Hey Doctor Who fans! If you haven't heard yet, the BBC has announced  that the second half of Doctor Who season seven is set to return on Saturday, March 30th, 2013! This is the first of eight episodes that will finish off the season. The next day Game of Thrones Season 3 premieres on HBO, so that's going to be a great weekend of TV! 2013 is going to be a great year for The Doctor, and I'm excited to see what adventures he has next! I'm especially looking forward to seeing the episode that Neil Gaiman wrote involving the return of the Cybermen. I'm also looking forward to seeing what his new companion Clara Oswin Oswald (Jenna-Louise Coleman) brings to the story. Is there any episode you're particularly excited to see?

Great Photo of Taylor Swift as Rapunzel in Live-Action TANGLED

I guess if Disney ever were to really make a live-action Tangled movie, Taylor Swift would be a great choice to take on the role. She looks great as Rapunzel. The photo is part of Disney’s incredibly cool Dreams portrait series that features live reenactments of several of Walt Disney Animated classic characters using some of Hollywood’s hottest talent. The photos come from photographer Annie Leibovitz. You check out some more Disney photos here and here

OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL Sneak Peek with New Footage

Disney has released a one-minute international sneak peek for Oz: The Great and Powerful, and it's loaded with great new footage that gives us a little more information on the witches in the story played by Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams, and Mila Kunis. It looks like Sam Raimi has made a great looking fantasy adventure film. As a fan of the stories of Oz, I'm looking forward to seeing Raimi's vision of this world come to life.

Oz is scheduled to open in theaters on March 8th.

When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he's hit the jackpot -- fame and fortune are his for the taking -- that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone's been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity -- and even a bit of wizardry -- Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.

MAD MEN Season 6 Will Premiere in April!

Mad Men will finally return for its sixth season on April 7th, 2013! AMC made the announcement recently, also stating the the first episode will be a two hour movie premiere written by Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner and directed by Scott Hornbacher. The second episode of the season was directed by series star Jon Hamm

I love watching this show, and I can't wait to see where the characters are headed. The last time we saw them, Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce was recovering from Lane Pryce’s suicide, Peggy Olson joined a rival agency, Roger Sterling was tripping out, and Draper was thinking about getting it on with two pretty young ladies.

When talking to the New York TimesWeiner had this to say about the next season,

It will advance in time, as it does… I can’t say how much or how little. We’re coming off a period in Don’s life where he’s trying to normalize, and trying to have this relationship – a real relationship with this woman that he fell in love with. She expressed her desires and that was a surprise for him. On this show, it’s a very rich, full orchestra, and we like to follow what is the next stage in these people’s lives.

Sundance '13 Review: PRINCE AVALANCHE w/ Paul Rudd & Emile Hirsch

Director/Screenwriter: David Gordon Green

Cast: Paul Rudd, Emile Hirsch, Lance LeGault, Joyce Payne

Soundtrack: Explosions in the Sky, David Wingo

Synopsis: An odd couple of sorts, meditative and stern Alvin and his girlfriend’s brother, Lance, dopey and insecure, leave the city behind to spend the summer in solitude repainting traffic lines down the center of a country highway ravaged by wildfire. As they sink into their job in the remarkable landscape, they learn more than they want to about each other and their own limitations. An unlikely friendship develops through humor and nasty exchanges, leading to surprising affection.

Story and Direction

After helming a couple of big-budget studio comedies, David Gordon Green (Pineapple Express, Your Highness) returns to Sundance with a smaller and sweeter comedy gem. This was an unconventional film all around for the writer/director who started with the title - which bares no meaning, he just thought it sounded cool - and was then turned onto the Icelandic film Either Way, which he adapted into what became Prince Avalanche. Even with some fairly high profile actors, the production remained mostly under wraps until they announced that it would be premiering at Sundance.

