Chris Pine talks STAR TREK INTO THE DARKNESS

$

Chris Pine is always asked about Star Trek in any interview he gives. The actor has been doing a ton of press for his new animated film Rise of the Guardians and these are some Star Trek related excerpts from those interviews. I loved J.J. Abrams take on the Trek universe, and am very excited to see what happens with Star Trek into the Darkness

The following videos give us some great insight into the Star Trek sequel:

KTLA

The story is huge in terms of scope and scale and story it is a lot bigger than the first. It is going to be IMAX. Bendedict Cumberbatch as the evil bad guy. I think there is a lot of fun stuff.

Red Carpet News

Kirk is fun because he is a brash, cocky, bull-headed kind of guy. I think the journey he goes on in this new film is a lot about – the first one was about getting the chair and the second one is about earning it. And I think that is a big part of his journey.

HeyYouGuys.co.uk

Benedict [Cumberbatch] is such an incredible talent. He did some work in the new Trek that will blow people away.

9 News TX

JJ will be constantly tinkering with [Star Trek] until the last minute.

Here is what Pine had to say during an interview with Radio Times:

“There’s one scene in [Star Trek Into Darkness] that’s like, you know… in all kinds of heavy science fiction there’s got to be the exposition scene where it’s like, what the hell’s going on? It’s a really, really, really hard scene. Not for me, for Benedict – and watching him handle that and to make something that I think, on paper, could have been a death trap for an actor and to see how he [deals with it]…"

Star Trek Into the Darkness hits theaters in May 2013!

Here's an awesome collection of travel posters created by Fernando Reza which are inspired by the homes of several famous mythological creatures. I'm surprised that the aliens of Area 51 aren't included in the set. I really hope these mythical beasts are real, because that would make the world we live in so much more interesting. Out of this set of posters where are you most interested in going? Have you ever even seen one of these creatures?

A limited edition (100 each) of signed and numbered prints are available to purchase from Fernando Reza’s online store.

Walt Disney Animation's The Story of Menstruation

$

0

This is an old Walt Disney animated production called The Story of Menstruation. The 10-minute video was made in 1946 and was shown to 105 million American students in health education classes. Apparently, this is the first film to ever use the word vagina. It's interesting watching these old instructional videos from different periods of time. It gives you a look into how society looked at things at that time. It's almost like taking a trip back in time.

Here's a little more information,

It was part of a 1945 to 1951 series of films that Disney produced for American schools. Gynecologist Mason Hohn was hired as a consultant to ensure that the film was scientifically accurate. Hohn was hired to increase the likelihood that school doctors and nurses would allow the film to be shown. Hohn's involvement led to a stronger emphasis on biology than other marketing by ICCC. The Story of Menstruation increased its reputation when it received the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval.

It was one of the first commercially sponsored films to be distributed to high schools. It was distributed with a booklet for teachers and students called Very Personally Yours that featured advertising of the Kotex brand of products, and discouraged the use of tampons, where the market was dominated by the Tampax brand of rivals Procter & Gamble.

Neither sexuality nor reproduction is mentioned in the film, and an emphasis on sanitation makes it, as Disney historian Jim Korkis has suggested: "a hygienic crisis rather than a maturation event." The menstrual flow was depicted as snow white instead of blood red.

I won't lie... this is kind of depressing, but in a funny way.

Help Aurora Rise with these Exclusive Cosplay Prints from Riddle

If you're a fan of great cosplay or just want to help some people in need, I've got something right up your alley. One of my favorite cosplayer's, Riddle, is offering some exclusive prints for sale as part of the Aurora Rises campaign. Part of all the proceeds go to helping the victims of the terrible event that occurred in Aurora, Colorado. So if you have some extra cash lying around, here is a wonderful way to spend it.

As for the prints themselves they are high gloss 8x10 shots of Huntress, Wasp (modern) and Black Cat, and all of them are quite stunning. I have to say Riddle's Huntress is my favorite, but that's mostly because of my complete fandom of the character. The Wasp shot with Iron Man in the background is a very close second, and Black Cat is gorgeous as well. You can get them for $10 a pop (plus S&H), but make sure to act soon. Each one is only available until November 28th.

Cool pics and a chance to help others. Sounds good to me.

STAR WARS - Yoda Eared Hoodie

Yoda inspected. Jedi approved.

