Charlize Theron Gets Back in Spy Mode with Universal Thriller NEED TO KNOW

$

Last year, we learned that Charlize Theron was set to star in a spy thriller called The Coldest City from the directors of John Wick. That project is still on, but in the meantime, the Oscar-winning actress has locked down an entirely different spy thriller.

Deadline reports that she'll star in and produce Need to Know, a CIA suspense movie based on an upcoming novel by writer Karen Cleveland. The author has apparently worked at the CIA as an analyst for the past few years, so it sounds like she's using that work experience to tell an exciting story, and Universal has secured the film rights.

The thriller is about a wife and mother who works as a CIA analyst. One morning while digitally searching files in hopes of unmasking a Russian sleeper cell in the U.S., she makes a shocking discovery that threatens her job, her family and her life.

A Russian sleeper cell in the U.S.? What a ridiculous concept! It's not like our president is currently embroiled in an unprecedented scandal with Russia or anything, so this is exactly the kind of ludicrous escapism the American public will be able to smile and laugh at when it eventually comes to theaters. This won't hit too close to home at all. Not one bit.

New Chewbacca Joonas Suotamo Releases Heartfelt Letter to Fans

With former Chewbacca Peter Mayhew growing older and Disney moving forward with more and more Star Wars films, actor Joonas Suotamo has recently received the full time mantle of playing the Wookiee on screen. i09 writes the actor, both ecstatic and grateful, took to Twitter to share the news with fans of Star Wars:

In case Twitter is blocked, or you can't read the text without leaving the site, here it is in full:

Mayhew, who not too long ago had knee surgery, is now physically disabled and shared the role with Suotamo during Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Now, with work on the Han Solo film underway, Suotamo has officially gotten the title. I like that Joonas took the time to acknowledge Mayhew as well as fans in light of his great news. It shows a tremendous amount of respect to all parties and shows me the role is in the right hands.

LOGAN Director James Mangold Reveals Original Idea for the Film

$

Logan director James Mangold recently sat down with ScreenRant and shared his original idea for the film that would eventually shape the premise for the story. Surprisingly, it was a "family" dynamic that Mangold was searching for the film:

"A couple months after we wrapped, I had this idea, it was originally that Charles [Xavier] and Logan were hiding out in a Kentucky bourbon, an abandoned bourbon factory and that he was in a tank, an abandoned tank in a bourbon factory. The idea occurred to me to make a movie about family and the idea of using, I kept doing more and more research. The Greg Kyle “Innocence Lost” series about X-23 caught my attention and the idea of doing a movie in which we find Logan with a daughter seemed like a really interesting family dynamic – caring for ailing dad and then discovering you have a kid. Particularly for a character like Logan, who is so loathed to having any intimate connections with anyone, it seemed like the ultimate set of obstacles to put in front of him, much bigger than a super villain from another planet."

I totally agree that it's much more entertaining to see Wolverine struggle emotionally than it is against a massive supervillain. The Wolverine had a lot of balls out action with little emotion and that, in my opinion, makes it the weakest of the films in his franchise. I also like the fact that Mangold points out that professor Xavier is a bit of a father figure to the character, and that the film will have that feeling. I mean, technically, Logan is older than Charles so it would make more sense if they were like brothers...but let's not dive too deep into that.

Logan opens in theaters March 3rd.

Details Revealed on What Rekindles Thor and Loki's Brotherhood in THOR: RAGNAROK

Later this year, Marvel is releasing Thor: Ragnarok, and there's no doubt in my mind that this is going to be the most epic Thor movie yet. Everything that I've heard and seen of the film so far has been exciting, especially the new elements of Hulk being added to the mix and the villain Hela finally making her MCU debut!

One of the things that I've enjoyed most about this side of the MCU is watching the relationship between Thor and Loki. It's such a complicated relationship, which is what makes things interesting. It's fun to watch them fight each other and it's fun to watch them join forces and fight together.

