Marvel's BLACK PANTHER Movie Is Compared to GAME OF THRONES

There's a lot of excitement building for Marvel's Black Panther, and Get Out actor Daniel Kaluuya, who is part of the impressive cast, is here to pump up the hype even more! While talking about the film in an interview with GQ, the actor excitedly compared the movie to HBO's Game of Thrones. He said:

“This is an African blockbuster, bruv. This is like Game of Thrones. This is crazy. And Ryan Coogler is just, man dem. He’s like us! He’s a normal dude, in a Golden State hat and a Tupac T-shirt directing the whole set. It’s the most beautiful thing to see.”

He doesn't go into any details about how Black Panther is like Game of Thrones, but I imagine it's in terms of tone, epic feel, plot elements, and maybe even some of the fantasy elements. It's safe to say that Black Panther isn't going to include insanely bloody violence and lots of nudity.

We've already seen some beautiful concept art from the film showing off its impressive and lush setting. I can't wait to see that art brought to life in the film.

Black Panther director Ryan Coogler is the guy who previously brought us Creed and Fruitvale Station, both of which were great and powerful movies. I imagine he'll bring that same power to the Black Panther story he set out to tell, only this time it will be in much more epic scale than anything he's made before.

Black Panther follows T’Challa who, after the events of “Captain America: Civil War,” returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to take his place as King. However, when an old enemy reappears on the radar, T’Challa’s mettle as King and Black Panther is tested when he is drawn into a conflict that puts the entire fate of Wakanda and the world at risk.

The movie stars Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, and Andy SerkisBlack Panther comes out on February 16th, 2018.

This Cool Spider-Man Mask Has Functional Shutter Lenses

One of the coolest aspects of Spider-Man's costume is the way his eyes can express clear emotions even from within the confines of the red and black suit. That's something that's easy to convey in the panels of a comic book, but it becomes a lot more difficult when a real person attempts to take on the mantle. Even Marvel Studios had to rely on CG to alter Spidey's eyes when Tom Holland was in the costume in Captain America: Civil War, so what chance do cosplayers have of being able to pull off convincing eye motion in their own costumes? Thanks to Lenses Factory HK (via Fashionably Geek), those chances just went through the roof.

As you can see in the videos below, they've created functional shutter lenses for the eyes in their Spidey costumes. I'd imagine this kind of thing would be a game-changer for cosplay enthusiasts. A very small number of these will go on sale on April 2, 2017, so if this is the kind of thing that you've been waiting for to take your cosplay game to the next level, you'll find details on how to get one in the final Facebook embed at the bottom of this post.

Robert Englund Loved the Idea of FREDDY VS. JASON VS. ASH and Explains Why It Never Happened

One of the dumbest decisions that New Line Cinema ever made was to pass on the idea of making a Freddy Vs. Jason Vs. Ash. That movie would've exploded at the box office. Plans to have Bruce Campbell's Ash Williams battle Freddy and Jason were actually set in motion after 2003's Freddy Vs. Jason, and Freddy himself, Robert Englund, loved the concept! Unfortunately, the studio didn't like director Sam Raimi's pitch.

When the movie didn't happen, a six-issue comic series was released in 2007-2008 that saw Ash conquer both Freddy and Jason. Englund talked to a bunch of fans at Emerald City Comic Con recently and shared his thoughts on the idea and why New Line never moved forward with it.

"I am very disappointed. We left some money on the table, as they say in Hollywood, right after the great success of Freddy vs. Jason. Sam Raimi was the king of the world; he had all the money in the world because of Spider-Man. I'm a huge fan of Sam's and I'm a big fan of Bruce Campbell. They had this idea, Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash. Now we're in what we call post-Deadpool, post-Guardians of the Galaxy perception; but back then we hadn't had that kind of a film yet, with the exception of Evil Dead and Freddy vs. Jason, that were really mashing graphic novel and comedy and horror and science fiction. So I loved this idea.
"Sam Raimi wanted Ash to win. He wanted him to win the match. Which I thought was a great idea. New Line Cinema was against it because I had just had my ass kicked by Jason; they were afraid, 'cause I was the most successful of the three franchises, they were afraid. 'We can't have Freddy killed twice in a row.' And I was like, 'Wait a minute, guys. You revived me, you resurrected me with dog urine! It's real easy to bring Freddy back. Come on. That's not that hard to do."

