LA LA LAND Featurette Focuses on Costumes, Locations, and the Movie's Opening Scene

Lionsgate has released a new featurette for La La Land, the studio's Oscar frontrunner for Best Picture that became the single most awarded film in Golden Globes history this past weekend. If you haven't seen the movie yet, I'd highly recommend it — it's one of my favorites of 2016.

The featurette concentrates on the movie's eye-popping costumes and real life locations, including some behind the scenes footage of when the production shut down a section of a Los Angeles freeway to film its opening musical number. La La Land is one of the most visually distinct movies that came out last year, combining primary colors and art deco production design with a more modern sensibility, and it's cool to hear about the thought processes that went into bringing this magical musical to life. The film is in theaters now, so check it out if you haven't seen it yet!

David Goyer and Justin Rhodes Brought on to Write the Script for GREEN LANTERN CORPS

David Goyer and Justin Rhodes have been brought on to write the script for Green Lantern Corps! According to Deadline, the new film is being described as Lethal Weapon in space and will center around Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart.

To be honest I'm kind of disappointed there was no mention of Guy Gardner in the press release! To leave him out of this film would be a huge snub for fans, so I have to imagine he's in it, wouldn't you?

I guess now that the project is official let's start the dream casting for John Stewart and (presumably) Hal Jordan! I'm also curious as to who you guys think should play Guy Gardner.

Harley Quinn Will Make Her Debut in GOTHAM Later This Season

In the mid-season premiere of Gotham last night we saw the return of a very creepy looking Jerome, who will most likely end up being The Joker. It looks like later this season he will be joined by the show's own version of Harley Quinn!

The Harley Quinn news comes from executive producer John Stephens who told TV Guide, “We might see [her] in Episode 22,” and then teased that the character will be the “launching point” for the main plot of the fourth season of Gotham.

I'm excited and curious to see how Gotham's version of this character will turn out. There's no information on what that might look like, so we'll just have to wait and see.

I also included a promo spot for next week's episode, titled “Smile Like You Mean It,” along with a plot description:

“On the run from Gordon and Bullock, Dwight (guest star David Dastmalchian) tries to ?revive Jerome (guest star Cameron Monaghan) and, in turn, activates his acolytes around Gotham City. Meanwhile, Selina’s mom’s (guest star Ivana Milicevic) intentions in Gotham are revealed, and the power play between Penguin and Nygma escalates as Barbara’s plans are set in place.”

“Smile Like You Mean It" will air on Monday, January 23.

CIVIL WAR Black Panther Sideshow Collectibles Action Figure Review

Sideshow Collectibles has an incredible 1/6 scale movie-accurate action figure of Black Panther from Captain America: Civil War that is a must own for any Marvel collector. They recently sent me one of the Hot Toys produced figures to review, and I've gotta say, it's pretty damn epic.

I did a live unboxing review of the figure on Facebook over the weekend, which you can watch below. It's a ton of fun doing these unboxing reviews and giving a first impression review.

The thing that struck me the most was perfectly capturing the costume design of Black Panther. The material they used was so textured and detailed. Last year we learned that Black Panther's suit was 100% CGI in every frame of the film, which kinda blew my mind. Well, the team behind the design of this figure awesomely matched that suit. The figure also had all of the little intricate patterns and designs that helped make the suit pop on the big screen. Then there's the meticulously crafted Black Panther mask that features the silver trims and everything. You'll be able to see all that detail in the photos I took of the figure below.

The figure features a body with over 30 points of articulation and comes with six pieces of interchangeable hands, some of which include his claws ready to strike! If any of you want to get your hands on one of these bad boys, put yourself on the waitlist for it here

Finn Jones on Iron Fist's Journey with THE DEFENDERS and His Relationship with Luke Cage

The latest interview to come out of Entertainment Weekly's The Defenders cover story is from actor Finn Jones who plays Danny Rand, a.k.a. Iron Fist. He is the last character on The Defenders team to get his own series, and when talking about the character's transition from that to The Defenders Jones says:

“Iron Fist is like Danny in his adolescence, and The Defenders is like Danny taking responsibility and moving forward with his purpose. He’s craving desperately for family, for help, for guidance, for people to learn from, and for a team [in The Defenders]. But because of what happens in Iron Fist, he’s very untrusting. It’s really his way or no way.”

