Fantastic New Trailer for the Japanese Anime Film Sensation YOUR NAME

fantastic-new-trailer-for-the-japanese-anime-film-sensation-your-name1

The anime film Your Name was a huge hit in Japan in 2016, making over $230 million in Japan alone. That's a pretty big deal because it makes it the highest grossing film in Japan... ever! FUNimation is planning to release the film here in the U.S. on April 7th, and today they've released the official English dub trailer for the movie. I really love what I'm seeing.

The film was directed by Makoto Shinkai, and the story follows two teenagers named Mitsuha and Taki who are complete strangers living separate lives until they suddenly switch places. "Mitsuha wakes up in Taki's body, and he in hers. This occurrence happens randomly, and they must adjust their lives around each other. Yet, somehow, it works. They build a connection by leaving notes for one another until they wish to finally meet. But something stronger than distance may keep them apart."

It looks like a beautiful film that tells a great story, and I've heard so many great things about it, I can't wait to finally see it for myself.

Supercut: Ben Stiller Sure Says the Word "Little" a Lot

Before I clicked on this video, I saw it was four minutes and eight seconds long. No problem, right? But let me warn you: four minutes and eight seconds starts to feel like an eternity when you realize just how often Ben Stiller has said the word "little" in his career — especially in the context of calling someone a "little baby," and describing (in detail) all of the accessories they should be carrying to wear that insult like a badge. To be fair, around the three minute mark, the focus shifts to Stiller's co-stars referring to him as little.

Some actors have go-to tics and things that they say all the time...I just didn't realize that this was one of Stiller's. It's also no surprise that this video is edited by the team at Owenergy, the YouTube channel devoted to all things Owen Wilson (including Wilson saying "wow" a lot). Enjoy...if you can.

We are only a month and a day away from the premiere of season ten of Doctor Who, and I for one cannot wait! It has been far, far, far too long! And while I will miss Clara (Jenna Coleman), I am excited to see what new companion Bill (Pearl Mackie) brings to the table. If you want to get even more excited, watch this trailer for the tenth season and speculate about what it all means in the comments. Are you excited to see that Missy (Michelle Gomez) is returning? What’s the deal with that humanoid Dalek? And what do you think Steven Moffat and Peter Capaldi have up their sleeves for their last bow?

Season ten of Doctor Who premieres on April 15.

Wolverine Is an Obnoxious Drunk in Animated LOGAN Parody

The team at ArtSpear Entertainment has created a parody of Logan in which Wolverine has an over-the-top Aussie accent and is a much bigger drunk than he is in the actual film. The animation style is fascinating — it looks like they rotoscoped actual footage from the trailer and then added their own spin to it — and with Logan making such a big impact on fans worldwide, now's a good time to check this out.

(Side note: I had no idea that "Bogan" is a slang term. According to Wikipedia, it's "a derogatory Australian and New Zealand slang word used to describe a person whose speech, clothing, attitude and behaviour exemplify values and behaviour considered unrefined or unsophisticated." The more you know...)

Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman on List to Play Lisbeth Salander in THE GIRL IN THE SPIDER'S WEB

Yesterday we learned that Sony Pictures is finally moving forward on the sequel to The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, which is called The Girl in the Spider's Web. Evil Dead and Don't Breathe director Fede Alvarez is set to replace David Fincher in the director's chair, and the whole cast of the film is also going to be replaced, so Rooney Mara will not be back in the role as Lisbeth Salander.

Today we have the names of two actresses that are said to be in the running for the role and they are Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman. Judging by those names, the studio is looking to cast a big A-list star in the role. Both of these actresses are great and each has the acting chops to pull it off, but it would still be a little weird seeing either one in the role. Both Noomi Rapace and Mara were great in the role, and they each played the character perfectly in their own way.

If I had to choose between Johansson and Portman, though, I would have to go with Portman because she is the better actress. Johansson was in the running for the character in the first film, but Fincher ended up going with Mara, so she might have the edge. I'm sure there are other actresses in the running, so there's a chance that the role could go to someone completely different. Yesterday I suggested that Jane Levy might be in the running because Alvarez has worked with her in both his films.

Fincher is a producer on the film, which has a script that is being written by Alvarez, Steven Knight (Eastern Promises, Peaky Blinders) and Jay Basu (Metal Gear Solid).