The only way it would have worked is if Ash won! Englund makes a great point as well because it wouldn't have mattered if Freddy or Jason died, they just keep coming back anyway! The whole excuse New Line used not to do it was completely lame. The actor revealed his movie poster concept for the film:

"But anyway. I loved the idea. I had this vision of the poster. Bruce Campbell with his shirt open and all of his abs spray painted and highlighted, with Freddy Krueger under [one] arm and Jason under [the other] arm. And the poster would say: 'Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash: Keeping the world safe from sequels.'"

This was such a huge missed opportunity! It's a shame that it never happened. This could have been a movie for the ages, a classic that would go down in history as being one of the most epic horror movie battles ever, and they were scared to take a chance. Bummer.

A lot of us grew up watching Sesame Street, which helped us learn to read, write, count and offer us life lessons about doing the right thing. Like many of you, I've always loved and enjoyed these classic muppet characters.

Vanity Fair rounded up many of these characters that include Elmo, Cookie Monster, Oscar the Grouch, Big Bird, Count von Count, and more, and shot a video of them reading famous movie lines from the last century of cinema.

Some of the films represented in the video include Back to the Future, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Cool Hand Luke, Frankenstein, Citizen Kane, Moonstruck, Sudden Impact, Poltergeist, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Rocky, and Star Wars: A New Hope.

It's a lot of fun so I hope you enjoy it!

Bad Robot Is Making a Series Based on RuPaul's Life in the '80s

Bad Robot is making a dramedy based on the life of superstar drag queen RuPaul. Deadline reports the series will take place in the '80s and tell the story of RuPaul and how he rose through the ranks of the New York City scene to become a gay icon. That's definitely a story I would be interested in hearing! I can't even begin to imagine the life RuPaul led prior to being a celebrity, and I can't imagine it was all that easy.

RuPaul will serve as an executive producer to the series, which will be written by Power producer Gary Lennon. No release date has been set for the series, but it is currently being shopped to networks.

I'm sure this post will be met with some controversy. On that note here's a clip with RuPaul on WTF with Marc Maron that I think is listening to. It's a great way of showing you have an opinion and RuPaul doesn't give a shit about it!

Here Are Four Keys to Making a Great FANTASTIC FOUR Movie

It's no secret that the three Fantastic Four movies made in the past couple of decades have not exactly gone over well. And since 20th Century Fox owns the rights to the characters, it seems pretty damn unlikely that they're going to let those rights lapse and just give the characters back to Marvel Studios. Writer/producer Simon Kinberg has talked about wanting to make another movie, and if they do, they may want to look to an unlikely source for ideas: YouTube. Yeah, I know, most YouTube videos suck, but Patrick (H) Willems lays out four keys to make a great FF film that actually make a lot of sense. Take a look and let us know what you think.

STRANGER THINGS Star Joe Keery Recreates FERRIS BUELLER Scene with an Added Pizza Twist

Joe Keery, who plays Steve Harrington in Netflix's Stranger Things, has been cast as Ferris Bueller in a remake of John Hughes' iconic teen classic Ferris Bueller's Day Off...but don't worry — it's just a remake of one scene, and it's for a pizza commercial. Watch Keery don Ferris's jacket and attempt to race the delivery man back to his house. I realize this is blatant pandering from the pizza company's marketing department, and while I normally bristle at that kind of thing, this is admittedly relevant to my interests and it happens to be fairly well-executed, so what the hell. Have some fun and watch this below.

SNL Timelapse Shows Kate McKinnon Transforming into a Horrific Sea Creature in Under Three Minutes

NBC's late night weekend staple Saturday Night Live is earning its best ratings in years thanks largely in part to Alec Baldwin's continued impression, but let's not give him all the credit. The show has been running smoothly for over forty years now, and since we all just watch it at home, it's easy to take for granted how difficult it must be to transition between scenes just in the time it takes for one commercial break to air.

SNL has released a video timelapse of star Kate McKinnon going from playing Jeff Sessions to playing a hideous mermaid named Shud in that span, and it's impressive how quickly the makeup team completely changes her look in just about four minutes.