In order to set up the daily routine of Alvin (Rudd) and Lance (Hirsch), the opening of the movie has almost no dialogue. The slower paced intro also has these really great, long shots of this Texas forest that has been absolutely ravaged by wildfire, that give you an idea of just how secluded these characters are. Setting the story in 1987, before the days of Skype and smart phones, also served to keep the characters truly disconnected from the rest of civilization. We never leave this forest, even when the characters do. We are only clued into their relationships and lives outside of work from what they tell each other. This makes for some hilarious conversations between Rudd and Hirsch, and it always has you questioning how truthful they are being with each other, and more importantly with themselves.

Hirsch and Rudd aren't your typical comedic due, but it's a dynamic that was executed superbly in the way Gordon Green tailored the roles for these actors, and how much freedom they were given to direct themselves at times and really explore their characters and push their performances.

Performances

Paul Rudd is always solid and gives a strong turn as Alvin, a lover of the outdoors who enjoys the alone time that his job gives him. Rudd's impeccable delivery always leaves you wondering which lines were improvised and which were scripted. Hirsch commented in the Q&A after the screening that while watching the film even he couldn't distinguish which lines that Rudd had come up with. He's just that "smooth."

In one of the best roles of his career, Emile Hirsch plays Lance, a cocky slacker who is going stir crazy without females to interact with. Hirsch is mostly known for his dramatic work, and his comedic talent has really been underrated, or at least he hasn't been given enough opportunity to show off that part of his range. He does an absolutely fantastic job in this film, and owns some of the most memorable moments. You can almost picture Green putting frequent collaborator Danny McBride in this role, but Hirsch's boyish looks and earnest charm is just what this character needed to stay likable.

Lance LeGault, who sadly passed away shortly after production wrapped, gives the most gut-busting performance in the film. In the few appearances he makes as a hospitable yet brutally frank truck driver, he gets the biggest laughs from the audience.

Similar To

This is a much different and tamer comedy than we've been used to lately from Green. It's mostly kid friendly--there's surprisingly no profanity in the film aside from a little innuendo. Rudd's straightlaced contemplative character somewhat forced to babysit Hirsch as the fun-loving slacker is akin to the David Spade/ Chris Farley type relationships from Tommy Boy and Black Sheep.

Chances You'll See It in Theaters

This isn't as marketable as Green's more recent offerings, but with the stellar duo of Rudd and Hirsch headlining the pic, it should at the very least get a limited theatrical release.

Disney Easter Egg Found in EMPIRE STRIKES BACK

After 33 years, an awesome Disney Easter Egg has been found in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back! I've never seen this before, but as you can see in the screenshots Mickey Mouse can be seen in the background while Luke Skywalker is fighting Darth Vader. What makes this find even more awesome is that Disney now owns the Star Wars franchise. I guess it was always meant to be. George Lucas has always been a fan of Disney, and it's really cool that he threw this in here. The question is... was it included in the original cut, or was it added later in one of his many updated re-releases?

Thanks to the Star Wars Blog for pointing this out! Have you ever noticed this before?

New International Trailer for Steven Soderbergh’s SIDE EFFECTS

Here's a new international trailer for Steven Soderbergh's Side Effects. This is supposed to be his last film, but we'll just see about that. I'm still a little confused as to why he would make this his last movie, but it is what it is. It looks like it will be a decent movie. I've enjoyed most of his films, but I'm not really all that excited about it. The thriller stars Rooney Mara, Jude Law, Channing Tatum, and Catherine Zeta-Jones. The movie hits theaters on February 8th. Are you excited about the movie?

SIDE EFFECTS is a provocative thriller about Emily and Martin (Rooney Mara and Channing Tatum), a successful New York couple whose world unravels when a new drug prescribed by Emily’s psychiatrist (Jude Law)—intended to treat anxiety—has unexpected side effects.

Lindelof and Bird Tease 1952 Sci-Fi Disney Project with Mysterious Box

As you all know by now Damon Lindelof, Brad Bird, and George Clooney are developing an intriguing sci-fi alien invasion film for Disney under the name 1952. A few little details here and there have hit the internet, but for most of it we don't know what's true or not. Two things we know for sure are that the story centers on aliens and that the creative team is looking to recapture the spirit of Steven Spielberg's classic movie, Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The second thing was confirmed by Lindelof and Bird when they tweeted out these two photos of a box marked 1952, and the contents of that box. For those of you who don't remember the story behind the box, here it is...

