Why Am I Laughing? Ep. 28 — Bill Murray

Ian McKellen Will Reprise the Role of Gandalf and Other Characters He's Played in a Solo Stage Show

Legendary actor Ian McKellen is taking his epic career of famous movie roles to the stage including his most iconic role of Gandalf from Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films.

He will be performing a solo show in London this summer called Shakespeare, Tolkien, Others & Youand In the show, McKellen will "retread moments from a career spanning five decades, while also discussing his work with other actors and directors and offering audiences the opportunity to ask questions and even participate onstage."

The show will take place over the course of nine nights at London's intimate Park Theatre and this is what McKellen had to say in a statement:

"I’m performing at Park Theatre to help raise funds for the charity. In a short time the theater has established itself on both the theatrical and local maps. But with no public subsidy for core costs they need to bring in donations of around £250,000 ($311,000) every year just to keep the doors open."

He went on to explain that the money raised by Shakespeare, Tolkien, Others & You would support Park Theatre's "core ambition of producing accessible theater throughout the coming years and furthering their work with the local community."

It pretty awesome that McKellen is doing this and there's no doubt that this is an event his fans would love to attend. Hell, I would if I lived in London! I doubt he'll be bringing the show to Los Angeles, but he should!

Shakespeare, Tolkien, Others & You will run from July 3-9.

A new promo teaser for Justice League aired this morning during The Today Show that puts the focus on Aquaman. It also announced that in two days we will be getting a new full trailer. That means the trailer will be dropped on Saturday, and there's no doubt that Warner Bros. will be looking to impress fans with it, so expect some cool footage.

You can watch the promo that aired this morning below. It gives us some new footage from the film of Batman tossing Aquaman his trident and Aquaman parting the sea like Moses.

I wonder if we'll see more promo teasers like this one released prior to the full trailer on Saturday. Each one focusing on a different member of the Justice League. If that's the case, we'll make sure to post them on the site for you!

Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists newfound ally Diana Prince to face an even greater threat. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to recruit a team to stand against this newly awakened enemy. Despite the formation of an unprecedented league of heroes — Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and the Flash — it may be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

The Zack Snyder-directed film stars Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, Jason Momoa, Ray FisherCiarán Hinds as Steppenwolf, and Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor. Justice League arrives in theaters on November 17.

Haunting New ALIEN: COVENANT Poster Art Teases the Alien Queen

We've got a haunting yet beautifully designed poster to share with you today for Ridley Scott's Alien: Covenant. It features the engineered Xenomorph aliens brutally taking over mankind. As you can see, the human figures are being attacked and impregnated by facehuggers as the full grown Xenomorphs are surrounding them. It's really a terrifying and intense image, and I love it! As you can see, it also teases the Alien queen.

This is an incredible piece of movie poster art that's better than most of the other lazy posters that the studios release these days. They actually put some effort into this, and I applaud that.

Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created, with ALIEN: COVENANT, a new chapter in his groundbreaking ALIEN franchise.  The crew of the colony ship Covenant, bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world.  When they uncover a threat beyond their imagination, they must attempt a harrowing escape.

Alien: Covenant stars Michael FassbenderKatherine Waterston, Billy Crudup, Danny McBride, Demián Bichir, Carmen Ejogo, Amy Seimetz, Jussie Smollett, Callie Hernandez, Nathaniel Dean, Alexander England, Benjamin Rigby, and James Franco.

Alien: Covenant is set to open in theaters on May 19.

New Image From Stephen King's IT Features Pennywise About to Tear Georgie's Arm Off

new-image-from-stephen-kings-it-features-pennywise-about-to-tear-georgies-arm-off

Don't do it, Georgie! Don't put your hand in that storm drain with the evil clown in it!

This is one of the reasons why kids shouldn't be playing in the gutter on a raining day. Those damn hellish clowns hanging out in the storm drains. Georgie learns early on in Stephen King's It that reaching down into a storm drain with a clown in it probably isn't the best idea because he ends up getting his arm ripped off in the process.

Today we have a new photo from the upcoming film adaptation of King's classic novel, and in it we see Georgie coming face to face with Pennywise the Clown, and it looks like the moment right before he reaches down into the drain.

In an interview with Empire, director Andy Muschietti (Mama) talks about the monster in the movie explaining:

“There’s supposed to be a less-is-more thing in horror. It’s like you’re not really meant to show the monster. But Pennywise is different. With Pennywise, it’s like, ‘This is the monster, I’m showing it to you… and you’re going to shit a brick.’”