During a recent interview with IGN, Tom Hiddleston talks about the relationship of Thor and Loki and reveals how their brotherhood bond is rekindled. Of course, things don't start out very smoothly:

"At the beginning of Ragnarok, Thor has a lot of questions, and Loki - true to form - is not that forthcoming with many answers. But hammers are involved and the stakes are raised."

Then Cate Blanchett's Hela, The Goddess of Death comes into play and things take a turn. The brothers are forced to reunite to fight her to save Asgard. The actor goes on to say:

"Cate Blanchett is playing the goddess of death who brings destruction in her wake. It’s the kind of destruction that both Thor and Loki have never seen, on a scale of terror they’ve never ever seen before. So, they fall back on their brotherhood fractured though it is to see what they can do to stop her."

It'll be good to see Loki and Thor fight alongside each other to save their home. I really hope that there's another moment between Loki and Hulk! The last time they saw each other Hulk smashed Loki around like a puny god. It'd be great to see them come face-to-face again. This time, however, they could actually fight together! That's if Hulk actually ends up traveling to Asgard with Thor.

See How Wes Anderson Was Influenced by Alfred Hitchcock Films and Other Classic Cinema

Wes Anderson is one of the most distinctive directors of all time. Love him or hate him, that's fine, but if you were to watch two minutes of any one of his movies, you'd instantly know he directed it because he's developed a very specific style over the course of his career. That's not something you can say about every director.

Editor Candice Drouet put together this cool video (via Indiewire) that compares some of Anderson's films with the classic cinema that inspired him. She says "references claimed by Anderson himself," so none of these similarities are accidental. Check it out:

There's a Mass Suicide Epidemic in New Trailer for the Netflix Thriller THE DISCOVERY

Netflix has released a new trailer for their upcoming intense thriller The Discovery. The story is set in a world the afterlife that has been 100% proven to exist. This starts a disturbing suicide epidemic with millions of people killing themselves to get to the next plane of existence. This trailer offers some new footage from the film and even teases some of the twists and turns of the story.

I had the opportunity to see the film at Sundance, and I thought it was great! I'll have a review up on the site in the near future. But I will say that I was completely immersed in the story and invested in the characters that we are introduced to. I also thought the film's concept of what happens after you die was interesting. It definitely went in a direction I wasn't expecting.

The film was directed Charlie McDowell and has a fantastic cast that includes Jason Segel, Rooney Mara, Robert Redford, Jesse Plemons, and Riley Keough. The film will be released on Netflix on March 31st, and it's definitely worth checking out.

Batman Fan Trailer Imagines a Fourth DARK KNIGHT Film With The Riddler

I've got a fun fan-made trailer for you to check out today that shows us what a fourth Christopher Nolan Dark Knight film might look like if the Riddler were the main villain. It's called The Dark Knight: Enigma, and it imagines Casey Affleck in the role of the villain. I would have loved to see Nolan's take on the Riddler! He's such a sadistic villain that I think Nolan could've had fun with. It's kind of a shame that it never happened. The fan trailer was created by stryder HD, who included the following note with it:

What if there was a 4th Christopher Nolan Batman film? David Goyer said that at the premiere of The Dark Knight, Warner Bros. executives were already talking about a villain for The Dark Knight Rises — ‘it’s gonna be The Riddler, and we want it to be Leonardo DiCaprio…’”Imagine if this movie was made! This trailer includes Casey Affleck as The Riddler. I think he would be good, especially with his recent Oscar nomination. This is a much updated trailer from my original version with new vfx, scenes, logo and much more!

The fan trailer is very green. I don't think Nolan would have made a film that is so green.

STAR WARS: AFTERMATH Book Potentially Contains Clues to Supreme Leader Snoke's Origin

Star Wars novels are dropping more clues to the origin of the mysterious First Order leader Supreme Leader Snoke. The series Star Wars: Aftermath, in particular, has been dropping some hints regarding where and who Snoke could be. Obviously, there are some spoilers below, so read at your own risk.

