Laura Dern Has High Praise for David Lynch's New TWIN PEAKS Episodes

Jurassic Park star Laura Dern is currently making waves on HBO's Big Little Lies, but she'll soon be a part of a different limited series that's far more mysterious. Dern is one of the new members of the incredibly eclectic cast of David Lynch's Twin Peaks revival, and in an interview with Vanity Fair (via Uproxx), she had some high praise for what Lynch has done with the new episodes:

“It’s brave and fiery and deep, poignant and hilarious...You must always watch when David Lynch makes anything. I believe it’s what keeps art going. It should be a prerequisite.”

I'm watching the original Twin Peaks for the first time right now in preparation for the new episodes, and man, it's such a weird show. I'm about eight episodes into season two, and after every episode concludes, I find myself baffled that this was on a major TV network during prime time in the 1990s. People must have been losing their minds at the sheer strangeness of it. But I'm with Dern on this one: Lynch may be a bizarre filmmaker, but he's definitely a guy who always creates compelling material — even if I can't quite wrap my head around all of it sometimes.

Twin Peaks returns on Showtime on May 21, 2017 at 9pm.

LOGAN Video: All of the Easter Eggs, References, and Cameos You Want to Know About

Mr. Sunday Movies is here with a new video counting down all of the Easter eggs and references in James Mangold's Logan, which is supposedly Hugh Jackman's last time playing the character. (For the record, I do think it'll be his last solo movie as Wolverine, but I feel like it's 50/50 that he'll be back as a cameo in another movie.) I enjoyed the movie for the most part, and it's always cool to see MSM's videos break everything down in such minute detail — especially in a movie like this that takes place outside of the normal X-Men franchise timeline. He gets into that whole aspect late in the video, but if you're looking for a clear-cut, satisfying answer about how this fits perfectly into the timeline, you should probably look elsewhere.

Watch: THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE Was Incredibly Difficult to Animate

Traditional hand-drawn animation is tough to pull off, but after watching this behind-the-scenes video revealing how difficult the animation for The LEGO Batman Movie was, I have a newfound respect for the specific process of making these LEGO-themed animated movies using computer technology. The sheer number of bricks is staggering, and the scale of some of these sets (one of which would be six and a half football fields wide if it were a physical set) is truly mind-blowing. Massive props to the team at Animal Logic for a job well done on this movie. See how they did it in the video below:

Margot Robbie to Play MARIAN in a Solo Movie About Maid Marian Taking On Robin Hood's Mantle

$

Man, Hollywood is straight-up obsessed with all things Robin Hood right now. Perhaps it's that the "rob the rich to give to the poor" mentality seems especially relevant right now, but for whatever reason, multiple studios have Robin Hood movies in the works...and a new contender just popped up as well. Deadline reports that Suicide Squad star Margot Robbie is set to star in Marian, which is being described as "Braveheart meets Game of Thrones."

Robbie will play Maid Marian from the Robin Hood stories, but with a twist: this time, she takes on the Robin Hood mantle herself. Here's the synopsis:

After a conspiracy to conquer England in which the love of her life Robin Hood dies before her eyes, Marian picks up the cause to lead her people into a pivotal war. She comes to power, charging into a battle that will not only decide the fate of the kingdom but will see her don the mantle of the man she loved. In the process, she rises as a legend herself.

Sounds like they're taking a page out of Snow White and the Huntsman's playbook and giving the female lead much more to do. I didn't really like that movie very much, but hopefully rookie screenwriter Pete Barry has found a fresh way to accomplish a similar goal. I have to say, the idea of Marian becoming the new Robin Hood, and that "character" becoming immortal in a sort of Dread Pirate Roberts type of scenario, sounds super promising to me. What do you all think?