When Lindelof had a meeting to discuss the project with Disney’s head of production, Sean Bailey, the Disney exec arranged for Lindelof to be given access to one of the studio's odder curiosities: a banker’s box of files and documents that had been left moldering in Walt Disney’s personal development lab, WED Enterprises, which later became the studio’s vaunted Imagineering department. The box was originally labeled with the title of the studio’s 1965 comedy That Darn Cat!, which had been crossed out and in its place was written '1952.' Inside was a random-at-first-glance collection of documents and primary source materials that, when looked at all together, indicated that someone had been working on a project (movie? theme park ride?) about alien contact.

So it looks as if the whole box story is true, which is pretty damn cool! Lindeloff added a small note with the photos that simply says "The Box," and Bird's note said "Box Open." Now I'm even more excited to see what's being planned for the film! This is going to be a really fun movie to follow over the next couple of years.

The question is... what do the contents of the box mean? Maybe Walt Disney had hard evidence that UFOs actually existed. The box includes photos of Walt Disney and a 1928 issue of Amazing Stories, that includes cover art from Frank Paul. Who know what it all means but it's intriguging, and whatever kind of game these guys are playing, I want to play.

In the clip the villain makes a guest appearance on The Dave Endochrine Show, with the host voiced by Conan O'Brien. The movie comes out on January 29th, and I've heard from people that have already seen it that it's better than Part 1, so that should give you fans something to look forward to!

With Gotham City back under his watchful eye, and accompanied by able sidekick Robin, Batman continues to battle crime – but his resurgence awakens a far worse evil at Arkham Asylum: The Joker. In the meantime, Superman has been dispatched by the President to halt Batman’s unsanctioned reign by whatever means necessary. Between the Joker’s diabolical scheme to drag Batmanto the darkest levels of insanity, and the Man of Steel’s seemingly invincible physical presence, the Dark Knight must confront adversaries and allies simultaneously while maintaining the peace in Gotham City.

Primetime television stars Michael Emerson (Person of Interest, Lost) and Mark Valley (Human Target, Fringe) join the voice cast as The Joker and Superman, respectively; and popular talk show host Conan O’Brien gives voice to animated talk show host Dave Endochrine. IRON MAN 3 - Kevin Feige Talks About Jon Favreau's Key Role

Jon Favreau may not be directing Iron Man 3, but he will still have a significant role in the film. Marvel's Kevin Feige reveals it will be "by far the biggest part" that Favreau's character has had in the franchise, and that "he's just great in this." Here is what Feige had to say in an interview with MTV News:

Feige states that the character will have a bigger part in Iron Man 3, as well as more of a connection to Stark and that he steals some "amazing" scenes. "When you put Jon in front of the camera, he tends to steal every scene he's in, just by reading the scripted lines, but also by going off-book and ad-libbing with the best of them. He's got some amazing scenes that he steals. But there's a deeper storyline for Happy in this one, and more of a connection with Tony. The movie goes into why they've been friends for all these years." He also confirmed that Favreau shot his scenes "very early in production". "It was wonderful for Shane, because he had Favreau right there, sitting next to him," says Feige. "Shane was not shy about going over and asking Jon questions, whether it was as simple as, 'How do I navigate this giant green screen?' Or if it was a question about the character and the franchise. Jon is incredibly gracious and incredibly conscious with other filmmakers to not step on their toes. At the same time, he gives advice and input when he's asked."

Finally, Feige calls Favreau's involvement a pleasure, and says that the third Iron Man feels like a natural progression of the series' storyline. "It's been a pleasure having Favreau involved. It feels like a natural evolution and a natural continuation of the storyline, even behind-the-scenes, in the making of the movie. It's not a right turn from where we started.

Favreau is great at adding some comedic moments, so it is no surprise he steals some of the scenes. Iron Man 3 stars Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale, Jon Favreau, and Sir Ben Kingsley. It arrives in theaters on May 3.