It's now known that Snoke has been around long enough to witness the rise and fall of The Empire. The Star Wars novels have been focusing on the contingency plan the Empire had in place should the emperor fall, and it has revealed some interesting stuff. Essentially, the emperor set up a station on Jakku that had plans and resources to allow a select few of The Empire to set up and try again somewhere new, but something began happening there before the Empire fell. Palpatine began to feel a presence reaching out to him that only he could feel. More leaders of the Sith began to have visions broadcasted by this being, which could potentially be Snoke.

It basically sounds like Snoke is the Yoda of The Dark Side, but potentially even more powerful. Hear more about what's happening in the novels and how it could relate to Snoke in the video below. Thanks, Slashfilm for the heads up.

Jamie Chung Cast in the Role of Blink in Bryan Singer’s X-MEN TV Pilot

Sucker Punch and Gotham co-star Jamie Chung has joined the cast of Bryan Singer's upcoming X-Men series pilot being produced by Fox.

According to Variety, Chung will be taking on the role of Blink, a.k.a. Clarice Fong, a mutant character from the comics who has purple skin and the ability to teleport. She's described as being "sarcastic, lively and a bit of a tomboy." It's also said the her "naturally strong exuberance has taken a hit after a sudden and traumatic upheaval of her life. As she adjusts to the new people and places that are suddenly 'home,' she is slowly becoming herself again." Here are some additional details about her powers:

Blink is a mutant with the ability to create teleportation portals that can move objects or groups of people short or vast distances. Her limit is not known, but she has teleported as far as from Earth to the moon. She uses her powers offensively by focusing her teleportation ability creating spears which she can throw with high accuracy. The spears will expand into portals at her will, teleporting all or a portion of an enemy or object, or merely stunning them and she usually keeps a quiver of spears on her back. She is very skilled with her teleportation powers, and has on several occasions defeated much more powerful opponents by redirecting their own powers back at them. Her teleporting makes a characteristic 'blink' sound, hence her name.
She has proven to be a very skilled hand to hand fighter, having honed her skills by training with Sabretooth. She is also extremely agile.

Blink is a great and interesting character, and it's awesome that she has made her way into the series. Chung is also a solid actress who will fantastically fit the character.

The untitled X-Men series will focus on two ordinary parents who discover their children possess mutant powers. Forced to go on the run from a hostile government, the family joins up with an underground network of mutants and must fight to survive. I imagine Blink will be a part of this underground network of mutants.

Tom Hiddleston Says THOR: RAGNAROK Will Feature the Funniest Depiction of Thor Yet

We've heard that Thor: Ragnarok is going to tell one of Marvel's darkest stories yet, but that doesn't mean we aren't going to get some fun comedy out of it! After all, the movie is being directed by Taika Waititi, who is a hilarious!

Well, it seems that humor has definitely rubbed off on Chris Hemsworth's Thor. According to Tom Hiddleston, who plays Loki in the film, Thor: Ragnarok will feature the funniest depiction that we've seen of Thor in the MCU yet! He tells Fandango:

"Taika Waititi is such a spirited, hilarious individual, and he and Chris [Hemsworth] became very fast friends, and what was great for me was to see their friendship kind of blossom and they brought out the best in each other and started making stuff up. I can confidently say this will be the funniest depiction of the character of Thor that you've ever seen. I personally have known for almost 10 years that Chris Hemsworth is hilarious. I think this go-round will be his chance."

There's been a lot of Thor humor through the course of the film in the MCU. Marvel and their creative team have always tried to bring a fun element to the character to bring laughs, and it's cool to learn the best and funniest stuff is yet to come. We've gotten a little taste of that new humor thanks to the shorts that have been released involving Thor and his roommate Darryl that you can watch here and here. As soon as I learned Waititi was going to direct this movie, I knew it was going give us something entertaining.

