Trailer for the Comedy ADMISSION with Tina Fey and Paul Rudd

0
0

Focus Features has released a fun trailer for their upcoming comedy, Admission, which stars Tina Fey and Paul Rudd. The story follows a college counselor (Fey) whose life is turned upside down when she finds out she crosses paths with the son she gave up for adoption years earlier. Rudd plays an old classmate of hers who happens to be her son's teacher. I think Fey and Rudd are both hilarious, and this movie looks like a good one.

Here's the Synopsis:

Fey is plays Portia Nathan, an admissions officer at Princeton University. Evaluating thousands of hopeful college students, the exceedingly bright and driven woman lives her life by the book, both at work and in her relationship with a faculty colleague, Mark (Sheen). Visiting an experimental New Hampshire high school submitting applicants, Portia is caught off guard when its co-founder John Halsey (Rudd) turns out to have attended college with her. She is then floored when reminded of the life-altering decision that she made while still a student herself; she had a son, who she gave up for adoption, and who she now realizes may be one of John's students, the precocious misfit Jeremiah. As Portia's emotions surge forth, she finds her life turning upside down in embarrassing ways and begins to bend the admissions rules – in the hopes of getting Jeremiah on the best path while perhaps righting her own as well.

The movie also stars Michael Sheen, Gloria Reuben, Wallace Shawn, and Lily Tomlin. It will be released in theaters on March 8th, 2013. Check out the trailer!

Trailer for THE HEAT with Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy

Melissa MccCarthy and Sandra Bullock team up in a new comedy from Bridesmaids director Paul Feig called The Heat. It's bascially a buddy cop comedy in which McCarthy plays a crazy Boston P.D. detective who teams up with an straitlaced FBI agent played by Bullock. Together they will take down a drug kingpin. There's some fun moments in the trailer, so it looks like this new buddy cop movie has some promise.

Here's the Synopsis:

Uptight and straight-laced, FBI Special Agent Sarah Ashburn (Sandra Bullock) is a methodical investigator with a reputation for excellence–and hyper-arrogance. Shannon Mullins (Melissa McCarthy), one of Boston P.D.’s “finest,” is foul-mouthed and has a very short fuse, and uses her gut instinct and street smarts to catch the most elusive criminals. Neither has ever had a partner, or a friend for that matter. When these two wildly incompatible law officers join forces to bring down a ruthless drug lord, they become the last thing anyone expected: buddies. From Paul Feig, the director of “Bridesmaids.”

Buddy cop films are just a part of the business, Hollywood will never stop making them. The film also stars Demián BichirMarlon Wayans, and Michael Rapaport. The Heat comes out on April 5th 2013.

Jaime Foxx Talks Playing Electro in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2

0
0

Earlier this month, news broke that Jamie Foxx was up for the role of Electro in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. This was surprising at first, but the more I've thought about it, the more I like the idea. I hope it happens. Foxx wants it to happen as well. Access Hollywood caught up with the actor and learned that even though he wants to do it, things aren't locked into place yet.

Fingers crossed it all works out, ...I have a little daughter, four years old, and what’s crazy is like, this past year she had a birthday where Spider-Man was the theme... I haven’t sprung it on her yet, but she will go crazy!

Not sure why things aren't locked into place yet, but I imagine it's money. Foxx isn't a cheap actor to get. In fact, if he's cast, he'll probably end up making more money than the other lead actors and the director combined.

This will be the first time Electro will be seen on the big screen. Max Dillon became Electro after being struck by a bolt of lightening. Instead of being killed, he gained the ability to control electricity. The character was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, and first appeared in "The Amazing Spider-Man #9" in February 1964.

Harry Osborn still hasn't been cast, though there are a few actors that have been revealed to be up for the role. Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone are set to reprise their roles, and Shailene Woodley has joined the cast as Mary Jane Watson. Marc Webb will direct the film from a script from Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Jeff Pinkner, and James Vanderbilt. The movie will be released on May 2nd, 2014!

New School video games collide with Old School video games in this extremely cool action-packed short film from Freddie Wong, called New School Vs. Old School. The short features several of Old School video games invading the modern world we live in, and Master Chief  calls several of the newer video game characters into action to fight them off and save the day.

What happens when old school games go face to face with new school characters?

ZELDA: My Money's on Green in This Awesome Link of War Art

While some would say Zelda is epic in its own right, there aren't too many games that truly define the word like the God of War Series. David Hsuyen has done an amazing job at bringing the two worlds together in his Link of War pic, and while I'm not the biggest Zelda fan, I must give props where they are due.