Steven Spielberg Will Direct Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep in Pentagon Papers Film THE POST

Steven Spielberg is set to team up with Tom Hanks once again for a film project called The Post, which will also star Meryl Streep. This is a powerhouse of talent and it will tell the 1971 story of the Washington Post's role in exposing the Pentagon Papers and how "the Post’s editor Ben Bradlee and publisher Kay Graham challenged the federal government over their right to publish them."

According to Deadline, Hanks will take on the role of Bradlee, "the editor who would figure in the movie classic All The President’s Men," and Streep will take on the part of Graham. Thanks to the report, we have some detailed information on the history of the Pentagon Papers:

In an age where rampant web leaks of emails has left it difficult to figure out whether they are fair game or privacy invasion, the Pentagon Papers is the whistle blower equivalent of WWII, in how soldiers felt they were on the side of the angels fighting it. The classified study about the Vietnam War was commissioned by the Defense Department and revealed unreported facts about a secret dramatic escalation of troops and bombings in what was appearing to be an unwinnable war.
Military analyst Daniel Ellsberg, pro-war when he started working on the study at the RAND Corporation, became convinced it should be absorbed to set future policy, and leaked the classified information to the New York Times. That paper published a scathing first installment that charged the Johnson administration had systematically lied to the public and to Congress about Vietnam.
When the incumbent Nixon administration Attorney General John Mitchell and Nixon failed to get the paper to stop, they got a federal court injunction forcing the Times to cease after three installments. The Washington Post grabbed the baton (Ellsberg gave the study to Bradlee) and published more revelations from the 47-volume study. Other papers including the Boston Globe jumped in, and Alaska U.S. Senator Mike Gravel read highlights aloud in a Senate subcommittee hearing. The floodgates had opened, and together the New York Times and Washington Post appealed to the Supreme Court on First Amendment grounds. The justices ruled 6-3 that the government failed to prove a harm to national security and that publication was justified by the First Amendment.
Ellsberg was arrested and charged with conspiracy, espionage and theft of government property. While Ellsberg said he was willing to go to jail to stop an unjust war, charges against him were eventually dropped when the Watergate scandal revealed that staffers at the Nixon White House were involved in unlawful efforts to discredit him by burglarizing the office of his psychiatrist.

I love these kinds of movies! I don't know if you've ever seen All the President's Men, but if you haven't you should because it's a great film! With Spielberg, Hanks, and Streep bringing this new film, The Post, to the big screen, you can bet it's going to be great and it has all the making of a film that will nab an Oscar nomination.

Spielberg is currently in post-production on the Warner Bros. film Ready Player One and is also in pre-production on The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara, which will star Mark Rylance and Oscar Isaac. After he's done with that, he'll get started on The Post

Here's Billy Crystal's Fun Buzz Lightyear Screen Test for Pixar's TOY STORY

Pixar changed the face of animated films forever when they released Toy Story in 1995. Since then, CG animated films have exploded. As you know, Tom Hanks and Tim Allen were ultimately cast in the roles of Woody and Buzz Lightyear, but other actors were considered for the roles. One of those actors was Billy Crystal, who was actually Pixar's original first choice to play Buzz Lightyear. To help see what Buzz would look like with his voice, the animators animated Buzz Lightyear delivering some of Crystal's dialogue from When Harry Met Sally. This was Pixar's Billy Crystal screen test, and you know what? I actually kinda love it!

Crystal has a very different voice than Allen, but as I watched this test video I saw that it fantastically works for the character. You might not all agree with me, but I think Crystal would've been fun as Buzz. I understand why Pixar went with Allen, and he was awesome in the role. I'm just saying that had Crystal voiced Buzz in an alternate universe, I bet it would've been great. Check it out.

Local Superhero Who Calls Himself "The Black Widow" Protects the Streets of Norfolk, Virginia

Ever since Kick-Ass came out back in 2010, we've seen a proliferation of "local superheroes," people who suit up in spandex and set out to protect the cities they live in. Uproxx points us to the latest case study in this phenomenon: a guy in Norfolk, Virginia who wears a Spider-Man-inspired suit and refers to himself as The Black Widow.