Here's a more lowkey Star Wars hoodie for those of you who are a little too scared to rock Chewbacca's Wookie fur or don't have pants that go with Boba Fett's multi-colored armor. Until you pull the Yoda-eared hood over your head, most people probably wouldn't notice that you have the words "Jedi Master" across your chest. From afar this might just be mistaken for a school sweater. Don't worry, we won't judge. This fleece hoodie looks warm and gives you just the right amount of geek to claim Star Wars pride while letting you remain a more incognito Jedi. After all, you want it to be a SURPRISE when you cut off someone's arm.

They're available at Amazon for $29.99. (via: FashionablyGeek)

First Look at James Wan's Horror Film THE CONJURING

$

Those who attended NYCC this year were treated to some fantastically creepy footage from James Wan's new horror thriller The Conjuring. This film looks awesome! If you liked Insidious, you're going to love the The Conjuring. Two photos have been released for the movie, but I can't wait for the trailer to be released so you can all see it for yourselves! I think you'll be surprised how good and creepy this movie looks. You can read our description of the trailer and clips right here if you want.

The movie stars Patrick Wilson, Ron LivingstonLili Tayor, and Vera Farmiga. It's set in the 1970s and based on the true story of a family with five kids that is haunted by several spirits, and one of them is supposedly an evil witch who is hell bent on torturing the poor family. The family doesn't know what to do so they call in a couple of paranormal investigators to check things out and explain the unusual activity in the house and help make it stop.

The supernatural events took place in the Rhode Island home of the Perron family. Wilson and Farmiga play a husband and wife team of demonologists and psychic investigators, Lorraine and Ed Warren, and this ends up being the most horrifying case of their career. Livingston and Taylor play the couple living in the house. The movie is actually based on the book that tells the events of what happen, House of Darkness, House of Light: The True Story by Andrea Perron.

The movie will be released in theaters on July 19th, 2013.

McG Set to Develop SCHOOL OF FEAR

Terminator Salvation director McG is attached to produce and potentially direct a feature film adaptation of the book series School of Fear written by Gitty Daneshvari. The first book published back in 2009, the script will be written by Daniel Mackey, and the story follows four children who suffer from phobias. They are sent to and exclusive and secretive school where they conquer their fears and survive a perilous final test. Here's the description of the first book:

With very few options left, the parents of these four twelve year-olds send them to the highly elusive and exclusive School of Fear to help them overcome their phobias. But when their peculiar teacher, Mrs. Wellington, and her unconventional teaching methods turn out to be more frightening than even their fears, the foursome realize that this just may be the scariest summer of their lives.

It sounds like an interesting story that could make for a good entertaining movie. The producers hope that this ends up being a big successful franchise. McG recently signed on to direct Magic Castle for 20th Century Fox.

Hostess 1970's Comic Strip Tribute - Superheroes Selling Twinkies!

I'm sure you all know by now that Hostess is no more. They have closed up shop and are declaring bankruptcy. I honestly never thought I would live to see this day. Like many of you I grew up on Hostess baked goods! My favorites were the Ding Dongs and the Ho-Ho's. As of today I can't seem to find them. The sections of the stores were the Hostess goods were located are empty. It's really kind of sad, and I can't help but think that Hostess is like "Oh I see, now that we've shut down you all finally come out and buy our product." I guess it's just one of those things we took for granted. But dammit, this is America, and Hostess is an American product! It wasn't supposed to go out of business! Hostess was suppose to live on, what kind of childhood will kids have without Hostess awesomeness!? At least I can proudly say that I've always made sure there was Hostess goodness in our cupboards.

Some of you may or may not know that Hostess has teamed up with comic book properties from both Marvel and DC over the years to promote their products. That's right friends, superheroes were selling Twinkies, Cup Cakes, Pies and more! As a little tribute to Hostess, I thought I would post a collection of fun 70's Hostess and superhero comic strip ads featuring Captain America, Batman, Thor, Spider-Man, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Hulk, and more in some kind of crazy Hostess adventure.

Enjoy the comic strips and let us know what your favorite Hostess treat was!

BRAVE Blu-ray Review

Disney Animation has released Brave on Blu-ray Collector's Edition. Directed by Mark Andrews, Brenda Chapman, and Steve Purcell (II) the film features a great voice cast and tons of special features. The voice cast is comprised of Kelly MacDonald, Julie Walters, Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson, Kevin McKidd, and Craig Ferguson. Disney has one again done a fantastic job with this home video release, packing it with some wonderful bonus material.