A genius hacker who has always been an outsider. A journalist with a penchant for danger. She is Lisbeth Salander, the girl with the dragon tattoo. He is Mikael Blomkvist, crusading editor of Millennium. One night, Blomkvist receives a call from a source who claims to have been given information vital to the United States by a young female hacker. Blomkvist, always on the lookout for a story, reaches out to Salander for help. She, as usual, has plans of her own. Together they are drawn into a ruthless underworld of spies, cybercriminals, and government operatives—some willing to kill to protect their secrets.

Who would you want to see in the role of Lisbeth Salander?

Remember that anime Godzilla film we've been writing about? Anime News Network says Toho has struck a deal with Netflix to stream the film globally this year! That is awesome news because the concept art alone for this film looks like something we've never seen before in the Godzilla universe! I suppose that's fitting as this will be the first time the Godzilla franchise has tackled anime. The film will be on Netflix sometime in 2017, and the main voice actors for the film will be hosting an event March 26th so maybe we can expect a trailer by then? Let's hope so!

Edward James Olmos Confirms His Return for BLADE RUNNER 2049

Edward James Olmos has confirmed that he is reprising his role as Eduardo Gaff in director Denis Villeneuve's Blade Runner 2049. There were rumors about his possible return, and in an interview with TheTRENDTalk, the actor opened up a little bit about his role in the sequel, saying:

“I signed a seven page non-disclosure contract. I did, my manager did, my agent did, everybody did. I couldn’t talk about it. I couldn’t talk about it to anybody about it. Guess what? This is the first time that I’m telling the whole world, that yes, I am going to be Gaff in Blade Runner 2049.”

He's obviously allowed to talk about it now! When talking about how Gaff will fit into the story, he said:

“Well it’s not about Gaff, but it’s about someone who is going to try to find out certain things about us back then. My role is like it was in the original – that time I only had four scenes, in this I only have one. But again, it’s a poignant little scene.”

Even if it's just one scene, it's still great that Olmos is back to reprise his role in the sequel! As most of you already know, in the original film, Gaff is the character behind the tiny origami figures that served as subtle observations about Deckard. Those origami implied that Rick Deckard is a Replicant. There are a lot of fan theories that revolve around this and Gaff, and It's going to be really interesting to see how those theories pan out in the upcoming sequel.

Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.

Blade Runner 2049 has a great supporting cast that includes Robin Wright, Dave Bautista, Sylvia Hoeks, Carla Juri, David Dastmalchian, Barkhad Abdi, Lennie James, and Jared Leto. It opens in theaters on October 7, 2017. For more Blade Runner 2049 news, click here.

Wild New Trailer for the Gun Battle Action Film FREE FIRE

wild-new-trailer-for-the-gun-battle-action-film-free-fire2

Free Fire is one of my most anticipated movies this year, and we've got an exhilarating new trailer for you to watch today! The movie just looks like an insanely wild good time filled with gun battle action and hilarious humor.

The movie comes from director Ben Wheatley (High Rise, A Field in England, Kill List) and it's unlike anything, he's done before. The film is set in Boston in 1978, and it centers on a meeting in a deserted warehouse between two gangs. As you'll see, it escalates into a crazy shootout and a game of survival.

The film also comes complete with an awesome cast that includes Brie Larson, Cillian Murphy, Armie Hammer, Sharlto Copley, Enzo Cilenti, Sam Riley, Jack Reynor, and Michael Smiley.

Set in Boston around 1978, a large weapons deal is about to go down between a group of IRA militants  and a cocky arms dealer. In an abandoned warehouse, a middle man and extra muscle have come along to make sure the deal goes smoothly. Tensions are running high and anger is close to the surface. The exchange appears to go well – until the first shot is fired. An explosion of violence and accusations ensue as everyone present fights for their life , and the big bag of money lying on the floor.

Free Fire is set to hit theaters on on April 21st, so we don't have to wait much longer!

Someone Spent Two Years Editing All of BREAKING BAD Into a Two Hour Movie

$

It's been more than three years since AMC's layered, complex drug drama Breaking Bad came to a satisfying end and cemented itself in the pantheon of the best television shows ever made. I haven't carved out enough time to rewatch the entire series yet (there's a seemingly never-ending list of things I need to catch up with first), but my Blu-ray box set is ready, patiently waiting in the corner. But while revisiting the series in its entirety would certainly bring its own joy and value, today I discovered an interesting alternative that wouldn't take nearly as much time.

It's called Breaking Bad: The Movie. Someone decided to condense the entire 62 hours of the show's runtime into just over two hours. To be absolutely clear: I'm certainly not saying that this should be seen in lieu of the original show. But, as the creators of this video put it, as an "alternative"? Seems like a cool idea. I clicked around through the video a little bit (full disclosure: I didn't have two free hours to kill watching this before I wrote about it, so I haven't seen the entire thing yet), and I think in addition to the exercise of trimming the show down to its key components, it's also a fascinating commentary on the cinematic nature of modern TV. Take a look, and let me know what you think.

