Hear Mark Hamill's Thoughts About STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI Title

$
0
0

It still remains to be seen exactly what Star Wars: The Last Jedi means. Some have pointed out that the plural of Jedi is "Jedi," so it could conceivably be talking about Luke Skywalker and Rey, whom many presume Luke will train in the new film. Thanks to the language difference, the Brazilian Star Wars account hinted that it might be referencing just Luke when it tweeted the news yesterday, but they almost immediately deleted that tweet and replaced it with the English version of the title, which doesn't have a gender (or group) association.

As we all continue to parse the mystery and speculate about the future, the AP (via /Film) sat down with star Mark Hamill and asked him what he thinks about the new title. Turns out he's known about it for quite some time. What do you all think about it?

The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15, 2017.

VERONICA MARS Creator Believes We'll Eventually See a Miniseries Revival

If you're a fan of Veronica Mars, you'll be happy to hear that creator Rob Thomas and star Kristen Bell still haven't given up on bringing Veronica Mars back as a series. I loved this show, and the crowd-funded movie they made back in 2014 actually turned out to be really great. I'd be extremely happy to see the show get a revival ,and according to Thomas, it seems like it's only a matter of time. We just have to wait for everyone's schedules to align.

While speaking at the TCA winter press tour, Thomas talked about bringing the series back on a streaming service like Netflix or Hulu. He said:

“We are definitely striving to do it again. And this time around we’re not going to ask the audience to pony up for anything.”

As of right now, he and Bell are busy with other projects, and that is currently the main hold up of making this revival happen.

“We need to find a window where we could both do it. When actors are on network shows, most standard contracts will give them outs for, like, one episode a year of guest-starring. But then there are also sometimes outs if you’re doing something that is non-competitive. Would NBC consider a Veronica Mars thing on, like, Netflix non-competitive? We have not figured that out yet.”

As of right now, Bell is starring in the NBC series The Good Place, and Thomas is the executive producer of the CW hit iZombie. He's also working on developing the series Lost Boys. He said:

“Also, I’m developing Lost Boys. If those things weren’t happening, we might be closer to a Veronica Mars [series]. The Good Place, I think, is going to be on NBC for a while. And if Lost Boys goes, finding that window will be tricky. But we both want to do it.”

Thomas thenshared what he'd like to do with the series and bets on it happening sometime in the future.

“Kristen and I both want to figure out some way we could do a six-episode Veronica Mars mystery. If I were a betting man, I bet that it will happen. I just don’t know when it will be.”

As a fan of the show, I would love to see this happen! Unfortunately, for now we're just going to have to wait awhile.

Oscars 2017: Predictions After This Morning's Announcement

$

The Academy Award nominations were announced early this morning, and you can read Joey's thoughts about them over at that link. I wanted to offer a few other quick observations before I get to my predicitions: Mel Gibson seems to have gotten a pass from the Academy for his extra-curricular behavior because his film Hacksaw Ridge secured six nominations (including a Best Director nod), Moonlight thankfully got some well-deserved recognition with eight nominations, and Hidden Figures earned three nominations, including one for Best Picture. I was happy to see Arrival, my favorite film of 2016, with eight nominations, but disappointed that Meryl Streep got a Best Actress nomination for Florence Foster Jenkins over Amy Adams' incredible work in Arrival.

Below, you'll find the full list of nominees with my prediction for the winner in bold text. These are not necessarily the movies that I personally want to win, but the ones that I think will win based on my assessment of how the Academy has voted in the past and trying to gauge how much influence the new crop of talent that was added to the organization last year might have. We'd also like to hear your predictions in the comments below.

Square Enix Unleashes Insane WOLVERINE Action Figure

You've gotta see what Square Enix has done with their Marvel Universe Variant Play Arts Kai Wolverine action figure. This thing is absolutely insane! We post a ton of their comic book inspired figures here on the site, and this is easily one of the best ones they've released. It's a masterpiece.

Armed with sharp claws made of adamantium, the hardest metal in the world, and a healing factor that allows for superhuman recovery, X-Men hero Wolverine enters the Marvel Variant Series!