JUSTICE LEAGUE Movie - Final 5 That Made the Cut

$

This news really isn't going to blow your mind because it basically tell us what most of us already know. I think it's fairly obvious what characters will end up in the Justice League movie, but our friends at Latino-Review say that the five members of the team are...

Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman and The Flash. Like I said this isn't earth shattering news, the Justice League wouldn't be the Justice League without these characters. The site goes on to say that Martian Manhunter, Aquaman, and Hawkman might also be included.

This actually contradicts a previous report from about a month ago, that gives us a breakdown of the characters that would be in the film, and the roles they play in the story. For example, the previous report says that Aquaman actually has a key role in the movie. Both sites that reported this news have a good reputation for getting these kinds of things right. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out, and what characters do actually end up in the film.

Justice League will be going up against The Avengers 2 in 2015. I'm excited for both movies, but I'm sure The Avengers is going to end up being the much better, more successful film.

Review: THE CAVE – Plenty of Wit and Backtracking

$

I awaited Ron Gilbert’s The Cave with childlike glee. Adventure games have never really been my thing, but they were a staple in my adolescent gaming. That genre use to be everywhere and thanks to people like Ron Gilbert and friends at Double Fine (though Gilbert was not always with them), we had quality, humorous games coming down the pipe for many years. That’s still the case, but in a different manner these days. Double Fine’s recent titles are looked at like something to be revered rather than pioneers in the gaming industry. They are now the grandfathers of gaming who continue to put out quality products year after year. Sure, they are smaller now, but there is something truly special about the company.

The Cave is a Double Fine game created by Ron Gilbert. Gilbert is the man behind such games as Maniac Mansion and The Secret of Monkey Island. Most people assume that Tim Schafer is behind every Double Fine game, but this time it’s all Ron Gilbert. He has said that this was an idea he had thirty years ago, which adds a certain level of expectation when coming into this game. Taking out the point-and-click mechanics, Gilbert combined the use of puzzle solving with characters who interacted directly with the environment.

Gameplay

The Cave opens with you pressing “start” and The Cave, who is a character in the game, narrates the opening. The camera pans down to seven characters who all have different back stories. You are required to pick three characters, and each has unique special power. Your choices of characters are: the monk, adventurer, hillbilly, scientist, time traveler, knight, and the twins. After you have picked the characters you want, you make your way through the ever-changing cave as it adapts to those who you have picked. There are about six big puzzles to solve and three of those depend on who is in your party. Each character has a story to tell about their morals and how far they will go in order to fulfill their selfish wishes.

The puzzles require you to find items in the area and either put them in the right place again, or you have to combine them with elements in the level. The more interesting puzzles occur when you have to use all three characters at once in order to get past a certain part. They sometimes remind me of those co-op parts in LittleBigPlanet but on a much harder scale. The problems I had with the game come down to the puzzles, but I will get to that later.

Graphics

The game is a joy to look at. Every level is different than the last and it looks like some demented cartoon that I feel I would watch as a kid (or now, even). The levels that are designed specifically for a character are seamlessly intertwined with the rest of the game. The backgrounds are filled with spooky images of mountaintops or something related to the aesthetic of the current level. Each section is a joy to look at and the clever writing makes it all the more enjoyable with its witty, comic sense of style.

Sound

A large portion of the game is narrated by The Cave. This voice is a guide through the cave’s ever changing layout. He (it sounds like a “he” even if you can’t verify it) utilizes these three characters to tell his own version of morality. The Cave is a funny individual and every time his voice surfaces, it always made me smile if not laugh. Other than The Cave talking your ear off, the characters who you interact within the levels are just as wonderfully written. There is a miner who had me busting a gut every time I had to go near him. Nothing stands out in terms of ambiance or music with the game. Anything that had to do with sound was leaning mostly on those characters lines.