Brave is a fantastic film for the entire family. It shows one of the best mother daughter relationships and features some of two strong female characters. I love the way Disney/Pixar movies all have a message, but never beat you over the head with their message.

Brenda Chapman wrote the story that follows the fiery Merida who despite being a daughter of royalty, prefers to spend her time riding her horse and shooting her bow and arrow. Here mother wants her to dress and act like a proper lady, and this causes a clash of wills between mother and daughter. Merida decides to make a reckless choice, which unleashes unintended peril on her father’s kingdom and her mother’s life. Merida struggles with the unpredictable forces of nature, magic and a dark, ancient curse to set things right.

Disney Animation has had a number of flops lately, but Brave turns around the losing streak. This is a wonderfully animated film that is perfect for the entire family. The voice acting is fantastic.I am glad that they did not try to put a big name star into the role and have them attempt to do a Scottish accent. MacDonald, Connolly and Thompson are perfectly cast, and add authenticity.

The animation is equally wonderful, I felt as though I was taking a trip to the Scottish highlands. The colors and sound are so vibrant, and literally pop off the screen. I always think of how much time goes into animating a movie, and I am in even more awe at the amount of details that appear on screen. Watching the film in theaters was great, but seeing it on my home theater was fantastic.

The special features are extensive on most Disney Home Entertainment releases, and this is no different.

  • Audio Commentary: This commentary track includes director Mark Andrews, co-director Steve Purcell, story supervisor Brian Larsen and editor Nick Smith. They talk about everything from the voice cast, to the various challenges of animation.
  •
  • Short Films: La Luna is at the top of my list for short films this year. I loved Paper Man, before Wreck-it-Ralph, but this story is heartwarming. It's about a boy, his father and his grandfather who have a very important job with the moon and stars. The second short, The Legend of Mor'Du, and reveals the origin of Mor'Du the Demon Bear.
  •
  • Behind the Scenes: There are eight featurettes that go behind-the-scenes and delves into the research process to help add Scottish flare, the lead female characters, designers and animators. I loved the feature called "Bears" that shows what went into creating the life-like bears. Each of these featurettes is fun to watch, and very informative.
  •
  • Extended Scenes: There is 13 minutes of extra footage in the four extended scenes. Each scene has a handy pop-up icon that identifies the bits and pieces that were left on the cutting room floor.
  •
  • Promotional Pieces: These are basically a mix of deleted scenes and international promotional trailers. Nothing too special here.
  •
  • Fergus & Mor'Du: An Alternate Opening: This section features a deleted into that shows how Fergus lost his leg.
  •
  • Fallen Warriors: This section includes a collection of shots that were going to be included in the film, but were removed during the final edit of the film.
  •
  • Dirty Hairy People: Take a trip to medieval Scotland with this feature that focuses on the dirty hair, grime, mud, bad teeth, tattered clothing and other subtle touches.
  •
  • It is English... Sort Of: This funny feature gives a lesson in Scottish slang.
  •
  • Angus: This shows the animation that went into crafting Angus, Merida's horse.
  •
  • The Tapestry: Take a look at the intricacy and details that went into crafting Merida's family tapestry.
  •
  • Art Galleries: Features five different art galleries

New Poster for Judd Apatow's THIS IS 40

Here's a new poster for Judd Apatow's new comedy This is 40, which is kind of a sequel to Knocked Up. The movie follows the lives of the two characters Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann), and it takes place few years after the events of Knocked Up and basically shows us what married life is at 40, giving me something to look forward too. The movie also stars  Jason Segel, and Melissa McCarthy with Albert Brooks playing Rudd's dad, which should be great.

I like Apatow's films as it has comedy, heart, and includes characters most of us can relate to. This is 40 will be released in theaters on December 21st. Click here to check out the trailer.

DEUS EX: HUMAN REVOLUTION Writer on Adapting the Game for Film

$

A couple of days ago it was announced that Sinister director Scott Derrickson would be directing the big screen adaptation of Square Enix's video game Deus Ex: Human Revolution. He is also set to co-write the script with C. Robert Cargill. In a recent interview with Movies.com Cargill talked about adapting the game into a film, and why he and Derrickson are taking it on.

