Here's the first trailer for the Coen Brother's next film Inside Llewyn Davis, which stars Oscar Isaac as Llewyn Davis, a struggling folk singer trying to make it as a musician, traveling the country during the genre's 1960s heyday in New York CityCarey Mulligan plays his love interest in the story. It also stars Justin Timberlake and John Goodman.

I'm a huge fan of the Coen Brothers' movies, and this one looks like it's going to make a great addition to their collection. Check out the trailer, and let us know what you think!

All Six Bonds Will Appear On Stage At The Oscars

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Bond it has been confirmed that all six Bond actors will appear on stage during the Oscars ceremony. This will supposedly take place during Adele's performance of her award winning theme for the latest installment, "Skyfall." While it is awesome to celebrate 50 years with an appearance of Sean Connery, Timothy Dalton, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig, I would've much rather seen it celebrated with a best picture nomination for Skyfall. Either way, this is sure to be a treat for fans of 007.

Sundance '13 Review: Dermot Mulroney Takes A Surreal Road Trip in THE RAMBLER

The Rambler

Writer/Director: Calvin Lee Reeder

Cast: Dermot Mulroney, Lindsay Pulsipher, Natasha Lyonne, James Cady

Official Synopsis: Upon release from prison, a solitary man known only as “the Rambler” embarks on a mysterious journey en route to reconnecting with his long-lost brother. Traversing treacherous back roads, lost highways, and isolated small towns, he unearths a multitude of bizarre and wickedly depraved slices of Americana.

Performances

Dermot Mulroney anchors the film as the wandering lead character, and he fits perfectly in Reeder's strange cinematic world. Though he's been acting in films since the late 80s, he's rarely played a lead part; that pressure doesn't seem to be an issue for him here, since his performance is one of the film's highlights. Lindsay Pulsipher plays a hypnotic love interest who may or may not actually exist, and she's worked with Reeder enough times to be comfortable acting in his unique vision.

Story and Direction

Unlike a lot of films at this festival, The Rambler doesn't require amazing performances to get by. Instead, it's a showcase for Reeder to hone his craft and shape his unique filmmaking voice. Donning a cowboy hat, dark shades, and carrying a guitar case, The Rambler hitchhikes his way across the country and comes across some truly weird situations. He experiences surreal hallucinations, a mad scientist who attempts to read people's dreams with his new invention, a cab driver who likes having sex with injured car crash victims...and that's just the tip of the iceberg. But with as "out there" as all of that sounds, this movie is actually far better (and far more comprehensible) than Reeder's last film The Oregonian, which I called the strangest movie I'd ever seen.

Reeder's dreamlike style shines through here, but at least this one has a narrative throughline that you can follow. His red and green lighting, discordant musical choices, and wonderful use of sound effects all come together to create a world that is unsettling, disturbing, and frightening. The Rambler will definitely be too much for many viewers, but for fans of surrealist cinema or just folks who are a bit open-minded when it comes to traditional structures, this movie will grab you from the opening moments and transport you to a place unlike any you've ever been. Reeder is emerging as one of the most talented and important filmmakers in this genre, and I'm glad that The Rambler was a marked improvement over his last movie. Even if these movies aren't my particular jam, I'm happy that there is a writer/director out there that is able to get an unconvenational vision on the screen, regardless of how twisted and depraved the final product may be.

Similar To

It's a more streamlined story than The Oregonian, but most of you likely haven't seen that movie. Though I don't think Reeder particularly likes being compared to David Lynch, that's really the most mainstream example that I can point to in order to give you an idea of what sort of film this is. The Rambler feels as if Lynch directed a modern western, with a Southern twist and a tinge of science fiction.

Chances You'll See It In Theaters

If you'd like to take a mind trip, Anchor Bay Films just bought rights for theatrical, home entertainment, television and digital distribution for The Rambler, but no release date has been set yet.

First Clip from jOBS Featuring Ashton Kutcher

We've all been wondering what it's going to be like to see Ashton Kutcher play Steve Jobs. Well, here's our first look at him in the role, along with Josh Gad as Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. In the clip Jobs is trying to convince Wozniak that he thinks people would be interested in buying a personal computer. My first impression of the clip reminds me of a made for TV movie.