Painstaking attention to textural detail can be seen in this Wolverine’s costume and burly physique, from the hard surfaces of the armor, to the organic feel of the skin, down to the bulging veins in his arms.

Shadows are painted in to highlight the molded features, while the paint, chipped here and there off his armor, hints at the many battles in his past. In addition to the interchangeable hands and head, a Japanese katana adds to the variety of poseable actions.

Figure includes display stand.

The Wolverine figure is scheduled to be released in July and is priced at $149.99. You can pre-order it here.

THE ASSIGNMENT Trailer: Michelle Rodriguez Plays a Hitman Who Undergoes an Unwanted Sex Change

$

I've seen high concept movies before, but The Assignment takes things to an entirely different level. This is a mainstream film in which the lead character is a hitman who seems to botch a job, and as retaliation, the mob gets a doctor (Sigourney Weaver) to perform a sex change operation on him, turning him into a woman (Michelle Rodriguez). She's pretty pissed off about this — as you might imagine — so naturally, she goes out for revenge. Oh yeah, and it's directed by none other than Walter Hill, who helmed The Warriors and 48 Hrs.

Yes, this is a real movie, and this is a real trailer:

Thanks to BMD for pointing this one out to us. I can't wait to read the hot takes about this one. It doesn't have a release date yet, but we'll keep you posted when we hear more.

Video Essay Explores the Weirdness of BEE MOVIE Memes and Why Certain Source Material Becomes Meme-ified

$

Since I spend most of my time writing about movies and television, I don't have a ton of time to keep up with meme culture. But apparently there's been an influx of memes involving Bee Movie recently (actually, this might have been going on for years, as far as I know), and PBS Idea Channel is here to explain why that particular movie has become a go-to film for meme-ificiation. And why do people consistently use "Smash Mouth" or "Smooth" in ridiculous meme videos these days? This video tries to get to the bottom of that, too. I found the results to be enlightening, and in a nice twist, this video itself has become an entry in the bizarre Bee Movie meme subculture because it's the entire movie, but every time the word "bee" is said, the video essay plays in its entirety. Luckily for those of us who only want to watch the essay once, the first instance of the word "bee" happens almost instantly.

Cool ROGUE ONE Easter Eggs and Behind the Scenes Moments Revealed in Long Video

We all knew Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was awesome, so is it any surprise all the behind the scenes work and obscure Easter eggs are awesome as well? It's actually pretty incredible when you think about how much work went into this movie and the small details that we're just now learning about the film that make it so much better! For example, did you know that that if Leia had never been wrapped up in the Vader confrontation after the battle of Scariff she would've arrived on Tatooine to pick up Obi-Wan Kenobi? It makes you wonder if Luke would've ever gone with Kenobi had Leia never been captured!

I would like to think Ben would've sought Luke out anyway. There had to be a reason he was not far off besides protection. I guess the only real consequence of Leia being kidnapped is it took much longer for her to discover she has a long-lost sibling!

Hear about that and other crazy obscure things you want to know about the film below. Big thanks to i09 for bringing this series to our attention as I had no idea it existed!

For those of you hoping that Justice League Dark would be grim, geez you got your wish. In this seven minute clip we see a woman commit mass vehicular manslaughter, a man attempt to murder his wife and children, and a woman throw her baby off of a church! All these humans are under some hallucinogen that make them think their loved ones are evil demons, and I'm guessing it's up to Justice League Dark to solve that mystery. Watch the clip and find the film February 7th.

The latest promo for Kong: Skull Island has a pretty glaring reference to Godzilla if you're looking for it! Check out the latest promo and listen to John Goodman in the beginning...

In the most recent American film, the 1954 nuclear test bombings were aimed at Godzilla, which provides a direct confirmation that both of these creatures exist within the same universe. Of course, we know that a Kong vs. Godzilla film is on the way down the line, but it's nice to see this film is already establishing that link early on! Perhaps we will see some King Kong references in the next Godzilla film, Godzilla: King of Monsters, which is set for 2019. I think that's a safe bet!

Fox Officially Orders New X-MEN Series From Bryan Singer

$

0

Earlier this month we learned there was a new X-Men series coming and that it would take place in the X-Men cinematic universe. Well, Fox has officially ordered the pilot for the series from producer Bryan Singer, and they've hired Matt Nix (Burn Notice) to write and produce it.