Jones goes on to explains that The Defenders will continue Iron Fist's story arc and journey from season one saying:

“I see it as kind of this journey where Iron Fist and The Defenders is like the complete first season of Danny’s journey. It’s really nice to play it back-to-back because Danny does go through this awesome huge arc, so the end of Iron Fist is like the halfway point… In The Defenders, he’s got a grasp of who he is and he’s trying to do something with it. It’s great to play that consistently over the year and not have that broken up.”

The actor also goes on to discuss Iron Fist's relationship with Luke Cage. As you know, these two have a great comic book history together, and we're finally going to get to see that friendship explored in The Defenders

“I love Mike, he’s so sweet. We’re working together really well, which is f—ing cool. So far all of our stuff has been like, 'Whoa!' … It’s a really big thing among the fan base, and that aspect is coming through really well.”

When comparing the Marvel Netflix version of the characters to the comic book versions, Finn says:

“The great thing about the comic books is they’re fantastic but they’re — and I don’t want to say two-dimensional — they’re comic books, and what we’re doing is we’re making more fleshed-out characters who have real problems with the world. There’s more to Danny and Luke’s characters and what they can bring to each other than the comic books ever came upon.”

As for what that relationship looks like, Mike Colter previously teased what we can expect saying:

“He’s a young guy. There’s an exuberance that Iron Fist comes with that Luke Cage wants to temper a bit. It can’t help but have a wisdom-versus-youth quality… Danny comes out like a bull in a china shop in some ways, and I think Luke has seen the world and knows certain things. It’s a cool combination that’ll work out.”

There's a lot of exciting stuff that we can look forward to seeing in The Defenders, and watching these two character's friendship flourish is going to be pretty exciting. The Defenders is set to premiere on Netflix in July 2017.

Margot Robbie's Look Has Drastically Changed for Her Role as Tonya Harding, Check Out Some Set Photos

Last year it was announced that Suicide Squad star Margot Robbie would be taking on the role of Olympic skater Tonya Harding in the upcoming film I, Tonya. Thanks to some recently released set photos, we have our first look at the actress as Harding, and as you can see, her look has drastically changed! That doesn't even look like Robbie! It's crazy how much she looks like Harding. Check out the photos embedded below, and if you want some additional information on Harding and the film, I included that below as well.

Harding rose to the top of figure skating glory from a poor and rough childhood. She was the first woman to complete the triple axel in major competitions, and it led her to winning the 1991 U.S. Figure Skating Championships and coming in second in the World Championships.

In 1994, she was set to compete in the Olympic Games in Lillehammer against Nancy Kerrigan. That's when her life took a weird turn. Harding's husband and a couple of other thugs were hired to attack Kerrigan and break her leg. Luckily for her, they sucked at their job and only bruised her leg, then they got caught, and Harding's husband turned against her to try and stay out of jail.

That year, Kerrigan won the Silver Medal and Harding finished eighth as her life was taking a dive into the abyss. As information on the scandal unfolded, Harding was stripped of her 1994 championship, and the USFSA banned her from figure skating for life.

The script was written by Steven Rogers, who apparently did "extensive interviews with both Harding and Gillooly, capturing the absurdity of what happened but also the tragic part of the Harding saga, and trying to come from nothing to prominence in a sport where most of the competitors are the children of wealthy families that can afford all the ice time and trainers needed to get to that high a level."

The film also has a great director by the name of Craig Gillespie, who previously brought us films such as Lars and the Real Girl, the Fright Night remake, Million Dollar Arm, and The Finest Hours.

STRANGER THINGS Kids Get Their Own Awesome STAR WARS Mashup Poster

Here's an incredibly fun piece of Stranger Things and Star Wars mashup fan art created by artist Michael Maher Jr. It features the Stranger Things kids imagined in the roles of classic Star Wars characters. It features Will as Luke Skywalker, Lucas as Lando, Mike as Han Solo, Dustin as Chewbacca,  and Eleven as Princess Leia.

I'm sure that the artist was inspired to do this after Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven) said she wanted to play a young Princess Leia in a future Star Wars film, which is something I don't think many people would object to. As you can see, she would easily fit the role.