The newscaster seems really into this story, going as far as to extend Black Widow's baton on camera. It makes me wonder... since the Black Widow operates under a secret identity and we don't ever see the costumed man in the same shot as the newscaster, what if — you ready for this? — the newscaster IS the Black Widow? What better way to spread the word of your good deeds than to use your access to a local audience to do so? Well, I've convinced myself at this point, so good look trying to prove that they're not the same person now.

Regardless of his identity, though, I hope things turn out better for him than they did for Kick-Ass:

Netflix Is Developing a Medieval Korean Zombie Series Called KINGDOM

As Netflix continues to kick ass with great original series and films, they've recently announced a new series they are developing called Kingdom, and it sounds like it's gonna be awesome!

This is a Korean period zombie thriller that's being directed by Kim Seong-hun (Tunnel). The story is set in Korea’s medieval Joseon period and follows a crown prince who is sent on "a suicide mission to investigate a mysterious outbreak that leads him to a brutal truth that threatens the kingdom."

As a fan of the zombie genre, this sounds like an exciting premise. I especially like the fact that it's set in Medieval Korea. That will give it an incredibly unique flare. Erik Barmack, VP of international originals at Netflix, had this to say in a statement:

"Kingdom captured our imaginations from the moment we read the script with its visual feast of historical drama blended with supernatural fantasy. We are incredibly honored by this rare opportunity of pairing two premier creative minds in Korea- film director Kim Seong-hun and television writer Kim Eun-hee."

The writer of the series added:

“I have been working on Kingdom since 2011. I wanted to write a story that reflects the fears and anxiety of modern times but explored through the lens of a romantic fascination of the historical Joseon period. Working with Netflix helps us to unlock this creative vision for Kingdom and I am excited to further build this unique story with the director for whom I have tremendous respect."

There will be eight episodes total, and they will premiere exclusively on Netflix sometime in 2018.

Relive BATMAN V SUPERMAN's Final Battle in New VFX Reel

We've already seen a handful of VFX reels for Zack Snyder's critically derided Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but let me ask you this: have we ever seen one in which Superman appears to be wearing a thong? We have now, thanks to the team at MPC, who just released a new video that largely focuses on the effects seen in the climactic final battle against Doomsday. Don't believe me? Go to 1:59. That could be a standard template design of the character...but I'd much rather imagine one of MPC's employees giving Superman a thong on purpose. At least then it would indicate that someone working on this movie was interested in having a little bit of fun.

Get a Look at Teri Hatcher on Supergirl, Plus Watch a Teaser for THE FLASH's Musical Episode

It looks like Supergirl fans have some fun stuff to look forward to. First off, Teri Hatcher and Kevin Sorbo are set to turn up in National City in episode 16, “Star-Crossed,” and the promo for the episode (which you can watch below) seems to confirm a pet fan theory that they are playing the King and Queen of Daxam who also happen to be Mon-El’s (Chris Wood) parents, making him Prince of Daxam and possibly throwing a wrench in his blossoming relationship with Kara (Melissa Benoist). Or possibly not. I don’t know his life. “Star-Crossed” airs on March 20.

The next night, March 21, Kara will be heading over to Central City (I assume) to crossover with The Flash’s musical episode, which I am pretty excited about. Last season’s Flash/Supergirl crossover was fantastic, and Benoist has great chemistry with Grant Gustin. They are a treat to watch on a regular episode, and I’m hoping the musical episode kicks everything up a notch. We have a very very brief teaser of that below.

I’ve also included a gallery of photos from “Star-Crossed.” You can look through them and try to decode who Hatcher and Sorbo are playing.