What if Breaking Bad was a movie ?
After two years of sleepless nights of endless editing, we bring you the answer to that very question. A study project that became an all-consuming passion.
It’s not a fan-film, hitting the highlights of show in a home-made homage, but rather a re-imagining of the underlying concept itself, lending itself to full feature-length treatment.
An alternative Breaking Bad, to be viewed with fresh eyes.

Spooky Trailer for Emilia Clarke's Horror Film THE VOICE IN THE STONE

$

Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke finds herself in horror movie hell in the creepy new thriller she stars in called The Voice in the Stone. The movie has a very gothic horror movie feel to it, and I love the old-school spooky vibe that this trailer radiates. This could actually be a solid horror movie. Here's the synopsis:

A haunting thriller set in an isolated castle in 1950s Tuscany, Voice from the Stone tells the story of Verena, a determined young nurse who is hired to help the mute young heir within. But the more she observes him, the more Verena becomes convinced he has fallen under the spell of a powerful and otherworldly persona trapped in the villa’s stone walls, one that seems to be rapidly entwining with her own.

The Voice in the Stone is based on the Italian novel “La Voce Della Pietra” by Silvio Raffo, and it looks like Clarke gives a great performance. As you'll see in the trailer, she goes through one hell of a mental breakdown! It was directed by Eric D. Howell, and it also stars Marton Csokas who you might recognize from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

The trailer comes to us from USA Today, and the film will be released in select theaters, On Demand, and Digital HD on April 28. I'm looking forward to checking it out.

Watch: College Humor Makes Fun of Casting A-List Actors as Sci-Fi Villains and Burying Them Under Makeup

What do Tom Hardy, Idris Elba, and Oscar Isaac have in common? Aside from being terrifically talented actors, they've all been cast in superhero or sci-fi films and had their acting tools extremely limited thanks to a mask or pounds of makeup and prosthetics. At a certain point, if an actor is so hampered by a costume or design choice that it makes that person lose the essence of what made them a good fit for the part in the first place, it's probably a good idea to take a closer look at redesigning the character. There are some acting obstacles even the best A-listers can't overcome.

College Humor explores this idea in their own funny parody below. Let us know what you think:

Darth Vader's Epic Final Scene in ROGUE ONE Was Added at the Last Minute

darth-vaders-final-epic-scene-in-rogue-one-was-added-at-the-last-minute

One of the best parts of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was at the end when Darth Vader showed up and brutally wrecked havoc on the Rebels. It turns out that epic sequence was a last-minute addition to the film and was shot about three months before the film hit theaters.

Director Gareth Edwards talked to Fandango about how the addition of Darth Vader came about and how he was originally never going to board the Rebel ship:

"He arrives and obliterates the Calamari ship, and then the blockade runner gets out just in time and he pursues the blockade runner. And then Jabez was like, 'I think we need to get Darth on that ship,' and I thought, yeah, that's a brilliant idea and would love to do it, but there's no way they're going to let us do it. It's a big number and we had, what, like 3 or 4 months before release. Kathy [Kennedy] came in and Jabez thought, f*ck it, and pitched her this idea, and she loved it. Suddenly within a week or two we were at Pinewood shooting that scene.

"Because it was my last chance to do Star Wars, and because you know it's the end, we really were very careful with it. We storyboarded absolutely everything and tried to have no regrets.

"It just felt right; it felt like the right thing to do. It really is just the greatest hits of Darth; that corridor. And we really didn't want to do anything you haven't seen him do so it didn't throw people off. We kept it to what had been established."

The director went on to say that the stunt team "came up with a whole shopping list of ideas. 70% we used, and maybe 30% felt a little too extreme. They were things you hadn’t seen him do before."

It's crazy that this amazing scene wasn't planned out from the very beginning. It's exactly what the movie needed, and it ties everything together so perfectly and fantastically links it directly to A New Hope. I'm so happy that Edwards and the creative team moved on it and got it done before the movie was released. I don't even want to imagine what the movie would be like with out that scene.

A New Remake of THE FLY Will Be Directed by SLEIGHT Helmer J.D. Dillard

$

A new remake of The Fly has been has been on the verge of happening for years. It looks like Fox is finally ready to move forward with it, and they are looking to hire director J.D. Dillard to take on the job. Dillard made his directorial debut with the fantastic film Sleight. He would not only direct The Fly, but he would also write it with his writing partner Alex Theurer.