The first film in the two film series will be rated R, and it's set in the 1980s and will focus on the "Losers Club" as they come together to battle It. When previously talking about the rating and adapting the novel, producer Dan Lin said:

"It is a rated-R movie. If you’re going to make a 'Rated-R movie', you have to fully embrace what it is, and you have to embrace the source material. It is a scary clown that’s trying to kill kids. So of course that’s going to be a rated-R movie. The kids are amazing. You very much get a Stand by Me vibe as far as their camaraderie and the way they joke with each other and that they really care for each other. They do have a scary clown that’s taken over the town of Derry, so it’s going to be rated R."

The second film starts production soon. It's set 30 years later in modern times when the monster returns and the group of friends are forced to come back together as adults to destroy It once and for all. Here's the synopsis:

The film is based on the novel by Stephen King, whose story recalls a promise made twenty-eight years ago that forces seven adults to reunite in Derry, Maine, where as teenagers they battled an evil creature that preyed on the city’s children. Unsure that their Losers Club had vanquished the creature all those years ago, the seven had vowed to return to Derry if IT should ever reappear. Now, children are being murdered again and their repressed memories of that summer return as they prepare to do battle with the monster lurking in Derry’s sewers once more.

The movie stars Jaeden Lieberher (Midnight Special) as Bill Denbrough, Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things) as Richie Tozier, newcomer Sophia Lillis as Beverly Marsh, Jack Dylan Grazer (Tales of Halloween) as Stan Uris, Wyatt Oleff (Guardians of the Galaxy) as Eddie Kaspbrak, Chosen Jacobs (Hawaii Five-0) as Mike Hanlon, Jeremy Ray Taylor (42) as Ben Hanscom, and Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise.

The first film is set to be released on September 8th, 2017.

The Directing Duo Behind SWISS ARMY MAN Is Developing Sci-Fi Film With the Russo Bros.

The directing duo behind the wonderfully weird film Swiss Army Man, known as The Daniels, is setting out on an adventure to develop a sci-fi project with Marvel directors Joe and Anthony Russo.

If you haven't seen Swiss Army Man, you really need to because it's so unique in the most insane ways. It stars Paul Dano and Daniel Radcliffe, and Radcliffe plays a farting corpse and companion to Dano as he makes with way through the forest to find his way home to a woman he's infatuated with.

According to Deadline, "the film is being kept under wraps but it is a science fiction movie and is said to be as original as Swiss Army Man." After seeing what the did with Swiss Army Man, I can't even begin to imagine what a sci-fi film from these guys would be like! I can't wait to see what they come up with, though!

There's no doubt in my mind that The Daniels are going to once again give us a film unlike anything we've ever seen before. They will write and direct the project and the Russo Bros. will produce.

Ross Marquand Is Back with Another Round of Perfect Celebrity Impressions

Actor Ross Marquand (The Walking Dead) has become known for his brilliant celebrity impressions. Now Esquire has recruited him to show off his particular set of skills in a new video called "Casting Remix," which has him reading lines from famous movies as if different actors played those iconic roles. There's Liam Neeson in The Princess Bride, Brad Pitt in Jaws, John C. Reilly in Taxi Driver, and many more, and every single one of them is aces.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go try to shake the image of John Malkovich as Rose in Titanic out of my head.

Game Of Thrones' Gwendoline Christie has hopped onboard the film adaptation of the young adult trilogy Darkest Minds. THR tells us that Mandy Moore and Amandla Stenberg have already joined the project which tells the tale of teens with superpowers locked in internment camps following a pandemic outbreak. Sounds like an interesting premise, and they've got a decent amount of talent on board. I'll be excited to see how this film turns out!

Leaked Concept Art For DEADPOOL 2 Shows Brad Pitt as Cable and More

It looks like Brad Pitt could actually be up for the role of Cable in Deadpool 2! A rumor regarding his involvement broke yesterday before we learned that Michael Shannon was the frontrunner. We now have some concept art that has leaked out for the film that actually shows Pitt in the role of Cable. Even if Pitt isn't going to be in the film, we now know what kind of look they are going for.

The concept art popped up on CBM, and it also includes the kind of look they are going for with Domino and a redesigned suit for Colossus. Then, of course, there's one of Deadpool in a yellow t-shirt.