In Marvel Studios’ ‘Thor: Ragnarok’, Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok—the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization—at the hands of an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela. But first he must survive a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger—the Incredible Hulk!

Thor: Ragnarok arrives in theaters on November 3, 2017.

RESIDENT EVIL 6 Leon S. Kennedy Action Figure Review - Sideshow Collectibles

I'm a huge fan of the Resident Evil video game franchise. I've played every game they've made and it is aways a fun and entertaining experience. Needless to say, I was incredibly stoked when Sideshow Collectibles sent me their 1/6th scale collectible action figure of franchise character Leon S. Kennedy from Resident Evil 6!

They did an incredible job bringing this video game character to life. Most of what we've reviewed for Sideshow has been Star Wars and superheroes based on the appearance of actors. What's so cool about this character is that it comes from the design of a video game and it's awesomely brought to life in a physical form.

The other thing that's different about this is that he's not wearing any kind of superhero costume. He's just dressed in regular clothes that includes a couple of shirts, a black leather jacket, some pants, and boots. Now, just because these are just regular clothes doesn't mean Hot Toys is going to skimp out on the fine details of them because they don't. They made an incredible figure and the detail — especially on the leather jacket — is superb.

The Leon figure comes complete with a pistol, two wing shooters, a sniper rifle, a shotgun, and of course, a freakin' Rocket Launcher! It's the kind of arsenal that John Wick would be proud of.

Below you'll find a series of photos that I took of the figure. I had a little fun playing around with the lighting of it in the dark to give it that classic Resident Evil horror vibe. I also did a Facebook live video review of it during a dark and stormy night. Unfortunately, it didn't turn out very well because the video was glitching due to a new app I was trying out.

If you're a Resident Evil fan then this is a figure you've got to try and get your hands on., You can get on a waiting list for it here.

Brie Larson Says CAPTAIN MARVEL Is a Bridge Between Two Worlds and Her Look Won't Please Everyone

$

Marvel's Captain Marvel doesn't come out until 2019 and it still has yet to find a director, but that's not stopping Brie Larson from preparing for the role and talking about it. Larson is set to play Carol Danvers, a.k.a. Captain Marvel, in the film, and this is the first film in the MCU that will focus on a female superhero.

The character is expected to make her big screen debut in Avengers: Infinity War, which is currently shooting. There's no confirmation that she will be in the film yet, but we know it's a strong possibility.

While talking to IGN, the actress expressed her feelings about how important the character is to her. She seems very passionate and sincere when talking about taking on this role and in the process explained that the character will be a bridge between two worlds.

“I find it's really hard for me to condense what she means to me. I was once a young girl and I was confused by what a hero was and what I wanted to be when I grow up and what was important to me. And so, I think it's so complicated growing up and to attempt to become a symbol of truth and navigating through all the weird questions of growing up feels so, I’m getting emotional just talking about this, it feels so important to me. When it comes to her, I mean just the fact that she can be a bridge between two worlds, that she can go between Earth and space and that her own personal place is in this little area between where Earth ends and space begins and that’s only hers is so moving to me. I’m just inspired.”

Captain Marvel is sure to inspire a new generation of young girls. I have two young girls of my own, and it's always nice when they find female superheroes that they can look up to and admire. When talking about Captain Marvel's appearance, she says that it won't please everyone. She explains:

“I can’t say anything… I feel like this is a big conversation and every day I have people yelling at me on Twitter like you better have long hair, or you better have a mohawk, or you better wear the helmet, or you better not wear the helmet, so someone’s going to be mad.”

Ya gotta love those rabid fans! The one thing those kinds of fans have to understand is that Marvel has yet to let us down on the costume and superhero designs of their films. They always get it right, and I imagine that will be the same for Captain Marvel.