Netflix Chief Says the STRANGER THINGS Premiere Delivers on Everything Fans Want

The season premiere of Netflix's Stranger Things season two is complete, and it will be the beginning of a whole new supernatural adventure for all of our favorite characters. Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said that he and co-founder Reed Hastings have already watched it and that it delivers everything that the fans want! While talking to NME, he said:

"I have just seen the first episode of season two. It’s fantastic – it delivers on everything that every fan wants.
“We have a sense that it’s going to be really big. The reaction and momentum in Netflix internally is building."

There was no doubt that the second season was going to be really big. The first season exploded with popularity, and it's only grown and gotten bigger since it was released. I'm just hoping that whatever they end up doing with season two will be at least as good as season one.

There's been a lot of talk regarding what we can expect to see from season two, but there have been no major plot or story details released. If you want to catch up on everything we do know about the series so far, click here.

We know that there will be new different kinds of horror in season two and that the city of Hawkins will be put in danger. Will (Noah Schnapp) is back from the Upside Down and things aren't quite right with him. Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), Mike (Finn Wolfhard), and Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin) will have some heavy things to deal with, and of course, we'll see the return of Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown).

Stranger Things season two is set to premiere on Halloween this year, and it's going make for one hell of a fun long nine-hour Halloween party!

FARGO Season 3 Teaser Has Our First Good Look at Ewan McGregor and Mary Elizabeth Winstead

$

It feels like it's been forever since season two of Noah Hawley's Coen Brothers-inspired TV series Fargo wrapped up on FX, but we're just a little more than a month away from a brand new season. Season three will see a shift in setting closer to the first season of the show instead of the '70s setting of season two, and after seeing a couple of quick promos a few days ago, we now have the first promo that includes a look at three of this season's stars: Ewan McGregor, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Carrie Coon.

McGregor plays twin brothers named Emmit and Ray Stussy. Emmit is the "Parking Lot King of Minnesota," while Ray (seen in the trailer above) is a parole officer who peaked in high school and blames Emmit for his lot in life. Winstead plays Niki Swango, a “crafty and alluring recent parolee with a passion for competitive bridge playing. Nikki is a woman with a plan, focused on always being at least one move ahead of her opponents.” Meanwhile, Coon (The Leftovers) plays Gloria Burgle, the Eden Valley police chief who's obviously on the opposite side of the law than the other two.

Fargo returns to FX on April 19, 2017, and I can't wait to see how it stacks up against the other two seasons.

Neil Gaiman Shares His Icelandic Inspiration for AMERICAN GODS in a New Doc

While we wait to see Starz' adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods, we have a new doc coming that features Gaiman's journey to Iceland, which was a major inspiration for the author when he was writing the story. This is where the whole idea was sparked and what led him to write it.

Gaiman has shared the first look at the doc, which he calls American Gods: Origins. In it the author travels to Reykjavik, Iceland to discuss how he came up with the idea of American Gods. In the process, he talks about his own personal and professional history and how it lead to the moment of creating American Gods.

He explains that American Gods is a story about American culture and immigration. Part of it was inspired by his own experience of coming to the United States in 1992. He explains that one of the ways for him to understand himself and his place in this world was to write about it. So he did, and in the process, he implemented some real cool Norse Mythology and ended up writing a story about a war between Old and New Gods.

Based on the international best-selling novel by Neil Gaiman, American Gods follows Shadow Moon as he embarks on a road trip across America with the enigmatic conman Mr. Wednesday. On their journey, Shadow discovers that Mr. Wednesday is in fact one of the old gods brought to this country by settlers long ago, who warns of a war brewing between the forgotten old gods of myth and the new American Gods of money, technology and media. And as Shadow finds himself evermore deeply embroiled in this world of gods among men, he has a choice to make. Should he follow Mr. Wednesday into battle and find out more about his own mysterious past or attempt to reconcile with his recently deceased wife?

Brought to the screen by executive producers Bryan Fuller (Hannibal), Michael Green (Heroes) and Gaiman, American Gods stars Ricky Whittle as Shadow Moon, Ian McShane as Mr. Wednesday, Emily Browning as Laura Moon, Pablo Schreiber as Mad Sweeney and Gillian Anderson as Media.