Marvel Almost Cast Chinese-American Actor Lewis Tan as Danny Rand in IRON FIST

$

0

There's been a lot of controversy surrounding Marvel's decision to cast Finn Jones in the role of Danny Rand in Iron Fist because he's white. A lot of people feel that the role should've gone to an Asian actor. This has been a hot topic with Scarlett Johansson being cast as The Major in Ghost in the Shell and Tilda Swinton being cast as The Ancient One in Doctor Strange.

I personally don't care who is cast in any film or TV series as long as they are a right fit for the role they are playing and they fit the story and themes of the project the creative team is developing.

I never had any issues with Jones being cast in the role of Iron Fist because Danny Rand was always a white guy in the comics. That's all I ever knew the character as. Had they cast an Asain actor in the role, though, I wouldn't have complained or thrown a fit over it. I just go with the flow of what Marvel does because they know what they're doing and they know what they want when developing their projects.

It turns out that Marvel almost hired a Chinese-American actor to take on the role of Danny Rand. That actor is Lewis Tan, who ended up playing the villain Zhou Cheng in the series. In a recent interview with Vulture, the actor opened up about the process he went through in almost landing the role saying:

"Yeah, I read for Danny originally. I think they were highly considering it at one point in time, but it would have definitely changed the dynamic of the show. It would have been a different show.
"I had a lot to offer here, but I knew that the character is white in the comic book, so I was concerned. But I thought at least I had a shot - I’m half white and I do martial arts and I could easily play that role. So I was excited. And then I read for Danny and they liked me a lot. I read again and again and again, and it was a long process, and it got to the point where they were talking about my availability and my dates. That’s always a good sign, you know? And then they went with Finn and they had me read for a villain part maybe two weeks later."

It would have been interesting to see what Marvel would have done with an Asian-American Danny Rand. The series could've included a story about an Asian-American learning more about his Asian roots. Tan went on to talk about how an Asian-American version of Iron Fist would have given the upcoming Defenders series an "interesting dynamic" saying:

"I think it would be really interesting to have that feeling of an outsider. There’s no more of an outsider than an Asian-American: We feel like outsiders in Asia and we feel like outsiders at home. I understand those frustrations of being an outsider. Like Danny’s character. I understand him very well."

Tan said he understands why Marvel chose to cast ones as Rand, and holds no ill will toward anyone involved with the development of Iron Fist. He does say it's a missed opportunity for Marvel and he hopes things will change. He explains:

"It is a missed opportunity. That’s exactly how I feel about it, word for word. It would’ve been a brave thing to do, for sure, for Marvel. I can see how that was difficult to make that decision. I think, personally, it would’ve paid off. But I think it’ll come next because people are feeling underrepresented. People are like, 'Yo, this was a perfect opportunity to represent us.' They chose not to, and it’s not even their fault. I see why they stuck to the source material because it’s very risky to move away from that, but they’ll move away from it in other areas and in other shows where they’ll take an Asian character and make him white. So you can’t really win with that argument. Because we’ve seen many times when they’ve taken Asian characters and made him white.

It's interesting to think what the show could've been had they hired Tan in the role of Iron Fist. I wonder if the show would have been met with better reviews. Would have he been a better actor than Jones in the role? I guess we'll never know. I personally like Jones as Danny Rand, though, and I've been enjoying the show so far. I may be in the minority on that, but if I said I wasn't enjoying it, I'd be lying. It tells a good and intriguing story.

What do you think about all thins? Do you think Marvel should've gone with Tan in the role or are you happy with what Jones has done with the role?

Set Videos and Photos From Marvel's BLACK PANTHER Feature Chase Sequence

Black Panther is currently shooting in South Korea, and we've got some cool videos and photos from the set of the film to share with you. They feature part of an epic chase sequence being shot. Variety previously reported that this chase scene would involve some "150 cars and more than 700 people" and that it's "a car chase scene with the protagonist and the villain." It will also involve "helicopter(s) and guns (firing blanks)."

We've also seen concept art from this scene that you can see above featuring Black Panther on top of a car, which is exactly what you'll be seeing in the video and photos below. Black Panther is all decked out in his costume and holding on to the top of a car.

Film Pitch Circulating Hollywood That Is THE AVENGERS Meets Fairytale Princesses

$
0

Does the thought of Snow White orchestrating a "dwarf strike" on a compound sound exciting? What about Cinderella breaking a glass slipper on a table and brandishing it to keep goblins away? I don't think this Hollywood pitch is quite that intense, but Princesses is looking to be a film that puts your typical fairy tale Princess and flips the script.