The movie is currently be written by Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Meg LaFauve (The Good Dinosaur). It's set to be released on March 8th, 2019.

Parody Trailer Imagines David Lynch Directing LA LA LAND

This would be the only way La La Land doesn't get an Oscar! Could you imagine the snubs this film would get if it were directed by David Lynch?! Cinefix can, and created a truly bizarre take on the musical that will make you feel as though this film is legit! It made me uncomfortable, which is what Lynch is all about. Check it out below. Also, let's talk about what a shame it is that Lynch has never won an Oscar.

Obi-Wan Kenobi Quoted Jedi Scripture When Lying to Luke Skywalker About his Father

$

Some interesting new information has come to light regarding Obi-Wan Kenobi's little white lie to Luke Skywalker regarding his father. Obi-Wan flat out told Luke that Darth Vader killed his father, then when Luke found out the truth that his dad was Vader, he confronted force ghost Kenobi and was like, "What the hell!?"

Do you remember Kenobi's response? He told him that everything he said was true, "from a certain point of view." Well, any lie can be looked at as truth from a certain point of view! It doesn't make it right, Kenobi! Or does it?

Turns out, the new Star Wars novel Aftermath: Empire's End provides a Jedi religious basis for why Kenobi lied to Luke about Vader's true identity. This is officially canon now as it was approved by the Lucasfilm story group.

Empire's End reveals a passage from the Journal of the Whills, which is a book in the Star Wars universe that helps explain the light and the dark sides of the force. This is pretty much like Jedi scripture. The Whills were originally supposed to be the immortal beings who were narrating the Star Wars saga, but George Lucas ended up ditching that idea.

The Whills were referenced in some deleted scenes from the prequel trilogy, and even Donnie Yen’s character Chirrut Imwe from Rogue One was part of a religious order called the Guardians of the Whills.

Anyway, there's a passage in Empire's End from the Journal of Whills that focuses on what truth really is and even includes the saying "from a certain point of view".

"The truth in our soul
Is that nothing is true.
The question of life
Is what then do we do?
The burden is ours
To penance, we hew.
The Force binds us all
From a certain point of view."

So, as you can see, Kenobi was just quoting scripture when he was lying to Luke. I just couldn't help but laugh at the fact that they actually made Kenobi's whole lame excuse behind the big lie a part of Jedi religious doctrine!

Uma Thurman Says Turning Down LORD OF THE RINGS Was a Mistake

$

Uma Thurman says turning down Lord of the Rings was the "worst decision she ever made." The actress appeared on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert and talked about why she turned down the role of Eowyn:

"It was a very long time ago, and I do consider it one of the worst decisions I ever made. I had just had my first child and, I dunno, I was a little house bound. It's really definitely a regret"

Can't blame Uma for putting family first. The role of Eowyn then went to Miranda Otto, who has had a mildly successful career since. If Uma Thurman had taken the role, there's a good chance she would not have been available for Kill Bill, and that's a timeline I don't want to experience. I think we can all agree we would rather have Kill Bill than Uma in LOTR, right? Check out the clip and the rest of her interview below.

Adult Swim released the first clip from the fifth and final season of Samurai Jack, and you're gonna love it! This is a clip from the first episode of the series, and in it, we get to see Jack kick some robotic bug ass! The badass clip is filled with the awesomely glorious action that we'd expect to see from the series. As you'll see, they've even taken the action to a new level. The official logline for the series explains:

It’s been 50 years since we saw Samurai Jack and time has not been kind to him. Aku has destroyed every time portal and Jack has stopped aging, a side effect of time travel. It seems he is cursed to just roam the land for all eternity.

I remember seeing an early animatic of this footage at Comic-Con last year and creator Genndy Tartakovsky excitedly narrated the whole thing. Seeing it in its completed animated form is pretty rad.

Samurai Jack premieres Saturday, March 11th at 11pm ET/PT on Adult Swim. Thanks to EW for the video.
