. To read up on all of our Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. news and watch the trailers, click here.

Terrifying Red-Band Trailer for V/H/S/2

Want to see a bloody and terrifying red-band trailer for V/H/S/2? If you clicked through, then of course you do! I saw this movie at Sundance. It was an amazing horror anthology! I liked the first V/H/S movie, but this sequel was so much better. Even if you didn't like the first movie, you will like this one. Just watch this new trailer! It's packed full of chaotic insanity! You can read my review for it here.

This anthology horror sequel has segments directed by Jason Eisener (Hobo With A Shotgun), Gareth Huw Evans (The Raid: Redemption) and Timo Tjahjanto (Macabre), Edúardo Sanchez and Gregg Hale (Blair Witch Project), and Adam Wingard (You’re Next). Then there's a wraparound segment directed by You’re Next writer Simon Barrett.

Inside a darkened house looms a column of TVs littered with VHS tapes, a pagan shrine to forgotten analog gods. The screens crackle and pop endlessly with monochrome vistas of static—white noise permeating the brain and fogging concentration. But you must fight the urge to relax: this is no mere movie night. Those obsolete spools contain more than just magnetic tape. They are imprinted with the very soul of evil.

From the demented minds that brought you last year’s V/H/S comes S-VHS, an all-new anthology of dread, madness, and gore. This follow-up ventures even further down the demented path blazed by its predecessor, discovering new and terrifying territory in the genre. This is modern horror at its most inventive, shrewdly subverting our expectations about viral videos in ways that are just as satisfying as they are sadistic. The result is the rarest of all tapes—a second generation with no loss of quality.

The movie will be available on VOD on June 6th and opens theatrically July 12th! The red-band trailer is NSFW.

Shia LaBeouf Cast in Psychological Thriller VILLAIN

Shia LaBeouf has been cast in a new psychological thriller called Villain, which is set to be directed by 28 Weeks Later director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo

The movie was written by Robocop remake scribe Josh Zetumer. Not much is known about the story, but we do know that it "follows two brothers who mysteriously re-connect in an unforgiving wilderness." There are so many different ways this story can go. The role of the other brother will be cast soon.

LaBeouf has been taking on several different roles recently. I was never a big fan of his until I saw Lawless. That film proved to me that the guy can be a great actor. It gave me a newfound respect for him, even though he's still kind of a nut.

Jake Gyllenhaal and Chris Pine to Join INTO THE WOODS Musical

Jake Gyllenhaal and Chris Pine are currently in discussions to join Johnny Depp and Meryl Streep in Disney’s feature film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical Into the Woods.

The movie will be directed Rob Marshall, and the story follows "a childless baker and his wife who attempt to lift a family curse by journeying into the woods to confront the witch that put the spell on them. Along the way, they encounter Rapunzel, Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk’s Jack, Little Red Riding Hood, and other classic fairy tale characters."

It's hard for me to imagine either Gyllenhaal or Pine singing a tune, but if they end up being cast in the film we'll see how that turns out.

According to the report, Streep will play the vain and charismatic Witch, and Depp will play "a hungry and sexy variation of a fairy tale wolf." Gyllenhaal and Pine would play the musical’s two main princes, "Cinderella’s Prince and Rapunzel’s Prince, brothers who are pompous and self-absorbed." Should be fun.

Trailer for the PACIFIC RIM Knockoff Movie ATLANTIC RIM

Of course, there was bound to be a ripoff film inspired by Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim. It's hilariously called Atlantic Rim, and it looks ridiculously awful in every way. Does anyone actually watch these knockoff films made by The Asylum? People must watch them. Otherwise, they wouldn't be able to keep making these terrible movies. Here's the short plot summary:

When giant monsters crawl out of the Atlantic Ocean and attack the Eastern Seaboard, the US Government is forced to trust A.I. robots to defend the country.

