Practice your Tridimensional Chess skills on this classy buy also very expensive piece of Star Trek merchandise from ThinkGeek. How pricey? For a half-scale replica of the game board used in the show with 24 kt gold and silver pieces, you're going to have to shell out around $274.99! That's not cheap, but remember, you can beat Vulcans with this thing...

In case you were wondering, there are actual rules for Tridimensional chess. Check out the rules here, and some pictures of the chess set (which is markedly fancier than the show's version) below.

Sigourney Weaver Says AVATAR Sequel Scripts Are "Many Times More Amazing Than the First"

The hit film Avatar and its long gestating sequels have a minor update from actor Sigourney Weaver. Last we heard there were three sequels, or four, or five?!?! Apparently, Weaver has read three scripts, which I hope means James Cameron has reduced the number of sequels to just three. In an interview with Variety, Weaver shared her opinion on the scripts:

In my opinion, the three scripts I’ve read so far are many times more amazing than the first one in terms of their scope. He did a lot of the heavy lifting in the first movie, establishing the family and the relationships and the world, and now he really gets to play.

With these films potentially shooting back-to-back-to-back-to-back, you really need the script dialed in. Cameron is not known for going in half-cocked, watch the behind the scenes of any of his films, the man is a technician. Let's hope they finally have the actors step into the motion capture volume soon.

Tilda Swinton's Anti-HARRY POTTER Stance Revealed!

$

The divine Tilda Swinton, who recently dazzled as the Ancient One in Doctor Strange, has recently taken a stance that is sure to draw ire from the geek community: she thinks the Harry Potter films are damaging to children. But don’t be dismayed! She isn’t opposed to depictions of magic or witchcraft or anything. She just hates boarding school.

The actress attended boarding school herself, The West Heath Girls School, also attended by Princess Diana, and she calls it a “very lonely and isolating environment,” going so far as to call her time there “hell.” She told The Scots Magazine:

“That’s why I dislike films like Harry Potter which tend to romanticize such places. I think they are a very cruel setting in which to grow up and I don’t feel children benefit from that type of education. Children need their parents and the love parents can provide.”

Sounds like her time at school was more like Hogwarts under the petrifying reign of Dolores Umbridge than the warm and inviting place created by Albus Dumbledore. Hopefully, parents who decide to send their children to boarding school make the decision with more care than just thinking, “Boy, that quidditch seems fun!”

If you're wondering why we didn't feature a fully fledged AT-AT in our above image...it's because Colin Furze hasn't shown it yet. Instead, he shows us how to construct a house sized AT-AT from Star Wars and convert it into a child's playhouse! You'll see some glimpses of the project and will be incredibly jealous the whole way through I promise. WHY CAN'T I BE OBSCENELY RICH AND HAVE THIS IN MY BACKYARD?! Forget the kids, I WANT THIS.

5 Geeky Things We Want This Week, STAR WARS Edition

$

If you are the same kind of geek as me, you have a ton of Star Wars gear, but are always happy to acquire more. Before Christmas gets here and you are disappointed to receive a homemade sweater instead of a Hot Toys Rogue One Deathtrooper, treat yo self to some of this cool, slightly more modestly priced Star Wars gear.

Han Solo Leggings

I made my husband a Han Solo costume for Halloween a couple years ago, and sewing the stripes on the pant legs was the most obnoxious part. (You have to hand sew most of it, and I am strictly a Singer girl.) If they ever wear out, I am going to try to talk him into these. He’s never worn leggings, but he does favor skinny jeans, so these aren’t that much tighter, right? I also may pick up a pair for myself. They’re pretty cool.

Pizza Cutter Lightsaber

I kind of hate cutting pizza, but the knife I use doesn’t make lightsaber sounds while I lacerate the toppings, cheese, and crust, so that may be part of the problem. It might be more fun to cut pizza if you can pretend you are battling Kylo Ren in the forests of Takodana. This pizza cutter has a lightsaber grip, which I am sure is somehow ergonomically beneficial as well.

BB-8  Bowl Set

If you are going to work a Star Wars theme into your holiday parties this year — and let’s face it, you are — this set of serving bowls and platter will make for a lovely tablescape. Hopefully your food will be more appetizing that Rey’s gross instant bread portions, or your guests just might sic a rathtar on you.

Star Wars Glow Lights

Glow lights can be an excellent way to help your kid (or you!) get over their ridiculous fear of the dark, but I don't know if this particular set is going to be great for that, mostly because your only choices are Darth Vader or Stormtroopers. They aren't exactly soothing images, but the rainbow colors do make them slightly less menacing.

X-Wing vs. Death Star Rebel Assault Drones

We couldn't close out a Star Wars gear round up without a toy, and this one looks fantastic. Finally, you can take the command of an X-Wing and lead the assault on the Death Star. Hopefully it is everything you always dreamed it would be.

SONS OF ANARCHY Spinoff Series MAYANS MC Gets a Pilot Order and Plot Details

If you were a fan of Kurt Sutter's Sons of Anarchy, you'll be happy to hear that the Mayans spinoff series that has been in development has received and official pilot order from FX. The series will be called Mayans MC, and thanks to THR, we have some plot details.