Princesses is a film being shopped around Hollywood that Tracking Board likens to The Avengers meets fairy tale princesses. Falling in line with the current theme of strong female characters, it's not necessarily a new idea, but exciting nonetheless. Since no studio has purchased the rights to the film as of yet, there's really no telling which characters will be in the film, but if it's anyone other than Disney we can assume it will be your public domain princesses. That means Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, Cinderella, and all the old school favorites are up for grabs.

If Disney does end up purchasing this script, you have to wonder how they'll work with it. Disney has been known to offer alternate takes on their classic characters such as ABC's Once Upon A Time and Disney Channel's The Descendants, but a superhero princess ensemble film? I'm not sure they'd go for it, but I'd be super pumped if they did! Obviously, we're far away from anything other than a script right now, but we'll keep you posted to see if any studios pick it up.

Details on How the Original Ending of STAR WARS: ROGUE ONE Played Out Have Been Revealed

$

0

It's long been known that the original ending for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was completely scraped for the ending that we ended up seeing in the film. I was completely happy and satisfied with the ending where the whole team bites the dust, but in the alternate ending the plan was for Jyn and Cassian to live to fight another day.

In an interview with EW, co-writer Gary Whitta talked about coming up with the ending, saying:

“The original instinct was that they should all die. It’s worth it. If you’re going to give your life for anything, give your life for this, to destroy a weapon that going to kill you all anyway. That’s what we always wanted to do. But we never explored it because we were afraid that Disney might not let us do it, that Disney might think it’s too dark for a Star Wars movie or for their brand."

After the original ending didn't play out as smoothly as they would have liked, they finally decided to pitch the new ending where everyone dies. They went for it and they got the ending that the whole creative team wanted to do in the first place.

For those of you like myself who are curious to know how the original ending plays out in the story, EW and Whitta offer us the following details:

The Death Star emerges from hyperspace to lay waste to Scarif and protect the Empire’s secrets by destroying the special weapons facility along with the Rebel incursion.
But this time there was no last-second broadcast of the plans from a satellite tower. Jyn and Cassian were to escape the surface of the beach world carrying the data tapes.
“A rebel ship came down and got them off the surface,” Whitta says. “The transfer of the plans happened later. They jumped away and later [Leia’s] ship came in from Alderaan to help them. The ship-to-ship data transfer happened off Scarif.”
Darth Vader was still in pursuit and began attacking Jyn’s shuttle as the Rebels tried desperately to transfer the information from the data tapes to Leia’s vessel. Finally, Vader was successful in breaching their shields and destroying the craft.
The audience would have been left fearing the heroes were dead. But as Vader’s Star Destroyer ventures off to chase Leia’s Tantive IV, we would have remained focused on the shuttle fragments floating in the vastness of space.
“They got away in an escape pod just in time,” Whitta said. “The pod looked like just another piece of debris.”
This echoes a similar trick from The Empire Strikes Back, when Han Solo allows the Millennium Falcon to drift away from a Star Destroy disguised in a plume of garbage – unaware that also camouflaged in that detritus was Boba Fett’s Slave I.

It's definitely an interesting way to take it, but I liked the ending they ended up giving us way better. No wonder Felicity Jones has a sequel film in her contract! If she would have lived, we may have seen another film featuring the character after these events. Whitta goes on to explain the issues with this ending and why it needed to be changed saying:

"The fact that we had to jump through so many hoops to keep them alive was the writing gods telling us that if they were meant to live it wouldn’t be this difficult. We decided they should die on the surface [of Scarif,] and that was the way it ended. We were constantly trying to make all the pieces fit together. We tried every single idea. Eventually, through endless development you get through an evolutionary process where the best version rises to the top."

Director Gareth Edwards goes on to defend the ending with the whole Rogue One team dying. Not that it needs any defending because it was the right way to proceed with the ending, but he says:

"You have the darkness that’s in the undercurrent of the story at that point, but you still have the rightness of why they’re doing it. It doesn’t feel depressing. It feels like you want them to succeed at any cost. It’s a sport where the clock is ticking, and they need to just dive across the finish line. You do whatever you need to do to get there. It’s a gauntlet that they’re handing to Princess Leia. You get that moment where the crowd feels like it can cheer at the end."

What do you all think of the original ending of Rogue One? Do you think they made the right decision to change it up?