Hilarious First Trailer for Drew Barrymore's Zombie Sitcom SANTA CLARITA DIET with Nathan Fillion

"From now on, we fuck everything up together."

The first trailer has been released for Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant's upcoming Netflix zombie comedy series Santa Clarita Diet, and it's hilarious! This looks like it's going to be an incredibly fun and entertaining series, and it was a very pleasant surprise to see that Nathan Fillion makes an appearance! I'm not sure how big of a role he'll have in the series, but it's still awesome to see him in this trailer. Hopefully, he's a series regular.

In the series, Barrymore and Olyphant play Sheila and Joel, a married couple, who are real estate agents in Santa Clarita, California. Things take a dark turn for them when Sheila goes through a “dramatic change” and becomes a flesh-eating zombie. It's explained that "while they tend to their open houses and teenage daughter, the couple must sate Sheila’s unbridled id and undead hunger, first with raw meat and, eventually, the human kind."

I absolutely love what I'm seeing from the series in this first trailer, and I'm super excited about watching it! The 13 episodes are set to premiere on Netflix on February 3, 2017, and it looks like it could be a big hit!

Funko POP! Gives us Our First Look at Ego The Living Planet in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2

Thanks to the Funko POP! and Dorbz toy lines, we have our first look at Ego the Living Planet from James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy. This is Star-Lord's dad, who will be played by Kurt Russell in the sequel. When talking about the character, Gunn has said:

“Yeah, [Star-Lord’s] dad is a planet… Sort of. It will all be explained in the film. But to me, this is the absolute center of Vol. 2, and one of the reasons I’ve been so excited about it.”

The first footage of Ego was revealed last summer at Comic-Con, which you can read about here. No footage has been released officially to the public yet, though, so these toys are really most people's first look at the character.

HBO President Says Potential GAME OF THRONES Spin-Off Would Be a Prequel

$

0

If Game of Thrones is getting a spin-off, it's going to be a prequel. That's what HBO head of programming Casey Bloys is telling EW, anyway, and the move seems smart. Here's what Bloys said specifically on the matter...

“A prequel feels like it has less pressure on it [than a spin-off]. [Author George R.R. Martin’s history of Westeros] gives you areas in which to say to a writer, ‘If you were going to do this, then go flesh it out,’ and we’ll see what comes back. But I don’t feel any pressure that we have to have something.”

It's definitely a safer and smarter option to stick to the source material as opposed to attempting to create something entirely new. That said, we only really have the barebones telling of "Robert's Rebellion," and while the books add a little more detail, there's still a lot more that can be fleshed out!

I'm most for this option because it lets us see Sean Bean back at the helm of the series, and the peak of the "King in the North" reign. I always thought it sucked that we see Winterfell collapse when they're built up to be so cool from the very start.

Another thing that would be awesome to see is the Targaryen family and their three dragons with which they ruled the land. The more I think about it, I might actually want to see this series more than the ending of Game of Thrones! Let's hope HBO makes it happen!

New X-MEN TV Series (Not LEGION) Will Have Sentinels

$
0
0

In case you weren't aware, Legion is not the only X-Men television show Fox is developing at the moment. There's actually another series coming that apparently could get the green light in a couple weeks according to Comicbook. What it is about, who is in it, or where in the confusing timeline it takes place is unknown...but we do know there are Sentinels in it. Producer Lauren Donner shares some additional interviews below...

“Matt's is much more a part of just the world in terms of there are mutants, mutants are hated and there are Sentinels -- though very different from what we've seen before...You feel like you're here in the X-Men world. With Legion, we're our own universe. It gives Noah the freedom to do what he wants to do. Because we play with so many different timelines, and we rebooted and not really rebooted and all that, we felt like, OK, we're going to throw it out there and hope the fans accept it.”

So basically she's saying Fox is going with the "f*** you, accept it" strategy when it comes to continuity and X-Men! While I'm not going to turn my nose up at yet another hero show on television, I have to wonder at what point does the X-Men franchise become just as convoluted as the comics? Isn't this exactly why comic sales declined?

I guess if anyone had the freedom for multiple franchises for characters in their roster it's definitely the X-Men, but is it too much? I for one am completely fine with Legion being the only X-Men show on television for the time being.