I will be seeing the film tomorrow at Sundance, we'll let you know how good or bad it is after we see it. In the meantime, here's the clip!

The movie was directed by Joshua Michael Stern (Swing Vote) and also stars Ahna O’Reilly as Jobs’ girlfriend Chris-Ann Brennan; Lukas Haas as Apple employee DanielKottke; Dermot Mulroney as former Apple CEO Mike Markkula; and Matthew Modine as former Apple CEO John Sculley. It will be released in April of 2013. Here's the synopsis...

The film covers Jobs from his early years as an impressionable youth and wayward hippie, through his initial successes and infamous ousting, to his storybook return and ultimate triumphs as a man who set out to change the world and did just that.

jOBS chronicles the 30 most defining years of Steve Jobs’ life, as seen through his, colleagues’, and friends’ eyes. Dark, honest, and uncompromising, jOBS plunges into the depths of his character, creating an intense dialogue-driven story that is as much a sweeping epic as it is an immensely personal portrait of Steve Jobs’ life.

A rousing narrative of this business and tech icon, jOBS pulls no punches and does not speculate, telling only the candid and captivating account of the life of Steven Paul Jobs.

Stanley Kubrick's Original Hopeful Ending to THE SHINING Revealed

$

Stanley Kubrick's The Shining is one of my favorite horror films of all time, and most hardcore fans of the movie know that Kubrick had another ending for the film that he cut out at the last minute after the movie had opened up in limited theaters. There was two minutes of footage showing that Danny and Wendy were going to be alright were cut from the film.

The filmmaker sent assistants out to theaters and ordered the projectionists to send all the reels back to Warner Bros. studio to make sure none of the cuts of the original version would remain in existence, they were all destroyed. As far as we know the footage is lost, but you never know, one may have survived. There is a photo and now thanks to Pixar director and Shining fan Lee Unkrich, we have that part of the script for you to read!

The scene picks up after the crazy events at the Overlook Hotel. Between the shot of Jack frozen in the snow and the long lobby shot that ends on the July 4th, 1921 framed photo. Mr. Ullman is in a hospital with Wendy and he tells her that Jack Torrance's body was never found. Diane Johnson helped write the screenplay for the film with Kubrick, and she said that he planned to use this more hopeful ending to the movie. She explains via The Overlook Hotel:

Kubrick had filmed a final scene that was cut, where Wendy and Danny are recovering from the shock in a hospital and where Ullman visits them. Kubrick felt that we should see them in the hospital so we would know that they were all right. He had a soft spot for Wendy and Danny and thought that, at the end of a horror film, the audience should be reassured that everything was back to normal.

I loved the ending we ended up getting, but I don't think the addition of this deleted scene would have hurt the film, or the story. Read the four pages of how that scene plays out below, and tell us what you think!

A new character poster for Sam Raimi's Oz: The Great and Powerful has arrived online. The poster features Rachel Weisz's character Evanora, who is the Wicked Witch in this film.

Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.

Batman To Be Rebooted in 2017?

$

Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy may be over, but that does not mean that Batman has been forgotten. Audiences can not get enough of superheroes, and even though Man of Steel arrives in theaters soon, fans are still looking forward to more Batman. Unfortunately, fans will not be seeing the Caped Crusader in the highly anticipated Justice League movie in 2015. According to Batman-on-Film, DC is not planning to have Bruce Wayne appear on screen again until 2017!

This is still technically a rumor, and no official announcement has been made from Warner Bros. The studio may be trying to give Superman a chance to dominate the box office for a few years, or they could be focusing efforts on an animated Batman. I can see the point in not wanting to have Batman back on the big screen so soon after The Dark Knight Rises, but if there is enough fan interest anything is possible.

CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON Is Getting a Sequel!