I imagine Warner Bros. will sue them, just like they did for their ripoff version of The Hobbit. I can't wait to not watch this movie.

Will any of you watch this? Do you enjoy watching these Asylum made movies? If so... why?

Sony Pictures Entertainment has announced that Rovio's Angry Birds movie will be released on July 1st, 2016. Rovio Entertainment is developing, producing, and financing the 3D animated film production itself, and it's being produced by John Cohen (Despicable Me) and David Maisel (Iron Man).

There's no word still on who will be directing or writing the film. There are also no details on what the film will be about, but if you've played Angry Birds, then you know what you're getting yourself into. Below, you'll find a press release with a few more details and a lot of people explaining how excited they are about making the movie and working with one another.

Hopefully they will be able to turn this into a decent, enjoyable movie.

ROVIO’S ANGRY BIRDS FEATURE FILM NESTS AT SONY PICTURES ENTERTAINMENT

Animated 3D Comedy Slated For July 1, 2016

CULVER CITY, Calif., May 15, 2013 – Sony Pictures Entertainment has won the exclusive worldwide distribution rights to the eagerly anticipated Angry Birds animated film, making it one of the most high-profile deals of the year. The 3D film is being developed, produced, and financed by Rovio Entertainment and will be released worldwide by Sony Pictures on July 1, 2016. Several major studios pursued the global film rights in recent weeks, with Sony Pictures Entertainment emerging as the winner.

Michael Lynton, Chairman & CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment, Amy Pascal, Co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Mikael Hed, CEO of Rovio Entertainment jointly announced their partnership today. John Cohen and David Maisel – producer of Despicable Me and executive producer of Iron Man, respectively – are both on board for the new Angry Birds feature film. Cohen will serve as producer and Maisel is executive producer.

Commenting on the announcement, Mikael Hed said, “Sony impressed us with their great attitude, determination, and professionalism. They convinced us that we have found the right partners and team to help us market and distribute our first motion picture. Michael, Amy, Jeff Blake, Sony’s marketing and distribution head, and their teams will be the best possible collaborators as we get set to take our franchise to the next level.”

Lynton and Pascal said, “Every studio in town would love to add Angry Birds to their slate. There are few titles out there that bring this kind of excitement, brand awareness and built-in audience to the table. We’re thrilled to be distributing this film and we hope this is just the beginning of what will be a long relationship with Rovio as we look for ways to work on future projects together.”

David Maisel and John Cohen said, “We are very excited to join with Sony Pictures in presenting this movie to the world in 2016 and we will have many more announcements as we begin production in the coming months.”

Angry Birds is one of the world’s biggest entertainment franchises, starting in 2009 with the original mobile game that remains the number one paid app of all time. Angry Birds has expanded rapidly into entertainment, publishing, and licensing to become a beloved international brand.

Angry Birds has been praised for its great value and simple, casual gameplay. Players use a slingshot to launch birds at green pigs in an attempt to get their eggs back, with the game setting the model for what is possible in terms of game development and commercial success. To date, the Angry Birds and Bad Piggies games have been downloaded more than 1.7 billion times across platforms and versions.

The upcoming movie marks Rovio Entertainment’s first foray into feature films, although fans have already been introduced to the Angry Birds world with the weekly Angry Birds Toons animated series. Rovio launched the series in March through its Angry Birds apps as well as on select video-on-demand channel providers, Smart TVs, connected devices, and on select TV networks around the world. Paving the way for a full-length feature film, Angry Birds Toons has been a massive success for Rovio clocking in over 150 million views from the Angry Birds apps alone within the first six weeks.

While known for distributing world renowned motion picture franchises such as Spider-Man, Sony Pictures has been building a strong reputation in contemporary animation through its house production unit, Sony Pictures Animation, and hit films including Hotel Transylvania, The Smurfs, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Surf’s Up, Open Season, and Aardman’s Arthur Christmas and The Pirates! Band of Misfits.