Starz has yet to announce a release date for the documentary, but American Gods debuts April 30th. Check out the trailer for the doc along with a motion poster.

New Set Photos From MARY POPPINS RETURNS, Including Our First Look at Lin-Manuel Miranda

We just saw our first look at Emily Blunt in Rob Marshall's Mary Poppins Returns a few days ago, but thanks to Twitter user Gordon Harris (via Playbill), we now also have our first glimpse of Lin-Manuel Miranda's lamplighter character, Jack. Additionally, there are a few more set pics that give us a look at Blunt's Poppins from the front (as opposed to the teasing reverse angle in the movie's official first image).

When was the last time you watched the original Mary Poppins? I hadn't seen it in probably 15 or 20 years before rewatching it last year, and I was surprised to discover that it holds up well. I imagine a lot of you will want to revisit it before the new movie comes out in 2018.

Mary Poppins Returns stars Blunt, Miranda, Meryl Streep, Emily Mortimer, Colin Firth, Angela Lansbury, Ben Whishaw, Julie Walters, and Dick Van Dyke, and arrives in theaters on Christmas Day, 2018.

Set in 1930s depression-era London (the time period of the original novels), Mary Poppins Returns is drawn from the wealth of material in PL Travers’ additional seven books. In the story, Michael (Whishaw) and Jane (Mortimer) are now grown up, with Michael, his three children and their housekeeper, Ellen (Walters), living on Cherry Tree Lane. After Michael suffers a personal loss, the enigmatic nanny Mary Poppins (Blunt) re-enters the lives of the Banks family, and, along with the optimistic street lamplighter Jack (Miranda), uses her unique magical skills to help the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives. Mary Poppins also introduces the children to a new assortment of colorful and whimsical characters, including her eccentric cousin, Topsy (Streep).

New Photos From BRIGHT, Which Will Smith Says Features "The Jackie Robinson of Orcs"

By now, I'm sure you've seen the first trailer for Bright, David Ayer's new film starring Will Smith and Joel Edgerton as inter-species partners at the L.A.P.D. Netflix has apparently decided to handle its marketing campaign as if the events of the movie are actually happening in real life; they sent over a press release titled "The First Ever Orc Joins The South Central Police Force" and included a few new images from the movie as well. Here's the press release in full:

Today, the South Central Los Angeles Police Force announced that Nicolas Jakoby, the first ever Orc Police Officer, joined the department solidifying their commitment to diversity and their acceptance of all communities and races. Jakoby will be partnering with the esteemed Human Officer Scott Ward and providing much needed insight into the Orc community in the Los Angeles area.
"Orcs have been a part of our society for over a millennia and we welcome all who are ready and willing to serve on the force. Jakoby will be an excellent partner to Ward," said Captain Perez.
Bright 1.jpg
Bright 2.jpg

Edgerton is the one under all the orc makeup as Jakoby, while Smith is playing Officer Ward. The two actors spoke a bit about the film to EW:

“I love how bizarre it is,” Smith said. “I’ve been saying it’s Training Day — a gritty LA cop drama, the darkness and handheld grittiness — meets Lord of the Rings. There’s orcs and fairies and elves, mean-ass elves.”
“I am the first orc, under a diversity program, to be allowed into the police force,” Edgerton explains. His fellow officers do not welcome him with open arms. “I’m under investigation already for an incident that involved an orc who should have been apprehended but managed to escape. The feeling is that I looked after my own kind first and neglected to do my job as a result.”
“He’s like the Jackie Robinson of orcs,” Smith says. “He has to make it go right, or other orcs won’t have a shot. So he’s taking on the social responsibility of being a good cop, with the weight of his people on his shoulders.”

There are a few more quotes at EW, so I encourage you to head over there if you're interested in hearing about every last detail.

Bright hits Netflix this December. Are you intrigued?