I like the look of Cable, and I've gotta admit Pitt would look pretty badass in the role. I'd love to see some art of what Michael Shannon would look like!

There's always the chance that this concept art is fake, but it looks to me like it's legit artwork. What do you all think of the designs for Cable and Domino?

Meet The Guy Who Provided the Memorable Theme Song and Sound Effects for Nickelodeon's DOUG

When I was a kid, Nickelodeon's Doug was my favorite TV show I'd ever seen. The unique characters, imaginative daydreams, and pining romance all hit me at exactly the right time in my life, and I know it left a big impact on a lot of people who grew up watching it.

Great Big Story sat down with Fred Newman, the voice actor who provided the show's theme song and those "chicka-ba-dah" noises you'd hear as it came back from a commercial break. But what really blew my mind is the fact that he also did the voice for Skeeter, Mr. Dink, and Porkchop the dog. Are you kidding me? THIS guy was the voice of Skeeter? I still can't wrap my head around that. Take a look for yourself below.

Start humming the opening theme to Nickelodeon's classic “Doug,” and any self-respecting '90s kid will surely join right in. Fred Newman, the man behind the doo-doo-doo's, didn't just give his improvised snap-and-pop to the show's theme and soundscape, though: he was also the voice of Skeeter, Porkchop, Mr. Dink, and the lead singer of the Beets. Having also worked on "Gremlins," "Harry and the Hendersons," and "Who Framed Roger Rabbit," Fred is a true legend of the voiceover game. His advice after a lifetime of making sounds? "Whatever makes you weird, go there and pursue that." Thanks, Fred. We salute you.

Brie Larson Set To Play First Woman Presidential Candidate in VICTORIA WOODHULL

Brie Larson has been tapped to star in a film about the nation's first female presidential candidate in Victoria Woodhull. THR tells us the project has been picked up by Amazon and will focus on the candidacy of Victoria Woodhull, who ran for President in 1872. Woodhull obviously didn't win, and wasn't even able to vote for herself at the time, but served as a women's suffrage activist when few were joining her cause.

No release date on the film, but it sounds like something that will be cool to watch! I can't imagine being that far ahead of my time in supporting something that is so commonplace now. Maybe I need to start advocating fringe stuff in hopes I get a movie one day down the line.

Unsettling Full Trailer Released for Hulu's THE HANDMAID'S TALE

"Better never means better for everyone."

Hulu has released the full trailer for the upcoming adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, and it has a heavy unsettling vibe. The story is set in a future dystopian society where religion rules and fertile women are forced into sexual servitude and considered property. It's a very depressing world, but it sure makes for a compelling story.

The series features a great cast that includes Elisabeth Moss as Offred, Joseph Fiennes as The Commander, Yvonne Strahovski as Serena Joy, Samira Wiley as Moira, Alexis Bledel as Ofglen, Max Minghella as Nick, Madeline Brewer as Janine, Ann Dowd as Aunt Lydia, and O-T Fagbenle as Luke. Here's the synopsis:

The Handmaid's Tale is the story of life in the dystopia of Gilead, a totalitarian society in what was formerly the United States. Facing environmental disasters and a plunging birthrate, Gilead is ruled by a twisted fundamentalism in its militarized ‘return to traditional values.’ As one of the few remaining fertile women, Offred (Elisabeth Moss) is a Handmaid in the Commander’s household, one of the caste of women forced into sexual servitude as a last desperate attempt to repopulate the world. In this terrifying society, Offred must navigate between Commanders, their cruel Wives, domestic Marthas, and her fellow Handmaids – where anyone could be a spy for Gilead – all with one goal: to survive and find the daughter that was taken from her.

The Handmaid's Tale is set to premiere on Hulu on April 26th.

Video Examines Action Scenes in THE RAID Films, OLDBOY, and More

YouTuber Rossatron has put together a solid video that examines the action scenes of movies like The Raid, Oldboy, Ip Man, the films of Jackie Chan, and many more. It's essentially a love letter to The Raid director Gareth Evans, pointing out how he operates with the mentality of knowing exactly what he needs to capture in each shot and not wasting time shooting extra, unnecessary coverage on set. This type of guerrilla filmmaking was popularized by Robert Rodriguez back in the '90s with his film El Mariachi and his book detailing the making of that movie, Rebel Without a Crew. (If you're interested in directing, check out that book if you haven't yet.)

Beware: there's some pretty gnarly violence in this video, so you may want to avoid watching it at work if there are prying eyes around.