The pilot episode was written by Sutter and Elgin James, who will also both produce the series. The Mayans played a big role in Sons of Anarchy and the new series is set after the events that occurred with Jax Teller.

Mayans MC will center around a character named EZ Reyes, "a prospect in the Mayan MC charter on the Cali-Mexi border, struggles with his desire for vengeance against the cartel and his need for respect from the women he loves."

When previously talking about the spinoff and bringing on James to work with him on it, Sutter said, "I wanted to find a strong, unique Latino voice. Because I didn't think a white guy from Jersey should be writing about Latin culture and traditions. Elgin is that voice."

I enjoyed the craziness and drama of Sons, and I hope that Sutter and James can bring something compelling to Mayans MC that will draw audiences in.

HEROES Star Masi Oka Has a Role in Netflix's DEATH NOTE Movie

$

0

I'm sure you all remember Masi Oka, who played Hiro in NBC's superhero series Heroes. Well, the actor recently revealed in an interview with EW that he is producing and has a role in Netflix's upcoming live-action film adaptation of Death Note

Since Heroes ended, Oka has been keeping busy. He just ended his seven-season run on Hawaii 5-O, and he's been working on a ton of other projects behind the scenes. When asked what he's been doing outside of the shows that he has been in he said:

"I’m very fortunate to be able to do things also behind-the-scenes, creating some TV shows and also producing a lot of movies. I recently finished producing Death Note for Netflix, which I have a part in as well. I also just finished shooting Meg, which is a Jason Statham-starring shark movie for Warner Bros., so that’s a pretty big budget film as well. So Five-0 has been great about letting me pursue other opportunities. I consult for a lot of Japanese companies as well, including the Japanese government, so I’ve always been going back and forth to L.A. to Hawaii to Japan. I’ve literally been doing the shuttle run between those three cities."

Sounds like he's keeping himself very busy. Unfortunately, there was no follow-up question to the Death Note news, so we don't know exactly who he's playing.

CB suggests that he could be playing Touta Matsuda in the movie. He's a young member of the Japanese Task Force, and he has awkward social skills. It's explained that "Matsuda works hard to overcome his rookie status and have his colleagues respect him, but things become difficult when he’s asked to help find the killer Akira." This is certainly a role that he could fit in.

Death Note is being directed by Adam Wingard (You’re Next, The Guest), and Nat Wolf (Paper Towns) is set to star in the lead role. For those who don't know, the story follows a student who discovers a supernatural notebook that allows him to kill anyone simply by writing the victim’s name. This discovery leads him down the road where he wants to cleanse the world of evil with this newfound power.

The movie also stars Keith Stanfield (Straight Outta Compton) as L, Margaret Qualley (The Leftovers) as Mia Sutton, Paul Nakauchi (Star Wars: The Clone Wars) as Watari, and Shea Whigham (Boardwalk Empire) as James Turner. Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man) is providing the voice of Ryuk.

The movie is set to premiere in 2017.

Marvel Comics has released a great behind the scenes featurette that gives us a look at their upcoming new comic series Monsters Unleashed! I'm pretty stoked about this new series, and I'm excited to read it. This video gives us are best look and explanation yet of what this whole thing will entail. It features new monster art from the series along with interviews with the talented individuals who are working on it.

The creative team explained that they wanted to use this opportunity to create some new monsters to play with. Editor-in-Chief Axel Alfonso said:

"We took it upon ourselves to create monsters for the 21st century. To take the monsters that inspired us when we were kids reading these comic books. What would they look like today in the Marvel universe, and we put five of our hottest artist, Adam Kubert, Leinil Yu, Steve McNiven, Salvador Larrocca, and Greg Land, and we put them all to the task of creating their vision for a cool monster in the Marvel Universe in the 21st century, and we think they all rose to the challenge."

Assistant Editor Christina Harrington added:

"We told them something out of a nightmare, something that you would want Captain America to punch right in the face. Cullen Bunn, our wonderful writer, has sort of tapped the imagination of anybody who's obsessed with Kaiju films or monster movies of any kind "

The series is also introducing a new character named Kid Kaiju, an 11-year-old boy who wants to be a hero. Here's the synopsis:

"Hundreds and thousands of monsters have descended onto the Marvel Universe to wreak havoc. This is an all hands on deck situation for the Marvel heroes. All the Marvel superheroes have to get past whatever differences they have with each other, unify, and fight against this for the fate of the planet.
"As skyscraper-sized behemoths rampage across the globe – it’s all hands on deck in the highly-anticipated MONSTERS UNLEASHED event! Kicking off on January 18th in comic stores everywhere, series writer Cullen Bunn and five superstar artists bring you a blockbuster epic that has to be seen to be believed. But before heroes everywhere go toe-to-toe with these gargantuan beasts, hear from the minds behind the massive monster mayhem with a special MONSTERS UNLEASHED BEHIND THE SCENES FEATURETTE."