Issues

The biggest gripe, or maybe the only gripe I had with the game, is that the puzzles lose their steam about an hour in. The Cave is not a long experience. You can play through it in about 3-4 hours. This is because you are supposed to replay it with different characters in order to see the other scenarios and stories. The problem is the puzzles fall in the same mode of: go across the level, find out that you need an item, get the item, bring it back, and then realize that you have to bring it back to the area where you found it. So much time was spent backtracking and not enjoying the design of the levels. I was exhausted at numerous points because the game kept making me tread through the same motions over and over again. It feels as if the level design was made so that you had to go out of your way every time you needed to get something done. This is a shame because the levels that are designed around the characters have some great writing in them. Take for instance the Twins – you spend the time in their house (or the one The Cave created) trying to kill their parents. It’s disturbing but extremely funny how you go about doing it. It's quite the bummer that you spend all that time going to the top of the house and then back to the bottom of the house over and over again.

All of this backtracking doesn’t let the rest of the game shine. The Cave is a twisted story of morality and how far people will go in order to be “happy.” This is surrounded with some dark humor that sold me from the start. The levels that cater to specific character utilize their special powers really well, and they each tell an interesting story. I just don’t think this is Gilbert’s best, but his worst is still pretty damn fun.

Overall : 3/5

The Cave contains clever writing and some interesting puzzle scenarios. Unfortunately the game is weighed down by backtracking. What could’ve been a perfect experience is ruined by a sense of exhaustion for the player. The puzzles are clever enough for a playthrough, but I don’t see the need to revisit this one any time soon.

Tony Scott's 1986 action drama Top Gun is coming back to the big screen in IMAX 3D on February 8th for six-days, and today Paramount Pictures has released a new trailer for it. I've never seen Top Gun on on the big screen, so this will be a cool experience for me.

The movie stars Tom Cruise, Kelly McGillis, Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards, Tom Skerritt, and Michael Ironside. It tells the story of an elite group of pilots competing to be the best in their class.

The movie was re-mastered for the big screen from the original high resolution negative scans and converted to 3D under the supervision of the film's late director, Tony Scott.

THE AVENGERS - Alternate Iron Man and Helicarrier Concept Art

Some alternate concept art for The Avengers' Helicarrier and Iron Man Mark VII Armor has arrived online from artist Phil Saunders. The Avengers is such an awesome movie, so you can imagine that this concept art is equally cool.

Here is Saunders' description and designs of the Mark VII Armor:

Below are the initial 3 sketches I did early on before we knew what the Mk 7 should be. The first was actually a revision of a design I had been thinking of initially for Iron Man 2 before ultimately choosing another project. It was a lighter, more streamlined version of what had come before, trying to integrate a flowing theme wrapping around the "RT" on the chest and mirroring that fast line through the body. This was more of the evolutionary design, and ultimately was approved pretty much immediately as a starting point for the Mk 7.

"The next design was playing around with the stance of the suit toward more of a brawler attitude, somewhat beefier and less aircraft-like."

"Lastly was a more extreme departure, trying to create a very different silhouette, sort of the Stark Industries answer to a more heavily militarized suit like War Machine, but drawing from Air Force form language instead of Army."

Below are Saunders' designs and descriptions of the Helicarrier:

"Before working on the Mk 7 suit with the Visual Development team, I was initially brought into the Art Department to work on the Helicarrier. While ultimately the Production Designer James Chinlund's direction was pursued by Nathan Schroeder to the version you see on screen, I was tasked with providing some alternative approaches. Below is a sampling of some initial sketches pursuing a combination of naval and stealth-inspired forms. In a more radical departure from the concept of 'Heli-' carrier I was exploring some form of vertical jet engine clusters to lift the massive hull rather than the traditional ducted fans."

Here is a video discussing the designs of the Helicarrier:

Joey Paur and Elijah Reyes review S-VHS.

Make sure to read Joey's written review.

Directors: Simon Barrett, Adam Wingard, Edúardo Sanchez, Gregg Hale, Timo Tjahjanto, Gareth Huw Evans, and Jason Eisener

Screenwriters: Simon Barrett, Jamie Nash, Timo Tjahjanto and Gareth Huw Evans, John Davies and Jason Eisener

Cast: Adam Wingard, Lawrence Levine, L. C. Holt, Kelsy Abbott, Hannah Hughes

Official Synopsis: Inside a darkened house looms a column of TVs littered with VHS tapes, a pagan shrine to forgotten analog gods. The screens crackle and pop endlessly with monochrome vistas of static—white noise permeating the brain and fogging concentration. But you must fight the urge to relax: this is no mere movie night. Those obsolete spools contain more than just magnetic tape. They are imprinted with the very soul of evil.