First and foremost, the moral complexity of the story. It’s a dark, dark story underneath it all. Almost everyone in the game exists in a moral gray area with a well-defended position that you can really wrap your head around. The writing of Deus Ex is the stuff of good novels. As Scott and I dissected it, we found a lot of interesting angles to issues everyone is wrestling with in this day and age. We thought of elements to the universe that we wanted to further explore. And we got excited about it. On top of all that, Scott and I love cyberpunk. I grew up on it. The way Deux Ex reinvented the genre was fantastic. It got us talking about movies like District 9 and Looper and Blade Runner and Inception, and it just seemed like the right fit.

He goes on to talk about what the obstacles they face in adapting the game.

Straight up, the fact that it’s a video game. That comes with its own host of problems. Every fan of the game has a very specific idea in what they want to see in a movie – casting, visuals, favorite parts of the game. At the same time, we’re also making a film for people who haven’t played the game; some who haven’t even heard of it and just think the movie looks cool. The way we’ve approached it is that we’ve decided not to make a video game movie. We’re making a cyberpunk movie.

The game is incredibly convoluted. Not in a bad way, mind you. In a way that really works as a twisty, turny 30-plus-hour gaming experience. A straight adaptation of the core story is, as you say, problematic. If you’ve got two hours, sit down and watch all the cut scenes strung together on YouTube. Then realize that you’ve watched a movie’s worth of story without any connective tissue, leaving out every single side quest/subplot as well as a number of important conversations. The trick will be to tell the story right and do it justice while simplifying certain elements, without cheapening it or dumbing it down. Needless to say, we have some ideas.

I wonder how long they've been developing the movie before it was officially announced. It sounds like they have a solid idea on what they want to do with it. Cargil is then asked if he played the game, and it seems like he's on top of things in that area as well. Here's what he had to say...

Several times. I’m in the middle of my third play-through now. I’m trying to beat it without killing anyone but the bosses, which is not easy. There’s something particularly cool about playing video games for “research” and getting to tell your wife you’re “working” while you’ve got an XBox controller in your hand.

The story is set in the near future, when dramatic advances in human augmentation have triggered a technological renaissance. The protagonist, an ex-SWAT security specialist named Adam Jensen, must embrace mechanical augments in order to unravel a global conspiracy.

There's a talented team attached to this film project, and I think it going to turn out being a very cool movie. It seems like these guys wont do anything less.

Ridley Scott's Abandoned I AM LEGEND Creature Designs

$

I don't know about you but I hated I Am Legend. Will Smith is Awesome don't get me wrong... but the entire point of the book was missed, along with some other off the wall concepts... Vermont anyone?

So I was surprised to find out Ridley Scott was once attached to direct an earlier film version of the story back in 1997, with Arnold Schwarzenegger as Robert Neville. Blastr found a cool creature effects video from the scrapped project. Mr. Scott hired Tom Woodruff Jr. and Alec Gillis to bring the creatures for I Am Legend to life.

What these creatures are depending on who you are talking to, but Richard Matheson, the man behind the book, thought of them as vampiric in nature.

Woodruff Jr. and Gillis spent four months working up miniature maquettes, full-scale busts, and experimenting with silicone appliances... in other words working their asses off... all in the pursuit of making some bad ass creatures. What they came up with is pretty terrific.

Scott's project failed because of... you guessed it... budget issues. Also the script had little to no dialogue in the first hour and the studio wanted more action. Check out the video below
Thanks to studios we get films like Battleship, Man on a Ledge, and Taken 2.

Who would have thought Liam Neeson would be one of the big action stars in Hollywood? He's getting a ton of work these days playing a badass.  He's currently in negotiations with Vertigo Entertainment and Warner Bros. to star in a new crime thriller called The All Nighter (aka Run All Night).

According to The Wrap, the story centers on "an aging hit man who, in order to protect his wife and son, must take on his former boss in a single night. He then winds up on the run from the mob and the authorities with his estranged son." The script for the film was written by Brad Ingelsby.

Neeson is a great actor, and he can sure kick some ass on the big screen. He's got a few other films in the pipeline that includes Non-StopA Walk Among The Tombstones and he'll also be lending his voice to the upcoming LEGO: The Piece of Resistance. What is you favorite Liam Neeson role?