According to Variety, the pilot "will focus on two ordinary parents who discover their children possess mutant powers. Forced to go on the run from a hostile government, the family joins up with an underground network of mutants and must fight to survive."

This is the second X-Men TV project to be picked up by Fox. The first one is the upcoming series Legion, which looks fantastic! These series are a co-production between Marvel TV and FX Productions.

It's pretty cool that Fox is finally venturing into the TV world with the X-Men franchise and I'm excited to see how this next project comes together. It's going to be different from Legion, though, because Legion kind of stands on its own. Legion creator Noah Hawley recently talked about the series and said:

“With the X-Men comics, there are a lot of alt universes, so that has allowed me some leeway. And obviously it’s a sort of origin story for David, but none of the other characters that I’ve surrounded him with are from the comics. It’s sort of an invented world.”

The new X-men series will be produced by Lauren Shuler Donner, Bryan Singer, Simon Kinberg, Jeph Loeb, and Jim Chory.

Sundance Review: A Woman Has a Psychotic Break and Acts Like a Dog in BITCH

$

sundance-review-a-woman-has-a-psychotic-break-and-acts-like-a-dog-in-bitch-social.jpg

Bitch is a very weird and uncomfortable film to watch, but it's also unique and a pretty jacked up kind of feel good movie.

The film starts out with a wife and mother named Jill (Marianna Palka) who is obviously not happy with her seemingly "perfect family life" as the first scene features her putting a belt around her neck and trying to hang herself from a dining room ceiling fan. Yeah, this is not your normal feel good movie. This is a pretty dark film that also happens to be a twisted comedy.

The woman survives her suicide attempt when the ceiling fan breaks. She then moves on with her life with a bunch of whining kids and a cheating husband. As we see her dealing with the pressures of life one day she has a psychotic break and starts acting like a rabid dog, and the family is forced to deal with the messed up situation.

They keep her down in the basement living in her own feces. It's absolutely awful, but she won't let anyone come near her without barking at them or trying to bite them.

The husband, Bill, who is played by Jason Ritter, is kind an asshole who really knows nothing about being a dad even though he has three kids. He's a very proud and selfish individual and is forced to learn what it takes to be a real husband and father. He reluctantly steps up to the challenge, and with the help of his sister-in-law, played by Jaimie King, they try to help Jill and be a real family again.

This was a hard movie for me to wrap my brain around because the subject matter of a mom turning into a dog because of the pressures of her life was so weird and unsettling. But the story was built around this broken family unit who comes together to fix themselves as they are trying to help Jill while she's a dog.

At first, I didn't like this movie. It left me with an uncomfortable feeling, but the more I thought about the more positive aspects of the film started to reveal themselves, and after all the chaos and hell that the characters had to go through, it did end on a sweet, uplifting note.

The acting in the film was fantastic! Ritter fit this role perfectly, and King gave one of the best performances of her career.

This movie is definitely not for everyone, but if it sounds like something you might think you'll enjoy then check it out.

Rian Johnson Shares Photo Tease of the Opening Crawl for STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI

rian-johnson-shares-photo-tease-of-the-opening-crawl-for-star-wars-the-last-jedi

Director Rian Johnson released shared a very cool behind-the-scene photo teasing the opening crawl for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The title was revealed earlier this week, and I absolutely love it. There's been a lot of speculation about who The Last Jedi is, and it's likely either Luke Skywalker or a collective group of Jedi.

At this point, we'll just have to be patient for the answers we are seeking. The photo was posted on Instagram and it came with the following caption:

“Felt so good to drop this into the cut this morning."

I guess that means he had to wait until the title was actually revealed before he could even include it in the opening crawl. That's pretty crazy, but Lucasfilm has their rules and regulations for keeping their shit secret!

I just want to watch the movie now, but we've gotta wait until December 17th! It's gonna be a long year.

New STRANGER THINGS Season 2 Details on Sean Astin's Character and the Timeline

$

0

Stranger Things season two is currently shooting and while fans wait to see what's in store, we've seen little bits of information revealed, and we have some new details to share with you today.