From the demented minds that brought you last year’s V/H/S comes S-VHS, an all-new anthology of dread, madness, and gore. This follow-up ventures even further down the demented path blazed by its predecessor, discovering new and terrifying territory in the genre. This is modern horror at its most inventive, shrewdly subverting our expectations about viral videos in ways that are just as satisfying as they are sadistic. The result is the rarest of all tapes—a second generation with no loss of quality.

Hot Toys Reveals IRON MAN 3 War Machine Bust!

You know, we actually haven't seen any photos of War Machine in Iron Man 3 yet. We've seen the Iron Patriot makeover it got, but not the classic War Machine look. Thanks to Hot Toys, here's our first look!

Hot Toys is proud to present the 1/4th scale War Machine Limited Edition Collectible Bust from one of the most anticipating blockbusters of the year - Iron Man 3 movie. It is specially produced based on the image of the War Machine character in the movie, which is presented in fine sculpture, highlighting the light-up functions and rotatable shoulder-mounted gatling gun.

To be honest, I like this War Machine look over what I've seen of Iron Patriot; it just has a more badass feel to it. I'm sure we'll see it pop up in a future trailer... maybe during the Super Bowl?

THE WOLVERINE - James Mangold Discusses Dark Tone and More

$

Director James Mangold recently talked to MTV about his highly anticipated new film, The Wolverine. Like many of you, I'm hoping that this ends up being the best vision of Wolverine so far. Mangold discusses the tone of the film revealing they'll be going "a little darker and a little deeper,"  the Japanese setting and influence, and when we can expect to see the first trailer of the film.

On Japanese influence:

There is a significant amount of Japanese spoken in the movie, and the cast is almost entirely Japanese. So there is this wonderful sense of cross-pollination between a very Western character and a far Eastern culture, and I think it's very cool and something we haven't seen so far. I think there is a lot of ways that Japanese film, Japanese fighting, Japanese martial arts have had an effect on this movie. And certainly the movie is dripping with Japanese tradition both cinematically, fighting-wise and philosophically as well.

On Logan's new haircut and separation from the previous movies:

We've given Logan a new haircut, a shorter haircut that I think is a more handsome haircut. The wonderful opportunity for me with this film is that 90 percent of it takes place in Japan, and even though other elements remain constant from the other pictures, namely Hugh Jackman, we kind of got our chance to reboot the tone and go a little darker and a little deeper than they've gone before with this character. That was exciting for me.

On Berserker rage and the violence:

The whole point is not about violence or rating; it's about intensity. I wanted to make a film that in a way captures the intensity of his character. One of the things that has always been a feature of Wolverine in the comics is that he has a berserker rage, that he has anger and some of his abilities are driven by something more primal. Honestly, to get really pissed off — not cute pissed off, not quippy pissed off, not funny pissed off or cigar-chomping pissed off, just pissed off — that can then help drive the fighting, drive the combat. That is interesting for me and then for the character, some of the jet fuel underneath some of the combat in the film.

That all sounds pretty awesome, but I'm sure you're all wondering when we're going to see a trailer that gives us our first real taste of what this movie is going to be like! It sounds like when it is released it's going to just tease us.

I think you always want to put your best foot forward. For me, I'm not the marketing department of Fox, but for my own tastes, less is more. You have a character that's a bit of a given, you know this guy. Hugh is so good in this role. My point of view is 'save as much as you can,' but we will be lifting our skirt and offering a peek or two, certainly in the months to come.

The Wolverine stars Hugh Jackman, Will Yun Lee, Khodchenkova, Hiroyuki Sanada, Hal Yamanouchi, Tao Okamoto, Rila Fukushima, and Brian Tee. It's set to hit theaters on July 26th, 2013, and here's the synopsis...