$

The Weinstein Company is developing a sequel to the classically awesome Ang Lee directed martial arts film Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon! The film production will start shooting in this coming May in Asia. The script for the film was written by John Fusco (Young Guns, Hidalgo, The Forbidden Kingdom), and the studio is looking at hiring Chinese director Ronny Yu (Warriors of Virtue, Bride of Chucky, Freddy Vs. Jason, Fearless) to develop the project, so Ang Lee won't be back to continue the franchise.

The movie is based on the same material for the Academy Award winning film. According to Deadline, it's based on Silver Vase, Iron Knight, which is the fifth book in the Crane-Iron Pentalogy by Wang Du Lu. Crouching Tiger was based on the fourth book in the series. Fusco had this to say in a statement,

This was an opportunity to explore a lifelong passion I’ve had for Wu Sia, and if there wasn’t continuing source material, I would never have gotten involved.

The sequel revolves around the character Yu Shu Lien, who was played by Michelle Yeoh in the original film. There's no word on if any of the actors will be reprising their roles though. Fusco also went on to explain,

This introduces a new generation of star-crossed lovers, and a new series of antagonists in a battle of good and evil. It has a Knights Errant quality. There is an alternate universe in the books, a martial forest that exists alongside the real world, full of wandering sword fighters, medicine men, defrocked priests, poets, sorcerers and Shaolin renegades. It’s so vast and rich, and I found characters from the second and third books in the series to create a most interesting stew while being as true to the source material as I could be.

As soon as the director officially signs on they will start casting the movie. I absolutely loved the first film, and I hope the sequel ends up being just as awesomely majestic. It has to have the same quality of production value as the first film. Anything less than that would be a shame. I'm excited to see how it turns out!

Here is another new TV spot from Michael Bay's Pain and Gain. The clip from Paramount focuses on highlighting that the movie is loosely based on true events. Just like every movie of this sort, I believe that there is more fiction than fact, but I am excited to see this regardless.

Based on the unbelievable true story of three personal trainers in 1990s Miami who, in pursuit of the American Dream, get caught up in a criminal enterprise that goes horribly wrong. Ed Harris, Tony Shalhoub, Rob Corddry, Rebel Wilson and Bar Paly also star. The film is based on magazine articles by Pete Collins, with a screenplay by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely and produced by Donald DeLine, Michael Bay and Ian Bryce.

ROBOTECH Live-Action Film Finally Has a Director!

Well, it's about freakin' time! I knew we'd eventually see the classic 1980s Robotech anime series go into production at Warner Bros. The movie has been trying to get made since 2007, and they finally attached a director to it! Nic Mathieu will be taking on the epic challenge and guess what? It's his first time directing a feature film. He's a commercial director that makes some awesome use of CGI.

Akiva Goldsman and Tobey Maguire are producing the film, which has gone through several screenwriters over the years. This is actually the first time a director has been attached to the project, though. As a fan of the series I'm incredibly excited to see this film finally come to life.

Robotech takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific isle. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off an alien invasion, with the fate of the human race ending up in the hands of two young pilots.

I think the awesomeness of Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim is the reason we are seeing these kinds of films finally being pushed forward. We've also got Godzilla and Gaiking movies being developed. Who would have thought that people would like movies involving giant robots and giant monsters?

Mathieu is also attached to direct a sci-fi project called The Wind, written by David KeoppHere's a Star Wars inspired commercial he made for Zenith that shows you the awesomeness he's capable of. Check it out!

Sean Patrick Flanery (Boondock Saints) has joined the cast of Dexter season 8. Deadline reports that the actor will play a major recurring role on the hit Showtime drama. He will play "Jacob Elroy, the ex-cop owner of a private investigation company in Miami."

Season 8 may be the shows last. Here is what Showtime president David Nevins had to say:

I think I will clarify before Dexter goes on the air for this next season (in June). There’s a clear end game in place.

At this time there are no further details available about the casting. Stay tuned for what I am sure will be more casting and news about this series.