The colors are extremely vibrant, with Link's green just popping off the page. Because of the sheer scale of the boss you can see how different (and cool) the line-work is. Random slashes and crosshatches fill the arms and legs and have an almost chalk-like tone to them. Very eye catching and really different.

If you're digging what you see, head over to his Deviant Art page and let him know!

Fantasy Film BEAUTIFUL CREATURES Has a New Trailer

0
0

I'm sure Warner Bros. is hoping this Beautiful Creatures movie turns out to be as big a hit as Twilight was. If it's any indication that I have no interest in the movie, like I have no interest in Twilight, maybe it will be a big hit. A new trailer has been released, it's longer than the first one and gives us a look at some new footage.

The movie is based on the first of a five-novel series written by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. It's a coming-of-age supernatural story set in the South about two star-crossed teens. A local boy named Ethan, and a mysterious new girl named Lena. Together they uncover some dark secrets about their families, their history and the town in which they live.

Here's the Synopsis:

A supernatural love story set in the South, “Beautiful Creatures” tells the tale of two star-crossed lovers: Ethan (Alden Ehrenreich), a young man longing to escape his small town, and Lena (Alice Englert), a mysterious new girl. Together, they uncover dark secrets about their respective families, their history and their town. Oscar(R) nominee Richard LaGravenese (“The Fisher King,””P.S. I Love You”) directs from his adaptation of the first novel in the best-selling series by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. The film stars Alden Ehrenreich (“Tetro”), newcomer Alice Englert, Academy Award(R) winner Jeremy Irons (“Reversal of Fortune”) Oscar(R) nominee Viola Davis (“The Help,” “Doubt”), Emmy Rossum (TV’s “Shameless”) and Academy Award(R) winner Emma Thompson (“Howard’s End,” “Sense and Sensibility”).

The movie was written and directed by Richard LaGravenese, and stars Alden Ehrenreich, Alice Englert, Jeremy Irons, Viola Davis, Emmy Rossum, and Emma Thompson. It's set to be released on February 13th, 2013.

TV Spot #7 for THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY

Admit it, your day wouldn't be complete without another TV Spot for The Hobbit. Warner Bros. has released their seventh TV spot for the film, and yes, this one has got some new footage in it as well. The movie will be released on December 14th, and it's going to be so cool to go back to Middle Earth! I honestly thought that this movie would never get made, but thankfully everything fell into place.

Synopsis:

The adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.

Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever…Gollum.

Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s "precious" ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities … A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

New Set of Retro STAR TREK Art by Juan Ortiz

Artist Juan Ortiz has started an epic art project in which he will create a series of 80 poster designs--one for every episode of Star Trek: The Original Series. He releases four of them every month, and will do so over the course of 20 months. Here are the latest additions featuring his very cool retro style.

To look over the previous poster art, click here and here. I've included descriptions and artist comments below each piece. The description directly below is for the poster above.

Episode 1: The Man Trap. "I tried to picture what Kirk's view was while he was having the salt sucked out of him," says Ortiz of this tale of a deadly shape-shifting creature that needs salt to survive. "By filling the page up completely, I hope to give the viewer the sense of being smothered or trapped."

Episode 7: What Are Little Girls Made Of? Nurse Christine Chapel is reunited with her missing fiancé on Exo III, but the scientist's obsession leads him to make an android duplicate of Captain Kirk. Ortiz comments, "Just having Ruk (a massive android bodyguard) with that title would have been creepy enough, but having his shadow loom over Andrea (the scientist's comely assistant) creates more drama. I also thought about Frankenstein a bit while I worked on this one."

This Side of Paradise. Flower power is vividly on Omicron Ceti III, where plant spores keep colonists healthy, blissful and placid, despite radiation from deadly Berthold rays. Enterprise crew members fall under the influence of the spores, including Spock, who feels love and struggles to return to his post. Says Ortiz, "The hand symbolically represents Spock, having rejected love, reaching out from paradise for life aboard the Enterprise and his pursuit of logic."

Episode 27: The Alternative Factor. The Beatles' musical fantasy film Yellow Submarinemeets the The Who's rock musical Tommy in this print. Ortiz notes, "Lazarus' time ship reminded me of the Beatles' yellow sub, so I went with that in mind and with the sea of holes representing the doorways through time."

Episode 36: Catspaw. Here the artist wanted a stark, bold look, with the Enterprise in the cat's mouth. Says Ortiz, "I think that's the playful part, sort of a 'look what the cat dragged in' moment. Staring out the window and seeing empty eyes reflecting back at you creates that eerie feeling."