Sony's 21 JUMP STREET Female Spinoff Film Moves Forward With Writer and Director

$

Sony has been planning a female spinoff film for 21 Jump Street since 2015, and the studio is moving forward with their plans to get it into production. They've hired Rodney Rothman to write and direct the film. Rothman has some experience with the franchise as he wrote the script for 22 Jump Street as well as the Men in Black and 21 Jump Street crossover film MIB 23, which is also still in development.

According to Variety, the spinoff film revolves around two female cops who go undercover as students in some sort of school setting. The studio previously had two sets of writers writing two different scripts for the movie, but apparently they didn't like how they turned out if they have Rothman working on the project now.

Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum were both hilarious in the first two films. They really did a great job with this franchise. They are still attached to return to MIB 23, but there's no information on if they will have a part in this female spinoff film.

Rothman also most recently wrote Andy Samberg's comedy Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, which turned out so much more hilarious than I thought it would be.

Viggo Mortensen Had a Routine of Violently Head-Butting His LOTR Castmates

Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy was a perfect storm of greatness. I don't know if we'll ever see that kind of surprising, magical, and epic fantasy filmmaking again. That looked like it would have been one of the most fun movie sets to be on ever, and we know that the cast and crew all became incredibly tight with each other. It's the perfect kind of atmosphere to breed pranks.

During a recent AMA on Reddit, Dominic Monaghan was asked if there were any pranks pulled on the set of the trilogy that we might not have heard about before. He went on to reveal that Viggo Mortensen had a routine head-butting his cast mates for fun... and it hurt. Monaghan says:

"Vigo conducted a long running head-butting prank which involved him head-butting you quite violently. He almost knocked me out at my birthday party with a head-butt. It continues to this day. When I saw him a few weeks ago the first thing i did was give him a good old fashioned head-butt."

It's so cool that this tradition of head-butting continues.

Story Details for the ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK Remake Revealed

$

Yes, Twentieth Century Fox still plans on remaking John Carpenter‘s 1981 cult classic film Escape From New York. The script for the film was written by Luther creator Neal Cross, and thanks to The Wrap, we have ten story details from the remake to share with you.

The original followed a war hero/criminal named Snake Plissken who was brought in by the government to save the president of the United States after his plane crashed in New York City, which is a high-security prison in the movie.

If you don't want to know how the remake will be different and what the new story will entail, you might want to stop reading because there are spoilers ahead.

Here are the major story points of the film:

  • Snake Plissken's real name is revealed to Colonel Robert "Snake" Plissken.
  • The main viallin will not be the Duke of New York. The new villain is described as a lean, intensely charismatic playboy named Thomas Newton, an "heir to an agrochemical and biotech corporation. Five years ago, he decided to donate his entire fortune."
  • The movie will introduce audiences to a female CIA Deputy Executive Director named Roberta Hauk. The role was originally played by Lee Van Cleef.
  • New York City isn’t a maximum security prison! In the reboot, New York is going to be "breathtakingly lovely" city. "Manhattan is the island we know, but with more towering glass structures and a high, undulating glass wall. The sky is alive with drones as serene as bees, and artificial intelligence controls all in the form of an ethnically ambiguous, cheery young woman called April. A small staff of technicians and researchers known as 'Seers' monitor all."
  • It's described that the world is in chaos. They say that globally, "one in every seventy-five human begins is now either a refugee, internally displaced, or seeking asylum."
  • There's a massive hurricane that will play a part in the film that's called Superstorm Ellery.
  • The whole city will be made vulnerable by April’s security. It's said that the security won’t be as good as everyone hoped.
  • Snake has only eleven hours to complete his mission. In the original movie, Snake had 22 hours.
  • Newton has a failsafe, which is a device called Fat Boy, which is described as an "ominous, dull metal sphere about the size of a car, in a nest of conduits and cabling."

That's it! Judging from what you've learned here, what do you think? Will you give the remake a shot, or do you still think it's ridiculous that they are remaking the movie? I'm not expecting it to be better than the original, but I'm sure it will offer some entertaining eye-candy.

HARRY POTTER AND THE CURSED CHILD Is Coming to Broadway in 2018

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is such a great continuation of the Harry Potter saga. I just recently finished reading the script for the two-part play, and I loved it!

I've been wondering when the stage play would make its way to Broadway, and the New York Times is reporting that it will open there in spring of 2018, so it looks like Potter fans will have to start planning and saving up for a trip to New York!

It's set to show at the Lyric Theater, which is currently occupied by Cirque du Soleil's $25 million show “Paramour.” The theater owner wants to bring The Cursed Child there so bad that they are paying Cirque du Soleil a substantial amount of money to leave. It is said to be an offer they couldn't refuse.

The theater will be completely reimagined to meet the specifications that the producers of The Cursed Child are looking for in a theater. To make sure that they ensure The Cursed Child ends up at the theater, the owners were prepared "to spend millions of dollars to build us a theater within the theater, designed to meet the specifications of what we were looking for — intimate, but big enough so we can have a considerable number of low-priced seats around the house.”

As a fan of the franchise, I'm excited that The Cursed Child is coming to Broadway! I can't wait to see it! Here's the description of the story of the play:

It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband and father of three school-age children. While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.