Seth MacFarlane Releases New PSYCHO-Themed Oscars Promo

THR points us to a brand new promo for the 85th Annual Academy Awards, hosted by Ted writer/director/star Seth MacFarlane. Check it out below:

I like where this is going, and I wonder how many classic films MacFarlane and his team of writers will be able to cram into the opening video at the ceremony next month. It would be pretty cool to see him riding shotgun in Doc Brown's DeLorean, hanging out with Luke and Han in the Millenium Falcon, or - perhaps more likely - singing and dancing alongside Gene Kelly in Singin' in the Rain.

What other movies would you like to see MacFarlane tackle?

Frank Grillo and Maria Bello have joined the cast of James Wan's next thriller from Dimension Films. Variety reports that Wan is set to produce, and Will Canon will be in the director's chair. Max La Bella penned the script that tells the story of "a policeman and a psychologist who interrogate the lone survivor of a ghost-hunting excursion that resulted in the deaths of five people."

I have always been a fan of Wan's films, and am interested in learning more about this project. Frank Grillo was great in The Grey and End of Watch, and Maria Bello is tough and sexy. Share your thoughts on this news in the rant back section below.

DARKSIDERS II: THQ's Demise Leaves Darksiders IP in the Wind

$

Darksiders II was in my "get to when things die down" pile, as I truly enjoyed my time with the original. Unfortunately, it seems I have all the time in the world to catch up, as due to THQ selling off its assets and winding down to its final days, the Darksiders IP is without a home. Also without a home is Vigil, the developer of the Darksiders franchise as well as the upcoming project Crawler (and evidently it was shaping up to be something special). While there has been a great deal of fallout from THQ's descent, there seems to be more to Vigil's story than most of the others. For those who haven't been keeping up, here's a bit of a recap on the recent goings on.

While many of the other franchises & dev teams found homes, Vigil did not, and according to an intereview with Jason Rubin (via Gameinformer), it's one of his biggest regrets.

To be clear, I am not claiming that everything I did was successful or that my time at THQ was without failings. I failed to find Vigil a home. Having just finished a product, Vigil was farthest from release of their next game, and we were not able to garner any interest from buyers, despite a herculean effort. Additionally, they were working on a new IP, which meant even more risk for a buyer.

Before that interview was released, a few things leaked out via some of the devs of the now defunct Vigil studio. First there was this goodbye letter from Lead Combat Designer Ben Cureton, which was posted on NeoGaf.

My name is Ben Cureton, and I was the Lead Combat Designer at Vigil Games. I'm sitting at my desk among... what appears to be a warzone. The walls look bare. It's quiet.

The seats are empty.

We've all been on edge for the past couple months... and more so, the last couple weeks. I mean, I'm sure you can imagine what it's like to wonder if you will have a job tomorrow. Most of us here joked about it just to keep the mood light, but we all knew what could happen. Now I look around and I realize... it did happen.

Am I sad? Well yea. I've been in this industry for 20 years. Seriously. Two decades. I've been laid off more than once. It sucks every time. But am I sad I don't have a job? Not really... I'm sure I'll get another one eventually. I'm sad because it won't be THIS job. It won't be at Vigil. That's why I'm sad. The people I waged war with are no longer together. The people that I bled with, vented with, argued with (often times LOUDLY), and kicked back with... these people will never be together again in the same combination.

Not that it was perfect. But what is perfect? Did I like coming to work? Yes. Was I proud of the work that I did? Yes. More importantly, was I proud of the work that WE did? Absolutely. I knew, without a shadow of the doubt, that the project we were working on (Codenamed: Crawler) was going to blow people away. In fact, it DID blow people away. We did, in TWO months, what many companies haven't done in a year. The pride of knowing that no one was doing anything like us was so satisfying, it kept us coming to work and giving 100% every single day, even through the dark times.

... so maybe you can imagine what it feels like when you read the list of who bought what only to discover your name is not on the list. Why? Did we do something wrong? Were we not good enough? Were we not worth 'anything?' Imagine that.

Vigil was filled with people that I would put up against the best in the industry. People that made my work better, people that made me a better designer, and people that made me a better person. And now they are gone.

Their seats are empty.