Episode 44: The Trouble With Tribbles. "The Enterprise is metaphorically bleeding Tribbles," says Ortiz. "I wanted the poster to be fun and colorful, and hopefully [to] make people smile."

Episode 70: Let That Be Your Last Battlefield. "Before I upset any fans," explains Ortiz, "I intentionally flopped the colors so that the white and the black could face each other." He adds, "I used the exact same face for both faces, which I hope demonstrates the absurdity of racism. I kept the faces as simple shapes so that the rage between the two, defined by the touches of red, would translate better."

Episode 47: The Immunity Syndrome. Here Ortiz has drawn a representation of the gigantic energy-draining amoeba that threatens an entire galaxy. He says, "The paint splatters are actually fonts or dingbats. The only laborious part was arranging and colorizing the splatters into a layout that fell into an organized mess."

ROBOCOP Sizzle Reel and Cool Concept Art

I think I'm one of the few people actually looking forward to seeing Jose Padilha's Robocop remake. A lot of people were turned off by the suit designs, but I freakin' embraced that shit. I think it looks great, and I'm excited to see it in action!

There's a very cool promotional sizzle reel that been released for the movie featuring some of the films concept art and CG designs, as well as interviews with the Padilha and Joel Kinnaman sharing their thoughts on the movie and the franchise. One of the designs shown looks more like the original suit that we've all come to know and respect. I think it's ok for change though. We don't live in the 80s anymore, and that's a good thing.

The video gives us a great look at the tone and feel this movie is going to have, and if you're still not sold on it, maybe this will help you change your mind. If it doesn't, then just wait for the trailer before you completely write off the movie. If you've seen Padilha's previous movies like the Elite Squad films, then you know he's going to do a great job bringing Robocop back to life.

Watch the video and let us know if it's sparked any kind of excitement in you!

The movie also stars Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, and Samuel L. Jackson, as well as Abbie Cornish, Jackie Earle Haley, Michael K. Williams , Jay Baruchel, Jennifer Ehle, and Marianne Jean-Baptiste.

Synopsis:

In RoboCop, the year is 2028 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front. Alex Murphy (Kinnaman) is a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilizes their remarkable science of robotics to save Alex's life. He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities, but with issues a regular man has never had to face before.

UPDATE - Video got pulled, if we find another we'll update the post.

You've got to watch this wonderfully intense and exciting animated short film called Heart, which was directed by Erick Oh. The film was supported by The Simpsons creator Matt Groening. It's described as being "an exploration of transcendence," and it comes along with the following note:

HEART presents questions through abstract metaphors and symbols, illustrated by the human heart.

There's not a dull moment in the short. It's exciting to watch, and there is a lot of emotion and soul packed into it. I really loved this film, and I hope you do too. Check it out...

Animatronics SFX Reel Is Disturbingly Cool

This SFX reel by animatronics artist Gustav Hoegen is so crazy good you might have thought his work was CGI. His credits include Prometheus, Clash of the Titans, Doctor Who, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. There are some potential spoilers so if you haven't seen the aforementioned movies beware. Thanks to IO9 & Geekologie for the video.

Seeing the inner workings of these creations really makes me jealous of Hoegen's engineering skills. I'm so glad animatronics is alive and kicking and not some lost art medium.

3 Completely Legitimate Reasons To Hate Twilight (If You Really Need Them)

0
0

This weekend "the saga" is ending and, and geeks everywhere can only hope we can now go back to enjoying our fandom, cons, and culture without having to cater to the all too prevalent Twilight fan base. Of course, we know (probably more so than they) that this is a pipe dream, and inevitably Hollywood will find a way to pull all of them back in for years to come until they become yet another embarrassing sub staple on our identity. I tried to like Twilight, I really did. It was about two years ago I sat down and got about 30 minutes into the first film before I lost my cool. That DVD was in the trash quicker than you can say, "hold on tight spider monkey."

There are plenty of reasons to hate Twilight, but I try to stray away from the more common gripes as I tend to disagree with most of them. The fans of the series (when they aren't obsessing on the film) are much more normal than say your average geek. Robert Pattinson showed his acting prowess in Cosmopolis this year, and Kristen Stewart won me over a long time ago with Adventureland. My hatred for the series lies primarily in the thought of the series itself and everything it stands for, which I believe is the perfect argument for me and any other person wishing to never fully indulge in an entire movie with a Twihard. When that day comes (and it will), have these arguments at the ready to shut down any argument your misguided friend may offer.