I think Disney's animated feature Robin Hood is one of the studio's best and most consistently underrated movies. It ticks a ton of the boxes of aspects I appreciate in an animated film: memorable characters, great action, comedy, romance, and terrific music. YouTuber Pogo has paid tribute to the 1973 movie with a beautiful, ethereal dance remix that mashes up a bunch of moments from the film into a catchy video.

Slashfilm is pretty convinced this film is a blatant E.T. ripoff, I think it's a mixture. In fact, I'm so sure My Pet Dinosaur is a mixture of Stranger Things meets E.T. I'm willing to bet that comparison was made in the pitch for the film! You have your kid going up against the military and protecting some alien creature so the E.T. reference is already there, but then you have to take the ensemble kid cast into consideration! Also, a bunch of kids raiding a military facility in an attempt to rescue??? It's all right there!

There's a Hidden Imperial March Easter Egg in the ROGUE ONE Score

The sheer dedication of fans never ceases to amaze me, but Star Wars fandom? Man, they're on some next level shit.

io9 points us to this tweet from user @bobbyrobertspdx that points out the shocking Easter Egg you discover when you speed up the song "Hope" from Michael Giacchino's score to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. It sounds almost exactly like the Imperial March. This is one of those things that I never would have figured out on my own, but it's a subtle enough callback that it provides a subconscious link when you're watching Rogue One. It's a cool homage to John Williams without straight up stealing his iconic theme. Nicely done.

Literally, the best and worst news I could receive at the same time. I guess I could've assumed the daughter of Thanos would be involved in a film where he is the main villain, but now that I know she's there I WANT MORE DETAILS! Do you guys think they'll make her go bald again?! I hope not! Her hair is beautiful! Is that weird that I'm worried about that?

Video Essay: HEAT's Iconic Diner Scene, From Script to Screen

Even if you've seen Michael Mann's action thriller Heat a hundred times, there's still something magical about its iconic diner scene in which Robert De Niro and Al Pacino act opposite each other for the first time in film history. And now, thanks to a video essay by Vashi Nedomansky, we can watch that scene side-by-side with an annotated script. It's fascinating to see what subtle changes the actors decided to make to their dialogue from the page, and it's a nice microcosm of the way movies end up being the result of thousands of decisions between collaborators. This makes me want to go back and rewatch the whole movie.

A Demonic Clown Terrorizes in Unintentionally Comedic Trailer for CLOWNTERGEIST

a-demonic-clown-terrorizes-in-unintentionally-comedic-trailer-for-clowntergeist

"It's a paranormal shitstorm, but physically he's still human."

Yes, Clowntergeist is a real title for a real horror movie. The first trailer for it has been released, and the fact that it takes itself so seriously makes it incredibly funny. Director Aaron Mirte set out to make a frightening horror movie, but it seems like the kind of movie that will unintentionally be a comedy. Maybe some people will find it scary, but I was laughing throughout the trailer.

The film tells the story of Emma (Brittany Bellard), who is a college student with a phobia of clowns. She is forced to confront that fear when a demonic clown terrorizes her town. The clown leaves his victims balloons with the date and time of their deaths. This looks like it's gonna be a entertaining flick!

Emma, a college student with a crippling fear of clowns, must come face to face with her worst fear when an evil spirit in the body of a clown is summoned terrorizing the town she calls home. One by one Emma and her friends receive a balloon with the exact time and date of when it will appear to kill them written on it. After receiving her balloon, Emma realizes that she has two days left to live, and must fight against the clock to find a way to survive.

There's no release date yet, but you can watch the trailer below and check out the poster above.

The Characters, Models, and Voice Actors of ARCHER

$

I always thought the characters of FX's spy comedy Archer were loosely based on the actors who provided their voices. Chris Parnell looks a lot like Cyril, Aisha Tyler has a bit of a Lana vibe, and Jessica Walter definitely looks like Malory. But apparently there are entirely different people who provide the inspiration for the look of the show's characters, and this handy chart from Reddit (via GeekXGirls) provides a nice comparison. Can you believe that the guy who does the voice of Krieger doubles as the model for Ray? Insanity!

Programming note: Archer moves from FX to its sister network FXX this season, and season 8 premieres at 10pm on April 5th.