During an interview with HollywoodLife, David Harbour (Jim Hopper) dropped a few hints about the series during the Fan2Sea Comic-Con cruise. During the conversation, he revealed the timeline, saying that it takes place a year after the events of the first season.

“It’s a year later in the story, so there are several things that happened last year, like Will has come back. There are certain people in the town that know what happened, and then certain people that don’t know what happened. So there’s a lot of fall out with who knows what.”

It sounds like things are going to be getting very interesting in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana. We know one of the main things that the town will be reeling over is the disappearance of Barb, and there will be justice for her. He also confirmed Sean Astin's role in the series as Joyce Byers' (Winona Ryder) new boyfriend.

“We have Sean Astin… he’s Winona’s new boyfriend… much to the chagrin to the Chief of Police.”

So that's going to cause some interesting tension between these characters. I wonder if that tension will build into some kind of fight between Harbour and Astin. That's probably going to be the least of everyone's worries when the shit hits the fan again, and we know it's going to hit the fan, otherwise there wouldn't even be a second season!

A Remake of Clint Eastwood's EVERY WHICH WAY BUT LOOSE Is Coming

$

0

Have you ever seen Every Which Way But Loose? The 1978 comedy starred Clint Eastwood at the top of his game, and fell right in the middle of a stint of badass roles as Man With No Name and Dirty Harry. Eastwood plays a truck driver who participates in bareknuckle boxing on the side to bring in some extra cash, and he's best friends with an orangutan named Clyde. Not only is this a 100% real film, but — you guessed it — Hollywood is remaking it.

According to Deadline, original director James Fargo is producing the remake and hand-picked its director, an up-and-coming filmmaker named Anthony G. Cohen who directed a little-seen movie called The Sex Trip. Filming starts this spring, but there's no word about casting yet. At this point, I'm no longer surprised with remake news. When Hollywood is remaking a movie about a guy and his orangutan fighting their way across the country, all bets are off.

Review: Jordan Peele's GET OUT Is a Horror Comedy Masterpiece

$

Jordan Peele of Key & Peele went out and made himself a crazy horror-comedy called Get Out and it is incredibly fun entertainment!

I was intrigued by the first trailer for the film, and it looked creepy as hell. I was blown away when I saw that it was written and directed by Peele because it was a little odd to see that this funny comedian had gone out and made a horror film, but he did an incredibly awesome job! The trailer looked so dark and disturbing I wasn't expecting much humor, but this film had Peele's comedy style all over it. The story was set around a very cool and disturbing concept that is filled with some really interesting and unexpected twists.

The basic story follows a black man named Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) and his white girlfriend Rose (Allison Williams) as they embark on a trip to meet her parents, played by Bradley Whitford and Catherine Kenner. Things seem fine at first, but then some eerie things start to happen, and Chris notices that something's not right. As the story unfolds, he starts to worry and tries to figure out what the hell is going on, especially with the black servants who are living at the house, who just seem completely off and are acting super strange. As you might expect, there's a lot of awkward black and white tension going on.

Things escalate into complete insanity when Chris uncovers what he's actually dealing with and shit hits the fan in the craziest, most unexpected ways!

Mind you, this is all mixed with uncomfortable and comedic moments that had me and the rest of the audience busting up with laughter. Most of the comedy relief came from Chris' best friend, played by LilRel Howery. This guy was hilarious!

I don't want to get into any other story details or plot points because there are a lot of things about this movie that should be kept a surprise. What happens at the end of this film I wasn't expecting at all, and I loved the shocking brutality of it all!

The trailer gives you a good sense of the tone of the film and gives you a basic premise, but there's so much more going on and it involves some things that you'll never be able to guess or see coming.

I also want to point out the acting in the film because it's phenomenal! Especially Kaluuya, who seriously delivers an award-worthy performance. I was blown away by this guy. He played the role perfectly. I don't know how he pulled off some of those scenes, some of which are in the trailer.

Peele's Get Out is a spectacular horror-comedy masterpiece that you have to see! I'm a huge fan of the horror genre, I especially enjoy horror with comedy, and this film just perfectly nails it. I think audiences who are fans of the genre are going to enjoy this thrill ride of madness.