It's OK, though. I guess this post makes it sound a bit melodramatic. Seriously... if you work in the video game industry you have to be resilient. Doing what you love often comes with a price - anyone who has been around for a while can tell you that. Today, that price has been paid. That being said, I'd still never dissuade anyone from following their dreams if their dream is to make video games. While it's not as romantic as it sounds, it's sure a hell of a lot of fun.

So don't cry for the people at Vigil. We made games for game players. I have no Horror stories from working here... only Honor stories. Through both praise and critiques alike, our goal was always to make a product as if we, ourselves, were the end-user. We may have gotten pushed and pulled in certain directions by forces out of our control, we were always in it to make games for game players. And that's what we did.

I can only hope that those spared from the other companies remain employed long into the future. There is not much worse than false hope, and these people deserve to continue making great games. You may not know their names, but they exist, and they bleed, sweat, and cry for your entertainment. I mean that honestly, with no negativity. They do it... no, WE do it... because we want you to have a good time.

In closing, I can only say thank you to the fans of Vigil games. Your support means more than you can imagine. Your feedback (both positive and negative) gave us long-lasting insight that we will all take with us, wherever we may go. You are the reason we made Darksiders 1 &2... and you are the reason we will continue to make games.

And with that... my seat is empty.

Ben Cureton
Lead Combat Designer
Vigil Games

P.S. This is no place for a horse.

The questions of "were we not good enough?" and "were we not worth 'anything?'" truly stick out, and mostly because they are far from the truth. Rubin talks about this in his interview, giving credence to the fact that Vigil's unannounced project, while very exciting and buzzworthy, was far from completion, which gave way to fears of paying for potential. The letter does give good insight into just how difficult being a developer in the games industry is. The word layoff shouldn't be a word you have to get used to, but it seems to be a requirement if you're in the games industry or an NFL coach. Sad reality there.

We got a small peek into what might have made it into Darksiders III via a tweet by Lead Designer Haydn Dalton, and it sure blows to know we might never see it.

But maybe there's hope. THQ will start selling off its other IP's and back catalog probably sometime next week, and Head of Platinum Games Atsushi Inaba recently tweeted that he might be interested in a bid, if the price was right (translated from Japanese via Kotaku).

Could you see a Platinum developed Darksiders? Regardless of how you feel about Platinum's previous work (most of which I rather like, not that you asked), I think it would be nice to see Darksiders in the hands of a competent studio. Maybe its rosy thinking, but I would love to see some of the Ex-Vigil team brought in to work on Darksiders III, wherever it lands. Guess we'll have to wait and see, but here's hoping.

Kate Winslet to Star in DIVERGENT

Divergent has found a big name to add to its small but growing cast. Kate Winslet is in talks to join the movie based on the first in a trilogy of young adult novels.

Shailene Woodley is set to play the lead, with Winslet in an unspecified supporting role. This would mark Winslet's first franchise, if the movie does well.

The male lead has yet to be cast, but Summit wants to adapt the entire trilogy. Neil Burger (Limitless, The Illusionist) will helm. It is set to release March 21, 2014.

Book Description:

From the brink of apocalypse, humanity has reorganized itself into five factions, each of which uphold and live by a single core value. Abnegation (the Selfless), the Erudite (the Intelligent), Candor (the Honest), Amity (the Peaceful), and the Dauntless (the Brave). Born into a Abnegation family, Beatrice has lived her life trying to uphold the ideals of her parents. Outfitted in modest grey clothing, the required style of her faction, Beatrice strives to be as selfless as the rest of her family, but faction beliefs, like giving your seat to others on public transit, do not come naturally to her. Caught between her love of her family and following her heart, Beatrice struggles in her Abnegation role. Wistfully observing the daredevil chaos of the Dauntless-born children as they crow and leap from running trains on the way to school, Beatrice feels conflicted. Society mandates that each year, all sixteen-year-olds must take an aptitude test, which determines the faction each is most suited for.

I really like Winslet and Burger but the story of Divergent and even its logo seems like a complete rip off of the Hunger Games. The author Veronica Roth has stated she thought of the idea during college. I don't buy it, but I will give credit, it's a smart way to make money.