3. It's Not A Saga.

Sagas by their original definition are Norse prose written in the 14th century. If you are a big smart ass and don't really give a s*** about the person you're speaking to, this will show where you stand on the matter quite quickly and almost guarantee they ignore you for quite a while. For the sake of argument, let's draw on a much broader interpretation of the word which labels it as a "tale of heroic achievement rife with drama and a series of events." While the series is rife with drama and a series of events (or so the summaries say) there's little to nothing heroic about it. In fact the attitude, characterization, and idea of Bella in general sets women back 70 years. She's not strong, independent, or even free thinking when compared to the Scheherazades (1001 Nights) and Katniss Everdeens that serve as much more fitting of the role of heroics. What about Bella, who is the primary focus of this entire story, is heroic? Her willingness to birth a vampire baby? To play the field amongst mystical characters? Even in the larger context of the novel, Bella is more or less a bystander/witness to events greater than her. In summary, all the drama created in this novel is created entirely due to the main character who then always requires the aid of others to save her when she's in over her head. Not a strong view of a woman, and certainly not a saga.

2. It Completely Asserts A False Fantasy Of The Competing Love

This is by far a much simpler case to make if you are a guy because any man will understand this, and likely most women, although some like to feign ignorance. When you have two guys that fawn over one woman and compete for her love, there is no way that all three of them will ever band together for a just cause. In any real world situation, Jacob would not want anything to do with Bella after the wedding, and Edward would most certainly have some issues with the two continuing their friendship whether he would admit it or not. Let's not even get into the "protective" attitude that Jacob has for the child that they birth...it wouldn't get that far. Any rational werewolf would mope about for a couple months, maybe rebound with a few bad romances, and then move on. Saves a whole lot of drama, heartbreak, and sadness in the long run. In a world full of Sparkling vampires, this is the ridiculousness I have the hardest time accepting...which reminds me.

1. Stephenie Meyer Takes 300+ Years Of Tradition...And Pisses On It With A Terrible Story.

Perhaps the most frustrating thing about the Twilight series is that author Stephanie Meyer could have actually pulled the whole thing off. Long before Bram Stoker wrote Dracula and frightened readers in the 1800s, there was a vampire craze of sorts going down in the 1700s. The first known literature about the subject is a poem written by  Heinrich August Ossenfelder known as The Vampire. The work itself outlines a situation in which a man threatens a pious woman who rejects his love that he will visit her in the night, suck her blood, and give her a seductive kiss to show his hedonistic lifestyle is far better than the Christianity she clings to.

Wow. That actually sounds pretty interesting and a great plot for a story. Hell, it's even vague enough that you can make the argument that this idea could fall right in line with the Twilight series and with the controversial aspect of love vs. religion. You would have a book burner for the ages that would long be remembered as a truly remarkable tale. Instead you have a world created more or less upon the concept of cannibalistic fairies that aren't really fairies (because there's no mass audience for that) and lazy storytelling that instead of taking the intricacies and challenges  of staying true to the foundational work that set a precedent for 100s of years within a genre...says "F*** it." and does what it wants.

It doesn't present any noteworthy themes relevant to society today, it plays upon a fantasy scenario that is not true or even an imitation of basic human emotions, and ignores 100s of years of literature, all seemingly to hop on a bandwagon craze and make a quick buck. In principle, it's not art...it's contemporary word porn that will become irrelevant long before many other worthy novels of our time. These are 3 completely legitimate reasons to hate Twilight, and more power to you if you do.

Trailer for DOCTOR WHO's Christmas Special - THE SNOWMEN

The BBC has released the trailer for their Doctor Who Christmas special, which is titled "The Snowmen." The trailer starts out with a nice little introduction by Matt Smith and Jenna Louise Coleman.

The episode is set to air on Christmas Day and will feature the first appearance of the Doctor's new companion, Clara. He will also will cross paths with the homo-reptilian Silurian Madame Vastra (Neve McIntosh) and her associate Jenny (Catrin Stewart).

The episode was written by lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat (Sherlock), and it looks like it's going to be great! I can't wait to see it!

Ben Affleck Having a Hard Time with Stephen King's THE STAND

0
0

A year ago Ben Affleck was hired to direct a big screen adaptation of Stephen King's epic good vs. evil story, The Stand. Apparently he's having a hard time adapting the material. If you've ever read the book, then you know how big this story is, and it doesn't seem like the easiest book to adapt.

The book tells the story of good vs. evil after a virus wipes out most of the American population. While it features dozens of characters and overlapping story lines running over many years, the struggle boils down to a group of survivors fighting the Antichrist-like Randall Flagg.

In a recently interview with GQ, Affleck had this to say...