The first version of The Fly was released in 1958 and came from director Kurt Neumann. That film was based on a short story of the same name by George Langelaan. In 1986 David Cronenberg released his version of the story, which is the one most of you are probably familiar with. The film starred Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis and was such an awesomely grotesque and disturbing movie! That was followed by two lackluster sequels called Return of the Fly and Curse of the Fly.

Dillard's version would, once again, retell the story of a scientist who, through a series of science experiments, ends up mutating into a nasty gooey human fly. I don't think that there's really any point in making another remake after what Cronenberg did, but you know how these Hollywood executives think. They're looking for a quick and easy cash grab with a fan base instead of trying something new.

Dillard definitely has talent as a director. His first film, Sleight, was such a great movie that followed a young street magician who uses his skills to become a superhero of sorts as he is out to protect and save his sister. That movie hasn't come out yet, but when it does on April 28th, you've gotta check it out!

Regardless of Dillard's skills as a filmmaker, seeing The Fly being remade again is disappointing. Maybe he'll be able to do something cool with it, but I'm not expecting it to be better than Cronenberg's film.

What do you all think about Fox wanting to proceed with their remake of The Fly?

Samuel L. Jackson May Have Just Teased the Return of Red Skull in the MCU

samuel-l-jackson-may-have-just-teased-the-return-of-red-skull-in-the-mcu

Technically the Red Skull could still be alive and well in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The last time we saw him was at the end of Captain America: The First Avenger when he grabbed the Cosmic Cube and disappeared in a flash of energy. I believe that Red Skull still is around and that he could eventually reemerge. When previously talking about the possible return of the character, actor Hugo Weaving said:

"With Marvel, it’s pretty basic stuff: accept the deal and enjoy the ride. It’s not a major stretch for an actor, but on the other hand the difficulty with the Marvel universe is maintaining a link to a human dimension within such an extraordinary, technological CGI universe. In terms of me going back and doing another one, I don’t know. I’m not sure what they’re up to with the Red Skull."

Samuel L. Jackson may know something about what's going on with the Red Skull, though. In a recent interview with Hot 97, the actor hinted that Nick Fury might be trying to figure out what the villain is up to. This is his direct quote:

"You didn't see me in Civil War. I’m still out there trying to figure out what, you know, The Skull is going to..."

And at that point, he's cut off! No one followed up with him on the whole Skull comment! I have no idea if this is for sure a reference to the Red Skull, but he's the only skull character I know of that exists in the MCU, so you tell me.

If the Red Skull is still alive in the MCU, he could show up again at any time. If it does happen, I imagine it won't be until we see a fourth Captain America film if it ever happens. That just seems like it would be the most appropriate place for the return of the villain, but who knows. Maybe Jackson had no idea what in the hell he was talking about.

You can watch Jackson make the comment in the video below around the 30:20 mark. What are your thoughts on his comment?

Fun Full Promo for THE FLASH/SUPERGIRL Musical Crossover Episode "Duet"

$

0

If you are excited about the upcoming musical Flash/Supergirl crossover, “Duets,” get more excited, because we have a full trailer for it, and it looks bonkers and fun. Of course, it’s a TV episode, so by “full trailer” I mean 20 second promo spot, but still. The crosscutting to show every actor in the CW/DC universe with singing chops — Jesse L. Martin, Victor Garber, Jeremy Jordan, and John Barrowman all have Broadway/West End backgrounds — makes me think Berlanti and company just thought, “All these people can sing, let’s have some fun and put on a show.” Of course, the titular leads, Melissa Benoist and Grant Gustin, were both on Glee, so we’ve heard them sing before. Here is the official synopsis:

Barry (Gustin) and team are surprised when Mon-El (guest star Chris Wood) and Hank Henshaw (guest star David Harewood) arrive on their Earth carrying a comatose Supergirl (guest star Benoist) who was whammied by the Music Meister (guest star Darren Criss). Unable to wake her up, they turn to Team Flash to save her. However, the Music Meister surprises The Flash and puts him in a similar coma, one that Team Flash can’t cure. Kara and Barry wake up without their powers in an alternate reality where life is like a musical and the only way to escape is by following the script, complete with singing and dancing, to the end.

It seems pretty silly, but lots of fun. Hopefully they can follow the yellow brick road — wait, what’s wrong with me, I mean the script — well enough to survive, because it would go down as one of the weirdest moments in TV history if the Music Meister takes out a superhero in a musical coma.

"Duets" airs on Tuesday, March 21 on The CW.