Right now we’re having a very hard time. But I like the idea — it’s like ‘The Lord of the Rings’ in America. And it’s about how we would reinvent ourselves as a society. If we started all over again, what would we do?

I thought Affleck would be a solid director for the project, so I hope he's able to crack the story with his screenwriter, David Kajganich, and pull off his Lord of the Rings in America. Hopefully he doesn't get so frustrated with the project that he walks away from it.

The novel was first published in 1978 and was adapted as a made-for-TV mini-series in 1994 starring Gary Sinise and Molly Ringwald. I thought the TV series was pretty good. It's not mind blowing, but they did a decent job adapting it for an early 90s TV series.

Affleck is also working on his next film project, which is an adaptation of the Dennis Lehane novel Live By Night.

Two Fun TV Spots for JACK REACHER

0
0

Paramount Pictures has released two new TV spots for Tom Cruise's new action thriller Jack Reacher, and they are loaded with new footage from the film. It seems like some people have warmed up to Cruise playing the title character of Lee Child's novels. The movie looks like a lot of fun, and I think Cruise is going to do a fine job pulling it off.

Here's the Synopsis:

When a gunman takes five lives with six shots, all evidence points to the suspect in custody. On interrogation, the suspect offers up a single note: "Get Jack Reacher!" So begins an extraordinary chase for the truth, pitting Jack Reacher against an unexpected enemy, with a skill for violence and a secret to keep.

The movie was directed by Christopher McQuarrie (The Way of the Gun, writer of The Usual Suspects), and it's based on the ninth book in the series, One Shot. The movie also stars Robert Duvall, Rosamund Pike, Jai Courtney, and Werner Herzog as the villain you will see in the TV spot. It will be released in theaters on December 21st, 2012, and I'm looking forward to checking it out!

Awesome Trailer for the Magician Heist Film NOW YOU SEE ME

0
0

I love a good heist movie, and I also love magic, so mixing the two things together to tell a story like this is pretty freakin' awesome. Lionsgate has released the first trailer for their new film Now You See Me which follows a team of illusionists who rob banks during their performances and share the booty with their audiences. Yes, the movie looks a badass as it sounds!

Not only does the movie look great, but it has a hell of agood cast that includes Jesse Eisenberg, Isla Fisher, Dave Franco, Woody Harrelson, Morgan Freeman, Mark Ruffalo and Michael Caine.

Here's the Synopsis:

An elite FBI squad is pitted in a game of cat and mouse against "The Four Horsemen," a super-team of the world's greatest illusionists. "The Four Horsemen" pull off a series of daring heists against corrupt business leaders during their performances, showering the stolen profits on their audiences while staying one step ahead of the law.

The film will be released on June 7th, 2013, and I have know doubt this trailer is going to get you excited to see it! Check it out!

The scenario I imagine in my head is that the Captain has taken this Communications Officer out for some "Target Practice" on Rigel 88 when suddenly they are attacked by a giant sand rat.

ASTEROIDS Getting Rewrite from Jez Butterworth

Asteroids is one of the many video games getting the big screen treatment. Assassins Creed, Splinter Cell and Gears of War are all in pre-production. Variety reports that Jez Butterworth is set to rewrite the script for Asteroids for Universal Pictures and Lorenzo di Bonaventura.

Not much is currently known about this adaptation, but the material is based on the classic Atari arcade videogame. Matt Lopez and Evan Spiliotopoulos penned earlier drafts of the script. Butterworth has a number of projects in the works currently, including the James Brown biopic.

Stay tuned for more details as they land!

Teaser Trailer for the Luc Besson Produced Heist Thriller MOBIUS

0
0

An interesting Inception-like teaser trailer has hit the internet for a heist thriller called Mobius. The story takes place in Monaco, is set in the world of high finance, and follows an FSB officer who falls in love with his agent, an American woman who works as a trader in a Russian bank. The movie stars Jean Dujardin (The Artist) as "an experienced spy tracking a powerful Russian oligarch," Tim Roth plays a man "suspected of laundering money through his bank," and Cécile de France takes on the role of "a bright young trader."

One of the most interesting aspects of the film is that it's based on the Möbius strip idea developed by German mathematician August Ferdinand Möbius. The Möbius Strip is described a "a non-orientable two-dimensional surface with only one side when embedded in three-dimensional Euclidean space." You can read more about it here

The film was written and directed by Eric Rochant (Love Without Pity, Long Live the Republic, "Mafiosa") and produced by Luc Besson's production company EuropaCorp. It definitely looks like a film I'd enjoy. I love a good heist flick!
